Discussion.

Introduction. Conclusion.

The psychometric validation of a subjective measurement scale consists of many steps that we will expose and comment on during this thesis. We would rely more particularly on the work of psychometric validation of the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and the Schizophrenia Cooping Oral Health Profile and Index (SCOOHPI) that we have carried out. During the stages of the validation of this scale we particularly explored the question of the validity of the internal structure which is the heart of the reflexive field of our work. In this thesis we have 5 chapters. In Chapter 1, we defined the concepts to be studied and explained the relationship between schizophrenia and oral health, and presented the history of psychometric validation of subjective measurement scales. In chapter 2, we described the steps in the psychometric validation of subjective measurement scales, there are 2 main headings in psychometric validation: reliability and validity. Scale reliability is composed of 3 parts: internal consistency, reliability over time and sensitivity to change. The validity of the scale is composed of 4 parts: content validity, perceived validity, construct validity and structure validity. In chapter 3, we study the psychometric validation of the GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index) scale in a sample of French patients with schizophrenia.Cronbach's alpha shows a significant degree of internal consistency between items and the test-retest verifies the reliability over time. Then, the construct validity shows the existence of a relationship between the GOHAI scale and the DMFT (Dent Cariée, Absente, Obturation) and OHI'S (Simplifed Oral Hygiene Index) indices. Afterwards, the principal component analysis shows the existence of 3 subscales: physical functions, psychosocial aspects and symptoms related to the presence of dental diseases. Finally, the partial credit model verifies that the GOHAI scale is not unidimensional. In Chapter 4, we study the structural validity of the GOHAI scale using a sample of the general French population. The principal component analysis shows the existence of 3 subscales: pain and appearance of the teeth, psychological satisfaction with the state of the teeth and ability to eat. Then, the partial credit model verifies the unidimensionality of the GOHAI scale after grouping the response modalities. In Chapter 5, we study the psychometric validation of the Schizophrenia Coping Oral Health Profile and Index (SCOOHPI) scale using a sample of French patients with schizophrenia. The panel confirmed the content validity of the SCOOHPI scale. Perceived validity was verified with 30 individuals. Then, Cronbach's alpha shows a good degree of internal consistency between items. Then, the absence of relationship between the SCOOHPI scale and the GOHAI scale confirms the validity of the divergence. While the validity of the convergence was not measurable due to the lack of tools that measure a similar concept to the SCOOHPI scale concept. The principal component analysis shows the existence of 6 subscales: oral health, diet and oral hygiene, activity and organization, addiction and avoidance strategies. Finally, the partial credit model shows that the SCOOHPI scale is unidimensional after grouping the response modalities

The likelihood of conducting safe operations increases when operators ave effectively integrated their knowledge of the operation into meaningful relationships, referred to as knowledge structures (KSs). Unlike knowing isolated facts about an operation, well integrated KSs reflect a deeper understanding. It is, however, only the isolated facts that are often evaluated in training environments. To know whether an operator has formed well integrated KSs, KS evaluation methods must be employed. Many of these methods, however, require subjective, human-rated evaluations. These ratings are often prone to the negative influence of a rater's limitations such as rater biases and cognitive limitations; therefore, the extent to which KS evaluations are beneficial is dependent on the degree to which the rater's limitations can be mitigated. The main objective of this study was to identify factors that will mitigate rater limitations and test their influence on the reliability and validity of KS evaluations. These factors were identified through the delineation of a framework that represents how a rater's limitations will influence the cognitive processes that occur during the evaluation process. From this framework, one factor (i.e., operation knowledge), and three mitigation techniques (i.e., frame-of-reference training, reducing the complexity of the KSs, and providing referent material) were identified. Ninety-two participants rated the accuracy of eight KSs over a period of two days. Results indicated that reliability was higher after training. Furthermore, several interactions indicated that the benefits of domain knowledge, referent material, and reduced complexity existed within subsets of the participants. For example, reduced complexity only increased reliability among evaluators with less knowledge of the operation. Also, referent material increased reliability only for those who scored less complex KSs. Both the practical and theoretical implications of these results are provided.

Standardized formative mathematics assessments typically fail to capture the depth of current standards and curricula. Consequently, these assessments demonstrate limited utility for informing the instructional implementation choices of teachers. This problem is particularly salient as it relates to the mathematical problem solving process. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the psychometric characteristics of Structural-Symbolic Translation Fluency, a curriculum-based measure (CBM) of mathematical problem solving. The development of the assessment was based on previous research describing the cognitive process of translation (Mayer, 2002) as well as mathematical concept development at the quantitative, structural, and symbolic levels (Dehaene, 2011; Faulkner, 2009; Griffin, 2004). Data on the Structural-Symbolic Translation Fluency assessment were collected from 11 mathematics and psychometrics experts and 42 second grade students during the spring of 2016. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, frequencies, Spearman-Brown correlation, joint probability of agreement, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. Psychometric features of interest included internal consistency, inter-rater reliability, test-retest reliability, content validity, and criterion-related validity. Testing of the 9 research questions revealed 9 significant findings. Despite significant statistical findings, several coefficients did not meet pre-established criteria required for validation. Hypothesized modifications to improve the psychometric characteristics are suggested as the focus of future research. In addition, recommendations are made concerning the role of assessing the translation process of mathematical problem solving.

[Truncated abstract] Areal bone mineral density (BMD) is measured routinely in the clinic by a quantitative radiological technique, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). BMD is used widely to assess non-invasively but indirectly the mechanical fragility of bone and consequently is able to predict fracture risk. While BMD correlates well with in vitro measurements of bone strength it does not directly measure a mechanical property; half of incident minimally traumatic fractures in women occur with BMD values above the World Health Organisation defined threshold for osteoporosis. This arises partly because the mechanical strength of bone is dependent on its structural geometry and material strength as well as bone mineral mass. Essentially, bones fracture when load stresses exceed the mechanical capacity of the material to withstand them. The structural geometry (i.e., the amount of bone tissue and its complex three-dimensional arrangement within the macroscopic bone envelope) defines the stresses produced by a given load, while the intrinsic load capacity of the material is defined by the composition and microstructure of the bone tissue itself. Hip structural analysis (HSA) is a technique that elucidates the structural geometric component of bone strength; essentially combining information available from conventional DXA images of the proximal femur with a biomechanical beam model based on the stresses arising in a combination of pure bending and axial compression. A version of HSA has recently been released commercially, and has obtained US Food and Drug Administration approval for its clinical application. ... Given the acknowledged limitations of the HSA method when applied to 2-D projection images, a 3-D approach to structural geometry, using imaging modalities such as pQCT and QCT or a recently introduced version of DXA that mimics QCT, is indicated for the future. With that in mind and the possibility of the anthropometric phantom being adopted for future accuracy and precision assessments, improvements in the design of this phantom are recommended. Studies to better understand and verify Contents v the relevance of the 'local buckling' phenomenon as a structural geometric factor in the genesis of macro-fractures are also recommended. In summary, it is essential that superior (compared to BMD) non-invasively determined clinical predictors of bone fragility leading to fracture be investigated. Structural geometric variables are potential candidates. This has led to consideration of; (i) the need to progress beyond BMD for a more sensitive and specific bone strength measurement; (ii) theoretical advantages of structural geometry over BMD; (iii) limitations of the current HSA technique based on DXA, including those introduced by its restrictive assumptions; (iv) the value of HSA in longitudinal studies, exemplified by the 'normal' but rapid skeletal changes seen in human lactation, with possible implications for an analogous study of the menopause; and (v) an investigation, using a custom-designed anthropometric phantom, of the adaptation of HSA to certain emerging imaging modalities and methods able to resolve bone structural geometry in three dimensions.

In developing countries, there is a great demand for university education. In order to select students to universities a standardized test score is used. In Turkey, the Student Selection Test (SST) have important role in admission to universities. However, there is very limited knowledge about what SST mathematics sections actually measures. The main purpose of the present study is to evaluate the content of the mathematics subtest of the SST in line with mathematical cognitive skills and eventually provide construct related evidence for dimensionality of the test items. Within this framework, it is aimed to cross validate the mathematics subtest across gender groups, school types and two consecutive years. Also relations among mathematical abilities are investigated. This study is first in investigating what is measured by SST Mathematics sections and analyzing construct validity by testing several nested confirmatory factor models. Comparison of fit indices of five competitive models showed three-factor model has better fit indices in which Basic Computation Ability, Advanced Computation Ability and Geometry Ability is measured. It is concluded that problem solving items are not measuring a different process, but measures some sort of computation ability. There is a problem related to the content of the mathematics subtests of the SST in line with mathematical cognitive skills. Higher order cognitive skills are not measured properly. Three-factor model is tested about the invariance of the factors across gender, school types and years. It is concluded that invariant factor structure indicates that SST mathematics section is operating similarly for subgroups and years. The relations among mathematical abilities on three-factor model are investigated by item mapping and structural equation models. It is seen that Basic Computation Ability is a prerequisite to acquire Geometry Ability and Advanced Computation Ability.

Although most researchers agree that resilience is defined as the extent to which an individual bounces back and recovers from stress and adversity, the field has not yet settled on the underlying structure of the resilience construct; its lower-order factors remain in dispute and undefined. In this study, five of the most prominent resilience measures (i.e., Ego Resilience, Block & Kremen, 1996; The Resilience Scale, Wagnild & Young, 1993; The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Connor & Davidson, 2003; The Resilience Scale for Adults, Friborg, Hjemdal, Rosenvinge, & Martinussen, 2003; The Brief Resilience Scale, Smith, Dalen, Wiggins, & Tooley, 2008) were administered to two large samples of U.S. adults (N = 396 and 336, respectively). Through a combination of exploratory and confirmatory techniques, seven lower-order resilience factors were identified. Relationships between general resilience, lower-order resilience factors, and correlates were examined. Results reveal that lower-order resilience factors are moderately correlated with one another and are differentially related to outcomes of interest. Follow-up hierarchical regression and relative weights analyses further reveal that general resilience substantially overlaps with Big Five personality measures, but, in many cases, its lower-order factors do not. Consequently, it is recommended moving forward that researchers continue to study the resilience construct, but do so by focusing on lower-order resilience factors, rather than on global measures of the overall resilience construct.

There are two aspects to validation: one is establishing the very existence of a disorder, the other is determining how good our methods are of determining the presence of the disorder. Both aspects depend on the conception of the disorder as something with a causal structure implicating the symptoms of the disorder. The symptoms may figure in this structure as effects of a single latent variable, or as homeostatically related merely to one another, or in some more complex structure. But without some such conception of the causal structure of the disorder, we have no idea what we are about trying to validate criteria for the disorder. The problem in psychiatry is that we currently seem to be demanding that those causal structures should involve relations between psychological and physical variables; and we have no idea how to think of those relations in terms of causal processes and causal mechanisms.

A threat to external validity is any factor that limits the generalizability of an observed result. Unlike all threats to statistical conclusion and internal validities and some threats to construct validity, threats to external validity cannot ordinarily be controlled by design. Nor is there any disagreement on how threats to external validity should be controlled. In most instances, it can only be controlled by replication?—across subjects, situations and time frames. This seldom happens, unfortunately, because the academic incentive structure discourages replication. The contemporary “reproducibility crisis” was spurred by a collaborative group of social scientists attempting to replicate one hundred experimental and correlational studies published in three mainstream psychology journals. Sixty percent of replications failed to reproduce the published effect. Failures to control for threats to external validity that stem from uncontrolled variations in persons, situations, and time frames, parsimosniously explain the failure rate in this replication study.

Chapter 6 addresses the sub-category of internal validity defined by Shadish et al., as statistical conclusion validity, or “validity of inferences about the correlation (covariance) between treatment and outcome.” The common threats to statistical conclusion validity can arise, or become plausible through either model misspecification or through hypothesis testing. The risk of a serious model misspecification is inversely proportional to the length of the time series, for example, and so is the risk of mistating the Type I and Type II error rates. Threats to statistical conclusion validity arise from the classical and modern hybrid significance testing structures, the serious threats that weigh heavily in p-value tests are shown to be undefined in Beyesian tests. While the particularly vexing threats raised by modern null hypothesis testing are resolved through the elimination of the modern null hypothesis test, threats to statistical conclusion validity would inevitably persist and new threats would arise.

AbstractAs a moving component of the aircraft, the sealing state of the door will directly affect the aircraft's pressurization level and aerodynamic performance. The existing analysis methods of sealing structures mainly consider the compression deformation and contact stress of the seals. However, in practical engineering applications, it has been found that the sealing performance of cabin door depends on the interaction between the sealing structure and the seal. On the one hand, the tolerance fluctuation and elastic deformation of the sealing structure will cause the deviation between the actual compression ratio of the seal from the theoretical value; On the other hand, the deformation caused by the resilience of the seal will change the tolerance distribution of the sealing structure. In this paper, based on the local linear simplification of loading curve of the seal, the calculation efficiency of the large-size sealing structure’s deformation is improved, so that the compression ratio fluctuation of the seal is converted into the deformation tolerance which is included in the tolerance simulation of the sealing structures to obtain the distribution characteristics of step difference value on the aerodynamic surface as well as the different compression states of the seal. The validity of this analysis method is confirmed by comparing with the commercial software calculation and the practical measured data of the aircraft door.

AbstractEvery venture is developed under high uncertainty and causal ambiguity. A large majority of digital startups leverage the lean startup approach to validate the attractiveness of their venture, to reduce avoidable investments of scarce resources, and to structure the venturing process. Digital entrepreneurs highlight that prioritization and the definition of MVPs are two challenges that entrepreneurs face when applying the lean startup approach. We provide support on these particular challenges through a structured approach—the venture pyramid—to (in)validate digital business models in the face of high uncertainty. Furthermore, we map different types of digital business models with patterns of minimum viable products to inspire digital entrepreneurs and scientists alike. To illustrate our thoughts, we have developed two case studies of German startups that applied a process of rigorous iteration and learning to their venturing processes.

For turret-moored ship-type offshore structures such as floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units, the hull structure is affected by mooring and riser loads that are transferred through turret systems, in addition to environmental loads on the hull itself. Moreover, the existence of turret structures has an influence on the structural behavior of the hull around the turret system. In the structural design of FPSOs, the turret structure and its loads are considered in a direct analysis of hull structure for a realistic strength assessment of FPSOs. This paper investigates several specific techniques for hull structural analysis considering the interaction with the turret system. The linear gap function is utilized to represent the nonlinear contact behavior between the hull and turret structures. The linear superposition of structural responses is also adapted, and its validity is demonstrated in the case of hull–turret contact problems. These studies conclude that the hull structures with turret systems that involve contact nonlinearity in their interface can be assessed using the conventional hull strength assessment based on linear analysis. Moreover, by including the turret model directly in hull structural analysis, the uncertainty arising from hull–turret interface loads can be reduced, and a robust and adaptive design procedure can be set up in the detailed engineering stages.

Abstract This study aims to improve the efficiency of distortion base mode selection using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and enhance structural response estimation techniques for digital twin applications in the maritime structures. Real-time determination of loads on a structure is essential for digitalisation in the maritime sector. Methods such as modal superposition and inverse finite element methods have been investigated to calculate loads at arbitrary points from a limited number of sensors. The objective of this study is to estimate loads by using a conversion matrix constructed by distortion base modes. In this study, modes are selected based on the response to regular waves. To achieve this, a distinct algorithm has been developed to select orthogonal modes. This study proposes a novel mode selection method by implementing PCA, which enables obtaining the most representative direction. Wave load case with responses which is most parallel to this direction is determined to be the first mode. To validate our methodology, we estimate hotspot stresses on an FPSO. This method reduces computation time while maintaining high accuracy of estimation. These findings show potential for application to other offshore structures. Further research using actual measurement data is expected to enhance the validity and reliability of these techniques, making a significant contribution to the field of maritime structural analysis and digital twin technology.

In the formulation, the buckling of thin structures subjected to the pressure of viscous flow is modeled, where the geometrically nonlinear equation and the Navier-Stokes equation should be considered. These equations are solved by the strong coupling formulation and the Newton-Raphson method. In order to confirm the validity of this procedure, the arch subjected to only the static pressure of fluid is analyzed. Finally, simple optimization considering fluid-structure interaction is performed using the calculated sensitivity along with the steepest descend method and the satisfactory result is obtained.

Real structures are always subject to uncertainties due to material imperfection, machining tolerance, and assemblage error, etc. These uncertainties lead to variations in structural vibratory responses. In order to reduce the likelihood of unexpected failures in structures, we need to minimize the response variations, which is the underlying idea of robust design. In this paper, we present an inverse sensitivity-based algorithm that allows us to tailor the structural design such that, under the same level of uncertainties, the response variations can be effectively reduced. We first develop a direct relation between the structural uncertainties and the response variations including the means and variances. We then formulate an optimal identification algorithm that will yield design perturbation to minimize the response variances while maintaining the mean values. Case analyses are carried out to validate the validity and efficiency of the new algorithm.

The hydroelastic response is significant from the viewpoint of the structural design of a Mega-Float. Equipping a Mega-Float with some additional structures, such as vertical plates, is one of the ways to reduce the hydroelastic response easily. However, in general, wave drift force acting on the Mega-Float may be increased, when the Mega-Float is equipped with the additional structures to reduce the response. In the present study, we developed a novel additional structure that was effective in the reduction of both hydroelastic response and wave drift force. Furthermore, we estimated the response of Mega-Float equipped with the additional structures, and compared the result with the value measured in at-sea experiments. As a result, we confirmed both the effectiveness of the novel additional structure and the validity of the estimation method.

Resumo:
This paper studies large sample classical and Bayesian inference in a prototypical linear DSGE model and demonstrates that inference on the structural parameters based on a Gaussian likelihood is unaffected by departures from Gaussianity of the structural shocks. This surprising result is due to a cancellation in the asymptotic variance resulting into a generalized information equality for the block corresponding to the structural parameters. The underlying reason for the cancellation is the certainty equivalence property of the linear rational expectation model. The main implication of this result is that classical and Bayesian Gaussian inference achieve a semi-parametric efficiency bound and there is no need for a “sandwich-form” correction of the asymptotic variance of the structural parameters. Consequently, MLE-based confidence intervals and Bayesian credible sets of the deep parameters based on a Gaussian likelihood have correct asymptotic coverage even when the structural shocks are non-Gaussian. On the other hand, inference on the reduced-form parameters characterizing the volatility of the shocks is invalid whenever the structural shocks have a non-Gaussian density and the paper proposes a simple Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm that achieves correct large sample inference for the volatility parameters.

This technical note describes the physical and numerical considerations for developing an idealized numerical wave-structure interaction modeling study using the fully nonlinear, phase-resolving Boussinesq-type wave model, FUNWAVE-TVD (Shi et al. 2012). The focus of the study is on the range of validity of input wave characteristics and the appropriate numerical domain properties when inserting partially submerged, impermeable (i.e., fully reflective) coastal structures in the domain. These structures include typical designs for breakwaters, groins, jetties, dikes, and levees. In addition to presenting general numerical modeling best practices for FUNWAVE-TVD, the influence of nonlinear wave-wave interactions on regular wave propagation in the numerical domain is discussed. The scope of coastal structures considered in this document is restricted to a single partially submerged, impermeable breakwater, but the setup and the results can be extended to other similar structures without a loss of generality. The intended audience for these materials is novice to intermediate users of the FUNWAVE-TVD wave model, specifically those seeking to implement coastal structures in a numerical domain or to investigate basic wave-structure interaction responses in a surrogate model prior to considering a full-fledged 3-D Navier-Stokes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. From this document, users will gain a fundamental understanding of practical modeling guidelines that will flatten the learning curve of the model and enhance the final product of a wave modeling study. Providing coastal planners and engineers with ease of model access and usability guidance will facilitate rapid screening of design alternatives for efficient and effective decision-making under environmental uncertainty.

Adaptation of the questionnaire "Active citizenship of young people" by Polish psychologists Anna Zalewska, Beata Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz was conducted on a sample of 206 people (11 –14 –17 year-old). Evaluation of psychometric properties of Ukrainian version of the questionnaire was conducted, its scales checked for internal consistency and reproducibility. With the help of correlation analysis construct validity was proved, that received almost a complete reproduction of the factor structure of the original.

This document makes an assessment of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA) between Cuba and the European Union (EU) in its four years of validity, and of the evolution of political and economic relations between both parties. The analysis is structured in five headings that address the background, determinants and significance of the PDCA between Cuba and the EU; the main elements discussed in the political dialogue —and in thematic dialogue— between the two parties since 2018, and the central aspects of trade, investment and cooperation relations between Cuba and the EU. The report concludes that, unlike the United States, the EU is able to support the complex process of economic and institutional transformations underway in Cuba, in four fundamental areas: i) technical assistance and advice for the design and implementation of public policies, macroeconomic management, decentralisation and local development; ii) cooperation to fight climate change and transform Cuba’s productive and technological structure; iii) the promotion and encouragement of foreign investment flows from Europe, targeting key productive sectors; and iv) the exploration of financial opportunities for Cuba through the European Investment Bank (EIB) under the current PDCA.
