Abstract: Cloud computing has experienced significant growth in the recent years owing to the various advantages it provides such as 24/7 availability, quick provisioning of resources, easy scalability to name a few. Virtualization is the backbone of cloud computing. Virtual Machines (VMs) are created and executed by a software called Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) or the hypervisor. It separates compute environments from the actual physical infrastructure. A disk image file representing a single virtual machine is created on the hypervisor’s file system. In this paper, we analysed the runtime performance of multiple different disk image file formats. The analysis comprises of four different parameters of performance namely- bandwidth, latency, input-output operations performed per second (IOPS) and power consumption. The impact of the hypervisor’s block and file sizes is also analysed for the different file formats. The paper aims to act as a reference for the reader in choosing the most appropriate disk file image format for their use case based on the performance comparisons made between different disk image file formats on two different hypervisors – KVM and VirtualBox. Keywords: Virtualization, Virtual disk formats, Cloud computing, fio, KVM, virt-manager, powerstat, VirtualBox.

The most peculiar characteristic of a cultural heritage is represented by its uniqueness. To ensure that an object is preserved against environmental deterioration, vandal attacks, and accidents, modern Cultural Heritage documentation involves 3D scanning technologies. In the case of fragmented artefacts, the digitization process represents an essential prerequisite for facilitating an accurate 3D reconstruction. The aim of this research paper is to present a framework that enables an accurate digital reconstruction of fragmented or damaged artefacts using ornament stencils obtained from 3D scan data. The proposed framework has been applied for the richly adorned ornaments of the fragmented Dacian embossed disk from Piatra Roșie. The case study makes use of the 3D dataset acquired, using a structured light scanner to extract vector displacement maps, which are then applied to the 3D computer-aided design (CAD) model. The output of the framework includes a proposed digital reconstruction of the aurochs fragmented Dacian embossed disk, as well as the ornaments’ stencils database. The proposed framework addresses problems that are associated with 3D reconstruction processes, such as self-intersections, non-manifold geometry, 3D model topology, and file format interoperability. Finally, the resulting 3D reconstruction has been integrated within virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications, as well as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) based on additive manufacturing to facilitate the dissemination of the results.

Cloud computing allows for access to ubiquitous data storage and powerful computing resources through the use of web services. There are major concerns, however, with data security, reliability, and availability in the cloud. In this paper, we address these concerns by introducing a novel security mechanism for secure and fault-tolerant cloud information storage. The information storage model follows the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) concept by considering cloud service providers as independent virtual disk drives. As such, the model utilizes multiple cloud service providers as a cloud cluster for information storage, and a service directory for management of the cloud clusters including service query, key management, and cluster restoration. Our approach not only supports maintaining the confidentiality of the stored data, but also ensures that the failure or compromise of an individual cloud provider in a cloud cluster will not result in a compromise of the overall data set. To ensure a correct design, we present a formal model of the security mechanism using hierarchical colored Petri nets (HCPN), and verify some key properties of the model using model checking techniques.

The article is devoted to the study of political discourse within the virtual space – an "artificial" world created in recent decades with the help of information technologies, where individuals are able to communicate with each other over vast distances, modeling their own personality at will. The research, in particular, is aimed at studyinh how political communication changes in the virtual reality, what linguistic and extralinguistic means are used by political actors when communicating with their electorate and between each other. Using the categories proposed by T. van Dijk, the article proposes the use of new characteristic features for Internet discourse, such as speaker's anonymity, semi-formal tone of communication, more open and competitive expression of opinions, emotionality, etc. for the analysis of communication within the virtual space. The article proposes a clarification of the definition of political discourse, highlights its most important features, defines differences in communicative strategies depending on the gender of the speaker or political actor. With the help of the proposed categories and based on the works of such prominent scholars as R. Wodak, L. de Saussure and T. van Dijk, the article provides a new definition of the concept of political Internet discourse, which is aimed at a more complete consideration of the interaction between individuals within the virtual space. It is suggested to use the categories proposed by T. van Dijk for the analysis of communication within the virtual space, which will allow to single out communicative situations that are directly related to the political sphere. By comparing communicative situations in the "artificial" world with the physical one, it is argued that a characteristic feature of political Internet discourse is the transfer of extralinguistic components through textual communication. It is clarified that in many communicativesituations between political actors and other users, the latter act as the information recipients, limited only to the ability to interact with other recipients. In conclusion, it is suggested to understand political Internet discourse as actions of a linguistic and extralinguistic nature, related to the political sphere and implemented in the virtual space by political actors and ordinary users; actions, which are characterized by the possibility of anonymous subjectivity, semi-formality, a more open and competitive nature of expressing opinions, etc., and in which the transfer of extralinguistic components is achieved mainly through text communication. Based on the categorical clarifications made in the article, strategies for further Internet discourse analysis are developed.

The workflow in modern hospitals entails that the medical treatment of a patient is distributed between several physicians and nurses. This leads to intensive cooperation, which takes place under particular time pressure and requires efficient conveyance of relevant patient-related medical data to colleagues. This requirement is difficult to achieve with traditional data representation approaches. In this paper, we introduce a novel concept of anatomically integrated in-place visualization designed to engage with cooperative tasks on a neurosurgical ward by using a virtual patient’s body as spatial representation of visually encoded abstract medical data. Based on the findings of our field studies, we provide a set of formal requirements and procedures for this kind of visual encoding. Moreover, we implemented a prototype on a mobile device that supports the diagnosis of spinal disc herniation and has been evaluated by 10 neurosurgeons. The physicians have assessed the proposed concept as beneficial, especially emphasizing the advantages of the anatomical integration such as intuitiveness and a better data availability due to providing all information at a glance. Particularly, four of nine respondents have stressed solely benefits of the concept, other four have mentioned benefits with some limitations and only one person has seen no benefits.

Abstract Background: Dysregulated Notch signalling contributes to breast cancer development and progression, but validated tools to measure the level of Notch signalling in breast cancer subtypes and in response to systemic therapy are largely lacking. A transcriptomic signature of Notch signalling would thus be warranted, and in this report, we have established such a classifier. Methods: To generate the signature, we first identified Notch-regulated genes from six basal-like breast cancer cell lines subjected to elevated and reduced Notch signalling by culturing on immobilized Notch ligand Jagged1 or blockade of Notch by g-secretase inhibitors, respectively. From this cadre of Notch-regulated genes, we developed candidate transcriptomic signatures that were trained on a breast cancer patient dataset (the TCGA-BRCA cohort) and a broader breast cancer cell line cohort and sought to validate in independent data sets. Results: An optimal 20-gene transcriptomic signature was selected. We validated the signature on two independent patient datasets (METABRIC and Oslo2) and it showed an improved coherence score and tumour specificity compared with previously published signatures. Furthermore, the signature score was particularly high for basal-like breast cancer, indicating an enhanced level of Notch signalling in this subtype. The signature score was increased after neoadjuvant treatment in the PROMIX and BEAUTY patient cohorts, and a lower signature score generally correlated with better clinical outcome. Conclusions: The 20-gene transcriptional signature has the potential to better stratify patients and to evaluate the response of future Notch-based therapies for breast cancer. Abstract Here we report pre-clinical characterization of the clinical compound BI 1810631, a HER2 specific, EGFR wild-type-sparing tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). BI 1810631 has shown early signs of clinical activity in patients carrying tumors with HER2 aberrations [NCT04886804], mainly comprising HER2 mutations (Heymach et al. 2023). In non-small cell lung cancer, activating mutations in HER2 are found in 2-4% of patients and predominantly cluster in exon 20 within the tyrosine kinase domain (TKD), of which the most frequent variant is A775_G776insYVMA. Studies across tumor cell lines and xenograft mouse models show that BI 1810631 is a potent and selective inhibitor of HER2-driven oncogenic signaling. Compound-mediated reduction of cell growth and survival was observed in mutant HER2 driven Ba/F3 cell systems, in human tumor cell lines in vitro and translated into tumor regressions in a genome-engineered HER2-YVMA mutant xenograft model. The in vivo efficacy of BI 1810631 was further confirmed in HER2 exon 20 mutant patient-derived tumor models. Corresponding biomarker studies in vitro and in vivo showed modulation of pharmacodynamic markers, corroborating the on-target mechanism of action of the compound. These findings demonstrate that HER2 mutations can be effectively addressed by BI 1810631 and support the ongoing and future clinical trials.

This study presents a research with descriptive exploratory approach, which analysis was qualitative, from a study that approached the pedagogic mediation in virtual learning environments. The analysis and thoughts came from the various authors works that approach the theme, focusing in to discuss the relevant aspects of pedagogic mediation, associate to technologies on the didactics processes mediation in learning virtual environments. We used as searching instruments an online questionnaire, applied to 17 teachers of public schools which work with preschool and elementary school of different regions of Brazil and outside. Those teachers were located in two lists from different extension activities and continuous formation that happened before than this dissertation. The study object questioning was about: Which online pedagogic mediation strategies contribute more for the teaching and learning virtual processes? The guiding questions stablished to the investigation were the following: Which are the online pedagogic practices that benefit more the online pedagogic mediation on the searching subjects? Which are the indicators to the qualification of practice of online pedagogic mediation from what was found on the research? As results of this search we can point that the strategies of online pedagogic mediations that more contribute to the virtual teaching and learning processes are the mediation which incentive the sharing of knowledge, the mediations that include interactivity, the mediations that include collaborative activities, the ones that offered feedbacks in short period of time, the ones that include conditions for execution of required activities, also the ones that give the belong feeling, what means, those that are possible for the group share/develop critical/constructive thoughts about their own knowledge, (re)balancing, that is to say, different views to the same problem, offering new constructions and (re)constructions. Those results represent a current scenario of new contexts of learning that deserve to be evaluated and described in support of continuous improvement of the practices and teachers formation in the distance mode.

This paper deals with theoretic and methodological aspects important to define the excellence of continuing education lato sensu to public school managers leading with distance learning in basic education in Rio Grande do Norte in 2009-2011. It is part of the national policy of enlargement of higher education, i.e. the School Managers Program, which interacts in a context of social and economic changes re-shaping the Brazilian state. The objectives of the course met the exigencies of new knowledge by school managers in view of offering a better education, thanks to a partnership involving the Ministry of Education (MEC), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Rio Grande do Norte Education Office and the National Union of Municipal Education Managers. The dialect and historical materialism is the leading guide to this project whose approach consists in overcoming internal and external barriers defying the researcher. As a result, the investigation comes to be a historical act, although a discontinuous one. The investigation subjects are the managers/pupils that answered the questionnaire applied by UFRN course direction and posted their activities in the virtual environment. The literature and the investigator?s experience permitted to generate an evaluation matrix disclosing the map of aspects of the empirical field constituted of the pedagogical virtual environment (environment class) hosted in the Moodle platform exhibiting didactical tools: forums and database with activities posted by managers/pupils. The analysis of the 144 applied questionnaires reveals the evaluation of the distance learning, the role of the professionals, the class contents and the general view of the course; 64 activities, corresponding to 10% of the 633 posted in the database, were object of an accuracy analysis. The research results suggest contradictions, limits and challenges in the road to the expansion of higher education of EaD kind. Therefore, historical changes in the educational policies are demanded, in view that the changes undergone by the global and informational society did not break the traditional patterns of professional formation of educators, particularly the school managers. Although the course often awakes new knowledge concerning the school management, it presents knowledge gaps that only the faceto- face instruction could resolve. In fact, out of step with the demands of a changing society, the educators did not incorporate sufficiently so far the tools and knowledge of the new technologies to face the challenges of the school routine. Coherently they describe as uncomfortable their study conditions, and uneasy the access to computer and internet.

The essay "A local view of a national project: the course in Media Education" presents a research aimed at analyzing how the course Media in Education is being implemented by both Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and State University of Rio Grande do Norte, with the intention of pointing out weaknesses in its use, which should be resolved in order to contribute to the design of other courses along these lines. Therefore, we performed a survey in which data collection, have used open questionnaires available in online pages created specifically for this purpose and administered to alumni and former participants, course participants and tutors from the two universities involved in the research. Through these questionnaires, we identified, especially, those aspects that negatively affect the provision of course related to the student's profile, the virtual learning environment where the course is hosted, the meetings, the contents and activities, the mentoring and the dropout, and the changes to improve the implementation of the course. The research collaborators are professors of public basic education. To understand the continuing education of teachers, conducted through distance education, using the virtual learning environment, we contextualize this from the nineties, in the context of the Brazilian educational reform took place in that decade. The Media in Education course is presented as a different proposition because it allows teachers to follow different pathways, materialized in the learning cycle. At the end of the study, we conclude that the implementation of this course, of the RN, the conditions for dialogue to happen, specifically, are not given

This master research was developed in Sensu Stricto Master's Program Graduate Education (PPGEDU), at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). The work is connected to Research Line Training, Policy and Practice in Education. The research aimed to answer the por question: What is the connection between teacher education and their choices por to use them in a virtual classroom? The dissertation intended to investigate issues involving the connection between teacher education and pedagogical practices in virtual classrooms in order to support the selection of tools in a virtual class placed in a Virtual Environment for Teaching and Learning. The theoretical framework was based on the following themes: Distance Education, Virtual Environments for Teaching and Learning, Teacher Education and Teachers Knowledge related to Digital Technologies. The research was based on a qualitative approach Bogdan and Biklen (1999), with a case study (YIN, 2010; L?DKE; ANDR?, 1986). The data collection instruments used were: a semi-structured questionnaire, an interview with the administrator of Distance Education unit and university policies documents. In order to analyze and interpret data, it was used the qualitative technique named Textual Analysis of Discourse Moraes (2003). The results show us that teacher background related to specific technologies influences the choice of tools to be used in the virtual classroom. The different tools associated to a virtual class are restricted by teacher s formation regarding to technology. Thus when researchers are observing teaching actions in virtual classrooms they can formulate a wrong idea about teachers' pedagogical concepts. Indeed teachers choose pedagogical tools and resources which are more comfortable to use and not necessarily those ones they would like to use according to their pedagogical beliefs. In other words their pedagogical projects include the use of tools and resources which are limited to their own technological background. Therefore it is necessary that educational institutions think about the importance of continuous investments in teachers' education for the use of Digital Technologies along all teachers' profissional life.

This papers objective is to evaluate the usability and the information architecture of the Moodle Mandacaru interface, now being utilized in the Center for Studies in Public Health in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Specifically in the Specialization Course in Labor Management and Health Education (CGTES), and to propose improvements for future versions. The study was based on the concepts of usability evaluations using predictive techniques, using ergonomic criteria for inspection via checklist LabUtil, and prospective, using the cooperative evaluation and satisfaction questionnaire. The research methodology is descriptive and its mixed approach, in which are utilized quantitative analysis, collected in satisfaction questionnaires and interpretative analysis, collected in interviews on site with 5 students of the course. To help in the organization and direction of the research it was used a framework called DECIDE, where a specific sequence of orientation, execution and analysis in the evaluation process was drawn .Data collection was organized in three stages: (1) the preparatory phase, the organization of actions that will guide the subsequent steps; (2) the first stage, with the realization of a diachronic analysis of the object under study and ergonomic inspection; (3) the second stage, with the implementation of cooperative evaluation coupled with the satisfaction questionnaire. Data analysis in the first stage, through environmental diachronic analysis showed a significant improvement in visual appearance, content organization and use of new technologies in previous versions, however the inspection via checklist presented a percentage of approximately 33% non-compliance with the ergonomic criteria in Ergolist, presenting flexibility, user control, feedback and minimal actions as one of the interface problems. The results of the second step showed a consistent with most points of the previous stage, adding a personal touch user satisfaction with regard to usability and aspects relevant to the environment.

MP3 players are often described as music collections in our pockets or the pocket jukebox. Indeed, it would seem that MP3 players have significantly transformed music collections, music collecting practices, and contemporary understandings of the music collection. The MP3 player may be used to store, retrieve, and reproduce digital music files, and, therefore, it can be described as a portal—if we define the term portal as an entrance, doorway, or gateway—into these simulated (Baudrillard, 1983) mobile music collections. It is an interface between the human body and archives of digitally compressed music. This can perhaps be understood as constituting a kind of musical cyborg, a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of human and machine (Haraway, 1991). The MP3 player, in this hybridised sense, is a gateway into the digital, virtual, or simulated (Baudrillard, 1983) material cultural realm of music, a mobilised cyber-collection. The question then is what becomes of the music collection and the music collector when music shifts from the objectified disc and spool to the digital compression format and MP3 player portal? And, what are the social and cultural implications of the MP3 player portal’s increasing pervasiveness and embeddedness in the flows of everyday life? The purpose of this article is to briefly introduce and discuss these questions alongside some of the technical details of the MP3 player. This article aims to use the material and technical details and definitions of the MP3 player to open up a range of possible questions that may be pursued in future research in this area. I will begin by defining the MP3 and the MP3 player.

Abstract Horace Greeley, remembering the 1840s, recalled that Lake Superior was not “calculated to attract a ... gourmand.” Food was frequently scarce, sometimes rotten, and often monotonous and boring. Pioneers could not eat a year-round diet of nourishing, varied, and appetizing food. But two or three decades of occupation brought a great deal of change to the Keweenaw diet. In the mid- 184os, a hungry man with a shotgun might walk into the forest, ready to target as food virtually anything that moved; by 1870, he could stroll into a church social and sit down to a dish of strawberries and ice cream. Local forests, meadows, lakes, and streams continued to offer up food. Gardens and farms cultivated by settlers yielded a modest amount of fruits and vegetables, and some meat and dairy production was undertaken. More and larger supply ships plying the waters of Superior delivered not only a wider array of fresh and preserved foodstuffs to Keweenaw stores but also the cookstoves, kitchenware, and tableware used to prepare and eat meals. Importantly, as more women settled on the Keweenaw, they assumed the lion’s share of the essential task of feeding the population.

"greater the probability that the particles will miss the high shear zones on a single pass through the device. For this reason the discharge of many rotor/stator devices is re-stricted with a series of holes or bars, or with a grid, which performs two separate tasks. First, a discharge grid absolutely limits the maximum particle size that can exit the mixer. If the holes on the discharge grid are 2 mm, it is virtually impossible for par-ticles larger than that diameter to pass through the machine. Rotor/stator in-line mix-ers are made with restricting grids as small as 0.5 mm, and a wide range of larger sizes up to 50 mm or even unrestricted outlets. A sample of such grids is presented in Fig. 29. But even the smallest usable discharge grid does not necessarily provide abso-lute control of the required size distributions in the range of fine dispersion. This is the second reason for the restriction on the discharge. By putting a more limiting dis-charge on the outlet, the flow rate through the device for a given set of pumping cir-cumstances (viscosity, density, system suction, and discharge head) is reduced and the residence time in the machine for a given particle or droplet is increased. The longer residence time increases the probability that a particle has to travel through the highest shearing zones and, thereby, be reduced to the smallest size that the machine is capable of producing. • • • • " ' ; • " * * «L £ J- •-". In this paper various graphic formats were reviewed as resources for web virtual globe. Interactive spherical visualization (ISV) platform called “Orbus” was considered as an example of a graphic resources repository for web virtual globe. Various raster and vector static and dynamic cartographic layers can be set as resources of applications of this type. Such data should fulfill requirements for high informativeness with a minimum disk volume. In this paper traditional formats used for geodata storing, as well as becoming popular formats that can be adapted to work with geodata were explored. As a result of the analysis of the characteristics of common raster formats, the optimized raster format WebP (in the lossless specification), as well as the associated WebM media container, were selected as the most efficient. As a result of analysis of the characteristics of common vector formats, conclusions about their limitations in visual design of the virtual globe were made.

Resumo:
Considered repositories of objects(Cuno 2009), museums have been analysed through the object-oriented policies they mainly focus on. Three main purposes are often mentioned: preservation, dissemination of knowledge and access to tradition. Beyond these informative and cultural-laden functions, museums have also been labeled as theatres of power, the emphasis lying on nation-oriented policies. According to Michael F. Brown (2009: 148), the outcome of this moral standing of the nation-state is a mobilizing public sentiment in favour of the state power. We consider that the constant flow of national and international exhibitions or events that could be hosted in museums has a twofold consequence: on the one hand, a cultural dynamics due to the permanent contact with unknown objects, and on the other hand, some visibility strategies in order to attract visitors. This latter effect actually embodies a shift within the perception of museums from entities of knowledge towards leisure environments. Within this context where the concept of edutainment(Eschach 2007) seems to prevail in the non-formal way of acquiring new knowledge, contemporary virtual museums display visual information without regard to geographic location (Dahmen, Sarraf, 2009). They play ?a central role in making culture accessible to the mass audience(Carrazzino, Bergamasco 2010) by using new technologies and novel interaction paradigms. Our study will aim at analyzing the way in which civilization was e-framed in the virtual project ?A History of the World in 100 Objects, run by BBC Radio 4 and the British Museum in 2010. The British Museum won the 2011 Art Fund Prize for this innovative platform whose main content was created by the contributors (the museums and the members of the public). The chairman of the panel of judges, Michael Portillo, noted that the judges were impressed that the project used digital media in ground-breaking and novel ways to interact with audiences. The two theoretical frameworks used in our analysis are framing theories and critical discourse analysis. ?Schemata of interpretation? (Goffman 1974), frames are used by individuals to make sense of information or an occurrence, providing principles for the organization of social reality? (Hertog & McLeod 2001). Considered cultural structures with central ideas and more peripheral concepts and a set of relations that vary in strength and kind among them? (Hertog, McLeod 2001, p.141), frames rely on the selection of some aspects of a perceived reality which are made more salient in a communicating text or e-text. We will interpret this virtual museum as a hypertext which ?makes possible the assembly, retrieval, display and manipulation? (Kok 2004) of objects belonging to different cultures. The structural analysis of the virtual museum as a hypertext will focus on three orders of abstraction (Kok 2004): item, lexia, and cluster. Dividing civilization into 20 periods of time, from making us human (2,000,000 - 9000 BC) up to the world of our making (1914 - 2010 AD), the creators of the digital museum used 100 objects to make sense of the cultural realities which dominated our civilization. The History of the World in 100 Objects used images of these objects which can be considered ?as ideological and as power-laden as word (Jewitt 2008). Closely related to identities, ideologies embed those elements which provide a group legitimation, identification and cohesion. In our analysis of the 100 virtual objects framing e-civilization we will use the six categories which supply the structure of ideologies in the critical discourse analysis framework (van Dijk 2000: 69): membership, activities, goals, values/norms, position (group-relations), resources. The research questions will focus on the content of this digital museum: (1) the types of objects belonging to the 20 periods of e-civilization; (2) the salience of countries of origin for the 100 objects; (3) the salience of social practices framed in the non-formal teaching of e-civilization/culture; and on the visitors? response: (1) the types of attitudes expressed in the forum comments; (2) the types of messages visitors decoded from the analysis of the objects; (3) the (creative) value of such e-resources. <div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Recently, the increasing complexity of systems and diverse customer demands have necessitated the development of highly efficient vehicles. The ability to accurately predict vehicle performance through simulation allows for the determination of design specifications before the construction of test vehicles, leading to reduced development schedules and costs. Therefore, detailed brake thermal performance predictions are required both for the front and rear brakes. Moreover, scenarios requiring validation, such as alpine conditions that apply braking severity to xEV with the regenerative braking system, have become increasingly diverse. To address this challenge, this study proposes a co-simulation method that incorporates a machine-learned brake pad friction coefficient prediction model to enhance the accuracy of brake thermal capacity predictions within the vehicle simulation environment. This innovative method allows for the simultaneous prediction of both front and rear-wheel brakes. The required brake torques for the front and rear wheels are calculated based on the vehicle model and driving scenarios. The brake system model generates the necessary pressure during deceleration, whereas the friction coefficient is crucial in creating brake torque, resulting in brake power for both the front and rear brakes. Within the simulation model, the virtual wheel brake calculates the speed, pressure, and disc temperature based on vehicle driving schedules. The machine-learned model utilizes these variables as inputs and returns the friction coefficient. The prediction accuracy of torque and disc temperature improved significantly as the virtual wheel brake utilized the friction coefficient received from the model trained using the mixed-effects random forest algorithm.</div></div>
