In the article deals with socio-political views of one of brightest representatives of the French Enlightenment era, the historian of Russia P.-Sh. Leveque. The great interest is the analysis of the views by Leveque on the most urgent problems of state and public arrangement of Russia of the XVIIIth century: the reign of Peter I and Catherine II. In considering the topic judgments of the French historian with the ideals of the one of the leading philosophers of the Enlightenment era, D. Diderot were compared.

There are about seven billion people on earth, and only more than two hundred of them have their own state. The antiquity of the state system is a characteristic feature of the Uzbek people. The well-known figures who created the system of formation, development, improvement and practice of the system of governance testify to the ancient history of this nation. In the effective work of the administration, the enlightenment reforms of the heads of state have certainly made a worthy contribution to the enlightenment of culture and the arts, and this has always been recognized. Chinese Confucianism, which emerged during the Axial Age, has had a profound influence on many intellectual and cultural movements in history, including the European Enlightenment. This article analyzes the influence of Confucianism on the European Enlightenment from four perspectives: human rights, a benevolent government, religion and nature. The humanist spirit propagated by Confucianism was similar to the views expressed by Enlightenment thinkers on reason and human rights and provided a powerful ideological weapon for Enlightenment thinkers to criticize religious theocracy and break through the darkness of the Middle Ages. During this process of learning and absorbing the humanist spirit of Confucianism, French Enlightenment thinkers developed the rational and critical spirit of the Enlightenment and paved the way for intellectual liberation. Today, the world is facing the new challenges of global climate change, artificial intelligence and genetic technology. In the context of these global problems, China and the West can learn from each other and join efforts to gather new ideological resources to carry out a new ideological enlightenment movement on a global scale and achieve sustainable development for all humanity.

Abstract It seems obvious that Nietzsche has influenced the Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947). The extent to which Adorno and Horkheimer base their argument on Nietzsche, however, remains controversial. By analyzing an early draft of the first excursion of the Dialectic of Enlightenment from 1943, this article demonstrates that Nietzsche was more important for the development of its main concepts than has been assumed, in particular his analysis of myth and enlightenment. In the earlier version of the Ulysses-chapter Nietzsche, together with Rudolf Borchardt, is a pivotal point of reference. Indeed, it is the Nietzschean reflection on Homer and on the pre-Homerian epic—and Borchardt’s interpretation of these themes—that Adorno views as the first original form of the dialectics of enlightenment.

The article deals with the political views of Ivan Vasilievich Kireevsky in connection with the history of censorship prohibition of the journal “European” published by him. The text of the report due to which the journal was closed is analyzed. Special attention is paid to the idea of “merging minds together”, interpreted in the text of the denunciation as the basis of Republican beliefs. The author reconstructs Kireevsky's political views in the context of the influence of German romantic ideas on Russian social thought in the first half of the XIX century. The author clarifies Kireevsky's attitude to the ideals of the Great French Revolution and concludes that his views are opposed to the radical vector of the European Enlightenment as a whole. The author demonstrates the historical context in which the views of young Kireevsky are formed, and focuses on the contrast between the Enlightenment and the Romanticism era, which is associated in Russia with the counter-enlightenment reaction of the times of the Holy Union. The author reconstructs Kireevsky's religious and philosophical views, which, following V.S. Solovyov, are characterized as philosophical, romantic Christianity. Kireevsky's ideas are compared with those of representatives of other trends of Russian social thought that were influenced by German Romanticism − theorists of official conservatism, as well as P.Ya. Chaadaev. Their conceptual differences in understanding the relationship between “world” and “national” are revealed. The author demonstrates Kireevsky's socio-political concept, in which the “organic” development of people's life is contrasted with the “violent” establishment of social institutions. It is concluded that the primacy of spiritual unity over political aspirations in Kireevsky's worldview leads him away from both republican beliefs and official imperial conservatism.

A jurisdictional dispute over the burial of suicides in Electoral Saxony in the years 1702–1706 brought into sharp contrast conflicting views of the body in popular belief and Lutheran pastoral theology, and in the secularizing project of the early Enlightenment. The dispute centred on the practical, local implications of territorialism, a theory of church subordination to the state developed in the 1690s by the Saxon jurist Christian Thomasius (1655–1728), the most influential German political philosopher of the early Enlightenment. Considered in its intellectual and institutional contexts, the Saxon dispute illustrates the importance of the body to an understanding of secularization, the early Enlightenment and the history of suicide.

The Bristol doctor James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848) is acknowledged as Britain's foremost student of anthropology and ethnology in the early nineteenth century. At a time when European scholars increasingly embraced racial theories to account for cultural diversities, Prichard was a stout defender of monogenism. Being was brought up as a Quaker, he later converted to Anglicanism, embracing the Evangelical wing of the church. He regarded the unity of mankind as a necessary precondition in the struggle to uphold Christian morality under threat of materialism and Utilitarianism. Oddly, his theories have often been misrepresented, in particular their opposition to contemporary racial theorizing has been underestimated. My dissertation, the first study dedicated exclusively to Prichard, explores his notions of man's place in nature and puts them in the context of contemporary European learning. This comprises an investigation into his theories of insanity as well as his ethnological writings laid down in his Researches into the Physical History of Mankind and other works. In order to support monogenism Prichard became a self-taught expert in philology and mythology, adding the latest results of continental scholarship to the knowledge acquired at Edinburgh University. He studied German comparative philology years before the method spread in Britain, availing himself of methods deemed by many as theologically dangerous. Yet, synthesizing German Romantic theories with Edinburgh learning, Prichard's anthropology remained within the framework of Christian piety, culminating in the assertion that mankind was a unity due to its common "psychology" which Prichard inferred from his observation that all human tribes believed in a life after death. The concept of the atonement, so important for early nineteenth-century Evangelicals, came to stand at the core of Prichard's anthropology. But his conflation of science and theology appeared increasingly unacceptable. By delineating the debates Prichard was engaged in, the thesis adds to the understanding of the development from eighteenth-century thought to secularized mid-nineteenth-century theories of man.

Early modern Europeans, particularly during the Enlightenment, looked outwards to foreign lands to satisfy their curiosity, enhance theories or support nationalist or religious agendas, as well learn from other advanced civilizations. This dissertation examines British and French views of China's political economy during the Enlightenment until the publication of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. It studies the construction of knowledge on China's political economy by British and French primary travellers, geographers and philosophers, which results in several conclusions. First, while certainly evident in eighteenth century encounters with China, the sinophilia/sinophobia dichotomy is a flawed way to assess early Enlightenment perceptions of China's political economy. Rather there was a striking degree of consensus among sources that have been conventionally divided. Second, Europeans did not possess comfortable assumptions of superiority in the area of political economy and expressed a great degree of civilizational relativism. Finally, Enlightenment commentators and observers displayed a genuine interest in what could be learned from China. At times, Europeans used China as a mirror for self-evaluation and exploration, such as when considering views of economic culture. In other instances an active engagement with the Chinese model existed, as philosophers analysed how aspects of the Chinese system could be reconciled with - and even be used to improve - their own burgeoning theories of political and economic organization. China's military weakness and scientific stagnation offered insight on pitfalls to avoid. Europeans often viewed China's history, geography and population as unique and thus argued that Chinese practices could not be replicated in a European setting. On topics such as foreign trade and the form of government, China was dismissed as a useful model, not on normative grounds, but rather because its uniqueness and singularity meant it could not comfortably be worked into the universal models that characterized European Enlightenment thought.

This paper analyses Mr. Scogan and his treatment of women with the use of Althusser’s Marxist theory which (supposedly and in this case successfully) reveals the ideology which infuses every State and every larger social group. Feminist theory is then used to analyse his philosophy which influences both his utopia, “the Rational State”, as well as his treatment of women – the conclusion drawn after analysing several events or discussions in Crome Yellow, such as on the Home Farm, the Rational State and the Charity Fair was that Mr. Scogan is perhaps not representative of all men and certainly not of men (and men’s notions) at the timeof Crome Yellow’s publication, but he is representative of a stereotypical man who oppress women based on their femininity. The worst case scenario drawn was that Mr. Scogan could be a rapist of young virgins.

Abstract This chapter discusses accounts of hope found in the works of important Enlightenment thinkers: René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, Baruch de Spinoza, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant. The paper’s guiding questions are: Where are discussions of hope located within these thinkers’ works? Do the authors provide an account of what hope is? Do they ascribe a certain function to hope? Most authors of the Enlightenment, with the exception of Kant, write about hope in the context of a general account of the passions. Their characterization of hope closely resembles the “standard definition” of hope in contemporary debates. According to this definition, hope consists of a desire and a belief in the possibility, but not the certainty, of the desired outcome. It turns out, however, that Descartes, Hobbes, and Hume advocate a stronger evidential condition for hope than is common today: According to their view, we do not hope for what we take to be merely possible, no matter how unlikely it is; we hope for what we take to be more likely. Kant’s account differs from the other ones in important respects: He does not treat hope as an affect and he does not require a probability estimate, but grounds hope in faith.

This chapter focuses on Immanuel Kant's analysis/view of the cultural phenomenon called Aufklärung and his argument that the Enlightenment was “a great act of courage, a passionate invitation never to be afraid of emancipation.” In 1784, Kant published a short essay advancing an “Idea for a Universal History from a Cosmopolitan Point of View.” The article discussed the growing importance of the Aufklärung and distinguished between the traditional “work of practicing empirical historians” and the effort to draft instead an “[i]dea of universal history.” The chapter considers Kant's views on the “enlightenment,” whether we now live in an enlightened age, and the clash between faith in God and Enlightenment reason. It also examines Kant's description of the Enlightenment as a precise modality of the exercise of reason, which was animated by a strong “spirit of freedom” and intimately connected with mankind's natural need for knowledge.

Abstract The rise of the natural sciences radically changes our view of the physical universe. Nearly all the great Scriptures were written before the rise of modern scientific knowledge. This means that, not only are particular statements of physical fact in the Scriptures liable to be in error, but the whole view of the universe which they presuppose is almost certainly incorrect. It is not surprising that the sciences were sometimes seen as challenges to religious belief, and opposed by religious authorities with a stake in preserving the status quo. The best-known case of such a conflict between science and religion was the condemnation of Galileo by the Holy Inquisition for suggesting that the earth circled the sun instead of being at rest in the centre of the universe. The fact that Galileo was right and the Church authorities wrong at least establishes that revelation must be subject to correction by observation, and that it is certainly not inerrant with regard to physical facts. Scripture expresses the view of the world which was current at the time it was written; and that is, like all human views, partial and incomplete.

Most approaches to investigating research topics in the field of education and educational psychology are based on objectivity criteria. In some cases, subjective perceptions are considered to be biased and unreliable. The present paper draws upon a growing interest in emphasizing the use of Q-methodology in the field of education research. The article suggests that Q-methodology could be appealing for the research of digital intelligence as well as for other topics related to the area of education research. This positional paper aims to expand knowledge about the use of subjective methodologies and to set theoretical and methodological grounds to apply this specific methodology in the process of data collection and analysis. Therefore, the article depicts a corpus of scholar opinions to analyzing the concept of digital intelligence. Given that the concept of digital intelligence has a strong self-explanatory note, most of the authors preferred omnibus definitions for its enlightenment. The authors assert the need to formulate a definition of the construct rather than focusing on its dimensions. Thus, they use the Cattell–Horn–Carroll theory (CHC model) of intelligence to create the definition of digital intelligence. Based on this theoretical ground, methodological considerations and case studies are discussed in relation to applying Q-methodology to researching subjective views of students. The Q-methodology is described as an approach to providing a systematic study of the human subjectivity. Drawing on a study on digital intelligence, the utility of the method is illustrated. To expand the use of the Q-methodology, relevant examples of studies conducted by other authors are discussed.

The School of Architecture at The University of Utah has engaged in curriculum reimagination for the last three years. At the heart of this faculty-wide effort is the mission to make architects civic entrepreneurs and socially responsible global citizens. In response, we have sought to broaden our disciplinary horizons. Our collective has envisioned an integrated curriculum in which research methods and critical theories from many disciplines such as literature, queer theory, ethnography, or indigenous studies become the primer for design. Students learn that research is a systematic inquiry directed towards the creation of knowledge, and that each method produces different ways of knowing. Our primary aim is to disrupt the notion that the acquisition and application of knowledge is somehow universal, as opposed to the result of a particular set of cultural constructs. The “integrated model” with research methods at its base allows us to move towards a larger project of decolonizing design pedagogy. By decolonizing we mean braiding together Western and other ways of knowing to transform the imagination and structure of design practice and the academy. The metaphor of braiding in this case maintains the identity of each mode of knowledge, while strengthening the whole by introducing different critical views of land and property, design and project delivery, plus client and community1. Placing diverse critical theories as well as both western and indigenous research methods as the foundation of the curriculum allows us to ask difficult questions about how architecture can contribute to the cultural survival, resilience, and healing of cultures devastated by European Enlightenment, the foundation of modern education, with its roots in racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and economic exploitation of the colonized world.

Seeking consensuses from the public is difficult and this also applies to the heritage sector, particularly in heritage preservation. ‘What, why and how to preserve?’ are the core of debates in the field and the differences between points of views are basically due to the difference in valuation. In order to know everyone’s needs, views and expectations better and for sustainability, involving the community for preservation becomes fundamental. Education, an experience which does not only provide opportunities for enlightenments and widening horizons, but also introduce various concepts in terms of moral, ethical and social through systematic instructions. Having such great impact to community, promoting heritage education can be an effective approach awakening public consciousness on heritage preservation, and thus, enhancing people’s responsibility towards heritage, for both tangible and intangible, and developing a sustainable future for heritage through public engagement. However, it is necessary to understand the structure or the level of engagement prior setting the goal for heritage education. A model for classifying the level of engagement from performance is proposed for clarification and appraisal. This model is part of the research project of Community Engagement with Heritage in Macau which has an intention to examine its level of community engagement and give suggestions. This essay will first discuss community engagement, then classify the levels of engagement with models and lastly argue heritage education can elevate the level of community engagement which ultimately achieves the aim of heritage preservation.

The philosophy of Zen Buddhism occupies a very important place in V. Pelevin’s prose. The novel «Chapaev and Void» is a Zen novel that tells the story of the enlightenment process of Peter the Void. Chapaev plays the role of a Zen master, imitating or creating koans to inspire Peter the Void. The original meaning of the word “koan” is a judicial document of the ancient Chinese government. Later, the term “koan” was borrowed from Zen Buddhism, and its content is usually a story about a Zen master, a dialogue between the master and his students, questions and hints from the master. The story of “Anagama Buddha” and the “clay machine gun” is the last koan of the novel. At the same time, Chapaev is the reincarnation of Anagama Buddha, whose pinky is a clay machine gun with the power to turn everything into nothingness. The article discusses the sources of the concepts of “Buddha Anagama” and “clay machine gun” and the role of the koan, composed of these concepts, in the implementation of the ideas of Zen Buddhism in the novel. There is no ideal prototype of Anagama; the clay machine gun is the sarira of Buddha Anagama, which is the result of Buddhist practice. The koan «Buddha Anagama and the Clay Machine Gun» was not only narrated, but also realized by Chapaev, which confirms Pelevin’s appeal to Zen Buddhism at different levels of the novel’s structure organization.

First-generation students have been a focus in higher education research over the past ten years. However, limited attention has been paid to engineering students who are the first in their generation to enter university. The paper reports on data collected as part of a longitudinal study of first-generation engineering students at a South African university during the early stages of the pandemic. First-generation students, who already face multiple difficulties in their educational journey, were confronted with a juxtaposition during the lockdown. As engineering students, they are inducted into technical approaches to problem-solving via systematic and analytical exploration. Levi-Srauss contrasts this notion of the ingenieur, grounded in the Enlightenment belief in the superiority of rational scientific reasoning, with the bricoleur, who finds solutions by “doing things with whatever is at hand”. With the lockdown period being less amenable to structured problem-solving, students often had to resort to more improvised approaches to accommodate their studies and their shifted precarious everyday routines. The study not only adds to literature on firstgeneration engineering students, but also provides insight into the ways in which these students cope with obstacles over which they have little control. In the process a picture of resilient agency emerges that challenges a narrow deficit view of students with limited resources.
