Aim. The purpose of the article is to describe the traditions of growing and using plants in the villages and small towns and to highlight the range of plants that were most often planted near houses during the 1970s and 80s in Ukraine. Methods. The study was conducted in the villages of Kyiv (Rogoziv), Zhytomyr (Hardyshivka) regions, in the suburbs of Kyiv (Bilychi, Zhulyany) and Borzna (Chernihiv region) by interviewing and eyewitness based accounts. Results. The article covers the list of traditional agricultural, fruit and ornamental plants for rural areas of Ukraine during the 1970s and 80s. The names of cultivars, methods of cultivation, meaning and traditional use of the plants are given. The peculiarities of the range of cultures depending on the studied area are analyzed. Conclusions. As a result of our research, the list of plants species grown in the villages of Ukraine during the 1970s and 80s included 104 species. Ornamental and food plants that were grown and used in the villages of Ukraine during the 1970s and 80s mostly were herbaceous annuals and perennials. A significant portion of them were vegetable fruit and berry plants. Among ornamental plants, medium- and tall plants with bright flowers and (or) strong aroma became more popular and widespread. These were species and cultivars that are easily propagated by seeds and division, do not require careful care and are resistant to diseases and pests.

The present paper is part of a larger project by the same author that deals with the relationship between economic ideas and institutional change in post-socialist Russia. The paper develops two main theses: First, it argues that the concept of “developed socialism” as introduced by Leonid Brezhnev in 1971 on the one hand deprived the planned economy of political “mobilizing energy”, yet at the other hand prevented it from turning it into a self-organizing system. Thus it was, I argue, the perfect recipe for stagnation. Secondly, based on Imre Lakatos’ theory of scientific research programs, I argue that the concept of developed socialism in its official Soviet version can be seen as an attempt to cushion the critique of central planning that had developed in some of the Central Eastern European countries in the 1960s: By allowing some more, yet insignificant critiques (broadening the protective belt), the hard core of the ideological program (e.g. the structure of property rights) was made safer against criticism. The inability of Gorbachev’s economic advisors to provide practical guidance for reforms was, I argue, partly due to the fact that the ideology of developed socialism had favored an “idealist turn” in economics. As a result of this turn, the shestidesyatniki generation of Soviet political economists had rather little to say about economic reality.

The article discusses the problem of the avant-garde in Croatian poetry during the second half of 20th century. It supports the thesis about the continuity of the avant-garde before and after World War II, and perceives the artistic and literary experiments of the neo and post-avant-garde as a part of a long avant-garde tradition. The analysis brings forward the different perceptions of avant-garde in the works of Radovan Ivšić and Josip Sever, and post-avant-garde poets of 1970s and 80s.

Introduction: This study was conducted to evaluate the results and complications of transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) over the last 30 years in our institution. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study encompasses 3 different eras: 168 patients in the late 70s, 175 patients in the late 80s and 283 patients in the late 90s. All the patients had at least 18 months of follow-up. Results: The mean age from the 1970s, the 1980s and 1999 were 68.8 years, 69.2 years and 69.4 years respectively. The proportion of patients operated on for acute retention fell from 78.6% (132) in the 1970s, to 54% (96) in the 1980s, and 43% (122) in 1999. The mean resection time was 44.8 minutes in 1989 and 41.8 minutes in 1999. The mean weight of prostate resected was 22.1 g in the 1970s, 24.2 g in 1989 and 22.2 g in 1999. 44% (74) required blood transfusion in the 1970s, with 11% (19) in 1989 and 4% (11) in 1999. There were 2 deaths (acute myocardial infarction and pneumonia) in the 1970s, 1 (pneumonia) in 1989 and no mortality in 1999. There were 4 patients with TURP syndrome in the 1970s, 3 in 1989 and 1 in 1999. The incidence of postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) was 25% (42) in the 1970s, 16% (29) in 1989 and 6% (17) in 1999. Conclusions: As expertise and experience in TURP progress, the complication rates fall, as evidenced by the lower rates of transfusion, TURP syndrome and postoperative UTI in the later series.

Abstract Translations of restaurant menus from Catalan or Spanish into English are important for the Catalan restaurant industry and for tourism in general, since an improvement in the quality of the translations may lead to higher standards of service and better socio-cultural exchanges. A sample of 1013 menu items from the Tarragona area suggests there are differences in functionality between the menus translated in the 1970s/1980s and those translated in the 1990s. A possible reason for these differences is that all the menus from the 1970s/80s were translated by professional translators, and those from the 1990s, by non-professional translators. The study also suggests that books on menu translations published by the Catalan government in 1991 did not reach the restaurant owners and that official translation policy in this area has thus had little effect.

When feminist approaches to international law, particularly to human rights and humanitarian law, began to make headway in the early 1990s, they had already left behind some of the anti-imperial and anti-military emphases of much of the internationally informed feminism of the 1970s and 80s. Here, I revisit some of those Cold War feminist approaches, with the hope of informing today's much-needed international legal attention to peace, disarmament—including nuclear disarmament—and global inequality.

In the 80s, Kleyff gave up the form of the „song–letter”, but he returns to it in his latest songs, which express his reaction to the contemporary political situation in Poland.

This paper examines transreligiosity in the context of the transmission of South Asian concepts of spirituality to the UK in the 20th century. Between the 1920s and 1990s, Indian teacher and author Phiroz Mehta (1902–1994) crossed borders in a colonial and postcolonial shuttling between India and the UK but also transgressed conceptual and practice borders of religion, teaching Indian religious concepts to post-Christian spiritual seekers in 1970s–80s South London. Mehta cultivated an elasticity between many religious and philosophical traditions, recognising the post-institutional fatigue of subjects who sought alternative forms of ‘belonging without believing’. Privileging the domestic space for teaching, as well as transitory ‘camp’ gatherings in the UK and Germany, Mehta often operated in the social margins, combining teachings from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity with Zoroastrianism, Judaism (specifically Kabbalah), and Daoism. He offered his tutees the freedom to practice religion in whatever way they chose by drawing on a broad range of traditions concurrently to create a transreligiosity. This paper examines Panagiotopoulos and Roussou’s ‘transgressional webs of practising individualised forms of alternative spirituality’ in relation to Mehta’s followers in the 1970s-1980s and asks how transreligiosity relates to other theoretical analyses, such as religious exoticism, bricolage, religious appropriation, cultural re-articulation or assemblage. This paper focuses on qualitative interviews with original members of the Mehta community conducted between 2021 and 2022.

In the last six decades since the 1951 overthrow of Rana regime, hydropower development in Nepal was implemented under various models depending on the donors. The 1950s and ‘60s were the era of bilateralism to be subsumed by multilateralism of the 1970s and ‘80s only to be trodden over by liberalization and privatization of the 1990s and 2000. In this article I will argue that we need to create new archival models in order to preserve and share knowledge of historical, ‘hidden’ television professions and production cultures. Oral history traditions of recording life stories give us a useful starting point. Engineering ‘encounters’ between skilled television technicians, and the now obsolete equipment they operated in the 1970s and 80s, is challenging for a myriad of reasons, but videoing the interaction of man and machine provides us with a rich insight into how analogue television was produced and broadcast. Social media enables us to disseminate these histories in new and innovative ways.

The gap between rich and poor is widening internationally and nationally, youth suicide, already alarming, is on the increase, indigenous rights are being eroded and indigenous health remains poor (perhaps these trends are related), unemployment persists at stubbornly high levels, and many women's services, including health services, are being de-funded, out-sourced, amalgamated or mainstreamed. Governments are becoming corporations and citizens are being asked to become customers.

Contemporary block housing estates, apart from technical problems, face the new problem of an ageing society. These housing estates, built in the 1970s and 80s, were inhabited primarily by young people, typically families with children. Many years later, the children, after gaining independence, left their family dwellings, leaving their ageing parents. Studies show that these housing estates are currently largely inhabited by seniors, who often live alone. This paper presents a study performed on the large-panel housing estates, Popowice, in terms of how it satisfies the needs of seniors. The paper also presents examples of apartment designs that sanction the needs of seniors, including seniors with special needs.

This lecture followed by a debate concerns popular movements, in particular those which the author describes as libertarian, emerging in the city of São Paulo in the late 1970s and early 80s. It focuses on the building of memory, its relevance in creating a sense of identity and of community, and the issue of political participation. Abstract We explore the effects of decentralization on education and health in Ethiopia using an original database covering all of the country’s regions and woredas (local governments). Ethiopia is a remarkable case in which war, famine and chaos in the 1970s–80s were followed by federalization, decentralization, rapid growth, and dramatic improvements in human development. Did decentralization contribute to these successes? We use time series and panel data analyses to show that decentralization improved net enrollments in primary schools and access to antenatal care for pregnant women. The main channel appears to be institutional, not fiscal. We offer the database as an additional contribution.

Filewod was concerned primarily to explore the selection and publication of playscripts in the journal, and the ways in which the discourse of CTR has shifted over the years and over its first three editorial “regimes”, as he calls them, to become increasingly pluralistic, concerning itself less with building a national theatrical identity and dramatic canon, and more with decentring that canon.

The attempt to provide an answer as to the origin of this popularity is embedded in the field concept. It also presents healers’ practices in the context of the rules, perceptions and rituals typical of these fields, as well as the real-life approbative, symbiotic and conflictual interactions.

In the late 1970s and early 80s, as the grip of the Brazilian military dictatorship loosened slightly and civil society transitioned into a more favorable position, artists were at the forefront of defining a new society. Musical artists Rita Lee and Roberto de Carvalho asked foreigners to rethink their homeland paradise in the first quote, taken from their 1982 recording. On the other hand, fellow musical artists Aldir Blanc and Maurício Tapajós saw the essence of the country as a “quarrel”, an existential conflict over the debt due to Brazil’s indigenous roots and insistent presence. Two contrasting perspectives expressed through music with one underlying commonality. Brazil is a product of the encounter, one enmeshed in complex and violent hierarchies.

Drought can affect even humid regions like northeastern North America, which experienced significant, well-documented dry spells in the 1930s, 50s, 60s, and 80s, and proxies tell us that in the years before instrumentally recorded climate, droughts could be even more severe. To get a more complete picture of pre-recorded climate, the spatial coverage of proxy-based climate reconstructions must be extended. This can better put in context past, current, and future climate, and it can lend anthropological and historical insights. With regard to tree rings as climate proxies, however, there is increasing evidence that relationships between tree growth and climate can be inconsistent over time, in some cases decreasing the utility of tree rings in the representation of climate. We developed a chronology from white cedar Thuja occidentalis tree ring widths for the period 1469-2015 C.E. with which we modeled the relationship between growth and July-September moisture conditions (Palmer Z index). The relationship was consistent across the period of instrumentally recorded climate, 1895-present, and the model explained 27% of variability. Therefore, we used the model to reconstruct July-September moisture conditions from 1546-2014. We found the most variable century to be the 20th, the least the 18th. The severest decade-scale droughts (≤0.75 SD from mean) occurred in the 1560s, 1600s/10s, 1630s, 1770s/80s, 1840s, and 1910s/20s, the severest pluvials (≥0.75 SD) in the 1610s/20s, 1660s/70s, and the 1970s/80s. The occasional occurrence of severe droughts throughout the reconstruction, increasing variability in the 20th century, and expected climate change-enhanced late summer drought, portend a future punctuated with severe droughts.

Abstract Antagonía is Luis Goytisolo’s masterpiece. In this article I present a quantitative and qualitative study of his prose with regards to sexuality. Through an analysis of keywords, concordances, dispersion, and discourses, I show that Antagonía feeds from two historical periods, namely the ending dictatorship and the new democratic transition. Some of its discourses are the product of the Spain of the 1970s and 80s. Among them, we find sexist, male chauvinist, and homophobic discourses latent during those times. Women and queer people are frequently characterized in a negative fashion. However, we also find more subversive discourses that empower women. In sum, I consider Goytisolo’s tetralogy a “fluid” or “transitional” novel in that it is imbued with contradictory discourses rooted in different historical periods.

AbstractEcumenical amnesia is accompanying much of the current debate on replacing the terms missiology or mission studies by that of intercultural studies or intercultural theology. This paper tries to address the loss of memory. By remembering the time when the new terminology was established (the 1970s and 80s) we become aware of the particularities, the challenges, and the limitations of the original vision of "intercultural theology". Among the particularities we will detect that of the professional missiologist working in the secular academy; challenges can be found in the reformulations of the missionary paradigm; and some may wish to see the limitations in the fact that intercultural theology began its life as part of a European conversation on culture and transcendence.

The purpose of the study is to analyze V. Sorokin’s conceptualist novel “Marina’s Thirtieth Love” (1984), to identify the features of its genre-structural constructions, to trace the connection of genre features of the “Soviet novel” with the tradition of Socialist realism literature and its deconstructions in the practice of conceptual art of the 1970s–80s. The paper identifies the target settings of the conceptual novelist Sorokin to overcome the principles and techniques of Soviet socialist realist art and to establish discrediting perspectives of perception of social and ideologically stable “concepts” that developed in the post-October period. It is established that the imitation base in Sorokin’s “Marina’s Thirtieth Love” was the so-called “production novel”, a thematic subspecies of prose of socialist realism.

For South Asian Canadians who migrated to Toronto in the 1970s, the only place for them to purchase and consume South Asian foodstuffs would have been in the area referred to as ‘Little India’, which later developed into what is referred to today as the Gerrard India Bazaar (GIB). Little India is located on Gerrard Street, encompassing the nine blocks from Greenwood Avenue to Coxwell Avenue. The very first South Asian entrepreneur in Gerrard Street was Gian Naaz, who rented the defunct Eastwood Theatre in 1972 and began showing films in Hindi and other South Asian languages. Naaz’s success inspired and attracted other South Asian entrepreneurs, some of whom opened restaurants and grocery stores. These early South Asian businesses on Gerrard Street combatted racism and racial stereotyping and the GIB was a microcosm of the violences South Asians experienced all across Toronto in the 1970s and 80s. As such, this paper tells the story of how South Asians, both them and their businesses, persevered and helped develop the GIB as an ethnic enclave because it allowed South Asians to affirm notions of home and belonging in Canada, all without ever having a distinct residential identity.

Land, as it constitutes one of the bases of agricultural production, has a special position in the economic-judiciary surroundings of states. In Hungarian history, land ownership has undergone many radical transitions. The decade starting from the political and land regulation reform is a short time in land tenure. In spite of it, there have been several important changes in land ownership structure. In the 1970s and 80s, large agricultural firms, especially co-operatives and state farms, were common in Hungary. State hegemony was typical of land ownership and use, with rather small, privately owned parcels. Since privatization began after 1989, this tendency has changed, with land owned by farmers. In the following article, I am going to review the laws regulating land ownership and land use in Hungary and in the European Union.

This article considers the German Grammar School Novel from the first half of the twentieth century an all but forgotten Germanophone prototype of campus fiction. Whereas the Anglo-American campus novel of the 1970s, 80s and 90s features university professors as future-related agents of Western counterculture and free thought, the Grammar School Novel satirizes the German grammar school teacher known as Gymnasialprofessor as a representative of the past-related order of the autocratic German state apparatus from the beginning of the twentieth century. As Heinrich Mann's 1905 novel Professor Unrat / Small Town Tyrant (the source text of Marlene Dietrich's debut movie The Blue Angel) may be considered a foundational work of the German Grammar School Novel corpus, the main part of the article offers a sample analysis of this text.

I summarize what we know of renormalons from the 1970s and 80s: their uses and theoretical status. It is emphasized that renormalons in QCD are closely related to the Wilsonean operator product expansion (OPE) — a setup ideally suited for dealing with the factorially divergent series reflecting infrared dynamics. I discuss a breakthrough proposal due to Uraltsev et al. to use renormalons to evaluate nonperturbative (power) corrections in the processes without OPE. Some fresh ideas which were put forward recently are briefly discussed too, with emphasis on a possible relationship between resurgence via trans-series and OPE. This article is devoted to the memory of my friend Kolya Uraltsev. I should emphasize that these are my personal recollections. Other people who closely knew Kolya may or may not agree with my opinions.

This article investigates various aspects of the popular online music genre known as vaporwave in order to understand how it functions as a form of socio-economic critique while problematizing aspects of identity. It begins by discussing some of the prominent features and objectives of vaporwave. Although there is much ambiguity in the overall attitude and message of vaporwave, its main unifying ideology is the re-configuration of pop music from the 1970s and ‘80s in order to critique and parody consumerism and corporate culture. With an analysis of one of the most well-known examples of vaporwave, Macintosh Plus’ Floral Shoppe (2011), the article explores the relationship of vaporwave to techno-Orientalism and the genre’s recent pernicious co-option by the conservative alt-right movement in the forms of Fashwave and Trumpwave.

In the 1970s and 80s, the philosophical works of Jacques Derrida became known well beyond the borders of France and beyond the limits of the French language. It was a radical and disturbing new form of materialism which made Derrida's thought so notorious: a philosophy of writing, of différance, of the movements of negation which always escape our grasp – with the effect that all theoretical trust in the idea of “presence” is undermined. Derrida develops his thought relentlessly on the border between form and content. It could be said that he balances on this border. And he conceives these diverse, experimental balancing acts, which are portrayed as readings of other texts, as a procedure in its own right – a procedure, called “deconstruction”, which has a distinctly irritating effect on the reader.

Transnational historical materialism as a perspectiveon global governanceThe main purpose of this article is to systematize various positions held by transnational historical materialists in relation to global governance. They believe that the aforementioned phenomenon is a concept whose purpose is to conceal the class character of control practices taking place in the contemporary capitalist economy. The common denominator is the historical relationship between globalization, commodification and liberalization, as processes which became particularly evident in the late 1970s and 80s. Hence, the first part of this article shows criticism of the UN vision of global governanceIn the second part, the issue analyzed is embedded in a theoretical outlook, based mainly on the works of Immanuel Wallerstein, Henk Overbeek, Robert Cox, Mark Duffield and Stephen Gill. The article ends with conclusions containing generalizations resulting from the analysis.
