This paper discusses the functional system of a learning media product development; the design and implementation of a virtual lab with analog oscillator comprised of the following: i) Wien Bridge oscillator, ii) Colpitts oscillator, iii) Hartley oscillator and, iv) Astable Multivibrator. The virtual laboratory was built using Adobe Flash CS6 Action Script 3.0. This media can be accessed offline on a computer standalone based on the extension .exe or .swf and constructed with 24 frames per second (fps). This media can be operated by changing the Resistor (R), Inductor (L) and Capacitor (C) components via ‘plug and play’ to the tool-kit, or trainer kit, while the output can be seen in the measuring devices, namely: the frequnecy counter and oscilloscope. The second product is a digital jobsheet as a supplementary element for the practical, which contains prequisites for conducting practical use, introductory, and anatomic information of the virtual lab, as well as the directions for using the e-jobsheet and virtual lab, the practical procedures, and the test items for evaluation.

We examined the effectiveness of using 3D, visual, digital representations of human heads and faces (i.e., virtual busts) for person identification. In a series of 11 studies, participants learned a number of human faces from analog photographs. We then crafted virtual busts from those analog photographs, and compared recognition of photographs of the virtual busts to the original analog photographs. We demonstrated that the accuracy of person identification using photographs of virtual busts is high in an absolute sense, but not as high as using the original analog photographs. We present a paradigm for comparing the similarity, both structural (objectively similar in shape) and subjective (subjectively in the eyes of a viewer) of virtual busts to analog photographs, with the goal of beginning the discussion of a uniform standard for assessing the fidelity of digital models of human faces.

Abstract Objective A virtual reality-based prospective memory task was designed to examine whether a virtual environment would allow for a deeper level of processing and aid prospective memory performance. The purpose of this study was to compare young adults’ performance on analog and virtual reality-based prospective memory tasks. Method Young adult college students (N = 40; ages 18–26) completed both analog and virtual reality prospective memory tasks in the Virtual Kitchen Protocol. Results A within-subjects analysis of variance found that participants performed better on the analog prospective memory task than in virtual reality, F(1,39) = 12.46, p = .001. Conclusions Results suggest that the virtual environment served as a source of distraction rather than a memory aid for young adults’ prospective memory ability. However, this added level of distraction may mimic everyday prospective memory settings better than traditional analog tasks, suggesting that virtual prospective memory tasks may be able to better assess everyday prospective memory abilities.

Abstract The compound optimization monitor (COMO) approach was originally developed as a diagnostic approach to aid in evaluating development stages of analog series and progress made during lead optimization. COMO uses virtual analog populations for the assessment of chemical saturation of analog series and has been further developed to bridge between optimization diagnostics and compound design. Herein, we discuss key methodological features of COMO in its scientific context and present a deep learning extension of COMO for generative molecular design, leading to the introduction of DeepCOMO. Applications on exemplary analog series are reported to illustrate the entire DeepCOMO repertoire, ranging from chemical saturation and structure–activity relationship progression diagnostics to the evaluation of different analog design strategies and prioritization of virtual candidates for optimization efforts, taking into account the development stage of individual analog series.

The library science terminology related to the new information technologies has become unstable with the emergence of the term “digital” as an alternative to the term “electronic”. The author expresses high opinion of the analysis of these terms, accomplished by Ksenia Yu. Volkova and Victor V. Zverevich in their article “Digital or electronic” (Nauch. and tech. b-ki. - 2020. - № 12. -P. 159-172), and as a follow-up, digs into the semantic difference of the terms content. In the professional literature, the discussion of modern terminology began with the term "virtual" in the 1990s. It was at the same time that the short life for the term was predicted, and experience speaks to the truth of the prediction. Electronic and digital document types exist in the technodocument cluster and - further - only of its technotronic subtype. The technotronic document is a document which creation and reproduction require modern technical instruments and technologies. Electronic document is the most modern type of technotronic document for the moment. The digital - electronic contraposing, which is widely used in the modern world library literature, is incorrect. In fact, the digital opposes the analog. Electronic is a general term applied both to digital and analog, as well as to virtual. The terms electronic and non-electronic make the dichotomous pair of concepts. The author foresees long relevance of the concept of electronic library science.

Abstract Objective Neuropsychologists are using virtual reality to simulate everyday activities in order to increase ecological validity in neuropsychological assessments (Kane & Parsons, 2017). However, relatively little is known about the extent to which comfort with computers and analog tasks influences older adults’ performance on virtual reality-based tasks. Methods Healthy older adults (N = 42) rated how comfortable they are with computers and cooking meals in daily life and completed the Virtual Kitchen Protocol, a measure of procedural learning and memory for meal preparation tasks. Results Both higher comfort with cooking meals in a real kitchen and higher comfort with computers were associated with better learning, immediate recall, and delayed recall of the procedural task in virtual reality. However, comfort with computers did not explain a significant amount of variance in performance beyond comfort cooking in a real kitchen. Conclusion While both comfort with computers and analog versions of tasks may relate to older adults’ learning and memory in virtual reality, performance may be primarily related to analog abilities.

In this paper we aim to find a definition of virtual which fits the latest developments of digital technology, but also applies to the analog world. We consider the virtual as related to immanence, taking inspiration from Deleuze’s reading of Bergson and Merleau-Ponty’s last work. We first analyze Deleuze’s idea of immanence, from which virtuality emerges, then we focus on Merleau-Ponty’s concept of flesh and its virtual center. We argue that both philosophers see immanence as a dynamic medium of virtuality, overcoming the traditional concept of substance and theorizing a deep intertwining of bodies and technology. Our analysis shows that the virtual is defined by the following features: it implies an epistemological and ontological monism, relationality, and entanglement with reality. The virtual clearly emerges in digital technologies, but also belongs to analog reality, as a general condition for our knowing and being in the world as such.

The authors present a virtual authoring environment for artistic creation in VR. It enables the effortless conversion of 2D images into volumetric 3D objects. Artistic elements in the input material are extracted with a convenient VR-based segmentation tool. Relief sculpting is then performed by interactively mixing different height maps. These are automatically generated from the input image structure and appearance. A prototype of the tool is showcased in an analog-virtual artistic workflow in collaboration with a traditional painter. It combines the expressiveness of analog painting and sculpting with the creative freedom of spatial arrangement in VR.

Resumo:
Mass sensors based on the eigenmode shift of coupled cantilevers achieve much higher sensitivity than those based on the single cantilever’s eigenfrequency shift. In the former sensors, two identical cantilevers and a weak coupling stiffness between them are required to achieve high sensitivity. However, conventional coupled cantilevers cannot satisfy these requirements because of machining accuracy. To satisfy both requirements, a virtual coupling between a real macrocantilever and a virtual cantilever, whose dynamics was calculated using a digital computer, was proposed in our previous research. The sensitive mass sensing of mg-order masses was achieved. In the present work, for minute mass sensing, we replace the real macrocantilever with a real microcantilever. The calculation speed of a digital computer is not fast enough to calculate the virtual cantilever’s dynamics because the natural frequency of the microcantilver is much higher than that of the macrocantilever. Therefore, we use an analog circuit instead of a digital computer to achieve virtual coupling with the virtual cantilever. The proposed system enables us to tune the virtual cantilever’s parameters to satisfy both requirements for high sensitivity by changing the analog circuit parameters. We verified experimentally that the proposed system achieved high sensitivity for mass sensing of the order of nanograms.

ABSTRACTTreatment and rehabilitation of the cognitive, psychological, and motor sequelae of central nervous system dysfunction often relies on assessment instruments to inform diagnosis and to track changes in clinical status. Typically, these assessments employ paper-and-pencil psychometrics, hands-on analog/computer tests, and rating of behavior within the context of real-world functional environments. Virtual reality offers the option to produce and distribute identical “standard” simulation environments in which performance can be measured and rehabilitated. Within such digital scenarios, normative data can be accumulated for performance comparisons needed for assessment/diagnosis and for treatment/rehabilitation purposes. In this manner, reusable archetypic virtual environments constructed for one purpose can also be applied for applications addressing other clinical targets. This article will provide a review of such a retooling approach using a virtual classroom simulation that was originally developed as a controlled stimulus environment in which attention processes could be systematically assessed in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This system is now being applied to other clinical targets including the development of tests that address other cognitive functions, eye movement under distraction conditions, social anxiety disorder, and the creation of an earthquake safety training application for children with developmental and learning disabilities.

Resumo:
An analog of Koopmans’ theorem is formulated for the energies, εa, of virtual Kohn–Sham (KS) molecular orbitals (MOs) from the requirement that the KS theory provides, in principle, not only the exact electron density, but also its exact response. The starting point is the Kohn–Sham analog of Koopmans’ theorem, relating the vertical ionization energies, Ii, to the energies, εi, of the occupied MOs ( Chong, D.P.; Gritsenko, O.V.; Baerends, E.J. J. Chem. Phys. 2002, 116, 1760 ). Combining this with the coupled-perturbed equations of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), exact relations between the energies, εa, of virtual KS MOs and the excitation energies, ωia, and vertical ionization energies (VIPs), Ii, are obtained. In the small matrix approximation for the coupling matrix K of TDDFT, two limiting cases of these relations are considered. In the limit of a negligible matrix element, Kia,ia, the energy, εa, can be interpreted as (minus) the energy of ionization from the ?i → ?a excited state, εa ≈ –Ia, where –Ia is defined from the relation Ii = ωia + Ia. This relation breaks down in special cases, such as charge-transfer transitions and the HOMO–LUMO (highest occupied molecular orbital – lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) transition of a dissociating electron-pair bond (also of charge-transfer character). The present results highlight the important difference between virtual orbital energies in the Kohn–Sham model (εa ≈ –Ia) and in the Hartree–Fock model (εa ≈ –Aa). Kohn–Sham differences εa – εi approximate the excitation energy, ωia, while Hartree–Fock differences [Formula: see text] do not approximate excitation energies but approximate the difference of an ionization energy and an electron affinity, Ii – Aa.

The proposed poster presentation will explore using the Gen environment in MaxMSP to develop software that implements virtual analog and wavetable synthesis. Gen is a powerful tool that enables one to approach sound synthesis on an elemental level by implementing signal processing on the sample level instead of dealing with audio frames. The talk will explore both graphical patching and using the embedded text-based language GenExpr using the codebox operator. Focus will be placed on developing design patterns for developing efficient sound synthesis routines and learning to experiment in realtime with Gen.

Noisefest! is an interactive, multisensory experience centered around a small Maine town and rooted in the sounds and noise of its streets. Comprising a Virtual Reality tour, soundwalks and remixes, a 2D laser cut geographical map with Arduino controllers, and a Futuristic noise intoner, one of the objectives of this collaborative, transdisciplinary, and theory-based project is to create concrete opportunities for students to participate in the “real” world and engage with the materiality of noise and its manifestations by interacting with the soundscape through novel, interactive, and multisensory practices. Noisefest! is also an example of how one can creatively and artistically extend the reach of the digital humanities beyond the borders of academia and into the public realm.

This article presents some findings of ongoing investigation on preferences and activities of university students in an emergency remote education context. A qualitative research was developed through the application of two controlled instruments (questionnaires), and a more productive one (recordings of testimonies). The main contribution of this work is the identification of three student profiles based on the strategies they develop to study with technologies in their personal environments. They are known as Gutenberg, Amphibian, and Maker profiles, and some of the main characteristics of their techno-pedagogical practices are described here. The Gutenberg profile defines a group of students whose study practices and preferences are fundamentally linked to analog technologies; the Amphibian profile is defined by the combination of analogical and digital strategies, however, there is an emphasis on the emulation of analog practices. Finally, Maker profiles prefer digital technologies and they are able to recreate teaching resources into new digital objects. The results indicate that students appropriate technologies in a particular and flexible way, which puts in tension the categories native digital and millennial, since preferences and activities seem to show the presence of analogical practices along with other emerging ones.

Outcrop analogs play a central role in understanding subseismic interwell depositional facies heterogeneity of carbonate reservoirs. Outcrop geologists rarely utilize near-surface seismic data due to the limited vertical resolution and difficulty visualizing seismic signals as “band-limited rocks.” This study proposes a methodology using a combination of forward modeling and conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) to translate seismic-derived acoustic impedance (AI) into a pseudo-high-resolution virtual outcrop. We tested the methodology on the Hanifa reservoir analog outcropping in Wadi Birk, Saudi Arabia. We interpret a 4 km long outcrop photomosaic from a digital outcrop model (DOM) for its depositional facies, populate the DOM with AI properties, and forward calculate the band-limited AI of the DOM facies using colored inversion. We pair the synthetic band-limited AI with DOM facies and train them using a cGAN. Similarly, we pair the DOM facies with outcrop photos and train them using a cGAN. We chain the two trained networks and apply them to the approximately 600 m long seismic-derived AI data acquired just behind the outcrop. The result translates AI images into a virtual outcrop “behind-the-outcrop” model. This virtual outcrop model is a visual medium that operates at a resolution and format more familiar to outcrop geologists. This model resolves subseismic stratigraphic features such as the intricate downlap-onlap stratal termination at scales of tens of centimeters and the outline of buildup facies, which are otherwise unresolvable in the band-limited AI.

Architecture students use both analog and digital tools throughout their design process. Ideally, the affordances of each tool complement each other. Our goal with Kitoparts is to move beyond two-dimensional screen based computer modeling environments to create a system that feels analog but harnesses all the affordances of digital modeling environments. With the usage of VR and haptic controllers, we hope to provide a rich and flexible methodology for investigating forms and space. In educational settings, Kitoparts aims to solve three major problems with traditional beginning design exercises. First, it solves the scaling problem, allowing design students to see their designs visualized at full scale and in real-time. Second, it overcomes the combinatorial nature of physical building blocks by allowing 3D shapes to overlap and embed into each other in ways they could not within the physical world. Finally, we include the designer’s “hands” in the creative process. Virtual hands prove to be much more intuitive to use than the traditional mouse and keyboards commonly utilized in most CAD and modeling software. With Kitoparts, the computer model is no longer just a tool for representation; it becomes the user interface for design. Kitoparts allows both seasoned designers and novices to simply play, build, and explore.

The article presents the hardware and software configuration of the developed multi-channel temperature measurement system as well as calibration procedures and measurement results verifying the properties of measurement channels. The system has been developed and dedicated primarily for measuring the temperature distribution in a laboratory model simulating underground power lines. With the adopted configuration of the analog part of each measurement channel, the main functions in the system developed as a virtual instrument are performed in its software. The instrument input circuits contain NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistors used as temperature sensors. The resistance of each of the thermistors connected in the voltage divider circuits is converted into a voltage. The obtained voltages in the measurement channels, after analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), are processed in subsequent operations in the instrument’s software. In addition to the basic function of the device, which is the multi-channel temperature measurement, the operations of identifying the characteristics of the thermistors used and calibrating each of the individual measurement channels are performed. The article contains sample results of the calibration of measurement channels and temperature verification measurements used to evaluate the properties of the developed system. The obtained inaccuracy of the temperature measurement in each of the channels is less than 0.4 °C.
