Abstract: During the late 1950s, prompted by the US State Department, an interracial group of national leaders of women's organizations in the United States formed the African Women's Committee to reach out to their African counterparts in the wake of successful independence movements throughout the continent. After consulting with numerous African women and leading experts on Africa, the committee initiated a program that brought groups of African women to the United States for short training programs designed to strengthen their leadership skills through both coursework and immersion in women's organizations. This article examines the assumptions both groups of women brought to their interactions and the ways the program changed during this period as a response to racist encounters in the US, new teachers in the classes and African women's evaluations of their experiences.

In giving the home audience an experience that combines both images and sound, surpassing the potential of the traditional mediums of print and radio, the audience rallying around the television increased by the day. Reality shows originated as a result of the introducing new programme models to the television. Attempts were made to portray real life forms of people in a more realistic way through the reality format. A majority of the audience were inclined towards watching reality programmes and the trend was to see the rise of modern social media activism. Thus, the research problem herein was to analyse whether the strategic use of social media, causes reality television programs to become more popular. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the close association of reality television programs with social media directly influenced the increase in popularity of reality television programs due to recent dynamics and trends in the reality program format. The study was conducted by analytically studying books written on reality shows, research-related information that has been published far and utilizing data on the present context. The use of new technology, especially in reality shows, has changed the face of the realist model. Various data showed that different cultural changes were taking place in each of the social systems in an attempt to attract more audiences apart from reality. The study also establishes that reality themes that originated in the United States may have spread to other parts of the world. The data also reflect that many countries are imitating reality shows produced in the United States. With the rise of social media in the modern Internet age, all television channels have used social media to promote their programs. Due to the large number of young individuals watching TV shows on social media, reality shows were also broadcasted live on social media and television stations released episodes considered to have the best reach on social media. Accordingly, this study highlights that there is currently no single existence for reality shows without social media activism.

Abstract This article investigates the history of the International Television Federation, or Intertel. A collaboration between telecasters from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, Intertel throughout the 1960s produced and distributed public affairs documentaries for an international audience. Intertel’s members positioned public affairs programming in the 1960s as an “effective weapon for peace.” By making the nations of the world legible to one another, Intertel programs sought to deploy the international circulation of television texts as a means to diminish tensions in a world defined by uneven economic growth, Cold War ideological battles, and the specter of nuclear warfare. Drawing on archival materials, press reports, and the programs themselves, this essay offers an institutional history of the program’s development, expansion, and demise, as well as an analysis of its politics and ideological premises.

Immigrant women report a high level of stress during pregnancy due to language barriers, cultural differences, and differences in the standard of prenatal care. In this study, we evaluated the level of concern Japanese women in the United States feel during pregnancy and their level of satisfaction with their care. This data can be used to modify prenatal care programs and education to address these concerns. Data collected from 96 women showed there was a high level of prenatal concern regarding their baby's health, pain control, the short length of hospitalization after birth, and the lack of breastfeeding support. Despite these concerns, postpartum women ended up being satisfied with all items except the short duration of their hospital stay.

In this essay, we describe modular production of television news, established at the University of Georgia, one of the leading journalism programs in the United States, in the scope of its experience-based learning efforts. The new method of producing television news assumes the innovative way of combining live and prerecorded segments of traditionally “all live” television newscasts to encourage proficient dissemination of the news content on multiple platforms and focus journalistic work more fully on the editorial process of news production. The findings are discussed in light of situational learning theories and Parkinson’s Law of time management, as well as benefits for student learning.

Policy makers allocate billions of dollars each year to tax incentives that increasingly favor creative industries. This study scrutinizes that approach by examining motion picture incentive programs used in over thirty states to encourage film and television production. It uses a quasi-experimental strategy to determine whether those programs have contributed to employment growth. Results mostly show no statistically significant effects. Results also indicate that domestic employment is unaffected by competing incentives offered outside the United States. These findings are robust to several alternative models and should lead policy makers to question the wisdom of targeted incentives conferred on creative industries.

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is the description of the social map that is presented to the viewers of public television. Using content analysis methodology, the study describes how different genders, racial groups, and age groups are being portrayed on PBS programming. The sample consisted of one week of PBS 1984 fall programming broadcast on KERA-TV, the PBS station in Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas. Research questions addressing proportions of groups, types of roles, length of scenes, occupational variation, conversational behaviors, conflict management modes, and cultural norms were answered. All coding was accomplished by the principal investigator. Upon completion of the coding sub-totals for the variables under study by program types and a grand total for the entire sample were then tabulated. After this extensive content analysis, the report concludes that females are still extremely underrepresented in PBS programming, accounting for only 32.7% of the total participants. Blacks and Hispanics are also underrepresented except in children's programming. Occupational variation for white males is evident for all types of PBS programming. Occupational variation for white females is evident in children's programming and informational/documentary programming. Minorities with delineated occupations are extremely limited in all types of programming except for children's programming. The exchange of information is the major conversational behavior that occurs on PBS programming with minority characters receiving orders considerably more than their white counterparts. Verbal aggression is the conflict management mode chosen most frequently on PBS programming. Explicit messages regarding racial and sexual equality and prosocial behavior occur on PBS programming. Implicit messages such as frequency of appearances, number of major roles, and prevalence of power cues suggest a white male domination of television programming on PBS. The findings of the study reveal that major inroads have been made by women and minorities in children's programming. This comprehensive analysis confirms, however, the virtual exclusion of minorities in major segments of PBS programming.

This study focuses on dark-skinned, Black women's representation in Black sitcoms. Through a mixed-methods use of a comparative textual analysis and focus group, the content and context of episodes from A Different World and Dear White People are explored to illustrate portrayals of dark-skinned, Black women and how these portrayals affect dark-skinned, Black women's self-esteem. Its findings contribute to colorism research by exploring colorism in Black sitcoms. Because this topic is largely unexplored, this study seeks to begin a conversation about dark skinned, Black women's representation in Black sitcoms. The main objective is to ultimately improve their depictions and roles in Black sitcoms and hold Black creatives responsible for the role they play in promoting colorism and its ultimate effect on Black women's self esteem.

This thesis was designed to determine whether there are significant differences in family sitcoms between type of response and family type; between action and family type; between type of interaction and family type; and whether there are more positive than negative responses on both types of sitcoms.Seven nuclear and single-parent family situation comedies which are presently being shown on network prime-time television were compared to one another. A content analysis using a goodness-of-fit test was utilized to determine if parenting differences between the two types of family situation comedies existed.A chi-square showed that there is no difference between the number of negative and positive scenes in each type of sitcom. Finally, it was shown that no major parenting differences exist between single-parent and nuclear family sitcoms presently viewed on network prime-time television.

A survey testing student uses of and attitudes towards traditional broadcast television news and eleven "tabloid" programs was conducted using 300 students enrolled at the University of North Texas. The 10:00 p.m. newscast was most watched by the students. The most watched weekly news magazine was "60 Minutes." The Oprah Winfrey Show" was the daily "tabloid" leader. "America's Most Wanted" led the weekly "tabloid" shows. Students perceived daily newscasts as important sources of information. "USA Today," the weekly news magazines "60 Minutes" and "20/20,1" and "America's Most Wanted" were also cited by students as being "important" information programming. However, the survey showed "tabloid television" was not a major source of informational programming for college students.

Within the past twenty years, an abundant amount of research has been done on how alcohol advertising and alcohol portrayals affect society. The most common studies have examined the influence alcohol advertising and alcohol portrayals have or do not have on adolescents, the relationship between alcohol content and the level of consumption, and how adults and under-age drinkers perceive drinking incidents. The present study is a content analysis examining how four networks- ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC vary in the amount of alcohol incidents shown in prime-time programming. The two-week study began on Sunday, May 20, 2001 and ended on Saturday, June 2, 2001 from 8 to 11 p.m. each evening. Alcohol incidents were classified as either a physical or verbal reference, as well as an appearance. Physical references were further categorized as the type of theme represented, the venue of the incident, and the type of drink involved. The findings suggest that the FOX and NBC networks air programs that present more alcohol incidents and themes of socialization than ABC and CBS. Therefore the researcher concludes that because of the target audience age is younger for FOX and NBC, these networks are more inclined to show more alcohol incidents and socialization themes versus the ABC and CBS networks, which have an older target viewing audience.

This study is concerned with the problem of whether the public's attitudes toward economic well-being could be compared with the types of television programs made popular over a thirty-year period. Two measures were used to determine the public's attitudes toward economic well-being: 1) answers to questions of an economic nature; and 2) answers to questions that asked what was the most important problem. All data were compiled from Gallup polls administered during 1955 through 1984. The television genre data were compiled from sources by Brooks and Marsh, McNeil and Norback and Broadcasting magazine. No association existed among the three measures.

This study sought to provide more up to date information on the way women are depicted on television. Over the last sixty-five years women have played characters that centered around the children, home, and their husband, always in a supportive role to a man such as a wife, girlfriend, or as an assistant such as a secretary. These roles have begun to shift and represent the actual positions that women hold in reality. It has taken decades for this pattern to shift and allow women to be viewed as more than just an accessory to men. Content from the popular show Sex and the City was analyzed using the monologue from the voice overs of the program to determine ifthe focus of the show was on men, women, or men and women as well as if they were shown in a positive, negative or neutral light and to determine if men were dominant, females were dominant or if men and women were shown to be equal. The implications from the study showed that men are a main focus of the show and that both men and women are shown negatively. Women were also found to be dominant figures. Overall the data showed that there have been small changes with the depiction of women on television.

Abstract This chapter traces the evolution of psychological warfare’s theory and practice in the US military, with an emphasis on the counterinsurgency turn during the Vietnam War. It considers the significance of the United States Information Agency and its provision of technical and advisory support to friendly governments around the world. It focuses especially on the USIA’s Joint United States Public Affairs Office (JUSPAO), which in 1965 became the nerve centre of US information and psychological war programs in Vietnam. It details US efforts to ‘win the hearts and minds’ of the Vietnamese people, including the construction of Vietnam’s first national television broadcast system. It concludes that, despite their social scientific credentials, US psychological warriors found themselves unable to understand – let alone win – the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese people they sought to govern.

Period: 1987–1992. A turbulent period begins when Univision and Telemundo launch. Telemundo’s founders are Wall Street “raiders” Saul Steinberg and Harry Silverman. Directed by Carlos Barba, Telemundo at first excels. Formerly SIN, Univision now is controlled by Hallmark, its head Irvine Hockaday. Directed by Joaquin Blaya, Univision counters Televisa’s high fees with two classic U.S.-produced Spanish-language shows: Sábado Gigante and Christina. However, the two networks divide audiences and suffer financially. At Telemundo, near bankruptcy, Steinberg ousts Silverman. Hallmark defaults on Univision’s debt. The first Hispanic Nielsen ratings, needed to attract advertisers, raise hopes for large revenues. However, Univision falls in the ratings when Blaya eliminates Televisa programs and initiates “domestic production.” Preferring foreign content, viewers reject further U.S.-produced shows. Hallmark sells Univision to Hollywood mogul Jerry Perenchio. He names Azcárraga part owner. Both eager to reinstate Televisa programs, largely telenovelas, in the U.S., Perenchio compels Azcárraga to sign a Program Licensing Agreement (PLA) by which Univision will pay Televisa a pittance for programs until 2017. Blaya is outraged. He resigns, becomes president of Telemundo, and stages a mutiny of Univision’s personnel.

The speed and breadth with which global television is crossing borders has been accelerated by legal web-delivered platforms, particularly services like Netflix and Amazon Video internationally and Hulu in the United States. These sites are developing impressive reputations as prolific producers of “original” content, but this designation as original obscures the national origins of imported programming to claim all creative credit for the SVOD distributor. The authors identify a distinctive shift from long-standing practices surrounding imports on both sides of the Atlantic through the paratextual framing practices of particular SVOD services. To identify these programs as original content communicates exclusivity and freshness, but when this identification is used falsely, it erases the production and exhibition histories of the shows in their originating countries and threatens the global diversity of content, the viability of independent producers, and the localism that has been central to broadcasting from its origins.

Period: 2000–2012. The millennium brings predictions of vast new TV channels for a rapidly growing Latino population. Yet Perenchio’s deal for a second network crushes new entrants. Telemundo finally rises under chief James McNamara. At a $2.7 billion price, Sony sells Telemundo to NBC. The dispute between Perenchio and Azcárraga Jean over the PLA intensifies and erupts into lawsuits. Fighting expands when Azcárraga Jean claims Televisa’s right to succeed Perenchio as owner of Univision but Perenchio departs by selling to Haim Saban. A courtroom showdown ends with a surprise settlement but with Univision still uncertain of programs after the PLA expires in 2017. At Telemundo, NBC’s ownership is fortuitous. From NBC’s infusion of cash, McNamara and successor Don Browne introduce “coproduction” agreements with foreign studios. Telemundo becomes the first major U.S. producer of Spanish-language programs. Univision takes a more historic stride. Resolving their dispute, Univision and Televisa sign an unprecedented “joint operating agreement.” Univision is promised permanent Televisa programming. Televisa claims enlarged control of Univision. The JOA is the first definitive agreement between the parties since Telesistema Méxicano founded SIN in 1961. Yet after 50 years, little in Spanish-language television has changed. Univision still is dominant among Latinos. Its main programs, novelas, are the same. The influence and grip of the Azcárragas remain.

International research has shown that in most countries, there are few women studying towards information technology (IT) careers (Galpin, 2002), and there is much research, particularly in the United States (U.S.), United Kingdom (UK) and Australia into why this is the case (Gürer & Camp, 2002). This article considers the situation in sub-Saharan Africa and focuses on women’s involvement in the generation and creation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in sub-Saharan Africa, as opposed to ICT use in sub-Saharan Africa, which is considered elsewhere in this volume. There are a number of aspects to the generation and creation of ICTs: how women are involved in this process as IT professionals and how they are educated for these careers, as well how technology can be used appropriately within the specific conditions of sub-Saharan Africa. ICTs will be considered in the broadest sense of the word, covering all electronic technologies, from computers and networking to radio and television. Women’s participation is important: The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Gender Caucus (www.genderwsis.org) has identified women’s involvement in the design and development of technology as well as technology management policy, as key principles for the information society. Marcelle (2001) emphasizes the necessity for African women to become involved in technological and scientific areas, including “computer science, software engineering, network design, network management and related disciplines” (Marcelle, 2001, para. 15) to create an information society appropriate for African women. The diversity of those involved in design leads to higher-quality and more appropriate technological solutions (Borg, 2002; Lazowska, 2002). Background Sub-Saharan Africa has a population of 641 million, young (almost half under 15) and rural (35% urban). Significant problems are undernourishment, poverty and HIV/AIDS (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), 2004). All the countries in sub-Saharan Africa are classified as developing countries. Some countries are relatively wealthy, such as Mauritius, South Africa, and Nigeria, but have large wealth disparities within their populations. Women in sub-Saharan Africa are expected to focus on the home, they have less access to education and health, and their contribution to family and community is not valued (Huyer, 1997).

Period: 1993–1999. Perenchio’s tenure at Univision begins contentiously. Capitalizing on the PLA and ignoring discord, Perenchio has President Ray Rodriguez quickly reinstate Televisa’s popular content. As U.S. programs are replaced, Univision personnel lose their jobs. At Telemundo, Blaya briefly succeeds before Telemundo declares bankruptcy. Steinberg yields ownership of Telemundo to another Wall Street “raider,” Leon Black. Univision soars in the early Nielsen ratings. Upon broadcasting Televisa’s blockbuster María la del Barrio, Univision reaches 80 percent of Latino viewers. Telemundo falls to 20 percent. Its audiences equaling those of ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox, Univision issues public stock. It becomes a multibillion dollar firm. Acquired by Sony, Telemundo’s attempt at domestic production alienates Latinos and brings record low ratings. While Telemundo’s reach shrinks to 7 percent of the Latino audience, Univision’s reach enlarges to 93 percent. Univision’s reaches 98 percent with its millennium telecast. It is the highest rating Nielsen ever reports. However, upon Azcárraga Milmo’s death, Televisa passes to his son and heir, Emilio Azcárraga Jean, who demands that Perenchio renegotiate the PLA. Perenchio refuses. Azcárraga Jean sabotages a novela Univision is to show. Warfare awaits.

There is still a considerable degree of catching up to do in regards to fostering gender equality within areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Children's leading medium, television, could offer role models of girls with competence in STEM areas, but unfortunately television programs often miss this chance. The children's television series Annedroids is a notable exception. This chapter provides insight into how children can be educated about gender equality in STEM with the aid of gender-sensitive media programs such as Annedroids. The chapter examines data from a reception study which was conducted under the leadership of the International Central Institute for Youth and Educational Television (IZI) with 6- to 12-year-old children in the United States and Canada (N = 301). The research is enhanced by a conversation between Dr. Maya Götz, Head of IZI; Dr. Diana Nastasia, a contributor to the IZI research; and J. J. Johnson, the program's creator.

Abstract Among television programs aired in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s, those that have most influenced how Americans understand the Holocaust are, arguably, dramas. These include original plays by such pioneering television playwrights as Paddy Chayefsky, Reginald Rose, and Rod Serling, and they feature performances by John Cassavetes, Charles Laughton, Robert Redford, and Maximilian Schell, among other renowned actors. These productions offered to American audiences some of the first portrayals of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Anne Frank’s diary, and life and death in concentration camps.

Chapter One analyzes how television not only responded to 9/11 immediately after the tragedy, but also how it responded (and continues to respond) to it years later through fictionalized dramas. By studying the presence of post-9/11 motifs (e.g. salvation, justice, fear, conspiracy) in 21st century fictional television narratives -- through quantitative data on programming trends and a close reading of one particular program -- this essay argues that such programs are important sites where the terrorist attack (and the cultural climate it sparked) is emotionally worked through. However, this chapter also suggests that television's reluctance to revise its post-9/11 narrative in order to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities may also contribute to the perpetual fear cycle shaping national discourse in the United States.

Growing more confident, John Singlaub and other retired covert warriors launched a series of paramilitary campaigns in Central America in the 1980s. As the Reagan administration faced stiff resistance about its wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador from Congress and the American public, many on the right concluded that the private sector was best suited to channel money, weapons, supplies, and advisors to embattled paramilitary groups. Starting in 1981, Singlaub and his allies organized rallies, sponsored television and radio programs, and published books, pamphlets, and articles to raise millions of dollars in private donations from wealthy individuals and businesses, international groups, and grassroots organizations. Then they used these funds to establish private military aid programs that they hoped would not only fill in for the United States military and intelligence services but also do a better job for less money. This struggle against foreign enemies, made possible by will and weapons, simultaneously legitimized a growing paramilitary subculture in the United States. For it presented a vision of combat in which ordinary citizens took up arms to fight communism.
