O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar as alterações no teor de carboidratos em estacas lenhosas de mirtileiro das cultivares Delite, Powder Blue e Seleção 19. O trabalho foi dividido em dois experimentos, primeiramente foram analisados os teores de amido e de açúcares solúveis a partir de ramos coletados em quatro épocas (03-06, 04-07, 24-07 e 11-08-2008) e, posteriormente, avaliou-se o teor de carboidratos em estacas coletadas nas mesmas épocas citadas, porém submetidas ao enraizamento e avaliadas em diferentes épocas (03-06, 04-07, 04-08, 03-09 e 03-10; 04-07, 04-08, 03-09, 03-10; 24-07, 04-08, 03-09 e 03-10; 11-08, 03-09 e 03-10). Verificou-se que a cultivar Powder Blue tem maior concentração de amido nos ramos que as cultivares Delite e Seleção 19. Estacas lenhosas de mirtileiro com baixos teores de amido, quando submetidas ao enraizamento, apresentam ressíntese de amido. No fim do período de inverno, ocorre aumento na concentração de amido nos ramos lenhosos de mirtileiro. Este aumento ao final do período de inverno está associado à maior taxa de enraizamento.

Antecedentes: El complejo de histocompatibilidad es un factor que influye en la patogénesis de las leucemias.Objetivos: se evaluó la presencia de alelos HLA clase II DRB1*, DQB1*, DPA1* y DPB1* en 47 pacientes con leucemia linfoide aguda (LLA) y 48 con leucemia mieloide crónica (LMC), para compararlos con 48 voluntarios sanos de Zulia, Venezuela, y determinar las posibles asociaciones de HLA con las leucemias.Métodos: Se utilizó la técnica de PCR-SSP de baja y alta resolución para las regiones HLA clase II DRB1*, DQB1*, DPA1* y DPB1* conforme las instrucciones del KIT Olerup SSP Genovision.Resultados: Los alelos HLA-DRB1*14, especialmente DRB1*14:21, -DPA1*1:06, -DPA1*01:03,-DPA1*02:01, y los haplotipos HLA-DPA1*01:03-DPB1*04:01, DPA1*01:03-DPB1*02:01, DPA1*01:03-DPB1*99:01, -DRB1*14-DPA1*01:03, -DRB1*15-DPA1*01:03 tuvieron asociación con LMC (RR > 3); los alelos HLA-DRB1*13, -DQB1*02, -DPA1*01:05, -DPA1*01:09 y los haplotipos HLA-DPA1*01:09-DPB1*02:01, DPA1*01:09-DPB1*04:01 resultaron protectores (RR < 1). Los alelos HLA-DQB1*04, -DQB1*05, -DPA1*1:06, -DPA1*01:07, -DPA1*1:08 tuvieron asociación positiva con LLA. Los alelos HLA-DPA1*01:09, -DPA1*02:01, -DPB1*02:01, -DPB1*03:01 y los haplotipos HLA-DPA1*01:03-DPB1*04:02, -DPA1*01:09-DPB1*02:01, -DPA1*01:09-DPB1*04:01, -DPA1*02:01-DPB1*04:02 resultaron asociados negativamente.Conclusiones: La ausencia de asociaciones con la región HLA-DRB1* en LLA y los otros patrones de asociación identificados sugieren marcadas diferencias en las patogénesis de las leucemias, lo que orienta hacia posibles deficiencias en la presentación antigénica para LLA o posibles efectos de mimetismo molecular en LMC.

Objective.Although HLA-DRB1 shared epitope (SE) alleles and HLA-DRB1*09:01 have repeatedly been shown to be associated with susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the effect of each allele on levels of anticyclic citrullinated peptide autoantibodies (anti-CCP) and interaction with cigarette smoking in RA remains to be fully defined. We investigated whether HLA-DRB1 risk alleles influence anti-CCP levels and whether each allele interacts with smoking in anti-CCP-positive or -negative RA.Methods.All patients with RA (n = 1924) and controls (n = 1119) were Korean. The HLA-DRB1 4-digit genotyping was performed by standard PCR-sequencing based typing method. OR and biologic interactions as departures from additivity or multiplicity were analyzed by logistic regression.Results.SE alleles were significantly associated with increased anti-CCP levels. Conversely, HLA-DRB1*09:01 was associated with reduced levels, in both SE-positive and SE-negative patients. Each of SE alleles interacted significantly with smoking, whereas HLA-DRB1*09:01 did not. Interactions between the 2 most significant risk alleles, HLA-DRB1*04:05 and HLA-DRB1*09:01, (attributable proportion = 0.68, 95% CI 0.46–0.89, multiplicity p = 0.012) significantly increased RA susceptibility regardless of anti-CCP and smoking status. Smoking increased the risk for RA by significant interaction with the heterozygote HLA-DRB1*04:05/*09:01.Conclusion.HLA-DRB1*09:01 differs from SE alleles with regard to anti-CCP levels and interaction with smoking, suggesting a distinct mechanism of HLA-DRB1*09:01 in the pathogenesis of RA that may bypass anti-CCP formation. Also, a significant increase of the HLA-DRB1*04:05/ *09:01 heterozygote in RA susceptibility may be attributable to the synergistic contribution of 2 different pathways in which 2 alleles participate independently.

Background. The influenza A H1N1/09 pandemic infected a small number of exposed individuals, which suggests the involvement of genetic factors. There are scarce data available on classical HLA class I association with the influenza A H1N1/09 pandemic. Methods. We analyzed the frequency of classical HLA class I alleles and haplotypes in A H1N1/09 influenza in a case-control study including 138 influenza patients (INF-P) and 225 asymptomatic healthy contacts (INF-C) simultaneously recruited. HLA class I typing was performed by high-resolution sequence-based typing method. Results. Our analysis revealed higher frequency of C∗07:02:01, B∗39:06:02, C∗03:02:01, B∗44:03:01, B∗51:01:05, and B∗73:01 (p<0.05; OR = 1.84–9.98) and of two haplotypes—A∗68:01:02-C∗07:02:01 (p=1.05E−05; OR = 23.99) and B∗35:01:01-C∗07:02.01 (p=4.15E−04, OR = 2.15)—in A H1N1/09 influenza subjects. A∗68:01:01 was exclusively present only in the INF-P group (5/138). A decrease in the frequency of C∗03:03:01, A∗11:01:01, B∗39:01:01, A∗24:02:01, C∗03:04:01, B∗51:01:01, and C∗07:01:01 (p<0.05; OR = 0.12–0.52) and of haplotypes A∗02:01:01-B∗35:01:01-C∗04:01:01, A∗24:02:01-B∗35:01:01, B∗39:01:01-C∗07:02:01, and B∗40:02:01-C∗03:04:01 (p<0.05; OR = 0.08–0.22) were observed in INF-P group. Conclusion. Selective classical HLA class I allele and haplotype combinations predispose individuals towards susceptibility or protection against the influenza A H1N1/09 pandemic. This work has significant implications for accessing population transmission risk for A H1N1/09 or a similar strain breakout in the future.

Vinte e nove linhagens de tomateiro rasteiro foram avaliadas quanto à eficiência de absorção de nutrientes e resposta à adubação, em dois ensaios, no ano de 2006, na Embrapa Hortaliças. No primeiro ensaio aplicou-se 1/3 da dosagem de fertilizante utilizada no segundo. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições. As linhagens foram classificadas quanto à eficiência na absorção de nutrientes e reposta à adubação baseando-se nos incrementos de índice DRIS e nos incrementos de produtividade. Os valores críticos para eficiência na absorção e resposta à adubação foram as médias de incremento de índice DRIS e produtividade, respectivamente. As linhagens diferenciaram-se quanto à eficiência na absorção dos nutrientes e quanto à resposta à adubação. Foram consideradas responsivas à adubação e eficientes na absorção de nutrientes as linhagens 03, 04, 05, 09 e 22, para o N; 03, 04, 09, 13, 15 e 29, para o P; 03, 05, 10, 21, 22, 25 e 27, para o K; 05, 10, 21, 22, 25, 27 e 29, para o Ca; 04, 13, 15, 27 e 29, para o S e B; e 03, 05, 09, 10 e 27, para o Cu. As linhagens com os melhores desempenhos foram a 27, na absorção dos nutrientes, e 03, 04, 05 e 29, na responsividade à adubação.

Abstract Background: Flaxseed has been extensively studied in in vitro and in vivo models for possible association with reducing the risk of breast cancer. Clinical trials have been limited. There has been confusion regarding whether it is safe and beneficial for breast cancer survivors to take flaxseed. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review to evaluate the existing randomized controlled trial to understand the safety and efficacy of using flaxseed for symptom control and reducing the risk of recurrence among breast cancer survivors. Patients and Methods: We conducted a literature search of English language publications in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane from the databases’ inception to May 2021 using the keywords flaxseed, breast cancer, randomized clinical trial, and human studies. Results: We identified three randomized controlled trials (RCT) that include patients with a history of breast cancer. Sample size ranged from 24 to 178 patients and treatment duration ranged from 13 to 42 days. The primary end points were hot flash severity (one study) and tumor biomarkers (two studies). There was no statistically significant reduction in mean hot flash score in the flaxseed group compared to the placebo group. One study showed a statistically significant reduction in Ki-67 (34.2%; P=0.001) and in c-erbB2 expression (71.0%; P=0.003), and an increase in apoptosis (30.7%; P=0.007) in the group that received flaxseed, but not in the placebo group. On the contrary, another study showed no difference in Ki-67, caspase, the Ki-67/caspase ratio, and Estrogen-receptor β. Two studies reported mild adverse events as shown in Table 1. None of the studies assessed the change in estrogen level. Risk of bias assessment showed that the overall risk of bias associated with the included studies is moderate to high. The high risk of bias originates from lack of blinding of participants and personnel. Conclusion: Current clinical research in breast cancer survivors is too limited to recommend flaxseed for cancer prevention. Flaxseed appears to be safe with mild side effects, however, the effect of flaxseed on estrogen concentration has not been established. Ce travail vise à étudier le séchage de la mangue à différentes épaisseurs et températures en vue de valorisation. Les expériences ont été menées à partir d’une matrice factorielle par la méthode gravimétrique statique. Les valeurs expérimentales ont été ajustées à huit modèles empiriques par la méthode du gradient afin d’estimer les paramètres et coefficients des modèles. Les critères statistiques que sont le R², l’erreur quadratique moyenne (EQM) et le χ² ont servi à justifier le choix du modèle de séchage. Le séchage a duré 16-18 ; 23-27 et 29-33 minutes respectivement aux températures 60, 50 et 40°C pour les épaisseurs 1,5 et 1 cm. Le modèle logarithmique est retenu et présente les valeurs du R² (0,9984 ; 0,9984 ; 0,9981 ; 0,9987 ; 0,9988 ; 0,9985) les plus élevées et les plus faibles valeurs de χ² (2,43 e-07 ; 1,58 e-07 ; 1,25 e-06 ; 2,02 e-07 ; 4,56 e-06 et 1,37 e-06) et EQM (2,42 e-04 ; 1,95 e-07 ; 5,47 e-04 ; 2,20 e-04 ; 0,0010 et 5,69 e-04). Le coefficient de diffusion varie de 8,615 e-09 à 9,155 e-09 m² / s et dépend fortement de la température de séchage. English Title: Mathematical modeling of the drying in an oven (hot air) of slices of mango (Mangifera indica L.)This work aims to study the drying of mango at different thicknesses and temperatures a view to valorization. The experiments were carried out from a factor matrix by the static gravimetric method. The experimental values were fitted to eight empirical models by the gradient method in order to estimate the parameters and coefficients of the models. The statistical criteria of R², mean square error (MSE) and χ² were used to justify the choice of the drying model. Drying lasted 16-18; 23-27 and 29-33 minutes respectively at temperatures 60, 50 and 40 °C for thicknesses 1.5 and 1 cm. Chagas disease is responsible for a large number of human infections and many are also at risk of infection. There is no effective drug for Chagas disease treatment. The Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology at Fiocruz, Brazil, has designed three nitro analogs of the nitroimidazole-thiadiazole, megazol: two triazole analogs PTAL 05-02 and PAMT 09 and a pyrazole analog PTAL 04-09. A set ofSalmonella entericaserovar Typhimurium strains were used in the bacterial reverse mutation test (Ames test) to determine the mutagenicity and cytotoxicity of megazol and its nitro analogs. Megazol presented positive mutagenic activity at very low concentration, either with or without metabolic activation S9 mix. The mutagenic response of the analogs was detected at higher concentration than the lowest megazol concentration to yield mutagenic activity showing that new advances can be made to develop new analogs. The micronucleus test with rat macrophage cells was used in the genotoxic evaluation. The analogs were capable of inducing micronucleus formation and showed cytotoxic effects. PTAL 04-09 structural modifications might be better suitable for the design of promising new drugs candidate for Chagas’ disease treatment.

Abstract The typical citrus germplasm collection in South Sulawesi has not been thoroughly characterized, especially in several citrus development centers, which have begun to be promoted again after the decline in productivity due to CVPD infection. The study of citrus diversity is very important to support future citrus breeding programs. Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) has been widely used for the analysis of genetic diversity among species in populations. In this study, 23 RAPD primers were used on Citrus cultivated in Selayar and Pangkep Regencies, which are citrus development areas in South Sulawesi. A total of 19 primers (OPA-05, OPA-09, OPA-17, OPC-09, OPC-17, OPE-04, OPH-04, OPH-15, OPN-14, 0PN-16, OPR-08, OPR-20, OPW-06, OPW-09, OPX-07, OPX-11, OPX-17, UBC-18, and UBC-51) can form polymorphic bands in randomly selected DNA samples. Monomorphic bands were formed by OPA-12 and OPD-07 primer in 12 samples. The primers OPX-13 and OPX-16 produced unclear bands. These 19 primers can be used to amplify DNA and determine the genetic diversity of Citrus in further analysis.

Background: Women suffering from seizure-related illnesses are prescribed phenytoin during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. But the teratogenic effect of this drug on limb development needs exploration. This study was designed to investigate the time-mediated teratogenic effect of sodium phenytoin on limb development of chick embryos on days 04 and 09 of development using the stereomicroscope and at the time of hatching. Material and Methods: This randomized control trial comprised of two main groups of fertilized chicken eggs (Egyptian Fayoumi breed), control group A and experimental group B, each having 90 eggs. Each experimental egg was injected with sodium phenytoin (3.5 mg, teratogenic dose) just before incubation. Both the groups were divided into three subgroups each A1, A2, & A3/B1, B2 & B3. Stereomicroscope was used to observe the limb buds and cartilaginous elements in subgroups 1 and 2 on days 04 and 09 of development respectively. The embryos of subgroups 3 were assessed for gross limb deformities on hatching. Survival was noted in all the subgroups.Results: The difference in limb bud size between experimental and controls was statistically insignificant. There was no variation or deformity in the bones. The experimental group 3 had gross limb defects on hatching and the difference in survival was also statistically significant in subgroups 3.Conclusion: Prenatal administration of sodium phenytoin induces limb defects in chick embryos as evident after hatching but limb anomalies are not observed on days 04 and 09 of development as investigated by stereomicroscope. We conclude that the teratogenic effect of phenytoin is time-mediated.

Ailton Krenak é líder indígena, ambientalista e escritor. Nasceu em 1953 no estado de Minas Gerais, na região do Médio Rio Doce. Aos dezessete anos de idade, mudou-se com sua família para o estado do Paraná, onde se alfabetizou e se tornou produtor gráfico e jornalista. Na década de 1980, passou a dedicar-se exclusivamente ao movimento indígena. Em 1985, fundou a organização não governamental Núcleo de Cultura Indígena, que visa promover a cultura indígena. Foi durante a Assembleia Constituinte, em 1987, que Ailton protagonizou uma das cenas mais marcantes da mesma: em discurso na tribuna, vestido com um terno branco, pintou o rosto com tinta preta para protestar contra o que considerava um retrocesso na luta pelos direitos indígenas. Em 1988, participou da fundação da União dos Povos Indígenas, organização que busca representar os interesses indígenas no cenário nacional. Em 1989, participou da Aliança dos Povos da Floresta, movimento que busca o estabelecimento de reservas naturais na Amazônia onde fosse possível a subsistência econômica através da extração do látex da seringueira, bem como da coleta de outros produtos da floresta. Retornou a Minas Gerais, onde passou a se dedicar ao Núcleo de Cultura Indígena. Desde 1998, a organização realiza, na região da Serra do Cipó, em Minas Gerais, um festival idealizado por Ailton: o Festival de Dança e Cultura Indígena, promovendo a integração entre as diferentes populações indígenas. SUMMARYThis study investigated clinical implications of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) I and II haplotypes, in combination with HBV sub-genotype C2, in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections in northeastern China. Here, HLA haplotypes of 230 HBV-infected patients were compared to 210 healthy, unrelated Han individuals. Of the 230 HBV-infected patients, 54 had acute self-limited hepatitis (ASH) with sub-genotype C2 (ASH-C2), 144 had chronic hepatitis (CH) with sub-genotypes C2 and B2 (CH-C2 and CH-B2), and 32 spontaneously recovered without sub-genotype results. All groups underwent HLA typing and haplotype analysis. The results revealed that A*02-DRB1*12 and A*02-B*15-DRB1*09 carriers were susceptible to HBV infection. A*02-B*15-DRB1*09 is probably associated with acute onset and viral clearance and A*02-DRB1*12, with viral persistence. In HBV infections, B*40-DRB1*12 was associated with HBV persistence, whereas B*46-DRB1*09, A*24-DRB1*14, and B*15-DRB1*04 carriers easily recovered from the disease. By contrast, when infected with the HBV-C2 sub-genotype, A*24-DRB1*14, B*15-DRB1*04, A*02-B*15, A*02-DRB1*15, and A*02-B*15-DRB1*09 carriers displayed an acute clinical course before recovery. This study reveals a relationship between HLA haplotypes and HBV pathogenesis, thereby providing potential therapeutic targets to treat HBV infection.

The yield and insect resistance of 12 sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) clones grown in two different production systems (organic black plastic mulch and conventional bare ground) were evaluated in 2016 and 2017 in coastal South Carolina. Significant differences in total storage root yield, marketable storage root yield, U.S. No. 1 storage root yield, and percent of U.S. No. 1 storage roots in all trials were found, except for percent of U.S. No. 1 storage roots in 2017 for the organic black plastic mulch trial. In the organic black plastic mulch trials, ‘Bonita’ and USDA-04-136 consistently produced high marketable yields, whereas ‘Ruddy’ and USDA-W388 consistently produced the lowest marketable yields. ‘Averre’, ‘Beauregard’, ‘Covington’, and USDA-09-130 exhibited variable performance, with marketable yields among the highest in a single year. For the conventional trials, USDA-04-136 consistently produced high marketable yields, whereas ‘Ruddy’ and USDA-W-388 consistently produced the lowest marketable yields. ‘Averre’, ‘Bonita’, ‘Covington’, and USDA-09-130 exhibited variable performance, with marketable yields among the highest in a single year. For the organic black plastic mulch, significant differences were detected in the percent of uninjured roots and percent white grub (primarily Plectris aliena) damage in 2016 and in wireworm (Elateridae)-cucumber beetle (Diabrotica)-flea beetle (Systena) severity index (WDS severity index) in 2016 and 2017. USDA-04-136 and USDA-W-388 consistently had the lowest WDS severity index, whereas ‘Covington’ consistently had the highest WDS severity index. For the conventional trials, significant differences were found among clones in both years for all insect rating variables, except for percent sweetpotato weevil (Cylas formicarius elegantulus) damage. ‘Ruddy’, USDA-04-136, and USDA-W-388 consistently yielded the highest percent of uninjured roots, whereas ‘Averre’, ‘Bonita’, SC-1149-19, and USDA-09-130 consistently had the lowest percent of uninjured roots. The research reported here for yield and insect resistance under conventional and organic production systems will be useful for producers in the selection of cultivars suitable for growth in South Carolina.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic variability of common bean lines for cycle, weight of 100 grains, grain yield, cooking time, and grain calcium and iron concentrations. Twenty-four common bean lines were evaluated in two crop cycles (2010 and 2011). The ¯Z index was used for the selection of superior lines for most of the traits. The DF 06-19, DF 06-03, DF 06-17, DF 06-20, DF 06-11, DF 06-14, DF 06-01, DF 06-08, DF 06-22, and DF 06-04 lines showed high grain yield. All lines were of semi-early cycle and of fast cooking. The DF 06-08 and DF 06-23 lines showed high calcium concentration in grains (>1.4 g kg-1 dry matter - DM), and the DF 06-09, DF 06-03, DF 06-04, and DF 06-06 lines presented high iron concentration in grains (>0.95 g kg-1 DM) in the two crop cycles. The DF 06-09 and DF 06-03 carioca lines present high agronomic performance and high iron concentration in grains. The DF 06-17 and DF 06-08 black lines present high agronomic performance and high calcium concentration in grains. The selection of the DF 06-09, DF 06-03, DF 06-17, and DF 06-08 lines is recommended.
