Resumo:

Colin Wesley Ward's professional life played out at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) laboratory on Royal Parade, Parkville, Victoria, where he was a scientist, leader, raconteur, colleague and friend to several generations of staff who worked there. Ward's scientific legacy encompasses large bodies of work on antigenic variation in influenza viruses, the taxonomy of plant viruses, veterinary vaccines and the structure and function of several growth factor receptors. On retirement from CSIRO he continued work on the insulin receptor with colleagues at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, conceived of and founded CSIRO pedia and compiled his family history.

Resumo:

Was heißt es, Colin Ward einen Akt des Denkens (als Schreiben) zu widmen? Für mich bedeutet es, innezuhalten, um die Misopädie der modernen Urbanisierung und des damit verbundenen Schulsystems zu erkennen und aufmerksam zu studieren. Der Ausdruck Misopädie ist verwandt mit Begriffen wie Misogynie und Misanthropie. Er bezeichnet eine Antipathie gegenüber Kindern und Kindheit (vgl. Rollo 2018) und bleibt in der wissenschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung ein großer blinder Fleck. Es geht, anders gesagt, um Adultismus (vgl. Bonnardel 2015; Liebel 2020). Sich mit einem Denker wie Colin Ward zu beschäftigen bedeutet, sich ernsthaft zu bemühen, Kinder und Kindheit lieben zu lernen, indem man erkennt, dass die Moderne Kinder und Kindheit systematischer Unfreiheit, Marginalisierung und Unterdrückung aussetzt. Städte stehen Kindern und Kindheit ausgesprochen gleichgültig gegenüber, wie Ward an diversen Beispielen zeigt. Ich gehe davon aus, dass Misopädie ein Grundpfeiler moderner industrieller Bestrebungen ist, die ihren maßgeblichen Ausdruck in Urbanisierung und Beschulung finden. Es waren nie Fragen der intergenerationellen Nachhaltigkeit oder der Herausbildung von Gemeinschaft, die Stadtplanung und schulische Bildung antrieben. Wards Arbeit sollte jedoch nicht allein als Thematisierung der Unfreiheit von Kindern in ihren städtischen Umwelten verstanden werden. Vielmehr kann man sie als Entschleierung einer unerkannten Dimension der Unfreiheit aller Menschen – egal welchen Alters – gegenüber ihrer Umwelt lesen. Autor*innen wie Colin Ward leisten insofern einen wichtigen Beitrag, als sie dafür sorgen, dass wir nicht vergessen, dass Kinder und Kindheit Teil einer umfassenderen Mensch-Umwelt-Beziehung sind.

Resumo:

In this thesis, a coin from the Hannibalic occupation of Taras is analysed and discussed. The method applied in the analysis is Panofsky’s iconological method, and the theoretical framework has been derived from the research questions themselves in dialogue with modern numismatic research. The focus of the discussion is on the relationship between the coin and its historical context. In the thesis, it is argued that the coin is a didrachm with heavily reduced weight, and that the weight reduction is a result of the financial difficulties caused by the Second Punic War.
Denna uppsats är en analys av ett mynt from Hannibals ockupation av Taras. Den metod som tillämpas i analysdelen är Panofskys ikonologiska metod. Det teoretiska ramverket har sin utgångspunkt i uppsatsens frågeställning, och har utarbetats i dialog med modern numismatisk forskning. Diskussionsdelen fokuserar på förhållandet mellan myntet och dess historiska kontext. This PhD thesis examines the status of ‘expert knowledge’ in the history of U.S. asymmetric, or ‘counterinsurgency’ (COIN), warfare during the last century. The historical rise of expert influence has so far been neglected in the study of wars within the field of International Relations and the thesis will give us an indication of the importance and utility of expert knowledge. With a specific focus on the campaigns in the Philippines (1899-1902), Vietnam (1954-75) and Iraq (2003-11), the central research question guiding the project is as follows: “What were the conditions for the evolution, the constitution and the use of ‘outside’ expert knowledge in U.S. counterinsurgency campaigns?” The thesis claims that military and academic ‘experts’ had a key role in framing and implementing the problem-sets and solutions to these conflicts. They have, in Iraq in particular, played an important part in developing the campaigns’ ex-post-facto justification of success. Within the framework of organisational knowledge production, this knowledge does not necessarily play an instrumental role for the military. Instead, it can also serve a merely symbolic function, demonstrating to the audience and stakeholders within the political environment that the organisation is willing to solve the problems the insurgents pose, but without any interest in long-term utilisation of the knowledge. This thesis argues that across time, from the beginning of the Philippine-American War in 1898 to the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq in 2011, ‘counterinsurgency’ has developed from a tactical and operational tool, used instrumentally to fight insurgencies, to a strategy or even ‘ideology’ in its own right. Whilst the methods or techniques of counterinsurgency remain basically the same, expert knowledge is increasingly used in modern – that is post-World War II – campaigns to support a politico-strategic narrative.

Syftet med denna analys är att främja COIN teorier (counter insurgency) som applicerats som en upprorsåtgärd under boerkrigen. Uppsatsens fokus kommer vara på vikten av dynamiken inom COIN teorierna. Begreppet omfattar åtgärder som vidtas av regeringen i en nation kring hanteringen av uppror. I denna analys kommer även viktiga aspekter av David Kilcullens syn på just teorierna inom COIN och dess användande i boerkrigen att granskas. Kilcullens teorier kring COIN fokuserar främst på den mänskliga säkerheten. Således är det möjligt att påstå att denna analys kommer främst att fokusera på de kritiska boerförhållanden som rått i Sydafrika. Processen utgår bland annat ifrån en kvalitativ textanalys av litteratur som beskriver skeendet. Teorin om kulturskillnader ger ett antal nyckelindikatorer samt källor som används i analysen av materialet. Resultatet visar att det taktiska beslutsfattandet under striderna främst baserades på nyttjande av COIN. Slutligen förs ett resonemang kring teorins taktiska handlande och nytta, samt huruvida analysen visar på gynnande eller destruktiva faktorer i vald taktik av upprorsbekämpning.
The purpose of this analysis is to promote the COIN theories that were applied as a single insurgency operation during the Boer Wars. The essential dynamics of COIN (counter insurgency) will be considered as the analysis also includes actions taken by a nation´s government to contain or suppress counterinsurgency. As well as key aspects of David Kilcullens analysis being specifically concentrated on the COIN theories and its use in the Anglo-Boer Wars, Kilcullens COIN theories also focuses on human security. This analysis will mainly focus on the critical Boer wars taking place in South Africa. It also contemplates the question of why modern COIN theory was considered an alternative in the Anglo-Boer Wars. The process is based on a qualitative textual analysis of relevant literature that vividly describes the action of the war. The theory of cultural differences provides a number of key indicators and sources used in the analysis of the material. The results show that the tactical decision-making used during the conflict was mainly based on COIN theories. Furthermore, a discussion of the operational theory and its usefulness will be presented in this analysis, and whether the analysis identifies a beneficial or destructive scene of chosen COIN tactics.

Le 12 septembre 2002, George Bush profitait d'un discours devant l'Assemblée Générale de l'ONU pour saisir le Conseil de Sécurité et exposer à la communauté internationale ses griefs à l'encontre de Saddam Hussein et de ses armes de destruction massive. Dictée par des impératifs électoraux, cette saisine de l'ONU s'était imposée à la Maison Blanche en raison de l'échec de la propagande néo-conservatrice à convaincre l'opinion publique de la nécessité d'une guerre en Iraq. Celle-ci devant donner corps au concept de « guerre contre le terrorisme » de la future campagne présidentielle, la Maison Blanche avait décidé de s'appuyer sur la crédibilité et la légitimité de l'ONU, pour relancer la propagande et travestir une guerre illégale en un acte de légitime défense, en tenant secret la décision de la guerre.La communauté internationale ne fut ni dupe ni complice de cette supercherie, mais le poids de la relation transatlantique interdit au Royaume-Uni de se désolidariser de l'Amérique et à la France d'user de son droit de veto contre ses alliés. Ces contradictions expliqueront la crise du Conseil de Sécurité de 2003, où, en désaccord, les gouvernants du bloc occidental s’affrontèrent sur la nécessité d’une seconde résolution autorisant la guerre. Cette crise ne fut sans conséquence, ni pour l'administration Bush, ni pour la communauté internationale, et encore moins pour l'ONU, puisqu'une fois enlisés en Iraq, les États-Unis obtiendront du Conseil de Sécurité plusieurs résolutions, sans reconsidérer leur unilatéralisme. Mise en porte à faux, l'Organisation internationale sera prise pour cible et son quartier général en Iraq détruit. On September 12, 2002, George Bush during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly seized the opportunity to submit the Security Council and expose to the International Community his worries concerning Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction. Dictated by election requirements, referring to the United Nations was imposed on the White House because of failing neo-conservative propaganda convincing the public opinion of need for war in Iraq. This was supposed to give body to the upcoming presidential campaign’s concept of “war against terrorism”, the White House had decided to lean on the United Nations credibility and legitimacy to re-launch propaganda and disguise an illegal war into an act of self defence, by keeping the decision of war secret.The International Community was not fooled by or accomplice of this trick, but the weight of the trans-Atlantic relationship forbade the United Kingdom to set itself apart from the United States and for France to use its right to veto against its allies. These contradictions explain the 2003 Security Council crisis, where, by disagreeing the western governments faced one another on the necessity of a second resolution authorizing war.This crisis was not without consequences, for Bush’s administration or for the International Community and even so for the United Nations, since being stuck in Iraq, the United States obtained several resolutions from the Security Council without questioning their unilateralism. Being in an awkward position, the International Organisation was targeted and its headquarters in Iraq destroyed. In the chaos in the aftermath of the war, the neo-conservative administration was obliged, under electoral pressure, to give up its unilateral attitude, and let the Unieted Nations politically resolve the conflict

I uppsatsen som följer har jag använt mig av David Galulas COIN teori. Jag har sedan använt den teorin och analyserat kriget mellan Israel och Libanon 2006. Kriget blev känt som ett misslyckande ur israelisk synpunkt, då de inte lyckades att besegra Hezbollah eller stoppa deras raketskjutningar in i Israel. Detta trots att de har den mest högteknologiska armen i mellanöstern och hade luftoperativkontroll. I denna uppsats så har jag fört ett resonemang för att svara på frågeställningen: Går Galulas teorier att använda mot en organiserad motståndare som Hezbollah? Efter att ha skrivit denna uppsats så har jag inte kommit fram till ett absolut svar, men är personligen övertygad om att det går. I fallet Hezbollah är det väldigt problematiskt i och med att de var så väl förberedda på att det skulle bli krig. Det faktum att Israel dessutom hade skurit ner på sitt försvar och inte hade utbildat sina soldater och chefer inför denna typ av krig gjorde att de inte kunde strida på ett effektivt sätt. För att Israel skulle ha lyckats vinna, tror jag att en större markoperation hade varit nödvändig då Hezbollah var så väl förberedda. Detta är i linje med det första steget i Galulas COIN teori där man med truppnärvaro strävar efter att separera befolkningen från insurgenterna i detta fall Hezbollah.

In the essay that follows I have used David Galulas COIN theory. I have then used Galulas theory and analyzed the war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006. The war from the Israeli point of view was a failure, as they failed to defeat Hezbollah and stop their rockets from firing into Israel. Despite the facts that the Israel had the most technologically advanced army in the Middle East and that they had air superiority in the area. In this essay I have discussed the following question: Are Galulas theories usable against an opponent like Hezbollah? After having written this essay, I have not beenable to conclude a definite answer, however I am convinced that it is possible. The reason for the Israeli failure was the fact that the Hezbollah were so well prepared for war. Whereas the Israeli forces were ill-prepared because of a substantial decrease in numbers compared to earlier years, and because the Israeli soldiers and officers were not trained for this type of war. In my opinion, the Israeli forces would have needed to focus much more on ground operations because the Hezbollah were so well prepared. This is exactly what stage one in Galulas COIN theory advises, where through military presence, separate the civilian population from the insurgents.

Resumo:

Joseph Rykwert held a lecture in Zurich five or six years ago in which he posed the question "is the city an object or a field." This question seems to be answered very easily: when the buildings are high and standing next to one another like in Manhattan, it looks like an object; when you look to many post war extensions that were prepared in response to a lot of propaganda by the modem movement in Europe, it looks more like a field. For my generation, which was educated in the 1970's, this kind of doubleness of object and fields has doubled again. You must know that Joseph Rykwert, when he poses this question, thinks of the Unite &Habitation of Le Corbusier and the way Colin Rowe criticized it as an object, and he is on the side of the Smithsons and other younger people, who tried as architects to link these slab-like forms in networks that looked more like a field.

Resumo:

In this paper, we analyse the long memory process in the cryptocurrencies Bitcoin (BTC), Cardano (ADA), Binance Coin (BNB), Dogecoin (DOGE), Ethereum (ETH) and Ripple (XRP) from January 1st, 2018, to November 10th, 2022, which includes the 2020 and 2022 events. The results demonstrate that the daily returns are leptokurtic, and the distributions are non-Gaussian. We also observe non-linearity, implying autocorrelation or conditional heteroscedasticity in digital currencies. The DFA exponents reveal that throughout the Tranquil period, digital currencies with current values higher than 0.5 exhibited long memory in their returns. The BNB digital currency has an exponent of 0.5, indicating that the series were unpredictable throughout this period. As can be shown, all cryptocurrencies offer values of the DFA exponent greater than 0.5 in the Stress subperiod, implying that the higher the DFA exponent and closer to 1, the higher the persistence, as well as the autocorrelation between observations and stronger predictive ability. The findings support the evidence examined by the BDS test, namely that price movements are not i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) and that investors have a high possibility of achieving above-average returns through arbitrage.

Resumo:

This paper explores a disciplinary feud between theoretical figures of 20th century architectural discourse, and discovers an overlooked and forgotten architectural discourse on the city. The participants of the feud included Nathan Silver and Charles Jencks (authors of Adhocism) on one side of the fight, Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter (authors of “Collage City”) on the other, and Reyner Banham who entered the fray in the middle as a mediator. While the feud was quite stinging—it consisted of an accusation of plagiarism from Nathan Silver—it was completely forgotten. This was because the fight occurred in the letters to the editor section of Architectural Review in 1975, with each jab and blow delayed across three different editions. Yet it is worth looking at since it links these two unexpectedly comparable projects—namely Adhocism and Collage City—with a very unlikely yet similar third project brought into the discussion by Reyner Banham. This third project was Hubert de Cronin Hastings’s theory he described as a Radical Picturesque which he details as an architectural manifesto for designing and reconstructing the post war English city. Radical Picturesque was described in Hastings’s article “Townscape” and published in Architectural Review in 1949. The article’s namesake and surface-level ideas lead to Gordon Cullen’s book The Concise Townscape (which was indeed inspired by Hastings’s original article), but it can be argued that the original text coupled with Banham’s link to Adhocism and “Collage City,” was not fully nor sufficiently realized in Cullen’s book or subsequent iterations of the Townscape movement. These three theories for the design of the city, when looked at together, has the potential to shed new light on 20th century architectural discourse on the city. This paper seeks to illuminate the original ideas that were a part of the Radical Picturesque in order to reinsert an architectural project on the city that was lost to dominant postwar architectural discourse.

Исследования на территории Маркульского храма проводились в 20142017 годах. В ходе работ были вскрыты захоронения на юге и на западе от храма внутри храмовой территории, а также на север, снаружи, вне храмовой ограды. Большая часть захоронений, безынвентарная и имеет переотложенный характер. Но тем не менее, были найдены бусины, перстни, монета плохой сохранности, сосуд из белой плотной импортной глины, которые в той или иной мере позволяют датировать данные захоронения. Основными датирующими материалами являются бусины и сосуд. Но в целом хронологические рамки остаются пока широкими: верхние, разрушенные более поздними перекопами и захоронениями, погребения датируются цебельдинским временем , и скорее всего не поднимаются позднее 6 века. Нижние относятся к периоду средневековья, точнее определить рамки пока не представляется возможным. Общими задачами антропологического исследования стала в основном половозрастная идентификация, определение минимального количества индивидов в коллективных захоронениях и определение наиболее ярких патологических проявлений. Численность захороненных на территории храмового комплекса составила 32 человека со значительным преобладанием доли мужских захоронений и присутствием захоронений детей разных возрастов. С целью определения местного происхождения погребенной группы, был проведен анализ содержания изотопов стронция, а также была сделана попытка реконструкции палеодиеты. Основная масса погребенных оказались представителями местного населения, питавшегося в основном растительной пищей. Investigations of the territory of the Markulas temple in Abkhazia were undertaken in 20142017. Burials were found to the South and the West of the temple, both within the temple lands as well as outside. Most of them contain no grave goods. Among the finds there are beads, rings, a badly preserved coin, a vessel of dense white clay, which allow to date the burials. A series of the upper Tsebeldian period burials damaged by later burials can not be dated later than the 6th century. Lower burials are of the Medieval period, their precise dating impossible. The general task of the anthropological investigation was the classification of the burials by age and sex, the identification of pathological features. There were 32 people buried, most of them males and children of different ages. Isotopes of strontium ware studied to identify the local origin of the buried, an attempt was made to reconstruct the palaeo-diet. Most of the buried were the natives of the area and their diet was vegetarian.

Background: Management of life threatening complications encountered in Advanced Cancer is an important domain of Palliative Oncology. Malignant Bowel Obstruction is usually an indicator of poor prognosis in Advanced cancer. It is usually associated with malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract or those outside the gastrointestinal tract (gynaecological malignancies). MBO can also occur with primary peritoneal as well as secondary peritoneal malignancies. Diagnostic criteria for MBO include Clinical evidence of bowel obstruction, obstruction distal to the Ligament of Treitz, presence of primary intraabdominal or extra abdominal cancer with peritoneal involvement. Materials: Detailed below are two cases of Malignant Bowel obstruction managed with Conservative inpatient nonoperative management with discussion of the proposed pharmacological protocol for the same. Case Details: A 45 year old Postmenopausal female diagnosed as carcinoma ovary stage iiic with left lower limb Deep Venous Thrombosis post multiple lines of chemotherapy including Paclitaxel plus Carboplatin, Etoposide, Tamoxifen and Liposomal Doxorubin, Malignant pleural effusion post thoracentesis was seen in the wards. A 31 year old Female a known case of moderately differentiated carcinoma colon with transmural infiltration and serosal seeding along with omental deposits with hepatic metastasis was seen in the casualty with signs of Multiple episodes of bilious vomiting with colicky abdominal pain and diagnosed to have malignant bowel obstruction on clinic radiological evaluation. Both these patients were provided non operative management of malignant bowel obstruction, were kept nil per oral, nasogastric decompression was performed with ryles tube insertion, antisecretory medication Inj Octreotide 100 ug three times daily, Anti Edema measures Inj Dexamethasone 8 mg intravrenous three times daily, Anti spasmodic and anti secretory medication Inj Hyoscine Butyl bromide 10 mg three times daily, inj Metronidazole 500 mg intravenous three times daily and Pain medication Inj Tramadol hydrochloride 50 mg intravenous in 100 ml of normal saline three times daily. Both these patients developed hyperglycemia which was managed with human regular insulin prescribed as per the sliding scale. Results: Ryles tube aspirate showed a decreasing trend and both the Patients achieved clinical resolution of symptoms underwent deintubation on Day 10 and Day 13 respectively and were taking oral feeds at the time of discharge. They were prescribed pharmacologic management of adhesive bowel obstruction consisting of Tab activated Dimethicone 40 mg three times daily, Tab Lactobacillus one tablet three times daily and Polyethylene glycol one satchet upto three times daily for 15 days at the time of discharge. Results: Resolution of symptoms can be achieved by providing non operative pharmacological management outlined above which consists of adequate hydration, parenteral nutrition when indicated, antibiotics, decongestive anti edema measures, anti spasmodic and anti secretory medication. Conclusion: Management of Hyperglycemia induced by Octreotide and Dexamethasone requires Insulin therapy. Optimum Duration, dosage and route of administration of Octreotide in management of Malignant Bowel Obstruction needs to be evaluated further.

Plant species synthesize a multitude of specialized compounds 10 help ward off pests. and these in turn may well serve as an alternative to synthetic pesticides to reduce environmental damage and health risks to humans. The general goal of this research was to perform a genetic and biochemical dissection of the natural-insecticides methylketone pathway that is specific to the glandular trichomes of the wild species of tomato, Solanumhabrochaites f. glabratum (accession PI126449). Previous study conducted by us have demonstrated that these compounds are synthesized de novo as a derivate pathway of the fatty acid biosynthesis, and that a key enzyme. designated MethylketoneSynthase 1 (MKS 1). catalyzes conversion of the intermediate B-ketoacyl- ACPs to the corresponding Cn-1 methylketones. The approach taken in this proposed project was to use an interspecific F2 population. derived from the cross between the cultivated lV182 and the wild species PIl26449. for three objectives: (i) Analyze the association between allelic status of candidate genes from the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway with the methylketone content in the leaves (ii) Perform bulk segregant analysis of genetic markers along the tomato genome for identifying genomic regions that harbor QTLs for 2TD content (iii) Apply differential gene expression analysis using the isolated glands of bulk segregant for identifying new genes that are involved in the pathway. The genetic mapping in the interspecific F2 population included app. 60 genetic markers, including the candidate genes from the FAS pathway and SSR markers spread evenly across the genome. This initial; screening identified 5 loci associated with MK content including the candidate genes MKS1, ACC and MaCoA:ACP trans. Interesting observation in this genetic analysis was the connection between shape and content of the glands, i.e. the globularity of the four cells, typical to the wild species. was associated with increased MK in the segregating population. In the next step of the research transcriptomic analysis of trichomes from high- and 10w-MK plants was conducted. This analysis identified a new gene, Methy1ketone synthase 2 (MKS2), whose protein product share sequence similarity to the thioesterase super family of hot-dog enzymes. Genetic analysis in the segregating population confirmed its association with MK content, as well as its overexpression in E. coli that led to formation of MK in the media. There are several conclusions drawn from this research project: (i) the genetic control of MK accumulation in the trichomes is composed of biochemical components in the FAS pathway and its vicinity (MKS 1 and MKS2). as well as genetic factors that mediate the morphology of these specialized cells. (ii) the biochemical pathway is now realized different from what was hypothesized before with MKS2 working upstream to I\1KS 1 and serves as the interface between primary (fatty acids) and secondary (MK) metabolism. We are currently testing the possible physical interactions between these two proteins in vitro after the genetic analysis showed clear epistatic interactions. (iii) the regulation of the pathway that lead to specialized metabolism in the wild species is largely mediated by transcription and one of the achievements of this project is that we were able to isolate and verify the specificity of the MKS1 promoter to the trichomes which allows manipulation of the pathways in these cells (currently in progress). The scientific implications of this research project is the advancement in our knowledge of hitherto unknown biochemical pathway in plants and new leads for studying a new family in plants (hot dog thioesterase). The agricultural and biotechnological implication are : (i) generation of new genetic markers that could assist in importing this pathway to cultivated tomato hence enhancing its natural resistance to insecticides, (ii) the discovery of MKS2 adds a new gene for genetic engineering of plants for making new fatty acid derived compounds. This could be assisted with the use of the isolated and verified MKS1 promoter. The results of this research were summarized to a manuscript that was published in Plant Physiology (cover paper). to a chapter in a proceeding book. and one patent was submitted in the US.
