Resumo:
Abstract In this paper we provide an overview of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and a review of the published literature in order to provide a picture of the current state of the evidence on the performance of CEM. Clinical research was fairly sparse following the demonstration of the technique in research subjects about 18 years ago, but the number of publications rapidly increased following commercialization 9 years ago, and even more so in the last 5 years. Initial studies compared CEM with mammography, and clearly showed that CEM could detect cancers not visible on mammography. More recent studies have primarily focused on comparing the performance of CEM with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in selected cohorts. These studies have almost uniformly shown CEM and MRI to have similar sensitivities, with sensitivity and accuracy showing more variability from study to study. With increasing clinical use, a large number of retrospective reviews of CEM have appeared, showing utility of CEM in the diagnostic clinical setting. Most recently, a small number of papers have been published looking at CEM for high-risk and dense breast screening, two potentially large applications of the technique, showing it to outperform mammography in both populations. CEM has clearly been shown to have clinical utility, but more prospective studies, including screening studies, are needed to further evaluate its performance, especially in comparison with MRI.

A pot experiment was conducted, using three soyabean (Giycinc max (L.) Merrill) cultivars (Forrest, Prima and A5409) inoculated at planting, with no (0) and two Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains (WB1 and WB74). The objectives were to investigate the effect of cultivar-rhizobial strain combinations on biomass and N derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) and to compare the atmospheric N uptake determined by the isolope technique, with the conventional method.

South African soils generally lack native Bradyrhizobium strains that nodulate and fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) in soybeans (Glycine max L.). It is therefore very important to inoculate soybeans with products that contain effective Bradyrhizobium strains as active ingredients. In this study, a field experiment was conducted on two bioclimatic zones in South Africa during the 2019/2020 season to assess the effect of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain WB74 inoculant formulation on nitrogen fixation, growth and yield improvement in soybeans. The first bioclimatic zone was characterized by a sandy clay loam soil, whereas the second bioclimatic zone has a sandy loam soil. The results showed that inoculation of soybeans with both peat and liquid formulations of Bradyrhizobium japonicum WB74 increased nitrogen uptake, which resulted in yield increase. The amount of N fixed was measured as 15N isotopes and increased with all treatments compared to the uninoculated control in both liquid and peat inoculant formulations. In bioclimatic zone A, slightly better results were obtained using the liquid formulation (1.79 t ha−1 for liquid compared to 1.75 t ha−1 for peat treatments), while peat formulations performed better in bioclimatic zone B (1.75 t ha−1 for peat compared to 1.71 t ha−1 for liquid treatments). In both areas higher yields were obtained with the formulations used in this study compared to the registered standards (treatment T3). The findings in this study provide vital information in the development and application of formulated microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture in South Africa.

Inoculation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] with rhizobia strains is a low-cost investment which can increase yields of smallholder farmers in Mozambique. The performance of four Bradyrhizobium strains was evaluated to identify the best strain to inoculate soybean grown in different agro-ecologies. Field experiments were conducted in three ecological zones in 2018 and 2019 using soybean variety Zamboane inoculated with Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens strain USDA 110, B. japonicum strains USDA 136, USDA 442 and WB74, and a non-inoculated control in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Indigenous rhizobia populations at the sites ranged from 9.0 x 101 to 2.2 x 103 cells g−1 soil. All four strains increased nodulation, but USDA 110 was superior at two sites with low native rhizobia population, whereas USDA 442 and WB74 were the best at the site with relatively high native rhizobia population. On an average, the strains doubled the number of nodules and increased the dry weight up to 5.8-fold. Inoculation increased shoot dry weight and N content at podding, plant biomass, and number of pods plant−1 across sites but the effects of the strains on seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight were inconsistent. Shoot N content did not differ among inoculant strains and ranged from 15.70 g kg−1 in the control to 38.53 g kg−1 across inoculation. All four strains increased soybean grain yield across sites in 2018 but USDA 110 outperformed the other strains and was also the best at one of the two sites in 2019. Grain yield responses associated with USDA 110 ranged from 552 kg ha−1 (56%) to 1,255 kg ha−1 (76%). Positive correlations between nodule dry weight plant−1 and seed yield, and number of pods plant−1 and grain yield were observed. The gross margin ranged from $343.50–$606.80 ha−1 for the control, but it increased to $688.34–$789.36 when inoculants were applied. On an average, inoculation increased gross margin by $182.57-$395.35 ha−1 over that of non-inoculated control in 2018 but drought stress in 2019 reduced the benefit. The results demonstrate that USDA 110 was the best inoculant strain and has the potential of increasing smallholder productivity and net returns.

Thesis (MTech. degree in Agriculture.)--Tshwane University of Technology, 2011.
This study evaluated plant growth and symbiotic performance of four promiscuous-nodulating soybean genotypes and three commercial varieties supplied with a peat-based inoculant of Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain WB74 at three field sites in Mozambique and a pot experiment in South Africa. The sole aim was to assess whether these promiscuous-nodulating soybean genotypes can benefit from inoculation.
