This chapter describes the history and organization of palliative care volunteering in The Netherlands, volunteer roles in different settings, legislative and political influences on palliative care volunteering. Today 200 member organizations are part of the umbrella organization VPTZ Nederland. Together, these member organizations run 87 almost-like-home-houses where medical staff are not employed by the hospice, but visit and care for the patient and family when needed, just as in the home situation, in 18 high-care hospices (with medical staff) and nine palliative care units (units in nursing homes that also have significant involvement of volunteers) and 135 volunteer home care teams. In 2015 10,893 volunteers were working in these organizations. In addition special attention is given to the concept of ‘being there’, which is seen as key to the identity, value and quality of hospice and palliative care volunteering.

McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission (FEC) and Citizens United v. FEC have transformed the playing field. Citizens United allows those who run corporations to leverage their influence by using the massive funds accumulated by these entities. McCutcheon empowers a few individuals to make contributions to multiple campaigns around the entire country. Now a few individuals can influence entire elections cycles—essentially purchase public policy. Just one year after Citizens United was decided, the share of total campaign giving by the top 0.01 percent of all campaign donors rose over 50 percent. Following McCutcheon, the number of $500,000-plus gifts increased from 14 to 134, and the number of $1 million plus gifts skyrocketed from eight to sixty-three. This strong libertarian paradigm has caused legislators to align with the interests of donors rather than constituents. This violates any number of constitutional pillars including divided power, federalism, the right to vote, and constituent representation.

Chapter 13 describes how the author led the development of eye services in the Gambia by concentrating on creating a team of people of different skills who together could—and did—bring enormous improvements to the community. It shows how the service and team were built, and prevention of disease as well as treatment. It covers how the author developed a plan and a model that engaged every member of her wider team and involved patients and community members, and shows the impact this important work has had on the West Africa region and the world, as well as improving eye health in the Gambia itself. It also describes how to run a specialist service in a resource-poor country and how to work across country boundaries within a region.

This paper examines the impact of the government input subsidy—the National Agriculture Input Voucher—on farmers’ production and welfare in Tanzania as well as the factors that influence agricultural production in the country. The analysis is based on the Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture for 2008–13. The study uses panel fixed effects and difference-in-difference and propensity score matching methods to examine the two objectives. The results show that the input subsidy programme resulted in an initial increase in maize and rice production but not in the long run and only in a few regions. In addition, there was a decrease in total production in the southern region and the programme had little effect on farmers’ welfare. The results show that this programme only partly met the expected outcomes in Tanzania due to mistargeting, inaccurate identification of households, and poor implementation.

The Mississippi Freedom Vote of 1963 is no small thing. It is a complex historical and rhetorical phenomenon worthy of in-depth analysis. The Mississippi Freedom Vote of 1963 was an integrated citizens’ campaign to empower and promote agency for blacks within the state. With candidates Aaron Henry, a black pharmacist from Clarksdale, for governor and Reverend Edwin King, a white college chaplain from Vicksburg, for lieutenant governor, the Freedom Vote ran a platform aimed at obtaining votes, justice, jobs, and education for blacks in the Magnolia state. Though the actual campaign took place October 13 through November 4, the Freedom Vote’s impact far transcends those few weeks in the fall of 1963 and extends beyond the borders of Mississippi. Campaign manager Bob Moses was right to label the Freedom Vote “one of the most unique voting campaigns in American history.” It is precisely how the rhetorical forms employed by the Freedom Vote catalyze agency that is so appealing and unique. Educating people about citizenship and then providing an opportunity to practice this phronesis in real time created a groundswell of political activity in Mississippi. The Freedom Vote campaign employed the rhetorical tactics of image events to protest voting rights inequalities by executing a campaign that allowed participants to enact the very agency that was being criticized. The campaign turned protestors in to citizens, allowing local citizens to experience empowerment, and it allowed organizers to learn valuable lessons that they would employ time and time again.

This edited volume is based on the European Law Institute’s (ELI) project ‘Rescue of Business in Insolvency Law’. The project ran from 2013 to 2017 under the auspices of the ELI and was conducted by Bob Wessels and Stephan Madaus, who were assisted by Gert-Jan Boon. The study sought to design (elements of) a legal framework that will enable the further development of coherent and functional rules for business rescue in Europe. This includes certain statutory procedures that could better enable parties to negotiate solutions where a business becomes financially distressed. Such a framework also includes rules to determine in which procedures and under which conditions an enforceable solution can be imposed upon creditors and other stakeholders despite their lack of consent. The project had a broad scope, and extended to consider frameworks that can be used by (non-financial) businesses out of court, and in a pre-insolvency context. Part I of this book, the ELI Instrument as approved by the ELI Council and General Assembly, features 115 recommendations on a wide variety of themes affected by the rescue of financially distressed businesses, such as the legal rules for professions and courts, treatment and ranking of creditors’ claims, contract, corporate and labour law as well as laws relating to transaction avoidance. Part II consists of national reports that sketch the legal landscape in 13 States and of an ‘Inventory Report on International Recommendations from Standard-Setting Organisations’, both of which provided insight for the drafting of the Instrument. This volume is designed to assist those involved in a process of law reform and those setting standards for soft law in the business rescue context.

This is the first major study based on Soviet documents and revelations of the Soviet state security during the period 1939-1953—a period about which relatively little is known. The book documents the role of Stalin and the major players in massive crimes carried out during this period against the Soviet people. It also provides the first detailed biography of V. S. Abakumov, Minister of State Security, 1946-1951. Based on Glasnost revelations and recently released archival material, this study covers the operations of Soviet state security from Beriia's appointment in 1938 until Stalin's death. The book pays particular attention to the career of V. S. Abakumov, head of SMERSH counterintelligence during the war and minister in charge of the MGB (the predecessor of the KGB) from 1946 until his removal and arrest in July 1951. The author argues that terror remained the central feature of Stalin's rule even after the Great Terror and he provides examples of how he micromanaged the repressions. The book catalogs the major crimes committed by the security organs and the leading perpetrators and provides evidence that the crimes were similar to those for which the Nazi leaders were punished after the war. Subjects covered include Katyn and its aftermath, the arrest and execution of senior military officers, the killing of political prisoners near Orel in September 1941, and the deportations of various nationalities during the war. The post-war period saw the Aviator and Leningrad affairs as well as the anti-cosmopolitan campaign whose target was mainly Jewish intellectuals. Later chapters cover Abakumov's downfall, the hatching of the Mingrelian and Doctors plots and the events that followed Stalin's death. Finally, there are chapters on the fate of those who ran Stalin's machinery of terror in the last 13 years of his rule. These and other topics will be of concern to all students and scholars of Soviet history and those interested in secret police and intelligence operations.

Nos dias atuais, a administração (de empresas ou pública) tem assimilado conceitos e características de natureza empreendedora, que levam a mudanças de paradigmas dentro da própria área do conhecimento. Nesse limiar, a administração e o empreendedorismo se tornaram indissociáveis não apenas a nível acadêmico, mas na prática gerencial cotidiana. Com efeito, esse cenário chama a atenção dos pesquisadores e, cada vez mais, estudos são desenvolvidos com o foco em novas aplicações do conhecimento gerencial. É pensando nessa indissociabilidade, que este livro surge. Organizado em duas partes, o livro traz 15 capítulos que abordam temas extremamente atuais e emergentes que partem, ora de uma compreensão macro, ora de uma compreensão micro dos fenômenos que impactam diretamente as organizações, passando por temas, como: perfil empreendedor, liderança, pandemia, gestão estratégica, gestão de serviços, gestão de pessoas, gestão pública. Trazendo dados demográficos e socioeconômicos, o estudo contribui com uma discussão extremamente pertinente para a compreensão do empreendedorismo por necessidade e seu impacto direto no desenvolvimento produtivo local – um cenário muito semelhante ao contexto brasileiro. O Capítulo 3, “A Importância da Gestão em Tempos de Crises: Uma Reflexão sobre a Pandemia da Covid-19”, trata de uma temática emergente e, por meio de uma interessante revisão de literatura, destaca práticas e ações a nível gerencial que impactam diretamente a vida nas organizações no momento pandêmico. Nos Capítulos 4 e 5, “Financiamento para Inovação: Pontos Positivos e Negativos do Crowdfunding” e “Financiamento da Inovação por Meio do Crowdfunding: Fatores de Sucesso”, descrevem os principais pontos (positivos e negativos) da prática de financiamentos coletivos ou crowdfunding, por meio de uma análise focada na inovação tecnológica. Os capítulos trazem contribuições principalmente para micro e pequenas empresas que atuam com inovação e necessitam superar dificuldades de acesso a recursos financeiros. No Capítulo 6, “Empresas Familiares: Gestão e Características Empreendedoras em Tempos de Pandemia da COVID-19”, tem-se um levantamento com gestores de empresas familiares, em que são discutidas as relações gerenciais e sociais com implicação direta no cotidiano organizacional, com um enfoque direto neste tipo de organização. Além disso, é um estudo extremamente atual, pois traz uma contextualização sobre os desafios e impactos da Pandemia da COVID-19 no mundo empresarial. O Capítulo 7, “A Liderança Feminina nas Organizações de Trabalho: Desafios e Construções Sociais”, traz uma importante discussão sobre a igualdade de gênero e os desafios que as mulheres enfrentam no mercado de trabalho e no mundo empresarial. Por meio de uma pesquisa empírica, o capítulo aponta para uma profunda reflexão sobre o enfrentamento à desigualdade que envolve, de maneira coletiva, diversas áreas do conhecimento, instâncias e organizações sociais e educacionais. Fechando a primeira parte do Livro, o Capítulo 8, “Emergencia de Nuevos Modelos de Gestión Estrategica” (em tradução livre, Surgimento de Novos Modelos de Gestão Estratégica), embarca em uma análise teórica visando responder à seguinte questão: quais novas perspectivas e modelos de gestão estratégica estão surgindo para dar suporte ao desenvolvimento das empresas na atualidade? No Capítulo 8, “Abordagem de Servicescape: Análise e Influência da Experiência do Consumidor em um Ambiente de Serviço”, analisa-se a influência da servicescape (ambiente físico onde acontece o serviço) na experiência do consumidor no processo de aquisição do serviço. Por meio de um estudo bibliométrico, o capítulo aprofunda sobre o servicescape e sobre o experienscape, levando em consideração também o que tem sido produzido academicamente na temática. O Capítulo 9, “A Importância do Treinamento como Estratégia de Potencialização do Desempenho dos Colaboradores nas Organizações”, faz uma breve análise sobre Treinamento, Desenvolvimento & Educação (TD&E), identificando os fatores que tornam esse processo tão relevante para as organizações, especialmente como estratégia de potencialização do desempenho dos colaboradores. Trazendo alguns conceitos gerais sobre a temática, o capítulo traça uma relação entre o processo de treinamento a nível de gestão de pessoas e o aumento da produtividade e a redução de custos. O Capítulo 11, “Cultura Organizacional: Uma Revisão Narrativa acerca das Tipologias e Influências na Gestão”, analisa os eventuais impactos que a cultura organizacional perfaz na gestão das organizações. Compreendendo as diversas tipologias culturais existentes, o capítulo oferece uma visão da gestão da cultura organizacional em prol da eficiência e do aumento da produtividade. No Capítulo 12, intitulado “Aplicação da Teoria das Filas em uma Hamburgueria: Um Estudo de Caso”, descreve uma pesquisa empírica realizada em um restaurante, do tipo hamburgueria, abordando-se a concepção do sistema de filas. O capítulo traz resultados interessantes para a compreensão dos fatores que envolve a gestão de filas dentro um ramo de negócio em extrema expansão no Brasil, que é o mercado de hambúrgueres e lanches. A partir deste momento, o livro se foca em estudos relacionados à gestão pública, trazendo 3 estudos que, individualmente, abordam a administração a nível municipal, estadual e federal. No Capítulo 13, “A Maturidade da Gestão do Conhecimento na SEAPI – Secretaria da Agricultura, Pecuária e Irrigação do Rio Grande do Sul (RS)”, tem-se um estudo que analisa como a gestão do conhecimento está inserida no ambiente organizacional de uma secretaria de estado, fazendo um paralelo teórico-empírico com o nível de maturidade gerencial. Este capítulo contribui especialmente para o mapeamento da maturidade em gestão do conhecimento em organizações públicas, apresentando ferramentas e técnicas para este tipo de análise. No Capítulo 14, intitulado “Avaliação dos Processos Gerenciais da Prefeitura de Luis Gomes/RN à Luz do Modelo de Excelência em Gestão Pública”, abordam-se os processos administrativos e de prestação de serviços de uma prefeitura. Neste capítulo, é utilizado um modelo padrão de análise baseado em excelência, cuja principal contribuição está em propor pontos de correção nos processos gerenciais cotidianos e ações estratégicas a serem realizadas para a melhoria da prestação de serviços aos cidadãos. Dando continuidade aos estudos relacionados à gestão pública, tem-se, por fim, o Capítulo 15, “Pregão Eletrônico nas Aquisições Públicas Federais: Economia e Impactos a Luz da Normativa 03/2011”, que trata do impacto causado na economia creditada ao uso do Pregão Eletrônico, após a implementação da Instrução Normativa nº 3/2011 do Ministério do Planejamento, Orçamento e Gestão (MPOG). Nesse sentido, o capítulo traz uma análise sobre a teoria dos leilões e a dinâmica do Pregão Eletrônico, à luz das demandas e necessidades da administração pública federal. Cabe ressaltar que este livro é fruto do esforço de cooperação desenvolvido por pesquisadores de diversas Instituições nacionais e estrangeiras, em que cada estudo apresentado perfaz uma particular contribuição para a área do conhecimento. E embora não se pretenda responder a todas as questões relacionadas à Administração e ao Empreendedorismo, esta obra traz algumas reflexões e discussões atuais que podem, de algum modo, contribuir positivamente com o avanço do conhecimento e incrementar a literatura na área.
