A new triangular Williams element with generalized degrees of freedom (GDOFs) was proposed for analysis of stress intensity factor (SIF) of mode II crack. The singular region around the crack tip was evenly divided into a series of triangular elements, which could be approximated by the improved Williams series. On the basis of the principle, the displacement of local field must be compatible with that of the global one, so that the SIF at the crack tip can be directly evaluated by one of the undetermined constants of the Williams series. Three important parameters for the triangular Williams element, including the radial scale factor, the number of subelements and the terms of the Williams series, were discussed in detail. Numerical example shows that the triangular Williams elements with GDOFs can directly calculate the mode II SIF with high accuracy and efficiency.

In the present study the asymptotic analysis of the multi-parameter Williams series expansion of the stress-strain state in the vicinity of seven different configurations is performed. The aim of the asymptotic analysis is to educate the sensitivity of different cracked and notched configurations to the number of kept terms in Williams series expansion. It is shown that all configurations with the concentrated forces possess the more sensitivity to the number of terms in the truncated Williams series expansions and, therefore, require the more terms in the series expansion. The cracked configurations with distributed loadings are less sensitive to the number of terms in Williams series expansion. As a whole, it is demonstrated that high order terms have principal role in the description of the stress-strain in the vicinity of the crack tip.

The Finite Block Method (FBM) for computing the Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) and the T-stress under transient dynamic load is presented. In order to capture the stress intensity factor and the T-stress, the Williams' series of stress function is introduced in the circular core for statics generally. In the Laplace domain, the Deng's series of stress and displacement is too complicated to be used easily like Williams' series. However, the numerical solutions show that Williams' solution of series is still valid with smaller core size. Comparisons have been made with the solutions given by the finite element method (ABAQUS).

This study aims at obtaining coefficients of the multi-parameter Williams series expansion for the stress field in the vicinity of the central crack in the rectangular plate and in the semi-circular notched disk under bending by the use of the digital photoelasticity method. The higher-order terms in the Williams asymptotic expansion are retained. It allows us to give a more accurate estimation of the near-crack-tip stress, strain and displacement fields and extend the domain of validity for the Williams power series expansion. The program is specially developed for the interpretation and processing of experimental data from the phototelasticity experiments. By means of the developed tool, the fringe patterns that contain the whole field stress information in terms of the difference in principal stresses (isochromatics) are captured as a digital image, which is processed for quantitative evaluations. The developed tool allows us to find points that belong to isochromatic fringes with the minimal light intensity. The digital image processing with the aid of the developed tool is performed. The points determined with the adopted tool are used further for the calculations of the stress intensity factor, T-stresses and coefficients of higher-order terms in the Williams series expansion. The iterative procedure of the over-deterministic method is utilized to find the higher order terms of the Williams series expansion. The procedure is based on the consistent correction of the coefficients of the Williams series expansion. The first fifteen coefficients are obtained. The experimentally obtained coefficients are used for the reconstruction of the isochromatic fringe pattern in the vicinity of the crack tip. The comparison of the theoretically reconstructed and experimental isochromatic fringe patterns shows that the coefficients of the Williams series expansion have a good match.

The article describes the processing of the results of a series of experiments performed by the interference-optical method of holographic interferometry (holographic photoelasticity) aimed at computing the amplitude coefficients of the M. Williams series constituting the stress and displacement fields at the crack tip for several cracked configurations. The main objective of this study is the experimental and computational determination of the coefficients of the M. Williams series for the stress, strain and displacement fields associated with the crack tip in an isotropic linearly elastic medium taking into account regular (non-singular) terms in the multiparameter Williams series. These coefficients are named generalized stress intensity factors. The method of holographic interferometry is shown to be a convenient and efficacious tool for reconstructingthe stress field near the tip of the crack, because during the experiment it is possible to obtain two families of interference fringe patterns: absolute retardation fringes (isodromics) for vertical and horizontal polarizations. Experimental outcomes were thoroughly processed using the developed digital application allowing us to accumulate the isodromics orders and coordinates of points belonging to absolute retardations. In this work, absolute retardation fringes in a plate with a central horizontal crack and a crack inclined at different angles are obtained. For each type of experimental sample, the coefficients of the Williams series were calculated taking into account non-singular terms (in the representation of M. Williams, fifteen terms were preserved). A procedure for linearization of nonlinear algebraic equations following from the relations of Favres law is proposed. By solving the obtained overdeterministic system of linear algebraic equations, the generalized stress intensity factors (coefficients of the M. Williams series) are estimated. Conjointly, the finite element analysis of the specimens with same geometry was effectuated. The experimentally determined values of the Williams series are compared with the results of the finite element calculation of the stress-strain state performed in the SIMULIA Abaqus software. The results of the numerical and experimental studies were found to be quite consistent. It is lucidly shown that it is imperative to keep the higher order terms in the Williams seriesexpansions for the fields associated with the crack tip.

In this study coefficients of the multi-parameter Williams power series expansion for the stress field in the vicinity of the central crack in the rectangular plate and in the semi-circular notched disk under bending are obtained by the use of the finite element analysis. In SIMULIA Abaqus, the finite element analysis software, the numerical solutions for these two cracked geometries are found. The rectangular plate with the central crack has the geometry similar to the geometry used in the digital photoelasticity. Numerical simulations of the same cracked specimen as in the experimental photoelasticity method are performed. The numerical solutions obtained are utilized for the determination of the coefficients of the Williams series expansion. The higher-order coefficients are extracted from the finite element method calculations implemented in Simulia Abaqus software package and the outcomes are compared to experimental values. Determination of the coefficients of the terms of this series is performed using the least squares-based regression technique known as the over-deterministic method, for which stresses data obtained numerically in SIMULIA Abaqus software are taken as inputs. The plate with a small central crack has been considered either. This kind of the cracked specimen has been utilized for comparison of coefficients of the Williams series expansion obtained from the finite element analysis with the coefficients known from the theoretical solution based on the complex variable theory in plane elasticity. It is shown that the coefficients of the Williams series expansion match with good accuracy. The higher-order terms in the Williams series expansion for the semi-circular notch disk are found.

Organic matrix laminated composites are increasingly used in the aeronautical field to reduce the weight of structures. However, during an impact on this type of material, various damage mechanism can occur, such as delamination. This is a process of macroscopic decohesion of the interlaminar environment, which can be characterised by GIC (or KIC ). The literature shows a wide disparity in measurements due to incomplete decoupling of the effects of resin confinement by fibers, nonlinearitiesbehaviour and/or velocity effects. This work proposes to develop an experimental protocol to characterise pure resin usingfullfields measurements to methodically study these couplings. The goal is to evaluate the impact of the crack propagation speed and the structural effects on the fracture behaviour and in particular to extend Griffith's theory to laminated composites. Different specimen geometries are used to reproduce structural effects. Crack propagation speeds ranging from quasi-static to dynamic are studied and all the tests are analysed using linear elastic fracture mechanics and the fracture surfaces. Finally, this work proposes a model to describe the evolution of KIC for the resin HexplyM21 used in aeronautics field, from the non-singularterms of the stress field T-stress, B-stress and also the speed ȧ in the ranges [0 - 15] MPa, [- 200 - 10] MPa.m-0.5 et [10-6, 600] m.s-1 respectively

The presented dissertation thesis is focused, as the title suggests, on the analysis of stress state aspects of quasi-brittle fracture. That means the fracture of composite materials with cement matrix (such as concrete, mortar, plaster, etc.), ceramics and other composites. Used methods are based on the theory of multi-parameter linear elastic fracture mechanics, which highlights the importance of considering of several initial terms of Williams power series, approximating the stress and displacement fields in a cracked body, within conducted fracture analyses. Determination of values of coefficients of terms of this series, recalculated into the shape functions serving in most of the conducted stress state analyses, is performed via the so called over-deterministic method. Another tool for the problem solving is nonlinear fracture mechanics, represented primarily by the cohesive crack model, namely the crack band model implemented in the used ATENA software. For the backward reconstruction of stress field in the cracked bodies the application ReFraPro is used. The analytical part deals with various aspects of wedge-splitting test – from the boundary conditions, though various possibilities of nodal selection (required as input variables for the over-deterministic method) up to the advanced (automated) analysis of numerical model. Special chapter includes atypical test specimens designed for adjusting of various levels of constraint of stress and deformation at the propagating crack tip. The study of this geometry and also the subsequent detail analysis reveals important information for real experiments. Backward reconstruction of stress field presents analysis on suitable possibilities of nodal selections as inputs into the procedure of approximation of the crack tip fields and answers the question of the necessity of application of the multi-parameter linear elastic fracture mechanics for certain fracture analyses of specimens from quasi-brittle materials. AbstractContemporary media and public accounts have increasingly framed the refugee ‘crisis’ in terms of security, with refugees considered as masses to be managed and controlled, migrants pointed at with generic allegation of terrorist threat, and state borders closed and militarized. Securitization of migration may not be a new phenomenon (Saunders 2014) but it is one that has recently received a great deal of attention (see among others Bigo 2002; Pugh 2004; Huysmans and Squire 2009; Huysmans 2000; Musarò 2017; Vaughan-Williams 2015; Watson 2009). What all these scholars have in common is that they highlight different ways through which refugees are represented, described, and thought of as threat. Media and public accounts have consistently represented refugees through words such as plight, invasion, flood, hordes, or waves (Friese 2017). The “highly heterogeneous and (too) strongly mediation-dependent European politics created an array of – in most cases negative – interpretations of the Refugee Crisis” (Krzyżanowski et al. 2018). In line with this narrative, at the visual level, the images that have accompanied the news on refugees have mostly included overcrowded boats, long lines of people in need, and looming masses of people crammed at border fences.

This chapter describes the transitions that took place leading up to and following the death of William Dick. His non-veterinary civic duties are briefly described. The roles that his sister, Mary Dick, performed in the College are indicated. William left his estate to the Lord Provost, Magistrates and Council of Edinburgh as Trustees. He was succeeded as Principal of College by James H.B. Hallen for one year and then by William Williams. A series of disruptions among Williams’s staff led to his resignation. Williams took with him most of the clinical material and many students. He was succeeded by William Fearnley who struggled with the chaos left by Williams’ departure. He could not cope and resigned in 1874.

Vaughan Williams’s return to composition was a gradual process—beginning with a series of arrangements and small-scale works—but soon revealed important new stylistic and expressive practices. Several compositions that premiered in the immediate postwar period were completed in full or in part before the war; they share several traits with those written following his return to England: extensive counterpoint, evocations of older styles or genres (often suggesting neoclassical practices), and associations with religious or spiritual topics. Four works from this period—The Lark Ascending, the Pastoral Symphony, the Mass in G Minor, and The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains—represent some of the most significant and influential contributions to English pastoral music in the twentieth century, and powerfully affected the tastes and aesthetics of British musicians and audiences for many years to come. From a musical perspective, pastoral compositions often display elements such as modally inflected scales, rhapsodic melodies with irregular phrase lengths, gently flowing rhythms, triadic yet tonally ambiguous harmonies, quiet dynamics, and light and transparent textures, all of which contribute to the generally understated and restrained expressive tone of such works.

This chapter ponders the decision of William Carlos Williams to give his volume Al Que Quiere! a Spanish title. It examines the social inequities implied—in a North American context—between this poet’s use of Spanish and English, and reflects upon not only the sociopolitical, but the creative aesthetic and the biographical ramifications of this choice. The chapter looks at the relationship between Williams’s use of non-translation and a democratic view of the pleasures of modern poetry. This chapter suggests that implications of the non-translated title speak to the pleasures and themes contained within the poems themselves, examined in a series of close readings of particular poems.

The in-line-Inspection of Williams’ Gas West Pipeline in September 2001 was successfully completed using the newly developed 16” UltraScan® CD tool of GE PII Pipeline Solutions. The particular pipeline section inspected was known to be affected by Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). The inspection was carried out using the liquid batching technique developed by PII Pipeline Solutions. A special launcher and receiver barrel was designed to enable the handling of a series of three batching pigs in front of and two behind the inspection tool. A manifold of “kicker lines” was mounted to the barrel to launch the batching pigs and the inspection tool. The main benefits of this new design were minimizing operational downtime, ensuring complete air/natural gas displacement from the launcher, and providing for a smoother launch procedure. Due to the large elevation changes within the pipeline section, a key concern was maintaining pig velocity within 1m/s for adequate data resolution. Rather than rely on a general “rule of thumb”, a transient analysis was performed to define a range of possible batch sizes and better understand the expected pressure gradients while pumping the water slug. Based on actual data collected during this successful run, the transient model will be refined to better handle friction effects between the sealing cups and disks in future batch inspection runs. The data analysis stage for large crack features is completed and full analysis for small defects is ongoing. Analysis and excavation results are discussed in the paper. Results from this inspection are expected to considerably extend the understanding of crack formation in this pipeline and will be used to help establish an overall integrity management plan for the pipeline.

Abstract The eigenvalues of Williams’ series expansion for generalized wedge problems, which include cracks, re-entrant corners, free edges, and cracks meeting with material interface, etc. are examined from the viewpoint of conservation laws like J-integral and M-integral. By use of the so-called two-state conservation laws or interaction energy, originally proposed by Eshelby and later treated by Chen and Shield, discussed is that the complementary pairs of eigenvalues exist in the J-integral sense and/or in the M-integral sense when these integrals are conserved. Similar results are shown to hold for the eigenvalues of three dimensional wedges.

Resumo:
Abstract From linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), it is well accepted that only the singular stress near the crack tip contributes to the fracture event through the crack tip stress intensity factor K. In the biaxial loading, the stress component that adds to the T-stress at the crack tip, affects only the second term in the Williams’ series solution around the crack tip. Therefore, it is generally believed that biaxial load does not change the apparent fracture toughness or the critical stress intensity factor (Kc). This paper revisited several specimen geometries under biaxial loading with finite element method. The sources of discrepancy between the theory and the test data were identified. It was found that the ideal biaxial loading would not be achieved for typical fracture specimens with finite geometry. Comparison to available test data shows that, while the biaxial load could affect the apparent fracture toughness, the contribution is relatively small.

The Dynamic Stiffness Method (DSM) is used to analyse the free vibration characteristics of a rotating uniform Shear beam. Starting from the kinetic and strain energy expressions, the Hamilton’s principle is used to obtain the governing differential equations of motion and the natural boundary conditions. The two equations are solved simultaneously and expressed each in terms of displacement and slope only. The Frobenius power series solution is applied to solve the equations and the resulting solutions are also expressed in terms of four independent solutions. Applying the appropriate boundary conditions, the Dynamic Stiffness Matrix is assembled. The natural frequencies of vibration using the DSM are computed by employing the in-built root finding algorithm in Mathematica as well as by implementing the Wittrick-Williams algorithm in a numerical routine in Mathematica. The results obtained using the DSM are presented in tabular and graphical forms and are compared with results obtained using the Timoshenko and the Bernoulli-Euler theories.

The American Library Association’s 1982 statement on Diversity in Collection Development reminds librarians of our professional responsibility “to select and support the access to materials on all subjects that meet, as closely as possible, the needs, interests, and abilities of all persons in the community the library serves. This includes materials that reflect political, economic, religious, social, minority, and sexual issues.” The William H. Hannon (WHH) Library’s vision statementaffirms that the library views itself as Bridge, Gateway, Agora, and Enterprise. To ensure that our materials collection aligns with our institutional vision and meets the research needs of our diverse campus population, the project team proposed an assessment of our electronic collection through the lens of diversity. The assessment was to determine if the library’s online databases (most often the first point of research consultation for our students and faculty) are adequately “bridging disciplines” (Bridge) and “representing diverse topics and perspectives” (Gateway). What the team learns will inform the library collection strategy, to ensure that it builds collections that deliberately and positively contribute to an inclusive campus climate. Resumo:
A short but productive cruise aboard RV William Kennedy tested various new field equipment near Halifax (port of departure and return) but also in areas that could also benefit science understanding. The GSC-A Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle equipped with bathymetric, sidescan and sub-bottom profiler was successfully deployed for the first time on Scotian Shelf science targets. It surveyed three small areas: two across known benthic sponge, Vazella (Russian Hat) within a DFO-directed trawling closure area on the SE flank of Sambro Bank, bordering Emerald Basin, and one across known pockmarks, eroded cone-shaped depression in soft mud due to fluid efflux. The sponge study sites (~ 150 170 m water depth) were known to lie in an area of till (subglacial diamict) exposure at the seabed. The AUV data identified gravel and cobble-rich seabed, registering individual clasts at 35 cm gridded resolution. A subtle variation in seabed texture is recognized in sidescan images, from cobble-rich on ridge crests and flanks, to limited mud-rich sediment in intervening troughs. Correlation between seabed topography and texture with the (previously collected) Vazella distribution along two transects is not straightforward. However there may be a preference for the sponge in the depressions, some of which have a thin but possibly ephemeral sediment cover. Both sponge study sites depict a hereto unknown morphology, carved in glacial deposits, consisting of a series of discontinuous ridges interpreted to be generated by erosion in multiple, continuous, meandering and cross-cutting channels. The morphology is identical to glacial Nye, or mp;lt;"N-mp;lt;"channels, cut by sub-glacial meltwater. However their scale (10 to 100 times mp;lt;"typicalmp;gt;" N-channels) and the unique eroded medium, (till rather than bedrock), presents a rare or unknown size and medium and suggests a continuum in sub-glacial meltwater channels between much larger tunnel valleys, common to the eastward, and the bedrock forms. A comparison is made with coastal Nova Scotia forms in bedrock. The Emerald Basin AUV site, targeting pockmarks was in ~260 to 270 m water depth and imaged eight large and one small pockmark. The main aim was to investigate possible recent or continuous fluid flux activity in light of ocean acidification or greenhouse gas contribution; most accounts to date suggested inactivity. While a lack of common attributes marking activity is confirmed, creep or rotational flank failure is recognized, as is a depletion of buried diffuse methane immediately below the seabed features. Discovery of a second, buried, pockmark horizon, with smaller but more numerous erosive cones and no spatial correlation to the buried diffuse gas or the seabed pockmarks, indicates a paleo-event of fluid or gas efflux; general timing and possible mechanisms are suggested. The basinal survey also registered numerous otter board trawl marks cutting the surficial mud from past fishing activity. The AUV data present a unique dataset for follow-up quantification of the disturbance. Recent realization that this may play a significant role in ocean acidification on a global scale can benefit from such disturbance quantification. The new pole-mounted sub-bottom profiler collected high quality data, enabling correlation of recently recognized till ridges exposed at the seabed as they become buried across the flank and base of the basin. These, along with the Nye channels, will help reconstruct glacial behavior and flow patterns which to date are only vaguely documented. Several cores provide the potential for stratigraphic dating of key horizons and will augment Holocene environmental history investigations by a Dalhousie University student. In summary, several unique features have been identified, providing sufficient field data for further compilation, analysis and follow-up publications.
