Carbazole is an important type of tricyclic nitrogen containing compound and isolated first from coal tar in 1872 by Graebe and Glazer. Carbazole alkaloids have received considerable attention since their discovery in the 1960’s and their derivatives are well known for their pharmacological activities. Many recent studies have reported that carbazole derivatives exhibit a variety of biological activities. Toxicity of test compound in cells was determined by MTT assay based on mitochondrial reduction of yellow MTT tetrazolium dye to a highly blue colored formazan product. Among the ten synthesized compounds, 12c, 12d, 12e, 12f, 12g and 12i were showed good activity. In which 12c, 12d and 12e showed moderate activity on MCF-7 cancer cell line. Compounds 12f, 12g and 12i showed more potent activity than control. Compounds 12f, 12g and 12i showed more potent activity than control adriamycin. In future, we will plan further mechanistic studies on most potent active compounds 12f, 12g and 12i.

14S,22-Dihydroxy-docosa-4Z,7Z,10Z,12E,16Z,19Z-hexaenoic acid (maresin-L1) and 14R,22-dihydroxy-docosa-4Z,7Z,10Z, 12E,16Z,19Z-hexaenoic acid (maresin-L2) were chemically synthesized. They were identical to activated macrophage-produced counterparts and their total synthesis was highly stereoselective, as revealed by chiral LC-UV-MS/MS analysis. The synthesis involved the following steps: (1) kinetic resolution of a racemic allylic alcohol by the asymmetric epoxidation; (2) transformation of the epoxy alcohol to γ-hydroxyenal derivative; and (3) the Wittig reaction to furnish the Z-olefin.

A synthesis of dialkyl (12E,14E)-7-oxo-10,11-dihydro-7H,9H-azocino[2,1-a]benzo[de]isoquinoline-13,14-dicarboxylates through a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of azomethine ylides, generated in situ from proline and acenaphthylene-1,2-dione, with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates is described. According to the X-ray diffraction data, the tetrahydroazocine ring has a rigid twist-boat form with approximate local C2 symmetry.

L’article vise à rendre compte de l’évolution des dialogues dans un corpus composé de 15 textes narratifs médiévaux (vies de saints, chansons de geste et romans). Elle se focalise sur le système de balisage des prises de parole qui apparaît dès les débuts du français. La comparaison des dialogues et des monologues permet d’observer le développement progressif des premiers au cours du 12e siècle ainsi que des changements dans leur structuration interne. D’un côté, les prises de parole ne sont plus aussi nettement séparées les unes des autres qu’elles l’étaient généralement dans la période ancienne et ce sont les incises internes aux prises de parole qui indiquent le changement de locuteur. D’un autre côté, les séquences dialogales de plus en plus longues et nombreuses tendent à constituer des unités discursives de premier plan dans certains textes narratifs. Vers la fin du 12e siècle, de nouvelles configurations semblent apparaître, qui accentuent l’intégration de ces séquences au récit environnant par le biais notamment du passage du discours indirect au discours direct.

The two oxylipins 7S,14S-dihydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (diHDHA) and 7S,17S-diHDHA [resolvin D5 (RvD5)] have been found in macrophages and infectious inflammatory exudates and are believed to function as specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). Their biosynthesis is thought to proceed through sequential oxidations of DHA by lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes, specifically, by human 5-LOX (h5-LOX) first to 7(S)-hydroxy-4Z,8E,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z-DHA (7S-HDHA), followed by human platelet 12-LOX (h12-LOX) to form 7(S),14(S)-dihydroxy-4Z,8E,10Z,12E,16Z,19Z-DHA (7S,14S-diHDHA) or human reticulocyte 15-LOX-1 (h15-LOX-1) to form RvD5. In this work, we determined that oxidation of 7(S)-hydroperoxy-4Z,8E,10Z,13Z,16Z,19Z-DHA to 7S,14S-diHDHA is performed with similar kinetics by either h12-LOX or h15-LOX-1. The oxidation at C14 of DHA by h12-LOX was expected, but the noncanonical reaction of h15-LOX-1 to make over 80% 7S,14S-diHDHA was larger than expected. Results of computer modeling suggested that the alcohol on C7 of 7S-HDHA hydrogen bonds with the backbone carbonyl of Ile399, forcing the hydrogen abstraction from C12 to oxygenate on C14 but not C17. This result raised questions regarding the synthesis of RvD5. Strikingly, we found that h15-LOX-2 oxygenates 7S-HDHA almost exclusively at C17, forming RvD5 with faster kinetics than does h15-LOX-1. The presence of h15-LOX-2 in neutrophils and macrophages suggests that it may have a greater role in biosynthesizing SPMs than previously thought. We also determined that the reactions of h5-LOX with 14(S)-hydroperoxy-4Z,7Z,10Z,12E,16Z,19Z-DHA and 17(S)-hydroperoxy-4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,15E,19Z-DHA are kinetically slow compared with DHA, suggesting that these reactions may be minor biosynthetic routes in vivo. Additionally, we show that 7S,14S-diHDHA and RvD5 have anti-aggregation properties with platelets at low micromolar potencies, which could directly regulate clot resolution.

Cet article présente les résultats d’une recherche sur les perceptions d’élèves du secondaire à propos de la diversité sexuelle, afin d’identifier leurs constructions hétéronormatives. L’étude de cas qualitative a été menée auprès de 24 participant⋅e⋅s provenant d’une école secondaire du Grand Vancouver, au moyen d’un questionnaire, d’enregistrements sonores de discussions réalisées en classe, d’un journal de bord et de huit entretiens individuels semi-dirigés. Quoique quelques participant⋅e⋅s aient manifesté de la pensée critique et de l’introspection, plusieurs tendaient à réaffirmer des visions du monde hétéronormatives, à normaliser la diversité sexuelle et à minimiser l’impact de l’homophobie comme forme de discrimination systémique. Des pistes d’action sont proposées pour guider le développement d’une pratique pédagogique queer.

Abstract BACKGROUND Resolvins and protectins are families of local lipid mediators generated from the n-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during self-limited resolution of inflammation. We aimed to develop a liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay to measure these lipid mediators in human blood following n-3 fatty acid supplementation and to determine whether the blood collection method affects their measured concentration. METHODS Blood samples from 20 healthy volunteers enrolled in an n-3 fatty acid supplementation trial were collected in EDTA, heparin, or citrate, or prepared as serum after volunteers had undergone 3 weeks of supplementation. Plasma or serum was purified by solid-phase chromatography and analyzed with LC-MS/MS. RESULTS The assay identified 18R/S-hydroxy-5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z,16E-eicosapentaenoic acid (18R/S-HEPE); 17S-hydroxy-4Z,7Z,10Z,13Z,15E,19Z-docosahexaenoic acid (17R/S-HDHA); 7S,8R,17S-trihydroxy-4Z,9E,11E,13Z,15E,19Z-docosahexaenoic acid (RvD1); 7S,8R,17R-trihydroxy-4Z,9E,11E,13Z,15E19Z-docosahexaenoicacid (17R-RvD1); 7S,16R,17S-trihydroxy-4Z,8E,10Z,12E,14E,19Z-docosahexaenoic acid (RvD2); 10S,17S-dihydroxy-4Z,7Z,11E,13Z,15E,19Z-docosahexaenoicacid (10S,17S-DiHDHA); and 10R,17S-dihydroxy-4Z,7Z,11E,13E,15Z,19Z-docosahexaenoic acid (protectin D1, PD1). The limits of detection and quantification were 3 pg and 6 pg on-column, respectively. The pathway precursors 18R/S-HEPE and 17R/S-HDHA, but not the resolvins, were lower in serum compared with plasma. After n-3 fatty acid supplementation, mean (SD) EDTA plasma concentrations were: 18R/S-HEPE 386 (56) pg/mL, 17R/S-HDHA 365 (65) pg/mL, RvD2 26 (4) pg/mL, RvD1 31 (5) pg/mL, and 17R-RvD 161 (7) pg/mL. 10S,17S-DiHDHA and PD1 concentrations were below the limit of quantification. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study reporting 17R/S-HDHA, RvD1, and RvD2 concentrations measured in human blood following oral n-3 fatty acid supplementation. The concentrations of the antiinflammatory lipid mediators RvD1 and RvD2 were within the biological range known to have antiinflammatory and proresolving activities in isolated human leukocytes and in in vivo studies in mice.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify the sex pheromone of Spodoptera cosmioides and to evaluate whether there is pheromone cross-attraction in Spodoptera sp. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Spodoptera cosmioides gland extracts were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Wind tunnel and electrophysiology experiments were conducted to evaluate the role of gland compounds. In the field, different pheromone traps were tested: S. frugiperda commercial lure; (9Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (Z9-14:OAc) and (9Z,12E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate (Z9,E12-14:OAc) trap; two females of S. cosmioides trap; and hexane control trap. Four acetates were identified in the S. cosmioides female gland extracts as Z9-14:OAc, Z9,E12-14:OAc, (11Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc) and hexadecyl acetate (16:OAc), but only the first two acetates induced electrophysiological responses from S. cosmioides male antennae. In wind tunnel experiments, S. cosmioides and S. frugiperda males responded more strongly to conspecific blends; however, there was some cross-attraction, as 47% males of S. frugiperda and 25% males of S. cosmioides responded to heterospecific blends. In field experiments, S. frugiperda and S. cosmioides showed the same response pattern as observed in the wind tunnel bioassays. In summary, the sex pheromone components of S. cosmioides are Z9-14:OAc and Z9,E12-14OAc; they are important for conferring species specificity, and there is pheromone-mediated cross attraction between S. frugiperda and S. cosmioides.

Citrus viroid-induced resistance to Phytophthora infection in citrus was measured by the number of Phytophthora sporangia in ‘Rio Red’ grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) bait tissue infected with citrus viroids compared with non-inoculated controls. Different viroid isolates containing mixtures of viroids [Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd), Hop stunt viroid (HSVd), Citrus viroid III (CVd-III), Citrus viroid IV (CVd-IV)] were designated by plant numbers and sources. Source 13E was associated with the lowest number of sporangia in bark, leaves, and roots used as baits, whereas CEVd E9, a known severe CEVd isolate, significantly reduced the number of sporangia in leaves and bark. Sources 1A, 2E, 3E, 4D, and 6E showed a significantly reduced number of sporangia on bark, leaves, and roots compared with healthy plants and 44A; however, their effect was not as pronounced as that of E9 and 13E. Sources 12E and 44A did not suppress sporangia production. Previous reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that all source plants had mixed infections with several viroids, whereas 12E and 44A contained no viroids. In addition to confirming the earlier reports on the suppression of Phytophthora infection in general, our study showed significantly reduced Phytophthora sporangia development resulting from a number of viroids in mixed infection, but there did not appear to be any effect related to viroid species. To determine if concentration affected resistance to Phytophthora, phenolic acids were extracted. Extraction of phenolic acids with 80% ethanol was more efficient compared with 100% methanol and an acetonitrile–water mixture. High-performance liquid chromatography revealed no notable detection of salicylic acid in healthy and viroid-infected plants, but there was a small peak corresponding to salicylic acid in Phytophthora-infected and both viroid and Phytophthora-infected plants. Flavone was detected in all the source plants with a slight increase in Phytophthora-infected and both viroid and Phytophthora-infected plants. A peak corresponding to quercetin dehydrate was detected in Phytophthora-infected plants. Efficient use of the right viroid isolate(s) can result in suppression of Phytophthora infection of citrus.

Kaempferia galanga is a tropical plant with an impressive range of food and medicinal uses. This study, therefore, investigated the variation in yields, physicochemical properties, chemical compositions, and antioxidant activities of rhizome oils from two K. galanga varieties, K. galanga bigger rhizomes (V1) and K. galanga smaller rhizomes (V2), isolated by steam distillation (S) and maceration (M) techniques. The air-dried rhizomes' oil contents were found to be 2.81±0.09% (SV1O), 7.93±0.20% (MV1O), 3.60±0.10% (SV2O), and 8.76±0.22% (MV2O), respectively. From the GC-MS analysis, the SV1O, MV1O, SV2O, and MV2O samples contain 49, 48, 61, and 56 compounds, respectively. Furthermore, ethyl trans-p-methoxycinnamate was the most prevalent chemical constituent in four oils with a percentage contribution of 43.37% (SV1O), 60.62% (MV1O), 24.92% (SV2O), and 57.17% (MV2O). Several long-chain alcohols (6Z,9Z-pentadeca-6,9-dien-1-ol, 9E,12E-octadeca-9,12-dien-1-ol, heptadecan-1-ol), aldehyde (Z-octadec-9-enal), carboxylic acids (4-(4-methoxyphenyl)oxane-4-carboxylic acid, hexadecanoic acid), diterpene sandaracopimaradiene, steroid ergosterol, and alkaloid 2-imino-3-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one, were also identified in K. galanga rhizome oils isolated by maceration method. In addition, all oils showed high antioxidant activities with the IC50 values of 86.10±1.51, 85.24±1.48, 89.19±1.72, and 86.49±2.03 μg/mL for SV1O, MV1O, SV2O, and MV2O, respectively.

Um experimento em casa de vegetação foi conduzido entre novembro de 2005 e abril de 2006, na UNESP, campus de Jaboticabal, SP, objetivando estudar a produção de massa seca, a distribuição e o acúmulo de macronutrientes por Ipomoea nil, uma importante infestante de culturas anuais e perenes no Brasil. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 7 litros com substrato de areia e irrigadas diariamente com solução nutritiva de Hoagland & Arnon. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos corresponderam às épocas de avaliação, em intervalos de 14 dias, iniciandose 21 dias após a emergência (DAE). Em cada avaliação, as plantas de quatro vasos foram analisadas quanto ao acúmulo de massa seca e à nutrição mineral. I. nil apresentou pequeno acúmulo de massa seca e de macronutrientes no início da fase experimental. Esses acúmulos se intensificaram após 77 DAE, atingindo o máximo valor teórico aos 123, 122, 124, 121, 119, 121 e 125 DAE, para massa seca, N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, respectivamente. Folhas e caules foram os principais órgãos responsáveis pelo acúmulo de massa seca por plantas de I. nil. K e N foram os macronutrientes extraídos em maior quantidade por essa espécie.

<p>Maria Gerolymatou</p><p> Thèbes, centre de commerce et de communications au 12e s.</p><p>Thèbes était une des étapes les plus importantes sur l'axe terrestre transversal qui assurait la communication entre le Péloponnèse et la Grèce centrale et septentrionale. Cet axe qui passait par Corinthe, Thèbes, Zètouni, Larissa et aboutissait à Thessalonique où il faisait jonction avec la Via Egnatia, a acquis une grande importance à partir du Xle siècle, lorsque le danger bulgare fut écarté du sud des Balkans. Il était souvent préféré à la voie maritime pour les déplacements des marchands entre Corinthe, Thèbes, Thessalonique et parfois même Constantinople. Conséquence de la revalorisation de la route terrestre fut le développement de nouveaux centres de commerce et d'échelles maritimes à des endroits où l'axe se rapprochait du littoral.</p><p>La floraison de l'artisanat de soie à Thèbes a entraîné le développement dans cette ville d'une classe aisée d'artisans, différenciée nettement de l'aristocratie locale. Les Vénitiens étant les seuls marchands Italiens qui aient pu obtenir la permission impériale de faire commerce à Thèbes, il est possible que les nouveaux centres de commerce n'aient pas seulement répondu à l'impératif de trouver de nouveaux marchés d'approvisionnement ou de nouveaux débouchés commerciaux; ils ont sans doute permis aux autres marchands étrangers, auxquels l'accès au marché de soieries de Thèbes était interdit, de contrecarrer l'interdiction et de se procurer par les Vénitiens des tissus de soie dans les autres marchés de l'espace géographique de la Grèce centrale où ils pouvaient se rendre sans difficultés et où ils entretenaient même des quartiers. Las redes de drenaje pueden presentar problemas que dificultan el manejo de las aguas pluviales debido a fenómenos climáticos como las temporadas de lluvias y las temporadas de sequía. El mal funcionamiento del drenaje pluvial puede deteriorar las estructuras viales e impiden la adecuada movilidad de vehículos y transeúntes a causa de las inundaciones en el sector. La ciudad de Cúcuta solo tiene alcantarillado sanitario, ocasionando que el manejo de las aguas pluviales sea deficiente. Esto se relaciona con que, en varios sectores de la ciudad, ocurran estancamientos y se sature la infraestructura sanitaria convirtiéndose en un problema al momento de presentarse precipitaciones. En este sentido, el objetivo de este trabajo es resolver al problema de estancamiento de aguas pluviales en la intersección entre la Avenida 12E y la Calle 2N, Cúcuta, Colombia, a través de Sistemas Urbanos de Drenaje Sostenibles. Por lo tanto, se desarrolló una propuesta para el transporte e infiltración de las aguas pluviales a través de la aplicación de ecuaciones matemáticas la Resolución colombiana 0330 del 2017. Además, se realizó una ambientación 3D para visualizar la mejora paisajística con la implementación del drenaje sostenible. El caudal de diseño calculado para el drenaje pluvial fue de 8.48 m3/s, por lo cual, se optó por dividir el sistema en dos partes para optimizar el diseño. A partir de los parámetros de diseño, se estableció un sistema con 9 rejillas, 2 sistemas de tuberías, 7 pozos de inspección y 2 desarenadores. La propuesta de los Sistemas Urbanos de Drenaje Sostenibles en el sector de estudio, es una alternativa de construcciones sostenibles, que permiten una reducción de los impactos negativos sobre el ambiente y el uso eficiente de los recursos hídricos.

Objective: To evaluate acute changes in arterial distensibility and central pressure by high-intensity interval physical exercise (HIIPE) compared to moderate intensity continuous physical exercise (MICPE) sessions in subjects with normal and high-normal blood pressure (BP). Design and method: A randomized two-period crossover trial with 29 subjects (48±7years, 76%female, BMI=28.3±4.3kg/m2) divided into two groups according to Normal BP (120-129 and/or 80-84 mmHg) or HighNormal BP (130-139 and 85-89 mmHg) levels. They underwent either MICPE-HIIPE or HIIPE-MICPE sequences. Exercise intensity was defined according to the cardiopulmonary exercise test. The measures included aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) and applanation tonometry (Sphygmocor®) changes at baseline, immediately, and 24 hours after each physical exercise session. Results: In HighNormal BP group, PWV was significantly lower 24h after MICPE compared to baseline (7.49 ±0.95 vs 8.20± 0.64 m/s; p=0.022). Aortic SBP was significantly lower immediately after HIIPE than baseline and 24h after MICPE (113 ± 8; 124±9 and 121±9; p < 0.05). Comparison between groups, aortic SBP was higher in HighNormal BP at baseline and immediately after MICPE compared to Normal BP (124 ±9 and 122 ±17 vs 114± 9 and 110 ±8; respectively p=0.012). Conclusions: In subjects with normal and high-normal BP, vascular distensibility response to exercise is more dependent on basal levels of stiffness and more sensitive to the stimulus of MICPE; however, changes in aortic BP are more dependent on basal BP levels and more sensitive to high-intensity stimuli.

Euphorbia cuneata Vahl. (Euphorbiaceae) is a plant used in folk medicine for the treatment of pain and inflammation, although the biological basis for these effects has not been thoroughly investigated. The goal of this study was to investigate the pharmacological properties and characterization of phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the aerial parts of E. cuneata. E. cuneata aerial parts were tested for antioxidant activity (DPPH), antibacterial activity, cell viability and cytotoxic effects, and anti-inflammatory activity. Phenolic and flavonoid contents (HPLC), and volatile constituents (GC-MS) were also characterized. The methanol extract had the highest antioxidant activity, while the ether extract had the lowest. The antioxidant activity of E. cuneata extract increased from (21.11%) at a concentration of 10 µg/mL to (95.53%) at a concentration of 1280 µg/mL. S. aureus was the most sensitive organism with the highest zone of inhibition and lowest MIC, with acetone extract; whereas C. tropicalis was the most resistant, with the lowest inhibition zone. MTT assay revealed that the methanol extract of E. cuneata had significant cytotoxic effects on the A549, Caco-2, and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, respectively. Lower concentrations of methanolic extract gave anti-inflammatory activity, and those effects were compared with indomethacin as a positive control. Pyrogallol was the most abundant phenolic acid, followed by caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, syringic, and gallic acids, respectively. The 7-hydroxyflavone and rutin flavonoids were also found in the extract. GC-mass analysis showed that aerial parts of E. cuneata were rich in methyl 12-hydroxy-9-octadecenoate. The volatile components were also composed of considerable amounts of hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester, (9E,12E)-octadeca-9,12-dienoyl chloride, and methyl octadeca-9,12-dienoate as well as a little amount of hexanal dimethyl acetal. It can be concluded that methanolic extract of E. cuneata could be used as an available source of natural bioactive constituents with consequent health benefits.

On the example of dihydrolapachol it is shown that the oxidative dimerization of 2-hydroxy-3-alkylnaphthoquinones upon treatment with lead tetraacetate or cerium ammonium nitrate in aprotic media leads to the formation of diastereomeric 5a S*,6a S*,12a S*,12b S*- and 5a S*,6a R*,12a R*,12b S*-dihydrobinaphthofurantetraones (1:1). This result is significantly different from the previous one.

Abstract Residues 120-131 within the hepatitis B core Ag (HBcAg) represent a dominant T cell recognition site for mice of the H-2S haplotype. This study was undertaken in order to identify residues within the p120-131 sequence which either interact with the TCR termed epitopic residues or interact with MHC class II molecules termed agretopic residues. For this purpose a panel of analogs of p120-131 composed of peptides containing single alanine substitutions for each residue was synthesized. These peptides were analyzed functionally for their ability to stimulate p120-131 or HBcAg-primed T cells and for their immunogenicity in B10.S or [B10.S X B10 (nonresponder)]F1 mice. Furthermore, analogs of p120-131 were used as stimulators and inhibitors of T cell activation in competitive inhibition experiments. Cumulatively these functional studies allowed us to identify residue 125 as a dominant epitopic residue and residues 127 and 129 as dominant agretopic residues. Furthermore, a p120-131 analog containing an alanine substitution for the dominant agretopic residue was immunogenic in B10.S mice, but was nonimmunogenic in (B10.S X B10)F1 mice indicating that T cell responsiveness is influenced by MHC class II gene dosage effects and can be inherited in an apparent recessive manner. In this study, critical residues involved in the immunogenicity of this dominant T cell determinant of HBcAg were defined, in a companion study, the influence of these residues on tolerogenicity was examined.

Background. The current epidemiology of pneumococcal meningitis in Ukraine, Georgia and countries of CIS is poorly studied. In order to ensure an effective vaccination strategy and post-vaccination surveillance, we examined the serotype distribution patterns of pneumococcal meningitis in the following regions: European (Ukraine, Belarus), Transcaucasian (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia), and Asian (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan). The study was performed within the program for Invasive Bacterial Diseases Sentinel Surveillance implemented in the region by WHO Regional Office for Europe. Methods. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSFs) samples were collected from patients with suspected meningitis at sentinel hospitals throughout all the regions within the period 2007 - 2016. Determination of S. pneumoniae and serogroups/serotypes in positive CSFs was performed using qPCR and mPCR. In total 3013 CSFs were tested: 2764 (91.7%) of them were collected from patients aged under 5 years, 128 (4.2%) from children aged 5 - 18 years and 121 (4.1%) from adults. Results. 6% (188) of CSFs analyzed were positive for S. pneumoniae, The PCR assay used could predict the S. pneumoniae serotypes/ serogroups for 82% (n = 154) of positive CSFs, 16% were not-typeable in our PCR scheme and for 2% serotyping was not performed. In total, 26 different serotypes/serogroups were identified. Serotypes 6A/B (21%), 14 (15%), 19F (10%), 23F (7%), 18 (A/B/C) (4%), 9V/9A (3%) and 4 (3%) were found to be the most prevalent, followed by others with a prevalence of 2% and less(6C/6D, 24(A/B/F), 19A, 5, 3,1,23A,20,2,13,31, 8, 7F/7A, 7C/7B/40, 22F/22A, 21, 15B/15C, 12F/12A/12B/44/46, 11A/11D). Conclusions. The proportion of vaccine serotypes in pneumococcal meningitis cases (vaccine coverage) amounts to 67% for PCV10 and 71% for PCV13 in all the regions, suggesting that the introduction of conjugate vaccines (PCV10 and 13) into National Immunization Programs is feasible. Post-vaccine introduction surveillance supported will be essential. Post-vaccine introduction surveillance and monitoring of changes in serotype S. pneumoniae distribution in cases with invasive pneumococcal disease and in healthy carriers is essential to assess the vaccination effectiveness and to provide a comprehensive picture of the vaccination impact on pneumococcal serotype distribution in the region.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are free-living soil-borne bacteria that colonize the rhizosphere and have great importance in governing the functional property of terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, rhizospheric bacteria were isolated from maize and wheat and screened for their plant growth promoting activities. These isolates were identified as Pseudomonas , Bacillus , Azospirillum and Azotobacter species. All isolates were tested for their indole acetic acid (IAA) production ability. All isolates produce the varying amount s o f IAA ranging from 0.6- 2.7 μg/ml. The highest concentration of IAA was produced by bacterial strain Bacillus subtilis AK31. A series of growth pouch and pot experiments were conducted to study the effect of bacterial inoculants on the growth of maize and wheat. It was concluded that IAA plays a key role i n the growth promotion of roots in maize and wheat in growth pouch study. In maize, isolate AK1, AK21, AK31 and AK8 showed high indole acetic acid (6.86, 7.11, 7.11 and 7.36 pmol/ml, respectively) and root elongation activity ( 4.10, 5.00, 5.00 and 3.80 cm, respectively) after 96h of growth. In wheat, bacterial strains AK31, AK2, AK14, AK32 and AK15 showed high IAA ( 6.59, 5.66, 5.35, 7.53 and 5.66 pmol/ml, respectively) and root elongation ( 6.07, 4.00, 5.20, 6.90 and 5.20 cm, respectively) activity after 96h of growth. In pot experiments, Bacillus sp. AK21, Bacillus subtilis AK31, Azotobacter diazotrophicus AK14, Microbacterium sp. AK19 and Pseudomonas fluorescens AK32 showed effective results in term s of increase in root and shoot dry weight in maize (123, 130, 121, 120, 124g and 116, 126, 116, 114, 120g/pot, respectively) and wheat (130, 135, 125, 118, 140g and 105, 106, 110, 102, 110g/pot, respectively), in comparison to controls of maize and wheat crops. Thus, it might be concluded that PGPR strains AK21, AK31, AK14, AK19 and AK32 could be used as crop- enhancer and bio- fertilizer for production of maize and wheat .

The experiment was carried out aiming to analyze the dry mass production and distribution and the content and accumulation of macronutrients in sourgrass (Digitaria insularis) plants cultivated under mineral nutrition standard conditions. Plants grew in 7-liter pots filled with sand substrate and daily irrigated with nutrient solution, being maintained under greenhouse conditions. Treatments consisted of times of evaluation (21, 35, 49, 63, 77, 91, 105, 119, and 133 days after emergence - DAE) and were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replicates. Sourgrass showed small accumulation of dry mass (0.3 g per plant) and macronutrients (3.7 mg of N per plant, 0.4 mg of P per plant, 5.6 mg of K per plant, 0.9 mg of Ca per plant, 0.7 mg of Mg per plant, and 0.3 mg of S per plant) at vegetative growth stage (< 49 DAE). Those accumulations increased mainly after 77 DAE, reaching the maximum theoretical value at 143, 135, 141, 129, 125, 120, and 128 DAE, for dry mass (12.4 g per plant), N (163.2 mg per plant), P (27.1 mg per plant), K (260.5 mg per plant), Ca (47.6 mg per plant), Mg (30.9 mg per plant), and S (13.7 mg per plant), respectively. K and N were found with higher rates and, as a consequence, they were required and accumulated in greater amounts in plant tissues of sourgrass.

Background Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte abnormality in hospitalized patients and given its impact on mortality and morbidity, a relevant medical condition. Nevertheless, little is known about factors influencing long-term outcome. Methods This is a prospective observational 12-month follow-up study of patients with profound hyponatremia (≤125 mmol/L) admitted to the emergency department of two tertiary care centers between 2011 and 2013. We analyzed the predictive value of clinical and laboratory parameters regarding the following outcomes: 1-year mortality, rehospitalization and recurrent profound hyponatremia. Results Median (IQR) initial serum sodium (s-sodium) level of 281 included patients was 120 mmol/L (116–123). During the follow-up period, 58 (20.6%) patients died. The majority (56.2%) were rehospitalized at least once. Recurrent hyponatremia was observed in 42.7%, being profound in 16%. Underlying comorbidities, assessed by the Charlson Comorbidity Index, predicted 1-year mortality (odds ratio (OR) 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25–1.64, P < 0.001). Furthermore, ‘s-sodium level at admission’ (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.01–1.29, P = 0.036) and ‘correction of hyponatremia’ defined as s-sodium ≥135 mmol/L at discharge were associated with mortality (OR 0.47, 95% CI 0.23–0.94, P = 0.034). Mortality rate fell with decreasing baseline s-sodium levels and was lower in the hyponatremia category ≤120 mmol/L vs >120 mmol/L (14.8% and 27.8%, P < 0.01). Patients with s-sodium level ≤120 mmol/L were more likely to have drug-induced hyponatremia, whereas hypervolemic hyponatremia was more common in patients with s-sodium >120 mmol/L. Conclusion Hyponatremia is associated with a substantial 1-year mortality, recurrence and rehospitalization rate. The positive correlation of s-sodium and mortality emphasizes the importance of the underlying disease, which determines the outcome besides hyponatremia itself.

The influence of macromolecular architecture on shear-induced crystallization of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) was studied. To this aim, three star PLLAs, 6-arm with Mw of 120 and 245 kg/mol, 4-arm with Mw of 123 kg/mol, and three linear PLLAs with Mw of 121, 240 and 339 kg/mol, were synthesized and examined. The PLLAs were sheared at 170 and 150 °C, at 5/s, 10/s and 20/s for 20 s, 10 s and 5 s, respectively, and then cooled at 10 or 30 °C/min. Shear-induced crystallization during cooling was followed by a light depolarization method, whereas the crystallized specimens were examined by DSC, 2D-WAXS, 2D-SAXS and SEM. The effect of shear depended on the shearing conditions, cooling rate and polymer molar mass but it was also affected by the macromolecular architecture. The shear-induced crystallization of linear PLLA with Mw of 240 kg/mol was more intense than that of the 6-arm polymer with similar Mw, most possibly due to its higher Mz. However, the influence of shear on the crystallization of the star polymers with Mw close to 120 kg/mol was stronger than on that of their linear analog. This was reflected in higher crystallization temperature, as well as crystallinity achieved during cooling.

Abstract Background: Active travel has a potential to increase children’s physical activity (PA). Pedometers offer a valid option to measure PA, but do not capture cycling activity. Children’s self-reported cycling distances can be analyzed by the Geografic Information System (GIS). Aim: To combine pedometry and GIS mapping to identify the relative amount of cycling in children’s PA. Study group: Of all children in 4th grade (n=187) in Staffanstorp Sweden, 144 had valid pedometer data. Fifty-six children were non-cyclists while 88 children (32 boys, 47 girls, 9 gender unknown) reported at least one cycle journey. Methods: Cycle trips were entered into GIS and calculated to total cycling distance. Average length of the single distances cycled per day was 676 m (SD=534 m). A previously reported cycling speed (13.5 km/h) was used to calculate time spent cycling. Consequently distance=676 m, speed=13.5 km/h=13,500 m/3600 s=3.75 m/s and time=676m/3.75m/s=180.26 s=3 min. Expenditure of 4 and 5 metabolic equivalents (METs) has in children been reported equivalent to 122 and 127 steps/min, respectively. We estimated 4.7 METs (13.5 km/h) as 126 steps for every min of cycling (127–122=5×0.7=125.5). Results: The daily mean cycle distance was 676 m, on average 379 additional steps/day for cycling children (min. 21, max. 1385, SD=299) with no gender difference. Additional “steps” obtained by cycling corresponded to on average 3% of their PA. Conclusion: The relative contribution of cycling in 10-year-old children’s PA level is quite small and stable between children across different levels of activity levels, regardless of gender.
