Resumen: El presente artículo pretende realizar una aproximación entre los pensamientos éticos de Kant y Kierkegaard concentrándonos en los conceptos de educación y libertad. Para ello pondremos foco en el pensamiento práctico desarrollado por el filósofo alemán en el año 1790, al cual denominamos la segunda ética kantiana, y en la primera autoría kierkegaardiana, es decir, O lo uno o lo otro (1843) y El concepto de angustia (1844). Consideramos que estos dos periodos, en ambos autores, nos brindan la posibilidad de encontrar puntos de contactos que nos permiten sostener que la ética que Kierkegaard tiene en mente para estas obras es el pensamiento moral desarrollado por Kant en este periodo.Palabras claves: Kant. ÉticaAbstract: The present article intends to make an approximation between the ethical thoughts of Kant and Kierkegaard concentrating on the concepts of education and freedom. For this we will focus on the practical thought developed by the German philosopher in the year 1790, which we call the second Kantian ethic, and in the first Kierkegaardian authorship, that is, Either/Or (1843) and The Concept of Anxiety (1844). We consider that these two periods, in both authors, give us the possibility of finding points of contact that allow us to maintain that the ethics that Kierkegaard has in mind for these works is the moral thought developed by Kant in this period.Keywords: Kant. A different name than English literature, ‘Anglo-Indian Literature’, was given to the body of literature in English that emerged on account of the British interaction with India unlike the case with their interaction with America or Australia or New Zealand. Even the Indians’ contributions (translations as well as creative pieces in English) were classed under the caption ‘Anglo-Indian’ initially but later a different name, ‘Indo-Anglian’, was conceived for the growing variety and volume of writings in English by the Indians. However, unlike the former the latter has not found a favour with the compilers of English dictionaries. With the passage of time the fine line of demarcation drawn on the basis of subject matter and author’s point of view has disappeared and currently even Anglo-Indians’ writings are classed as ‘Indo-Anglian’. Besides contemplating on various connotations of the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ the article discusses the related issues such as: the etymology of the term, fixing the name of its coiner and the date of its first use. In contrast to the opinions of the historians and critics like K R S Iyengar, G P Sarma, M K Naik, Daniela Rogobete, Sachidananda Mohanty, Dilip Chatterjee and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak it has been brought to light that the term ‘Indo-Anglian’ was first used in 1880 by James Payn to refer to the Indians’ writings in English rather pejoratively. However, Iyengar used it in a positive sense though he himself gave it up soon. The reasons for the wide acceptance of the term, sometimes also for the authors of the sub-continent, by the members of academia all over the world, despite its rejection by Sahitya Akademi (the national body of letters in India), have also been contemplated on. The Charipinae (Cynipoidea: Figitidae) are a small group of Hymenoptera biologically characterized as being secondary parasitoids of aphids and psyllids (Hemiptera) (Menke & Evenhuis, 1991). A total of 281 species of Charipinae have been described since the first species was described by Westwood (1833) (including two fossils, one of them recently transferred in a new family, Protimaspidae). An updated world catalogue of the Charipinae is presented here, with 168 valid species: 111 included in Alloxysta Förster, 31 in Phaenoglyphis Förster, 13 in Dilyta Förster, 5 in Apocharips Fergusson, 4 in Thoreauana Girault, and 1 in Dilapothor Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, Lobopterocharips Paretas-Martínez & Pujade-Villar, Lytoxysta Kieffer and †Protocharips Kovalev. Eight species are considered as nomen nudum: Allotria fusca Dahlbom, 1842; Allotria thoreyi Dahlbom, 1842; Xystus xanthocephala Dahlbom, 1842; Allotria pusillina Giraud, 1877; Charips aphidiinaecida de Santis, 1937; Alloxysta keudelli Hedicke, 1927; Allotria amygdali Buckton, 1879 and Allotria polita Provancher, 1881. Six as nomen dubium: Allotria (Allotria) recticornis atra Kieffer, 1902; Allotria (Allotria) brevicornis Kieffer, 1902; Allotria (Allotria) orthocera Kieffer, 1902; Xystus femoralis Hartig, 1841; Charipsella laevigata Brèthes, 1913; Dilyta (Alloxysta) ignorata Kieffer, 1900. Three species are incertae sedis: Charips silvicola Belizin, 1928, Cynips atriceps Buckton, 1879 and Allotria (Allotria) testaceipes Kieffer, 1902. Two species are here synonymized: Alloxysta discreta (Förster, 1869) with A. ramulifera (Thomson, 1862) and A. megaptera (Cameron, 1889) with A. ruficollis (Cameron, 1883). Two species are raised from synonymy and considered here as valid species: Alloxysta cameroni (Cameron, 1883) and A. marshalliana (Kieffer, 1900). New names for species of Alloxysta are presented for homonimies with other Alloxysta species derived from the new combinations: Alloxysta ionescui Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta luteipes (Ionescu, 1969) n. comb., Alloxysta forshagei Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta bicolor (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb., and Alloxysta mattiasi Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Alloxysta luteipes (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb. Also a new name to Phaenoglyphis is presented for the same reason before mentioned but without new combination: Phaenoglyphis hedickei Pujade-Villar & Ferrer-Suay new name for Phaenoglyphis longicornis Hedicke, 1928 and two new combinations are presented: Alloxysta rufa (Ionescu, 1959) n. comb and Alloxysta consobrina (Zetterstedt, 1838) Forshage n. comb. This catalogue includes: (i) a diagnosis of the subfamily with the most important taxonomic characters for species recognition, and illustrations of these characters; (ii) a key to genera; (iii) a list of all authors describing species of Charipinae; and (iv) a host table. The distribution of the Charipinae includes 106 Palaearctic species, 37 Nearctic, 11 Neotropical, 10 Afrotropical, 7 Oriental and 11 Australian. The species Alloxysta victrix (Westwood, 1833), A. fuscicornis (Hartig, 1841) and Phaenoglyphis villosa (Hartig, 1841) are cosmopolitan.

The robust crazy ant, Nylanderia bourbonica (Forel) (formerly Paratrechina bourbonica), is native to the Old-World tropics and subtropics. Its earliest known record in the New World was collected in 1924 in Miami, Florida. Here, I examine the subsequent spread of this species to other parts of North America and the West Indies. I compiled published and unpublished New World N. bourbonica specimen records from 446 sites, documenting the earliest known records for 24 geographic areas (countries, island groups, major islands, and US states), including nine for which I found no previously published records: Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos Islands, Missouri, New York, and Washington. The vast majority of New World site records for N. bourbonica (89%) come from Florida, where this species is now known from 37 counties. Most, if not all, of the 14 site records of N. bourbonica in North American north of 30.5°N come from indoors. Although the earliest record of N. bourbonica from Cuba dates to 1933, the spread of N. bourbonica to many West Indian islands appears to be much more recent. In Florida, N. bourbonica is a widespread, though relatively minor household and agricultural pest, and also is common in some more natural environments. It remains to be seen whether N. bourbonica will become a significant pest in the West Indies or elsewhere in the New World.

A reclassification of several species traditionally included in Rhantus Dejean, 1833 is given: Nartus Zaitzev, 1907 is re-instated as genus with one species in the Nearctic and one in the Palaearctic region; two new genera are erected: Meri-diorhantus n. gen., with M. antarcticus (Germain, 1854) n. comb., M. calidus (Fabricius, 1792) n. comb., M. limbatus (Aubé, 1838) n. comb., M. orbignyi (Balke, 1992) n. comb., M. validus (Sharp, 1882) n. comb. in the Neotropical region (M. calidus also in the southern USA and along the eastern coast as far north as New York City), and the monotypic Caperhantus n. gen., with C. cicurius (Fabricius, 1787) n. comb. in south Africa. Furthermore, nine Pacific and Australian Rhantus are transferred to the genus Carabdytes Balke, Hendrich & Wewalka, 1992: C. alutaceus (Fauvel, 1883) n. comb., C. guadalcanalensis (Balke, 1998) n. comb., C. monteithi (Balke, Wewalka, Alarie & Ribera, 2007) n. comb., C. novaecaledoniae (J. Balfour-Browne, 1944) n. comb., C. oceanicus (Balke, 1993b) n. comb., C. pacificus (Boisduval, 1835) n. comb., C. plantaris (Sharp, 1882) n. comb., C. poellerbauerae (Balke, Wewalka, Alarie & Ribera, 2007) n. comb. and C. pseudopacificus Balke, 1993b) n. comb. All changes are based on a previous comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis of Colymbetinae. Diagnostic characters are given for all genera mentioned above and each of them is illustrated with one or more habitus pictures. An updated key to all genera of Colymbetinae is also given.

Electron interference has been investigated at an industrial laboratory of Hitachi, Ltd. for the past 30 years thanks to the encouragement and support of C. N. Yang, who retired from the State University of New York in 1999. This paper reports here fundamentals and applications of electron interference experiments we have carried out including our relation to C. N. Yang, and is based on a talk made in honor of him at the "Symmetries and Reflections" Symposium held at Stony Brook in May 1999.

The members of Coccinellidae are among the most important biological control agents being used throughout the world. The objective of this study was to provide the current scenario of this family in Saudi Arabia. Collection surveys of ladybird individuals were conducted throughout Saudi Arabia. A total of 5400 specimens of Coccinellidae were collected belonging to 51 species in 19 genera and seven tribes: Sticholotidini (2 genera / 10 species), Coccidulini (1/3), Scymnini (4/24), Diomini (1/1), Hyperaspidini (1/3), Chilocorini (3/8), Noviini (1/3), Coccinellini (8/11), Epilachnini (2/2). One genus, Clitostethus, and eight species and subspecies, Cheilomenes lunata lunata (Fabricius, 1775), Clitostethus arcuatus (Rossi, 1794), Nephus ornatulus Korschefsky, 1931, N. nigricans (Weise, 1879), Pharoscymnus fleischeri (Weise, 1883), Novius yemenensis Raimundo & Fürsch, 2006, Scymnus (Scymnus) scapuliferus Mulsant, 1850, and Stethorus endrodyi Fürsch, 1970, are reported as new records to Saudi Arabia. Two endemic species, Scymnus agrumi and S. arabicus, were recorded. This study also describes the geographical distribution for each species and the diagnostic characters for new records.

A prominent Russian mathematician Nikolai Nikolaevich Luzin (1883– 1950) lived in a very difficult period of Russian history: two world wars, two 1917 revolutions in Russia, the Bolsheviks’ coming to power, the Civil War of 1917–1922, and the construction of a new type of state, accompanied by mass terror that impacted all the strata of Soviet society. It was against the backdrop of these dramatic events that the process of Luzin’s formation and flourishing as a scientist and founder of one of the leading mathematical schools of the 20th century, the Moscow school of function theory that became one of the cornerstones in the foundation of the Soviet mathematical school, took place. Two periods can be distinguished in Luzin’s work: the first period was devoted to the problems of the metric theory of functions and culminated in his famous dissertation “The Integral and the Trigonometric Series” (1915), and the second period was mainly devoted to the development of problems in the theory of analytic sets. The implication of Luzin’s research was the problem of the structure of the arithmetic continuum that became the ultimate purpose of his work. Fortune favored the scientist: the complicated turns of history he happened to be involved in did not hinder, and sometimes even facilitated, the successful development of his studies. Even the catastrophe that descended upon him in 1936, “the case of Academician Luzin,” even though it had put an end to the normal development of his creative thought, ended with a smoothest possible outcome for him.

We examined the all-cause and COVID-19-specific mortality among World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR) enrollees. We also examined the socioeconomic factors associated with COVID-19-specific death. Mortality data from the NYC Bureau of Vital Statistics between 2015–2020 were linked to the WTCHR. COVID-19-specific death was defined as having positive COVID-19 tests that match to a death certificate or COVID-19 mentioned on the death certificate via text searching. We conducted step change and pulse regression to assess excess deaths. Limiting to those who died in 2019 (n = 210) and 2020 (n = 286), we examined factors associated with COVID-19-specific deaths using multinomial logistic regression. Death rate among WTCHR enrollees increased during the pandemic (RR: 1.70, 95% CL: 1.25–2.32), driven by the pulse in March–April 2020 (RR: 3.38, 95% CL: 2.62–4.30). No significantly increased death rate was observed during May–December 2020. Being non-Hispanic Black and having at least one co-morbidity had a higher likelihood of COVID-19-associated mortality than being non-Hispanic White and not having any co-morbidity (AOR: 2.43, 95%CL: 1.23–4.77; AOR: 2.86, 95%CL: 1.19–6.88, respectively). The racial disparity in COVID-19-specific deaths attenuated after including neighborhood proportion of essential workers in the model (AOR:1.98, 95%CL: 0.98–4.01). Racial disparities continue to impact mortality by differential occupational exposure and structural inequality in neighborhood representation. The WTC-exposed population are no exception. Continued efforts to reduce transmission risk in communities of color is crucial for addressing health inequities.

Background: With the highest number of cases in the world as of April 13, 2020, New York City (NYC) became the epicenter of the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The data regarding palliative team involvement in patients with COVID-19, however, remains scarce. We aimed to investigate outcomes of palliative team involvement for the patients with COVID-19 in NYC. Methods: Consecutive 225 patients with confirmed COVID-19 requiring hospitalization in our urban academic medical center in NYC were analyzed. Patients were divided into 2 groups, those with a palliative care consult (palliative group: 14.2% [n = 32]) versus those with no palliative care consult (no palliative group: 85.8% [n = 193]). Results: The palliative group was older and had more comorbidities. During the hospital course, the palliative group had more intensive care unit stays, rapid response team activations, and more use of vasopressors ( P < .05). Patients with palliative care had higher rates of invasive mechanical ventilation than those without (46.9% vs 10.4%, P < .001). Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed in 12 patients (6.5% vs 5.2%, P = .77) and death rate was 100% in both subsets. Notably, initial code status was not different between the 2 groups, however, code status at discharge was significantly different between them ( P < .001). The rate of full code decreased by 70% in the palliative group and by 47.5% in the no palliative care group from admission to the time of death. Conclusions: Critically ill patients hospitalized for COVID-19 benefit from palliative team consults by helping to clarify advanced directives and minimize futile resuscitative efforts.

Abstract We know clearly that we live in a global world today, and we are also pretty certain that the pre-modern period would be better understood if we approached it with a global perspective, as problematic as it certainly might be. The Americas and Australia, but also many parts of Africa and northern Asia were completely unknown to most Europeans and vice versa. But there were economic ties throughout time, and the Christian Church made many efforts already in the Middle Ages to missionize far beyond the confines of Europe. The Vikings were truly global operators during the height of their activities well to the tenth and maybe even eleventh centuries, and we also ought to incorporate the Jews as global players. Ironically, even the history of pandemics, such as the Justinian plague (541–549) and the Black Death (1347–1351), were explicit indicators of global connections.

The aim of the study is to consider feminist retellings of myths and legends. As an example, Margaret Atwood’s book The Penelopiad is analyzed. The interpretation is situated in a broader context of intertextual practices characteristic of the feminist vision of literature. I present the ideas which Atwood shares with authors engaged in women’s movement. Among these there is Atwood’s understanding of intertextuality (noticeable especially in The Penelopiad). This article reflects the analysis of the editions of Haydar Khorazmi’s masnavi “Gulshan ul-asrar”. There are manuscript copies of the work all over the world. Including Istanbul, New York, Paris, Tehran, Kazan, Vienna, Tbilisi and other places. The editors prepared the edition of the work based on these manuscripts. The first printed editions of the work were made in the 19th century in the city of Kazan. Later, it was published in Uzbekistan by the 20th century and by Turkish scientists at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st c e n t u r y. D i f f e r e n t a n d similar aspects of these publications were studied in the research.

The new edition of E. Pound's poetic collection Cathay, first published in 1915, shows the idea of world literature to be as real as it is problematic. Thanks to T. Billings, the editor behind the publication, the book offers the most exhaustive description of the process whereby the translations were created: it involved not only Pound and Fenollosa, but also K. Mori and N. Ariga, who represent the Japanese tradition of reading classical Chinese poetry. The volume contains almost all of Pound's Chinese translations produced in the 1910s, his essay ‘Chinese Poetry,' as well as an impressive scholarly corpus: articles on the significance of these translations in the era of close relations between China and the West, extracts from Fenollosa's notebooks deciphered by Billings, and the original Chinese poems, each supplied with comments. The reconstruction of the process by which word-for-word translations were created puts Pound's translation effort into a new perspective.

Three cohorts including the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTCHR), and the General Responder Cohort (GRC), each funded by the World Trade Center Health Program have reported associations between WTC-exposures and cancer. Results have generally been consistent with effect estimates for excess incidence for all cancers ranging from 6 to 14% above background rates. Pooling would increase sample size and de-duplicate cases between the cohorts. However, pooling required time consuming steps: obtaining Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals and legal agreements from entities involved; establishing an honest broker for managing the data; de-duplicating the pooled cohort files; applying to State Cancer Registries (SCRs) for matched cancer cases; and finalizing analysis data files. Obtaining SCR data use agreements ranged from 6.5 to 114.5 weeks with six states requiring >20 weeks. Records from FDNY (n = 16,221), WTCHR (n = 29,372), and GRC (n = 33,427) were combined de-duplicated resulting in 69,102 unique individuals. Overall, 7894 cancer tumors were matched to the pooled cohort, increasing the number cancers by as much as 58% compared to previous analyses. Pooling resulted in a coherent resource for future research for studies on rare cancers and mortality, with more representative of occupations and WTC- exposure.

The 2015 European Society of Cardiology/European Respiratory Society treatment guidelines recommend frequent risk assessment in pulmonary arterial hypertension utilizing risk variables. Our objectives were: (1) to investigate the impact of inhaled treprostinil on risk stratification using the French noninvasive approach and REVEAL 2.0, and (2) to analyze the prognostic utility of both risk stratification methods in the predominantly New York Heart Association/World Health Organization functional class III/IV cohorts of TRIUMPH and BEAT. A post hoc analysis was performed to assess risk at baseline and follow‐up at Week 12 in the TRIUMPH cohort (n = 148) and at Week 16, 21, and 30 in the inhaled treprostinil naïve placebo BEAT cohort (n = 73). Overall survival, clinical worsening‐free survival, and pulmonary arterial hypertension‐related hospitalization‐free survival were all assessed in the pooled TRIUMPH and inhaled treprostinil naïve placebo BEAT cohorts based on risk group/strata at Week 12/16 follow‐up. Inhaled treprostinil improved REVEAL 2.0 risk stratum (OR: 2.38, 95% CI: 1.09–5.19, p = 0.0298) and REVEAL 2.0 score (p = 0.0008) compared to placebo in the TRIUMPH cohort at Week 12. REVEAL 2.0 risk stratum and the number of low‐risk criteria by the French approach improved at Weeks 16, 21, and 30 in the inhaled treprostinil naïve placebo BEAT cohort. Combining cohorts, REVEAL 2.0 risk stratification at follow‐up was prognostic for clinical worsening‐free, pulmonary arterial hypertension hospitalization‐free, and overall survival, whereas the number of low‐risk criteria was not. These post‐hoc pooled analyses suggest inhaled treprostinil improves risk status and indicates that the REVEAL 2.0 calculator may be more suitable than the French noninvasive method for evaluating short‐term clinical change in the New York Heart Association/World Health Organization functional class III/IV population.

Peripheral neuropathy can result from numerous conditions including metabolic disorders, inflammatory disease, or exposure to environmental or biological toxins. We analyzed questionnaire data from 9239 Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) World Trade Center (WTC)-exposed firefighters and emergency medical service workers (EMS) to evaluate the association between work at the WTC site and subsequent peripheral neuropathy symptoms using the validated Diabetic Neuropathy Symptom (DNS) score. We grouped the population into an “Indicated” group with conditions known to be associated with paresthesia (N = 2059) and a “Non-Indicated” group without conditions known to be associated (N = 7180). The level of WTC exposure was categorized by time of arrival to the WTC. Overall, 25% of workers aged 40 and older reported peripheral neuropathy symptoms: 30.6% in the Indicated and 23.8% in the Non-Indicated groups, respectively. Multivariable logistic models performed on the Non-Indicated group, and on the Non-Indicated in comparison with non-WTC exposed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), found that the highest level of WTC-exposure was significantly associated with DNS positive outcomes, after controlling for potential confounders. In conclusion, this study suggests that symptoms of peripheral neuropathy and paresthesias are common and are associated with WTC-exposure intensity.

Support group participation has been shown to be effective in many chronic medical conditions. The evidence for integrating support group into pulmonary hypertension care and its effect on quality of life, physical and psychological well-being is limited. We sought to assess the effect of support group participation on quality of life in patients diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and their caregivers. The emPHasis-10 questionnaire (a tool validated for quality of life assessment in pulmonary hypertension) was used to evaluate the effect of support group participation. Additional demographic and health-related quality measures were examined. Results showed that 165 subjects were enrolled in the study; 122 (74.4%) were patients with pulmonary hypertension, 41 (25.0%) were their caregivers, and 2 (0.02%) did not respond. The cohort was predominantly female ( n = 128, 78%), Caucasian ( n = 10, 61%), and the principal self-reported classification of pulmonary hypertension was World Health Organization Group 1 ( n = 85, 51.8%) and the self-reported New York Heart Association Functional Class was II and III ( n = 43, 57.3%). Most participants ( n = 118, 71.5%) attended support groups and of them, a majority ( n = 107, 90.6%) stated it helped them. There was no difference in quality of life as assessed by emPHasis-10 scores with support group participation (median score 30 vs 32, p = 0.387). There was self-reported improvement in understanding condition better including procedures such as right heart catheterization, medication compliance, and confidence in self-care ( p < 0.05). Using multivariate logistic regression, baseline variables that were independently associated with emPHasis-10 scores for the entire cohort included knowledge of New York Heart Association Functional Class (odds ratio: 1.919, 95% CI: 1.004–3.67, p = 0.04) and greater distance traveled to visit pulmonary hypertension physician (odds ratio: 1.391, 95% CI: 0.998--1.94, p = 0.05). In conclusion, support group participation does not improve quality of life as assessed by emPHasis-10 scores but improves other meaningful health-related quality outcomes.
