A significant role in increasing competitiveness is played by the ability to respond quickly to consumer needs, which is possible with a clear management of the supply chain. Successful supply chain management requires a number of basic needs: the availability of the necessary logistics infrastructure, the availability of highly qualified personnel, management support, the presence of a team leader, cooperation in the logistics chain should be formed on partnership. Logistics supply chain management is a comprehensive and systematic approach that requires the simultaneous consideration and accounting of many supply and marketing operations.
Growing customer requirements and needs, progressive globalization and increasing pressure from market rivals are pushing modern businesses to integrate into supply chains. Natural disaster hits and damages the lives thousand of human beings and their infrastructure. Natural disaster can not be stopped but we can minimize the volume of devastation and destruction caused by the disaster. Especially, in third world countries the level to respond the disaster is limited and narrow, so these countries have to suffer more then the developed countries, where as in developed countries valuable recourses and effective planning are existed to deal with natural disasters. So this thing insists me to write something just to get know how about all humanitarian and relief activities.I have utilized the SCM Supply chain management practices and techniques in order to conquer barriers faced by logistician of humanitarian response/ relief operation during disaster. I will use methodology of empirical data technique, barriers will be discovered and analyzed then proposed solutions would be picked up from the literature of supply chain management for the barriers to effective humanitarian logistics.There is a mixture of SCM principle from various organizations such as military, private sector and nonprofit organization in order to provide a utility to disaster/ response operations. The present study aims to analyse the Tourism Supply Chain Management based on the published articles, available statistical data and the conducted research among the par- ticipants of the Tourism Industry (service provider/tour operator, intermediaries, cus- tomers). The paper has a goal to present a deeper insight into the factors affecting the choice of the distribution channel proposing a model based on the accumulated informa- tion regarding the tourism services distribution. In the research we pay a special atten- tion to the analysis of the factors motivating customers to choose traditional intermedi- aries at the time when all the operations can be done through the Internet. This problem would be analysed from both service provider and customers personal approach. The model also includes the future perspective of the development in the field of e-Tourism. The major contribution of this paper is the confrontation of the customers real prefer- ences and company‟s strategies with published earlier empirical research.

Within the field of supply chain management this work focuses on the logistics element studying from both theoretical and practical perspectives the role of logistics provision in creating enhanced value propositions. In particular, it focuses on relationship management involving logistics service providers and asks whether the "logistics triad", as it has become known, is a minimum appropriate unit of analysis for examining the role of modern outsourced logistics within the setting and goals of supply chain management. Recent decades have been characterised by a period of unprecedented change across industries and an intensification of the nature of competitiveness in the marketplace. One strategy deployed by companies has been to closely manage how they conduct their cross-functional business processes, both internally and externally. This inevitably has included developing relations with business partners. In freight distribution, as logistics service provision has become a popular outsourcing activity for many reasons, academic research has focused predominantly on the improved integration of logistics services within their specific supply chain network. Logistics has moved from being a liability to be managed, to a source of potential competitive advantage. Much of this literature has centred on the two-way or dyadic relationship between the outsourcer of logistics, the shipper, and the logistics service provider. However, in logistics provision, a third party logistics service provider in each supply chain it operates within has an inherent relationship with not one but two other connected parties: the party it is contracted to, the shipper (also known as the consigner) and the consignee. This leads to the conclusion that business relationships in logistics should be assessed and managed on a tripartite rather than a dyadic basis between all three inter-connected parties. This study explores this thinking assessing the feasibility of collaborative logistics provision on a tripartite rather than a dyadic basis. The research approach is structured in principally three phases. First, the inductive phase combines empirical research in the field of logistics service provision with critical literature reviews and has two principal aims. Firstly it aids the development of a fuller understanding of the issues and knowledge which contextually surround this evolving subject. Further, it helps refine the focus of the core research activity in the study, supporting the development of a theoretical framework and research questions on the subject of the collaborative logistics triad. The second phase is deductive in nature and features a longitudinal case study which assesses the strengths and weaknesses of selecting the logistics triad concept as a commercial approach. It is shown that when all three parties involved in the collaborative logistics triad focus on aligned goals with clear, shared performance indicators considerable improvement in logistics performance can be realised. The implications and potential for scaling up the collaborative logistics triad concept are then assessed. This is achieved by gauging the response of logistics professionals to questions stemming from the principal findings from both the exploratory study and the collaborative logistics triad case study at a major conference for logistics professionals. The overall findings have implications for supply chain management and logistics theorists as well as practising industry personnel involved in logistics provision. The study concludes that the collaborative logistics triad concept, although in theory a sensible unit of analysis, where improved performance by alignment of all three parties behind shared aims was demonstrated, in practice is a very challenging ideal to set up and sustain. However, there are clear advantages for those that can achieve it and it represents a good source of competitive advantage for those companies keen to compete through enhanced supply chain logistics practice excellence.

Blockchain technology is a peer-to-peer infrastructure based on distributed databases and smart contracts as the business logic. The distributed ledger technology eliminates the need for intermediaries disrupting the ownership model. It can have a tremendous impact on cross-organizational process automation when combined with other innovative technologies such as machine learning and additive manufacturing. Over the past few years as the blockchain technology concept has increasingly attracted many industries. The logistics and supply chain management industry have also realized its potential applications in enabling transparency, efficient information sharing, and food safety. Several companies have identified possible use cases that could benefit from blockchain over existing IT solutions. Thesis report provides an overview of current state of blockchain adoption, its technology architecture, review of how blockchain technology and smart contract works, and the benefits and challenges involved. Further, provided a deep dive into the problem of food safety, and the food supply chain and logistics ecosystem drivers. Highlighted, the current use cases of blockchain technology in supply chain and logistics along with critical success factors that companies consider essential for blockchain technology adoption. In the interviews conducted, digital innovators and senior executives are fairly positive about the blockchain technology and its benefits. However, factors such as under-developed ecosystem, lack of governance model and regulatory uncertainty impact its adoption. The proposed framework consists of a hybrid architecture of private and public blockchains, enabling immutable record sharing and monitoring while maintaining selective data privacy.

As a result, organizations have become aware of the fact that working alone isalmost impossible. Therefore, they began to understand that building relationships are keys toa successful business. In fact, as the business processes become more specialized,organizations prefer to focus on their core competencies and outsourcing becomes a relevantstrategy. Consequently parts of the value adding processes are displaced outside the four wallsof the firm which in turn, need a closer partnership (collaboration) between the partners.In today’s world logistics which includes transportation, inventory, order processing,purchasing, warehousing, materials handling, packaging, and much more, must continuouslybe developed to meet those described challenges. In fact, an effective logistics system is amust in order to meet and satisfy the customer demand. These developments require aconsiderable effort and significant capital. Accordingly, outsourcing the logistics activitiesbecome common and many companies leave these tasks to those who have availableresources and are competent to perform them. However, as mentioned, outsourcing withoutcooperation is inefficient.The objective of this research project is to introduce and describe collaborative logisticsmanagement and investigate its consequence on the supply chain. This purpose necessitates aframework to support the collaboration between the entities in the chain especially in terms oflogistics activities. Besides, the potential benefits (in terms of cost and services) in logisticscollaboration are supported by a lot of literatures. Despite the identified needs and potentialbenefits, there are still barriers through which is not started or not successful enough.Therefore, while those barriers must be identified, possible enablers should be designed andimplemented to attain desired benefits. This has been done through both a theoretical reviewand also a case study.

This research work as part of a Master thesis aims to analyse the potential influence of outsourced logistics function on supply chain management from a strategic perspective. To carry out this thesis work a survey is designed to collect all the necessary data, in order to investigate the influence of outsourced logistics activities. The survey targets professionals in the area of logistics from Sweden and France, a response rate of 10% and 36% has been respectively obtained. A statistical analysis has been realized by using the ANOVA method which allows us to evaluate statistically significant results. Hence the analysis carried out answersthe research questions formulated.Our findings have shown a similar trend in Sweden and France on the outsourced logistics activities; mainly transportation and custom brokerage respectively at 80% and 60% are outsourced. According to the responses obtained from the survey, these activities tend to influence supply chain management and its strategy.As for example in Sweden, outsourcing transportation tends to initiate a need of organizational collaboration for an effective supply chain. The following functions such as warehousing, inventory control, order processing, product assembly, reverse logistics and information technology are less outsourced. However we noticed an increase in their use and importance on supply chain management. This can be explained by the recent and significant developments in the field of Information Technology, as well as the growing importance of sustainability for firms. For example for Swedish organizations, outsourcing order processing seems to lead to a focus on responsive supply chain, to use of postponement strate gies and an importance in collaboration across the supply chain. Results are different for companies in France as the main influence of outsourcing logistics activities is more on seen the supply chain as a whole with a great importance in partnership and an interest in standardization of method and re-engineering the supply chain as well as in a sustainable way.For further research work, it will be immensely appealing to develop a framework that defines strategies and managerial issues within the supply chain, considering outsourced logistics functions. Moreover, this research work can be carried out by using different methodologies such as the use of interviews.

In recent years, effective logistics management has been recognised as a key opportunity to improve both the profitability and competitive performance of firms. Success in the global economy is largely dependent on a company's ability to achieve a superior global logistics competitive advantage. As one of the biggest emerging markets, China represents an enormous potential for companies and the opportunities available for those who succeed in organising an effective supply chain in China are outstanding (Jenkins, 2001). Compared with its counterparts in developed countries, Chinese logistics industry is still in its infancy. All organisations that wish to obtain a global competitive advantage by operating in China must address logistics and supply chain problems. The aims of this research are sixfold: 1) to establish worldwide trends in developing and implementing modem logistics and supply chain. management (SCM), classify the current state of logistics infrastructure in China, Chinese logistics and supply chain management provision, and to compare with those prevalent in western economies, 2) to determine the potential increase in Chinese logistics demand following China's accession to the World Trade Organization, 3) by examining the existing and potential barriers to the supply of logistics services in China, sets out to identify and develop effective logistics and SCM strategies and models appealing to the specific market environment, 4) to contribute to the understanding of both domestic and foreign companies' logistics requirements, 5) to evaluate a logistics service provider (LSP) selection method and rules to enhance the competitive advantage for companies, 6) to contribute to the understanding of a way to develop a modem logistics and SCM system in China. The new contribution to knowledge generated by this research fulfils aims 3,4,5,and 6. To obtain desired qualitative information, a partly structured, partly open-ended interview was developed to enable key questions to be answered, such as companies' existing logistics strategies, major barriers to obtain logistics services, logistics requirements, logistics performance, current collaborative relationships with LSPs, and future development in China's logistics industry. 24 companies in China were interviewed. These are comprised of ten domestic manufacturers, seven foreign manufacturers and seven LSPs. All the companies were interviewed face to face in Mandarin/Cantonese depending on their requirements. All the interviewees were from senior management. A combination of note taking, recording and transcription was used for all interviews. Two case studies were applied for gaining depth in the findings of the interviews. Major issues were further explored such as effective logistics and SCM strategies and models, and a way to develop the modem logistics and SCM system in China. The two selected cases included one domestic and one foreign manufacturer. The observation technique was used for collecting behavioural and attitudinal data in two companies' operation process, particularly in their LSPs selection process and problem solving strategies. From the primary research, the existing and potential barriers to the supply of logistics services in China are examined; two effective logistics and SCM strategies and models are identified and developed. The domestic and foreign companies' logistics requirements in detail are analysed. An LSP selection method for most companies operating in China is developed in a practical way. Three main elements of core competitiveness in logistics cooperation at three different lev~ls are identified. The rules to enhance companies' competitive advantage are analysed. The primary research contributes to the understanding of a way to develop a modem logistics and SCM system in China.

This thesis examines the effect of reverse logistics practices on supply chain performance in the construction sector that adversely impacts the environment. Mixed-method was adopted to examine the role of reverse logistics practices, environmental impacts of reverse logistics strategies, and the effect of reverse logistics on supply chain performance. Results revealed that waste management is the mere focus of reverse logistics in the industry, reuse is environmentally the best option, and reverse logistics favourably impact most of the performance criteria. The study provided recommendations for strategic decision and policy making for successful reverse logistics at macro, meso, and micro levels.

A headquarters-centered group company considered in this thesis consists of one headquarters and several operationally semi-autonomous production subsidiaries. This research investigates the situation where the headquarters provides supply chain management services shared among subsidiaries to take advantage of risk pooling effect, economies of scale, and information and resource sharing. This thesis considers three different but related scenarios. The first research scenario formulates two customer order management models. One is Headquarters-centered Common Order Management (HQ-COM) where customer orders are processed by the headquarters and then allocated to the subsidiaries. The other is Subsidiary-Autonomous Order Management (SD-AOM) where subsidiaries process customer orders relatively independent of each other. Two scenarios with demand uncertainty are simulated. One is that the order quantity exceeds the production capacity of each individual subsidiary so that the order has to be split before allocating to the subsidiaries. The other scenario is that the total quantity of selected customer orders is within the production capacity of a single subsidiary so that the orders should be merged into one batch before allocating to one subsidiary. The results show that HQ-COM outperforms SD-AOM in terms of both its performance and its robustness against demand variability. This achievement is largely due to the effects of pooling of different customer orders and sharing of production capacity among the subsidiaries. The second research scenario develops two sourcing management models: Headquarters-centered Common Sourcing Management (HQ-CSM) and Subsidiary-Autonomous Sourcing Management (SD-ASM). In HQ-CSM, two management policies are examined. One is Order Coordination policy in which common replenishment epochs are proposed by the headquarters and the subsidiaries are encouraged to coordinate the timing of their orders based on the common replenishment epochs. The other is Order Consolidation policy in which the headquarters places a combined order with the supplier. The results show that HQ-CSM outperforms SD-ASM in terms of cost and robustness against demand uncertainties. This achievement is largely due to the synergistic ordering process, the economies of scale and risk pooling effect by the implementation of transshipments. The results also reveal that Order Consolidation policy always performs better than Order Coordination policy especially in face of high demand uncertainties and high service level requirement. The third scenario considers a headquarters-managed centralized distribution center (HQ-CDC) serving multiple subsidiaries with stochastic demands. There are two kinds of inventory spaces: dedicated space and leased space. Two pricing policie--the constant pricing and the dynamic pricing--are compared. Two decision models are formulated. One is Integrated Model where the group company makes decisions on the replenishment and the space allocation simultaneously. The other is Bilevel Programming Model where the HQ-CDC and the subsidiaries make decisions sequentially. The results show that the HQ-CDC’s profit is noticeably improved in Bilevel Programming Model by the implementation of the constant pricing policy. The results also reveal that the leased space as a supplement of the reserved space leads to a more flexible space utilization and a reduced group company’s total cost especially in face of large demand and high demand fluctuation.

Since the signing of NAFTA in 1993, North American automotive OEMs have moved final assembly and other manufacturing operations from domestic locations to international locations. Mexico provides a relatively inexpensive labor force and is within geographic proximity of the US. Tier One suppliers have also relocated some operations to Mexico, such as American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) and its Guanajuato Gear & Axle (GGA) facility, where this study was performed. While the proportion of GGA's inbound material sourced in Mexico has increased, this still represents a small fraction of GGA's supply base. Numerous efforts have been made at localization of suppliers to Mexico, both through existing suppliers relocating and the development of Mexico-based suppliers. For the suppliers remaining in the US and Canada, there are numerous possible transportation solutions, including FTL, stacktrain, LTL, and milkruns. The crux of this thesis lies in the hypothesis that GGA would be better able to optimize logistics, if it had the ability to choose mode and frequency on a real time basis after having a more precise understanding of inbound material flow. A case study was then performed on the optimal manner in which to ship empty returnable containers to suppliers, which is established to be per container demand at the supplier site. Then, a model is developed and tested that takes as input the forecast of raw material shipments from GGA's entire supply base and outputs a set of packing lists that minimizes logistics cost while meeting supplier demand for empty containers.
(cont.) The model outputs are tested on a limited basis, but full implementation has not been conducted at the time of writing. Based on preliminary calculations, it is expected that implementation would have a significant impact on GGA logistics expense.

As consumer preferences shift towards online shopping and utilizing their homes as fitting rooms, traditional brick and mortar retailers are faced with the challenge to adapt. Many retailers are experiencing a growing number of returned merchandize, many of which cannot be easily resold to consumers due to various supply chain challenges. This thesis explores the opportunities to improve the consumer returns process and presents methods for modeling the supply chain process for reverse logistics in the retail industry derived from case studies. The model then allows for hypothesis testing. By changing parameters in the model, this thesis further explores the scenarios in which the supply chain process may be improved to increase margin and decrease cost. The primary recommendations include specific modifications to the current reverse supply chain flow, enabling new channels that improve speed and margin, as well as developing the decision tool further for better accuracy and integration into the supply chain.

On March 2011 a destructive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami along with nuclear explosions struck northeastern Japan; killing thousands of people, halting industry and crippling infrastructure. A large manufacturing company operating outside of Japan received the news in the middle of the night. Within a few hours of the tsunami hitting Japan, this manufacturer’s logistics team ran global materials management reports to communicate the precise status of the products originating from Japan to their entire global network of facilities. With this quick and far reaching communication the manufacturer was able to launch a successful contingency plan. Alternative suppliers, already existing as part of their global network, were evaluated and used to mitigate Japan’s disruptive impact. The resiliency of this manufacturer’s trusted network of supply chain trading partners allowed for minimum disruptions, saving countless money and maintaining continuity for its end-to-end supply chain. This manufacturer was part of a cloud-based supply chain that provided the catalyst to quickly shift its resources to allay the impact of no longer being able to receive product from Japan. Today's supply chains are global and complex networks of enterprises that aim to deliver products in the right quantity, in the right place, and at the right time in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable environment. To cope with internal and external supply chain instability and disruptions, supply chains need to be resilient to survive. A supply chain's ability to collaboratively share information with its supply chain partners is one of the most important factors that enhance a supply chain’s resilience. Cloud based supply chain management (SCM) creates a platform that enables collaborative information sharing that helps to identify, monitor and reduce supply chain risks, vulnerabilities and disruptions. However, supply chain academics and practitioners are at its infancy in understanding the capabilities of cloud based supply chains and its impact on resiliency. The goal of this dissertation is to explore how cloud based SCM make supply chains more resilient to disruptions. To achieve this goal the present research addresses the following fundamental research question: What is the impact of cloud based supply chain management (SCM) on supply chain resilience? To address this research question, this dissertation is comprised of three separate but interrelated essays. The first essay uses the systematically literature review (SLR) method to provide clear definitions of supporting constructs of supply chain resiliency (SCRES), classify the capabilities of SCRES, and identify existing research gaps and future SCRES research ideas. The second essay applies resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities as the theoretical lens to investigate the role of cloud based SCM in establishing SCRES. The second essay develops a theory-driven, conceptual model to illustrate and explain the relationships among cloud based SCM, SCRES, and the supply chain capabilities identified in the first essay. The third essay uses systems dynamics theory to develop two novel casual loop diagrams (CLD) and its equivalent systems dynamics (SD) models to quantitatively analyze the impact of cloud based information sharing on supply chain performance. A hospital supply chain is used as an illustrative example to show the positive impact on performance. Lead-time, inventory spend, and customer service levels are the comparative performance metrics used in this essay and are consistent with the findings of essays 1 and 2. One CLD and its equivalent SD model represent a traditional on-premise hospital supply chain information sharing platform and the other represent a cloud based hospital information sharing platform. The SD models simulate and compare the performance of the traditional and cloud based hospital supply chain platforms.

The overall objective of this thesis is to describe and explain how different quality management philosophies can be combined in the supply/demand chain, in order to contribute to its resilience. The analysis is both quantitative and qualitative, based on theory and literature related to TQM, Lean, Agile and Six Sigma, one literature study and three case studies that were performed in companies. The studies are related to four research questions and are presented in four papers. The first research question focuses on similarities and differences between the quality management concepts TQM, Lean and Six Sigma. The findings were that TQM, Six Sigma and Lean have many similarities, but they differ in some areas. For examples Lean addresses process flow and waste, whereas Six Sigma addresses variation and design. The conclusion is that there is a lot to gain if organisations are able to combine these three concepts, as they are complementary. Two case studies and a literature survey supported the findings. The second research question focuses on outcomes in a logistics process if using quality management. The findings were that the quality management approach leads to risks being mitigated, managed and monitored and ensures a more effective, robust and flexible process, very much in line with the Agility philosophy. Solutions for quicker response to customers have also been introduced. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies. The third research question focuses on how prepared the transport- and logistics-oriented companies are for the application of quality concepts and quality management philosophy. The findings were that they can be described as being TQM-oriented. The companies do not consider Lean and Six Sigma to be future trends. Focus is on the customer, while they do not focus on variations or removing waste. The findings were supported by a case study in 24 companies. The fourth research question focuses on how quality concepts can contribute to risk control and resilience in an organisation. A combined Lean/Six Sigma approach by using Six Sigma framework and the last phase, Perfection, in the Lean concept, implies that the companies’ resilience, due to their strengthened ability to handle variability, risk management and agility, was improved. The findings were supported by two case studies in seven companies.

Information technology (IT) has been used extensively by organisations in the supply chain (SC) to improve efficiency, control and competitive advantage. Research on this innovation has often neglected the drivers, facilitators and risks associated with the approaches adopted. In response, this research investigated and classified approaches to using IT in the SC and identified key drivers, facilitators and risks with each strategy. It forms a model to guide researchers and practitioners In the use of IT in the SC for organisational change. Leveraging investments in IT to improve SC efficiencies is complex and requires a well defined strategy that is supported by the drivers, facilitators, and risks (three variables) addressed in this study. In addition, organisations have different ambitions in relation to these investments with some aiming to make minor cost reductions whilst others aim to transform the organisa1ion through radical supply chain development. This ·research places special emphasis on the characteristics of IT and supply chain strategies that lead to organisational transformation. The main research question for this thesis is: How can firms most effectively leverage Information Technology Investments in the supply chain? A grounded theory approach has been used to build theory from journal articles published in 1997-2007 inclusive. A comprehensive meta-analysis of research articles, dealing with IT use In the SC and organisational change, from a broad range of academic business and scientific journals was undertaken to identify the drivers, facilitators and risks associated with leveraging IT Investments in the SC. The outcome of the meta-analysts is a model for IT use in the SC for organisational change. The results of the meta-analysis suggest that investment Inn in the SC cannot be successful unless the drivers of IT use are understood properly and the facilitating conditions are developed before using IT. A comprehensive list of drivers was reduced to ten key factors: 'improvement of Information quality', 'supply chain cost reduction', 'better decision making', 'reduction of cycle time and lead time', satisfaction of high quality service', 'real-time information accessibility', 'increased operational capability', 'sharing risks with others, 'market sharing and expansion', and 'better relationships with suppliers and individuals'. In a similar approach, ten critical facilitators were identified: 'firm's dynamic capability', 'enterprise application linkages through the chain', 'network of partnering firms or suppliers', 'willingness and trust of the partners and users', 'conductive culture of knowledge and information sharing', 'universally usable and accessible-systems and services', 'management guidance and trainings', 'expertise and experience', 'high levels of implementation planning', and 'community of users and suppliers for learning and sharing'. The key risks are also identified as these act as major constraints to the successful investment of IT in SC: 'poor ·understanding of firm's capability', 'inability to build trust between the SC partners and individuals', 'insufficient willingness of information sharing and support', 'lack of top management capability', 'incapability of managing sensitive data', and 'lack of control over the increased interdependencies'. Together these factors determine the overall level of success in relation to IT investment in the SC. Several SC strategies were identified and their characteristics defined as they form the basis of a model of IT use in the SC. These strategies include a low complexity cost reduction approach, a medium complexity collaborative approach, and a high complexity transformational approach. A key contribution of this thesis is the models and frameworks related to using IT in the SC. These provide significant directives for planning successful IT investment in the SC and related organisational transformation.

Self-regulatory Code of Conduct has widely been adopted by international brands to manage CSR issues in apparel and footwear supply chain for the last 2 decades. Increasingly, more apparel and footwear brands started to expand CSR scope to include environmental management in their supply chain. However, only very few international brands have disclosed their efforts on environmental management in their supply chain. This study aims to find out how apparel and footwear brands implement environmental management in their supply chain. Furthermore, what motivates them to carry out environmental management, and lastly, what challenges the industry encounters in carrying out effective environmental management. Primary and secondary data research were carried out in this study. Primary research, in a form of self-administered survey, was conducted for 11 brands and 15 of their respective suppliers. Secondary research was conducted through desktop research to gather additional information from brands, NGOs, academic studies and news. The study revealed environmental management in apparel and footwear supply chain is becoming more important. However, most of the brands’ approaches on environmental management are loose (i.e. lack industry-wide sustainably environmental management strategy), and small in scope (i.e. first tier supplier only). It is suggested apparel and footwear brands should improve effectiveness of environmental management program in their supply chain, by applying different implementation strategies internally, with both brands’ and suppliers’ governments, suppliers as well as their stakeholders.

The Catalytic Converter Industry (CCI), forms part of the component supply chain in the motor industry. The CCI is made up of a plethora of different suppliers, however for the purpose of this study, the focus will be on three of the five main suppliers, namely the ‘monolith substrate manufacturers’, the ‘coaters’, and the ‘canners’. The latter suppliers supply directly to the car manufacturers, also commonly referred to as the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), and are known as first tier suppliers. Some OEM’s exercise control over the entire supply chain. The control is exercised through various ‘customer requirements’ and ‘customer specific requirements’. Customer specific requirements influence the Quality Management System (QMS) of a supplier. Most OEM’s require that strategic suppliers must be ISO/TS 16949:2002 certified. ISO/TS16949:2002 refers to an internationally recognised specification, specifically adopted for the motor industry, and dictates the certification requirements that an organisation’s QMS must adhere to. The specification also makes provision for additional requirements that could be specified by the customer. In this instance, the customer is the OEM, in terms of which additional requirements can be specified over and above the certification requirements. For organisations manufacturing generic components for the various motor manufacturers, customer specific requirements add to the complexity of activities related to quality management systems. Applying an array of methods to minimise the risk of sending defective products to the customer by building each customer’s specific requirements into the quality management system, can lead to confusion and make work difficult to execute. To mitigate the complexity, the quality management systems should be simplified to ensure that the quality management system is entrenched and adds value to the organisations’ activities.

Vårt moderna samhälle är idag beroende av dagliga transporter som både är en stor kostnad för producerande företag och dessutom har en stor miljöpåverkan. Främst eftersom klimatfrågan idag debatteras flitigt men också för att det finns stora incitament för företagen att minska sina transportkostnader kommer vi, med största sannolikhet att se stora effektiviseringar av denna bransch inom en snar framtid. I detta arbete behandlas därför i vilken utsträckning två välkända teorier, Lean och Supply Chain Management, kan användas för att optimera transporterna främst vad gäller kostnad och miljöpåverkan. Efter att ha analyserat ett flertal rapporter som behandlat dagens transporter, transporttyper av olika slag och pågående miljöregleringar samt intervjuer med två svenska industribolag har vi kommit fram till att dessa två teorier inte lämpar sig i alla situationer. Lönsamheten i användandet av dessa två teorier beror på vilken teknisk grad företagets produkter har samt hur stor företagens produktion är. I framtiden tror vi dock att implementering av dessa teorier kommer öka men då i form av samarbeten flera företag emellan på grund av ökade kostnader i och med kommande miljöregleringar.
Our modern society is currently dependent on daily transportation that is both a major cost for manufacturing companies and that also have a big impact on our environment. Mainly because the climate today is heavily debated but also because there are great incentives for companies to reduce their transport costs, we will, in all likelihood, see major rationalization of this industry in the near future. This work therefore addresses the extent to which two well-known theories, Lean and Supply Chain Management, can be used to optimize transport primarily in terms of cost and environmental impact. After analyzing several reports dealt with today's transport, transportation of different kinds and ongoing environmental regulations and interviews with two Swedish industrial companies, we have concluded that these two theories are not suitable in all situations. Profitability in the use of these two theories depends on the technical level the company's products, and how big the company's production is. In the future, we believe that implementation of these theories will increase but then in form of collaboration between several companies due to increased transportation costs and future environmental regulations.

This thesis aims to explore the strategic roles of integrated logistics and supply chain management and global sourcing strategy for firms' performance, and to examine the direct and indirect relationships between integrated logistics and supply chain management, logistics performance, global sourcing performance, and further sustainable competitive advantage. This thesis adopts resource based theory to explore the relationships between a firm's specific capability and its performance and employs structural equation modelling in order to rigorously test the validation of the measurement models and examine the relationships between the construct variables. The data used were collected by postal questionnaire survey from logistics managers of 195 firms from the automobile and electronics industries based in Korea. The empirical research shows that (1) there exists a significant positive relationship between information & planning formality and strategic planning (2) strategic planning has a significant positive influence upon integrated logistics and SCM capability (3) internal integration & customer relationship has a significant effect on logistics performance (4) supplier integration and logistics integration & customer service exert significant impacts upon global sourcing performance (5) supplier integration has a significant effect on the firm's competitive market position (6) a superior logistics capability exerts a significant impact upon global sourcing performance and sustainable competitive advantage (7) global sourcing capability has a significant influence on sustainable competitive advantage and competitive position in the market and (8) competitive position in the market is significantly predicted by sustainable competitive advantage. In addition, this research presents many significant indirect effects between the constructs. Overall, this thesis suggests that a firm should develop an integrated logistics and SCM capability in balance and make efforts to build superior logistics and/or global sourcing capabilities in order to effectively obtain and/or reinforce its competitive market position and long-term survival and success.

Logistics managers work to create practices that reduce technostress, which is associated with diminished productivity in supply chain management. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the mitigation strategies that logistics managers at distribution centers used to reduce technostress with their employees in the Los Angeles County, California area. The conceptual framework included in this study was the sociotechnical systems theory. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 6 logistics managers from large distribution centers who implemented mitigation strategies that demonstrably reduced technostress with their employees. Public documents and physical artifacts reviewed in this study included productivity assessment tools, information and communication technology system training materials, technostress mitigation instruments, and information from technological devices. Data were analyzed through a process of pattern matching, cross-case synthesis, and systematic text condensation. The findings included 6 themes: reliance on internal information technology experts; hiring temporary experts; maintaining communication and training; using time management skills and organizing priorities; identification and understanding of employee differences; and implementing well-being, fitness, and health programs. These findings could contribute to positive social change by providing logistics managers with strategies to reduce technostress, which could lead to improved employee well-being, better work conditions, and increased productivity for greater company profitability that could produce a more thriving and prosperous community.
