Purpose: Shared book reading is nowadays considered as an important early language stimulation technique in the field of speech language pathology which encourages parent-child bonding and creates a conducive environment for language development. The parent-child interaction is important for a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This interaction along with adequate and contingent parental responses fosters early language development in children. Language-related parent behaviors promote children’s oral language skills by not only exposing the child to book-related vocabulary (e.g., labeling pictures, explaining word meanings, and linking words to everyday events), but also through explicit teaching of meaning-related skills related to the overall structure of the story (i.e., story grammar). Print-related SBR behaviors draw the child’s attention to print-related features of the book, for example, letter names and sounds. Methods: To better understand the relationship between children’s visual attention, verbal engagement and parent shared book reading behaviors during shared book reading tasks, this study included 10 preschoolers on the Autism Spectrum and their parents sharing an unfamiliar storybook including which are scripted and unscripted. Videos of the shared book reading interactions were transcribed and coded for visual attention, verbal engagement and parent behaviors using observational coding schemes. The frequency of visual attention, verbal engagement and parental SBR behaviors were compared between the scripted and unscripted story books using statistical tests-Wilcoxon signed rank test and Fisher’s Exact test. Results: Result reveals that there was no statistically significant difference between frequency of visual attention during unscripted story books and scripted books. Parental behaviors parameters pertaining to shared book reading were analyzed and found a significant difference in usage of book language is greater for scripted story books compared to unscripted books. Conclusions: The key findings shows the type of book (scripted or unscripted) have a significant impact and its contribution to the intervention of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Parental SBR behaviors can in turn contribute to the development of childhood language and preliteracy skills.

Illustrated children's story books are a construction of the world, a perspective that is the result of processing and reading by the creator of the book on other texts he consumes. Picture story books are a medium to offer a view of how the world should be seen and understood. In relation to picture story books, children who are the readers of the stories conveyed in this book will very likely have views of the world around them as views offered by picture story books. Therefore, children and parents should be equipped with the ability to read critically the message conveyed by this picture story book. They must have abilities that allow them not only to be able to critically read narrative texts but also understand how to read pictures, as a mode that appears with verbal texts in storybooks. Multimodal literacy is defined as the knowledge and skills that children must possess, especially, in critically reading verbal texts and especially visual texts. Through this multimodal literacy analysis, it is hoped that we can interpret the messages conveyed by picture story books for elementary school students

A number of questions about Stanislavski's writings on acting and the theatre still hang in the air nearly fifty years after his death. It seems curious that this should be the case when the ideas and books by the great Russian director-actor-teacher are so well known and have exerted such a profound influence on the modern theatre. The persistence of these questions through the years has even raised doubts concerning the authenticity of the writings attributed to Stanislavski and the accuracy of translations from his original Russian texts. As a result, serious students of Stanislavski's “System” feel unable to discriminate among the current interpreters of the man born Konstantin Sergeyevich Alexeyeff.

Wordless picture book is an unique book that could help the young learner to get their literacy. The content of the wordless picture book must be communicated through the visual of the illustration. This research discusses a case study of how a kid of six years old produce his narrative through wordless picture book. The kid allowed to see and say on the page and then write the words that he has mentioned. Practicing to read repeatedly which increase fluency will improve his reading comprehension and written expression. This research was conducted to make better understand about the sense - making process that happen when a child works with the wordless picture book. Most sentences or texts were made based on the references and experience from daily life either explicitly or implicitly. In reading wordless book, readers faced the variety of visual signs. These sign systems help reader form a type of framework that show their interpretation of the text and helps them build construction of the story. The researcher wanted to make the reader understand better about the strategies that the child use to make sense of wordless text. The reason of this study is to help how a six year old nonreader would give interpretation to visual cues in wordless picture books. Transacting with the visual text in the books helped the child to make sense of the stories. The data were analyzed based on the principles of qualitative content analysis that involve a systematic review of the data, coding, category construction and analysis. The result of this research is the wordless picture books give opportunity to the children to create the story on their own and to bring in their own understanding of the world to the text.

“The Three Little Pigs” is one of the most famous folk tales and has been adapted many times. The paper is devoted to the evolution of the classical narration as it was presented in picture-books in the 20 th century. The revisions examined are: Walt Disney’s book based on the animated film (1933), Russian adaptation made by Sergey Mikhalkov (1936, 1957) as well as two picture-books which were published at the end of 20 th century in USA and Great Britain and suggest new versions of the classical story — Jon Scieszka’s and Lane Smith’s “The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs” (1989) and “The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig” by Eugene Trivizas and Helen Oxenbury (1993). All the books demonstrate different variants of interaction between the textual and visual contents. The recent versions of the tale reveal important trends: visual narrative presents a substantive semantics and plays increasingly significant role in modern picture-books. The evaluation of the genre introduces multiple perspectives and challenge reader to interact, to create ambiguous meanings rather than suggest a define statement — thus making reception more complicated and inspiring.

This study compared the responses of two highly reluctant learning-disabled readers before and after they were helped to visualize story situations and events through visual art. These visual art procedures included the reading of illustrated books, the use of visual protocols, and the creation of symbolic story representations, illustrated books, collages, and picture maps regarding their reading. Data gathered from the students were subjected to ethnographic analysis, including preliminary and systematic domain searches, to reveal codes and themes. Data revealed that the use of visual art helped these two readers to begin enjoying reading, and to begin evoking and manipulating story worlds in their minds. The treatments encouraged the students not only to “see” what they were reading, but also to make other response moves involving emotional affect, connecting their own life to the literary experience, and the consideration of significance. Most importantly, perhaps, these students began to participate in the classroom community through their artwork.

The article is devoted to the study of trends in the development of modern children’s books, its impact on the formation of creativity as one of the main competencies. The basis for the development of the visual and plot components of the children’s book in the middle of the 20th century and their influence on the formation of the psycho-emotional component of the young generation of those times are retrospectively covered. Possibilities of modern book publishing for authors-writers are presented. Perspective directions of publishing business development both abroad and in Ukraine are covered. The study revealed qualitative changes in the content, artistic, and architectural content of modern children's books, which are reflected in the latest plots, visual images, design, and creative approaches to putting out books. With the help of certain modern children’s books, we have proved the effectiveness of pedagogical methods of forming preschoolers’ ability to be creative in various life situations, their readiness for non-standard, original solutions, ability to be independent and choose freely, curiosity, development of imagination, courage, flexibility, mobility, etc. These are so-called “quiet books” for children which are popular nowadays. The story is told exclusively by means of illustrative material, which has its own unique author’s visual language and non-standard presentation. It develops children’s imagination and forms their tastes, non-standard thinking, ability to improvise, and encourages preschoolers’ to play. Books with an interactive narrative are of great interest to children. These are toy books, which stimulate children to create games or to become an author of a book with the help of an interesting story and illustrative material. It is offered to consider a modern children’s book not only as an information source but also as a means of stimulating preschoolers’ artistic and play activities. It is emphasized that the modern children’s book is a symbiosis of three artistic practices and might be used as artistic and game material in the educational process of PEI. The influence of books on the preschoolers’ psycho-emotional, personal-behavioral, artistic-activity development, as well as their creativity formation, is clarified practically.

Abstract Evidence abounds of the synergy that exists between literature and visual arts in Africa. Illustrations are known to have given more meaning to books, while the text plays the role of the storyteller, the illustration acts out the story or scene on the pages of the book. Illustrations also make readership very easy and appealing to children and the uneducated people in our local communities. In recent times however, studies have shown a sharp decline in the inclusion of very good, insightful and inspiring illustrations into African literary text. When included, it is often poor and limited to the cover page of the book. This paper examines the merits derivable from the inclusion of visual arts into African literature as well as the reason for its decline with a view to suggesting how it can be used to reinvent African literature. It is expected that by so doing, publishers and authors will see the need and importance of using more illustrations in their books. This will, in turn, generate more interest in the culture of reading among the youths of the 21st century as well as the development of literature directed towards children and the unread.

Postmodern picturebooks have gained increasing importance in the field of theory of children’s literature, because they «Provide the most accessible examples of postmodern eclecticism: the breaking of boundaries, the abandonment of linear chronology, the emphasis on the construction of texts, and the intermingling of parodying genres» (Pantaleo and Sipe 2008). Τhese picturebooks invite a more active reader. Mc Callum (1996) notes that metafictive narratives pose «questions about the relationships between the ways we interpret and represent both fiction and reality». Trites ( 1994) also identifies that the changes in picturebooks reflect «the sort of cultural fragmentation that seems to be the hallmark of the postindustrial age» As today's children live in a world characterized by fragmentation, decanonization and interactivity literacy educators focus on the ways in which literacy education will need to change in order to develop student’s «self-knowledge about reading» (Ryan& Anstey, 2003) and enrich reader’s capacity to decode the rapidly change, rich in symbols, visual culture. (Callow, 2008, Goldstone, 2001, Walsh, 2003, Serafini, 2004 O'Neil, 2011 ) Saramago’s picture books are a good example of work that disrupts expectations of the reader through the self-reflexive narrative structure of the visual text. While the verbal text tells rather a simple fairly story, the visual language in pictures evoke multiple levels of meaning, depending on how the reader (children or adult) chooses to interpret it. One common aspect of the illustrations in both books is the self referential qualities of the illustrations that reveal the process of memories restoration and perception. The illustrators of the books employ a range of metafictive devices that self consciously draws attention to the status of the memories as artifacts and systematically poses questions about the way we recall the past. In this paper we examine fifth graders’ responses to several metafictive devices in Saramago’s picturebooks. The books were read and discussed in depth over a two week time period, where the children participated in small groups and whole-class interactive read-aloud sessions. The fifth graders noticed many of the visual elements and took them into account for the (re)construction of the story, such as intertextuality, indeterminacy in illustrative text, disruptions of traditional time and space relationships, pastiche of illustrative styles, illustrative framing devices including a book embedded within another book, description of the creating process. The data concerning children’s reading of both books lead to the conclusion that ten-years-old children paid great attention to the illustration and did not confine their readings only to words. They have incorporated the visual text in the construction of the story, and proved that they can decipher many of the challenging visual puzzles of both books. The study concludes that using visual literacy in the classroom can help children to develop a “critical eye” and to negotiate our visually rich contemporary culture. Quo Vadis, thanks to its plot structure, favours transformations – even into comic books, where the image of Christianity as an important aspect of the story is challenging to depict. It is therefore worth determining how religious issues are manifested in comic books related to the novel and how the culture in which they were conceived affected them. I reflect on the image of Christianity, recognising religion as a personal experience of each individual (W. James), especially one of love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. These values were given more attention by the Polish writers, and in both adaptations, the sequences and frames were formulated differently, they differed in terms of composition (different perspectives, plans, and use of text), and finally, both offered different interpretations of Sienkiewicz’s novel. The authors of the French adaptation read the book as a vibrant, adventure-history-love story, while the Polish authors saw it as a story dedicated to a moment in history in which one world ends and another one begins, as a new religion emerges. These interpretations confirm that culture plays an important role in how literary works are adapted into the comic book format.

This research focuses on revealing visual means of creating imagery in picture books, addressed to a child-reader. The theory of J. Appleyard has been acknowledged. It is believed that in early and later childhood children realize themselves as players, heroes, and heroines of the stories. Given that, visual imagery contributes to their reading experience and creates special world, which attracts child-readers. The theory suggested by G. Kress and T, van Leeuwen, supplemented by C. Painter, J. Martin, and L. Unsworth has been developed and amplified. Social distance, proximity, attitude, and contact in picture books for children are created by means of visual devices, i.e. color and saturation, page layout, close up and long-shot depiction. It is assumed that the most prominent means of creating meanings in picture books for children becomes the focaliser’s viewpoint, as in most narratives for children a child or an anthropomorphic character of a child’s age is a focaliser of the events. It is claimed that close-up depiction of images creates a special eye contact with the reader, as well as color decisions become visual means of creating the point of view of the focaliser. Furthermore, full-length pictures become a visual tool of implementation ironic senses. In ironic narrative for children, the incongruity is shaped via visual depiction of the characters, which builds the contrast between conventional understanding of issues and their representation in narratives for children. Proximity and distance of the images implements social and psychological connection, status or misunderstanding between the characters. Special angle of viewing the images serves as a device of revealing the type of the narrator of the story, as oblique and high angle become a tool of narrating a story by an adult narrator.

Abstract The main aim of this article is to study the communicative functions of visual metonymies in a sample of picture books written and illustrated by Anthony Browne, an internationally acclaimed author and illustrator of children’s books. The three tales selected for analysis are Voices in the Park, Gorilla and Piggybook, all of which have been highly praised by critics and become universally accepted as classics. Within the frameworks of visual social semiotics and cognitive linguistics, the strategies available to the illustrator to represent characters in picture books have been identified and analysed in the contexts where they were produced. The results of the analysis show that visual metonymies are used in Browne’s picture books essentially to highlight or minimize a character’s status over another fictional actor, to ascribe negative qualities or attitudes to the main characters and, in turn, to foreshadow what is yet to come in the story.

The exhibition One American Family: A Tale of North and South was the culmination of a multi-year project that began with a graduate student’s examination of three quilt tops that once belonged to a family that had donated over 500 objects to the University of Rhode Island’s Historic Textile and Costume Collection. This family, which had deep roots in New England, became intertwined through marriage with a family from Charleston, South Carolina. The student, Rachel May, a doctoral candidate in English, became so enamoured of the quilt tops, two related swatch books and the story behind the artefacts that she continued her research for several years, finally publishing a book in 2018 titled An American Quilt: Unfolding a Story of Family and Slavery. The book is based on documentary research, but imagines the lives of the quiltmaker, her family and the enslaved people she came to own during the antebellum period. To commemorate the publication of the book, the university sponsored an exhibition and several educational events. A graduate-level class ‘Exhibition and storage of historic textiles’ tackled the problem of how to separate the documentary evidence from the book’s fictionalized narrative, and to visualize that evidence using the artefacts in the Historic Textile and Costume Collection.

Kata kunci: bahasa rupa, DKV, komunikasi grafis, NPM, RWD Abstract: Currently, the development of communication media is dominated by digital graphic communication which is supported by the usage of smartphones and internet, which are commonly accessed by millennial generation. On the other hand, conventional graphic communication is still surviving for the children segment, which is applied to illustration story books. The visualization technique tends to adapt modern western style which known as ‘NPM’. Until now the authors have never found illustration story books yet, which is designed using Indonesia’s traditional visual language which known as ‘RWD’. This is a chance for authors to understand about RWD visual language better. This research uses qualitative method to analyze the possibility of applying RWD visual language in illustration story books. The result of this research is the concept of exploration of RWD visual language as graphic communication which applied in the final assignment of DKV’s college students. This research is expected to be a reference for designers and academicians especially college students in explorating traditional Indonesian visual language into the process of designing artworks in order to create many alternatives in visualization of both conventional and digital graphic communication. The Sumbawa folklore book is currently a story book whose existence is not well identified. This can be proven by the fact that there are not many Sumbawa folklore books that can be used in learning at school or stored in the national library. In this regard, this study aims to design a digital storybook model, determine readability and determine the feasibility of digital Sumbawa folk stories that were tested on fifth grade students at Gusus 2 Elementary School, Sumbawa Besar. The method used in this study is Research and Development using the ADDIE model. The results of each stage of the research are detailed as follows; 1) at the analysis stage from the observations it was found that the use of folklore books was limited to limited printed textbooks and had not yet used storybooks in digital form, 2) at the design stage an update of the storybook model was produced from the printed version to the digital version as well as improving the display quality such as improvements visual, 3) at the development stage changes the shape of the cover image, adding color to the character of the character which was previously black and white, adjusting the vocabulary and story content which is then assessed by media experts and material experts with a feasibility level of 92.5% and 82.5% , 4) in the implementation stage which involved respondents from teachers and students produced a feasibility level of 91% and 98%, 5) the final stage, namely the evaluation stage by reviewing all the results obtained so that it can be concluded that the use of Sumbawa folk digital story books is very feasible for used as a learning medium in 5th grade elementary school Group 2 Sumbawa Besar.

In 1933, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two Jewish teenagers from Ohio, fashioned an ideal personality called Superman and a narrative of his marvelous deeds. Little did they suspect that several years after conceptualizing the figure and their many vain attempts to sell the story to various comic book publishers, their creation would give rise to the iconic genre of comic book superheroes. There is no doubt that the Superman character and the accompanying narrative led to Siegel and Shuster, the writer and artist, respectively, becoming famous. However, was it only the appealing character and compelling narrative that accounted for the story’s enormous popularity, which turned its creators into such a celebrated pair, or did the visual design play a major part in that phenomenal success? Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in the comic book medium in several disciplines, including history, philosophy, and literature. However, little has been written about its visual aspect, and comic book art has not yet been accorded much recognition among art historians. Since the integration of storyline and art is what allow the comic book medium to be unique and interesting, I contend that there should be a focus on the art as well as on the narrative of works in comic books. In the present study, I explore the significance of the visual image in the prototype of the Superman figure that Siegel and Schuster sold to DC Comics and its first appearance in the series American Comic Books. I argue that although the popularity of Superman’s first appearance was due to the conceptual ideals that the character embodied, the visual design of the ideal man was also an essential factor in its success. Accordingly, through a discussion of the first published Superman storyline, I emphasize the artistic-visual value of the figure of this protagonist in particular and the comic book medium in general.

Children are honest learners who express their feelings and imagination. Related to imagination, basically all children are creative where according to George & Zhou (in Ashkanasy & Rowe, 2008) creativity is a product of ideas or solutions that are new and useful. Building creativity and imagination in early childhood is a crucial component in their cognitive, emotional and social development. Picture storybooks are one of the most effective educational tools in stimulating these two aspects. This study aims to examine how the use of picture storybooks can develop creativity and imagination in early childhood, as well as the best method of presenting them. Through literature review and participatory observation, this research highlights the important role of illustrations in picture storybooks. Attractive and colourful images not only capture children's attention, but also help them understand and internalize the story better. These images provide a visual jolt that can enrich children's imagination, encouraging them to imagine worlds and characters that are not limited to their real-life experiences. This process helps children develop creative thinking skills, where they learn to think outside the real boundaries and find innovative solutions to various situations. This research also emphasizes the importance of choosing the right picture storybooks. The books selected should be appropriate for the child's age, interests and developmental level. Books with stories that promote positive values, such as cooperation, honesty and courage, can have a positive impact on children's ethical and social development. A picturebook is a multimodal work of art that a child encounters already in early childhood. The paper analyzes the problem picturebooks by the authors Tatjana Gjurković, Tea Knežević, and Jelena Brezovec, which thematize children’s challenges of dealing with emotions such as disappointment, guilt, shame, and humiliation. The aim is to determine which characteristics of this type of picturebook’s verbal and visual discourses help children overcome problems arising from the mentioned emotions. Narrative parts of picturebooks were analyzed concerning the narrative perspectives and the narrators’ roles in the verbal and visual discourses according to the narrative level and extent of participation in the story. The results of the analysis show that, in the verbal and visual discourses of the analyzed picturebooks, the stories are mediated by extradiegetic-heterodiegetic narrators, with zero focalization of narration applied. The naive illustration style prevails in the visual discourse of picturebooks, along with elements of comic style and the use of complementary colors on certain double spreads.

The application of interactive electronic picture books can strengthen young children’s reading comprehension skills. Interactive electronic picture books that involve interaction with sensors, with the interaction integrated into the story, should be developed to enhance children’s reading experience and improve their oral expression skills. Interactive electronic picture books that involved children manipulating stuffed animals containing sensors that provided feedback were developed for this study. Visual, auditory, and tactile stimuli can be used to create an interactive feedback system. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers, who gave their opinions regarding the curriculum of their preschool. The results indicate that the intuitiveness of the system helped improve the children’s reading experience, strengthened their motivation to read, and improved their cognitive abilities. In addition, interactive electronic picture books were found to improve the children’s oral expression skills.

The story of the development of Jelly’s Last Jam (1992) stands uniquely at the intersection of racial politics, intellectual property, the power of storytelling and the authority of those who tell stories and present them on the stage. By the time the show opened on Broadway, Alan Lomax had been trying for nearly three decades to get his book Mister Jelly Roll (1950) adapted for the stage or screen. Now the story of Ferdinand ‘Jelly Roll’ Morton had become a musical, with a book by George C. Wolfe and music and lyrics by Luther Henderson and Susan Birkenhead, and Wolfe’s script ensured that Morton’s story linked up firmly with the history of jazz and race in America. But Lomax’s name and book title were nowhere to be found in the show’s credits, nor in interviews and other commentary about the show. Although musicologist Lawrence Gushee referred to Mister Jelly Roll as ‘the point of departure for all subsequent biographical writing on Morton’, George C. Wolfe stated only that ‘the stories of black people’ are ‘not stored in the history books […] they’re stored in the music’. In this study, I offer new evidence that explains the curious misdirection in Wolfe’s public utterances based on a close study of archival sources in the Library of Congress’s Alan Lomax Collection, of the complete and unedited recordings of Lomax’s interview with Morton released for the first time in 2005 and of press coverage of the producers’ efforts to bring Morton’s story to the musical stage. This article synthesizes the public and private legacy of the show’s development to provide perspectives on a larger racial reckoning that resonates offstage as well as onstage.

This community service activity aims to train teachers to make learning media in the form of pictorial stories with children's literary content. This article is a case study of community service at the Nakula Gugus Teacher Working Group in Wonogiri, Central Java. Children's literature in this context is defined as a medium that is used as an intermediary to convey a form of character education for children. Apart from this, children's literature is considered an appropriate medium because it is able to attract students' interest through visual and narrative forms. Children's literature is also able to have more appeal if from the beginning it comes from ideas that are owned by the children themselves. This will stimulate a sense of ownership and logic to the things that the story structure wants to instill. The method used is lectures and discussions, then in the form of workshops on picture story books. The result of this community service is a picture book with a theme that is close to children related to the use of gadgets, which are then given the title Playing with Friends.

The 19th century is called the “golden age” of a children’s book. At this time, a variety of children’s literature appeared, first of all in Britain. The model of a decorated book are the books of Kelmscott Press. However, it was precisely at this time that a series of children’s books with a modest design at affordable prices, such as the so-called “one-penny” series “Books for the Bairns”, emerged. Ideologist and permanent editor of Books for the Bairns William T. Stead was a well-known journalist, founder and editor-in-chief of periodicals, public figure, child rights defender and a fighter against child prostitution. In 1912 he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, but scandalous reports, imprisonment, and his interest in spiritualism made W. Stead’s im- age controversial. The concept of the series, created by Sted, is based on a combination of an adapted simplified literary translation and a detailed step-by-step visual story that accompanies the text. The chief illustrator and visual co-author of W. Sted was the Irish artist B. Le Fanu (Brinsley Le Fanu, 1854–1929). For B. Le Fanu, the illustration of the series was the biggest art project. At his time, B. Le Fanu was known for the illustrations to the works of his father — Sheridan Le Fanu, one of the founders of the Irish mystical novel. They have the characteristic features of the Victorian era. Making illustrations for children’s books, B. Le Fanu does not lose their fantastic nature, but combines them with a realistic drawing. Each cover of the series represents one of the main characters of the book. A simple but vivid picture, one or two characters on the cover, a landscape or interior outlined by several elements — that’s what the covers by B. Le Fanu were like. None of them are decorated with patterns or ornamental details. The artist consistently implemented the concept of simplicity and clarity suggested by W. Sted, but not primitiveness. The best volumes in the series are his illustrations of L. Carroll’s “Alice’s in Wonderland” and M. Servantes’s novel “The Adventures of Don Quixote”. The “Books for the Bairns” series, although not exquisitely designed and illustrated, has become a model for children’s literature publishers for half a century and inspired the appearance of similar series of cheap children’s books in Western Europe and also Russia and Ukraine.

Moral learning can be taught through stories, which act as orientations and role models to stimulate understanding which then becomes the habituation and personal character of the child. In this study project moral learning is presented in stories in the form of comic books, with Cindelaras's story as example. The comic book creation process goes through several stages of the creative process namely the pre-production process, the production process and the post-production process. The main work produced was a dummy form from a comic book titled "Cindelaras: A Boy with Rooster" and several merchandise works as supporters such as bookmarks, key chains, art prints and stickers. All the sequences pages of this comic are visual illustrations that tell the story of Cindelaras' journey in fighting for justice. In this comic also illustrated how Cindelaras behaves to parents, people who need even those who are evil to him. This comic has the main message that every good or bad deed will return to the culprit. This work is analyzed from the technical aspects, aesthetic aspects and illustrative aspects. Technically, the entire work is done in digital format and techniques with Adobe Photoshop CS5 applications, while viewed from an aesthetic aspect, it highlights visual elements that are depicted such as colors, lines, drawing styles, and so on. The illustrative aspect explains how illustrations play an important role in communicating stories in this comic book. Through this comic book illustration creation it is hoped that it can add to children's reading recommendations as a medium of moral learning as well as a means of promotion to introduce native Indonesian folklore.

Abstract Verbal metaphor and also metonymy have been theorized from a conceptual perspective since Lakoff and Johnson published Metaphors we live by in the 1980s. However, the final years of the twentieth century saw a new approach into non-verbal monomodal or multimodal tropes (Forceville & Urios-Aparisi, 2009). In an attempt to expand upon the theorization and communicative functions of visual metonymies, this study aims to explore the meaning potential of metonymic representations of characters in a sample of six picture books which portray same-sex-parent families. A multimodal cognitive approach has been adopted to find out whether, and if so how, metonymic representations of characters contribute to the positive portrayal and acceptance of same-sex-parent families in children’s picture books. The results reveal that monomodal visual metonymies are essentially used to introduce new characters in the story and highlight important aspects of the plot which boost the acceptance of non-traditional families.

Abstract The study presents the reader with an intermedial interpretation of the storybook Mimi & Liza written by Katarína Kerekesová – Katarína Moláková – Alexandra Salmela (2013). The storybook follows the story of the friendship of two little girls, Mimi, who sees the world proliferating in mad colours, and the blind Liza, who is immersed in inner seeing. The two girls are presented as each other’s opposites through the semiotics of two counterpointing colour schemes. The analysis is based on Mitchell’s conception of media (Mitchell, 1994), that is, it sets out by acknowledging the intermedial state of the culture of children’s books, and then it follows the unfolding of the visual elements up through the investigation of expressive visual effects created by the text’s rhetoric. The visualization happening with the help of language is the condition of the common worldview of the blind and seeing characters as well as the guiding principle and goal of the volume; therefore besides the visual representation characteristic of children’s books, an emphasized role is given to the validation of the ekphrastic perspective in the analyzed work. The ekphrases of the text are presented as intermedial references (Rajewsky, 2010) based on Irina O. Rajewsky’s interpretation of intermediality. A unique feature of the interpretation is that the ekphrases of the volume read as sort of imaginary/imagination ekphrases which create the special, children’s book version of ekphrasis. It is characteristic for this imagination ekphrases that the order of the imaginary image and its linguistic description create an undecidable symbiosis. These images, however, can also be interpreted as inverted ekphrases, since they function not merely as descriptions of imagination ekphrases, but also as the visual world representations of linguistic imagination. Through several examples the study introduces and analyzes the mechanisms of the visualization happening with the help of language as well as the scenery painted with words.

Branislav Jakovljević's study on performance and self-management in Yugoslavia and Armin Medosch's research on New Tendencies and post-Fordism share a number of analytical frameworks that the review argues partake in a broader shift towards political economy as a key framework for art historical inquiry. This shift elicits what could once again be called a world-historical perspective: both of these books anchor their narratives in post-war Yugoslavia but only in order to show that the telling of the story of Yugoslav art requires the telling of the story of the world, a story that is not simply an instance of global or transnational (art) history. Instead, these accounts affirm a certain political teleology; they (re)turn to Yugoslavia to recall something that is lost, a ruptural, future-bound history that never saw its future, and whose interrupted course they historicize, offering a recourse to historical understanding as a step towards a new strategy of resistance.

Most often, Ovidian allusions are woven into Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene (Books I–III, 1590) without developing into an open re-telling of myths. One significant exception occurs in Book III, Canto 1: there the action comes to a temporary stop in order to make space for a detailed description of the tapestry in the hall of Castle Joyous, which depicts the story of Venus and Adonis. This article intends to offer a reading of that episode that focuses on the importance of materiality and self-reflexivity as keys to its significance at the opening of Book III, and in the larger structure of The Faerie Queene. Here, the descriptive powers of the poet are both foregrounded and questioned, in a double movement of ekphrasis which gestures towards a serious interrogation of the value of representation, both in poetry and the visual arts. Implicitly, it is the poet (and through him, the reader him/herself) that must question his/her role and participation in the gradual and often painful awareness of the body that is foregrounded throughout Book III.

In the four billion years since life on earth emerged, an impressive biodiversity has been established. Indeed, there are around 8.7 million different forms of life on planet earth today. During this time, millions of lifeforms have also become extinct. The story of the history of life is fascinating and scientists and other people are keen to create new and innovative ways to explain the history and importance of biodiversity that has unfolded over the past four billion years. Professor Masashi Kimura, College of Art, Nihon University, Japan, is combining science and design to create a timeline of biodiversity that represents the earliest stages of life through to life on earth today. Although there exist visual books that deal with the history of the earth and biological evolutionary lineages, there is no visual representation of biodiversity and continental migration that can be studied simultaneously on a digital timeline, and this is what Kimura is creating. To do this, he and his team read visual books and websites published by natural history museums in Europe and the US in order to collect relevant scientific information. They also had discussions with scientists and designers, including Dr George McGavin, Professor Emeritus of Oxford University and current BBC nature programme presenter, on how problems with visualisation could be overcome.

AbstractThe article draws on recent research into emergent literacy and metacognition, and charts a developmental trajectory from early concept books to picturebooks aimed at children and young teenagers. Methodologically, the study is a research synthesis, where the aim is to systematize current research findings and offer an overview of different types of picturebooks, and how they build literary and metacognitive competence. My thesis is that picturebooks are crucial in that process. The analysis focuses on the metacognitive affordances that can be found in picturebooks directed at different age groups/competence levels. Both the verbal and visual dimensions of the text are analyzed with the help of picturebook and comic book theory (iconotext, sequentiality). The results show that early concept books are surprisingly abstract; they stimulate the child’s aesthetic-affective response by using clear colours and easily discernible shapes. In the next stage, things (nouns) from the child’s close environment are represented. Naming and identifying are crucial activities at this stage. Verb-oriented concept books follow; these typically focus on simple actions from the child’s lifeworld, such as getting dressed, or eating. Next, we find narrative picturebooks, in which the fundamentals of story, plot, and characterization are introduced. Finally, the potential for advanced storytelling is explored with regard to symbolism, irony, and character development. I nästa steg återfinns berättande bilderböcker.

The Arabian Nights is among the best known and least known of the world’s great classics. We’ve all heard of it, and may even remember a tale or two from our childhood story books (“Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”, or “Aladdin”). But the unabridged, unexpurgated 1001 Nights is a massive work: a dozen volumes, thousands of pages. Not a quick or an easy read. Also, the stories it contains were meant to be performed by a professional storyteller; like most performance literature, they can seem pretty lifeless when pinned to the page.

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to suggest a framework of reader-response aspects suitable for English language learners in an EFL setting which is necessary when teaching English using story picture books. Methods: The paper starts with the discussion of Rosenblatt (1985, 1994)'s reader-response theory. The frameworks of reader-response aspects suggested by various researchers (Hancock, 1993; Sipe, 2000, 2008) are then investigated and analyzed. In addition, what page break means and in what ways readers can respond to page break is examined. Through the analysis and synthesis of a relevant theoretical background, a new framework of reader-response aspects is drawn and suggested for teachers to use in English instruction to enable English language learners to express their responses more systematically and comprehensively. Results: The framework of reader-response aspects based on response perspectives has significance in that it facilitates English language learners to respond comprehensively in a range of perspectives, including settings, characters, events, theme, text language, illustration or visual elements, page break, making connections, author perspective, and creative response. Conclusion: This paper examined the significance of understanding and applying the frameworks of reader-response aspects in English language learning and instruction using story picture books.

The study tests the efficacy of a new sort of digital picture book. It includes camera movements to guide children’s visual attention through the pictures and the possibility to control page-turning and the pace at which the camera moves through pictures. There were 56 participants (Mage = 60.34 months, SD = 6.24) randomly assigned to three conditions: still images, camera movements (no control over pace), and camera movements (control over pace). For the 50% of children least proficient in language skills, sparingly adding well-chosen camera movements to the illustrations helps children understand the story. In addition, the camera movements’ effect can be enhanced by enabling control over the pace at which new information appears. Particularly the 50% low-language proficiency children benefited from camera movements and spending more time processing information.
