The Humanities, Social Sciences and the creative arts are somewhat marginalised within the broader conceptualisation of the South African Universities of Technology and this could lead to a paucity of engagement with the critical challenges facing them. Globalisation, for example, is taken as desirable and neutral and that culture and context are relatively unimportant to their ongoing development. The challenges of globalisation and culture are explored as a critique on the fundamental conceptualisation of the institution-type and as a way of arguing for a more critical role for the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Creative Arts.

As humanity races towards the new millenium, the socio-political and socio-cultural foundations that support mechanisms of international trade and commerce, international exchange, international cohabitation as it were, are caught in a vortex of change. The twin forces of technology and global trade have compressed the traditional grey zones of intercultural co-existence, and this phenomenon coupled with the ground swell of support that various global concerns such as ecological and disarmamant causes have received, has indeed forced upon us a new era - an era where an opening to understanding and appreciation of different cultures have become sine qua non for survival of human kind as we know it. This phenomenon of intercultural awareness can be gauged in many ways. However, by and large, advertising is a commercial tool and returns are very carefully monitored. Consequently, if intercultural elements are used in advertising, it is because they will go a long way in helping to attract the consumer. Intercultural elements in advertisements in magazines could thus be taken as an index of the openness of a nation to other cultures. The methodology adopted for the purpose of a comparative study of intercultural elements was : - categorisation of the various products. - definition of 13 intercultural elements pertaining to the two components of the media in question - viz text and imagery. The objectives of this study are : - in chapter i, to explore the metamorphosis of intercultural problems. - in chapter ii, to compare the degree of openness to intercultural in france/germany/india by quantifying the comparison of the presence of intercultural elements in the advertisements of these three countries. A special effort was also made to study here the approach that multinationals take when operating across cross-cultural borders. - in chapter iii, to make a special case study regarding the aspect of unity/diversity(a detailed analysis of the category motor vehicles). - in chapter iv, to explore pedagogical applications

Since the 1950’s, rock importantly diversified itself. It became a complex and heterogeneous cultural object. It is now hard to typify the genre as a strictly American or English production. Local and national scenes are effectively developping. Some of them even know international success and bring me to point two facts : 1) English language and culture are no longer the exclusive cultural references of rock production. New national identities now integrate it. 2) Nonetheless, rock aesthetic is still highly recognizable. The aim of this study is to analyse the articulation between rock aesthetic and national culture in the iconography of Finnish and German bands. I adopt a socio-semiotic methodology for analysis. This articulation is remarkable in imagery but also in music. It find its origins in a global social and cultural context, and also in the mutations of the musical industry. After this work, we can produce the following conclusions : 1) Firstly we can conclude that the evolutions of cultural industries and globalised culture toward multiculturalism favoured the developpment and the visibility of national rock scenes. Structuration of the musical economy played also an importantpart. Moroever, the phenomenon is not new. Effectively, the British rock scene is an early example of it since the 1960’s. 2) Then, the evolution and the diversification of rock aesthetic as a result of acculturation create good conditions for the emergence of new identities in rock music. We notice the use of different strategies to express the national in music, such as specialisation into a genre, musical innovation or inscription of music in the local cultural environment

During the XXth century, communication, information and entertainment fields converged, under the influence of data digitalisation, network infrastructure development and widespread use of terminal whose common characteristic is to be fitted with screens. It is a fact that might be well observed: screens are everywhere in our everyday life, in public spaces and private areas since at least a few decades, and it generates different reactions, as fear or enthusiasm. In making the "digital divide" manifests, the screen plays a role not only by his presence but although through its absence, and its generalization even seems to be a crucial step to achieve the "global village" project. So it can't be an overstatement arguing that the screen has become a social topic. As a matter of fact, screen's presence is remarquable in at least two different ways. First of all, it is part of our lives in a technical and practical way cause it now frames most of our interactions. Also it has spread to our lives as it has become a very fashionable key word in the discourse about communication crisis. The use of the screen word not only increases during all the last century, but in addition its semantic field has become more complex. Sometimes it is refering to a set of devices, sometimes to an hypernym for each of them. Considering these elements, this research aimed to analyse these different aspects of the screen, first through the help of linguistic tools, then with picture analysis, in order to reflect about the future of the screen. When does the screen has been invented? What are its characteristics? These are the questions we will try to answer, so as to define the part played by the screen in culture. The aim of this study is to elaborate a screen taxonomy, to enlight our knowledge about the diversity of screens and offer a documented definition of the “screen culture” topic, in order to improve our knowledge of the changes that affect the communication field

This dissertation focuses on the relationship between design and portuguese cultural heritage. The [apparent] loss of personal identity and objects homogeneity, promoted by Western lifestyles, contribute to the loss of cultural identity. Designing products with cultural values can help the consumer (user) to form emotional links between them and the products, and this aspect can be important for their competitiveness.Having this aspect in mind, the aim of this study is assess the importance of portuguese cultural heritage references in the design processes at Portugal, as well as is to show that the competitiveness of products on a global scale depends on a number of factors, wich include the appreciation of local culture (think local to act global). This investigation project will also emphasize the social responsability of the designer as a creator and transmitter of culture. The methodology is base on literature review and selected case studies - Grão system and Fabrico Próprio By Pedrita Studio and a Vida Portuguesa project by Catarina Portas - and allowed to examine some concepts to see if we can identify a portuguese design or if only exists projects that are simple thought and produced in Portugal, where industrialization was discontinuousand delayed process. The insistence on reproducing foreign models and the reduced investments on skilled manpower have placed the majority of portuguese products (read: made in Portugal) on a low level at a global markets. In other words, its competitiveness was based aon low-cost labour force, an aspect that reflected itself on final price and on quality of execution. Industrial and governamental companies slowly began to understand that this mode of action - based only on the Know-how and low price - was no longer able to compete at international markets. In this context it's impossible to speak of a portuguese design identity. Meanwhile something has changed but not enough to modify the industrial mentality and, consequently, the repositioning of portuguese industrial products. So to reach level that gives us more chances to complete in saturated markets and tight competition, it becomes essencial to know how to manage the resources - econimic, human and cultural heritage (material and immaterial) is a resource that design shouldn't ignore. The knowledge of what can be called portuguese symbolism - colours, shapes and symbols - and the conscentious adaptation into new contexts and frameworks may consist in a significant asset to national design. Our investigation concleded that within the portuguese industrial context it is possible and desirable to enforce the concept of industrial manufacturing as distinguishing feature of portuguese products on a global scale.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Ethical decision making in business, the manifestation of business ethics in the individual, is influenced and shaped by various factors, including the external environment, organisational factors and society. In China business ethics, and consequently ethical decision making has emerged and developed mainly as a response to the economic reforms in response to globalisation. Globalisation, a product of the interaction of political and predominantly economic liberalisation, largely brought about by technological change, has become a household word since the last decade of the twentieth century. It is hailed by its advocates as a way to spread cosmopolitan values as well as better employment conditions and standards of living. Its critics, however, see it as a new wave of colonialism imposed by developed countries and multinational companies on poor countries, a synonym to exploitation and impoverishment of both people and nature. A contested issue on globalisation is concerned with its consequences as to the convergence of societies toward a uniform pattern of economic, political, and even cultural organisation, and thus to the formation of a global ethic. A change in approach towards intellectual property and the trends observed in patent applications indicate to what degree various countries have embraced the opportunities presented by globalisation. China is a prime example of a country that embraced the opportunities, and also made the required changes in policies and behaviour. Globalisation has changed the environment in which everyone is competing forever. International institutions play a significant role, and being part of treaties is paramount if countries want to play in the global market. Thus, globalisation changed the external environment that has an important influence on ethical decision making by individuals. These changes are followed by changes in countries' legal environments. As a result the rules by which companies have to play are also influenced, changing the way management should and eventually do behave, which will ultimately change the work experience gained by an individual. A change in individual factors will eventually change the ethical philosophy and the decision ideal of an individual, which also have an impact on ethical decision making. The end result is that globalisation has a profound influence on every factor that influence an individual making ethical decisions. However, these changes can take very long to start to manifest, a fact seen in the lag between policy changes and observing tangible changes in approach to intellectual property rights, as observed in China.

This dissertation examines material evidence of the phenomena of globalization and the formation of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (9th - 7th century BCE). The Neo-Assyrian Empire was first concieved of by nineteenth-century European scholars, nationalists, and positivists. They identified it as a central space which they called "the Assyrian triangle" and envisioned as a cultural hub. The Assyrian culture would then radiate outward according to the expansionist policy employed by rulers motivated by an imperialist ideology. Previous archaeological examination confirms the ethno-cultural uniqueness of the vestiges now being revisited thanks to a renewal of research methods and activities in northern Iraq. The first part of this study proposes an epistemological and historiographical approach to the concepts of "material culture" and "central region," in order to avoid any methodological obstacles in thinking about the history of contact and the circulation of ancient technologies in the region between the Euphrates and the foothills of Zagros. The second part of this study investigates the settlement patterns and material production in the western Jazirah, focusing on the site of Tell Masaikh for which a typo-chronology of the pottery is proposed. Finally, by putting into perspective these analyses, settlement rythmes and the direction of exchanges and interactions among the populations of these regions are made clear. The conclusions of this study show that the Assyrian empire belonged to a globalized network in the first millennium, which resulted from the long history of cultural contact in northern Mesopotamia

My texts fit into two broad genres, fiction and scholarly non-fiction. The texts are: Helen Garner’s The First Stone (1995), Sheila Jeffreys’ The Lesbian Heresy (1993), Catharine Lumby’s Bad Girls (1997), Linda Jaivin’s Eat Me (1995) and Justine Ettler’s The River Ophelia (1995). I engage with various critical responses to these texts, including reviews, essays and interviews with the authors. I draw also from a range of theoretical sources. These include analyses of the culture wars by the American theorist Lillian S. Robinson and the Australian scholars McKenzie Wark, David McKnight and Mark Davis. Davis has provided a useful overview of how the metaphor of ‘generational conflict’ circulated in Australian culture during the 1990s. I draw on Arjun Appadurai’s model of “global cultural flows” and Ann Curthoys’ history of feminism in Australia. I engage with research into the increasingly ‘globalised’ nature of Australian writing, as well as a number of feminist works on the relationship between sex and power

This research proposes to analyze how musicians from Arab music institutions recomposethemselves outside of the institutional framework in countries such as France and the United States. After analyzing in a first part the problem of culture and homogenization, this research addresses in a second part a technical, economic and social history of Arabic music, through which are analyzed the issues of the definition of musical systems and instrumental rationalization. The rationalization of scale systems and the question of just intonation are not sounding everywhere in the same direction. The socio-historical developments of Arab music and its renewal shows on the contrary how scales formats based on "quarter tones" helped to structure some musical practices. The recomposition of Arabic music ensembles outside of their institutional frameworks such as in France and in the United States, shows how through their new territorial roots, these musical forms do not actually reactualize disembodied or generic forms of the "Arab music" but are rather the result of a recontextualization process that musicians redefine themselves from heterogeneous institutional know-how. Thus, the analysis of Arab music conceived in new territories allows us to understand, from empirical studies, how institutional knowledges and know-how are renewed and implemented, without abandoning the scales formats that were and remain at the foundation of these musical practices

When questioning Architecture using several examples throughout history up to our contemporary world, we found many answers to existential interrogations that seem enigmatic. The phenomenon of communication or expression through architecture is somehow related to antagonism that led to the clash of civilizations. By its “presence”, the architecture configures the world of man, satisfying his material needs, as well as their dreams but also his dreams and ideals. Architecture carries his “Ideas” reflects his “vision” and communicates his “Messages”. More than anything else, it can enchant him by building e new world. However, it can also destroy him by violating his senses, polluting his spirit by the ideas it conveys. The architectural world also marks the place by its presence, it becomes a “symbol” or “image”, a landmark in the international journey which presents itself as a challenge, or even a new conflict of power through emblematic buildings. This architectural that we call “Landmark” becomes an essential paradigm of “presence” and mutation. Its essential mission is to go beyond the instrumental, an inevitable factor of stability and continuity of the world. A path towards the future, not only a reflexion of the past. This debate, in relation with a new dimension of architecture, combines itself with the fourth dimension and goes even further, looking for the true reason of the world’s survival through architecture and time. This aspect, in relation with communication, and which is present in the sociological and historical discourse, deserves to be studies more thoroughly by us architects. We sometimes hide some major aspects relative to communication by the mere “presence” of buildings purposely created by our alert and diligent subconscious

In Northwestern Yunnan, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is the place of definition of a consensual and attractive Tibetan identity, by which political authorities give local people a concern for the natural environment. The representations they carry echo and mobilize Western representations of the Tibetan people, which include the Shangri-La imagery and the identification of Tibetan Buddhism with ecology. Since 2006, it is staged in Pudacuo National Park, which is the first national park in China. Although it was elaborated with the help of a United-States conservationist non-governmental organization, this place has in fact little to do with the protection of the natural environment and aims to grow mass tourism. The alternative development it offers to local farmers is welcome as it opens new horizons, including the possession of a contemporary culture, access to the consumer society and the opening to the outside world

The purpose of this qualitative study was to highlight the Swedish treatment of the so-called ‘honour culture’. It does so by examining Swedish authorities and Swedish non-profit organisations, with a distinct focus on the woman and on forced marriage as part of said honour culture. Previous research has shown that Swedish culture and honour culture are opposites. It has also shown that the complexity of existing within the honour culture, especially in Sweden, and how it can affect the individual woman in different ways. It has however not shown the distinct way Sweden deals with the problematic honour culture itself. To investigate how authorities and non-profit organisations deal with honour culture the following research questions were asked; how does Swedish authorities and non-profit organisations view the Swedish woman, affected by honour culture, in regards of forced marriage? What are the women’s standing within honour culture and what is their standing within the Swedish culture? How does Swedish authorities and non-profit organisations deal with honour culture? To answer the research questions six semi structured interviews were performed based on a strategic selection process. Using ‘the multicultural triad’ and ‘individual and group-centred mindset’ as theoretical framework it is shown that the individual woman in this case is a part of two collectives; the honour culture and the Swedish culture which can result in conflict. It is further shown that though Sweden is an individualistic country its governmental treatment is sometimes group centred. The results show that the treatment of honour culture differ from organisation to organisation, but also between organisations and authorities and concludes that a holistic and systematic treatment is needed.
