Purpose:The aim of the study was to determine the effect of supramaximal exercise intensity during constant work-rate cycling to exhaustion on the accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) and to determine the test–retest reliability of AOD.Methods:Twenty-one trained male cyclists and triathletes (mean ± SD for age and maximal oxygen uptake [V̇O2max] were 41 ± 7 y and 4.53 ± 0.54 L/min, respectively) performed initial tests to determine the linear relationship between V̇O2 and power output, and V̇O2max. In subsequent trials, AOD was determined from exhaustive square-wave cycling trials at 105%, 112.5% (in duplicate), 120%, and 127.5% V̇O2max.Results:Exercise intensity had an effect (P = .011) on the AOD (3.84 ± 1.11, 4.23 ± 0.96, 4.09 ± 0.87, and 3.93 ± 0.89 L at 105%, 112.5%, 120%, and 127.5% V̇O2max, respectively). Specifically, AOD at 112.5% V̇O2max was greater than at 105% V̇O2max (P = .033) and at 127.5% V̇O2max (P = .022), but there were no differences between the AOD at 112.5% and 120% V̇O2max. In 76% of the participants, the maximal AOD occurred at 112.5% or 120% V̇O2max. The reliability statistics of the AOD at 112.5% V̇O2max, determined as intraclass correlation coefficient and coefficient of variation, were .927 and 8.72%, respectively.Conclusions:The AOD, determined from square-wave cycling bouts to exhaustion, peaks at intensities of 112.5–120% V̇O2max. Moreover, the AOD at 112.5% V̇O2max exhibits an 8.72% test–retest reliability.

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of three different mixtures of some N2-fixing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth, yield, element content and nitrate accumulation as well as the effect on the reduction of nitrogen fertilization of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The measurements were made in two separate experiments in 2015 between 6 June – 5 August (Experiment 1) and 2 July – 3 September (Experiment 2) under the field conditions. Butterhead form and heat tolerant summer cultivar ‘Luna’ was used as a plant material. Agrobacterium rubi RK-34, Pantoea agglomerans RK-79 and RK-92, Pseudomonas putida RK-142 and TV-42A, Bacillus megaterium TV-6D, TV-60D and TV-91C, Pseudomonas flourescens TV-11D and Paenibacillus polymyxa TV-12E were used as N2-fixing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria. The treatments were 150 kg N/ha (available dose of AS) as ammonium sulphate (AS) [(NH4)2SO4), (21% N)] and three different mixtures of PGPR. Further, combined uses of decreasing doses of AS (50%, 75 kg ha–1AS and 75%, 112.5 kg ha–1 AS) and PGPR mixtures (M) such as M-1 + 75 AS, M-1 + 112.5 AS, M-2 + 75 AS, M-2 + 112.5 AS, M-3 + 75 AS and M-3 + 112.5 AS were used as additional treatments. All treatments increased the yield and the growth of lettuce according to the control. While inoculation with PGPR mixtures decreased the accumulation of heavy metals such as Cd, Ni, and Pb in lettuce, increased nutrient uptake of lettuce. It was determined that the nitrate accumulation of lettuce (cv. ‘Luna’) in PGPR mixtures were lower than the available dose of AS but higher than control. The yield in M-3 + 112.5 AS (48431 kg ha–1) was similar and in the same statistical group with the available dose of AS (48225 kg ha–1) in both experiments. Furthermore, according to the results of cost analyses, using 25% less of AS (112.5 kg ha–1) with M-3 will supply the same income instead of using AS (150 kg ha–1). It can be clearly said that the mixtures with some N2-fixing plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), especially M-3 (P. putida RK-142 + P. flourescens TV-11D + B. megaterium TV-91C), have a great potential to decrease the nitrogen use (25%) for environmentally friendly crop production of lettuce.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2007-08 to study the response of Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) to different levels of seed rate (25, 31.25 and 37.5 kg/ha) and nitrogen ((37.5, 75, 112.5 and 150 kg/ha) grown in association with five year old Poplar spaced at 5x4 m. The height and dbh of Poplar was 17.58 m and 18.27 cm respectively. The Coriander crop intercropped with Poplar responded positively to higher seed rate and nitrogen levels than recommended to sole crop. Increasing levels of nitrogen from 37.5 to 112.5 kg/ha and seed rate from 25 to 31.25 kg/ha increased all growth and yield attributes and recorded significantly more seed and straw yields. The interaction between seed rate and nitrogen was significant for plant height, umbels per plant, 1000 seed weight, straw and seed yield. The combination of 31.25 kg/ha seed rate and 112.5 kg/ha N gave highest seed yield of 5.83 q/ha which was 33.3% more than that obtained with recommended seed rate (25 kg/ha) and nitrogen level (75 kg/ha).

Manure is a fertilizer derived from animal manure, which can improve the structure of peat soil and provide nutrients for lettuce plants (Lactuca sativa L.). Peat soil is a type of soil that has many obstacles in cultivation including acidic pH, low nutrient availability such as N, P, and K. Manure can be used in solid and liquid forms. This study aims to determine the dosage and the appropriate way of giving chicken manure to the yield of lettuce and the nature of the soil after being given chicken manure. This research has been carried out from April to June 2018 on experimental land, Agronomy Laboratory. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 7 treatments namely without fertilizer application (control), 37.5 g solid fertilizer of chicken manure, 75 g solid fertilizer of chicken manure, 112.5 g solid fertilizer of chicken manure, 37.5 g of solid fertilizer thawed chicken manure,75 g of solid fertilizer thawed chicken manure, 112.5 g of solid fertilizer thawed chicken manure. The results showed that 112.5 g solid manure from chicken manure was the appropriate dose to increase the growth of lettuce plants, namely plant height (15.48 cm), leaf width (11.60 cm), number of leaves (11.00 strands), weight plant (37.83 g), weight root plant (3.48 g), and increasing the total N content of the soil (0.40%).

This study aimed to determine: (1) the combination of the effect of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) concentration and nitrogen fertilizer dose on the growth and yield of cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) cultivar Dewata F1 (2) the effect of LOF concentration and nitrogen fertilizer dose which gave the best influence on growth and the results of cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) cultivar Dewata F1 (3) correlation between growth components and yield of cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) cultivar Dewata F1. The study was conducted in Nanggerang Village, Jalaksana District, Kuningan-West Java Regency, from July to October 2018. The method used in this research was the experimental method. The experimental design used was Randomized Block Design (RBD). This experiment consisted of 12 combinations of liquid organic fertilizer concentration and nitrogen fertilizer dosage, each of which was repeated three times, so that there were 36 experimental plots. The combination of treatments tested in the field are: A = LOF 0%, N = 67.5 kg / ha (150 kg Urea), B = LOF 0%, N = 90.0 kg / ha (200 kg Urea), C = LOF 0%, N = 112.5 kg / ha (250 kg Urea), D = LOF 15%, N = 67.5 kg / ha (150 kg Urea), E = LOF 15%, N = 90.0 kg / ha (200 kg Urea), F = LOF 15%, N = 112.5 kg / ha (250 kg Urea), G = LOF 20%, N = 67.5 kg / ha (150 kg Urea), H = LOF 20%, N = 90.0 kg / ha (200 kg Urea), I = LOF 20%, N = 112.5 kg / ha (250 kg Urea), J = LOF 25%, N = 67.5 kg / ha (150 kg Urea), K = LOF 25%, N = 90.0 kg / ha (200 kg Urea), L = LOF 25%, N = 112.5 kg / ha (250 kg Urea). The results showed that combination of liquid organic fertilizer concentration and dose of nitrogen fertilizer did not affect to all observed variables except for stem diameter at 21 DAP. There was correlation between the components of growth and the fruit weight of the crop.

The first (A, 106.19–110.3) is an interpretation of the Aristotelian theory of intellect, and especially of the active intellect referred to in Aristotle, De anima 3.5, which differs from the interpretation in Alexander's own De anima, and whose relation to Alexander's De anima, attribution to Alexander, and date are all disputed. The second (B, 110.4–112.5) is an account of the intellect which is broadly similar to A though differing on certain points. The third (Cl, 112.5–113.12) is an account of someone's response to the problem of how intellect can enter the human being ‘from outside’ if it is incorporeal and hence cannot move at all; in the fourth (C2, 113.12–24) the writer who reported Cl criticizes that solution and gives his own alternative one.

The effects of the dimethylamine salt of dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid) and the dimethylamine salt of 2,4-D [(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid] on fieldbeans (Phaseolus vulgarisL. ‘Great Northern Valley’) were studied in order to assess the potential hazards of using these herbicides in areas adjoining fieldbean production. Dicamba and 2,4-D were applied to fieldbeans at three different rates (1.1, 11.2, and 112.5 g ai/ha) and four different growth stages (preemergence, second trifoliolate leaf, early bloom, and early pod). Application of 2,4-D preemergence or in the second trifoliolate leaf stage of growth did not reduce seed yield, delay maturity, or reduce germination of seed obtained from treated plants. Dicamba or 2,4-D applied at 112.5 g/ha to fieldbeans in the early bloom or early pod stages of growth consistently reduced seed yield, delayed maturity, and reduced germination percentage. Fieldbeans exhibited a greater overall sensitivity to dicamba than to 2,4-D.

Background Vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam are common empiric antibiotics in hospitalized pediatric patients. Studies evaluating intravenous (IV) compatibility at various concentrations show inconsistent results. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the Y-site compatibility of vancomycin 10 mg/mL and piperacillin/tazobactam 112.5 mg/mL. Methods Vancomycin (10 g vial) was reconstituted using sterile water for injection (SWFI) and diluted with 5% dextrose in water (D5W) to a final concentration of 10 mg/mL in an evacuated IV bag. Piperacillin/tazobactam (40.5 g vial) was reconstituted and diluted with SWFI to a final concentration of 112.5 mg/mL (100 mg/mL piperacillin) in an evacuated IV bag. Both antibacterial stock solutions were then stored in a refrigerator at 4°C (39.2°F). Initial solution appearances, including color, clarity, and particulates, were documented. Diluted solutions were mixed in a quantity of 3 mL of each vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam in glass test tubes. Subsequent evaluation included pH assessment and visual evaluation with unaided eye, magnifying glass, high-beam light, and via Spec-20 turbidimeter. Solution mixtures were evaluated upon mixing and again at 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 4 hours after mixing. Results Initial combination of vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam resulted in a milky precipitate, visible to the unaided eye, which dissipated 15 seconds after mixing. No precipitate was visualized via any method at any additional time point. Turbidimetry and pH readings did not demonstrate differences from baseline measurements. Conclusions A combination of vancomycin 10 mg/mL and piperacillin/tazobactam 112.5 mg/mL demonstrated precipitation immediately upon mixing. Co-infusion of vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam via Y-site should be considered incompatible.

Field experiment was conducted in Chora District of south western Ethiopia, to evaluate the effect of different rates of coffee husk compost (CHC) and 18.9N + 37.7P + 6.94S + 0.15B (NPSB) in the form of NH4, P2O5, SO4−, and B2O5, repectively, blended fertilizer on selected soil chemical properties of potato field during 2021. The treatment consisted of four rates of CHC (0, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 t ha−1) and four rates of blended NPSB fertilizer (0, 112.5, 150, and 187.5 kg ha−1). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Postharvest soil data were collected and subjected to ANOVA using SAS version 9.4. All the soil parameters analyzed were significantly ( P < 0.05 ) affected by the main factors of CHC and NPSB blended fertilizer except exchangeable K+ and Na+ which were affected by main factors but not by factors interaction. The maximum pH (5.3), OC (6.0%), and CEC (14.10 meq 100g−1) were obtained from application of sole 7.5.t CHC ha−1 which is at par with combined 7.5.t CHC and 112.5 kg NPSB ha−1, while the maximum TN (26%), Av. P (3.57%), and Av. S (4.36%) were obtained from combined application of 7.5.t CHC and 112.5 kg NPSB ha−1. The sole application of either of 150 kg or 187.5 kg NPSB ha−1 was resulted in high exchangeable acidity. Therefore, combined application of CHC and NPSB fertilizers raised the pH, improves the OC%, total N, available P and S, reduced the exchangeable acidity, and raises the CEC and exchangeable bases of potato field soil as compared to the control and sole NPSB fertilizer.

This experiment was conducted in a Greenhouse of Soil Science Department from March to May 2021. Soil properties analysis was carried out at the Laboratory of Chemistry, Biology and Soil Fertility of Soil Science Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. This experiment aims to study the effect of ecoenzym and SP-36 application on pH and P availability and growth of Mustard planted on Ultisol. This experiment was designed using the Completely Randomized Design consisting of 8 treatments which were B0: Control, B1: 10 ml L-1 ecoenzyme (EE), B2: 5 ton ha-1 of EE solid waste, B3: 50% recommended dose of 56.25 kg SP-36 ha-1, B4: 100% recommended dose of 112.5 kg SP-36 ha-1, B5: 10 ml L-1 EE + 5 ton ha-1 EE solid waste, B6: 50% recommended dose of 56.25 kg SP-36 ha-1 + 10 ml L-1 EE + 5 ton ha-1 EE solid waste, B7: 100% recommended dose of 112.5 kg SP-36 ha-1 + 10 ml L-1 EE + 5 ton ha-1 of EE solid waste. The treatment was replicated 3 times thus the total of experiment were 24 units. Variables observed were soil pH and P availability, growth and yield of Mustard. The results showed that the treatments of ecoenzyme and ecoenzyme solid waste and SP-36 fertilizer had significant effects on the soil pH, P-Availability, plant height, leaves number, root length, wet and dry weight of mustard. The B4 treatment with SP-36 treatment dose of 112.5 kg ha-1 resulted the best effect on soil pH and soil P-Availability, growth and yield of mustard

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a critical complication of diabetes mellitus (DM) affecting life quality and significantly impacting healthcare resources. OBJECTIVE: Determine the direct medical costs associated with treating DFU in King Fahad Hospital of the University and identify factors that could assist in developing resource management guidelines in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: SETTING: King Fahad Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included diabetic patients admitted with foot ulcerations between 2007 and 2017 inclusive. We determined management costs including drug usage, wound dressings, surgical procedures, admissions, and basic investigation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Factors affecting the direct perspective medical costs of managing DFU. SAMPLE SIZE: 99 patients. RESULTS: The overall cost of managing 99 patients with DFU was 6 618 043.3 SAR ($1 764 632.68 USD), which further translates to approximately 6684.9 SAR per patient/year ($1782.6 USD). The highest cost incurred was for admission expenditure (45.6%), followed by debridement (14.5%) and intensive care unit (ICU) admission (10.4%). CONCLUSION: The overall healthcare expenditure in treating DFU is high, with hospital admissions and surgical procedures adding a significant increase to the total cost. Focused patient education on overall glycemic control and prevention of DFU may decrease complications and hence, the overall cost. LIMITATIONS: Identified only the direct medical costs of DFU as the indirect costs were subjective and more difficult to quantify. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None.

Eleven field trials were conducted over a 3 yr period (2010–2012) in Ontario to determine the biologically effective dose of glyphosate applied postemergence (POST) in corn at doses of 112.5–1350 g acid equivalent (a.e.) ha−1 for the control of various grass and broadleaved weed species when the weeds were 10, 20 or 30 cm in height. The GR90 for redroot pigweed, common ragweed, common lamb’s-quarters, barnyardgrass, and green foxtail were 353, 630, 621, 763, and <112.5 g a.e. ha−1 when applied at 10 cm weed height, 235, 201, 906, 868, and 296 g a.e. ha−1 when applied at 20 cm weed height, and 792, >1350, >1350, 912, and 675 g a.e. ha−1 when applied at 30 cm weed height, respectively. Corn yields were maximized when glyphosate was applied to weeds that were up to 10 cm in height, but was reduced with later glyphosate application timings. The results of this study reinforce the importance of early POST weed control in corn.

Mung bean need phosphate in seed formation and accelerate pod maturity. In acidic soil the P element is difficult to be available because it is bound by metal metals in the soil, it is given a palm bunch ash containing a lot of organic nutrients to release P from the metal and also increase soil pH. The study aims to determine the effect of P fertilization and palm bunch ash on the growth and production of mung bean. The study was conducted on community land in Medan Selayang from October to December 2019. The study used a factorial randomized block design, with 2 factors. The first factor is P fertilizer (0; 37.5; 112.5 kg SP-36/ha). The second factor is oil palm bunch ash consisting of 0; 2; 4 t/ha. The variables observed were a number of pods, weight of 100 seeds, weight of seed per plots, weight of seed per plant. The results showed that the application of P the applications of P fertilizer 112.5 kg SP-36/ha tended to produce the highest pod number and seed weight per plot. The applications of oil palm bunch ash 2 t/ha significantly increased seed weight per plant, seed weight per plot and pod number.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of mulch (non-mulch and straw mulch) and different levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1) and potassium (0, 37.5, 75 and 112.5 kg ha-1) on the growth and yield of onion. Plants grown with straw mulch gave higher bulb yield (10.89 t ha-1) which showed 13.79% increase over non-mulch. Nitrogen increased the bulb yield significantly.The highest nitrogen level gave the highest bulb yield (12.13 t ha-1), which was 41.54% increase over control. Potassium increased bulb yield compared to control, but its different levels had identical results on yield. Nitrogen and mulch together produced significant variations. The Nitrogen at the highest level (120 kg ha-1) along with straw mulch gave the highest yield (13.31 t ha-1). Potassium together with mulch also exhibited significant variation on yield and yield components. Plants grown with the highest level of potassium (112.5 kg ha-1) along with straw mulch gave the highest bulb yield (11.58 t ha-1). Nitrogen and potassium as 120 kg N ha-1 × 75.0 kg K ha-1 gave the highest bulb yield (13.07 t ha-1). In this study, PCNs were synthesized using Li impregnated montmorillonite (Li-MMT) in PAN matrix to promote single-ion conduction. Ion exchange resulted to 4782.5 ± 112.5 ppm Li+ ions impregnated to MMT. Then, Li-MMT was incorporated to PAN via solution intercalation method. The investigation on the structure of PAN/Li-MMT nanocomposites showed that PAN was partially intercalated with Li-MMT. Moreover, electrical conductivity measurements showed that the conductivity for PCN with 15wt% Li-MMT was 3.58x10-8 S/cm.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the main staple foods worldwide. Wide precise sowing (Wps) is a sowing method believed to produce the highest winter wheat grain yields; however, the reasons for its high yields and its effect on quality traits have not been effectively studied. Hence, a two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of three sowing methods, dibbling (Db), drilling (Dr), and Wps and seed rates (112.5 kg ha−1, 150 kg ha−1, 187.5 kg ha−1, and 225 kg ha−1) on grain yield and the quality of winter wheat. Wps, Dr, and Db produced statistically similar results in terms of the grain yield and most of the quality traits measured. The grain yield increased significantly with the increasing rate, the highest being 7488.89 kg ha−1 at a seed rate of 225 kg ha−1. The total protein, albumin, and globulin were not affected by the sowing methods, but prolamin and glutelin were affected by the Dr and Wps, respectively. The total starch in both years, and the amylose and amylopectin in the first year, were affected only by the seed rates, with 60.11%, 23.2%, 38.63%, or higher values. The results indicated that for the wheat yield and quality traits, Wps, Dr and Db can mostly be used interchangeably. For the protein, starch, and grain yield, the suitable seed rates were 112.5 kg ha−1, 150 kg ha−1, and 225 kg ha−1, respectively.

Background: Our aim was to determine the usefulness of hepatic transaminases as hematological markers to predict the presence and severity of liver injury in adult patients with abdominal trauma.Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients admitted with abdominal trauma (blunt and penetrating) over a three-year period. Grading of liver injury was based on CT-scan or surgical findings. Patients in whom liver enzymes were estimated in the first 48 hours were included.Results: Out of the 66 patients in the study, 23 (63.89%) patients had minor liver injuries, while 13 (36.11%) had major liver injuries. Injury was blunt in 63 (95.45%) and penetrating in 3 (4.54%) patients. The mortality rate was 7.57% (n=5). The median SGOT and SGPT levels in the liver injury group were higher than those in the non-liver injury group SGOT (209LI vs. 43.5) U/L and SGPT (283.22 vs. 72.97) U/L, respectively, (p=0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve assessment, showed the optimum SGOT and SGPT thresholds to be >112.5 and >120.5U/L respectively, which were strongly associated with the presence of liver injuries. There was significant correlation between liver transaminases with grade of liver injury, SGOT (p=0.013) and SGPT (p=0.004).Conclusions: SGOT and SGPT values >112.5 and >120.5U/L respectively, are strongly suggestive of liver injury. Hepatic transaminases are useful screening hematological markers for liver injuries and should be included in the initial trauma blood test panel and may guide in the decision making especially in medical centers with limited facilities.

In calcareous soil, the significant portion of applied phosphorus (P) fertilizers is adsorbed on the calcite surface and becomes unavailable to plants. Addition of organic amendments with chemical fertilizers can be helpful in releasing the absorbed nutrients from these surfaces. To check out this problem, a field experiment was conducted for two years to determine the effect of P fertilizers and humic acid (HA) in enhancing P availability in soil and their ultimate effect on growth, yield and P uptake of wheat in calcareous soils. The experiment was comprised of five levels of P (0, 45, 67.5, 90 and 112.5 kg P2O5 ha−1) as a single superphosphate (SSP) and 2 levels of locally produced humic acid (with and without HA) arranged in a two factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Wheat plant height, spike length, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, grain, straw and biological yield were significantly improved by the addition of HA with SSP. Very often, the performance of 67.5 kg P2O5 ha−1 with HA were either similar or better than 90 or even 112.5 kg P2O5 ha−1 applied without HA. Post-harvest soil organic matter, AB-DTPA extractable and water-soluble P, plant P concentration and its uptake were also significantly improved by the addition of HA with SSP compared to sole SSP application. It was evident that P efficiency could be increased with HA addition and it has the potential to improve crop yield and plants P uptake in calcareous soils.

Optimal nutrient management is critical for optimizing flowering, yield, quality and improving soil health. A key approach for making chrysanthemum crop cultivation profitable is balanced fertigation at the right time. This is possible by fertigation through drip. The present study was designed in 2019–2021 at a model floriculture center, Pantnagar, to investigate the response of split application of NPK through drip fertigation on flowering attributes, yield, biochemical activity and soil nutrient status of chrysanthemum. Plants received application of NPK with five treatment combinations: T1-NPK @ 100:150:100 kg/ha/year, T2-NPK @ 100:150:100 kg/ha/year, T3-NPK @ 100:150:100 kg/ha/year, T4-NPK @ 75:112.5:75 kg/ha/year and T5-NPK @ 75:112.5:75 kg/ha/year at vegetative, bud and flowering stages. The results reveal that the plants treated with treatment T3 (NPK @ 100:150:100 kg/ha/year) exhibited maximum increases in floral bud diameter (31.45%), number of inflorescences per branch (24.44%), diameter of inflorescence (15.32–28.44%), weight of inflorescence (24.30%), stem diameter, inflorescence stem length, number of inflorescences per plant (6.16%), number of inflorescences per hectare (53.46%), chlorophyll a content, chlorophyll b content, total chlorophyll content (40.20%), carotene content of inflorescence (69.56%), organic carbon (1.22-fold), available nitrogen content (7.46%), available phosphorus and available potassium (1.14-fold) compared to the control. Conclusively, the results suggest that split application of NPK through drip fertigation may improve the inflorescence attributes, yield, biochemical activity and soil nutrient status of chrysanthemum.

A Mg -substituted material with nominal composition Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 3 Mg 2 Cu 6 O x, prepared by partial substitution of Ca by isovalent Mg in the 2256 composition of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O , has been studied by the measurements of electrical resistance, magnetic susceptibility and X-ray diffraction pattern. Results show the existence of a superconducting phase with onset T c at 112.5±1 K along with a minor phase with onset T c =88 K . The material retained superconducting characteristics (Meissner effect and T c onset ) even after a period of six months.

Purpose Activation of clinical trials is a lengthy process. We studied the procedures and time required to activate lung cancer clinical trials in a US academic center compared with a European center. Methods A retrospective review was performed of all thoracic oncology therapeutic trials submitted for regulatory review between 2001 and 2008 at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM; St Louis, MO) and the University of Torino (UT; Torino, Italy). A process map was drafted by both institutions to establish the order of required events. Results We reviewed 137 therapeutic thoracic oncology trials from WUSM (n = 83) and UT (n = 54). The median times from submission to opening a trial were 163 days for WUSM and 112.5 days for UT (P = .048). The median times for regulatory approval were 75 days for WUSM and 31 days for UT (P < .001). The difference is more pronounced in a homogeneous subset of phase II, industrial-sponsored trials for the median calendar time from submission to opening a trial (239.5 days for WUSM v 112.5 days for UT; P < .001) and time for regulatory approval (99 days for WUSM v 13.5 days for UT; P < .001). The median number of patients accrued at WUSM was 7.4 patients per study compared with an average of 37 patients per study at UT. The proportion of trials that enrolled 20 patients or more represented 22.2% of trials at UT but only 1.1% of trials at WUSM. Conclusion It takes additional steps and significantly longer time to activate a therapeutic thoracic clinical trial at a representative US site (WUSM) compared with a European site (UT).

Purpose To assess the maximum-tolerated dosages (MTDs), and dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) of the epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor gefitinib and of intravenous (IV) irinotecan when administered together in children with refractory solid tumors. To assess the effect of gefitinib on the pharmacokinetics of IV irinotecan and on the bioavailability of a single oral dose of irinotecan. Patients and Methods IV irinotecan (15 or 20 mg/m2) was given daily for 5 days of 2 consecutive weeks. Oral gefitinib (150 or 112.5 mg/m2) was concomitantly given daily for 12 or 21 days. A single oral dose of irinotecan was given on day 9 of course 2 to allow pharmacokinetic analysis. Results The study enrolled 29 patients with recurrent solid tumors. The 21-day regimen of oral gefitinib with irinotecan was not tolerated. Diarrhea was the most common DLT. The MTD of the combination regimen was 15 mg/m2/d of IV irinotecan for 5 days of 2 consecutive weeks and 112.5 mg/m2/d of gefitinib given for 12 days. Gefitinib increased the bioavailability of oral irinotecan by four-fold over that observed in historical controls (median, 0.09 v 0.42; P < .000001), reducing the apparent clearance (an inverse measure of exposure) of irinotecan and SN-38 by 37% and 38%, respectively (P < .0001). A partial response was observed in a patient with refractory Ewing sarcoma. Conclusion IV irinotecan given with 12 days of oral gefitinib is well tolerated in children. We observed one partial response. Gefitinib significantly enhances the bioavailability of oral irinotecan. This combination warrants further investigation, particularly with orally administered irinotecan.

Heat shock proteins (HSP) are important components of the defense mechanism that increases the survival of body cells in adverse conditions due to antiapoptotic and cytoprotective effects. Since their discovery, numerous studies and experimental models have proved the role of HSPs as a key link in the processes of both repair and coagulation of proteins, as well as in the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The potential for pharmacological induction of HSPs in the human body makes them an attractive therapeutic target for many neurodegenerative diseases. This review examines the role of HSPs, especially fraction 70, in the mechanisms of neuroprotection of retinal ganglion cells in primary open-angle glaucoma being one of the common neurodegenerative diseases that can lead to complete loss of visual functions. A number of studies have shown the protective effect of HSP70 on retinal ganglion cells in animals with artificially induced glaucoma. But in the course of experiments on animal models, it was also proved that direct immunization with HSP through intravitreal injections induced pressure-independent degeneration of retinal ganglion cells. This indicates the need for indirect stimulation of HSP70 in order to activate their neuroprotective properties. To date, there are insufficient data on the circulation of HSP70 in the body of a person with glaucoma. These data indicate the prospects for further study of the role of HSP70 in glaucoma degeneration and elucidation of the ways of their mediated induction. Common clinical electromyography was performed to perfect treatment technique with biological feedback (BF) and to determine the mechanism of its action. Sixty eight patients at the age of 18 to 39 years with lower thoracic and lumbar spine and spinal cord injuries were examined at a period of a fullscale picture of spinal cord disease and a period of rehabilitation. The application of BF provided the average 60.2 % growth of muscular activity amplitude due to increase in total excitability of spinal alpha-motoneurons (10 %) (of mainly small (64.8 %) and reduction of excitability of big ones) and braking influence of the central nervous system (112.5 %).
