This chapter discusses urban developments in two major cities in Serbia, Belgrade and Novi Sad, influenced by the Balkan political crisis of the 1990s. Belgrade is the national capital of Serbia, with a dominantly Serbian population. Novi Sad is the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, and home to a population of more than 20 different ethnicities. The seemingly bipolar relationship between these two cities started to emerge during the fall of Yugoslavia and has intensified during the subsequent shrinkage of the country into the current state of Serbia. The effects of war as well as migration have left their mark on the urban situation of both cities. Both cities are not old by European standards, Belgrade emerging before the rise of the Ottoman Empire and Novi Sad being a product of the eighteenth century and the rise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. These two cities traditionally vary in size and ethnic make up from almost mono-ethnic Belgrade to multi-ethnic Novi Sad. This paper will explore the idea that national capitals such as Belgrade can give rise to “un-national capitals” such as Novi Sad. This will be viewed through a lens of the role of architecture and design in affecting the realities of both cities.

Urban parks are vital components of city ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, climate resilience, air and water quality, health, socialization, and economic benefits for citizens in urban areas. This paper examines urban parks in Novi Sad by gathering opinions on their qualities and functions through a questionnaire. The respondents were students enrolled in the landscape architecture course at the University of Novi Sad. To analyze their responses, multivariate statistical analysis techniques, including ANOVA, MANOVA, and contingency tables, were applied. The results highlight the primary reasons for visiting urban parks in general, as well as specific parks in Novi Sad. The paper offers insights into visitor behavior, including the frequency and length of their stays, etc., and provides an assessment of the parks’ educational functions, which were expected to be highly relevant for the respondent group. The results can be relevant for further urban park development and serve as a starting point for applying multi-criteria (MC) analysis. Specifically, the results can be used to define a set of criteria, goals, and other essential elements necessary for conducting Analytic Hierarchy Processes or similar MC analysis methods.

Background/Aim. Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and more than a half of all health insurance expenditures for reimbursed medicines are allocated to antihypertensive drugs in Serbia. The aim of this study was to identify the antihypertensive drug utilization patterns among hypertensive outpatients in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia, determine the adherence to clinical guidelines and address the economic aspects of current prescribing practices. Methods. This retrospective observational study was conducted in Novi Sad over a period of six months. The data on the number of packages, size of packages, and retail price of antihypertensives issued on prescription in outpatients with the diagnosis of essential arterial hypertension was collected from all state-owned pharmacies in Novi Sad. Drug consumption was analyzed using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC)/defined daily dose (DDD) methodology. Results. Total consumption of antihypertensives issued on prescription over 6 month period in the city of Novi sad, Serbia was 283,48 DDD per 1,000 inhabitans per day (DID). Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) were most commonly prescribed drugs, and were used 3 times more often than calcium channel blockers and 5 times more than betablockers. The consumption of diuretics and angiotensin receptor antagonists was low within all groups of outpatients. Both national and international guidelines state superiority and effectiveness of diuretics in treatment of hypertension in the elderly, but their consumption was unreasonable low despite the fact that over 70% of all antihypertensive drugs in the city of Novi Sad were dispensed in people aged > 60. The use of more expensive ACEi was observed, despite the guidelines deeming all the drugs of these class equally effective in treatment of hypertension. Conclusion. Large differences in utilization of different groups of antihypertensive agents were noted in this study. Underutilization of valuable, efficacious, and cost-effective thiazide diuretics and over use of expensive ACE inhibitors is unjustifiable. There is a potential for large savings with switching to low-price ACEi, modeling the practice of Scandinavian countries.

The beginning of the new millennium provokes governments and researchers to recognize the importance and the effect that Particulate Matter (PM) has on the whole environment. PM has been marked as one of the key ambient air pollutants, due to its high sorption ability. World Health Organization indicated PM present in ambient air as pollutant with adverse, acute and hazard effect on human health and built environment. The city of Novi Sad, Serbia is rapidly expanding, redefining architectural, urban and environmental matrices. Architectural spatial transformations - construction sites need to be considered as temporal unique pollution hot spots. Trend of active construction sites increasing number in Novi Sad affects the ambient air quality. Goal of the research is to emphasize PM pollution problem on the construction sites in Novi Sad and to illustrate and display the trends in mitigation measures application during 4-year period (2019-2022).

Natural habitats on the territory of Novi Sad are almost fully destroyed today, as well as their characteristic plant taxa. The reason for disappearance of natural habitats is the development of suburban communities, which is an irreversible process. Plant taxa, specific for wet, salty, and sandy ecosystems grew on those habitats twenty years ago and earlier. This paper presents the overview of 9 taxa (Suaeda maritima subsp. maritima, Androsace elongata subsp. elongata, Cirsium boujartii subsp. boujartii, Aster sedifolius subsp. canus, Blackstonia perfoliata subsp. serotina, Plantago maritima subsp. maritima, Salvia nutans, Allium angulosum, and Typha schuttleworthii). These taxa presented integral parts of autochthonous flora of Novi Sad. Since some of these taxa were found in the field 21 years ago and some even 93 years ago, they are extinct from the flora of Novi Sad.

AbstractUnderrepresentation of women in leadership positions in universities is a phenomenon present in most countries of the world, with some significant differences. In our work we focused on obstacles that women professors in Novi Sad University (Serbia) faced in reaching leadership positions. Analysis is based on qualitative research using a semi structured interview, statistical data and selected secondary sources. Obstacles, mentorship and networking have been researched from an idiographic perspective (reflection and the personal experience of the women at Novi Sad University). Results indicate a significant underrepresentation of women in leadership positions at Novi Sad University. Findings point to a general pattern: the more power and authority the leadership position holds, the scarcer the number of women participating in it. According to interviewees’ statements the patriarchal value system makes the leadership positions difficult to attain for women. Interview analysis also suggests additional limiting factors, such as lack of mentorship and inadequate networking, acting as inhibitors in reaching leadership positions.

Ambient air pollution is a very considerable and complex physicochemical and environmental issue. Particulate matter - PM is one of the fundamental pollutants constituted in ambient air. Rapidly expanding urban transformations in city of Novi Sad, Serbia, produces high concentrations of PM. The vast and growing number of construction sites as pollution emission hotspots induce constant nuisance for the people, build surrounding and environment in total. Serbian legislation has set PM pollution limit values for daily emissions, but the Air Pollutant Registry still doesn?t recognize construction sites as severe sources of PM emergence. Understanding the importance and the effects of PM emission from construction sites is crucial in environmental preservation. For the preparation and application of methods and techniques for prevention and mitigation, suitable environmental pollution modeling needs to be achieved. The aim of the research is to assess and determine the utility of Tier 1 prediction model designed by EPA and environmental modeling software ADMS - URBAN on observed construction sites in Novi Sad, Serbia. Assessing monitoring data confirms construction sites as significant PM 10 and PM2.5 pollution sources. Two sets of correction coefficients were calculated for PM10 and PM2.5, using average and median values, 2.56 - 2.54 and 1.03 - 0.97 respectively. The research study was for the first time conducted in Novi Sad, Serbia in the case of construction sites.

Biodiversity and biodiversity preservation are some of the most important topics in ecology. Protecting biodiversity in urban ecosystems is especially challenging. Urban parks are a valuable part of green infrastructure in cities, as they contribute to preserving natural habitats for many species. Biodiversity can be quantified by calculating different diversity indices, and in this paper, we have calculated alpha indices (Shannon, Simpson, Fisher, Berger-Parker and Margalef index) and beta indices (Sorensen index, Jaccard distance and Bray-Curtis index) for the Futog park in Novi Sad, Serbia, within two periods, 2005 and 2020. The goal of the paper is to analyze the current values of biodiversity indices in the park and compare them with the ones from 15 years ago. In addition to the analysis of biodiversity indices values, the paper provides the comparison of taxonomic structure of flora, and the abundance of native, endemic and invasive species in the park, in 2005 and 2020. The results show that the values of biodiversity indices have decreased in the indicated period of time, and one of the main causes can be related to the spread of invasive species within the park. For calculation purposes, we have used the R program and the R package ?vegan?.

The spatial distribution of the annual mean urban heat island (UHI) intensity pattern was analysed for the medium-sized city Novi Sad, Serbia, located on the low and flat Great Hungarian Plain. The UHI pattern was determined by an empirical modelling method developed by (Balázs et al. 2009). This method was based on datasets from urban areas of Szeged and Debrecen (Hungary). The urban study area in Novi Sad (60 km2) was established as a grid network of 240 cells (0.5 km ×0.5 km). A Landsat satellite image (from June 2006) was used in order to evaluate normalized difference vegetation index and built-up ratio by cells. The pattern of the obtained UHI intensity values show concentric-like shapes when drawn as isotherms, mostly increase from the suburbs towards the inner urban areas. Results of this thermal pattern and determination of one of the local climate classification systems were used for recommending 10 locations for representative stations of an urban climate network in Novi Sad.

The global trend of increasing urbanization and motorization represents a major obstacle in the sustainable development and planning of cities. This trend did not bypass the city of Novi Sad (Serbia), which, despite good cultural and historical preconditions for the development of sustainable forms of transport, did not resist the sudden increase in the degree of motorization. The aim of this work is to present how favorable the existing structure of the city is for the development of sustainable types of traffic (mainly walking and cycling). Furthermore, this research aims to establish the link between bikeability and walkability and walking and cycling in the city through a survey questionnaire thus aiming to show how much the planned land use affects the increase or decrease in walkability and bikeability in the city of Novi Sad in order to establish whether the planning documents respect the principle of sustainability defined by law. The methodological procedure is adapted to European cities and the information base available in the researched area is based on the walkability and bikeability index. The results showed that the city of Novi Sad has the potential and morphology to support sustainable modes of transport, but the planning documents do not recognize the imperative of change towards sustainability.

The local governing unit of the City of Novi Sad issued a public procurement in 2021 for the first strategic noise maps for the territory of the Novi Sad agglomeration. The strategic noise maps were methodologically and in terms of content realized in accordance with the local regulations of the Republic of Serbia that were in effect, as well as the Directive EU 2015/996 (CNOSSOS - EU:2015) and Directive 2002/49/EZ (better known as "European Noise Directive – END") guidelines. Road traffic was specifically analyzed due to it being the dominant noise source in the agglomeration. During the realization of the strategic noise maps a noise model for road traffic was created, with more than 3.000 road sections, where a road section is a part between two road junctions for the entire traffic infrastructure, with parameters for the acoustic model defined from point-to-point along the section. A part of the traffic data was gathered through the Traffic Study of Novi Sad 2029, which encompassed the Transportation Model of Novi Sad – NOSTRAM Model [1], the realization of which was planned as part of the development of General Plan of Novi Sad until 2029. The calculations encompassed more than 70.000 buildings with 147.618 living units and 320.346 inhabitants on a total area of 137,96 km2. This strategic document is the first step in noise management and environmental noise assessment, the data of which is used as the basis for action plans for environmental noise protection through which noise reduction measures are defined.

The development of orthopedic surgery in Novi Sad and Voivodina is related to the name of Dr. Katherine MacPhail, a Scottish physician, who came to Serbia during the World War I, where she worked with her mission in Belgrade and Kragujevac. After the war, she remained in Serbia and, in 1921, founded the first children's, co-called English-Serbian Hospital; then, in 1934, established English-Yugoslav Children's Hospital for Treatment of Osteoarticular Tuberculosis in Sremska Kamenica, which was open until 1941. After the end of World War II, as early as in 1947, Dr. MacPhail returned to Sremska Kamenica, where she reactivated the hospital. After the nationalization of the hospital, she left for Scotland, but the hospital kept working, first under the supervision of the Belgrade Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, and then as a ward of the Clinic for Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Novi Sad School of Medicine, until 1992, when it was closed.

With the development of information technologies and weakening of the economic power of citizens in the Republic of Serbia, interest in classical theater has decreased. As a result of their reduced activity, theater facilities are gradually deteriorating, and some are being adapted while others are being closed. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the quality of significant urban parameters, to observe the possibilities for improvement of the functioning of theaters, and to propose concrete measures for revitalization of their surroundings. The efficiency and validity of a defined research methodology were tested on three representative examples, the Serbian National Theater, the Youth Theater, and the Novi Sad Theater, located in Novi Sad in Serbia. Upon recognition of the current state of the spatial, physical, functional and ecological conditions of the areas surrounding the representative theaters, the current problems were recorded, and measures are proposed that would be necessary for the theaters? revitalization.

By the end of the 20th century, a new specific form of tourism was presented to the world by the name of architourism. Architecture, in a general sense, is science and the art of projecting and shaping buildings or, i.e., interior and exterior architectural space. Novi Sad, the second largest city in Serbia, located on Pannonian Plain, is famous for its incredibly rich historic and cultural heritage. There are various styles of architecture dominating the city itself, among which is the ever-present Art Nouveau in the Hungarian style. Novi Sad has fewer monuments and buildings erected in this style, as opposed to Subotica, but they are very high-quality and distinctive. Some influential architects had worked in that period in Novi Sad, and on top of that list was Lipot Baumhorn, responsible for the Synagogue, Menratova palace, the palace of "Vojvođanska banka", followed by Karolj Kovač, Đerđ Kopecki, Imre Frensek, Geza Markuš, Frđeš Špigel, Bela Peko, and others. This paper aims to emphasize the cultural-historic influence of buildings in the Art Nouveau style as a significant form of tourism.

Background/Aim. Data on sodium intake and sources of sodium in the diet in Serbia are limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the sodium intake and identify the sources of sodium in the diet of undergraduate students attending the University of Novi Sad. Methods. Students completed a questionnaire to gather data on their gender, age and university faculty attended, and then a 24 h dietary recall. The sodium intake of the students was calculated using the dietary recall data and data on the sodium content of foods. The contribution of different food groups as well as of specific foodstuffs to the total sodium intake was calculated. Results. The mean estimated sodium intake of the students was 3,938.5 ? 1,708.1 mg/day. The sodium intake of 89.1% of the surveyed students exceeded the guideline for sodium intake, the majority of the sodium coming from processed foods (78.9% of the total sodium intake). The food groups that contributed the most to the total sodium intake of the students were meat and meat products (21.7%) and cereals and cereal-based products (18.6%). Bread and other bakery products were responsible for 13.1% of the total sodium intake. Conclusion. High sodium intake in students of the University of Novi Sad puts them at high risk of developing high blood pressure. The food industry should work towards reformulating products with high sodium content, especially bread and other bakery products. Efforts should be taken to reduce sodium intake among undergraduate students in Novi Sad.

The urban microclimate is gradually changing due to climate change, extreme weather conditions, urbanization, and the heat island effect. In such an altered environment, outdoor thermal comfort can have a strong impact on public health and quality of life in urban areas. In this study, three main urban areas in Serbia were selected: Belgrade (Central Serbia), Novi Sad (Northern Serbia), and Niš (Southern Serbia). The focus was on the temporal assessment of OTC, using the UTCI over a period of 20 years (1999–2018) during different seasons. The main aim is the general estimation of the OTC of Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš, in order to gain better insight into the bioclimatic condition, current trends and anomalies that have occurred. The analysis was conducted based on an hourly (7 h, 14 h, and 21 h CET) and “day by day” meteorological data set. Findings show the presence of a growing trend in seasonal UTCI anomalies, especially during summer and spring. In addition, there is a notable increase in the number of days above the defined UTCI thresholds for each season. Average annual UTCIs values also show a positive, rising trend, ranging from 0.50 °C to 1.33 °C. The most significant deviations from the average UTCI values, both seasonal and annual, were recorded in 2000, 2007, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2018.

AbstractSpecimens of a Longidorus species, here described as L. danuvii sp. n., were recovered from the rhizosphere of Amorpha fruticosa growing in a floodplain forest on the bank of the river Danube at Novi Sad, Serbia; a second population was collected from Populus sp. also at Novi Sad. Longidorus danuvii sp. n. is characterised by medium sized body length (3.7-5.4 mm), slightly expanded, anteriorly flattened and laterally rounded lip region, set off by a depression from the rest of the body, distinctly bilobed amphidial pouches with lobes of about equal length, medium odontostyle length (86-101 μ m) and elongate, conoid tail with more or less bent appearance. Four juvenile developmental stages were identified. A second Longidorus species, identified as L. silvae, was recovered from the rhizosphere of Quercus petraea at Rakovac, Fruška Gora mountain, Serbia. The discovery of two males is the second record for this species. PCR-RFLP analyses of the ITS containing regions and sequences of the D3 region of the 26S rDNA were done.

Introduction. Sudden cardiac death is an unexpected natural death from cardiac causes. It is the most common and first manifestation of coronary artery disease. It accounts for 50% of mortality from cardiovascular disease in the United States of America and other developed countries, so measures that can reduce it are an important medical task. Case Report. A 55-year old man suddenly lost consciousness at the train station in Novi Sad. An eyewitness provided first aid and ventricular fibrillation was converted to sinus rhythm by means of the automated external defibrillator. Emergency Medical Service Novi Sad soon arrived, continued resuscitation procedure, and transported the patient to the Cardiac Care Unit, who was then diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction and primary percutaneous coronary intervention was performed. Resuscitative hypothermia was applied in acute phase to prevent further brain injury. During further hospitalization the patient was stable, woke up from coma and early rehabilitation measures were implemented. After six months the patient had normal physical activities and there was no left ventricular segmental hypokinesia on echocardiography. Conclusion. The application of all four chains of survival is important in increasing the survival rate of patients with sudden cardiac arrest.

This paper intends to show that the presence of aesthetic consciousness in the architecture of selected examples implies the existence of aesthetic consciousness of the author and consequently the existence of creative processes of the author-creator. Furthermore, this paper presents and analyses an identified causal link: after an overview of observational aesthetic elements, it focuses on experiential aesthetic elements, which implicate the presence of the author's aesthetic consciousness, as well as the existence of the author-creator's creative processes in the object from the analysed architectural sample. More specifically, this paper explores the use of experiential aesthetic elements: 1) aesthetic intent, 2) intuition, 3) imagination, and 4) speculative thinking through a display, systematisation and evaluation of all 31 public buildings on Bulevar Oslobodjenja (Liberation Boulevard), an arterial road in Novi Sad, Serbia. An analysis of the given architectural and urban sample, along with an evaluation of the employed (experiential) aesthetic aspects, demonstrates not only the presence of aesthetic consciousness, but also its presence in the author himself and thus the presence of quality of the architecture and urban planning from the second half of the twentieth century through to the first decade of the twenty-first century in Serbia.

In Serbia, sugar beet is grown in the province of Vojvodina mostly. The increase in areas sown to this crop in the province from 30,000 hectares in 1931-1939 to over 70,000 in 1951-2000 provided a large boost to the reproduction of sugar beet pests in this part of the country. More than 15 species are considered major pests of sugar beet. The Department of Plant and Environmental Protection of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad and the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad have been making forecasts of the occurrence of major sugar beet pests since 1961. Over the last 30 years (1975-2004), the following average pest numbers per meter square at the end of the growing season have been recorded: Bothynoderes punctiventris (3.3), Elateridae (3.6), Melolonthidae (1.0), Scotia spp. (0.4), Mamestra spp. (1.5) and Scrobipalpa ocellatella (14.8). In addition to these population dynamics of the following pest species are also monitored: Lixus scabricollis, Chaetocnema tibialis, Cassida spp., Aphis fabae, Pemphigus fuscicornis, Autographa gamma and Loxostege sticticalis.

The Railway road bridge in Novi Sad (Serbia) is situated on the international railroad line No 2 (Belgrade-Budapest) and designed for two railway tracks (160 km/h), two road lanes and two footpaths. The bridge structure consists of four structures: two approach composite bridges at the banks and two steel tied network arch bridges over the river. The spans are 27,0 m + 177,0 m + 3,0 m + 219,0 m + 48,0 m, totally 474,0 m in length. The rises of arches are 34,0 m and 42,0 m respectively. The width of the bridge is 31,5 m. The arches and ties, as well as the girders of the approach spans, are steel box girders. The decks of all bridge structures are the composite reinforced concrete slabs with thickness of 300 mm, locally 400 mm. The launching itself was very complex and unique, in both analysis and construction. The arch bridges were fully assembled on the banks and launched by skids over the bank and by pontoons over the river, to the final position on piers. The bridge is, despite of heavy loads and structural complexity, very rational in steel volumes and construction costs as well.

Only 12 years after Paris, the first Pasteur Institute in Serbia and the Balkans was founded in Nis, in 1900. Its contribution to preventive medicine of Serbia was enormous, primarily in production of vaccine against variola and rabies. After the liberation in 1919, the Pasteur Institute was re-established and it continued its scientific work under the management of Gerasim Alivizatos, a Greek who had come to help Serbian people. He is the author of the so-called mixed method in rabies prophylaxis, in which he combined dilution of live vaccine with concentrated ether treated vaccine. He published his work on this method in the journal Deutschen Medicinische Wochenschrift in 1922. After 1928, the only active Pasteur Institute in the whole Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was the Pasteur Institute in Novi Sad, which has remained the central anti-rabies institution to the present day. Its first director, Dr. Adolf Hempt, born in Novi Sad in 1874, was the author of the world famous vaccine against rabies, which was named after him and was in use from 1925 to 1989. He was the first in the world to have made a completely inactive, i.e. dead vaccine, which was much safer for use, so many European countries such as Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary gradually accepted it under the name of Hempt, and from the Novi Sad Institute it was exported to some African countries as well. Dr Hempt published his first work on the new vaccine in the magazine Annales de l'Institut Pasteur in 1925 in French, and he also published a monograph in German by Bering Institute in 1938, nowadays ranked as a monograph of international importance.

Air quality is a very important parameter both for one human and for all living beings on earth. Adequate protection and improvement of the environment and air is the area of a great importance on which Republic of Serbia has to work continuously. Tracking (or monitoring) the state and quality of the environment includes a series of actions aimed at obtaining the reliable data on the condition of the environmental pollution. By the Regulation of establishing the List of air quality categories according to zones and agglomerations on the territory of Republic of Serbia for the year 2018, it was determined that air quality in the agglomeration "Novi Sad" is in the first category, which means that the air is clean or slightly polluted (pollutant substances did not cross the limit values). Bearing in mind the importance of the topic, at the very beginning of this article, the problem of air pollution is more closely defined with reference to the legal treatment of protection and the improvement of the environment in general and air as a separate category. This article is primarily focused on the analysis of practical experiences regarding air quality monitoring for the City of Novi Sad.
