Transportation is a problem that is constantly evolving but there are few places in the world that have the transportation problems of Southern California. Although there is a lot of competition for transportation the market for disabled accessible private transportation has a lot of room for growth in Southern California. This business plan purposes the creation of a private transportation service, Beach Transportation, in Southern Orange County which assists the elderly and handicap. The goal of our business will be to provide the highest quality transportation to those who require disability services or assistance at an affordable rate. This plan of starting small and in a focused market gives of room for future growth and expansion. The financial and technical feasibility help demonstrate the companies requirements for startup and revenue estimates. While Beach Transportation will have to work hard to create a customer base it should succeed due to establishing the business within a large target market and starting on low cost operations to allow the company to grow.

Resumo:
Modern transportation planning considers issues such as road congestion, pollution and mobility proactively. However, road safety is usually evaluated in a reactive manner only after the implementation of transportation plans, and when safety problems arise. Although this reactive road safety approach has been very effective, it is associated with significant costs on communities. Therefore, several researchers advocate a more proactive approach to road safety analysis. Several studies developed macro-level Collision Prediction Models (CPMs) that could assess the road safety in a proactive manner, and provide a safety planning decision support tool to community planners and engineers. However, these models have limitations as they do not target the safety evaluation of different goals of a typical city transportation plan. Therefore, the motivation for this research arises from the necessity of developing tools that could predict the safety effect of a typical city transportation plan such as changes in the transportation and transit network configurations, and ultimately could evaluate the safety estimates among alternatives of different transportation plans and policies. The main goal of this thesis is to develop a set of macro-level collision prediction models to investigate the relationships between various transportation and sociodemographic characteristics, and the overall roadway safety. The developed models consider the Poisson variations and the heterogeneity (extra-variation) on the occurrence of collisions and the spatial effects on the distribution of collisions caused by the similarity in environment and geography of the neighbouring sites. It has been shown that the goodness of fit improved with the incorporation of spatial effect. In this study, a set of zonal-level transit reliant and application-based collision prediction models were developed. Data from Metro Vancouver, British Columbia were used to develop models using a generalized linear modelling approach with a negative binomial error structure. Different transit-related variables were found to be statistically significant, namely bus stop density, percentage of transit-km traveled with regard to total vehicle-km traveled, percentage of commuters walking, percentage of commuters biking, and percentage of commuters using transit. The CPMs related total, severe, and property damage only collisions to the implemental aspects related to the goals of long-term transportation plans.

Pipelines have an important role in oil and its derivatives transportation, since they are the most effective way to transport high volumes through long distances. The motivation for this work is that a non negligible part of the final price for those products are due to transportation costs. Few authors have addressed this problem, with most of the previous work using integer programming techniques. This work analyses the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques, discrete event simulators and software frameworks for building automated planners that are able to deal with real-world oil pipeline transportation instances. The first contribution of this thesis is the specification of a new planning domain called PIPESWORLD. This domain is inspired by the oil pipeline transportation problem, and is defined in PDDL. Due to its original structure, the PIPESWORLD domain has been incorporated to the 4th International Planning Competition benchmark. Even being a simplification of the original problem, PIPESWORLD instances in the benchmark are challenging to state of art solvers. It is also shown that decision problems based on PIPESWORLD configurations are NP-Hard. The second contribution of this thesis is the PLANSIM opensource framework. This framework incorporates a search engine that may use several different strategies, and defines a structure that facilitates the construction of automated planners based on heuristic forward search that use discrete event simulators as the model for the process to be planned. The third contribution of this thesis is a PLANSIM instantiation that results in an automated planner able to deal with real-world oil pipeline transportation instances, called PLUMBER 2. The use of discrete event simulation techniques for the model of the system to be planned allows this model to be very close to the original problem. This, in conjunction with PLANSIM usage, facilitates the construction of planners that are able to cope with real-world instances.

First issue that this thesis tries to address is setting up a practical framework of foliated transportation network. Scope of this thesis limited to several cities in Sweden to illustrate that this organization can be set up and it can perform under corresponding regulations. Beside the possibility of performance it was of high importance to consider its positive effects on whole network factors from both social and industrial perspectives. For this purpose a comparison between network results for different truck fill rates carried out but practical use of results is completely dependent of the stakeholder who is going to utilize them.

Retailers must coordinate inbound shipments from a large number of vendors. In order to manage capacity, retailers need to have a system to prioritize inbound loads with capacitated carriers. This practice creates a constraint when the number of loads exceeds the capacity of committed carriers due to seasonality and consumer shopping behaviors. A prioritization mechanism needed to be developed to support decision making for the selection of loads when capacity is constrained. This research applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process to define prioritization logic for each inbound load and solved a Knapsack model to optimize the assignment. This decision-making model allows the retailer to properly assign load priority based on company objectives. Further, opportunities were found to optimize load priority by up to 8.3 percent as compared to the current assignment. Similar retailers can leverage this research not only to prioritize inbound loads but also to prioritize other decisions such as which initiatives to pursue.

Today waste management has entered a new stage. Since wastes still contain natural materials and energy that can be extracted, it should be treated in effective ways, for example, for energy recovery or material recycling. Many countries and the municipalities have therefore made waste treatment strategies in accordance with for example, EU directives or governmental regulations. In such circumstances, Envac is one of waste management companies in Sweden, which collects different kinds of waste fractions through an underground pipe system by means of air pressure. In Hammarby sjöstad in Stockholm, currently organic waste, combustible waste, and newspapers are collected by the Envac’s system, however a cross contamination between organic fraction and newspapers has been observed. We therefore performed on-site waste transporting experiments in order to solve this cross contamination and suggest an optimum transporting condition which means that waste bags can be transported with high rate and acceptable condition to the terminal. From the previous study, bag quality and transporting speed were supposed to be the factors that affect the waste purity. Then on-site experiments were designed and carried out based on these factors. In the end, we proposed the optimum condition depending on the bag quality and clarified the causes of the cross contamination.

It is now widely accepted that human behaviour accounts for a large portion of total global emissions, and thus influences climate change to a large extent. Changing human behaviour when it comes to mode of transportation is one component which could make a difference in the long term. In order to achieve behavioural change, we investigate the use of a persuasive multiplayer game. Transportation mode recognition is used within the game to provide bonuses and penalties to users based on their daily choices regarding transportation. To easily identify modes of transportation, an approach to transport recognition based on accelerometer and gyroscope data is analysed and extended. Preliminary results from the machine learning tests show that the classification true-positive rate for recognizing 10 different classes can reach up to 95% when using a history set (66% without). Preliminary results from testers of the game indicate that using games may be successful in causing positive change in user behaviour.

The quantity of cell phone applications or mobile apps have seen an upsurge at an exponential rate in under a decade. Many have been created for a variety of industries, including transportation. The advent and subsequent commercialized implementation of near-instant transport by a middleman-type of app is now known as a Transportation Network Company or TNC. Examples of the more renowned TNCs are Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. In recent years, TNCs have cultivated a tremendous following, to the degree of taxicab desertion. Moreover, the massive success of TNCs led to expansion of its capacities into public transportation. The TNC’s expeditious popularity has garnered the attention of government and transit agencies. Without fail, TNCs can complement, supplement or compete with transit. However, sparsely has there been any deep discussion about a TNC potentially supplanting transit. The aim of this paper is to show how TNCs could replace public transportation in the United States if subsidized at the same level of transit agencies. Austin, Texas was analyzed as the case study city. A comparison of subsidization between Austin’s transit agency: Cap Metro, the local TNCs, and on a national aggregate level was conducted. The evidence herein clearly shows that TNCs are highly competitive when in revenue service operating at full capacity, potentially replacing public transportation.

Resumo:
We address a number of operational challenges encountered in two emerging types of practices in the procurement of truckload transportation services: collaboration and auctions. The main objective in these two types of procurement strategies is identifying and exploiting synergies between the lanes of a carrier's network. In shipper collaboration, we take the perspective of a shipper who collaborates with other shippers to seek synergy between his lanes and other participants' lanes. On the other hand, in procurement auctions, although we take the carriers' perspective in our work, a shipper tries to discover the carrier (or carriers) whose network has the most synergy with his lanes. The first part of the thesis concerns the solution of optimization problems arising in collaborative transportation procurement networks where a group of shippers comes together and jointly negotiates with carriers for the procurement of transportation services. Through collaboration, shippers may be able to identify and submit sequences of continuous loaded movements to carriers, reducing the carriers' need for repositioning, and thus lowering the carriers' costs. A portion of the carriers' cost savings may be returned to the shippers in the form of lower prices. We discuss optimization technology that helps identify repeatable, dedicated truckload continuous move tours with little truck repositioning. Timing considerations are critical to practical viability and are a key focus of our efforts. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms on randomly generated instances as well as on instances derived from real-world data. The second part concerns the pricing of transportation services offered by the trucking companies (carriers). We look at the bid determination problem faced by carriers in transportation procurement auctions where a shipper requests quotes from multiple carriers and purchases the services of the lowest bidder. The specific problem being studied is the bid valuation problem in the case where the carrier must place bids on multiple lanes simultaneously. We model the problem as a stochastic optimization problem and propose a coordinate search algorithm for solving this problem. Then, we conduct a simulation study to demonstrate the positive impact of the approach on carrier profits.

An increasing need to find alternatives to fossil fuels, and a growing awareness of the global warming effect has resulted in substantial research and development on biofuels. Biofuels are being considered a potential substitution of petroleum based fuels in the transport sector. With this increasing interest in biofuels comes the need to establish the environmental effect of the fuels. Results from several life cycle assessments reviewed in this report show that there are some benefits of biofuels in global warming impact compared to conventional fuels. How great this benefit is varies between the studies. Differences in critical issues such as allocation, carbon sequestration, and fertilizer use have significant impact on the results of the life cycle assessments. There is a lack of studies dedicated to investigating other environmental areas. The studies that have, show little consistency in their results, but indicate an increase of damage in categories such as acidification and eutrophication. No consistent results were shown on impact categories such as human toxicity potential or photochemical smog.Second generation fuels are claimed to be more sustainable than first generation fuels. There are many different types of second generation fuels being developed. Research and Development have resulted in technologies such as hydrolysis, pyrolysis, gasification and hydrothermal upgrading . Technology challenges and high costs still exist with these technological solutions, the second generation bio-fuels being 2-3 times more expensive than conventional fuels. Most of the second generation fuels are in their pilot phase, but several successful pilot projects exist for both hydrolysis and gasification. Gasification to produce bio-fuels is especially promising. The company Choren, who uses this technique, is planning to produce and sell their products in 2007. One of the main products of the company is Fischer-Tropsch (FT) diesel.A life cycle assessment on a second generation biofuel was performed. This was done by doing a Hybrid analysis on a Fischer- Tropsch diesel following the gasification route. The Hybrid analysis consists of a foreground and background system. The foreground system comprises important processes in the fuels lifetime. This includes biomass production, transport, production and use of the fuel. The background system contains economic data taken from the Norwegian background. The aim of the LCA is to compare the environmental effects of a second generation biofuel with first generation biofuels, and the impact category chosen in the impact assessment is global warming potential. The results of the work show that the global warming impact throughout the life cycle of the biofuel is 39 eq g/km. This proves to show a considerable reduction in the category, compared to both conventional diesel and average values of first generation biofuels. This implies that Fischer –Tropsch diesel is a more sustainable transport solution, yet more work is suggested to be taken on investigating the overall environmental impact of both second generation and first generation biofuels. .

This thesis is made upon a request from Cargosafe Systems., where the overall goal is to develop a motion based Data-logger. The project initiated by Cargosafe is developed in collaboration with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology(NTNU). To be able to collect sensor data from motion sensors from user defined placement, it is favourable that the unit is emancipated from cabling and a predefined environment. The thesis is the development of the stand-alone datalogger and tools. The datalogger is based on ``off-the-shelf'' hardware, own made hardware and software developed during the project. In order to produce reliable data, basic understanding of limitation, functionality, calibration and issues regarding motion sensors are presented. The information presented will act as a guideline when designing this type of devices. It is also important to regard these issues due to real tests, to ensure correctness of sampled data.As for now, the datalogger will act as a tool for collecting sensor data, and the collected data are post-processed on a computer. This to reduce load on the unit, and receiving the RAW measurement makes it possible to study the data without loss of information. Custom made C code is used as framework providing the necessary functionality. JavaScript is used for the graphical user interface(GUI).The solution developed in this thesis is now a usable platform for collecting motion data and store these to portable memory. Logging to memory makes it possible to analyse the data after the test have been conducted. The datalogger is battery-operated with long runtime and large data space making it useful for collecting motion from sensors. An effort is made to minimize errors caused by environmental disturbance and errors located in the sensor itselfThis is a solution to a stand-alone datalogger based sensor fusion system, which is simple, reliable and robust for motion based measuring. Currently, motion sensor platform are created in a variety of applications, but seldom as a total system with local storage capability and battery operated. This add flexibility and ease of use as the device can be mounted at location needed by the user. Here a solution to a datalogger in a small package, with modularity on a platform with a 8-bit controller in combination with high frequency and large program memory in a compact package. Following a simple design with replaceable sandwich approach this system is based on a small number of low-cost components. Its robust performance is achieved by using simple but reliable software.

This dissertation includes three essays on Transportation Economics, which studies two important questions in Transportation Economics: first, what are the effects of public investment in transportation infrastructure and provision of transportation goods? and second, how the market mechanism can improve the provision of transportation goods? Chapter one and two address the first question and chapter three addresses the second question. In the first chapter, using disaggregated data on highway construction projects from the California Department of Transportation from 2001 to 2013 and matching project locations with traffic data, I investigate the effect of highway construction projects on reducing congestion. The average effect of spending per mile of highway on both average speed and the traffic flow for the affected highway segments is positive. The increase in speed for morning and evening peak hours is between 0.30-0.45 mph, which accounts for 20 thousand saved hours per day. The reduction in travel time alone accounts for a $1.06 billion benefit over a 30-year period. This amount is equivalent to 60 percent of the total project cost and does not include the reduction in vehicle accidents, travel time reliability, and the effect on users of alternative routes. In the second chapter, I empirically investigate the effects of highway lane closure due to construction activity on user cost. I use data from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) on locations and times of lane closures. These data are matched with disaggregated traffic data on hourly traffic speed and flow for each day for most traffic detectors over California highways. I then estimate a fixed effect model of the effects of lane closures on hourly average speed and hourly traffic flow. The results show heterogeneous effects of lane closures on different hours of the day. With most closures occurring over night, between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., I find a reduction in average speed between 4.5 and 2 mph and an average reduction in the traffic flow of 258 vehicles per hour. I find social costs of lane closures to motorists that are well below the lane late reopening penalties imposed by Caltrans. In the third chapter, I investigate the effect of the SFpark project, a parking experiment on drivers' behavior that was conducted from April 2011 to May 2013 in San Francisco. Using hourly data on occupancy rates of on-street parking, I estimate the responsiveness of commuters to price changes at the block level that vary across locations and time of day. I use a fixed effects model to estimate the elasticity of the occupancy rate with respect to price changes. Moreover, I employ a regression continuity design (RDD) to estimate the effect of different price changes on demand. The elasticities range between -0.13 to -0.44 and vary by time of day and level of occupancy rate.

This thesis investigates the impact of transportation — the phenomenon of “being miles away” while receiving a narrative — on audience response. The poetics of narrative reception within the Homeric epics are described and the correspondences with the psychological concept of transportation are used to suggest the appropriateness and utility of this theory to understanding audience responses in and to the Iliad and Odyssey. The ways in which transportation complements and extends some concepts of narrative reception familiar to Homeric studies (the Epic Illusion, Vividness, and Enchantment) are considered, as are the ways in which the psychological theories might be adjusted to accommodate Homeric epic. A major claim is drawn from these theories that transportation fundamentally affects the audience’s interpretation of and responses to the narrative; this claim is tested both theoretically and empirically in terms of ambiguous characterization of Odysseus and the Kyklōps Polyphēmos in the ninth book of the Odyssey. Last, some consideration is given to the ways in which the theory (and its underlying empirical research) might be extended.

Since a young age, I have been interested in bicycling as a form of fun and fanciful recreation, but it wasn’t until the summer of 2011 that a serious shift occurred in my understanding of the bike as more than a mere machine. A spontaneous 700-mile journey redefined my relationship with travel, transcended my notions of transportation, and enabled me to better mediate myself within my environment. In writing about these experiences, I hope to offer some insight into how American culture currently frames transportation and how I hope the construction of a bike positive culture can instill social, environmental, and political change. Concurrently, I created a pin-up style bicycle calendar featuring enthusiasts from the Claremont Colleges to foster a sense of community around bicycling and inspire riders and non-riders alike to further explore their ‘bicyxuality’. Intermingling this nonfiction piece with a thoughtful reflection on the BIKEurious calendar project, this paper serves to explain my creative undertakings and, ultimately, call into question the hierarchy of transportation in America today.

Transportation is one of the most frequent problems in the business world. The major feature of the problem is that there are many warehouses and many delivery places. The objective of solving this problem is to find the amount of goods that should be sent from each warehouse to each customer while minimizing cost.Unfortunately, understanding the process and interpreting the results are not easy tasks. The method is very complex. The result is in the form of a table. We might say that it is not a friendly user-interface.In this thesis, we will create an application which uses a window as an interface, and uses minimal storage.Borland C++ v.4.0 is chosen to handle the implementation, and Borland Object Windows (class) Library for C++ v.2.0, OWL, is used for the interface. Therefore, this application operates on Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, but not on DOS.

One's way of travel dictates one's perception of the surroundings; People's mode of transportation has also evolved greatly throughout the ages. From foot traffic to carriages, to cars and trains, we tend to travel in faster paces, on increasingly linear paths, and with less freedom to wander. In my opinion, it is starting to become difficult to appeal to this emerging group of moving spectators with traditional ways of building. In my thesis, I explore ways to design buildings that focus on creating perspectival images for the moving spectators who are traveling on modern transportation.

The thesis is concerned with road transportation of fuel. In theoretical part there are described the legal clauses that are related to this issue. The most detailed regulations can be found in the European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (so called Agreement ADR). Hence the biggest part of the theoretical section is devoted to these regulations. Instructions for transportation of diesel and petrol have been chosen from this international agreement and explained. Practical part deals with particular carrier of fuel - company Petrotrans s.r.o. Standard of service is compared according to several different customers, established demands on safety of fuel transportation are decribed and security of consumption tax in international fuel transportation is analysed.

The aim of this research is to analyze the transport system and its subcomponents in order to highlight which are the design tools for physical and/or organizational projects related to transport supply systems. A characteristic of the transport systems is that the change of their structures can recoil on several entities, groups of entities, which constitute the community. The construction of a new infrastructure can modify both the transport service characteristic for all the user of the entire network; for example, the construction of a transportation infrastructure can change not only the transport service characteristics for the users of the entire network in which it is part of, but also it produces economical, social, and environmental effects. Therefore, the interventions or the improvements choices must be performed using a rational decision making approach. This approach requires that these choices are taken through the quantitative evaluation of the different effects caused by the different intervention plans. This approach becomes even more necessary when the decisions are taken in behalf of the community. Then, in order to understand how to develop a planning process in Transportation I will firstly analyze the transport system and the mathematical models used to describe it: these models provide us significant indicators which can be used to evaluate the effects of possible interventions. In conclusion, I will move on the topics related to the transport planning, analyzing the planning process, and the variables that have to be considered to perform a feasibility analysis or to compare different alternatives. In conclusion I will perform a preliminary analysis of a new transit system which is planned to be developed in New York City.

The overall objective of this research is to study the impacts of technology improvement including fuel efficiency increment, extending the use of natural gas vehicle and electric vehicles on key parameters of transportation. In the first chapter, a simple economic analysis is used in order to demonstrate the adoption rate of natural gas vehicles as an alternative fuel vehicle. The effect of different factors on adoption rate of commuters is calculated in sensitivity analysis. In second chapter the VMT is modeled and forecasted under influence of CNG vehicles in different scenarios. The VMT modeling is based on the time series data for Washington State. In order to investigate the effect of population growth on VMT, the per capita model is also developed. In third chapter the effect of fuel efficiency improvement on fuel tax revenue and greenhouse emission is examined. The model is developed based on time series data of Washington State. The rebound effect resulted from fuel efficiency improvement is estimated and is considered in fuel consumption forecasting. The reduction in fuel tax revenue and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as two outcomes of lower fuel consumption are computed. In addition, the proper fuel tax rate to restitute the revenue is suggested. In the fourth chapter effective factors on electric vehicles (EV) adoption is discussed. The constructed model is aggregated binomial logit share model that estimates the modal split between EV and conventional vehicles for different states over time. Various factors are incorporated in the utility function as explanatory variables in order to quantify their effect on EV adoption choices. The explanatory variables include income, VMT, electricity price, gasoline price, urban area and number of EV stations.

This thesis approaches the evolution of the Brazilian railroad mesh and the impact of this modal of transportation to an important company in the supplies of Diesel and Gasoline to the Bases of Distribution located in the South of Brazil. The relevance of this study is justified due to the approval of Law 9.478 - Law of the Oil - that broke the monopoly of Petrobras in this sector, transferring to oil companies the spatial and volumetric management of their oil inventories. On the other hand, the study contributes for the knowledge of the incipient Brazilian railroad mesh, privatized in 1996, and becoming increasingly important giving the necessity of adding value, efficiency and security to the fuel transportation. The objective of the present study is the evolution of railroad mesh and the impact of this transportation modal on Gasoline and Diesel safety stocks handled by an important oil company and its relationship to the costs of transportation related to the risks and unpunctuality still prevailing in the railroad system.

Regional transit agencies are ineffective at meeting many of the basic transportation needs of a clustered "Study Area" of low-income Atlanta neighborhoods. For transit dependant residents in the Study Area, getting to the grocery store or to suburban job centers, for example, is difficult or impossible. This exploratory thesis approaches transportation access problems in these neighborhoods from a community-based perspective. In response to the ineffectiveness of regional transportation agencies, this thesis asks, "Can low-income neighborhoods create their own solutions to their unique transportation problems?" In order to answer this question, a community transportation planning process was conducted, three case studies were collected and analyzed, and potential solutions were forwarded. In the end, these neighborhoods have the ability to alleviate many of their transportation problems through primarily organizing their existing assets. A proposed Community Transportation Organization (CTO), with accountability to local residents and expertise to implement transportation projects, could help organize these assets and produce needed services. The community transportation planning process and case studies uncovered that the CTO should organize the following services: a jitney service to the grocery store, neighborhood carpools to suburban job centers, and jitney supplements to troubled bus routes.

This research project was developed to explore and find an explanation of why Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has been eliminating bus lines and increasing the fares charged to its patrons. It will also explain why MARTA plans to eliminate more bus lines in the future. A case study analysis approach was used to analyze data gathered and survey research was administered to collect the public’s opinion and demographics. It examines the thought process put into the major changes the MARTA is continuously undergoing. Equity in public transportation covers a variety of inequalities in forms of fare inflation, bus stop and route elimination, and service taxes charged to both Fulton and Dekalb Counties. MARTA is funded by a 1 percent service tax that is paid by residents in Fulton and Dekalb Counties and the fares paid by its clientele. MARTA does not receive any federal funding. The MARTA board has made the decision to eliminate several bus routes and stops, and increase fares simultaneously. The adverse effects impact many people, more specifically people of color. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that MARTA is a primary means of transportation for many of the residents not only in Fulton and Dekalb Counties, but Clayton, Cobb, and Gwinnett as well. MARTA is becoming less accessible, and the fare is becoming more and more unaffordable for its patrons.

This paper assesses the value of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the transportation forecasting, planning, and execution processes for truckload (TL) and less than truckload (LTL) services. The results show that the value of RFID in transportation highly varies according to the sub-process and the player which are considered. The value in forecasting and planning is high for consignees and TL carriers, but low for shippers. For the execution process, the value is high for consignees, moderate for shippers, low for TL carriers and potentially high for LTL carriers. Fundamentally, the common value that RFID can bring to each player is labor cost reduction, obtained by automation of dock and clerical activities, and better service in tracking and reconciling, thanks to accurate and up-to-date information. The potential for dramatic improvement in transportation through RFID exists. Achieving such improvement will be possible only if information sharing rules, such as those espoused by Collaborative Transportation Management (CTM), and well formalized procedures are implemented. RFID can give to CTM invaluable "raw material", while CTM can enable the transportation players to fully take advantage of this material.

Climate change is a hot topic today. It is important for companies to take

responsibility for the environment. For companies it is also important to

communicate their environmental efforts to its customers.

The aim of this study is to analyze how transportation companies communicate their

environmental efforts on the web. Europe’s largest transportation companies as well

as Asian and North American airlines are studied. Companies’ websites were

examined and evaluated on several criteria.

The study surprisingly showed that a lot of companies did not have any external

communication due to unavailable websites. There are significant geographical

differences in how companies communicate green.

Many transportation companies provide environmental information on their websites

however they need to be more convincing in doing so.

Morales, Juan Carlos. "Planning Robust Freight Transportation Operations". Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14107.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This research focuses on fleet management in freight transportation systems. Effective management requires effective planning and control decisions. Plans are often generated using estimates of how the system will evolve in the future; during execution, control decisions need to be made to account for differences between actual realizations and estimates. The benefits of minimum cost plans can be negated by performing costly adjustments during the operational phase. A planning approach that permits effective control during execution is proposed in this dissertation. This approach is inspired by recent work in robust optimization, and is applied to (i) dynamic asset management and (ii) vehicle routing problems. In practice, the fleet management planning is usually decomposed in two parts; the problem of repositioning empty, and the problem of allocating units to customer demands. An alternative integrated dynamic model for asset management problems is proposed. A computational study provides evidence that operating costs and fleet sizes may be significantly reduced with the integrated approach. However, results also illustrate that not considering inherent demand uncertainty generates fragile plans with potential costly control decisions. A planning approach for the empty repositioning problem is proposed that incorporates demand and supply uncertainty using interval around nominal forecasted parameters. The intervals define the uncertainty space for which buffers need to be built into the plan in order to make it a robust plan. Computational evidence suggests that this approach is tractable. The traditional approach to address the Vehicle Routing Problem with Stochastic Demands (VRPSD) is through cost expectation minimization. Although this approach is useful for building routes with low expected cost, it does not directly consider the maximum potential cost that a vehicle might incur when traversing the tour. Our approach aims at minimizing the maximum cost. Computational experiments show that our robust optimization approach generates solutions with expected costs that compare favorably to those obtained with the traditional approach, but also that perform better in worst-case scenarios. We also show how the techniques developed for this problem can be used to address the VRPSD with duration constraints.
