An expressing media with literature work could indirectly convey various social criticisms toward a certain phenomenon. The most frequently occurring social criticism is the social reality portrayal of a community. This study aims to describe the form of social criticism contained in the poetry entitled Rahi(i)m by Kedung Darma Romansha. Using qualitative methods and a literary sociology approach, especially social criticism, this study reveals the author's worldview of phenomena that occur in society. The study results show that the author of poetry criticises social situations, namely: the author's criticism of poverty, crime, family disharmony, juvenile delinquency, violation of norms, and environmental problems. Social criticism also reveals the author's disappointment, annoyance, anger, and regret towards the arrogant and unfair performance of government officials in responding to socio-cultural problems that occur in society.

Interviews with participants in the decision-making processes for major installations in six western European countries reveal criticism of the procedures from all sides. In particular, environmental impact assessments were criticised for their lack of independence from the proposer, failure to assess alternatives to the proposal adequately, incomprehensibility to lay-people and failure to consider social factors. There was also criticism of general lack of public involvement in the decision-making process. Consideration of these criticisms lends support to calls for revision of the European directives on environmental impact assessment and their implementation in national laws.

Theres many ways can be done to appreciate the voices of messages and criticisms through creative ways, one of them through comics. One of the Indonesian comic artists who used comics as a medium of social criticism was Haryadhi through his "Komik Strip Untuk Umum (KOSTUM)” creation. KOSTUM Comics record the events that are happening and pour them into comic strips spread through social media. This research is a qualitative descriptive type using Roland Barthes' semiotics theory with two-stage significance (two orders of signification). From the results of the study, researchers found the implicit meaning that is to criticize and satirize the behavior of Indonesian people in a subtle way. Criticism expressed to comics is directed directly at the actors but is delicately wrapped with humorous portrayals through their characters. From the KOSTUM comics examined can be concluded that the social criticism described in the comic is an expression of the condition of the community related to the values that are used as a guideline for living in community groups. Keywords: Comics, Social Criticism, Semiotics, Roland Barthes

A discussion about a proper woman always includes the discussion of the concept of separate spheres. In Victorian Age for instance, a proper woman is perfectly described by the term Angel in the House. Seventeenth century Netherlands also expected the same thing for women in that era. The concept of separate spheres along with its expectations of womens proper roles is an example of social construction of gender which defines women. This study is conducted to reveal the criticisms towards the idea of proper woman in The Miniaturist. The results of this study are: first, women who are considered proper by the society in The Miniaturist have two roles, which are being a wife and being a mother. Moreover, women are also expected to have five characteristics: obedient, powerless, submissive, dependent, and domesticated. Second, The Miniaturist, using the setting in the 17th century Netherlands as a tool to criticize people in the 21st century, tries to redefine the way society thinks, including women, about womens life. The criticisms found in the novel cover four things: criticism towards womens expected roles; criticism towards womens obedience; criticism towards womens powerlessness, submissiveness, and dependence; and criticism towards womens domestication. The text tries to make women more aware of their own value. Women are also suggested to have self-dominion over themselves, and be more critical, independent, and tougher. Societys mindset regarding womens value and capability in the present time is also redefined. The most important thing is the text tries to make people in the 21st century understand women as individuals or persons who have their own right and independence. Keywords: criticism, proper woman

Abstract Rhetorical criticism in Old Testament studies—indeed, in biblical studies in general—had its origins in a self-conscious way in 1968, when James Muilenburg issued his now-famous call to go beyond form criticism and focus upon the unique features of a text. Since then, biblical rhetorical criticisms have flourished. However, in Old Testament studies, rhetorical criticism has tended to be primarily a literary concern, with emphasis upon stylistics. Classical and contemporary rhetorical criticisms are very different, however. These focus particularly upon the suasive aspects of spoken discourse. This paper reviews the history of rhetorical criticism in Old Testament studies and in the field of speech and rhetoric, comparing and contrasting approaches. It then issues a call to biblical scholars to practice a truly "rhetorical" criticism, based upon speech and persuasion.

Resumo:
The Institutio Oratoria of Quintilian (Marcus Fabius Quintilianus) is a work that follows in a tradition of writing on rhetoric, a tradition that dates back to the fifth century B.C. My thesis establishes Quintilian and his work within this tradition, and encourages the reader both to consider one aspect of the convention of technical instruction in rhetoric, namely criticism, and to reflect on the originality of criticism in Quintilian's work. Accordingly, I have two main aims. Firstly, I intend to give full detail of examples of criticism in the Institutio Oratoria, and this will include identifying, where possible, people who are targeted by Quintilian for criticism. Thus, in detailing examples - which I do by paraphrase and translation - and assigning them to chapters in this thesis, I follow the structure that Quintilian provides for his work in the preface to his first book. Targets of criticism include groups, such as parents, pupils, teachers, philosophers, actors, dancers, and specific individuals. My second aim is to assess the originality of Quintilian's criticism. Thus, I examine the works of predecessors, notably, but not exclusively, other writers on rhetoric, whose works are extant or partly extant. My feelings indicate that there is much criticism that can serve as precedent for criticism in the Institutio Oratoria. However, it is evident that Quintilian has not indulged in mere repetition. He has changed and adapted criticisms in a way that reflects his educational and forensic background. He also implies that many of these still relate to his own time. I have also found that much criticism lacks apparent precedent - apparent, because other works on rhetoric that precede the Institutio Oratoria and have not survived could feasibly have provided precedents for criticisms in Quintilian's work that appear novel - and I suggest that the underlying intention of this is to relate practice more closely to theory, and theory more closely to practice.

Previous research has shown that individuals with disordered eating patterns who come from a family that is high in Expressed Emotion tend to have more disordered eating behaviors and over a longer period of time. There is less research on how a person’s perception of their family’s expressed emotion, specifically the criticism directed at them by a parental figure, affects their disordered eating patterns. The purpose of this research was to examine whether there is a relationship between perceived criticism and disordered eating patterns, as well as whether this relationship is influenced by self-criticism. One hundred and five undergraduate college students participated in an online survey that measured perceived criticism, their self-criticism, and their disordered eating behaviors and thoughts. The results suggest that levels of perceived criticism and disordered eating behaviors and thoughts were not related to each other. However, an individual’s perception of parental self-criticism was related to their level of self-criticism. Their level of self-criticism in turn was related to their disordered eating behaviors and thoughts, demonstrating an indirect relationship between perceived criticism and disordered eating patterns. These findings offer some potential areas of consideration for clinicians treating clients with disordered eating behaviors.

The paper deals with the exile view of Czech literary criticism in the past decades, reflected in two essays: one by Igor Hajek, and the other one by Kvetoslav Chvatik. Igor Hajek (19311995), a Czech literary critic, who went to exile in 1969, played a significant role in presenting Czech literature abroad. Kvetoslav Chvatik (19302012) was a Czech philosopher, aesthetician, art historian, and literary theorist. Hajek taught at universities in the English-speaking world, while Chvatik worked in a German-speaking environment. Two periods are covered and compared in the paper: the first period, the period of pluralistic democracy and the resulting cultural structure when the literary criticism contributed to the fact that Czech literature reached the European level, and the period after February 1948 when the ruling ideology started to interfere in the development of literature. Two completely contradictory conceptions are described showing the radical changes that took place in literary criticism after 1948. The text looks at the role of literary criticism in an era when plurality of opinion is possible, and at the impact of the suppression of freedom of speech on the work of literary critics. It also shows how the process of the shift of literary criticism towards its true function in the spirit of democratising tendencies had gradually won its way.

Resumo:
This working paper discusses "Safer Commune" - a neighbourhood crime prevention program in Chile that has come under criticism via evidence of rising crime rates and fear of crime in municipalities with the program. The author argues that this criticism is incorrect and shows empirical evidence that the crime rates that would have been observed without the program. This impact evaluation -using the double difference propensity score method- reveals that the program has reduced high crimes particularly of two types of crimes namely battery and theft. The author shows that active participation in the program by local residents has reduced insecurity and increased security; but with very low active participation in the program the scale of the effect is low. Positive evaluative findings suggest that an expansion of the program and simultaneously enhancing co-production of order through mechanisms to encourage local resident participation would have high returns.

These words of John Lewis represent a scathing criticism of the contemporary failures of the United States, the oldest and possibly most vibrant democratic nation-state in the world. The words also express a deep disappointment that the principles of equality and justice enshrined in the US constitution have been honored more in the breach when they pertain to African-Americans, many of whose ancestors arrived on these shores long before those of their Euro-American compatriots.
