Resumo:
Regarded as one of the greatest American poets in the twentieth century and the prominent poet of the Imagist, William Carlos Williams approaches his poetic world by the special use of images and syntax. In his poems, he invites the common and small things in everyday life as images. By the irregular arrangement of line and stanza breaks, these things are endowed with richer and deeper meanings which is far more than what is shown, open to readers to interpret. The syntax itself in Williams poems is poetic, and the integration of images and syntax in William Carlos Williams poems frames the poets poetic world. This article will review the fluidness of Williams poems approached by flowing images and flowing syntax in William Carlos Williams poems. It attempts to prove that although the images may be seen as accumulative rather than surmounted and the lines and stanzas are broken, the sense is flowing. Concisely but accurately, William Carlos Williams applies the images featuring fluidness to reveal the essence of objects. Through the accumulation of images, the lines and stanzas starts to jump down from one to another, activating the whole scene of the poem to flow. And the flowing syntax which includes the irregular line ends and broken stanzas, the omission of capitalization in each line uplifts the limbs of the poem and make it flow.

Resumo:
Abstract William Carlos Williams was an American poet who renounced poetic diction in favor of the unpoetic, establishing himself in American Modernism as a powerful voice distinct from such canonical contemporaries as T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. His attitude towards literary production was different from many of his contemporaries in that he believed ‘the idea is in the thing’ and therefore the presence of objects rather than abstractions is strongly felt in his poems. A critical survey of Williams’ poems indicates that the poet/physician observes, describes and levels criticism at his society where modernism has transformed the American identity in significant ways. In this article, American icons and popular culture are retraced in the poetry of William Carlos Williams in an effort to explain the seeming opacity of his poems.

Abstract This article revisits a talk at a William Carlos Williams panel that would come to have a major impact on discussions of poetry and poetics, but which also made clear the problematic critical divide between the Williams of the short lyric and the Williams of genre-defying, experimental work, such as Spring and All. The panel took place at the 1983 MLA Convention in New York City, and the speaker was Charles Bernstein. This introductory article to this special issue discusses the original event as well as the talk itself—“The Academy in Peril: William Carlos Williams Meets the MLA”—which has since been published in essay form. In addition, this introduction considers the lasting importance of Spring and All, which was also the topic of a 2023 MLA Williams panel in which Bernstein participated with Bob Perelman and Juliana Spahr to provide their perspectives on the 100th anniversary of Spring and All and the fortieth anniversary of “The Academy in Peril.”

Abstract Although Williams has been praised for depicting working-class life in verse, many of his poems on the subject are marked by curious evasions. This essay considers three aspects of his approach that have received little attention. First, Williams minimizes or erases working-class people in settings where they would presumably be central. Second, he avoids depicting manual labor entirely or treats it as a metaphor for other forms of work. Third, he opposes any attempts to read his poems about the working class politically, by evoking and then quickly revoking the potential for political allegory. These evasions can be traced back to Williams’s distaste for poetry that places politics over form, as well as his objections to Marxist thought. But the poems also betray doubts about his ability to understand and represent working-class life in light of his more privileged social situation. By close reading a range of canonical and lesser-known poems, this article demonstrates that Williams’s portrayal of the working class is far more slippery, avoidant, and conflicted than the scholarship has acknowledged.

ABSTRACTFifty years have passed since the publication of The tragedy of American Diplomacy, the seminal work by New Left scholar William Appleman Williams. The work fired off one of the most important salvos of historical revisionism, heralding the arrival of the ‘Wisconsin School’ of American historiography. In examining the expansionist and consuming tendencies of American power and capital, Williams ushered in a movement which has left an enduring mark. Despite attacks on its credibility and an assortment of drawbacks, Tragedy remains a strong antidote to triumphalist narratives of American history, and pressingly important in the current political climate.

AbstractFor much of their childhood and adult life, the twelve surviving children of William the Silent were separated linguistically and geographically. Many of the children forged important relationships with male primary carers who were not their biological parents. This paper explores the children's correspondence with their biological father William and with paternal figures to understand competing forms of familial authority among William's children. This paper places particular interest on analysis of the gendered negotiation of paternal bonds in the letters of William's sons and daughters, as they established multiple relationships with father figures during their childhood.
