Abstract. The present study concerns the digital documentation of the city wall of Verona. The "Verona Città Murata" project began in 2015 thanks to the research agreement between the Municipality of Verona (UNESCO office) and the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia. The project stems from the request to develop tools to document the site's conservation to initiate timely restoration, management, and maintenance studies. Measures for protecting, conserving, and enhancing a comprehensive and impressive cultural and natural heritage, such as the Magistral Walls and the Veronese Park, are complex and multifaceted. The multi-disciplinary aspect and the use of flexible tools to manage the information and analyses obtained during the study phase are fundamental. The research aims to optimize the fortified system's acquisition process by validating integrated survey methods and assessing point cloud data's potential, limitations, and planimetric and elevation accuracy (TLS, MLS, UAVs). On the one hand, the research products are aimed to structure a methodology of valuable representation for the documentation and diagnostic and conservative analysis of the artifact; on the other hand, they will become a helpful tool for the narrative description of Verona's fortifications to disseminate and valorize the fabric of military technology.

In response to the global challenges brought on by climate change, cities around the world are adapting, innovating through nature-based strategies for sustainable development. Climate adaptation requires new interdisciplinary approaches in which different disciplines as well as research and practice proactively co-create and collaborate on adaptation to reduce the ongoing effects of anthropogenic climate change. Although awareness on climate adaptation is on the rise, new approaches for urban development are still in development. Moreover, existing approaches mainly focus on local-scale levels or lack a crossover with urban and landscape planning. The present contribution offers an example of an integrated approach bridging urban climatology, landscape planning, and governance to assess and develop climate adaptation solutions linking city and district levels. The city of Verona was taken as a case study to test this approach and its implications for the development of a green and blue infrastructure with a climate-responsive master plan for the district of Verona South. Through critical reflection on the application of the approach to the case study, we aimed to identify its potentials and barriers. Based on this reflection, we provide herein recommendations on how climate modelling can be integrated into planning, as well as on how urban planners and urban climatologists can support each other in making credible and salient climate adaptation solutions.

Purpose City image has been defined as the sum of beliefs, ideas and impressions people hold regarding a city. While abundant literature has explored city image from tourists’ perspectives, few studies have explored residents’ perceptions, and even fewer have compared city image as perceived by tourists and residents. In addition, very few studies have compared tourists’ and residents’ perceptions of city image in small- to medium-sized destinations. Considering these research gaps, the purpose of this paper is to address city image in a medium-sized destination, Verona, in northern Italy with three specific objectives: to examine residents’ perceptions of the city of Verona’s image; to examine tourists’ perceptions of the city of Verona’s image and to compare the perceptions of the two groups. Design/methodology/approach The research was conducted through questionnaires collected among residents and tourists in Verona. Questionnaires were based on a multi-item scale addressing four dimensions of the city image. Findings The findings show that residents and tourists hold similar perceptions of city image regarding services and leisure, security and entertainment. The only significant difference in city image concerns the municipal facilities. Specifically, residents are more critical than tourists about this dimension of city image. Practical implications The research provides useful implications for policy makers and destination management organisations, and shows some strengths and weaknesses of Verona. Originality/value The study addresses the image of a medium-sized city that is typical in the Italian context, thus enhancing knowledge about city image. In addition, by testing and enhancing a scale previously used only to measure residents’ perceptions, the study provides a common measurement instrument to compare tourists’ and residents’ perceptions.

Henry Reed’s “A Map of Verona” became the title piece of the only poetry collection published by this multi-talented Englishman (1946). By recalling his trip to Naples and prophesying his devotion to Verona, the poem foreshadows Reed’s lifelong passion for Italy. In “A Map of Verona,” Reed is unique among map-poets in presenting himself as the star-crossed lover of a place, whose mapped image he eroticizes into the beloved’s body. Because Reed ultimately rejects his map as illusory, the poem invites us to consider the type of map he was gazing at while composing “A Map of Verona.” This paper, the fourth in a series about the use of poetry in the teaching of geography, argues that Reed might have used the 1928 edition of Italy from the Alps to Naples, one of the popular Baedeker travel guides esteemed for their accurate maps and plans. Yet a gulf separates the Baedeker map of Verona from earlier, more romantic depictions of the city. Perhaps no image comes closer to sharing Reed’s sensibility than the complementary views of Verona displayed in Braun and Hogenberg’s magnificent Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1581).

AbstractGaetano Spandri (1796–1859) was a “diligent scholar of the physical sciences,” a private collector and maker of scientific instruments who worked in Verona in the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in Verona, the city famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s iconic masterpiece Romeo and Juliet Spandri was primarily a physicist and astronomer, but he was also interested in meteorology and natural sciences. The main sources of information about his scientific work are handwritten papers, parts of his private correspondence, and scientific reports kept at the Verona Academy of Agriculture. For most of his life, he collaborated with the physicist Giuseppe Zamboni and was in contact with important physicists and astronomers of his time. His private apartment was equipped with a rich library, an astronomical and meteorological observatory, and a large room where he gathered a rich and important collection of scientific instruments.

Luigi Lippomano was a deeply worried man. He had heard that Lutheran ideas were being debated openly in Verona—even in such inappropriate places as “the piazzas, the workshops, the taverns, and even the women's washrooms.” As bishop of Verona, responsible for the city's spiritual health, he feared that he would see the city reduced to outright heresy. He felt increasingly stymied, watching his flock “become more corrupted every day” from inappropriate books and conversation, the “idle chatter of a few gossips.” And so, at a certain point, he had had enough. “How can I … stay silent,” he asked, “cross my hands, close my eyes, shut my ears, and act like a mute dog that cannot growl?” The result of his frustration and fury was a series of publications seeking to block the perceived threat of Protestant infiltration.

Paul F. Grendler suggested the year of 1420 as a symbolic date marking the dawn of Renaissance humanist teaching in the Latin education system. In 1420, the commune of Verona employed Guarino Guarini da Verona (1374–1460) to teach on the basis of Cicero’s letters and speeches. The anniversary has posed an opportunity to challenge a stereotype of two epochs: the Middle Ages and Renaissance, perpetuated in contemporary narration. I have presented my own image of these epochs, synthetic and simplified, yet based on historical facts. The synthetic approach to the similarities and differences between the Middle Ages and Renaissance, suggested here, is coherent with the changes which took place at the dawn of Italian Renaissance education (presented in the second part of the article). I have found out that this development was possible owing to personal contacts among humanists and their familiarity with inspiring texts. I have also discovered that before 1420, before Renaissance humanist education was introduced to public city schools, it had left its mark on self-education, informal relations, private city schools and urban home schooling. Only then did studia humanitatis became attractive to Italian communes and started to employ teachers knowledgeable about the new curriculum. The differences between the Renaissance and medieval education models in Italian public city schools include primarily the means at hand (i.e. the curriculum, the obligatory reading and partly the teaching organisation). They did not pertain to the major goals set by the then teachers (i.e. providing children and adolescents with knowledge and skills that they found useful in adult life, coupled with moral teaching and developing their habits). In my opinion, the Renaissance education model is continuation of the medieval model rather than its opposition because these two models complement each other harmoniously.

Abstract A fairly new medium for westerners, manga joins the variety of already existing “shakespeares”, bringing a fresh and vivid perspective on some of the most famous Shakespearean plays. This paper discusses several representations of space, with a particular focus on the city (Verona), the Capulet ballroom, and Juliet‘s bedroom, as they are rendered by artists in three manga transmediations of Romeo and Juliet coming from different cultural contexts (British, American, and Japanese). The paper will also explore the ways in which the three cultures play with Shakespeare‘s original Italian setting and negotiate their influence over one another at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The article aims to shed light on everyday bottom-up practices of local solidarity groups in a predominantly exclusionary and nativist context. Considered as one of the most hostile settings in the Italian peninsula, with an elevated presence of far-right and populist right actors, the city of Verona offers an interesting case as con-comitantly the capital of migration of the Veneto region. Against the elevated presence of an ethnonationalist outlook to urban membership, a local network of grassroots actors challenges exclusionary practices in solidarity with newcomers from various legal statuses and backgrounds. These grassroots actors sharing the memory of collective struggles collaborate to overcome both social hostility and limitations of the institutional reception system in their own hometown. Premised on 3 years of fieldwork, the analysis draws from personal testimonies alongside visual narratives and archival research in offering a multidimensional historical investigation of everyday solidarities in an unlikely setting.

The members of the Torroja family were extremely important as advisers on political and military strategy to the counts of Barcelona (monarchs of the Crown of Aragon) Arnaldo was elected Grand Master of the Knights Templar (1181–1184). On 30 September 1184, the Templar Master passed away in the city of Veneto; Arnaldo de Torroja was buried at the church of San Vitale in Verona. The church was destroyed when the river Adige flooded it in the 18th century, and it was closed down in 1760 as a result of the damage caused. Some years ago, behind a wall, a sarcophagus was discovered on which was carved the typical Templar cross (Cross pattée) and, in 2016, it was opened by a team of Italian scientists. The skeletal remains corresponded to the age Arnaldo. Thanks to the book that I recently published “Armorial de los Obispos de Barcelona, siglos XII–XXI”, it has been realized that the sarcophagus of the brother of Arnaldo of Torroja, Guillermo is contained within the Family heraldry “Golden a castle of Gules”, they requested that the aforementioned bishop’s remains be analysed, in order to compare them with those of Arnaldo.

Abstract The early Christian apocryphon 5 Ezra (2 Esdras) 2:1-32 describes two distinct but unidentified “mothers.” The first (2:1-7) is desolate, forlorn, and consigned to “destruction”; the second (2:15-32) is encouraged, glorified, and triumphant. It is generally recognized that the first “mother” represents the city of Jerusalem, “Mother Jerusalem.” The identity of and literary/thematic inspiration(s) behind the second “mother,” however, are uncertain. The main thesis of this paper is that the “mother” in 2:15-32 represents the Christian church, “Mother Church.” The primary evidence for this identification is the remarkable thematic and verbal parallels between 5 Ezra’s descriptions of the “mother” and the characterizations of “Mother Church” in the writings of Cyprian. Furthermore, the writings of Zeno of Verona and Lactantius contain lists of Christian ecclesiastical “works of mercy” that are close to 5 Ezra 2:20-22. Our findings suggest that 5 Ezra is a post-250 Latin composition of North African origin.

Introduction: Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium mainly associated with hospital acquired infections and in immunocompromised individuals who stay in hospitals for a long time. In recent years, it has become increasingly resistant to many different types of antibiotics. The production of the metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) enzyme is one of the primary causes of this resistance. This study aimed to detect the presence of MBL genes that belong to the verona integrin metallo-β-lactamase (bla-VIM) and imipenemase (bla-IMP) groups in the isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii from burn patients. Methodology: One hundred and seventeen (117) isolates of A. baumannii were obtained from patient specimens using traditional methods followed by using the VITEK 2 (BioMérieux, Les Pennes-Mirabeau, France) identification system. Metallo β-lactamases were detected in the imipenem-resistant strains by using imipenem disks on Muller-Hinton agar. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was utilized to examine 117 isolates for the detection of MBLs encoding genes such as bla-VIM, and bla-IMP. Results: Imipenem resistance was detected in 78.6% of the patients. The PCR assays of the isolates identified bla-VIM-1, bla-VIM-2, bla-IMP-1 and bla-IMP-2 genes at the rates of 17%, 40.1%, 29.9% and 4.2%, respectively. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the majority of A. baumannii isolates harbour one or more of the detected genes, signifying that the production of MBLs plays a pivotal role in resistance mechanisms.

Verona is scientific test bench, in which dualism city-countryside vanishes to the advancing of the wide and dense definition of «post-urban landscape». A vegetal-built basement, that radiates its tentacles in open/not-bound field, renewed cathedral protectress of life and evolution, structured (with project’s rules) with Super-Cartesian layers giving rise to a Hyper-rational mesh, jeopardized from obsessive and frequent interference. Chameleon monoliths, fixed objects in Continuous Movement as paradoxical reply to mutual adaptation’s dwelling, in which «not the strongest will survive, but the most suitable». This ability to adaptations is the key point on tomorrow’s questions, according to inhabiting as a form of «stamina», without that the rigid streamlining reduced dwelling to legislative and tabular count; but, going back to crucial questions involving, will always involve, the first and the last man. This article presents a detailed study of the stately palace of the Villa Giusti-Puttini, a building that, over the centuries, has undergone repeated transformations since its construction in the first half of the 15th century. For the study of this palace, owned between the 15th and 17th centuries by one of the most important families in the city of Verona (Italy), the authors have followed a methodology covering indirect sources (documentary and bibliographical) as well as direct ones (the building and constructive techniques, architectural and decorative elements, murals, etc.). This study expands the information available on the building as well as expanding knowledge on the history of architecture of the Veneto villa as a defining architectural phenomenon in 16th- and 17th-century architecture whose extensive influence was still felt in the 19th century. The history compiled through this research also contributes to a renewed interpretation of the phenomenon, which is viewed as a process for the transformation and adaptation of a pre-existing building to fit the needs of any given period. This methodology, which could potentially facilitate the interpretation of similar buildings, and its combination of documentary, material, constructive, decorative, and cultural elements could constitute an example for the historical and architectural reading of buildings and are not merely limited to Renaissance buildings.

The research is concerning two unusual evidences of the late Medieval art, which could be seen in the Museum of the cathedral St. Stephan in Vienna. Both of them are related to Herzog Rudolf IV of Austria (1358 - 1365). One artefact in the museum is his silk gold woven shroud elaborated with especial mastership from Chinese silk in Tabriz, a city in present Iran. Especially important for this fabric is that thanks to the interwoven name of the ruler it could be dated precisely. The road of this Near East fabric to Europe and to the tomb of the Herzog in Vienna could be reconstructed. Rudolf IV died suddenly during the visit to his relative Bernabo Visconti in Milano who was one of the richest men in Europe by that time. Probably the fabric was brought across the Silk Road to Constantinople and further across the sea to Genova and to the city of silk Lucca and then to Milano. Such gold woven fabrics from the Islamic world could be found not rarely in the European ruler’s tombs. The second unusual object in the cathedral museum is a portrait of the Herzog. So far this portrait was attributed to a Prague artist. But it could be proved that it originated from Upper Italy and probably was painted by an artist from Verona who was associated to the society around the great humanist Francesco Petrarca. This portrait rises the question about the emergence of early ruler's portraits in Eu-rope and in this aspect is also related to achievements of the „Palaeologus Renaissance“ art in South – East Europe. The two objects are considered as expression forms of the ruler’s funeral culture of the late Medieval age. In the context formed by the comparative approach new possibilities for analysis are created which cross over the traditional methodology of History of Art.

Purpose Accommodation sharing is a major trend shaping the hospitality industry, and Airbnb is the most prominent sharing platform driving this growth. While price convenience is reported as one of the main strengths of Airbnb accommodations, only a few studies have examined price determinants. In particular, it is unclear whether hosts dynamically adjust prices for shared accommodation based on their experience with price management and on the level of market demand. The purpose of this paper is to fill this gap by suggesting and testing a comprehensive hedonic pricing model. Design/methodology/approach Data from all 1,056 Airbnb listings for accommodations available in the city of Verona, Italy on four booking dates in 2016 are collected and analysed through regression analysis. Findings The results highlight that price is significantly related to the level of the host’s accumulated experience and the level of market demand on a specific booking date. The findings provide support for the ability of hosts to dynamically adjust prices for their accommodations. Practical implications Drawing on the innovator’s dilemma theory, this study suggests some strategies that traditional hotels may adopt to react to the disruptive nature of Airbnb. Originality/value This is one of the few studies to address hosts’ pricing strategies and specifically consider price adjustments owing to variations in host experience and market demand.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe how migration affects the care of older people in Italy. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on anthropological fieldwork by one of the authors. This consisted of in-depth interviews with 20 “badanti” (migrant caregivers), with relatives of older people and with social workers in the city of Verona, Italy. It further included extensive study of secondary materials on the topic of migrant care of older people. Findings Badanti, Italian families and older people find themselves locked in an uneasy contract: badanti because they are exploited and often unable to find better, formal employment; Italian families because they are aware that they fail to render their moral duty to their aged parents and grandparents; and older people because they feel neglected and maltreated by their children. Yet the three parties also rely on each other to make the best of a precarious situation. The relationship between badanti and Italian elderly highlights the contradictions within Italian politics on care and migration. This case study shows how migrants help Italian families to hold on to the tradition of family care for ageing parents. Research limitations/implications The small sample of badanti and families provides a detailed and profound insight of the complexity of elder care in Italy but does not allow generalisation for developments in the country as a whole. Practical implications Policy makers should take notice of the indispensability of informal migrant care in present day Italy. Originality/value The originality of the paper lies in the in-depth conversations with badanti and in the way in which elderly care is contextualised in the Italian tradition of care and present day politics.

Exploring one’s boundaries through language mediation in pre-school The diversity of current classes invites us to look at learners as real examples of teaching practices. In environments characterized by very different stories, the learning experience brings with it the attempt to reformulate one’s experience in the desire to build a communication with the Other. Thanks to mediation, in multilingual environments this is achieved through the exploration of linguistic boundaries, allowing the learner to broaden their worldview and mature the two complementary concepts of diversity and individuality, sometimes revealed by existence a language different from one’s own, sometimes from the far from simple attempt to tell your own to someone else. To understand when, in a learner’s school life, the awareness of the concept of diversity (linguistics) begins to develop, this paper presents the results of a mediation activity conducted in three classes of a Pre-primary School in the city of Verona. The activity was proposed by the authors after an Éveil aux langues activity with the aim of understanding if and how an approach which aimed at developing the plurilingual competence, in the perspective of an inclusive language education, can change the representation of the language concept in learners from 3 to 6 years. The work of linguistic mediation carried out and the discourse analysis of teachers and learners showed that the previous teaching experience provided the class with an «external form of mediation» (Vigotsky, 1987) to be able to develop more abstract concepts related to linguistic diversity individually and through processes of meaning construction.

Padang Panjang can be considered as a heterogeneous city in the existence of a communal community. The city can position itself as a party that can explain the benchmarks of the critical attitudes of the reading community towards billboard texts. The thoughts of billboard readers can be transformed to a formulation model for the readers' critical attitude towards the billboard texts displayed on the roadsides. The readers' thoughts are perfunctory, inquisitive, curious, and their critical attitudes are influenced by a very complex city environment. Factors of education, religion, trade, intersection city (Ikua Darek, Head of Rantau) could be a practical barometer of politic. This study is aimed to answer what formulation model of the critical attitude of billboard texts readers in the city of the Veranda of Mecca is like and whether in Is the city full of complexity there is a possibility that ideology is seen as the cultural expressions both in verbal and communication form reflected on the billboard texts.

Cyberspace is examined in this study as an example of innovation in Islamic boarding schools in Veranda of Mecca, Padang Panjang. This study is restricted to six Islamic Boarding Schools located in Padang Panjang: the Padang Panjang Putra Thawalib, the Muhammadiyah Kauman, the Veranda of Mecca Integrated Islamic Boarding School, the Thawalib Putri Islamic Boarding School, and the Puteri Diniyyah College. This study approach makes use of qualitative research, and approaches for observation, documenting, and interviewing are used to acquire data. The findings revealed that a number of Islamic boarding schools made use of cyberspace as a teaching innovation during the pandemic, including the usage of robotics, YouTube, WhatsApp, Zoom, and other social media platforms, in addition to using lab space as a resource for learning innovations. The less competent signal, the fact that some professors still do not grasp technology, and the insufficient internet allowance are some of the suggestions and difficulties that educators and students encounter. Furthermore, a lot of students still do not comprehend distance learning, and there is still a lack of student enthusiasm in studying remotely.

Quranic education has long been a deeply ingrained tradition in Gorontalo City, often referred to as the "Veranda of Madinah." The enactment of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 on the Mandatory Reading and Writing of the Al-Quran in Gorontalo City can be seen as a form of state accommodation of this local wisdom. This study examines the background, legalization process, and implementation of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 among the people of Gorontalo City. Employing a qualitative descriptive research method based on George C. Edward's theory, the study finds that the implementation of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012 was only active and had programs for two years during the leadership of Adhan Dambea. After Adhan Dambea's term ended, no further programs were implemented by the government related to the Local Regulation. However, Quranic education remains widespread in Gorontalo City. In reality, the people of Gorontalo provide Quranic education not based on their knowledge of Local Regulation Number 6 of 2012, but rather out of their own self-awareness as Muslims, a tradition deeply embedded in their society.

The results of investigations of the dissolved organic substances and nutrients distribution in surface and bottom water of the Verbne lake in 2018-2019 are presented and analysed. In particular the annual values of the total dissolved organic substances content by parameters of permanganate and bichromate oxidizabilities are difined. Also the seasonal dynamics of such different organic compounds as humic acids, fulvic acids, carbohydrates and protein-like substance in surface and bottom water are considered. The concentration alterations of the nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon combinations of nutrients from seasonal factor are studied. The major hydrochemical characters of water (pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, degree of oxygen saturation of water, chemical oxygen demand) and their correlation with the seasonal changes of the general dissolved organic substances content and nutrient compounds are adduced. The traditional seasonal distribution of these organic substances indicates a good self-cleaning ability of the Verbne lake. The received results testify that the investigated Verbne lake belong to a evtrophic reservoir in which hydrobionts actively develop and there are important processes of accumulation and destruction of these substances that essentially influences on their component composition. The ecological features of the chemical composition of this water object are largely determined both by natural processes and anthropogenic pressure, which is manifested not only in the direct entering into the water products of human activity, but also indirectly, as a result of changes in the physical, chemical and biological factors in the aqueous environment. Monitoring of annual and seasonal changes of the total and components content dissolved organic substances and nutrients in the water along with other hydrochemical and hydrobiological indices makes it possible to assess the ecological state of water objects.

The linkage of suicide and crisis was a prominent feature of Weimar Germany's cultural landscape. In films as different as Bertolt Brecht and Slatan Dudow'sKuhle Wampeor Walter Ruttmann'sBerlin: Symphony of a Big City, suicide appears as a reaction to the darker aspects of urban modernity: an individual's answer to capitalist exploitation or personal drama in an otherwise smoothly functioning metropolis. In a number of contemporary novels the possibility of a suicide is disturbingly present. In Vicki Baum'sGrand Hotel, one character asks himself, “My God, does everyone now have his tea cup of veronal ready?” Tales of suicide also surfaced in the tabloid press which presented them as human interest stories. Partisan papers supported their respective stances by tying individual actions to political narratives, a strategy pursued by both Nazis and Communists as well as liberal reformers. Even schools' reports on pupils who had taken their own lives and farewell notes themselves echoed a general feeling that suicide was a sign of the times.

The industrialization process in Elche during the final years of the 19th century (1884-1906) implies the radical transformation of life forms and the emergence of the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. These social groups need new leisure modes: the City Council sponsors the creation of new urban recreational spaces, coffee shops, theaters proliferate. Summer has a new value because workers and owners move to the beaches of Santa Pola during the month of August. This is the practice that we understand as the “invention of summer”, a substantial category of the construction of contemporary society.

Capturing reality has been a constant aim of different movements throughout the history of the cinema. Historically, this challenge has been taken up by makers of both documentaries and fiction, through hybrid proposals that blended strategies from both fields. Even though these proposals have been ignored by traditional film historians, they constitute a persistent tendency from the cinema’s earliest times, as Rhodes and Springer pointed out in their book Docufictions: Essay on the intersection of documentary and fictional filmmaking (2006). There are good examples of these proposals in contemporary cinema that have even won awards at leading international film festivals, including the two movies referred to in this paper: the fictional Chop Shop made by Ramin Bahrani in 2007 and the documentary Foreign Parts by Verena Paravel and J.P. Sniadecki in 2010. Both movies try to portray the same reality in the form of the little known Willets Point (Queens, New York City). Both films aim to show the truth behind the reality portrayed by its inhabitants in real life situations. The main goal of this paper is to reveal their manner of doing this and to show how both movies, even though belonging to different genres, share the same strategies to such an extent that their images could be interchangeable.

Buildings represent 40% of the world's energy demand and CO2 emissions. In Argentina, buildings are responsible for 40% of the total annual energy consumption. The problem lies in an imbalance between the need to provide a high quality of life and comfort in office spaces, and the high energy cost required to meet that goal. Both a high comfort level and energy savings represent two objectives to be achieved. In this sense, this paper proposes a new methodology that combines onsite measurement with mathematical simulation tools. Innovative techniques and models are incorporated to make the tool, applying thermal-energy multi-objective optimization, which operates dynamically during working hours. The results show significant savings in energy consumption regarding cooling office spaces in the summer, from 57.5% to 83.3%, together with an increase in the thermal comfort quality, with improvements between 4.7% and 29.4%.

The purpose of this work was to develop a methodological tool to evaluate office space work performance during the summer period. The proposed tool is an optimal work performance indicator called IRLO, which combines environmental variables on thermal, air quality, visual and acoustic influence. Integrated measurements were run for its development alongside surveys to users-workers of an office building in the city of San Juan - Argentina. The results reveal the preference ranges of each variable, recognizing that in open plan offices, there is a greater environmental adaptive capacity than in closed plan offices. It is concluded, that the indicator stands out by providing a basis to identify work performance considering environmental variables that should, in the future, be considered in the design phase.

The City of Veranda of Mecca is the nickname for the City of Padang Panjang which can be interpreted as a road or gate to the City of Mecca. Along with the times, the nickname began to fade and experience a shift and even a decline in the understanding of Islam itself. Efforts to anticipate this, there is a desire to increase the religious values of the community by building an Islamic Center Area that is adequate and representative for a city scale with various supporting facilities needed, one of which is the Socio-Cultural Building in the Islamic Center Area of Padang Panjang City. The purpose of this research is to study and apply the planning aspects of high-rise buildings with reinforced concrete structures to be applied in a high-rise building construction design and to compare the dimensions and reinforcement in the planning with the results obtained from the author's analysis. At the time of doing the research the writer got some data such as column data, beams, floor slabs and other data from planners and data obtained directly by the author. In the data analysis method, the writer conducted a planning analysis and comparative evaluation of the structure of the Socio-Cultural Building in the Islamic Center area of Padang Panjang City using ETABS version 18 software. In terms of beam reinforcement, there are several significant differences. In the analysis of column calculations, in column K1 the dimensions and reinforcement become larger, column K2 has the same dimensions as the planner but the reinforcement is larger, columns K3 and K4 produce the same dimensions and reinforcement as the planning data. The calculation of the floor slab does not change, but in the calculation of the roof slab there is a difference between the thickness of the slab and the planning data. Numerous ornamental plants have been found to be symptomless hosts of various pospiviroids including Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd), and hence, may serve as potential inoculum reservoirs for susceptible vegetable plants. Production of tomato, potato, and pepper, on which viroids from the genus Pospiviroid can cause severe damage, represents two-thirds of the vegetable production in Montenegro. We tested vegetable, ornamental, and weed host plants for the presence of pospiviroids in September 2011. Altogether 80 samples were taken. Samples of ornamental plants (15 of Petunia spp., 7 of Impatiens spp., 4 of Verbena spp., 3 of Dahlia spp., 3 of Pittosporum tobira, 3 of Vinca spp., 2 of Brugmansia spp., 2 of avocado, 2 of Portulaca spp., and 1 of Datura sp.) were taken from three places of production. One sample per species was collected from symptomless eggplants, tomatoes, sweet peppers, and avocados in the vicinity of one glasshouse with ornamental plants. Twenty-two samples from sweet pepper and seven samples from tomato, all grown under cover and all showing potential virus-like symptoms, were collected from three places of vegetable production. Two samples of Solanum nigrum and three samples of unidentified weed species belonging to genus Solanum were taken from two glasshouses. With the exception of weed plants, samples consisted of fully developed leaves collected from five plants. All sampled ornamental and weed plants were symptomless. RNA was extracted from approximately 15 mg of leaf tissue with the MagMAX-96 Total RNA Isolation Kit (Life Technologies, Foster City, CA) in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions for the MagMAX Express Magnetic Particle Processor. Samples were tested by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR using semi-universal pospiviroid primers (Pospi1-RE/FW and Vid-RE/FW [3]). None of the samples reacted with the Vid-RE/FW primer pair. An amplicon of an expected size (approximately 196 nt) was produced with the Pospi1-RE/FW primer pair from one Verbena sp. sample. Direct sequencing was performed by Macrogen (Amsterdam, The Netherlands). Sequence analysis indicated the presence of CEVd. This finding was confirmed by sequence analysis of the DNA product obtained by RT-PCR using Pospi1-FW/RE from a new extraction. Further analyses using primer pairs CEVd-AS/S (1) and CEVd-FW2/RE2 (4) were performed to obtain the full viroid sequence. The sequence of 372 nt was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JN872140) and had 99% identity with two CEVd sequences from Verbena spp. (Accession Nos. EF192396 and DQ094297). To our knowledge, this is the first report of CEVd in a Verbena sp. in Montenegro and the second report in Europe (4). CEVd has been detected in Verbena spp. also in India and Canada and can be transmitted by seed (2). The infected Verbena sp. plants were not destroyed, since CEVd is not listed as a quarantine organism in Montenegro. The spread of CEVd infection to tomato could devastate the production of this crop in Montenegro. References: (1) A. Elleuch et al. Plant Protect. Sci. 39:139, 2003. (2) R. P. Singh et al. Eur. J. Abstract MIPC is one of the insecticides widely used by farmers to control brown planthopper or BPH (Nilaparvata lugens) in Padang City, Indonesia. Excessive use of insecticides can cause BPH to become resistant, followed by the death of natural enemies. This study aimed to determine the suppression of joint predators (Pardosa pseudoannulata and Verania lineata) against Nilaparvata lugens under MIPC Insecticide Exposure Conditions. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) factorial with two factors and five replications. The first factor was the dose of MIPC insecticide (0.75 g/l, 1.5 g/l, 2.25 g/l, and without application) and the second factor was the time of application (During BPH infestation and joint predators, before BPH infestation and joint predators, after WBC infestation and before joint predator infestation). The parameter observed were predation, body weight, and mortality. The results showed no interaction between dose and time of application on joint predator predation. Increasing the MIPC dose decreased the predation. Joint predators could suppress BPH populations of 40.6-43.6 individuals (78-81%) per day, but MIPC application and the presence of joint predators together reduced their predation rates. It is better to apply MIPC insecticide before or after the presence of joint predators to avoid negative impacts on joint predators.

This project tested rates of lignite-activated water (LAW) for its influence on seed germination, cutting propagation, and plant performance. LAW is a product of CAW Industries, Rapid City, S.D. LAW is water-activated by lignite in a process that includes the addition of sulfated castor oil, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium meta silicate, and fossilized organics from refined lignite. LAW is reported to improve many plant performance traits. Four rates were used in this study. Seed germination trials indicated no significant differences in germination percentage with LAW applications with the two species tested, Echinacea purpurea and Hibiscus dasycalyx. In a “closed” system, LAW enhanced cutting propagation success of Aster caroliniana, Cuphea micropetala, and Verbena `Homestead Purple', as measured by percent rooting and dry weight of roots produced. Cutting propagation of two woody species, Illicium henryi and Rosa banksiae, was not improved with LAW additions. In the SFASU Arboretum, pansy performance, as measured by plant dry weight, was improved one month after establishment.

Verbena brasiliensis Vell., commonly known as Brazilian verbena, is native to South America and has been introduced into North America, coastal Europe, southern Africa, and Australasia. Though partly cultivated for garden use, it is invasive in riverine areas and also on roadsides, forest margins, pastures, and waste areas (4). In Korea, this plant was first reported in 1998 in Jeju Island and has become widely naturalized by replacing indigenous plants and disrupting native ecosystems in most of southern part of Korea (3). Since 2009, powdery mildew on Brazilian verbena has been consistently found in several locations of Busan City, Korea. Symptoms appeared as circular to irregular white patches, which subsequently showed abundant hyphal growth on both sides of the leaves and on stems. High disease severity caused poor growth of the plants, resulting in premature senescence and reduced flowering. Specimens (n = 5) were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Appressoria on the mycelium were nipple-shaped or nearly absent. Conidiophores were 140 to 190 × 11 to 12.5 μm and produced 2 to 7 immature conidia in chains with a crenate outline. Foot-cells in conidiophores were straight, cylindric, relatively short, 50 to 65 μm long, and constricted at the very base of branching point from the hypha. Conidia were hyaline, ellipsoid to ovate, measured 28 to 38 × 18.5 to 22 μm (length/width ratio of 1.2 to 1.8), and contained distinct fibrosin bodies. Germ tubes were produced from the lateral position of conidia. No chasmothecia were observed. These structures are typical of the powdery mildew Euoidium anamorph of the genus Podosphaera. The morphological characteristics and measurements were consistent with those of P. xanthii (Castagne) U. Braun & Shishkoff (1). To confirm the identity, the complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of the isolate KUS-F27220 was amplified with primers ITS1/ITS4, and sequenced. The resulting 477-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KJ472787). A GenBank BLAST search of this sequence revealed 100% identity with Podosphaera sp. on V. bonariensis and V.× hybrida from Japan (AB462804 and AB040347). The Podosphaera sp. isolates listed above are now placed in P. xanthii (1). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing a diseased leaf onto leaves of three healthy, potted 2-month-old Brazilian verbena plants. Three non-inoculated plants served as controls. Inoculated plants developed signs and symptoms after 6 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated leaves was identical morphologically to that originally observed on diseased plants. Powdery mildew of Verbena spp. associated with Podosphaera sp. (including Sphaerotheca sp.) has been globally reported, but not on V. brasiliensis (1,2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of powdery mildew disease caused by P. xanthii on V. brasiliensis globally. Our field observations suggest that the powdery mildew could limit expansion of V. brasiliensis in Korea. References: (1) U. Braun and R. T. A. Cook. AbstractA “table altar,” perhaps one described by Cabrera (1822) almost 200 years ago and since unreported, is the only complete example of a class of four-legged sculptures known at present from Kaminaljuyu. Iconographic similarities between the monument and sculptures from southern piedmont and coastal centers and comparisons with other Kaminaljuyu sculptures suggest an early Late Preclassic date (Late Verbena-Early Arenal, approximately 300-200 B.C.). According to depictions on other southern-area monuments many “table altars” were formal, emblematic seats for rulers, or thrones, which had specific ideologies associated with them Review of monuments, including identification as a four-legged throne of the well-known sculpture, Stela 10, numbers the Kaminaljuyu corpus of thrones to date at a minimum of seven. The presence of thrones as a sculptural class at Kaminaljuyu in the Late Preclassic period provides more evidence of a long throne tradition reaching from Olmec times through the Maya Classic and into the Postclassic. Kaminaljuyu's thrones conceivably also add to other evidence of complex sociopolitics at the city during the Late Preclassic.
