There are concerns that the financial crisis in Greece negatively affected the management of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) among patients with hematological malignancies (HM). A working group (WG) was formed to explore the situation and make recommendations. A questionnaire was created and distributed to physicians caring for patients with HM, to gather information in a standardized manner on prescribing physicians, patient characteristics, availability of diagnostics, antifungal treatment practices and the conditions and particularities of Greek hospitals. A total of 141 physicians from 36 hematology units and laboratories located in 26 Greek hospitals participated. Regarding hospitalization conditions, only 56% reported that their patients were treated in isolated single or double bed rooms, 22% reported availability of HEPA filters, 47% reported construction works in progress, and an alarming 18% reported the presence of birds on open windows. Regarding diagnosis, only 31% reported availability of biomarkers for diagnosis of IFIs, 76% reported that CT scans were performed in a timely fashion, 42% reported prompt availability of broncho-alveolar lavage, and only 6% availability of therapeutic drug monitoring. Of concern, 26% of the responders reported non-availability of some antifungals. In conclusion, significant challenges exist for the optimal management of IFIs in patients with HM in Greece.

(1) Background: Various guidelines address patient preparation and its importance for venous blood sampling, such as the GP41 guideline issued by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the blood collection guidelines published by the World Health Organisation. Recommendations provided by national societies or international organisations in the field of radiology, such as The Contrast Media Safety Committee of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology, or in the field of laboratory medicine, such as the Working Group for Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE) of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) and the Latin American Working Group for Preanalytical Phase (WG-PRE-LATAM) of the Latin American Confederation of Clinical Biochemistry (COLABIOCLI), also guide this practice. There is a notable lack of understanding regarding the viewpoints held by non-laboratory healthcare professionals concerning the significance of patient preparation for laboratory testing and the impact of typical factors associated with patient preparation. This study endeavours to bridge this gap by assessing the attitude of non-laboratory healthcare professionals in Lithuania regarding these pivotal aspects. (2) Methods: A self-designed anonymous questionnaire was disseminated among 141 public healthcare institutions in Lithuania. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was evaluated by computing Cronbach’s alpha. Descriptive statistics were utilised for the variables, while comparisons of attitude among groups were conducted using Mann–Whitney U (for two groups) or Kruskal–Wallis (for more than two groups) for categorical and discrete indicators. The Kruskal–Wallis post-hoc test was employed for pairwise comparisons. A significance level of p-Value < 0.05 was applied to establish statistical significance. (3) Results: A total of 158 respondents constituted two distinct groups of healthcare professionals: nurses and physicians. Most of the participants either agreed or strongly agreed that patient preparation could introduce bias into laboratory test results. Professionals with less than 20 years of work experience or those who attended training in patient preparation for sampling within a 5-year timeframe exhibited stronger agreement regarding different preanalytical factors in patient preparation and their impact on laboratory test results compared to their counterparts. (4) Conclusions: Non-laboratory healthcare professionals who participated in this survey consider proper patient preparation for laboratory testing to be a significant step towards obtaining accurate test results. They also recognize the commonly acknowledged preanalytical factors as important for ensuring reliable test results. However, attitudes towards the importance of several preanalytical factors vary depending on whether non-laboratory healthcare professionals have more or less than 20 years of work experience, as well as whether they have attended any training on this topic within the last five years or have never attended such training.

This study determined whether susceptibility to opening of the permeability transition pore (PTP) varies according to muscle phenotype represented by the slow oxidative soleus (Sol) and superficial white gastrocnemius (WG). Threshold for Ca2+-induced mitochondrial Ca2+ release following PTP opening was determined with a novel approach using permeabilized ghost myofibers. Threshold values for PTP opening were approximately threefold higher in fibers from WG compared with those from Sol (124 ± 47 vs. 30.4 ± 6.8 pmol Ca2+/mU citrate synthase). A similar phenomenon was also observed in isolated mitochondria (threshold: 121 ± 60 vs. 40 ± 10 nmol Ca2+/mg protein in WG and Sol), indicating that this was linked to differences in mitochondrial factors between the two muscles. The resistance of WG fibers to PTP opening was not related to the expression of putative protein modulators (cyclophilin D, adenylate nucleotide translocator-1, and voltage-dependent anion channels) or to difference in respiratory properties and occurred despite the fact that production of reactive oxygen species, which promote pore opening, was higher than in the Sol. However, endogenous matrix Ca2+ measured in mitochondria isolated under resting baseline conditions was approximately twofold lower in the WG than in the Sol (56 ± 4 vs. 111 ± 11 nmol/mg protein), which significantly accounted for the resistance of WG. Together, these results reveal fiber type differences in the sensitivity to Ca2+-induced PTP opening, which may constitute a physiological mechanism to adapt mitochondria to the differences in Ca2+ dynamics between fiber types.

This paper experimentally presented the water stability of magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) modified by nano-Al2O3 (NA), nano-Fe2O3 (NF) and water glass (WG). The optimal addition of 6% NA, 2% NF and 1% WG significantly improved the water stability of MPC mortar by 86%, 101% and 96% after 28 days of water immersion, respectively. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were used to analyze the water stability of MPC modified by NA, NF and WG. The results of the micrograph and composition analysis revealed that the proper amount of NA, NF or WG could fill the micro pores and improve the hydration of interior structures of MPC mortar. Thus, the microstructural compactness was satisfied to keep a good water stability of MPC mortar.

This study examines the mineralogy, texture, and weathering grades of intrusive igneous rocks from northern Pakistan, as well as their impacts on physical and strength properties. In comparison to felsic rocks, mafic and intermediate rocks have lower cumulative proportions of quartz, feldspar, and plagioclase, as well as higher specific gravity, strength (i.e., UCS and R-value), and UPV values. Similarly, samples with anhedral grain shapes, irregular boundaries, and fine to medium grain sizes (UD, ANS, and CGN) exhibited greater strength values, with compressive strengths of 121, 118, and 91 MPa and tensile strengths of 11, 9, and 12 MPa, respectively. The physical and strength properties of the investigated samples corresponded well with the weathering grades assigned to them, such as fresh (WG-I), slightly weathered (WG-II), and highly weathered (WG-III). That is, as the grade increased from WG-I to WG-III, the porosity and water absorption increased (0.28% and 0.72%, respectively), whereas the specific gravity, compressive strength, and tensile strength decreased (2.04, 20, and 2.5 MPa, respectively, for CGA). Although the presence of quartz impacts rock strength, no significant association was found between the strength and the maximum and mean grain sizes of other minerals.

The aim of the study was to evaluate egg production in three heavy Japanese quail populations created and reared in the Poultry Breeding Unit of the Trakia University – Bulgaria, marked as WG, GG and GL. In the experiments, 160 female birds from populations WG and GG, and 96 female birds from population GL were tested up to the 6th production month. The main egg production traits were controlled. The highest egg production for the period was demonstrated in group GL (79.84±4.46%), followed by group GG (76.33±3.40%) and group WG (72.11±4.16%). Quails from the WG group were outlined with least efficient feed conversion per egg (74.49±1.21 g feed), while those from the GL group: with the most efficient one – 64.93±1.41 g (p<0.01). The highest average egg weight in descending order was observed in the WG group (14.04±0.32 g), GG group (13.65±0.27 g) and GL group (12.79±0.29 g). The Japanese quail populations created and maintained at the Trakia University showed a potentially good egg production for the production type they belonged to, which makes them attractive for use in interline hybridisation schedules, including for production of autosexing stock layers.

Goal. To analyze the number of insecticides and acaricides during the cultivation of crops in Ukraine and in the central part of the Right Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine and to determine the degree of danger of their application. Methods. Analytical, economic and statistical, comparative analysis. The analysis of the amount of chemical plant protection products for 2018—2020 was conducted according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Ecotoxicological assessment of 23 chemicals was performed using the Methodologies of the Institute of Plant Protection of NAAS of Ukraine according to the safety data sheet of the preparations and the properties of the active ingredient. The assessment of the level of potential danger of insecticides and acaricides was performed according to the integrated classification of pesticides according to the degree of danger of their application, taking into account indicators of pesticide toxicity (LD50) and their half-life (T50) in soil. Results. In 2018—2020, on average, 1,750.5 thousand kg/ year of chemical pesticides were used in Ukraine, including 279.1 thousand kg in the territory of the Central Forest Steppe. The most common in Ukraine are preparations based on active agent chlorpyrifos (743.0 thousand kg/ year), active agent dimethoate (95 thousand kg/ year) and active agent lambda-cyhalothrin (80.2 thousand kg/ year), which are stable in soil and according to the indicator of acute oral toxicity are classified as hazard classes 2 and 3. The most common acaricides against ticks are those based on active agent clofentezine and pyridaben (3.01 and 3.08 thousand kg/ year, respectively). It was found that insecticides Danadim Mix, EC (Dimetoat, 400 g/ l + Gamma-Cyhalothrin, 4 g/ l), Lamdex, mc.s. (Dimetoat, 400 g/ l + Gamma-Cyhalothrin, 4 g/ l), Rimon Fast, SC (Novaluron, 50 g/ l + Bifenthrin, 50 g/ l), Cezar e.c. (Bifenthrin, 100 g/ l), Shaman, EC (Chlorpyrifos, 500 g/ l + Cypermethrin, 50 g/ l) and acaricide Sunmite, m.p. (Pyridabem, 200 g/ kg) with LD50 55—160 mg/ kg. Most preparations are highly resistant chemical compounds with half-life (Т50) in soil 51-386 days. These are: Aktara 25WG, w.g. (Thiamethoxam, 250 g/ kg), Ampligo 150 ZC, FC (Chlorantraniliprole, 100 g/ l + Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 50 g/ l), Voliam Flexi 300 SC, e.c. (Thiamethoxam, 200 g/ l + Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 100 g/ l), Engio 247 SC, s.c. (Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 106 g/ l + Thiamethoxam, 141 g/ l), Coragen 20, s.c. (Chlorantraniliprole, 200 g/ l), Lamdex, mc.s. (Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 50 g/ l), Mavrik, BE (Tau-fluvalinate, 240 g/ l), Rimon Fast, SC (Novaluron, 50 g/ l + Bifenthrin, 50 g/ l), Cezar e.c. (Bifenthrin, 100 g/ l), Shaman e.c. (Chlorpyrifos, 500 g/ l + Cypermethrin, 50 g/ l), Apollo, s.c. (Clofentesin, 500 g/ l), Sunmite, m.p. (Pyridaben, 200 g/ кg). Conclusions. In Ukraine and in the Central Forest-Steppe the amounts of chemical plant protection products are considerable, which increases the emergence of environmental risks in agrophytocenosis. Most pesticides contain active agent with a high rate of acute oral toxicity and are classified as hazard class 2. According to the degree of danger level, preparations Decis Profi WG (Deltamethin, 250 g/ кg), Decis f-Lux 25 EC (Deltamethin, 25 g/ l), Kalipso 480 SC (Thiacloprid, 480 g/ l), Kormoran, EC (Novaluron, 100 g/ l + Acetamiprid, 80 g/ l), Proclaim 5 SG (Emamectin benzoane, 50 g/ кg), Rubizh, e.c. (Dimetoat, 400 g/ l) belong to low-hazardper (danger level 6—7). According to the combination of ecotoxicological and sanitary-hygienic indicators, dangerous pesticides (3 degree) include preparations Ampligo 150 ZC, FK (Chlorantraniliprole, 100 g/ l + Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 50 g/ l), Engio 247 SC, s.c. (Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 106 g/ l + Thiamethoxam, 141 g/ l) and Masai, s.p. (Tebufenpyrad, 200 g/ кg), very dangerous — (2 degree) — Lamdex, mc.s. (Lambda-Cyhalothrin, 50 g/ l), Rimon Fast, SC (Novaluron, 50 g/ l + Bifenthrin, 50 g/ l), Cezar e.c. (Bifenthrin, 100 g/ l) and Sunmite, m.p. (Pyridabem 200 g/ kg). These preparations are highly toxic and decompose in agrophytocenosis slowly, and therefore their use should be limited to reduce environmental risks.

Background:Objectives:To compare clinical characteristics, pregnancies, and treatments during pregnancies of seronegative and seropositive APS, and analyse factors associated with adverse obstetrical outcomes. Methods:Inclusion criteria were: (1) thrombotic arterial and/or venous; and /or obstetrical primary clinical APS (Sydney criteria); (2) absence of conventional antiphospholipid antibodies; (3) presence of at least one non-conventional APL among IgA ACL, IgA antiB2GPI, anti-vimentin G/M, anti-annexin V G/M, anti-PE G/M, anti-PS/PT G/M antibodies. The exclusion criteria were: (1) seropositive APS with conventional APS; (2) associated SLE or SLE like (SLE features and / or positive antinuclear autoantibodies); (3) other systemic connective tissue disease (Sjogren’s syndrome, systemic sclerosis, myositis).Results:187 women (mean 33±5 years) with seronegative APS were included from 12 centers in the world and compared to 285 patients with seropositive APS. Seronegative APS have mostly obstetrical phenotypes rather than venous thrombosis in comparison to seropositive APS. The maternal and fetal outcomes and the rates of live births were not significantly different in seronegative and seropositive APS, except for higher rates of intrauterine deaths (15% vs 5%; p=0.03) and lower live birth term (36±3 vs 38±3 weeks of gestation; p=0.04) in the seropositive APS group. The cumulative incidence of adverse obstetrical events was significantly improved in treated seronegative APS vs untreated ones (log rank<0.05), whereas there was no difference between patients who received aspirin or aspirin-LMWH combinationConclusion:Patients with clinical manifestations of APS without conventional APL should undergo testing for non-criteria APL. The diagnosis of seronegative APS could be important for a better care of these patients.Table 1.Characteristics of seronegative and seropositive APS women.Seronegative APSN=187Seropositive APSN=285APS featuresThrombotic APS Arterial APS (n;%)0105 (37)* Venous APS (n;%)9 (6)154 (54)*Obstetrical APS (n;%)168 (89)89 (31)*Mix APS (n;%)8 (4)16 (6)Non criteria features (n;%)16 (9)141 (49)*Obstetrical history Miscarriages (n;%)66 (35)18 (6)* Intrauterine deaths (n;%)60 (32)46 (16)* Prematurity <34 wg (n;%)43 (23)31 (11)*Table 2.Pregnancy outcome and treatment in seronegative and seropositive APS.Seronegative APS pregnanciesN=108Seropositive APS pregnanciesN=75Thrombotic APS Arterial APS (n;%)020 (27)* Venous APS (n;%)8 (7)42 (56)*Obstetrical APS (n;%)93 (86)36 (48)*Mix APS (n;%)6 (6)18 (24)Aspirin (n;%) / Aspirin alone95 (88) / 32 (30)57 (76)* / 2 (3)*LMWH isocoagulant amounts (n;%)63 (58)39 (52)Aspirin-LMWH (n;%)65 (60)55 (73)Preeclampsia/HELLP syndrome (n;%)7 (7)12 (16)*IUGR (n;%)5 (5)7 (10)Fetal loss (n;%)33 (31)22 (29)Miscarriage / Intrauterine deaths23 (21) / 5 (5)11 (15) / 11 (15)*Prematurity<34 weeks of gestation (n;%)6 (6)9 (12)Term of fetal loss (weeks gestation)10±813±7Live births (n;%)75 (69)53 (70)Term of live birth (weeks gestation)38±336±3*Disclosure of Interests: :None declared

Approximately 25 % of diagnosed renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have already metastasized. Due to poor prognosis of metastatic RCC, there is an urgent need for new therapies and prognostic and diagnostic markers to identify high-risk patients. Here microRNAs (miRNAs) might be promising new molecular biomarkers. For the clear cell RCC subtype (ccRCC) a comprehensive miRNA expression profile was already established. In this profiling several ccRCC-associated, predominantly down-regulated miRNAs were identified. In the present study, epigenetic mechanisms were identified to play a significant role in the down regulation of miR-141 and miR-145 in RCC cell lines. In addition, a strong methylation of the corresponding promoter regions was detected at molecular level. In RCC cells a tumor suppressive effect of these miRNAs was shown by decreasing migration (both) and invasion (miR-141) and furthermore, co overexpression of both miRNAs resulted in a cooperative effect with increased inhibition of cell migration. Several new oncogenic targets of miR-141 and miR-145 were identified by further investigations. Here the two miRNAs again showed a cooperative effect, as demonstrated by a significantly increased inhibition of HS6ST2 and LOX expression. In ccRCC tissue the expression of LOX and MAP4K4 was strongly enhanced on mRNA level compared to normal tissue. In the subsequent tissue microarray analysis of protein expression, LOX and MAP4K4 showed a prognostic impact for the overall survival of patients with ccRCC. These results illustrate a huge impact of epigenetically dysregulated miRNAs and of their specific targets on tumor-associated processes. Furthermore, the network of epigenetics, miRNAs and their respective targets will offer a number of diagnostic and prognostic capabilities, but will also provide many opportunities for the development of new therapeutic strategies.

In this doctoral thesis, we report on five original studies that use three différent non-invasive cardiovascular imaging techniques:- In an ex vivo study of human coronary arteries, we show that 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scan isnot capable of distinguishing between différent components of plaques. Indeed, it is impossible todifferentiate between fibrous and lipid plaques. Our study also showed that intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) should not be used as thé référence method in studies of plaque composition, since this techniquealso suffers from numerous limitations.- Our study of thé efficacy of thrombo-aspiration showed a significant benefit with effective extraction ofthrombus during thrombo-aspiration at thé acute phase of ST élévation myocardial infarction (STEMI),notably with a réduction of thé extent of no-reflow and of infarct size as evaluated by magnetic résonanceimaging (MRI). Productive thrombo-aspiration was shown in our study to be an independent predictor offinal infarct size. Effective extraction of thrombotic material could be considered in thé cathlab as acriterion for evaluating thé success of thé thrombo-aspiration procédure.- Our study of acute coronary syndromes with normal coronary arteries confirmed thé utility of MRI inestablishing thé etiology of this clinical présentation, and made it possible to establish an etiologicaldiagnosis in two-thirds of patients. We also observed excellent outcomes in thé third of patients in whomMRI did not find any myocardial anomalies. Larger studies are warranted to confirm thèse findings.- Based on cardiac MRI performed in patients presenting a first épisode of STEMI, we established athreshold value of troponin that predicts thé occurrence of no-reflow.- Lastly, using speckle-tracking analysis, we demonstrated impaired systolic right ventricular function inpatients with intermediate to high risk pulmonary embolism (PE), evaluated by altérations in longitudinalstrain values at thé level of thé right ventricle, compared to a control group of patients with low risk PE

AbstractTraversing the river Seine in Paris is challenging for inland navigation vessels due to the density and diversity of local traffic and the variety of manoeuvres to be encountered in a confined environment. The waterway authority, Voies Navigables de France (VNF), commissioned a study to assess the relevance of the current regulations when present and future vessels of varying types and dimensions cross Paris. This paper describes the use of fast time and real time simulations to assess the maximum dimensions of ships crossing the Seine in Paris. In a first phase, fast time simulations were executed with a track controller, which allowed to identify bottlenecks on the full length (12 km) of the river Seine in Paris. Based on those results, critical scenarios were selected to be tested on a full mission bridge simulator by skippers familiar with the crossing of Paris. Inspired by PIANC INCOM WG 141 Detailed Design and Safety and Ease Approaches, the main challenges related to the simulation setup and the assessment methodology are presented and discussed in this paper. The simulations have shown that the main bottlenecks are related to the succession of passages under narrow bridges with non-aligned openings. The maximum water levels for which safe passage is possible, were determined for each ship type and compared with the existing regulations. Finally, recommendations were formulated, which were then discussed with VNF, end users and stakeholders.

Prior to the submission for public comment of the proposed European Standard for Unfired Pressure Vessels EN 13445, there was a long debate on acceptance criteria for radiographic testing. The committee CEN/TC 54/WG E/SG Testing initially developed criteria after wide consultation and in the absence of any other available CEN standard. When the acceptance criteria developed by CEN/TC 121 ‘Welding’ became available, the concern was whether they were workable and could achieve comparable accept/reject rates with those developed by the committee CEN/TC 54/WG E/SG Testing and could thus be adopted in place of them.

Resumo:
Abstract Summary In the early 1980's, waterflooding began in Belridge Diatomite (BD), a thick, highly porous, and tight reservoir in California. Over the years, differing injection strategies lead to mixed results. Today, there are approximately 1,900+ injectors and 2,600+ producers in the Belridge Diatomite Waterflood (BDWF) and setting injection and production well rate targets to improve recovery is extremely challenging. Multiple teams using different methods for estimating rate targets in different parts of the field adds complexity to the overall field management strategy. The main objective of this work was to simplify field management by using a quantitative, streamline-based method to establish and quantify injector-producer relationships, reduce human bias, while improving the efficiency and flood performance in the West Grande (WG) area of the BDWF subject to key surface and subsurface constraints. The pilot test targeted 52 injection strings and 142 producers in Southern WG with an approximate total water injection rate of 10,500 STB/Day and total water and oil production rates of 8,200 STB/D and 700 STB/D, respectively. An important and novel aspect of the work presented here involves constraining the injection well rate targets to surface elevation, injection string communication, 30-day average wellhead pressure, subsurface impairments, and surface injection capacity. On the production side, the constraints were surface elevation, pump runtime, and operational status. This work describes setting well rate targets using a streamline-based workflow while honoring minimum and maximum rates as deduced from the constraints above. Injection and production rates in the WG pilot area were changed four times over nine months in the period May 2020-January 2021. Not withstanding uncertainties in production and watercut measurements and interference due to operational activities, the injection and production rate changes resulted in a reversal of the oil decline observed in the previous year. The improvement in the oil decline honored all key constraints and did not cause WG to experience changes to surface elevation, an important requirement in reservoir management of the highly compressible Diatomite reservoir. Using streamlines to define well patterns based on historical production/injection rates, and considering all patterns simultaneously is a major departure from the one-at-a-time fixed pattern and reservoir team-specific strategy used in the past. Considering that the manual pattern-by-pattern review consumed well over 50% of the time spent by teams trying to improve flood performance, the approach described in the work also represents a significant improvement in productivity and a more agile reservoir management strategy. The ability to include key surface and subsurface constraints in the calculation of well target rates is a novel addition to streamline-based surveillance modeling and a key contribution of this work.

Life extension of aging nuclear power plant components requires knowledge of the properties of the service-exposed materials. For instance, in long term service the tensile and creep properties might decline and the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) might shift towards higher temperatures. Monitoring of structural components in nuclear power plants receives much attention — in particular in the context of lifetime extension of current plants, where the amount of material available for destructive testing is limited. Much effort has therefore been invested in the development of miniature testing techniques that allow characterizing structural materials with small amounts of material. The small punch (SP) test is one of the most widely used of these techniques. It has been developed for nuclear applications but its use is spreading to other industries. Although the SP technique has been used for more than 30 years, there is currently no standard covering its most widely used applications. Within the auspices of ECISS TC 101 “Test methods for steel (other than chemical analysis)” WG 1 is currently developing an EN standard on the “Small Punch Test Method for Metallic Materials”. The standard will address small punch testing for the determination of tensile/fracture properties as well as small punch creep testing. This paper gives an overview of the state-of-the art of the SP tests and describes the scope of the standard under development.

A European collaborative effort has been made to produce a Code of Practice (CoP), with participation from the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) TC11-Working Group on High Temperature Testing of Weldments (WG on HTTW) and EC project CRETE. The prepared CoP is based on the authors’ and project partners’ long years of experience in the subject field of high temperature testing, deformation studies and crack growth on various materials studied in internal, European and international projects. The code is being processed for ISO standardization by the International Institute of Welding (IIW), Select Committee Standardization (SC STAND). Guidelines are established for material and specimen selection. The document aims at giving advice on testing, measurements and analysis of creep crack initiation and growth data for a range of creep brittle to creep ductile materials. It may be used for material selection criteria and inspection requirements for damage tolerant applications. In quantitative terms, it can be used to assess the individual and combined effects of metallurgical, fabrication, operating temperature, and loading conditions on welded components for high temperature service. The present paper reports on the standardisation of high temperature crack initiation and crack growth testing in weldments. The material behaviour in service, including significance of creep and loading, substantiates the testing and data analyses procedure for design as well as fitness-for-purpose assessment.

The cladding of an RPV (Reactor Pressure Vessel) at the inner surface may be subjected to a plastic yielding due to a high thermal stress under some severe overcooling events, while the stress in base metal remains elastic. The stress intensity factor estimation at the deepest crack tip of an embedded crack (EC) or a surface crack (SC) under such loadings is essential in the integrity assessment of an RPV. However, an elasto-plastic FE analysis is required to obtain the stress intensity factor on this problem generally. A solution for an under-clad crack (UCC) was developed by EDF based on numerous 2D FE computations. This paper proposes a simplified estimation scheme which takes the yielding of cladding into account. This scheme estimates the stress intensity factor at the deepest crack tip of an embedded crack or a surface crack. It is assumed that the stress singularity does not exist at the shallowest crack tip in the cladding. To estimate the stress intensity factor of an embedded crack, the crack shape is replaced by a semi-elliptical one to utilize existing solutions of SC. Case studies to examine the proposed estimation scheme were carried out for an UCC and SC subjected to the SBLOCA, SLB and PTS transients, which were defined by a international round robin PROSIR (Probabilistic Structural Integrity of a PWR Reactor Pressure Vessel) project being conducted by OECD/NEA/IAGE-WG. It was found that the proposed scheme gives a reasonable estimation of the stress intensity factor for an UCC and a SC.
