Abstract In this study, the air temperature and velocity component means were also computed, as were the fluctuation values of the three component velocities (u, v, and w) and the air temperature (T). The instantaneous velocity can be broken down into its tally of varying and time-averaged contributions using a process known as Reynolds decomposition. The Reynolds decomposition depends on how you define the mean. The results show that the behaviors of the u, v, and w diurnal cycles are anticipated in ABL. The best fit is for air temperature because the correlation coefficient between time and temperature is large. The component fluctuated around zero, and the sum of the fluctuation averages equaled zero. The fluctuation of u was large, which increased because of the initial value of u and because of wind direction and friction velocity.

Reactions involving lipase-catalyzed interesterification of lipids, which are of commendable interest in biotechnology, have been monitored and assayed by radiochemical methods using 14C-labeled substrates. Medium chain (C12 plus Cu) triacylglycerols were reacted in the presence of an immobilized lipase from Mucor miehei and hexane at 45 °C with methyl [1-14C]oleate. [1-14C]oleic acid, [carboxyl-14C]trioleoylglycerol. [1-14C)octadecenyl alcohol, and [U-14C)glycerol, each of known specific activity. The reactions were monitored and the rate of interesterification determined by radio thin layer chromatography from the incorporation of radioactivity into acyl moieties of triacylglycerols (from methyl oleate, oleic acid, and trioleoylglycerol), alkyl moieties of wax esters (from octadecenyl alcohol), and into glycerol backbone of monoacylglycerols and diacylglycerols (from glycerol).

Abstract Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP) etiology remains elusive, recently has been associated with von-Willebrand Factor-cleavage protein inhibitory antibodies. Plasma exchange (PE) remains the gold standard therapy, however there are some cases resistant to it. Rituximab has been proved useful in antibody mediated immune disorders. We report our experience in 3 consecutive TTP patients, refractory to PE and successfully treated with Rituximab 375 mg/m2 weekly x 6. Case 1. A 41 years old female diagnosed with Hasimoto thyroiditis 4 years before. In January 2003 she was admitted to hospital with headache, abnormal behaviour, 16x109/L platelets and 4–5% schistocytes. 47 PE sessions with a total of 235 fresh frozen plasma units (FFP) for replacement were made. Corticosteroids, IVIG and vincristine were added, but no improvement was achieved. Then, Rituximab was administered, after the second dose a complete clinical response was attained, and she remains well by now. Case 2. A 21 years old female was into hospital in October 2003 with bruises, paraesthesia, skin pallor and jaundice. Hb 6.5 g/dL, platelets 4.6x109/L, LDH 1223 U/L and 13% schistocytes. She received 24 PE with 96 FFP units, plus corticosteroids and vincristine, with no response. Rituximab was administered, after the third dose she experienced a complete response, and remains stable since then. Case 3. female, 35, she was into hospital in January 2005 with diarrhoea, vomiting, jaundice, seizures and bruises, Hb 4.5 g/dL, platelets 10x109/L, LDH 2486 U/L and 20% schistocytes. She received 43 PE with 129 FFP units and corticosteroids, but her neurological situation worsened. Rituximab was administered, after the first dose she experienced a complete response which maintains nowadays Conclusions: intense PE remains the gold standard therapy, it is expensive, scarce, and not free of secondary effects. In a group of patients refractory to PE Rituximab is emerging as useful safe option, it was very well tolerated in ours cases. Unfortunately, we were not able to test the vWF-CP activity and its inhibitor. Our results encourage us to use Rituximab earlier than the first case, in order to avoid too much PE, and now we are considering Rituximab as a second option in patients refractory to PE, but much more cases must be considered.

The Qin-Hang Metallogenic Belt (QHMB), an important metallogenic belt in South China, hosts Cu and W–Sn polymetallic deposits. The Tongshanling ore field in the QHMB is characterized by the coexistence of Cu- and W-bearing polymetallic deposits, which are related to granodiorite and granite porphyry. This study examined whole-rock geochemistry, geochronology, and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopes to determine the genetic relationship between diverse ore-related granitoids (i.e., granodiorite and granite porphyry) and Cu–W metallogeny in the Tongshanling ore field. Zircon LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating shows that the granodiorite and granite porphyry in the Tongshanling ore field were emplaced at 163.7 ± 0.4 Ma to 154.7 ± 0.6 Ma and 161.1 ± 0.3 Ma, respectively. Geochemically, the granodiorites are classified as oxidized I-type, while the highly evolved granite porphyry is reduced A-type. The Lu–Hf isotopic composition of the granodiorites is characterized by εHf(t) values ranging from –10.49 to –4.99 (average = –7.17), with corresponding TDMC ages ranging from 1524 to 1877 Ma (average = 1682 Ma). In contrast, the granite porphyry has higher εHf(t) values (–3.60 to –1.58, average = –2.78) and younger TDMC (1310–1438 Ma, average = 1387 Ma). The εNd(t) values of granodiorite are −8.06 to −7.37 and the two-stage model ages (TDM2) are 1543–1598 Ma, while the granite porphyry has higher εNd(t) values (−3.0 to −3.4) and younger TDM2 ages (1195–1223 Ma). The results show that the granodiorite and granite porphyry were formed from partial melting of different Mesoproterozoic basement rocks under varying degrees of crust–mantle interaction. Granite porphyry underwent well-recorded fractional crystallization. Compared to the Cu-forming granodiorite, the W-forming granite porphyry has a higher differentiation index, higher crystallization temperatures of zircon (average = 708 °C versus 631 °C), and lower oxygen fugacity (median ΔFMQ = –2.21 versus –1.77).

The Bistritzer–MacDonald (BM) model, introduced by Bistritzer and MacDonald [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 108, 12233–12237 (2011); arXiv:1009.4203], attempts to capture electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), even at incommensurate twist angles, by using an effective periodic model over the bilayer moiré pattern. Starting from a tight-binding model, we identify a regime where the BM model emerges as the effective dynamics for electrons modeled as wave-packets spectrally concentrated at monolayer Dirac points up to error that can be rigorously estimated. Using measured values of relevant physical constants, we argue that this regime is realized in TBG at the first “magic” angle.

Abstract This chapter and the next attempt to trace further additions to the Roman administrative system in the period after C. Gracchus’ consequential reform of 122 B.C. that introduced a provincia repetundarum. Following the structure of chapter 9, in chapters 10 and 11 (the latter covering the years 81-50) discussion of the annexation of new territorial provinciae precedes permanent developments in the city. Then, in each of these two chapters comes an examination of special assignments in the spheres militiae and domi. Chapter u examines further select aspects of the city provinciae, while chapters 13-15 round off coverage of the various territorial provinces down to the year 50 B.C. At the end of chapter 15, I have summed up the principal ways in which the Senate staffed the various provinciae in the period 122-50 B.C. This is a sequel to the survey at 9.4.1-4 that treats this same question for the period down to 122 B.C. Commands in the permanent territorial provinciae discussed in chapters 10-11 and 13-15 are set out in tabular form in Appendices A.5, A.6, and A.7.

Abstract In this chapter the relationship between letters and sound will be discussed. I assume that most speakers of Norwegian will have a set of correspondence rules that relate each letter to an unmarked sound value. In many cases we will be dealing with universal or near-universal relationships, as for example m, n,f= [m, n, f]. In other cases we have a language specific correspondence overruling the universal one, as in u= [u]. The emphasis will be on aspects of the orthography where the correspondence is not straightforward in this sense. Since Bokmål is the norm used by the great majority of UEN speakers, the relationship between UEN and Nynorsk wiU not be considered. The chapter is organized as foilows. Section 12. l is a short recapitulation of the ideology underlying Norwegian spelling, see also Chapter 1.2. In Section 12.2 the alphabet wilJ be presented. Section 12.3 will deal with the extent to which prosodic features are signalled in writing, while Sections 12.4 and 12.5 will be concerned with vowels and consonants respectively. The chapter will be closed by a brief section on diacritics.

ABSTRACT The Franciscan Complex of California, the type example of an exhumed accretionary complex, records a protracted history of voluminous subduction accretion along the western margin of North America. Recent geochronological work has improved our knowledge of the timing of accretion, but the details of the accretionary history are disputed, in part, due to uncertainties in regional-scale correlations of different units. We present new detrital zircon U-Pb ages from two sites on opposite sides of San Francisco Bay in central California that confirm previously proposed correlations. Both sites are characterized by a structurally higher blueschist-facies unit (Angel Island unit) underlain by a prehnite-pumpellyite-facies unit (Alcatraz unit). The Angel Island unit yields maximum depositional ages (MDAs) ranging from 112 ± 1 Ma to 114 ± 1 Ma (±2σ), and the Alcatraz unit yields MDAs between 94 ± 2 Ma and 99 ± 1 Ma. Restoration of post-subduction dextral displacement suggests these sites were originally 44–78 km apart and much closer to other Franciscan units that are now exposed farther south in the Diablo Range. Comparison with detrital zircon dates from the Diablo Range supports correlations of the Bay Area units with certain units in the Diablo Range. In contrast, correlations with Franciscan units in the northern Coast Ranges of California are not robust: some units are clearly older than those in the Bay Area whereas others exhibit distinct differences in provenance. Integration of age data from throughout the Franciscan Complex indicates long-lived and episodic accretion from the Early Cretaceous to Paleogene. Although minor, sporadic accretion began earlier, significant accretion occurred during the interval 123–80 Ma and was followed by minor accretion at ca. 53–49 Ma. Periods of accretion and nonaccretion were associated with arc magmatism in the Sierra Nevada–Klamath region, cessation of arc activity, and reorganization of paleodrainage systems, which implicates plate dynamics and sediment availability as major controls on the development of the Franciscan Complex.

Abstract It is proposed that only ceramics, which are based on host-phases similar to naturally occurring accessory minerals including zircon, (Zr,Hf,An,…)SiO4; hafnon, (Hf,Zr,An,…)SiO4; baddeleyite, (Zr,Hf,An,…)O2; tazheranite (cubic zirconia), (Zr,Hf,Ca,Ti,An,…)O2; garnet, (Ca,Fe,Gd,An,…)3(Al,Fe,Si,An,…)5O12 and perovskite, (Ca,Gd,An,…)(Al,Fe,Ti,…)O3, are the most suitable materials for actinide (An = U, Pu, Np, Am, Cm) isolation in deep geological formations. Solid solution of Pu in cubic zirconia, (Zr,Pu)O2, could be used as ceramic nuclear fuel which is competitive with mixed oxide fuel, (U,Pu)O2. Samples of these ceramics doped with Pu from a few % to 37 wt. % El. were successfully synthesized and investigated. Physical and chemical properties of synthesized ceramics, and the industrial scale applications of these suggested waste forms, are discussed.

Commercial concentrates (CC) of vitamin K dependent coagulation factors may cause thrombosis or coagulation factor consumption while more highly purified (17 U/mg) factor IX (IX) concentrates do not seem to be thrombogenic (Menache et al, Blood 64:1220, 1984). Monoclonal antibody (MAb) immunoaffinity purified IX of high specific activity from CC or recombinant factor IX sources may also improve therapy. In this report, 400 mg of Affigel-10 linked A-7 MAb was used to bind factor IX in the presence of metal ions (20 mM MgCl2). Elution of IX was with 20 mM EDTA. Thrombogenicity of CC and IX prepared from CC by MAb immunoaffinity was tested. A CC which was thrombogenic in the stasis thrombosis assay (CC #1) produced large thrombi at doses of 50, 50, and 100 U/kg while none were seen with the IX produced from this CC at doses of 106 and 234 U/kg. A heparin treated CC (CC #2) which was not thrombogenic in the stasis-thrombosis assay at doses of 100 U/kg was infused in 4 rabbits at 100 U/kg and platelets, fibrinogen, AT-III antigen, and factors IX, V, and VIII were monitored for 5 hours post-infusion. Immunoaffinity IX from this CC was infused in 4 rabbits at 214-243 U/kg for comparison. Mean platelet count decrease was 20% in CC group and 8% for the IX group. Mean factor V and VIII decreased 26 and 36% respectively with CC while no decrease was seen in the IX rabbits (p < .05). Fibrinogen values and AT-III did not differ for IX or CC groups. Mean factor IX activity at 1 hour increased 1.6 fold for CC and 3 fold for IX. Yields for IX purification were 80 and 85%. Clotting activity was 143 and 101 U/mg and antigen was approximately 200 U/mg. Purification was over 90 fold by MAb immunoaf f inity. There was no detectable factor II, VII or X activity in MAb purified IX. Non-activated PTT was greater than 200 seconds for CC #1 and 158 seconds for CC #2. Column capacity was at least 150 mg. These results demonstrate that factor IX is not the thrombogenic component of some CC. Also, IX prepared by MAb immunoaffinity may have therapeutic advantage for patients at risk for thrombosis and adverse effects of contaminating proteins in commercial concentrates.

A Protein C (PC) concentrate may be useful in treating patients with congenital or acquired Protein C deficiencies. A method for preparation of a human Protein C concentrate has been developed using a by-product of American Red Cross Factor IX production as the starting material (Menache et. al. Blood, 64, 1220). Levels of other vitamin K dependent proteins in the Protein C concentrate were measured and found to be <10 units per 100 units of PC, except for Protein S. The level of Protein S as judged by immunological assay was 30 u/100 u PC. Assay of the PC concentrate using chrcmogenic substrates revealed that levels of thrombin, Factor 3a and Factor IXa were less than 0.006 u/mL. In addition, Antithrombin III and ax -macroglobulin were not detected. The vivo effects of Protein C concentrate and Protein C activated by thrombin have been tested in anesthetized rabbits. Thrombin was removed from the activated Protein C by ion-exchange chromatography; depletion was verified by S-2238 or by a clotting assay (< 0.006 u/mL). Rabbits were injected with Protein C concentrate (400 ug/kg) or activated Protein C 24 - 48 ug/Kg). The activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), FactorV (FV) and Factor VIII (FVIII) levels were measured in samples collected over the next three hours. Infusion of PC concentrate elevated the level of PC to 150% of the preinfusion level within 30 min. It did not change the levels of FV, FVIII, fibrinogen or platelet count. In contrast, infusion of activated Protein C produced progressive prolongation of the APTT. Levels of FV and FVIII were decreased to 25% and 50% of preinfusion levels, respectivelv, three hours after the infusion. Fibrinogen and platelet levels were unchanged during that period. These data demonstrate that activated human Protein C concentrate induces an anticoagulant effect that can be readily measured in rabbits.

The task of the analysis in question is to look at the problem and show what impact the new switching conditions in the operation of individual transformer stations have on the energy equipment in transformer stations and transmission lines. Examples that have been done include impacting: High power circuit breakers: This analysis is based on guaranteed values by the circuit breaker manufacturer. The dependence of the sum of the number of permitted interruptions n on the interruption current i is shown. On the basis of which calculations were made, from which it is clearly seen that a lower breaking current extends the lifetime of the switch. The contacts themselves cannot be replaced as they are not supplied separately by the manufacturers. The position of the contacts in millimeters is important to the operation of the circuit breaker, so it is clear that replacing them in the field can compromise the clearance and the possibility of re-arcing. All these facts lead to the conclusion that the service life of the switch is directly related to the values of the short circuit current. Substation earthing network: The impact of short-circuit currents on the plant's earthing system through the thermal impulse parameters and the cross-sectional area of the earthing and earthing conductors and the values of touch and step voltages in the plant. TS Beograd 5 stands out as a representative example of this influence with a grid network for grounding made of copper conductors. A high titer, boost responding inhibitor was present in a patient and his nephew, both with severe hemophilia B. On digests of their DNA, Southern blots hybridized to a cDNA were normal. They had no detectable IX antigen, including immuno-radiometric assays with a calcium-requiring polyclonal antibody fraction, in either serum or urine (less than 0.03 U/dl).Plasmas from the patient and his nephew had 12 and 25 NIH U/ml inhibitor titers, respectively. They were fractionated over IX-agarose with calcium. Unlike fractionation of rabbit polyclonal antibodies, EDTA eluates did not bind IX. Purified patient inhibitors were eluted at low pH and contained detectable IgG1, IgG2 and IgG4 but not IgG3, IgA or IgM by radial immunodiffusion. On immunoradiometric assay, each patient's 125I-inhibitor bound to IX on the same solid phase inhibitor, indicating recognition of more than one epitope. Factor IX Ag was readily detected in these assays. The patients' inhibitors competed with binding of 125I-IX binding to each of 3 monoclonal antibodies. Each monoclonal antibody blocked 125I-IX binding to its own, insolubilized species. Similar results were obtained on an inhibitor plasma provided by H. Reisner (Chapel Hill, NC) which, unlike the present cases, contained a calcium-requiring antibody fraction (Briet E, et al Prog Clin Biol Res 150:123-139, 1984). Our patient's inhibitor was tested with two rabbit polyclonal fractions; the calcium-dependent fraction (epitopes in the light chain of IXa) and a specific heavy chain-binding fraction. The latter was from immunoaffinity purification of the non-calcium binding rabbit polyclonal fraction over an insolubilized synthetic peptide containing residues 256 through 269 of the IX sequence. Both fractions, in fluid phase, inhibited binding of 125I-IX to their own but not the other solid phase fraction. The patient's inhibitor did not block 125I-IX binding of the calcium-requiring fraction but did compete with the fraction prepared from the peptide column. These data suggest that the defect in our patient is a mutation between the Gla domain's 2nd or 3rd exons and the second growth factor-like region in the 5th exon.

Deviations of hemogram values in distant periods of invasion in opisthorchiasis are poorly studied, they are only usually studied in case of serious complications of the disease. An experiment was carried out on sexually mature male rodents (rabbits). The invasive dose for each animal in the observation group was 50 metacercariae of Opisthorchis felineus (n=10). Clinically healthy male animals of the same age and sex (n=10) were the control group. The leukogram was studied after 30 months to assess the condition of the animals. Capillary blood smears were fixed and stained by May-Grunwald and Romanowsky-Giemsa methods and examined by light immersion microscopy manually using the meander method. Statistical data processing was performed using the Microsoft Excel application package by calculating the arithmetic mean with the standard error of the mean. Analysis of intergroup data was performed using nonparametric Mann-Whitney U-criterion for unrelated populations with non-normal distribution with p ≤ 0.05. In an intergroup comparison of the data obtained, the number of lymphocytes in the observation group was 1.35 less than the control; stab neutrophils were 5.8 less than the control; the differences were statistically significant. The number of segmented neutrophils in the observation group was 1.38 greater than the control (differences were statistically insignificant), eosinophils were 9.6 greater and basophils were 12.3 greater, and differences were statistically significant. It was found that lymphopenia, stab neutrophils, segmented neutrophils, eosinophilia and basophilia were observed in the chronic phase of infection in the rabbits after 30 months.

A square duct with a 90-degree streamwise curvature is representative of complex flow domains. Such flow domains are encountered in the designs of fluids engineering systems, especially in the aerospace turbo-machinery components. Examples include the gas turbine engine axial compressor interstage spaces, where the rise in air pressure (and hence compressor efficiency) is dependent on suppression of turbulence. In the case of the centrifugal compressor, pressure rise in the U-shaped diffuser assembly where the suppression of turbulence is critical to the attainable pressure ratio. The results obtained from numerical calculations are analysed and discussed along with the corresponding hot-wire measurements and flow visualization result from a wind-tunnel of identical configuration. Calculations are implemented in four turbulent models, i.e. Standard k-e Module, Algebraic Stress Model (ASM), Non-linear Renormalization Group (RNG) - k-e Model and Differential Stress Model (DSM). The discretization up-winding scheme is the Quadratic Up-winding with Interpolation Kinematics (QUICK). Two high Reynolds number turbulent flows are investigated, with mainstream velocities of 12.3 m/s and 20.4 m/s, representing Re=3.56×105 and Re=6.43×105 respectively. Generally strong correlation between theory and experimental data are recorded. Further, as reported in similar studies, the turbulence modules that are formulated to account for turbulence anisotropy return results that more closely match experimental measurements. Uniquely for this configuration, a massive flow detachment is predicted along the convex wall at about the 90° position. Also, the core of the fluid flow is observed to shift from the outer to the inner areas of the bend in proportion to the secondary (recirculating) flow generated by the bend.

The themes of reduce, recycle, reuse are at the heart of the challenges that the global society of the XXI century is facing. At the same time, more than two-thirds of the world population lives in cities nominating the latters to play a central role in the near future. For this reason, the search for a methodology for the redevelopment of the historical urban fabrics appears today extremely interesting. Complexity, richness and stratification of the latters make them definitely the most convincing test to set a scientific strategy for the project of urban transformations. But stratification means complexity and complex are the phenomena that characterize the XXI century society. The only convincing way then for the analysis of these phenomena is that of the multi-disciplinarity. The proposed methodology is structured, thus, around a number of disciplines (Urban Morphology, Sustainability, Urban Regulation, Economic Evaluation and Urban Design) on which to set the reading of the urban fabric with special attention to the so called “urban voids” namely all those situations in which the tissue is interrupted due to slumping and demolitions. This aspect is very important because if, on the one hand, it is in these areas where key tissue analysis problems can be seen, on the other hand, it is always from these areas that the main urban, social and economical transformation opportunities can take boot. A Due Diligence of the “urban voids” organised in datasheets/base (for each area) concludes the analysis. The different disciplinary fields work then in a complementary way within a single methodological approach laying the scientific basis for the interventions of urban regeneration within the historic fabric of Valencia. Abstract This research effort focuses on the atomization physics of liquid monopropellents emanating from a pintle-type injector at high-pressure conditions. These injectors are used extensively in liquid-fueled propulsion systems, such as rockets and diesel engines, and undersea vehicles and munitions. While extensive research has been conducted in the past on bipropellant fuel injection and atomization, limited literature exists on the understanding of atomization processes of monopropellant fuels in a pintle injector configuration for viscous fluids at elevated pressures. Therefore, in the current work, injection and subsequent atomization processes of a liquid monopropellant fuel are investigated as it is injected through a pintle injector in a stagnant environment using direct numerical simulations. The pintle injector consists of an annulus with an outer diameter twice the size of the inner diameter, and center pintle that throttles the fuel out of the injector. The theoretical and mathematical formulation to investigate these two-phase problems is based on the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension. A critical issue is the treatment of multi-scale liquid-liquid and gas-liquid interfaces, therefore, a state-of-the-art, high resolution, volume-of-fluid (VOF) interface capturing method is adopted to resolve the interfacial evolution. Surface tension is accommodated as a Dirac delta distribution function on the interface. The theoretical formulation outlined above is solved numerically using a finite volume method augmented by an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) technique, based on an octree spatial discretization to improve the solution accuracy and efficiency. As a first step, for model validation, we simulate water injection in the aforementioned geometry at a flowrate of 44.4 g/s in a stagnant chamber at 1 atm and room temperature conditions. Comparison of our results with experimentally measured sauter mean diameter and spray angle shows excellent agreement — both quantities are within 4.2% of the measured quantities. Next, Otto fuel II injection and atomization are studied to elucidate the atomization characteristics of the fuel in a pintle injector. The dynamic viscosity of the representative liquid monopropellant, Otto fuel II is 0.0044 Pa-s, density is 1232 kg/m3, and the surface tension at the gas-liquid interface is 0.03445 N/m. The operating conditions consist of p = 106.2 bar, T = 300 K, and inlet velocity u = 3.34 m/s, corresponding to a density ratio of 10, dynamic viscosity ratio of 212 and Weber number of 20 (based on gas density). Results indicate that a radially growing hollow cone spray film attached at the injector exit is formed. Instability waves are formed on the outer and inner surfaces of the cone that facilitates breakup. Once droplets are completely separated from the cone, they are convected to recirculation zones, thus interacting with the hollow cone and amplifying the instability waves to cause further breakup. Droplet size distributions and their time evolution are also calculated during the research effort to quantitatively characterize the atomization behaviors.
