The whole of the geological collection had, unbeknown to Sarjeant, been transferred to the Department of Geology, University of Leicester in 1959. Initially this transfer was a rather vague 'loan', but it was formalized as a gift in 1966. Some of BCB's comments recorded in this article refer to a Mr C. Objective: To evaluate the role of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) in the regulation of smooth muscle tone in normal and varicose human saphenous veins. Design: An in vitro study of site-matched saphenous vein samples from patients undergoing varicose vein surgery or carotid endarterectomy. Setting: Department of Surgery, University of Leicester, Leicester Royal Infirmary. Patients: Nine patients undergoing varicose vein surgery and seven patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. Measurements: Vein samples were contracted with noradrenaline and relaxation studies performed with acetylcholine (endothelium-dependent) and sodium nitroprusside (endothelium-independent). Results: There was no statistical difference in either smooth muscle contraction in response to noradrenaline or in endothelial-dependent relaxation in response to acetylcholine. All veins retained the ability to relax in response to nitroprusside. Conclusions: No evidence of a defect in either smooth muscle function or EDRF release has been found that may contribute to the aetiology of varicose veins.

The future famous geneticist Prof. Yuri Dubrova (1955–2023) was born in Kyiv (Ukraine), where he received excellent secondary and higher education and was awarded with a gold medal upon graduating from school. Eventually, he became one of the best graduates of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology at the Faculty of Biology of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. His interests included theoretical biology, evolutionary theory, genetics, biometrics, and bionics (for some time he studied the lateral lineage of cyprinid fishes). In his last years at the university, he focused on the study of spontaneous mutations. At the Vavilov Institute of General Genetics in Moscow, Y. Dubrova continued his post-graduate studies and successfully defended his PhD thesis. After the collapse of the USSR, he moved to the UK in search of better scientific and technical opportunities, where he became a professor at the University of Leicester. The scientist lived and worked in Leicester until the end of his life. He devoted himself fully to science, especially to radiation, medical and population genetics, and to teaching, and tried to participate in the study of highly complex medical and genetic issues related, in particular, to the consequences of man-made disasters—Chornobyl (Ukraine, Belarus), Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan)—and other cases of large-scale radiation effects on life. Dr. Dubrova is the author and co-author of more than 150 scientific articles published in leading journals, including the American Journal of Human Genetics, International Journal of Radiation Biology, Radiation Research, Molecular Biology and Evolution, International Journal of Cancer, British Journal of Cancer, Science, and Nature. He co-operated with many of the world’s leading geneticists and gave lectures in Ukraine, Russia, the USA, Canada, Japan, etc. The article uses fragments of the author’s long correspondence with Y. Dubrova, which may be of interest to biographers of F. Dobrzhansky, M. Tymofeiev-Resovsky, O. Sozinov, O. Yablokov, O. Kistiakowsky, as well as to students, teachers, and historians of Kyiv National University, Kaniv Nature Reserve, and the University of Leicester.

Psychology classes were first taught at Rajshahi University in 1956. In 1965, the University of Dhaka established the Department of Psychology. The Department of Psychology at Jagannath University offered an MSc programme in Psychology within the Faculty of Science in 1986. Chittagong University’s Department of Psychology was founded in 2005 as part of the Biological Sciences Faculty. During the 1993–94 academic years, the University of Dhaka began a postgraduate professional training program in conjunction with the University of London as part of the link initiative. In 1995, the MS in Clinical Psychology program began. Since 1997, Dhaka University has had a separate Department of Clinical Psychology within the Faculty of Biological Sciences, which offers clinical psychology masters and training program as well as produces professional clinical psychologists. In 2012, the Department of Psychology at Jagannath University introduced one-year master’s degrees in psychology in three areas: clinical and counseling psychology; industrial and organizational psychology; and educational and developmental psychology. In 2015, Rajshahi University created a new Clinical Psychology Department inside the Faculty of Life and Earth Science. The Department of Clinical Psychology provides a fouryear BSc Honors degree in Clinical Psychology and a one-year Master’s program in Clinical Psychology. The availability of applied psychologist placement chances in Bangladesh is still limited, indicating that there is a great need for and numerous opportunities to work as a professional psychologist in various fields in Bangladesh.

Abstract. Robin Charles (Ignatius) Whatley was born a ‘Man of Kent’ in 1936. He was educated at Ashford Grammar School, where an inspiring teacher, Frank Kenworthy, stimulated a series of pupils to become earth scientists, for example, John Catt (University College London), Roy Clements (Leicester University), Ron Cook (recently Vice Chancellor of York University) and Chris Wilson (Open University). Following a varied post-school career as a farmer (1954), National Serviceman (1955–1957), and inshore fisherman based at Christchurch, Hampshire (1957–1959), Robin joined Hull University to read Geology. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in 1962, one of the first two ever to be awarded by the department. An interest in Micropalaeontology, in particular ostracods, became apparent during undergraduate years and formed part of his BSc dissertation. A further three years at Hull followed, funded by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR, fore-runner of the modern research councils), leading to the award of a PhD degree in 1966 for a thesis on British Callovian and Oxfordian ostracods, carried out under the supervision of John Neale. As a mature student Robin felt it to be his duty to write stern letters to DSIR pointing out the shortcomings of its procedures and officials, and he was somewhat surprised when, visiting DSIR for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship interview, he discovered that his letters were regularly pinned to the staff notice board to be read by all. As it turned out a Fellowship was not required, as Robin was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Geology . . .

Abstract After a half century of use by the Brown University Psychology Department, the Walter S. Hunter Laboratory of Psychology has been scheduled for renovation for another use, and a new building for the department is on the drawing board. Hunter Lab was specifically designed to house an experimental psychology department. Here we comment on the changes and adaptations necessary over the years as teaching and laboratory technology changed and as the department and the university grew larger, and we suggest considerations to others who are planning new or renovated buildings with similar purposes.

Walter Spear was a multi-talented individual who decided to make a career in science in the UK. After his studies in London he joined the academic staff of the Physics Department in Leicester in 1953. In 1968 he was appointed to the Harris Chair of Physics at the University of Dundee in Scotland, where he stayed until retirement. Although his work was primarily driven by a desire to understand the basic physics of electrical conduction in solids, his discoveries had considerable impact on the electronics industry. For example, he will be well remembered for his research on amorphous semiconductors, which resulted in a variety of applications within the optoelectronics industry, including solar cells and the liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used in televisions, computer monitors and a wide range of hand-held devices. His work was characterized throughout by high experimental skill, felicitous choice of materials and full theoretical understanding. Walter won many international prizes during his career, including the Royal Society Rumford Medal in 1990.

Harry Smith was a botanist with a driving passion to understand how plant growth, development and responses to the environment are regulated. He was a true experimentalist with a restless mind, a determination to question and the commitment to follow through. Harry valued achievement over background, and his research combined biochemical, molecular and physiological approaches aimed at understanding the behaviour of plants in the real world. This led him to a series of classical experiments, begun at the University of Nottingham and continued at the University of Leicester, studying how plants detect proximity and shading by other plants. This work transformed our understanding of the role of the red/far-red light-absorbing phytochrome pigments in the perception of and response to vegetative shading. Harry defined the mechanism of the shade avoidance syndrome, and this work, taught to students worldwide, is of fundamental importance in understanding plant behaviour in the natural environment and agriculture. Harry was a truly inspirational teacher, research leader and head of department, and also a visionary founder and editor of successful journals such as Plant, Cell and Environment , Molecular Ecology and Global Change Biology , as well as being a veteran gardener, tree planter, artist and car lover.

The article examines the research work of the first Russian psychological science department of social psychology, established at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University in 1968, celebrating its 55th anniversary. Thanks to the intellectual and time resources of the Department's staff and faculty, a tremendous breakthrough has been made — from the first attempts to define the subject and methods of social psychology, to contemporary large-scale research involving a variety of scientific fields. One of the main problems of the department remains such phenomena as social capital of personality and organization, trust in organization, proactive work and career design, subjective well-being of employees in organization and many others. In this article we summarize the experience of numerous studies, present the scientific results and outline the prospects for further research and development of the Department of Social Psychology at St. Petersburg State University.

The ideas of human integrity and continuity of development are laid by him in the basis of the scientific study of individuality. For the purposes of such a study, it is necessary to combine the efforts of developmental psychology and differential psychology and the use of methods of complex study. Initially, this direction was formed within the Department of General Psychology, empirical research was carried out by employees of the Laboratory of Differential Psychology and Anthropology of NIIKSI, starting in 1963. The Department of Developmental Psychology and Differential Psychology was opened in 1998. The department's research covers all periods of human development, starting from prenatal, and ending with the period of late adulthood and aging. Former and current employees of the department conducted large-scale studies of the intellectual potential of adolescents living in different environmental conditions. The conditions, factors and mechanisms of self-realization of personality in adolescence, adolescence and adulthood were studied. A comprehensive study of the stressors of everyday life and coping mechanisms at different stages of adulthood has been conducted. The parameters of psychoemotional well-being of adolescents and adults were studied from the standpoint of an integrative approach. Studies of the impact of pandemic-related stress on pregnant women and child development and many other projects have been conducted. The history of the department is represented by four generations of researchers, starting from the direct students of B.G. Ananyev, M.D. Alexandrova, E.F. Rybalko, N.A. Grishchenko-Rose and ending with the students of their students.

All of the behaviors that people exhibit in order to stay healthy both physically and psychologically and maintain their health during their lifetime are included in the definition of "healthy life behavior". In this study, it was aimed to identify and compare the perceptions of healthy life behavior of students of the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences and Psychology Department Students who study at the University of Health Sciences. A total of 199 students, 97 students from the sports science department (age: 19.84 ± 1.801, weight: 65.30 ± 12.460), and 102 students from the psychology department (age: 20.12 ± 1.916 weight: 60.17 ± 9.881) participated in the study. There was a statistically significant difference between the scale total scores of the participants and the dimensions of health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, stress management, and the measurements of the students of sports science students and students of psychology sciences in terms of an increase in sport sciences students (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the participants' interpersonal communication and spiritual development scores, which are the sub-dimensions of the scale (p˃0.05). University education is an education period in which students can decide independently. These results showed that sports students and psychology sciences students' different undergraduate education also affected their healthy lifestyle behaviors. In this context, it is concluded that directing students of other departments of the university to exercise and sports activities will contribute to their perceptions of healthy lifestyle.

Abstract. We provide a short overview of the research in Behavioural Cardiology at the Department of Psychology at the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz focussing on two lines of research: Studies of psychosocial variables that might enhance or attenuate cardiovascular risk in healthy individuals and studies of psychosocial variables and health behaviours that might impact the health status of patients listed for heart transplantation. Our studies so far suggest that psychosocial factors like anxiety and repressive coping impact information processing and cardiovascular responses to stress. Moreover, we examine the impact of health-protective resource variables including self-efficacy and physical activity on psychological and physiological functioning in everyday life. Our studies of patients newly listed for heart transplantation document high levels of depression, the relevance of ischaemic aetiology regarding negative emotions and lacking support, and difficulties with smoking cessation and fluid restriction. Future analyses will show if these characteristics independently contribute to adverse pre-transplantation outcomes.

The article highlights the main milestones in the history of the Department of Psychology and Pedagogy, formed at the first institute of out-of-school education in Russia, which even today trains cadres of cultural figures for Russia and other countries. The author, who has headed this department for almost 30 years, shares her memories, thoughts about the role of the department of pedagogy and psychology in the training of humanitarian specialists, about those who worked at the department, whose research, initiatives, communication style shaped the traditions of the department, influenced numerous graduates. The article shows that the outstanding psychologists and teachers A. G. Kovalev, E. A. Korsunsky, I. F. Goncharov, V. L. Drankov laid the foundation for scientific research problems, continued by colleagues not only in this, but also in other departments. The author notes the importance of general scientific disciplines for the professional training of humanities, drawing attention to the importance for the teachers of these departments of development and courses of the professional cycle in the case when the department becomes a graduating one. At present, the need for a psychological and pedagogical component of the educational process seems to be particularly relevant. It is in the classes in psychology and pedagogy that students gain knowledge about the formation of personality, the problems of growing up, the nature of talent and the perception of art, building a family and education of patriots. It is noted that the experience of the department for 90 years shows the positive and negative aspects of domestic education, which are instructive for modern teachers.

The article is devoted to the 145th anniversary of the outstanding philosopher of the 20th century S. L. Frank (28.01.1877–10.12.1950), who preserving the pre–revolutionary traditions of teaching psychology as part of philosophy at the historical and philological faculties of Russian universities, in 1918 for the first time in Saratov began teaching psychology at Saratov University, thus becoming the founder of the regional psychological school. An apologist for philosophical (idealistic) psychology, Frank invited Professor A. A. Krogius (1919), an experimental psychologist known in Europe, to work at the Saratov Department of Philosophy, thereby creating conditions for a versatile psychological education. In the spring of 1919, through Frank’s efforts a philosophical department was opened at Saratov University, which began professional university training of psychologists for the first time in the region. In the autumn of 1919, with Frank’s participation, Saratov psychology was institutionalized for the first time – the Department of Philosophy and Psychology appeared at the university. After Frank’s expulsion from Russia in 1922, his name and works as alien to the Marxist worldview in his homeland began to be hushed up. His merit to Saratov psychology was also consigned to oblivion for a long time. This work was carried out in order to express grateful memory to the founder of the Saratov University Psychological School.

The history of origin and development of the first Russian psychological laboratory of social psychology opened at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) State University in September 1962 at the Philosophy Department (under the Psychology Department) headed by E.S. Kuzmin is considered. The first tasks of the laboratory were to develop methods for socio-psychological research and to master them in order to study relationships in labor collectives. The research topic began to expand in 1965 when the Research Institute for Complex Social Research (NIIKSI) was created at Leningrad State University and the laboratory was fully integrated into it. Its staff became involved in scientific and practical work on social planning, the basic idea of which was to regulate the life of work collectives on a scientific basis, based on the objectives of Soviet society. Relevant developments from the laboratory were exhibited at the All-Union Exhibition of Achievements of the USSR in 1969 and 1970. Many of the scientific findings were included in the staff’s PhD theses. In order to increase the efficiency of its management, NIIKSI’s leadership introduced a full-time position of Head of Laboratory. A new stage of its activity began.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the everyday practices of academic work in social science to understand better academics’ learning. It also asks how academic work is enacted in relation to the discipline, department and university, taking temporality as its starting point. Design/methodology/approach The study sought to trace academic activities in practice. Within three universities, 14 academics were work-shadowed; social, material, technological, pedagogic and symbolic actors were observed and where possible connections and interactions were traced (including beyond the institution). This paper reports on a subset of the study: the academic practices of four early-career academics in one discipline are analysed. Findings Email emerges as a core academic practice and an important pedagogic actor for early career academics in relation to the department and university. Much academic work is “work about the work”, both in and outside official work time. Other pedagogic actors include conferences, networks and external Web identities. Disciplinary work happens outside official work time for the most part and requires time to be available. Disciplinary learning is therefore only afforded to some, resulting in structural disadvantage. Originality/value By tracing non-human and human actors, it has emerged that the department and university, rather than the discipline, are most important in composing everyday work practices. A sociomaterial approach enables researchers to better understand the “black box” of everyday academic practice. Such an approach holds the promise of better support for academics in negotiating the demands of discipline, department and university without overwork and systemic exploitation.
