Augstein, Franziska A. "James C. Prichard's views of mankind : an anthropologist between the Enlightenment and the Victorian age". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 1996. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1317637/.

Resumo:
The Bristol doctor James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) is acknowledged as Britain's foremost student of anthropology and ethnology in the early nineteenth century. At a time when European scholars increasingly embraced racial theories to account for cultural diversities, Prichard was a stout defender of monogenism. Being was brought up as a Quaker, he later converted to Anglicanism, embracing the Evangelical wing of the church. He regarded the unity of mankind as a necessary precondition in the struggle to uphold Christian morality under threat of materialism and Utilitarianism. Oddly, his theories have often been misrepresented, in particular their opposition to contemporary racial theorizing has been underestimated. My dissertation, the first study dedicated exclusively to Prichard, explores his notions of man's place in nature and puts them in the context of contemporary European learning. This comprises an investigation into his theories of insanity as well as his ethnological writings laid down in his Researches into the Physical History of Mankind and other works. In order to support monogenism Prichard became a self-taught expert in philology and mythology, adding the latest results of continental scholarship to the knowledge acquired at Edinburgh University. He studied German comparative philology years before the method spread in Britain, availing himself of methods deemed by many as theologically dangerous. Yet, synthesizing German Romantic theories with Edinburgh learning, Prichard's anthropology remained within the framework of Christian piety, culminating in the assertion that mankind was a unity due to its common "psychology" which Prichard inferred from his observation that all human tribes believed in a life after death. The concept of the atonement, so important for early nineteenth-century Evangelicals, came to stand at the core of Prichard's anthropology. But his conflation of science and theology appeared increasingly unacceptable. By delineating the debates Prichard was engaged in, the thesis adds to the understanding of the development from eighteenth-century thought to secularized mid-nineteenth-century theories of man.

Millar, Ashley Eva. "Assessing the wealth of a nation : British and French views of China's political economy during the Enlightenment". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2010. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2385/.

Resumo:
Early modern Europeans, particularly during the Enlightenment, looked outwards to foreign lands to satisfy their curiosity, enhance theories or support nationalist or religious agendas, as well learn from other advanced civilizations. This dissertation examines British and French views of China's political economy during the Enlightenment until the publication of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. It studies the construction of knowledge on China's political economy by British and French primary travellers, geographers and philosophers, which results in several conclusions. First, while certainly evident in eighteenth century encounters with China, the sinophilia/sinophobia dichotomy is a flawed way to assess early Enlightenment perceptions of China's political economy. Rather there was a striking degree of consensus among sources that have been conventionally divided. Second, Europeans did not possess comfortable assumptions of superiority in the area of political economy and expressed a great degree of civilizational relativism. Finally, Enlightenment commentators and observers displayed a genuine interest in what could be learned from China. At times, Europeans used China as a mirror for self-evaluation and exploration, such as when considering views of economic culture. In other instances an active engagement with the Chinese model existed, as philosophers analysed how aspects of the Chinese system could be reconciled with - and even be used to improve - their own burgeoning theories of political and economic organization. China's military weakness and scientific stagnation offered insight on pitfalls to avoid. Europeans often viewed China's history, geography and population as unique and thus argued that Chinese practices could not be replicated in a European setting. On topics such as foreign trade and the form of government, China was dismissed as a useful model, not on normative grounds, but rather because its uniqueness and singularity meant it could not comfortably be worked into the universal models that characterized European Enlightenment thought.

Modig, Andrew. "The Rational State : A feminist look, supported by Althusser’s Marxist theory, at how Mr. Scogan views and interacts with the women in Aldous Huxley’s Crome Yellow". Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för humaniora, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-12167.

Resumo:
This paper analyses Mr. Scogan and his treatment of women with the use of Althusser’s Marxist theory which (supposedly and in this case successfully) reveals the ideology which infuses every State and every larger social group. Feminist theory is then used to analyse his philosophy which influences both his utopia, “the Rational State”, as well as his treatment of women – the conclusion drawn after analysing several events or discussions in Crome Yellow, such as on the Home Farm, the Rational State and the Charity Fair was that Mr. Scogan is perhaps not representative of all men and certainly not of men (and men’s notions) at the timeof Crome Yellow’s publication, but he is representative of a stereotypical man who oppress women based on their femininity. The worst case scenario drawn was that Mr. Scogan could be a rapist of young virgins.

Resumo:
This thesis examines the relationships between different nations and cultures in Ivanhoe, The Talisman, Quentin Durward, Anne of Geierstein and Count Robert of Paris using Post-colonial theory. An analysis of Scott’s conception of society in general shows that 18th century Scottish historiography is fundamental to his vision of the world because it forms the basis of his systematization of history, social development and interaction between communities. It also profoundly influences his imagery and descriptions, as well as providing him with a range of stereotypes that he manipulates so skilfully that his great dependence upon them is occulted. Contemporary ideas and his own attitude to the Union of Scotland and England lead him to conceive of nation formation in terms of descent and hybridity. In part, he sees the nation as a community of blood. Yet, his acceptance of the Union means that he also considers it to be a body of different ethnic elements that live together. His use of the 18th century metaphor of family to figure the nation allows him to incorporate heredity and miscegenation into his analysis of national development through father-daughter couples. The father represents traditional culture, and the daughter, the nation’s present and future; her marriage to a foreigner signifying that people of differing descent can cross the nation’s porous borders. Religion is the final frontier: Christian nations cannot absorb non-Christians. Scott sees dominance and subordination as a complex part of human relationships. Apparently-subordinate subjects possess occulted power because their support of the hegemonic is often essential if the latter is to maintain its superiority. While his conception of society in patriarchal terms means that his female characters cannot offer violence to men, he shows that passive resistance is very effective. Through mimicry, the subordinate threatens the power and identity of the dominant. Power is not only conceived of in political terms. In Ivanhoe, Scott reveals the importance of moral stature which allows Rebecca to dominate the work although she is at the bottom of the political and racial hierarchy that structures English society. Scott’s conception of time is fundamental to the manner in which he conceives of the nation. Historical cultural forms are physicalised through chronotopes. Politically subordinate cultures base their actions in the present on pedagogic time, while the dominant ignore their past and live only in the present and the future. He also expresses dominant-subordinate relationships through speed, with time moving quickly for the powerful and slowly for the weak. Time, whether in the form of history, the characters’ perception of it or speed amalgamates all the various elements of Scott’s conception of nationhood into a seamless whole.

The contemporary environmental ethics about the ecological crisis to be concerned has been made by the contemporary Chinese and Western scholars. They present the relevant content inside, and then return to "Zhouyi" to look at the wisdom of our traditions. The traditional wisdom of Confucianism, for the contemporary western scholars have launched a problem of ecological and environmental ethics, can give some help on this issue. By the Chinese and Western comparison of ideas for this issue, the author hopes that through this topic we can not only activate the wisdom of "Zhouyi", but also help alleviate the ecological crisis.

Abstract Shu Shi was a living example and life model of the unity of knowledge and action of Chinese literati. This research aims to draw a comparison between the life story of Su Shi and his perspective on life, and the life education curriculum in Taiwan, followed by an analysis on Su Shi’s enlightenment on life education theories and practice. The research will be conducted based on literature review, while exploring the life story of Su Shi using the historical method as well as analyzing and comparing his life story and Taiwan’s life education curriculum using the content analysis method. The study hopes to take Su Shi’s perspective on life as a reference and enlightenment for life education, its theories and practice, complementing and enriching the life education theories and contents in the Chinese community. The conclusions of the research are drawn as follows. 1. The curriculum of the 12-year national life education aligns with the essence of the 99 high school curriculum, as well as broadens and enriches the content. 2. This paper primarily focuses on the life story of Su Shi and ups and downs in his career. 3. The connotation of Su Shi’s perspective on life is mainly categorized into three topics: “survival”, “living” and “life”. 4. There are many similarities between Su Shi’s perspective on life and the curriculum of 99 high school life education as well as the 12-year basic national life education. 5. Su Shi’s perspective on life has provided enlightenment and connotation for life education in the Chinese community. Based on the above conclusions, the research will propose suggestions to future studies on the application of Su Shi’s perspective on life in the contents of life education curriculums, life education theories and its implementation. Keywords: Su Shi, life story, perspective on life, life education

This dissertation was conceived with the objective of considering the social, literary and philosophical forces of the eighteenth century through the eyes of Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart. The Enlightenment, and particularly in this dissertation the German Aufklärung, was an intellectual movement which attempted to amend many of society’s seeming imbalances, such as class structure and church authority. Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart experienced and acknowledged the same Aufklärung, but embraced and implemented their understanding in different and conflicting ways. Among the issues which the Mozarts considered in relation to the Aufklärung were: their respective attitudes towards and implementation of education; their mutual fascination with the life and work of Christoph Martin Wieland; their contrastive tolerance towards religious and racial minorities; their patriotism and consequent desire for German institutions; and their opposing attitude to their social standing in regards to the church and state. In looking at these issues, three main conclusions will be realised: Leopold’s preoccupation with education and his yearning to be considered amongst the Men of Letters of the Aufklärung; Leopold and Wolfgang’s incompatible attitude to social structure and the behaviour that was required of their respective standing; and, finally, the difficulties faced by the father–son relationship in the rapidly evolving eighteenth century.

On the one hand, bureaucracy, too much emphasis on the instrumental rationality, suppressed emotion perception, but also to moral blindness, moral indifference has become a common phenomenon in society. On the other hand, the limitations of scientific rationality created artificial order management, weakening the original moral intelligence of the people to take a more holistic judgment. In this development context, byproducts of modern life are abandoned, but the placement of waste has become increasingly difficult to place a load, "waste culture" was born, and to bring the human society and the environment are difficult to resolve crisis. We must explore in depth the core issues of sustainable development and education, about the role of moral people, no program of normative ethics and the natural disposition of responsibility. In the compromise-oriented individual outlook on life, and how we reflect on the task of self-realization, connotation inherent constraints of fear and inertia behavior. The view of life in society correction and activation orientation, we ponder how social and political justice movement. This paper finishing and Taiwan in recent years, the international community in promoting the values and practice of sustainable education, civil society organizations what kind of efforts were made. Based on the above discussion, we propose the following two conclusions. First, the compromise amendment orientation and education for sustainable development is the optimum orientation of thinking. Second, sustainable education must pay attention to the body in the capacity-building speculative ethics. Third, the value of sustainable educational work in establishing cross-cultural communication then, is to improve the social and necessary task. And the following three suggestions. First, practice before the construction of sustainable education in values, we must first clarify the context of the evolution of modern society. Second, sustainable education can take a more multi-method and field in adult education, and respect for differences, and promote self-directed learning as core values. Third, sustainable education can be combined with traditional social life to appropriate integration into the pulse of modern social life.

Resumo:
The high value of good health in Africa and the serious threat to life posed by diseases that plague the African continent including South Africa, are highlighted in this thesis. The question whether the church in South Africa as a stakeholder in human development in Africa, contributes meaningfully to the continental and national vision of "a better life for all" or "good health for all" is posed and an attempt made to answer it. Operating from the Western world-view, the Hervormde Kerk in Suidelike Afrika (HKSA) is found not to be contributing meaningfully to the realisation of the African vision of "good health for all". Resistance to cure and healing by means of Western medicine and pastoral care and counselling as well as a lack of spiritual and numerical growth in the HKSA are identified as consequences of the imposition of exclusively Western Christian theological formulations on the African church. The assumption underlying this thesis is that ministry to the sick in the African mainline churches should recognise the role played by supernatural forces in the belief systems of Africans regarding health and illness. This assumption is based on the fact that theological formulations are socially influenced and constructed. Following Zerfass' methodological model, this research examines the principles underlying the ministry to the sick in the HKSA and the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika (NHKA); highlights the core African beliefs with regard to the health and illness discourse and practice; points out the shortcomings of the current ministry to the sick in the HKSA. The findings of the investigation into the theological tradition and the results of the exploration of the literature on the African context are brought into the critical dialogue. On the strength of findings of the critical dialogue between the church's traditional theological theory and the results of the exploration of the literature on the African context, the church's healing ministry is recommended as a necessary part of the church's official task in a black South African context.
