This article explores the English translations of contemporary Ukrainian war poetry featured in the two anthologies Lysty z Ukrainy (Letters from Ukraine, 2016) and Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine (2017), through the prism of Jacques Derrida’s concept of “relevant.” It argues that although the economy of the original poems could not always be sustained, these translations nonetheless remain relevant primarily thanks to what they do rather than what they say. After contextualizing the recent (re)emergence of war poems as a genre of Ukrainian literature and providing an overview of the two translation anthologies, the article compares the Ukrainian originals with their English translations and discusses the various translation challenges. It then returns to Derrida’s own case study to extend the modifier “relevant” beyond its “economic” parameters to apply it more broadly to translation’s socio-political significance. It concludes with a discussion of how the two anthologies in question reflect the state of the reception of contemporary Ukrainian literature in the English-speaking world and how the translations they feature inform our understanding of the (un)translatability of poetry.

The article examines the poetry and fiction by Mykola Vingranovskyj in English translations. Attention is paid to the chronological sequence of translations, the figures of translators and the works selected for translation, their equivalence to the original. The first translation of M. Vingranovskyj's fiction (the short story "White Flowers") appeared with the assistance of Yu. Lutsky in Canada and aimed at popularizing Ukrainian literature among students. The short story opens the extremely lyrical world of Mykola Vingranovskyj, where the story revolves not around the event, but around the feelings, which brings the short story closer to poetry. The novella was included to the anthology (Modern Ukrainian Short Stories, 1973) as the example of the prose of the sixties (shistdesyatnyky), which departed from socialist-realist ideological canons and turned to the emotional and expressive potential of artistic language. The translation of Yuri and Moira Lutsky is marked by the desire to convey as fully as possible the author's individual style, including figurative metaphor, to create a text equivalent to the original in communicative orientation. The collection Summer Evening (1987), translated by Anatoliy Bilenko, was published after M. Vingranovskyj was awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine (1984). The collection includes stories for children's audiences, conveying children's perception of the world: Chest, Shaggi, The Gosling, Good Night, What Makes the World Spin, Summer Evening. A. Bilenko's translations are notable for the adequacy of the reproduction of artistic and stylistic features of the original, semantic equivalence. Some translated poems, which emphasize the civic component (Sistine Madonna, To My Sea, On the Golden Table, The First Lullaby, Star Prelude) were included to the anthology of Ukrainian poetry (Anthology of Soviet Ukrainian Poetry, 1982), and Russian translators were involved in translating the poems (Dorian Rottenberg, Michael McGreg), which significantly reduced the artistic value of poetry. During the times of independent Ukraine, competitions for translations to the writer's anniversaries were initiated. However, translated works have not been published in collections and anthologies. Active work on translations of M. Vingranovskyj's works is still ahead.

This article aims to outline main tasks when translating poetry of the Great Kobzar into Japanese. Analytical, biographical, contextual-descriptive and comparative methods were used in the study. In particular, the analytical method is applied when examining the Japanese works related to a poetic heritage of T. Shevchenko and its translations, biographical – when considering some facts from life of the Japanese slavists, which contributed to their interest in works of the Ukrainian poet. The contextual-descriptive and comparative methods are used in analyzing translated collections of the Great Kobzar’s poetry in Japanese and problems of the Ukrainian-Japanese literary translation. Poetry of Taras Shevchenko found its readers in Japan thanks to translation efforts of Taisuke Shibuya, Takayuki Murai, Gаchiro Tazawa, Takashi Juge, Shosuke Komatsu, Kazuo Nakai, Takao Hino, Takao Okamoto and Etsuko Fujii. Three main problems of translation mastership can be distinguished in the Japanese slavistics. First, expediency of translating the Kobzar's poems not from the Ukrainian original, but from the Russian and English translations. This issue was brought up by Kazuo Nakai, who noted that this practice of using the Russian or English texts continued until the end of 1990s. Secondly, significant problems in case of the Ukrainian-Japanese literary translation are associated with untranslatables for designation of certain cultural, socio-historical and other phenomena. Third, selection of the modern or obsolete language for translation: Takashi Juge used obsolete words, while Etsuko Fujii chooses the modern Japanese language, so that young people could also read the poems of Kobzar. Thus, the Japanese slavists still have a lot of problems in the field of the Ukrainian-Japanese literary translation, to overcome which each of them uses its own approach. Further study of the Japanese translation of the Ukrainian literary works seem to have potential for deepening cultural and literary relations between two countries.

The article reflects the results of scientific and philological research, which made it possible to analyze the ways of translating the image of Ukraine in English translations of Ukrainian poetry. Based on the generalization of the research results of scientific sources, the concept of literary translation as a linguistic problem is revealed. A special connection between the artistic image and the linguistic category on the basis of which it is formed is noted. The main requirements for the translation of works of art are highlighted, among them: accuracy, conciseness, clarity and literacy. It has been established that the main difficulty of literary translation is the accurate understanding of lexical units and the relationship between what the author wanted to convey to the reader and what the translator translated. Two aspects of the Ukrainian poetry translation are highlighted: linguocognitive and linguocultural. It is determined that the linguistic and cultural aspect of translation analysis allows to identify the features of reflection in the English poetic translation of the value dominants of Ukrainian ethnoculture based on the comparison of the cultural concept name, symbols of culture and emotional expression, and linguocognitive allows to highlight the features of the concepts system reflection of the Ukrainian author in the figurative system of English translations of his lyrics. The concept and role of the cultural concept UKRAINE in English translations, which is expressed by lexical means of a particular language, are studied. There are four components of the cultural concept: conceptual, value, symbolic and figurative. It is revealed that the elements of imagery and symbolism are structural parts of the cultural concept. It has been found that the translator’s understanding of the author’s system of concepts is a condition for reproducing the image of his country in translation. The symbols of Ukrainian culture in poetic works are analyzed, which are multi-valued subject images that express values and worldviews. The artistic symbol is considered to be one of the types of figurative concept with a multilevel structure of reference and the main aspects of its analysis should include determining the depth of the original symbol and its culturological components. Analysis of the translation of symbols showed that the most commonly used way of reproducing Ukrainian poetic symbolism is tracing, less commonly used methods of transcription, transliteration and equivalent translation. It is determined that the symbolism reproduced in the translation cannot convey all the cultural components and semiological depth, because the associative connections with the place of its origin are interrupted. It causes a symbolic appropriation of the image of Ukraine in the target culture, and at the same time conveys its ethnic uniqueness. The main ways of conveying the image of Ukraine in translations of Ukrainian lyrics are revealed, as a result of which literary translation adapts to the norms of the language of translation and becomes accurate and clear. The following lexical transformations in translation have been singled out: transcription, transliteration, equivalent translation, tracing and contextual substitution method. A comparative analysis of the translation of symbols and images of Ukraine in translations of Ukrainian poetry. Comprehensive research has shown that the most prevalent methods of translation are contextual substitution, equivalent translation and tracing. Thus, the article fulfills all the tasks are fulfilled in the work and it is also determined that the components of symbolism and imagery are a structural part of the concept of UKRAINE in general.

This article is devoted to the analysis and study of the translation of archaic pronouns in fiction. Archaic pronouns are important lexical elements that not only serve semantic functions but also significantly influence the stylistics and emotional perception of the text. The aim of the study is to explore the practical aspects of translating archaic pronouns and their impact on the perception of the original text. Different methods of translating archaic pronouns from English to Ukrainian are analyzed in the research as well as their influence on the stylistics and emotional expressiveness of the text. The study is based on the analysis of fiction and its translations for various genres, including poetry and prose.

According to the results of the online academic conference "Waka poetry around the world: Viewing reception and transformation of Japanese culture through multilingual translation", an analysis of the Ukrainian translation of the 469th waka poem from the poetic anthology "Kokin Wakashū" (the Collection of Japanese Poetry Ancient and Modern) by I. P. Bondarenko was carried out. It is this translation that is the subject of the presented study. The goal, which was to reveal the peculiarities of the Ukrainian version of the mentioned poem, was achieved due to its comparison with Chinese, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Spanish translations. It was found that the Ukrainian translation of the waka poem No. 469 from the anthology "Kokin Wakashū" is characterized by common features that are typical for a number of translations into European languages. In particular, the syllabic structure of the original (a waka poem is composed of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables) has not been preserved in the Ukrainian translation, as well as in the other translations, and these translations themselves are written in five lines. Such common features also include lexical-semantic transformations caused by the difficulties of translating Japanese realia into European languages. For example, such nominations from the original work as "hototogisu" and "ayame" in many multilingual translation versions, including the studied Ukrainian one, are translated with the help of the words "cuckoo" and "iris", respectively, instead of their exact analogues – "lesser cuckoo" and "iris sanguinea". At the same time, there are foreign language versions with observance of the original syllabic verse and an accurate translation of the mentioned realia. Along with the common features, some features that make the translation of the 469th waka verse into Ukrainian unique were also revealed. Among those the translation of the original "satsuki" (the fifth month according to the old calendar and approximately June according to the modern one) as the season of the growth of herbs through the Ukrainian equivalent to "May" (the fifth month according to the modern calendar) literally meaning the "month of herbs", as well as the combination of the first and the second part of the poem through an emotional connection can be named.

The article deals with peculiarities of translations of neologisms of the Polish poet Bolesław Leśmian’s works into Ukrainian. Translation of Bolesław Leśmian’s poetry into different languages meets difficulties due to the fact, that a lot of author’s neologisms appear in it and motivate translator to thoroughly analyze the peculiarities of author’s derivation and make their own strategy of neologisms’ reproduction in the language of translation. Study of experience of translators this poet’s works into Italian, English and other languages helps literature researcher to systematize and accommodate difficulties which appear on the way of choosing the corresponding lexeme or making up a neologism. Due to familiarization with the artist’s worldview, the style of his writing, features of making up neologisms and utilizing them in the original texts, conclusions about making up and functioning of the new words in the texts of translation have been formulated. The translator of B. Łeśmian’s poetry into Ukrainian Marianna Kiianovska utilized all spectrums of possibilities of Ukrainian derivation and actual productive formants in order to make up neologisms and reproduce the style of poet’s writing. The examples from the book of selected poems "Angels" have been given in the article and the peculiarities of appearing of Ukrainian neologisms belonging to different parts of speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, numerals, adverbs) have been analyzed. The similarity of both Ukrainian and Polish languages allows to take advantage of the derivations formants of source language to transfer Polish lexemes to Ukrainian speaking field and to make up new words, which are analogous to existing, even on condition that formant loses its productivity. The ways of derivation, impact of the idea of original texts and original author’s neologisms on the translator’s strategy and word selection, the role of tropes, idioms and analogies in the process of new words appearing have been researched.

This thesis is a textual and contextual study of English renditions of poetry in Luo Guanzhong’s Sanguo zhi yanyi, in terms of their artistic approach and their bearing on the artistic functions which poetry fulfills in the novel. There are several English renditions of the Sanguo zhi yanyi in full or in part, including two full translations by Charles H. Brewit-Taylor and Moss Roberts. While the two full translations form the focus of the study, Roberts’s abridged version is also included. Published fifteen years before the full rendition by the same translator, the abridged version serves every now and then as a reference point showing how an individual’s interpretive perception may change over time and bear on choices made in a literary translation. Insertion of poetry in a novel is basically unique to Chinese fiction, often contributing to its overall artistic effects as an organic element. A Western reader coming from a different cultural background may employ different standards in evaluating the artistic role and appeal of poetry in a Chinese classical novel. In an attempt to be as flexible and open-minded as possible, this thesis does not adopt any particular theoretical perspective, but makes use of literary concepts to facilitate the analysis as appropriate. To assess the literary translations, concrete analysis of selected original poems in semantic, syntactic, auditory, imagistic, symbolic and stylistic terms is made before the strategies adopted by the translated versions, along with their merits and limitations, are discussed. Detailed discussions of textual features and contextual elements offer an evidence-based appraisal of the renditions. artistic approaches, which are significant in shedding light on the translators’ attempts to re-create and revitalize the artistic appeal of the source text within the multidimensional context of the target language and culture. It is also hoped that the thesis help shed light on some general as well as language- and culture-specific issues in the translation of classical Chinese poetry.

Poetry translation evaluation from ancient Chinese to English has been subjective in China. This is caused by the indefinable and intangible notion of ‘poetic spirit’, which is often used in influential translators’ criteria, and by the lack of a systematic investigation of translation evaluation. The problem of subjective criteria has remained unresolved for nearly a century. In order to improve the subjective criteria of poetry translation evaluation, this thesis is an attempt to make objective evaluations of the English translations of an ancient Chinese poem using stylistic theories. To make an objective criticism, it is necessary to offer evidence which is based on systematic and reliable criteria and replicable evaluation procedures. By applying stylistic theories to both the source text and the target texts, it is possible to make a judgement based on the stylistic features found in the texts themselves. Thus, objective evaluation of poetry translation from ancient Chinese to English can be made. This research is qualitative with the data consisting of one ancient Chinese poem as the source text and six English translations as the target texts. It carries out stylistic analyses on the data with two approaches based on the cognitive stylistic concept of figure and ground and the linguistic stylistic theory of foregrounding. The target texts are judged by the evidence of locative relations and foregrounding features. This research also explores and proposes a practical framework for poetry translation. The research findings suggest how to make objective poetry translation evaluations and improve translation techniques. They also point out the need to integrate stylistics with translation evaluation to make improvements in the field.

This is the first discursive study to examine the Arabic translations of a number of major modern poems in the English language in particular T.S. Eliot's 'The Waste Land' and Walt Whitman's 'Song of Myself'. These translations were done by the Arab translators who were themselves modernist poets, including Badr Shakir al- Sayyab, to whom a separate chapter is dedicated as a case study. The thesis begins by underlining the relationship between translation and modernity by reviewing some critical studies and translational strategies. The framework allows me to approach the given poems comprehensively, since this study argues that poetry is not only a linguistic composition but also a socio-cultural construct. Thus, this study treats each of these translations as a discursive process comprising three contexts: situational, verbal and cognitive. The situational context highlights the background of these poems and each one's importance in its own system. It also reveals the reasons why Arab modernists were drawn to these poems. The verbal context studies the Arabic translations of the selected poems. It provides a comparative analysis, although its aim is to emphasize specific stylistic issues which function more than others in the target system. The cognitive context underlines the impact of these English poems on Arabic modernity on formal, stylistic and thematic levels. Finally, the thesis covers the main trends in the translation of English poetry into Arabic, and in so doing it presents a new approach. It also paves the way for more studies to explore further aspects of these works of translation.

In un contesto di lingue minoritarie, come nel caso del gaelico scozzese, la traduzione letteraria verso lingue maggioritarie può avere una natura ambivalente: se da un lato garantisce la diffusione di una letteratura altrimenti isolata, dall’altro potrebbe perpetuare degli squilibri di potere che spesso caratterizzano i rapporti tra la cultura dominante e la cultura minoritaria. Se questo è specialmente vero nella traduzione dal gaelico all’inglese, lingua la cui espansione è avvenuta a scapito della cultura gaelica, è possibile che anche nelle traduzioni italiane, prodotte generalmente tramite la versione inglese, tali squilibri vengano riconfermati. Nella presente tesi verranno analizzate le circostanze che hanno portato alla minoritizzazione del gaelico, individuando certe dinamiche riconducibili al postcolonialismo. Si commenterà il dibattito prettamente scozzese sulle più comuni pratiche di traduzione e pubblicazione utilizzate nell’editoria gaelica, adottando una prospettiva che mutua dai Minority Translation Studies, secondo cui la traduzione, se usata correttamente, può essere uno strumento capace di invertire il declino di una lingua minoritaria. Infine, si analizzeranno le risposte dei poeti gaelici e dei traduttori che ne hanno reso le opere fruibili in Italia. La ricerca svelerà che le attuali pratiche editoriali riguardanti la poesia gaelica, spesso a favore di un pubblico anglofono, non rispecchiano la diversità di posizioni degli autori intervistati, e dunque si raccomanderà l’adozione di pratiche per un panorama editoriale più rappresentativo. Lo studio mostrerà anche come, nonostante i traduttori italiani abbiano generalmente adottato strategie per compensare la scarsa conoscenza del gaelico, maggiore consapevolezza e ulteriori strategie siano necessarie affinché le pratiche traduttive e editoriali in Italia possano essere il più possibile vantaggiose alla promozione e alla rivitalizzazione della lingua, della letteratura e della cultura gaeliche.

This thesis presents an edition of Contemplations of the Dread and Love of God, a late Middle English devotional prose text for which no critical edition is currently available. I have transcribed and collated the text from all sixteen extant manuscripts and the 1506 printed edition. An investigation of the errors and variants according to the classical method of textual criticism has yielded little in the way of conclusive results, and it has therefore not proved possible to construct a stemma of manuscripts from the corpus of evidence as it now exists. My edition therefore uses one manuscript (Maidstone MS Museum 6) as a base; I emend the text of Maidstone where necessary, and cite variants from all the other witnesses to show all differences of substance. A full critical apparatus is provided, comprising: the text with variants, textual notes and glossary. The introduction includes a full description of all the manuscripts and the two early printed editions, an outline of the methods of textual criticism applied and their results, and an explanation of the choice of base manuscript; information about the language of the Maidstone manuscript and the date of the text are also provided, as is an outline of my editorial principles. The thesis also contains two appendices. The first of these deals briefly with the twenty-two instances where individual chapters of Contemplations appear in other manuscript compilations; the second discusses the English and Latin prayers which follow the full text in some manuscripts.

This chapter describes Russian-Ukrainian literary translation from the early 1920s to the early 2020s within the so-called “common cultural space.” Close, chronological analysis of the shifting priorities across a century of Ukraine’s translation-publishing history demonstrates that Russian-Ukrainian translation has both bright and dark sides. On the one hand, literary translation provided a means by which Ukrainian writers absorbed Russian culture, its literary forms and ideas, thereby contributing to the advancement of Ukrainian literature. On the other hand, a Soviet cultural space was established that not only deliberately isolated the Communist bloc from the world cultural space, but was intended to replace it by imposing Russian language and translations from Russian. For the Soviet Republic of Ukraine (UkrSSR), the result was Russification of the Ukrainian language and the provincialization of Ukrainian literature. This study distinguishes the key stages in recent Russian-Ukrainian translation, from the earliest phase between 1917-1926 when poetry translation played a leading role, to the present-day when Ukraine’s “common information space” with Russia contracted to the point of disappearing following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and then full-scale invasion in February 2022. Echoing the view voiced by Ukrainian author Oksana Zabuzhko that Putin’s offensive on 24 February owed much to Dostoevskyism, Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science passed legislation barring the inclusion of texts belonging to the Russian literary canon from foreign literature programmes in Ukrainian secondary and higher education institutions. By way of extension, translations of Russian-speaking writers from the former Soviet republics have also been curbed.

The presented annotated “The Bibliography of Translations of Works by Sergey Esenin (1920–1927)” is the result of many years of work on the fundamental scientific project “The Chronicle of the Life and Work of S. A. Esenin” in 5 volumes (7 books, 2003–2018). In this work for the first time previously unknown lifetime and posthumous translations of works by Esenin were introduced into scientific circulation and dated. Most of the hard-to-access publications, in cooperation with foreign colleagues, were reviewed de visu. The result of this research is the presented, most comprehensive to date bibliography of the translations of Esenin’s works: from the first, not revealed V. Hartmann’s translations into German (“Autumn” and “Singing Call”) to the numerous posthumous translation 1926–1927. The Bibliography is accompanied by indexes: the poet’s works, the languages of translations and the names of translators. During Esenin’s lifetime his works were translated into 17 languages: German, English, Swedish, French, Italian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Serbian, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Latvian, Armenian, Georgian, Japanese and Yiddish. In total, 205 publications of 93 Esenin’s works (or their fragments) in 21 languages were revealed during the indicated period.

Translations of Byron’s works occupy a special place in the work of P. A. Kulish (1819– 1897). They can be divided into three parts: nine poems included in the poetry collection Borrowed kobza; Don Juan, first canto; Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. As far as we know, Kulish was the first to attempt to translate Byron’s last, unfinished poem into Ukrainian. He chose not the “learned” type of translation, but “rehash”, which allowed more free experimentation in the field of vocabulary and rhythm. The edition was published as a separate reprint in 1891. Kulish saw his task in providing a translation of Byron’s poem Don Juan to help the younger generation of Ukrainians as a kind of textbook of life, as a means of protecting oneself from spiritual passions, from human egoism. In addition, the translation of the poem was important for Kulish in terms of developing a lyrical narrative style, which he applied in his last poem Kulish in Hell. Byron developed his own style of narration and used a confidential tone in the poem, referring to the direct experience of the reader. Kulish’s translation into Ukrainian of such a complex and rich work in terms of vocabulary, intonation, and rhyme was a rather difficult experiment. This translation is important both for the study of the creativity of Kulish and the processes of formation of the Ukrainian literary language and Ukrainian poetry. Refs 10.

The presented article discusses the issues of Nakhchivan literary environment and literary translation. It is noted that translation is a creation in itself, and the activities of representatives of the Nakhchivan literary environment in this area are exemplary. In general, during the independence period, some experience was gained in the literary environment of Nakhchivan, translations from German, English and French by our poets and writers Hamid Arzulu, Shirmammad Gulubeyli, Shamil Zaman who is famous as poet, prose-writer and translator were delivered to readers in the form of books and works were published in the press. The examples presented in the article once again prove the perfection of the writers' translation activities, their translations from German, English and French provide the Azerbaijani reader with full information about the society, people and their life of these peoples.
