Resumo:
The Women's National Indian Association (WNIA) organized in 1879 to advocate fair treatment of Native Americans. By manipulating the Victorian ideology of domesticity, the organization was able to send women missionaries to the reservations. Because women could only work "at home," the WNIA redefined the Indian reservation as the missionaries' home. This redefinition ideologically enabled women missionaries to engage in non-traditional work. Conversely, the WNIA believed Indians would only become "civilized" if they moved from traditional dwellings into frame houses. In addition, native houses could only become "homes" if Indian women became ardent housekeepers and converted to Christianity. Accordingly, the WNIA provided financial support to Indians who wished to build houses, and taught the domestic arts to native women and children. In so doing, and by supporting the government's allotment policy, the WNIA participated in the subjugation of Native Americans and in the westward expansion of the United States.

In this thesis I argue that the received understanding of the work of the Women’s Missionary Association of the Presbyterian Church of England is flawed in that it does not acknowledge the agency of women themselves in creating and directing the path of the Association and its work of mission. Using archive material from the Presbyterian Church of England, and the Women’s Missionary Association itself, I show that as the context in which they were operating changed, the Women’s Missionary Association responded to that shifting context, and that changes in their relationship to the national Church affected the work that they sought to do among the congregations. I uncover a hitherto hidden story and to relate it to the context of the United Reformed Church which stands in the tradition of Presbyterians, Congregationalists and Churches of Christ. I demonstrate how the Story of the Women’s Missionary Association interacts with changing paradigms of mission. Further, I discuss the role of power relationships between the Women’s Missionary Association and the Presbyterian Church of England and the changing role and powerfulness/powerlessness of women in the Presbyterian Church and its successor the United Reformed Church. I show how seeming powerlessness can confer power and how being invited to the seat of power can restrict agency for the women of the Church. Finally, I look at the implications for the contemporary United Reformed Church.

This case study examines the National Association of' Colored Women's Clubs from 1896 to 1935 to explore the extent to which their programs and activities were shaped by the black community.. This researcher asserts that black women's organizational activity is shaped by the internal black political culture ofthe black community. This study conceptualizes black political culture as a network of black institutions, values, priorities, and politics that shape both individual and collective behavior.. The researcher found that leadership, resources, and political struggles over strategic responses to racism, within the black community, did shape the way in which black women organized collectively and carried out their programs. Finally, the findings suggest that a greater understanding of black women's activism can be gained by incorporating cultural factors into analyses of black wonlen's activism..

The media coverage of female athletes has been an uphill battle ever since the passing of Title IX in 1972 over 40 years ago. However, with the ever-increasing popularity of social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, this new age model of communication remains the low hanging fruit for shaping the ways in which female athletes are represented to a mass audience. Analyzing the content of the aforementioned platforms from the 2016 WNBA Playoffs and Finals seeks to answer four questions regarding the themes espnW and ESPN are communicating, how their messaging differs, the ways in which female athlete stereotypes are fed into or challenged, and the responses from espnW’s and ESPN’s social media following. Together, the findings relevant to each question imply a step in the right direction for how female athletes are covered today—for their athletic accomplishments and not for their sex appeal—but the overall volume of this coverage remains low. The battle continues for female athletes far and wide to find their footing and prove their relevancy in a male-dominated industry.

This study identified factors that influenced men to coach women's basketball. The CCFQ, designed to determine relative importance of each of nine factors in career selection, was completed by 78 male head coaches of women's NCAA II basketball. Data was analyzed using univariate analysis with repeated measures, t-tests, and ANOVA. These coaches indicated fulfill need for competition, help female athletes reach full potential, and serve as role model as significant influences. Moderate influences included personal attributes of athletes, job attributes, and career advancement. Job availability, belief in own success, and income were not considered influential in career selection. Few differences were indicated between demographic sub-groups on any factor. Factors associated with well being of athletes had the greatest influence.

Set in the context of the Chinese Exclusion Acts, the Woman's Missionary Association (WMA) of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ supported the community education and evangelistic work of Moy Ling in Portland, Oregon, from 1882 until his death in 1926.Moy immigrated to the United States in 1872 at the age of 19. Settling in Portland, Moy worked as a household servant for General Oliver Otis Howard who was stationed in Portland as commander of the Department of the Columbia from 1874 to 1880. Howard was instrumental in Moy's conversion to Christianity. Moy opened a night school for the Chinese community of Portland in 1877. In 1882, Moy came in contact with Bishop Nicholas Castle who brokered a partnership between Moy and the WMA. Over the next half century, the Portland Chinese Mission made important contributions to the education of the Chinese immigrant communities in Portland, established the Kwan Hing Church, and shaped the attitudes of a generation of United Brethren members toward the Chinese.The United Brethren Church experienced a schism in 1889, dividing into the New Constitution and Old Constitution branches. Moy was instrumental in the establishment of United Brethren missions in Guangzhou, China, for both branches of the church. In 1889, Moy traveled to China with a New Constitution delegation to open a mission in Guangzhou. In 1924, Moy introduced the Old Constitution WMA to Chiu Yan Tsz, a professor at Canton Christian College in Guangzhou, who then founded the Old Constitution mission in China.Moy sought to influence United States immigration policy. His relationship with Howard developed into a lasting friendship, and they kept in contact for over 30 years. Letters between the two men show that Moy, together with a group of Portland merchants, engaged Howard to use his national reputation to advocate against the permanent congressional renewal of the Geary Act in 1902.The relationship between Moy and the WMA displayed characteristics which are consistent with current missiological definitions of healthy partnership. Such characteristics, as described by Luis Bush, include autonomy, trust, agreed-upon expectations, complementary resources, and mutual goals.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, white middle and upper class women active in reform became involved in the movement for American Indian reform. Focusing on the so-called "Indian problem," groups such as the Women's National Indian Association (WNIA) were formed to address the injustices against, and sufferings of, American Indian people at the hands of the U.S. military due to the increasing pressures and demands of western migration. This study addresses the role white women played in the movement for Indian reform through their involvement either as part of the WNIA membership or as missionaries, teachers or field matrons. The thesis is concerned, above all, with the ways in which their involvement reflects larger historical trends that enveloped white middle class women during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work of reform groups like the WNIA helped transform missionary and field positions into jobs which were identified as specially suited for women. While missionary work was, before the 1870s, part of the male or public sphere, through the feminization of American religion, Victorian tenets of domesticity and moral superiority, and changing economic and commercial opportunities, the way was opened for women to serve as missionaries without the "protection" of a husband. The WNIA provides an impressive example of the scope and influence of women's reform organizations during the Progressive era. However, the goals and beliefs of WNIA leadership provide a contrast to the goals and beliefs of women working in the field. This contrast illuminates women's intentions in their quest for Indian assimilation and their role in that pursuit. The thesis is based upon the individual experience of women who worked as missionaries, teachers and field matrons. Four case studies explored in chapter III provide a window into the redefinition of "true womanhood" that took place at the turn-of-the century through the ways in which the subjects of this thesis arrive at a new self consciousness about their role in Indian reform.

This dissertation has examined the University Christian Movement (UCM) over its turbulent five year history from 1967 to 1972 in terms of the original hopes of the sponsoring ecumenical denominations. Contextual factors within the socio-political arena of South Africa as well as broader youth cultural influences are shown to have had a decisive influence. These factors help to explain the negative reaction from the founding churches. While this is not a thesis on Black Consciousness, nevertheless the contribution of the UCM to the rise of Black Consciousness and Black Theology is evaluated. UCM is shown to be a movement well ahead of its time as a forerunner in South Africa of Black Theology, contextual theology, feminism, modem liturgical styles, and intercommunion. As such it was held in suspicion. It suffered repressive action from the government and alienation from the churches. Constant cross referencing to other organisations such as the World Student Christian Federation, the National Union of South African Students, the South African Council of Churches, the Christian Institute, and the Sllldents Christian Association, helps to locate the UCM within the flow of contemporary history. The concluding evaluation differs markedly from the report of the Schlebusch Commission by making both critical and positive judgement from the perspective of the UCM as an ecumenical mission to students.
