ABSTRACTObjectives: There is evidence of association between systemic diseases and oral conditions, although it is not clear if these are direct or mediated by underlying factors such as health behaviors. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether self-reported systemic diseases were associated with caries experience. Methods: Medical history data and caries experience (DMFT and DMFS; Decayed, Missing due to caries, Filled Teeth/Surface) were obtained from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine Dental Registry and DNA Repository. Information on 318 subjects (175 females and 143 males) was evaluated. Regression analysis was used to test for association between caries experience and disease status. Results: The stronger associations were found between caries experience and asthma and epilepsy. With respect to asthma, DMFT above 15 (R2 = 0.04) and DMFS above 50 (R2 = 0.02) were associated. After controlling for gender differences in asthma, the associations remained strong (R2 = 0.05 for both DMFT and DMFS). For epilepsy, DMFT above 15 (R2 = 0.18) and DMFS above 50 (R2 = 0.14) were associated. Conclusions: Asthma and epilepsy are associated with higher caries experience. (Eur J Dent 2009;3:297-303)

Aims. There is evidence of association between bruxism and the increasingly common central nervous system stimulants prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) often prescribed for depression or anxiety. However, the evidence is not clear on whether these medications inducing bruxism are directly associated with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). The aim of this work is to evaluate whether these medications are associated with TMD symptoms.Methods. Medical history and participant data were obtained for 469 patients from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Dental Registry and DNA Repository, dating back to 2006. The chi-square test was used to determine any statistically significant associations.Results. There were no statistically significant associations between ADHD stimulant medications or SSRIs and reported TMD symptoms. However, there were significant differences seen between specific brands of medications and reported TMD symptoms. Individuals prescribed methylphenidate (Concerta) were less likely to report temporomandibular joint discomfort (p=0.01). Conversely, individuals prescribed citalopram (Celexa) were more likely to report temporomandibular joint discomfort (p=0.04).Conclusion. Signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction may be influenced by the use of certain medications prescribed for depression or attention deficit hyperactive disorder.

Background. Sleep habits and problems play a vital role in determining sleep quality. We describe sleep habits and problems among medical students and assess their possible effect on self-reported academic performance. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study among medical students at the University of Ghana during the 2014/2015 academic year. Data was collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a self-report questionnaire that assesses sleep quality over a 1-month time interval. Results. 153 medical students were recruited comprising 83 (54.2%) females and 70 (45.8%) males with a mean age of 23.1 ± 2.4 years. The mean duration of night sleep was 5.7 ± 1.2 hours; 88 (57.5%) students had sleep latency of 10-30 minutes while 18 (11.8%) woke up nightly. 23 (15%) students experienced nightmares, 13 (8.5%) snored at night, and only one student reported coffee intake of 2-3 times daily. Sleep quality was poor in 86 (56.2%) and was significantly associated with sleep latency, morning tiredness, daytime sleepiness during lectures, academic performance, living conditions, leisure time, frequency of nocturnal awakenings, waking up due to noise, sleep walking, and nocturnal awakening to use washroom. There was also a significant positive relation between sleep quality and academic performance (X2 = 10.004 p = 0.019). Conclusion. Poor sleep quality and daytime dysfunction are widespread among medical students in Ghana. There was a significant positive relation between sleep quality and self-reported academic performance.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the spread of a new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) on the mental state in school-age children and parents focusing on the aspects of sleep disorders and depression. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 123 parents and 108 school-age children who visited Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong from April 2, 2020 through April 25, 2020, via the direct writing method. Participants were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-7, Center for Epidemiology Scale for Depression. Logistic regressions were used with a level of significance of 5%. The prevalence of GAD, depression, and poor sleep in parents were 34.1%, 17.1% and 44.7%, respectively. The prevalence of GAD in children was 20.4%. Logistic regression showed that stress from Emergency Alert Messages about COVID-19 was associated with GAD and depression in parents. In children, the degree of emotional change after COVID-19 was associated with GAD. This study confirmed that there was a change in the psychological status of children and guardians due to the epidemic of coronavirus disease-2019, and it would be necessary to consider their psychological status during dental treatment.

Objectives: Progressive resorption of the alveolar ridge in the posterior maxilla and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus creates a challenging situation for rehabilitation with endosseous dental implants. Lateral wall sinus augmentation technique has proved to be predictable in gaining vertical bone height by the addition of bone graft under the schneiderian membrane. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is essential for planning this bone augmentation technique to identify any concerns such as the presence of bony septae, sinus pathology, an intraosseous vascular canal, etc. that may contribute to potential complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of intraosseous anastomosis of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA) and infraorbital artery (IOA) in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus in patients of Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry utilizing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: 821 CBCT scans taken at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry Department of Oral Maxillofacial Radiology between January 2009 to December 31, 2015 were analyzed with iCATVisionQ software for the presence of an intraosseous artery in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, the most anterior tooth associated with the canal and the vertical distance from the artery to the floor of the sinus. Age, gender, ethnicity, and dentition status were also evaluated. Of the 821 scans reviewed, 447 patients met the inclusion criteria of the study. The 447 patients were subdivided by gender into 249 females and 199 males, and subdivided by ethnicity into 292 Caucasians, 42 Asians, 24 Hispanics, and 90 African Americans. The data was documented in an excel spreadsheet and analyzed. Results: Based on the 447 scans included in this study, there was an anastomosis of the posterior superior alveolar artery and infraorbital artery in the lateral wall of the sinus in 752 (84%) of the sinuses evaluated. The majority of the detected vascular canals were seen bilaterally. There was also a presence of multiple canals in 155 (17%) sinuses, the majority being two canals. The highest number of canals visualized was four canals in four sinuses. The tooth most associated with the vascular canal was the second premolar. The average distance from the vascular canal to the floor of the sinus was 12mm. Conclusions: Based on the results of this retrospective study, the prevalence of an intraosseous anastomosis in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus is greater than previously reported (30-70%). In some cases, multiple intraosseous vascular canals were identified. With this knowledge, the importance of locating the vascular canals prior to surgery is important to minimize bleeding complications. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) should be a diagnostic tool for surgeries involving the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus.

Dental education is a stressful experience for some students. Dental students have been found to report stress levels higher than in the general population, with 36% of students reporting significant psychological distress. Canadian dental students have reported an increase in anxiety, depression and hostility. No research was found to have investigated dental education stress using a qualitative analytical approach. Objectives: This study aimed to better understand the experience of stress among dentistry students using qualitative methodology. Methods: 12 recent graduates from the McGill University Faculty of Dentistry were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. Themes from the interviews were identified and coded by reading and rereading the texts until information-saturation occurred. Results: Firstly, four sources of stress were identified: workload pressure, fear of failure, faculty relations, and transition stress. Secondly, three effective coping mechanisms were highlighted by the students: seeking support, focusing on things that they can control, and participating in extra-curricular activities. Finally, three types of students with respect to their experience of stress were found: the highly stressed student, the moderately stressed student, and the relaxed student. This typology of dental student is new information that has not been studied before. Conclusion: Faculties need to identify and aid highly stressed students.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Cone beam computerized tomography use is becoming more common in preparation for surgical planning and treatment diagnosis by clinicians. The scanning result gives clinicians a more accurate understanding of each patients’ anatomy, which aids in designing better treatment plan, avoidance of vital anatomy, etc. Modern treatments involving extraction of teeth has become more sophisticated due to advent of dental implant treatment. Along with the procedure, more sophisticated treatment techniques involving manipulation of sinus has flourished. Traditional periapical and panoramic radiograph are not as adapt at identifying sinus pathologies. As patients age, proximity of sinus floor and apex of teeth may become closely related where possibility of one affecting another is observed. This study aims to study the prevalence of odontogenic related pathologies in relation to maxillary sinus in the population who had CBCT images taken at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. The study also looks in detail the relationship of such pathology in relation to teeth status, age, gender, and ethnicity. Methods: 821 CBCT scans completed at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry Department of Oral Maxillofacial Radiology from January 1st, 2009 to July 31, 2013 were evaluated with iCAT computer imaging software. Patients under 18, no posterior dentition, or complete edentulous were excluded from the study. A total of four hundred fourty four (444) CBCT scans were included in the study. Patients with odontogenic related maxillary sinus pathology were selected and teeth status, age, gender and ethnicity recorded. Individual scans had sinus pathology identified and examined for proximity and relationship to respective tooth/teeth. Each individual tooth’s status were also recorded. Chi-square test was conducted to verify validity Results: After reviewing 680 scans, only 444 were included in the study due to exclusions. Scans were subdivided by age (18-35: 77, 36-53: 113, 54-71: 188, 72> : 46), gender (280 male and 164 female), ethnicity (African American 86, Asian 45, Caucasian 291, Hispanic 22), tooth status (caries, 26, crown 87, healthy 31, impacted 11, root canal 88, restoration 58), tooth position ( 3rd molar 9, 2nd molar 86, 1st molar 138, 2nd premolar 20, 1st premolar 6, canine 3). Overall 63.06% of scans were classified as healthy, and 36.04% were classified as presenting odontogenic related maxillary sinus pathology. None of the parameters showed significant predilection to odontogenic related pathology, however, 1st molar has the highest risk of exhibiting pathology in the maxillary sinus with 2nd molar second. The pathology incidence rates are slightly higher in male patients 41% vs 34%. Age is not a significant factor as all age groups demonstrates similar incidence rate except 72> group. Dentition status showed root canal and crown being the most commonly associated with pathology at 29% each. In Caucasian population, crown and root canal was most commonly related. African American was restoration and healthy teeth. Asian population had the most link with large restorations. Conclusions: Maxillary 1st molar is the most commonly involved tooth with maxillary sinus pathologies with 2nd molar as second most common. Caucasian individuals had the most odontogenic related pathologies. In general, crown and root canal are associated with a significant number of pathologies found in the sinus and should be evaluated prior to any surgical evaluation prior to any sinus manipulative surgery or odontogenic treatment.

Objectives: There is increasing research regarding pathology of the maxillary sinus in dentistry. This may be attributed to the increasing routine use of cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) for diagnosis and treatment planning of complex dental treatments, and incidental findings identified by clinicians during the process. This study aims to compare two different CBCT viewing software programs, and evaluate their detection of pathological findings in the maxillary sinus of a group of patients at Temple University School of Dentistry. Methods: A total of 316 CBCT scans taken on 176 females and 140 males (202 Caucasian, 69 African-American, 30 Asian, and 15 Hispanic) between 2009 and mid- 2013 by the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology at Temple University School of Dentistry were evaluated using i-CAT and INFINITT viewing software programs. The CBCT scans were examined with both viewing programs, and classified each time by independent evaluators as yielding one of 5 categories of maxillary sinus pathology as follows: healthy status with mucosal thickening ≤ 3 millimeters, mucosal thickening > 3 millimeters, polypoidal mucosal thickening, partial opacification, or complete opacification. Results: The i-CAT viewing program revealed 193 (61.1%) scans with a healthy maxillary sinus presenting with mucosal thickening ≤ 3 millimeters, and 123 (38.9%) scans yielding various forms of maxillary sinus pathology. In comparison, the INFINITT viewing program found 194 (61.4%) scans with healthy maxillary sinus conditions without pathology, and 122 (38.6%) scans with various types of maxillary sinus pathology. The difference in detection of maxillary sinus pathology between the i-CAT and INFINITT viewing programs was not statistically significant. Conclusions: The i-CAT and INFINITT viewing software programs for evaluation of human CBCT scans used in dental treatment planning provided nearly identical information relative to detection of maxillary sinus pathology. This suggests that both viewing programs may be employed interchangeably by clinicians in their pre- treatment evaluation of the maxillary sinus in dental patients.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of oral implant treatment provided at the School of Dentistry, University of Otago from 1989 to 2005. Methods: Oral implant patients (n=320) with 586 implants were identified and invited to attend for a clinical examination. Implant demographics of all the patients were extracted from the files. Implant demographics of the examined and unexamined patients were compared to assess if the examined patients were representative of the total group. One hundred and three patients with 214 implants agreed to attend for an examination. In the clinical examination full mouth plaque scores, probing depths, bleeding on probing and suppuration were measured. In addition, around implants recession and width of keratinized gingiva were also recorded. For the radiographic examination, baseline radiographs and radiographs taken at the time of examination were digitized and compared to measure the amount of bone lost or gained around implants using NIH Image J software. Results: There were equal numbers of males and females with a mean age of 46.3 15 years at the time of implant placement. The smoking history at the time of examination was recorded, 56% of the patients were non-smokers, 37% former smokers, and 7% were current smokers. More than half of the implants (56%) were placed in the anterior region. Based on the type of implant system, 79% were Branemark implants, 10% Straumann, 6% Southern implants and 4% were unknown. Most of the patients (64%) had implant-supported crowns, 19% had fixed denture prostheses, and 17% had implant-supported overdentures. The overall implant survival rate was 97.7% with five implants lost (2.3%) and 8 implants treated for peri-implantitis (3.8%). The mean PD around implants was 2.3mm (SD 0.6mm), mean recession was 0.5mm (SD 0.8mm) and mean attachment level of 2.8mm (SD 0.9mm). Probing depths [greater than or equal to] 4mm with BOP were recorded around implants in 8.9% of patients. The mean full mouth plaque score was 30% while mean plaque score around implants was 15.9%. The average bone loss around implants was 0.3mm (SD 0.8). Maximum bone loss observed was 2.9 mm. Conclusion: The prevalence of peri-implant inflammation and implant survival rates in this group of patients appeared comparable to that reported in the literature. The prevalence of peri-implant lesions was low in the group of patients examined.

Students in diverse health programs taught separately from each other with a focus on profession ‘specific’ content rather than comprehensive collaborative patient care promotes a limited understanding of and respect for the collaborative role of different health professionals when undertaking treatment planning and patient-centred care. This may result in oral health graduates educated within a uniprofessional context becoming ill-prepared to manage patients with complex conditions that require collaboration with different oral health professionals (OHPs) through a team-based patient-centred approach. As the potential value of interprofessional education (IPE) is strongly advocated in the literature, the Griffith University School of Dentistry and Oral Health (DOH) introduced the interprofessional teams-based treatment planning (TBTP) process in 2009 to address these educational challenges and facilitate IPE. The TBTP process incorporated student practice teams and an expansion of peer learning through collaboration between students enrolled in three different oral health programs, namely dentistry, dental technology and oral health therapy. It was perceived that shared learning, understanding of complementary knowledge, collaborative participation in managing patient care, and having knowledge/respect for each professions’ role were all necessary to improve communication and teamwork skills in a pre-qualification context in readiness for collaborative oral health practice. However, a systematic evaluation of the TBTP process, its contribution to student clinical learning and experiences, and whether those experiences contributed to advancing interprofessional competencies and capabilities at DOH has not been conducted since its commencement. This thesis documents an evaluation that researched the attitudes, perceptions and experiences of students, clinical teaching staff, patients and newly graduated OHPs involved with the TBTP process at DOH between 2012 and 2015. The evaluation framework proposed in this research uses the first three levels of Kirkpatrick’s expanded typology of learner outcomes for educational interventions as a feedback process. The levels include student reaction to the learning experience such as a change in attitude towards interprofessional practice, acquisition of knowledge/skills which incorporates collaborative oral health learning experiences and behavioural change. This study employed a mixed methodology, primarily quantitative supplemented by a qualitative approach where data were collected prospectively and annually at similar points in time between 2012 and mid-2015. The first phase of this study developed, and pilot tested instruments to collect relevant information from the cohorts included in the study and conducted a psychometric evaluation of the student survey to establish its validity and reliability. The second phase prospectively collected data utilising instruments specific for each of these cohorts. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of collected data and an interpretation of the results were then employed to answer the research question: ‘What is the impact of interprofessional student team-based processes, based on best practice principles, on attitudes, perceptions and experiences of students, clinical teaching staff, patients and newly graduated OHPs affiliated with DOH?’ A triangulation of data determined the amount of convergence in the study results thereby enhancing confidence in the findings and the research methodology as being well developed, comprehensive and robust. The results suggest that students had positive attitudes towards shared learning as indicated by their willingness to share information about patients with students in other oral health programs and engage in collaborative discussions to arrive at mutually agreed decisions about treatment plans within a team environment. The TBTP process was identified as a supportive environment where interprofessional clinical learning and experience was gained. It was perceived that effective supervision in this context facilitated collaborative treatment planning and teamwork skills, positive opinions of other OHPs, enhanced communication with colleagues and an improved understanding of clinical problems where students engaged in patient-centred collaborative care. New graduates noted that their behaviour became more respectful towards other OHPs as indicated through improved communication and by effectively contributing as part of a patient’s interprofessional team-based care. Interprofessional shared learning alone had a large predictive effect and correlated strongly and significantly with students’ interprofessional clinical learning and experiences. The effect that chance, selection bias, measurement bias and confounding may have had on findings were considered and outcomes attributed to students were found to possess internal validity. Findings from clinical teaching staff were deemed valid and reliable within DOH, and information collected from other cohorts was considered innovative and provided meaning to help answer the research question. Through the TBTP process students acquired several interprofessional competencies and capabilities that included an understanding of roles and interprofessional values; interprofessional communication including collaborative decision-making and an ability to recognise and resolve conflict, and teamwork abilities relevant towards providing team-based patient-centred care. This research provides valuable information for accrediting authorities and oral health educational providers seeking to incorporate interprofessional team-based clinical oral health education within their curricula to improve program outcomes. Strategies to guide a more efficient and effective interprofessional model of clinical oral health education at DOH have been proposed in this thesis. Recommendations have also been made for further research opportunities, both nationally and internationally, to improve an understanding of the educational needs of oral health students and graduates to better equip educational facilities to expedite students’ interprofessional clinical learning and experience reflective of best practice clinical oral health education.

Objectives: With increasing utilization of cone beam computed tomography for diagnosis and treatment planning of complex dentomaxillofacial rehabilitation, more incidental findings of pathology in the maxillary sinus have been identified by clinicians. Part one of this article discusses the association between age, gender, ethnicity and dentition status in relation to prevalence of sinus pathology. The aim of this study is to expand the current knowledge base in regards to the prevalence of maxillary sinus pathologies in patients of Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry and to determine if smoking and allergies have relationship with the prevalence of pathology. Materials and Methods: : Three hundred and sixty-three cone beam computed tomography scans taken were evaluated at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology between 2009 to July 31, 2013. Scans were classified into 1 of 5 categories based upon the type of sinus pathology detected. The categories of sinus findings were: healthy, mucosal thickening > 3-4 mm, polypoidal mucosal thickening, partial opacification and complete opacification. Medical health questionnaires were reviewed for patient's social history such as smoking and systemic factors such as allergies. Chi-square statistical analysis using SAS was done to examine the relationship. Results: This study included a total of 363 subjects subdivided by gender into 203 females and 160 males. The subjects were further subdivided by ethnicity into 217 Caucasians, 86 African Americans, 35 Asians, and 25 Hispanics. Also, 129 of the subjects had a history of smoking, 98 had seasonal allergies, and 50 had environmental allergies. In addition 129 of the subjects had at least 1 type of sinus pathology. Chi-square analyses showed that there was no relationship between the prevalence of sinus pathology and allergy or smoking status. History of allergies was marginally higher in females and significantly higher in African Americans (p=0.007). History of smoking was higher in older subjects (p=0.0004), males (p=0.01) and Caucasians (p<0.0001). Conclusions: This CBCT cross sectional study shows that there is no statistically significant correlation between prevalence of sinus pathology and smoking or allergy status. Further cohort studies are needed to determine if smoking or allergies may or may not contribute to sinus pathology.

The shortage of clinical patients utilizing the services provided at dental schooI clinics is a concern shared by many institutions. In an effort to help increase the patient pool at BostOn University Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry, dental screening programs were begun in 1983, which focused at targeting the college student population as prospective clinical patients. The following study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the screening programs, conducted during the fall of 1986, in recruiting dental patients for the school and ascertain specific reasons which expediate or preclude college students from utilizing the dental services at Boston University. The results of the study demonstrate the moderate success of the screening programs and indicate the need for continued efforts in improving the visibility and organization of the screening sessions at the college institutions participating in the Dental Screening Programs.

Tutorial attention is one of the most valuable tools to reduce school dropout, through tutoring, it is possible to investigate the causes that lead the student to make the decision to drop out and propose solutions to various problems to support the student. Since 2015, the UAC School of Dentistry implemented changes in the tutoring program, and in order to know its effect on dropout, a retrospective cohort study was carried out, in which generations of the PE of Dental Surgeon of the Autonomous University of Campeche (UACAM) during the period 2016-2020, the dropout rates per semester were determined, and it was related to the tutorial activity during the study period, risk measures were also calculated related to sex, age and place of origin. It was found that tutorial attention is a protection factor against dropout, students who are attended have a 72% lower risk of dropping out than those who are not. Factors such as being male or female, age, and origin was not a risk factor for desertion in this population. We conclude that the strategies of the tutorial action plan have positive effects to prevent the dropout of students from the UACAM Dental Surgeon program

Poor sleep quality is common among medical students, it has been attributed to high demand of medicine careers; meanwhile sleep insufficiency has been associated with lower academic performance. Nevertheless, still not fully understood the processes that underlie such effect, like the alteration of executive functions that could occur due to sleep insufficiency. In this study, were assessed the sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and executive functions using the WisconPC program, in 38 first-semester medical students, the instruments were applied at the beginning and at the end of school cycle and correlations were estimated. The results of PSQI evidenced a sleep quality worsened towards the end of the semester (start: 8.31±3.41, end: 10.92±1.81), a reduction in the average of sleep hours from 6 to 2.4 at the beginning and end of the semester respectively; however, overall score revealed low sleep quality since the initial evaluation in most of participants. On the other hand, we did not find significant changes in the components of the executive functions; except the correlation between the average reaction time per response and the average reaction time of hits, which indicates the development of cognitive flexibility at the end of semester. No correlation was found between sleep quality and executive functions, further studies are needed to understand the functional relations between sleep and cognitive processes, also to explain the mechanisms underlying the academic performance impairment, attributed to poor sleep. Besides, it is needed to research the etiology of the poor sleep quality that students inform from the beginning as university students, to implement interventions to improve the overall quality of life of medical students, that is reflected in their academic performance.

Domestic violence is a complex problem that affects people of all ages, races, creeds and social classes, generating several complications for women. Many of the traumas resulting from violence are orofacial, causing physical and functional changes, as well as aesthetic impacts that can aggravate chronic problems, such as depression. This significantly affects the quality of life and social interaction of victims, as psychological complications negatively influence the perception of oral health. This study aims to report the humanized oral rehabilitation of a patient who is a victim of domestic violence, correlate rehabilitation treatment with self-esteem and quality of life, and encourage the interruption of domestic violence. The treatment was carried out at the Integrated Clinic III and IV of the School of Dentistry of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), following a plan that involved several areas of Dentistry and with the patient's consent. The patient received guidance on oral hygiene and underwent procedures such as scaling, prophylaxis, extractions, endodontic treatments, composite resin restorations, intraradicular retainers, total acrylic resin crowns, and temporary upper partial dentures (PRP). It was concluded that oral rehabilitation significantly increased the patient's self-esteem and quality of life, encouraging her to complete the treatment with crowns and definitive PRPs, in addition to contributing to the interruption of cycles of domestic violence.

Limited research demonstrates the possible correlations between dental diseases and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Nevertheless, dental diseases are often overlooked while assessing the risk of AD and PD in clinical settings. It is unknown whether AD/PD risk can be predicted using electronic dental record (EDR) data collected in a routine dental setting. This pilot study determined the feasibility of predicting AD/PD using 84 features routinely captured in the EDR. We utilized the Temple University School of Dentistry clinic data of 27,138 patients. Using a natural language processing (NLP) approach (accuracy=97%), we identified patients with AD/PD and their matched controls (matched by age and gender). XGBoost machine learning model with 10-fold cross-validation was applied for prediction. With 77% accuracy, we found 53 features significantly associated with AD/PD that could be utilized to predict the risk of AD/PD. Further studies are warned to confirm these findings.

The occurrence of adverse events (AE) in healthcare represents a severe problem for the quality of care, due to unsafe or poor quality of healthcare service. Similar to many other healthcare environments, Dentistry entails inherent patient safety risks. Research on patient safety has been developed over the last decades, however, it is important to consider AE to improve patient safety in this care environment, as adequate reporting systems for this area of intervention are not known. Thus, the main aim of this study was to carry out a literature review to investigate AE exclusively related to dental care, and associated with the types of procedures that dentists perform and the tools used. Results will guide future studies, particularly related to their notification, as a way of promoting patient safety. The PubMed, Scopus and SciELO databases were used and the following keywords searched: “patient safety”, “adverse events”, “dental care”, “dental services” and “dentistry”, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Observational studies, published in the last 10 years, were considered. Review studies, case reports and clinical trials were excluded. 56 articles were identified. The most common AE in dental care settings were: infections, delayed or failed diagnosis, allergies, errors in diagnosis and examination, errors in treatment planning or procedure, and accidental ingestion or inhalation of foreign objects, among others. Improving the knowledge on AE is important to encourage reporting, control and seek for tools that help manage care, and to promote improvements in care and patient safety. To conclude, the identification and recognition of AE, specific to this field of medical practice, is only the first step towards improving patient safety in dental care, through the development of specific notification systems. In future works, we intend to develop and validate an AE notification system adapted to the specificities of the dental field, using the clinical school of Dentistry at the University of Rio Verde as a study site.

Beginning in 1976 the University of Pittsburgh (UoP), initially through its Department of Surgery and later including the Swanson School of Engineering and McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, has been actively engaged in the design and clinical utilization of cardiopulmonary assist devices for adult and pediatric patients. In launching these initiatives, the focus was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) applied primarily to infants with respiratory distress, congenital and/or acquired cardiac disease. A leader in these early days of ECMO was Professor Robert Eberhart, who not only detailed the underlying bio-transport principles or oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange in ECMO devices, but who also participated in the early clinical utilization of ECMO. Professor Eberhart presented his path-finding results on an annual basis at the national meetings of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) with publication in Transactions ASAIO [1–3].

Pennsylvania has a long history of coal mining. Unfortunately, it has left many scars. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) is looking at the potential of using micro hydro turbines in acid mine drainage streams. They hope to make it profitable for business to "clean-up" the streams by providing seed money to initiate the hydro turbine projects. It is believed that businesses can profit from both the energy created by the turbines and the extraction of the acid mine drainage (AMD) minerals. The minerals and concentrations vary with each stream. Some possess precious metals, others contain minerals that are used in paint pigment, and still others are being researched for use in powder metallurgy. The paper outlines an undergraduate research project done at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. The study is to create a comprehensive diagnostic spreadsheet to be used by the PA DEP to determine viable economical turbines based on waterway conditions. The study has parallel phases: one addressing issues related to turbine parameters and a second dealing with waterway variables. Also to be discussed in the paper is the use of the project as an undergraduate research study for technology students. For students interested in research or graduate school, it is immensely important to introduce them to research. By guiding them through the process they are better prepared for their future.

This paper describes the model used by the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology (RST) at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to teach the fundamentals of design using the development of assistive technology as the design objective. Our program, Technology Innovations for People with Disabilities (TIPeD), creates an ecosystem around design through the conceptualization, development, and commercialization of products. Through two classes, a fabrication lab (FabLab), and programs for both traditional (undergraduate and graduate students) and non-traditional (teachers and veterans) trainees, we facilitate experiential learning activities to convey design and product innovation principles. Undergraduate and graduate students progress through formal learning activities to be able to serve as mentors for our non-traditional trainees who are preparing for one of two pathways. Military veterans in our Experiential Learning for Veterans in Assistive Technology and Engineering (ELeVATE) program use our design and product innovation activities as a mechanism to get excited about and prepare for a transition in to formal education in engineering and technology. Teachers in our Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program use our activities as a mechanism to learn about engineering and design to create high school science and math curricular units to excite their students about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Though the purpose of this paper is to present and describe this program model, we chose to include both formative and summative evaluation procedures, in addition to preliminary results, to help demonstrate our efforts for continuous improvement of the program.

Introduction: Sleep is a physiological state that occurs cyclically in many living beings, analyzing rest and activity behaviors, which make up a wake-sleep cycle. At the university, medical students are faced with a lack of time and exhaustion, since the course has a full workload, a fact that causes students to leave basic activities more and more towards the end of the day, thus developing disorders of the sleep. Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the quality of sleep and the incidence of sleep disorder in medical students. Design and setting: The research was carried out with students from a medical school in the south of Minas Gerais. Methods: The Google Forms platform was used by students to answer two self-administered questionnaires. The first encompassed questions about gender and year of graduation and the second assessed sleep quality and is called the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The Bioestat 5 and Excel 365 were used for statistical analysis. Results: The analysis of the PSQI results showed sleep disturbance in 20.5% of the students, presence of poor sleep quality in 47.2% of the students, 40.2% of students had poor or very poor subjective quality of sleep. Conclusion: Through this research, it was observed that the sleep quality of medical students is lower than that of the general population, being related to the progression of the course. It was concluded that the students in this study also have, on average, fewer hours of sleep than the rest of Brazilians.

Students in dental education are increasingly becoming technologically advanced, perhaps more than their teachers. Their communication is progressively becoming reliant on technology rather than a person to person path. They are also more reliant on educational web based resources to support their learning. Advances or development in interactive web based educational tools (IWET) will meet their expectations and allow for an on demand flexible delivery of educational material that supports their learning and allows vertical and horizontal integration within the syllabus. IWET have the added benefit of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and development of psychomotor skills. Interactive web based tools in dentistry are as valuable as other methods of traditional teaching. However, they should not replace the pedagogy but be complementary to it. Periodontology is the clinical, dental specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis and management of plaque bacteria-mediated inflammation in the supporting tissues around teeth. The complete removal of plaque-retaining calculus/tartar from all tooth surfaces is a crucial part of successful treatment. This calculus removal, be it above the gum margin (supragingival), or below the gum margin (subgingival), requires a psychomotor skill that may take years of practice to attain, particularly for subgingival calculus, where its removal relies on tactile sensation, and in effect is a blind procedure. This also requires the knowledge of and the use of various types of instruments, depending on the location in the mouth and whether the calculus is supragingival or subgingival. The initial stage of development of the skill requires repeated practice on clinical mannequins/simulators. Research collaboration between the Dental School and Hospital Cork and the Department of Computer Science at University College Cork saw the development of an interactive web-based educational tool and a phone application. The methodology employed in the development of these educational tools include a video recording of the clinical procedures for full mouth scaling with a visual narrative describing various seating positions of the dental clinician, instrument selection and application and a synchronized verbal description of the steps undertaken when engaging in a periodontal scaling procedure. These educational tools have been developed and will be made available for students to use during their practice on mannequins/simulators. DentLearn is a repository of interactive e-learning materials which can be populated dynamically with new content. The core of the e-learning tool is an e-learning content player that can display the video and the slides associated with a procedure in a synchronized manner. The player uses some recent Smile-based technologies that make the synchronization possible as well as it enhances the player controls with more visual elements. Furthermore, the player can swap between video and slides slides in the central panel for displaying the e-learning content. The repository contains at present only e-learning materials related with Periodontics teaching. However, it has some user friendly functions that allow for new content to be added to it. A scale down version of the repository was made available for mobile devices. A future aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the interactive web-based tool and phone application as an educational support for dental students. Further plan is to apply this e-learning to other dental specialties in addition to the development of animation and simulation models that are virtually pressure sensitive, interactive and responsive.
