An expressing media with literature work could indirectly convey various social criticisms toward a certain phenomenon. The most frequently occurring social criticism is the social reality portrayal of a community. This study aims to describe the form of social criticism contained in the poetry entitled Rahi(i)m by Kedung Darma Romansha. Using qualitative methods and a literary sociology approach, especially social criticism, this study reveals the author's worldview of phenomena that occur in society. The study results show that the author of poetry criticises social situations, namely: the author's criticism of poverty, crime, family disharmony, juvenile delinquency, violation of norms, and environmental problems. Social criticism also reveals the author's disappointment, annoyance, anger, and regret towards the arrogant and unfair performance of government officials in responding to socio-cultural problems that occur in society.

Interviews with participants in the decision-making processes for major installations in six western European countries reveal criticism of the procedures from all sides. In particular, environmental impact assessments were criticised for their lack of independence from the proposer, failure to assess alternatives to the proposal adequately, incomprehensibility to lay-people and failure to consider social factors. There was also criticism of general lack of public involvement in the decision-making process. Consideration of these criticisms lends support to calls for revision of the European directives on environmental impact assessment and their implementation in national laws.

Theres many ways can be done to appreciate the voices of messages and criticisms through creative ways, one of them through comics. One of the Indonesian comic artists who used comics as a medium of social criticism was Haryadhi through his "Komik Strip Untuk Umum (KOSTUM)” creation. KOSTUM Comics record the events that are happening and pour them into comic strips spread through social media. This research is a qualitative descriptive type using Roland Barthes' semiotics theory with two-stage significance (two orders of signification). From the results of the study, researchers found the implicit meaning that is to criticize and satirize the behavior of Indonesian people in a subtle way. Criticism expressed to comics is directed directly at the actors but is delicately wrapped with humorous portrayals through their characters. From the KOSTUM comics examined can be concluded that the social criticism described in the comic is an expression of the condition of the community related to the values that are used as a guideline for living in community groups. Keywords: Comics, Social Criticism, Semiotics, Roland Barthes

A discussion about a proper woman always includes the discussion of the concept of separate spheres. In Victorian Age for instance, a proper woman is perfectly described by the term Angel in the House. Seventeenth century Netherlands also expected the same thing for women in that era. The concept of separate spheres along with its expectations of womens proper roles is an example of social construction of gender which defines women. This study is conducted to reveal the criticisms towards the idea of proper woman in The Miniaturist. The results of this study are: first, women who are considered proper by the society in The Miniaturist have two roles, which are being a wife and being a mother. Moreover, women are also expected to have five characteristics: obedient, powerless, submissive, dependent, and domesticated. Second, The Miniaturist, using the setting in the 17th century Netherlands as a tool to criticize people in the 21st century, tries to redefine the way society thinks, including women, about womens life. The criticisms found in the novel cover four things: criticism towards womens expected roles; criticism towards womens obedience; criticism towards womens powerlessness, submissiveness, and dependence; and criticism towards womens domestication. The text tries to make women more aware of their own value. Women are also suggested to have self-dominion over themselves, and be more critical, independent, and tougher. Societys mindset regarding womens value and capability in the present time is also redefined. The most important thing is the text tries to make people in the 21st century understand women as individuals or persons who have their own right and independence. Keywords: criticism, proper woman

Abstract Rhetorical criticism in Old Testament studies—indeed, in biblical studies in general—had its origins in a self-conscious way in 1968, when James Muilenburg issued his now-famous call to go beyond form criticism and focus upon the unique features of a text. Since then, biblical rhetorical criticisms have flourished. However, in Old Testament studies, rhetorical criticism has tended to be primarily a literary concern, with emphasis upon stylistics. Classical and contemporary rhetorical criticisms are very different, however. These focus particularly upon the suasive aspects of spoken discourse. This paper reviews the history of rhetorical criticism in Old Testament studies and in the field of speech and rhetoric, comparing and contrasting approaches. It then issues a call to biblical scholars to practice a truly "rhetorical" criticism, based upon speech and persuasion.

Sahih Muslim is not free from criticism like other books as well. Most of the criticism are on its narrators, where the narrator is an important element in determining the acceptance or rejection of a hadith. The criticisms against the narrators in Sahih Muslim may affect its validity. However, with the presence of ‘al-Mustakhrajat’ genre especially Mustakhraj Abi ᶜAwanah, such criticisms can be addressed through its narrations. Based on this, this study seeks to identify the types of criticism correlated with contentious narrators in the Sahih Muslim. This study employs inductive, analytical and critical methodology on the narrations of Mustakhraj Abi ᶜAwanah for dealing with those criticisms. This study found that Mustakhraj Abi ᶜAwanah is one of the books that has strong effect to react against criticism and to defend the hadith narrators in particular the narrations of Sahih Muslim along with supporting their narrations through other reliable narrators.

This research examined whether linguistic abstraction in group-directed criticisms moderates the intergroup sensitivity effect. Study 1 ( N = 76) showed that criticisms coming from an out-group member and formulated in concrete terms—which imply lower generalizability and stability of the information transmitted—provoked less negative reactions compared with out-group criticisms formulated in abstract terms. Linguistic abstraction did not affect reactions to in-group criticism. In Study 2 ( N = 77), receivers of concrete criticism from an out-group representative attributed less hostile intentions and prejudice to the critic, and this mediated the impact of critic group membership and linguistic abstraction on negativity toward criticism. Participants also reported more favorable attitudes toward the out-group as a whole when out-group criticism was formulated in concrete terms. This research underlines that linguistic abstraction can facilitate or obstruct effective group communication, and has important implications for the development of communicative strategies aiming to promote social change.

People with ADHD are at high risk of receiving criticism from others, yet criticism has not been well researched in this population. This study aimed to provide a rich understanding of what experiences adults with ADHD traits have with criticism. As part of a larger study, 162 participants with ADHD and high ADHD traits provided a written response to an open question asking about their experiences of criticism from other people. Thematic analysis was used to identify five common themes in the responses. Behaviours associated with inattention were perceived as the most criticised, whilst impulsive behaviours were mostly criticised in social contexts. Criticism was perceived via numerous conducts and was reported to have negative consequences for self-worth and wellbeing. To cope, some participants avoided criticism or changed how they reacted, including trying to accept themselves as they are. The responses indicated that receiving understanding from others played an important role in whether criticism was perceived. Overall, the findings highlight the need for more knowledge, understanding and acceptance towards neurodiversity from the general population.

To have the right and possibility to criticize religions in public life is crucial for developing a healthy liberal democratic society. However, this criticism could take many different forms with respect to who offers the criticism, on what grounds it is based, its aim, what the target of the criticism is, and whom the critics try to convince. In this article, I develop a theoretical framework we can use to distinguish and assess different forms of criticism, focusing primarily on secular criticism of religion. Furthermore, I argue that in performing such a meta-study of criticism, it is vital that we reflect more carefully on how to develop plausible ethics of criticism. Finally, by comparing public criticism and academic criticism, I show that such ethics must be developed in a way that is sensitive to discourse.

AbstractExtant studies suggest that criticism of state practices may create ontological crises in states, thus prompting emotional responses. This article examines what happens when target states reject external criticism, and the failure of outside attempts to shame and criticise. We show that recipients can view international criticism as opportunities to consolidate state identity rather than ontological crises. Using Turkey’s foreign policy towards Israel, we focus on the agency of weak states by expanding the range of emotions stemming from non-acceptance of criticism and by emphasising the role of leaders when crafting emotional responses to negative representations.

Introduction. Citation is the main indicator in research performance evaluation using the quantitative approach. There have been many criticisms of citations since they were used half a century ago, but they have not yet succeeded in bringing new concepts and methods. This paper aims to criticize and propose a new approach to citation analysis. Data Collection Method. A contemporary critical theory methodology was adopted as a framework to collect and analyze the data. Scientific publications related to citation analysis was collected from several databases such as Google scholar, Microsoft academic search, dan Garuda Ristekdikti. Analysis Data. Publications data were critically reviewed and analyzed narratively by using open coding. Results and Discussions. The results mapped the lack of citation analysis form various aspects: (1) criticism of the positivist paradigm which did not succeed in achieving its objectives, (2) criticism of methods that produce invalid results, and (3) criticism of ethical issues of the researcher and bias in implementation. The proposed solution and recommendation is to change the citation analysis method from a simple measurement of bibliographic data to text and context analysis based on a computer science approach (machine learning techniques). Conclusion. This new method has the potential to be developed within the framework of quantitative in Science and Technology studies to overcome existing criticisms. Subsequent multidisciplinary studies are needed to lay a strong philosophical and technical foundation particularly in applying the in-text citation analysis method for evaluating research performance in accordance with the Indonesian context.

Michael J. Almeida offers two criticisms of the argument of my ‘A trilemma for divine command theory’. The first criticism is that I mistakenly assume the validity of the following inference pattern: property A is identical to property B; property B supervenes on property C; therefore, property A supervenes on property C. The second criticism is that I have misinterpreted the moral-supervenience thesis upon which I rely in making this argument. The first of Almeida's criticisms is completely untenable. The second of his criticisms casts doubt on my argument, a doubt that I can mitigate but not entirely dispel.

Music education inherently relies on a process of providing and receiving critical feedback. Students who are very sensitive to criticism, however, may present a unique challenge for the music educator. This study investigated the ways in which sensitivity to criticism affects the educational experience of music students. Nineteen students were assessed for sensitivity to criticism, self-reported motivation, and perceived quality of performance early and late in the semester. High scores on the Sensitivity to Criticism Scale (Atlas, 1994) were associated with decreases in ratings of importance of the activity and mildly connected with decreases in enjoyment and confidence levels. Highly sensitive students were more hurt by their instructors’ criticisms, felt they improved less in response to criticism, and found it more difficult to communicate with the instructor following criticism. These results suggest that being sensitive to criticism can have an impact on music students’ motivation and performance – and that instructors should be particularly careful in considering the effects that critical feedback may have on highly sensitive students.

I begin here by discussing the role of Leibniz in historical thought, particularly in Frank Ankersmit’s representationalist philosophy of historiography. I then discuss Jouni-Matti Kuukkanen’s recent criticism of Ankersmit’s commitment to holism about the semantics of historiography. I argue that the criticism fails because Kuukkanen is not sufficiently sensitive to the Leibnizian foundation of Ankersmit’s holism. Ankersmit can absorb Kuukkanen’s criticisms into his Leibnizism. I conclude by suggesting that the philosophy of historiography needs to be connected to substantial projects in the philosophical criticism of historiography.

Criticism, as an evaluative criterion, is a significant speech act for English language learners to improve their speech and actions in their academic life. Yet, it is realized differently across diverse cultures. Few studies have shown that the linguistics forms of one language are different from those available in another language. Hence, this study aims to investigate the cross-cultural similarities and differences between 60 Iraqi and Malay university learners in the use of criticism strategies. The data are collected using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and a Focus Group Interview (FGI). The data are coded based on Nguyen’s (2005) coding scheme of criticism in terms of the realization strategies. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are used in the analysis of data. The findings evidently uncover that both groups use similar categories of criticism strategies, but Iraqis use more direct criticisms than Malays who opt for indirectness in their criticisms. Finally, some pedagogical implications for teachers of English as a second or foreign language are provided in this study.

Drawing on a corpus-based approach, this paper explores the mitigation strategies used to soften criticism in English and Italian book review articles in the disciplinary field of linguistics. Most corpus-based analyses on academic criticism have focused on the use and function of politeness strategies in English academic review genres, mainly book reviews. Recently, an increasing number of studies on academic book reviews have examined the issue from a cross-cultural perspective. This study attempts to contribute to the area of cross-cultural research on reviewing practices by exploring how criticisms are managed in a somewhat neglected review genre in academic discourse studies – the book review article. Criticisms will be identified on the basis of their lexico-grammatical features and further categorized into “direct” and “mitigated” (Itakura & Tsui 2011, 1369). The mitigation strategies identified in both language corpora mainly involve the use of sequences of speech acts such as praise-criticism, criticism-praise, criticism-suggestion, praise-suggestion, and hedging. However, their distributions reveal differences in the two languages. While praise is prominently used in both English and Italian book review articles, Italian-speaking linguistics reviewers employ a lower proportion of hedges than their English-speaking colleagues and are more likely to opt for suggestions as a form of indirect criticism. The results demonstrate that linguistics reviewers writing in English and Italian deploy a considerable range of linguistic devices when expressing mitigated criticism of peers. Their use and distribution are discussed in relation to national/cultural writing conventions, but also differences between “large” and “small” disciplinary cultures (Holliday 1999). Some implications for EAP learners and practitioners are also considered.

This article surveys Hanslick’s statements about the purpose and practice of criticism to argue that he viewed music criticism as a medium with the potential to effect political and social change, and not as a practical application of aesthetic principles. Hanslick took up the Enlightenment model of criticism—–which stressed the critic’s role in fostering the public’s independence of judgment through the exercise of reason—–and adapted it to the historical circumstances of post-1848 Vienna. The Enlightenment model had originated from an impetus to emancipate a civil public from top-down, absolute forms of authority. It resonated powerfully with Hanslick because he believed that artistic, social, and political life in Vienna after 1848 was gradually liberating itself from the paralyzing, passive, and repressive ethos of Vormärz, and that the critic could contribute to this historical emancipation. Hanslick thus broke his earlier identification with the Left Hegelian “philosophical” model of criticism, which did not share the Enlightenment’s optimistic conception of the public sphere. His commitment to the critic's public mission manifested as an effort to position his voice as the “silent” inner conscience of the average educated listener. His self-consciousness about aligning his voice with that of the public came to the surface in reviews where his opinion did not match the audience response. Many of Hanslick’s criteria for musical judgment were aimed at defending the listener’s freedom from the interference of external critical authorities as well as from composers and whose musical ideas were turgid or unclear. In service to these freedoms he was willing to criticize composers such as Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms, as well as conservative classicists and music historians.

Abstract Bernard Bolzano criticised Kant's philosophy so vehemently that his pupil Franz Prihonsky called him "Anti-Kant". One of his criticisms concerns Kant's cosmological antinomies. The context of this critique is the problem of limits of knowledge. Kant wanted to prove that there are such boundaries, and to show where these are located. In this paper we will (i) schematize Kant's antinomies (to see what Bolzano really criticised on them) and (ii) summarize Bolzano's criticism, which is distributed over his and his student's work. At the beginning we will work out the (more fundamental) theoretical differences between Kant's and Bolzano's philosophy to see what roles these play in the construction of the antinomies.

AbstractAn assessment is made of Rudolf Otto's criticisms of Friedrich Schleiermacher's claim that religious feeling is to be interpreted as essentially involving a feeling of absolute dependence. Otto's criticisms are divided into two kinds. The first suggest that a feeling a dependence, even an absolute one, is the wrong sort of feeling to locate at the heart of religious consciousness. It is argued that this criticism is based on misinterpretations of Schleiermacher's view, which is in fact much closer to Otto's than the latter appreciated. The second kind of criticism suggests that the feeling of absolute dependence cannot play the foundational role assigned to it by Schleiermacher, since it is itself a secondary response. It is argued not only that Otto provides no justification for this criticism, but that Otto's own position is incoherent unless Schleiermacher's view is accepted.

The recent growth of character education worldwide has met with a number of criticisms. This article applies a humanities methodology to investigate three of these criticisms in the belief that a growing movement can only benefit from attention to its critics. The first criticism is that character education depends on flawed or unreliable social science methods. In response, the article recommends more focused attention on the philosophical foundations of empirical research on character. The second criticism is that character education leaves unjust systems unchallenged. In response, the article recommends increased academic dialogue between character education discourse and social justice discourse. The third criticism is that character education violates the purpose of a university. In response, the article denies the objection, appealing to historical and philosophical sources to argue that character has been and should be at the heart of all Higher Education.

The text “Dance Criticism: The Criticism of Crisis” thinks about the situation and role of dance criticism. The initial thesis of the text concerns itself with the misguidedness of dance criticism, which does not recognize the fact that contemporary dance is in crisis, but rather treats its subject as given. The text suspects that dance criticism – despite clear evidence of its confusion – still knows what dance is. Simultaneously, the text battles against the view that dance criticism should report on the quality of performances. It attempts to lay this view to rest and develops a different perspective, elevating dance criticism as the companion of the historical moment, the philosophical co-traveller of dance. The author hopes for different, dialectical and slippery critical forms and content.

The return of the institution of administrative prejudice into Russian criminal law in 2011 caused a flurry of criticism, roughly repeating in material and legal terms the criticism to which the institution was subjected in the late Soviet and early post-Soviet years, which then led to its abolition. Today, procedural criticism has also been added to it. At the same time, the legislator continues to develop administrative prejudice, which leads to a gap between normative existence and doctrinal assessments of the institution. How adequate are its substantive and procedural criticisms? The question is not simple and requires special analysis.

Among the prominent aspects of our experience of time is its asymmetry which can be pointed at by using somewhat vague notions of fixity of the past and openness of the future. Among the influential attempts to explain this asymmetry is an analysis by David Lewis, based on his influential similarity semantic analysis of counterfactual conditionals. I examine Lewis? attempt and criticisms it was exposed to in the literature. By focusing on the criticism by Penelope Mackie, I show that Lewis? analysis can be fortified in a way consistent with his basic project so that it withstands the examined criticisms. However, one important consequence of this fortification is that its success depends on his counterfactual theory of causation. This means that every (successful) criticism of Lewis? theory of causation is a fortiori a (successful) criticism of his analysis of the relevant asymmetry of time.

One class dominates or is supported across numerous social aspects in hegemony. This study used critical discourse analysis to analyze data. This research aimed to analyze social hegemony in Indonesian literary criticism course materials. Thus, this study formulated problems as follows. (1) Social hegemony in Indonesian literary criticism course materials. (2) Persuasive cultural hegemony in Indonesian literary criticism course materials (3) Power hegemony in Indonesian literary criticism textbooks. In Indonesian literary criticism course materials, discursive practices, social identity, and social interaction are dialectical. Literary discourse is examined from three angles: the text, discourse practices, and the socio-cultural setting. Literary discourse as a manifestation of social interaction, its ability to regulate or manipulate behavior and material existence, and its role in establishing and maintaining power, status, and social roles are examined in the context of social hegemony. Critical examination of literary discourse in Indonesian literary criticism course materials is possible by considering cultural hegemony. According to the first assumption, symbols create meaning. b) Indonesian literary criticism textbooks link knowledge to values. Indonesian literary criticism course materials include cultural discourse from several fields. The hegemony of power is examined in Indonesian literary criticism course materials. a) Authority affects daily life. Power is coercive. Indonesian literary criticism course materials allow readers to criticize and disrupt social, cultural, and authority systems through literary discourse.

Embedded criticism as another way to write performing arts criticism in Indonesia. This paper performs a re-examining of performing arts criticism in Indonesia, particularly about a critic-artist relationship. The modern tradition of criticism has built a hierarchy in the performing arts ecosystem. It happened in any tradition of criticism and has been living in Indonesia for more than 50 years. Instead of it has lived in print media, for instance, newspapers and magazines, the relationship also happens on the Indonesian website. In fact, traditional performing arts in Indonesia were connected by a good relationship between a critic—for instance, a teacher or influential person—and an artist. It means the critic has access to watch a rehearsal, has a good chit-chat with an artist, can talk about the idea of the performance, and so on; it is not like the West critic, who was watching only the performance. The paper aims at presenting the other way of writing criticism, not only as an option of ways of writing but also providing the idea of a reciprocal relationship and renders less hierarchal the critic-artist relationship. As explained, this paper would like to discuss embedded criticism, the other way of criticism that attempted showing the relation between critic and artist as a productive work. Writing an embedded criticism describes a critic's duty that is not about judging the performance but also articulating the production and performance complexity. This paper would like to ask, how does critic presenting the criticism accommodates the relation between them? How can the embedded criticism apply to performing arts criticsm in Indonesia? Those questions will be answered by a literature study. The result of this research is that embedded criticism can be solved the gap problem of criticism—emphasizing the relationship between critic and artist in traditional performing arts, that undisclosed in the modern tradition of critic—through a website that disseminates performing art criticism.
