Although Americans of Middle Eastern origin—be they of Arab, Turkish, Armenian, Sephardic Jewish, Assyrian, Greek, or Central Asian heritage—comprise one of the fastest growing groups in the United States, their music may seem invisible to the American musical connoisseur. Many of the recordings of Middle Eastern American musicians are produced and distributed within community networks. Walk into an Armenian grocer in Watertown, Massachusetts or into a Lebanese audio-video store in Dearborn, Michigan, and you will find hundreds of hours of music by Middle Eastern Americans for your listening pleasure. Walk into your public library and you may not find a thing. Middle Eastern music made in America is simply not widely available on the major or alternative recording labels to which we habitually turn for our fare of world music.

Schindler's Free Public Library competition project of 1920 is analysed. Archival documents are interpreted and an analytic model is constructed. Schindler's standing as a Modernist is considered and his early career is rehearsed, especially his involvement with Frank Lloyd Wright. The formal analysis focuses on the use of symmetry. An interpretation of Schindler's employment of the diagonal axis in the Library is proffered. Historical precedents for diagonal butterfly symmetry in the English free school and the Arts and Crafts movement are examined. A method of analysis using the partial ordering of subsymmetries of the square is applied to the floor plans In conclusion, the influence of the Library project on Schindler's later work is surveyed.

This article calls for greater attention within urban history to the ‘civic economy of the book’. By means of a case study of the Manchester Free Public Library and its context, examining the internal workings of the library system and its impact on the broader cultural life of the city, it is argued that the nineteenth-century public library, if not an especially successful disciplinary institution, may yet have been a significant mechanism of cultural disempowerment.

Studying the choral works of the great composers of the past is always a worthy endeavor. For those aspiring to create an excellent high school choral program, it is critical to a student's musical foundation and heritage. Choral educators who teach high school are often bombarded with the most recently published new choral works, when they have a trove of excellent pieces right at their fingertips through websites like the Choral Public Domain Library (CPDL), all available at no cost. This project will explore the pedagogical reasons why this canon of public domain choral music should be taught at the high school level. A thorough guide to CPDL and an anthology of 200 works available on CPDL will provide the conductor with resources for programming this music.

Though choral music in the public domain is free to all, publishers still publish this music and adhere copyright claims. This can create mistrust of legitimate editions on CPDL; why are they available at no cost when publishers are claiming copyright on similar editions? These issues will be thoroughly discussed in this project.

For any given work on CPDL, there may be multiple editions available on the site. Choosing the right edition requires knowledge about basic editorial principles, especially for works written during the Renaissance period. A detailed discussion of these principles will provide the conductor with the tools needed to choose the best edition for his or her ensemble.

The purpose of this essay was to explore how library staff work with the creation of a teen space. We have taken into consideration teen’s spatial needs and how the library staff have worked to satisfy these needs, as well as how the space can be designed to minimize conflicts that can occur between different library attendees. The method that’s been used was semi-structured interviews with library staff from four different libraries who’ve worked with creating or renovating a teen space. The results show that young library patrons use the examined teen spaces both as a retreat- and interaction space. Results show that teens are in need of a free zone where they can be themselves, express their opinions, be creative and explore. To satisfy this need the library staff have worked with the room’s placement and spatial barriers, furniture and equipment. Despite this the analyzed teen spaces cannot be fully considered free zones because they are not completely free from adult supervision. At the libraries where conflict arose between teens and other visitors, the teen space was set apart and screened off from the rest of the library spaces. These actions demonstrate that spatial solutions are not enough to solve conflicts, but rather the staff at these libraries would have to work with their own attitude towards teens as well as with the library visitors´. Results imply that it is not impossible to create a free zone for teens and at the same time design a space that encourages low-intensity meetings. Two of the examined libraries have in fact managed to create a low-intensity meeting place on a smaller scale. Results also indicate that good human and social conditions are just as important as the teen space to make the library into a functioning meeting place. The study demonstrates that teens' participation is an important requirement in the procedures if a library is going to be successful with their renovation. Teens contribute in fact with meaningful information of how their own room should be designed.

The study investigates the establishment and development of the Kimberley Africana Library and its mother institution, the Kimberley Public Library within the broader social, economical and political environment in which they took place. The history of these institutions is inextricable until 1984 when the public and Africana sections of the Library were separated and the Kimberley Africana Library was opened to the public in 1986. It was the exceptional collections of Africana and rare books which distinguished the Kimberley Public Library and the main factor which bound the history of these two institutions. The Kimberley Public Library and its progeny the Kimberley Africana Library are the products of a new industrialised era which came about after the discovery of diamonds in South Africa. They emanated from an environment which produced the new wealth of the country, an almost uncharted region which was relatively new to the established British colonies. In order to place the origins of and motivation for the establishment of the Kimberley Public Library and the Kimberley Africana Library in perspective, it is necessary in this study also to include an overview of the development of the diamond mining industry in Kimberley. This development, peculiar as it was to Kimberley, gave rise to the type of social and cultural milieu in which the Public Library was founded by the immigrants to this area. Also included in the study is a brief survey of the development of the library movement in South Africa and the role played by the Kimberley Public Library in the growth of this movement and in the expansion of public library services to the people of the country. The history of the Kimberley Public/Africana Library which covers a period of more than a century is divided into three distinct periods, namely that which deals with the institution as a Subscription Library from 1882 until 1960 and, from 1961 as a free library under the jurisdiction of the Kimberley Municipality and affiliated to the Cape Provincial Library Service. The third period concerns the dichotomisation of the Kimberley Public Library and the establishment of the Kimberley Africana Library in 1986 to house the Library’s renowned collection of Africana and rare books. This section also deals with the period after 1994 when the Kimberley Libraries functioned under the new political dispensation in South Africa. Emphasis is laid on the formation, nature and scope of the Africana Collection which was the raison d’etre for the establishment of the Kimberley Africana Library and the most significant of the items in the collection are broadly described. The study concludes with an assessment of the challenges the Kimberley Africana Library faces and suggests ways and means of resolving these. An Appendix entitled The Founders and the Builders is added in order to elaborate on the exceptional contributions of several prominent Committee members and Librarians who controlled and managed these institutions from their inception in 1882 until 2008.

AbstractThe Duchesses Elisabeth Sophie Marie (1683–1767) and Philippine Charlotte of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel (1716–1801) both owned substantial collections of several thousand books. Elisabeth’s library primarily contained theological literature, including 1200 Bibles and a unique collection of texts by Martin Luther, which she used to compose theological pamphlets. In addition, she granted access to her collection to selected scholars who, in turn, used the holdings for their research. Although more diversified, Philippine Charlotte’s library functioned as a similar meeting place for scholars of the region and beyond. Moreover, her papers offer an insight into the interaction between her book use and the writing that she did in her free time. In contrast to the usage practices of the neighbouring ducal library, Philippine Charlotte was free to consult the books she wanted in the privacy of her chambers for as long as she wanted to and, most importantly, without fear of being judged. It is certain that, in both cases, the privacy of the library gave the women the freedom to pursue intellectual interests, which were hard to combine with their public role as Duchesses. The fact that both women expanded their libraries considerably after becoming widows only supports the observation that private and “leisure” time could take more space. Based on these findings, this chapter argues that women’s learning and knowledge production in the early modern period both benefitted from and, in many cases, needed privacy.

In the summer of 2022, Boston Public Library received a grant to improve accessand visibility to library resources in nine underserved communities. The project served as an opportunity to bring the library’sservices and spaces beyond traditional boundaries to connect with the public in new ways. Community engagement served as a fundamental bedrock of the development of the work, from initial interviews and informal gatherings, to design and construction with a local youth organization, to post-occupancy surveys and operational memos. More than an end product,Free to All is an embodiment of a design process, one deeply engaged with members of the public throughout all aspects ofthe project’s development.

The aim of the paper is to present an advantage of using internet library for students who study Romanian language and literature in Serbia. In fact, due to the lack of new modern books in Romanian language in Serbia which would get interested students to read, professors at the Faculty of Philosophy, from Department of Romanian Language and Literature have made a list of websites and databases where students can read books. The research showed that students increasingly less use reading room and library at the Faculty. Necessary literature they try to found on the Internet. The research results showed that two main reasons contribute to this. The first reason is that students rarely use the library because they cannot take books with them home (library has one copy of the book), and the second reason is that library does not have the necessary books. Desiring to as much as possible students read and use professional literature, professors tried to make a list of Web sites and databases on which student can for free, at any time and from any computer read books in Romanian language about Romanian history, culture and literature. Depending on the specific library, a user may be able to access magazine articles, books, papers, images, sound files, and videos. Lists of Web sites are available to students on social networks, online consultations or in specially created group on Facebook. The teachers are aware of the impact and opportunities that the Internet provides, and therefore studying the Romanian language and literature in Serbia must be adapted to the requirements of students.

However, through this new program, research can be shared widely beyond academe with practitioners, corporate researchers, independent scholars, and international readers. This paper will describe how the Smathers Libraries have worked with a corporate partner, BiblioLabs, to leverage online retailers’ discovery engines to promote print versions of ETDs while alerting readers to the free digital versions available in the IR@UF. This paper will also share how alumni, current graduate students, and other campus stakeholders have responded to the pilot of this new service. The Libraries are monitoring referred traffic to the IR and sales data. UF is the first university to contribute content to this effort, but we expect others to follow suit if the data supports the expectations of the University, the Libraries, and our graduates.

Abstract Nonlinear Fourier Analysis (NFA) is a powerful tool for the analysis of hydrodynamic processes. The unique capabilities of NFA include, but are not limited to, the detection of hidden solitons and the detection of modulation instability, which are essential for the understanding of nonlinear phenomena such as rogue waves. However, even though NFA has been applied to many interesting problems, it remains a non-standard tool. Recently, an open source software library called FNFT has been released to the public. (FNFT is short for “Fast Nonlinear Fourier Transforms”.) The library in particular contains code for the efficient numerical NFA of hydrodynamic processes that are approximately governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions. Waves in deep water are a prime example for such a process. In this paper, we use FNFT to perform an exemplary NFA of typhoon data collected by wave buoys at the coast of Taiwan. Our goals are a) to demonstrate the application of FNFT in a practical scenario, and b) to compare the results of a NFA to an analysis based on the conventional linear Fourier transform. The exposition is deliberately educational, hopefully enabling others to use FNFT for similar analyses of their own data.

In this work verification and validation of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models for incompressible flows was performed on the numerical library, Caelus [1]. Caelus is free and open source licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL). The focus of this study is on the verification and validation of the k-ω SST [2, 3], Spalart-Allmaras [4], and realizable k-ε models [5]. The cases used in this work include the zero pressure gradient flat plate, two-dimensional bump in a channel flow, NACA 0012 airfoil, and backward facing step. All cases except the backward facing step include mesh dependency studies. A comprehensive description of the test cases and computed results are provided. The results were, in general, found to be in excellent agreement with external data suggesting that the turbulence model implementations in Caelus are correct. A companion study on verification and validation of a predictor corrector steady-state solver algorithm [6] had similar goals and results as this work.

ABSTRACT Background: The accelerated pace of physical and psychological changes during pregnancy can cause discomfort for pregnant women. Several studies claimed that maternal stress, depression, and anxiety level have a negative impact on birth outcomes. Yoga is a well-known exercise for emotional relaxation therapy. This study aimed to investigate the benefits of prenatal yoga exercise during pregnancy. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The search included Willey Online library, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language, full-text, and free access articles published between 2009 and 2019. The selected articles were appraised by Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: A total of 2,232 articles obtained from the search database, in which 2,093 articles were irrelevant, 95 duplicates, and 24 articles unmet inclusion criteria were excluded. Based on the selected 20 articles, eleven articles obtained A grade, and nine articles obtained B grade with quantitative (RCT, quasi-experiment, cross-sectional) and qualitative (focus group discussion) study designs. For main thematic findings reviewed were physical, psychological, labor process, and fetal benefits of prenatal gentle yoga exercise during pregnancy. Conclusion: Prenatal gentle yoga exercise has benefits for both mother and fetus, especially the psychological well-being of mothers by reducing stress and anxiety. Active participation of husbands is required to enhance the effectiveness of prenatal yoga. Keywords: prenatal gentle yoga, pregnancy, benefit Correspondence: Migita Vidia Amita. Among the pedagogical innovations of recent years, MOOCs are a significant phenomenon in the academic world, via digital learning platforms. The new free courses published on the web are diverse academic content. These supports are qualified as MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) playing the role of providers of documentary knowledge like libraries. The support and support systems offered to MOOC registrants are difficult to design due to their wide opening to the public. Nevertheless, the hoped-for goal is to generate collaboration between the learner and the producer of knowledge, through the communication of content and the personalization of services. With a variety of interfaces, we will evaluate the devices of certain MOOCs to understand the attachment or not of academic uses. We will compare the different services offered to users (students, academics, etc.) by MOOCs such as: MIT, OpenCourseWare, COURSERA and FUN-MOOC in comparison with the library catalogs of the worldCat.org type. We use content assessment techniques from digital MOOC platforms to determine the specifics of the information services contained in these MOOCs. We will highlight characteristics common to the MOOCs studied while highlighting the specificities of each of them, which will have an impact on the aid to be considered. An evaluation of information services, library services, participation services and information retrieval is provided in this article. We will focus our evaluation on the macro-criteria as essential: - personalized access services, library services, participatory services (social networks, etc.), and reference services linked to documentary products. We compare the highlights by focusing on the positive and negative points in relation to these qualification criteria

In 23rd SGEM International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference 2023. STEF92 Technology, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5593/sgem2023v/6.2/s26.68.

A case study for a public library which aim to become nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) is presented. Due to buildings location in the city center of a medium sized municipality from Romania, important site limits have to be considered, as well as other pre-existent conditions. These conditions significantly limit the technological options that can be implemented to ensure nZEB compliance. Also, the destination itself of the building (library with free access to the shelves), imposes a specific energy profile (considering the intrinsic energy demand for its normal operation) and is limiting the inclusion into a very specific nZEB benchmark. Between obligations and possibilities, a cutting-edge package of technical solutions is detailed, which allows the building in operation to produce final energy almost as much as it consumes. However, a paradoxical situation is identified, in the sense that the building does not fit into the nZEB benchmarks, nor into the outlined ZEB benchmarks if the total primary energy is considered (both from conventional and renewable sources), although the implementation of the technical solutions actually lead the building to inclusion towards a CO2 zero-emission building (with a calculated value for the CO2 emissions of 5,26 kgCO2/m2.year and significantly reduced final energy consumption). Thus, a structural problem in the nZEB and ZEB concepts (as defined in the EU framework) is identified, especially in the context of making these concepts mandatory in the EU member states.
