The aim of this article is to examine the first two books in Jason Goodwin’s detective Yashim series and their Turkish translations in terms of “back translation”. Research subjects are The Janissary Tree (2006) and its Turkish translations by Çiğdem Öztekin dated 2006 and by Fethi Aytuna dated 2016 as well as The Snake Stone (2007) and its Turkish translations by Ali Cevat Akkoyunlu dated 2007 and by Fethi Aytuna dated 2017. The theoretical framework is based on the concepts of “foreign language creation”, a text describing a specific culture in a foreign language, and “textless back translation”, translation of a “foreign language creation” back into the language of that specific culture. Describing the Ottoman culture in English, Goodwin’s books can be considered as “foreign language creation” while their Turkish translations, which bring the culture back into its own land, can be considered as “textless back translation”. Depicting a foreign culture in his own language, thereby acting as a translator, the writer’s decisions are discussed within the choice of translation method in “foreign language creation”. Translating a “foreign language creation” back into Turkish, the translators’ decisions are discussed within the choice of translation method in “textless back translation”. In this respect, Ting Guo’s (2017) article entitled “On Foreign Language Creation and Rootless Back Translation–A Case Study of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” is taken as the reference point and the categories of translation methods are expanded with regard to textual findings. It is concluded that individual translation decisions of the Turkish translators support the idea that translators from the domestic culture might take the initiative to rearrange the source text information in their target text.

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used and assess the translation quality in the form of accuracy and acceptability assessment on respond-to-request speech acts of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune novel series written by Rick Riordan. This research used a qualitative-descriptive method whose data sources were the novel series and two raters who had aptitudes in assessing translation quality. The methods to collect and analyze the data were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The study found 11 translation techniques applied in translating the respond-to-request speech acts. They were establish equivalent, variation, borrowing, modulation, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, transposition, reduction, literal translation, and substitution. Dealing with the quality, the findings showed that most translations were accurate and acceptable. The majority of accurate translations used established equivalent technique. The less accurate translations applied modulation, amplification addition, discursive creation, literal translation and reduction whereas the inaccurate ones applied literal translation technique. Meanwhile, the majority of acceptable translations used establish equivalent and he less acceptable translations applied modulation, amplification addition, and discursive creation. Thus, this research proposes that the use of appropriate translation techniques is very important for the results of quality translation that is easily understood by the reader.

The study aims at filling the gap in the translation of Quranic verses concerning social etiquette[1]. Translating culture specific items (CSIs) can be challenging because certain elements have meanings particular to the culture and the language in which they appear. These meanings do not exist necessarily in other cultures. Translation strategies tend to solve translational problems by applying specific procedures to the translated text. The article at hand has studied the translation strategies used by seven translations of the Holy Quran relating to social etiquette, based on the selection of Quranic verses pertaining to social etiquette as followed by practicing Muslims through analyzing nine English translations from 1930 to 2009. It is found that the dominant translation strategy is the literal translation, with 89% of all strategies in preference to other strategies such as free translation, neutralization, paraphrasing, lexical creation, and adaptation.[1] Eittquette is defined as “a set of customs and rules for polite behaviour, especially among a particular class of people” Collins (2022).

The article is devoted to the problem of translating individually author’s neologisms from Polish into Ukrainian, based on the neologisms presented in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel «Ostatnie życzenie». These neologisms are the names of mythical creatures, in other words, creatures included in A. Sapkowski’s bestiary. The typology of the mentioned individually author’s neologisms according to the way of their creation is presented. Most of these neologisms are the result of application of the morphological way of word formation, neologisms-borrowing, semantic neologisms are also presented. The methods of translation of neological names of mythical creatures by three authors of Ukrainian translations of the novel has been analysed . It had found that different translators in certain cases choose different ways of translating names-neologisms, creating Ukrainian analogues-neologisms, selecting neologisms-borrowings or using common Ukrainian lexemes . Such a practice deserve to exist . However, the translator must adhere to a certain chosen translation strategy, giving to the reader the opportunity to navigate in the semantic and grammatical motivation of Ukrainian equivalents in foreign individually author’s neological names. In the analyzed translations, in our opinion, S. Legez successfully coped with this translation task, he most fully used the arsenal of methods of translating neologisms, in most cases preserving the models of neologism creation used by A. Sapkovsky. Ryabchuk tried to convey the meaning of the names of mythical creatures as clearly as possible for the Ukrainian reader, but this sometimes caused quite distant from the original ideas about the described creatures. In the translations of the names of mythical creatures in the text of N. Mykhailivska, G. Syneoka the desire to recreate fantastic realities by Ukrainian linguistic and literary expressive means is seen. It seems that this choice of Ukrainian equivalents, which are tracings or approximate translations, somewhat neutralizes the mystical coloring of the names of the creatures, felt in the original text.

This research aims at mapping out the translation techniques applied in translating sarcasm expressions and describing the impact of translation techniques toward the translation quality in terms of the accuracy aspect. This descriptive qualitative research used documents (i.e. subtitle of television series The Big Bang Theory and its translation in bahasa Indonesia) and informant (i.e. raters) as the data sources. To collect the data, the methods that were applied are document analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). As a result, there are 15 translation techniques applied by the translator in translating the sarcasm expressions. The application of appropriate translation techniques extremely affects the translation quality. The translator tends to apply established equivalent in dealing with sarcasm expressions. Consequently, the sarcasm expression translations tend to be rendered accurately. Meanwhile, reduction, discursive creation, literal techniques tend to produce less accurate and inaccurate translation.

Abstract Our study presents a comparative analysis of selected texts from several translations of Queneau’s Exercices de style: the Romanian version (a collective work coordinated by Romulus Bucur), the English version (Barbara Wright) and the Italian one (Umberto Eco) that illustrate the variable degrees of difficulties in translating. The analysis is meant to confirm our research hypothesis: though disruptive and often hardly surmountable, translation constraint does not stifle translator’s creativity or his fidelity toward the original style; on the contrary, it stimulates the translational process and fosters the rewriting-creation.

This study aims to describe the techniques and methods of translating expressive speech act in the subtitle of Paradise Kiss, which was translated by Island Fansubs. To analyze the data of this study using glossing techniques and translational equivalents. Based on the results of the study, it was found that there were 6 types of Japanese expressive speech act. The types of expressive speech act found were then translated using 8 types of translation techniques, amplification, discursive creation, established equivalent, generalization, linguistic amplification, literal translation, particularization and reduction. Expressive speech act translation techniques are dominated by linguistic amplification. Finally, there are 4 types of translation methods, word for word translation, idiomatic translation, free translation and communicative translation. The translation method is dominated by the free translation method.

Qur'an Karim dan Terjemah Artinya published by Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta is one of the al-Qur'an translations in Indonesia. The work has characteristics that distinguish it from other translations. The translation tried to bring the meaning of Quranic verses ignoring literal meaning and looking for its equivalent in Bahasa Indonesia. This research is focusing on the verses of the creation of man with a question about the form and style of the translation of these verses. This study uses the theoretical framework of ḥarfiyyah and tafsīriyyah translation, as well as the theory of interpretation patterns in 'Ulūm al-Qur'ān. This study found that the translator uses two translation methods, the ḥarfīyyah, and tafsīriyyah translation methods. Sometimes a verse was translated with a shorter or longer Bahasa Indonesia sentence to clarify the meaning of the verse. The translation of the Qur'an is also considered as an interpretation in a limited version so that the translator has a style in translating the verse. The translation style used is the adabī-ijtimā'ī style with a language approach because the translator uses straightforward language in translating the verse.

The present research deals with some questions of translating B. Okudzava's poetry into Polish. It is emphasized that any translation is affected by the providing and receiving culture, and a translator while translating takes a special place in the creative act because s/he is the recipient of the original text. The article focuses on a well-known Polish translator E. Cheh's translations. He translated not only Okudzava but the works of other famous Russian authors ( e. g. Solzhenitsin, Stroganov, Koliada, Vysotsky, etc.). The article attempts to answer the question how the translation modifies under the influence of different factors which expression depends on the peculiarities of translator's understanding and who being culturally determined also influences the translation. Translation transformations in E. Cheh's creation tend to be of two types: replacement and addition. Elimination is less significant. Transformations of meaning in translations are less or more determined by the translator's cultural peculiarities of a certain national cognitive space.

Each translator’s ideology will be formed differently due to his different time background and social environment, which will have an influence on their translation process. When translating the same work, the translator’s understanding of the original text will be different. Based on Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory and taking Shakespeare’s Hamlet translations in China as an example, this paper makes a comparative study of the translation styles of Zhu Shenghao and Sun Dayu. The translation styles of the two famous translators are different. The former is more prosaic, while the latter is more poetic. Starting from the translator’s life experience and social background of translation creation, the paper discusses the different influence of ideology, poetics and patronage on the two translator’s translation process through the analysis of specific examples.

This study deals with word formation and translation of neologisms in dystopian literature on the example of Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World and its Croatian translation. Its aim is to provide an insight into lexical innovation in dystopias and their translations by relying on Millward’s (2007) theory of dystopian neology. Based on Millward’s theoretical model, the study hypothesizes that coinage is the least frequent, and derivation the most frequent word formation process among source text neologisms. The third hypothesis states that literal translation and lexical creation are the most productive translation procedures. The research consists of extracting source text neologisms and their translations and analyzing the employed word formation processes and translation procedures. The findings show that compounding is the most prolific creation process in source text neologisms, while coinage and conversion are not used at all. The extracted neologisms are mostly rendered through literal translation and borrowing.

Objective: This paper provides a theoretical-reflective study of knowledge translation concepts and their implementation processes for using research evidence in policy and practice.Results: The process of translating research into practice is iterative and dynamic, with fluid boundaries between knowledge creation and action development. Knowledge translation focuses on co-creating knowledge with stakeholders and sharing that knowledge to ensure uptake of relevant research to facilitate informed decisions and changes in policy, practice, and health services delivery. In Brazil, many challenges exist in implementing knowledge translation: lack of awareness, lack of partnerships between researchers and knowledge-users, and low research budgets.Conclusions: An emphasis on knowledge translation has the potential to positively impact health outcomes. Future research in Brazil is needed to study approaches to improve the uptake of research results in the Brazilian context.

The process of translation is not as easy as it seems. In fact, it is much harder. The translation result must fulfill certain criteria namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. During the process of translation, the translator surely encounters some difficulties or barrier. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the students’ strategies in overcoming the translation difficulties. The method of the research was a descriptive case-study. The subject of the research was 10 students of English Education Department at Universitas Majalengka. The data was collected from the translation test, questionnaire, and interview. Most of the data analysis of this research was conveyed in non-statistical analysis. However, the researcher provided data to see the percentage and frequencies to support the research. The results showed that the students encounter difficulties in 1) translating words that are not in dictionary; 2) translating ambiguous words; 3) translating long sentences; 4) translating phrases; 5) translating complex sentence; and 6) translating idioms. In translating idioms, 50% used literal translation, 30% used discursive creation, and 20% used established equivalence. In translating ambiguous words, 90% used modulation, and 10 % used literal translation. In translating phrases, 40% used reduction, 20% used discursive creation, 10% used established equivalence, and 30% used generalization.

While numerous studies have explored the methodologies of professional translators, less attention has been paid to how translation students, particularly those new to the field, navigate the complexities of translating cultural texts. This study addresses a significant gap in translation pedagogy, focusing on how advanced translation students navigate the complexities of cultural text translation, an area often overlooked compared to studies on professional translators. Employing a qualitative research design, the study analyzed the translation strategies of five advanced students tasked with translating culturally rich texts from Indonesian to English. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyses of their translations. The findings reveal that 45% of the students’ strategies involved foreignization, which preserved cultural elements of the source text, while 30% used adaptation to recontextualize culturally embedded ideas for English-speaking audiences. Domestication was employed in 15% of cases to make the text more accessible, and explicit cultural explanations were used in 10% of the translations to elaborate on concepts with no direct equivalents. These results underscore the students’ conscious balancing of cultural preservation with the need for clarity. The study highlights the need to incorporate cultural competence into translation education, focusing on teaching methods that help students handle cultural nuances effectively. These findings offer valuable quantitative and qualitative insights that can inform the creation of culturally sensitive translation programs and enhance intercultural communication.

This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on specialized translation, using ChatGPT as the primary tool. Employing an empirical-exploratory and mixed-methods approach, it analyzes the strategies and translation skills of 15 advanced students from the Translation Bachelor’s Program at UABC while translating specialized texts from legal, medical, and scientific fields. It also describes the post-editing process and techniques used to enhance terminological accuracy and cultural appropriateness. Participants translated and post-edited three specialized texts, complementing the process with the creation of terminological glossaries. A specialized rubric was used to evaluate translation quality, while Translog-II software measured efficiency and time spent on each task. The objectives were to analyze the translation process and strategies employed with ChatGPT in translating specialized texts, and to describe the post-editing techniques used by students in their final academic stage. Preliminary results show a significant improvement in the efficiency and quality of translations due to the use of AI tools, highlighting the positive impact of ChatGPT on the development of specific translation competencies. Students expressed a favorable perception of the experience, emphasizing the usefulness of these tools in facilitating and optimizing the translation process

Studies on the translations of the Qur’an into English are widely prominent. However, research in translating the emphasis in Qur’anic dialogue has not been given sufficient attention. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the procedures followed by Arberry in translating emphasis in Qur’anic dialogue considering the dialogue between God and His creation as an example. Arberry’s translation is selected because a non-Muslim translator writes it without prejudice and is widely respected among academics. The main aim of this paper is to investigate the procedures used by Arberry to translate the emphasis in Qur’anic dialogue. This is to find to what extent these procedures are successful in conveying the intended message of the emphasis used in the Qur’anic dialogue. To achieve this aim, different types of dialogue between God and His creation from Arberry’s translation will be selected for analysis and compared by al-Hilali and Khan’s. The analysis will not only rely on the linguistic aspects, as have most of its predecessors, but will also focus on cultural aspects. Venuti’s “domestication” and “foreignisation” strategies will be adopted as a framework in the analysis. This is to provide a more appropriate translation of emphasis in Qur’anic dialogue for both religious and non-religious readers.

Abstract Translation traces embrace a wide range of inheritance forms in cultural production practices. Pseudo-originals disclose a kind of literary creation pattern which is a partial or full cross-lingual plagiarism of a text by a predecessor or a contemporary from another language-culture. Well-known quotations in a foreign language are frequently employed by speakers or writers via impromptu translating or memory-based appropriation from an available translation. These translated quotations may well be imitated by text producers to derive a large number of variations in the target culture. Plagiarisms or borrowings are also seen in retranslations of great world classics. As two largely uncharted territories, indirect translation and back translation make translation traces too weak to be located. Research on the origins of translative memes, their morphology and typology of transmission as well as their mutative reasons may create a new area for Translation Studies.

Aletheia: The Truth of Philosophical Translation as a Translation of Thruth.An Encounter of Martin Heidegger, Paul Ricœur and Antoine BermanThe article analyzes the specificity of philosophical translations insofar as they generate a new meaning and present themselves as originals that must be retranslated. This goes against Ricœur’s conception of translation as a creation of comparable terms. We will show that philosophical translation consists in the creation of an incomparable term, which cannot be measured in terms of equivalence, adequacy or fidelity. All these terms correspond to a notion of truth understood as adequacy, therefore we operate a deconstruction of aletheia, the Greek concept for “truth”, in order to show that what we hold today to be the truth of translation has been the result of a translation. Through Heidegger’s reading of aletheia and through Berman’s account of the terms that name translation in Europe, we reinterpret the Roman philosophical translations as examples of traductio and we show, in the end, that by retranslating aletheia, the rules for the practice of translation change, allowing the latter to be guided by an ethical approach towards the otherness rather than by righteous fidelity and adequacy.

Research on collaborative translation has expanded in recent years, with a variety of terms such as community or volunteer translation being used to refer to these practices. This article focuses on the Traction project as an instance of artistic co-creation between professionals and non-professionals in opera, and it suggests that the Traction approach could be usefully utilised in the context of audiovisual translation and media accessibility. After an introduction to the challenges of 21st century opera and their quest for new audiences, the article discusses the concept of artistic co-creation. It also presents how opera co-creation is being assessed in Traction. The co-creation process and its evaluation are then related to translation and accessibility to propose artistic co-creation as a new approach to collaborative practices which can benefit both professionals and non-professionals.

Yu-kwangchung is not only an outstanding writer, poet and critic, but also a translator with rich translation experience, proficient in Chinese and western literature. In his long-term literary creation and translation practice, he has formed his own unique translation theory. Meanwhile, his translation practice has influenced his literary creation style and provided the impetus for his literary creations. This paper attempts to take Yu-kwangchung’s works as an example to study the Influence of Yu-kwangchung’s Translation on His Creation from the Perspective of the use of Function Words. The influence of translation on the translator's own literary creation has been discussed at home and abroad, such as Arthur Waley, Yan Fu and Fu Lei. However, most of these discussions focus on the macro level and lack of microscopic analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the influence of Yu-kwangchung’s translation on his own creation in order to add a more detailed case evidence for the impact of translation on literary creation. As mentioned above, he is an ideal sample for my research because he was a prolific writer and translator. The analysis in this paper is composed of three parts. The first one is Yu’s influence of translation upon his literary creation respectively the influence on the application of preposition. The second one is the influence on the application of conjunction, and the third is influence on the application of article. In addition, the influence of this kind of translation on creation may also change with the change of time, which is reflected in the fact that this influence become obviously weaker when it is far away from the time of translation works. Through comparative analysis, this paper concludes that Yu-kwangchung's translation has played a leading and inspiring role in his own literary creation, enriched the diversity of his literary works and improved the aesthetic value of his works. On the other hand, Yu-kwangchung graduated from the department of foreign languages of Taiwan university and served as the director of the Spanish department of Taiwan university from 1972, during which he translated a large number of foreign languages, including English and Spanish. During this period, his creation content was influenced by western literature, and then some western themes appeared, such as self-cut poems. The number of lines was also more flexible, a feature of western poetry that he applied to his own literary work. The influence of translation on Yu-kwangchung's own creation is clearly reflected in this paper, especially in the use of function words, because English is quite different from Chinese. From the perspective of cultural exchange, it is of profound significance to study this kind of influence, because it promotes the integration of different languages and cultures. According to the author, this case study is of great significance to the controversial issue of translation and creation, because the evidence has been strongly verified in Yu-kwangchung's translation and literary creation, More importantly, this paper makes some supplement to the research on the influence of translation upon literary creation in the micro field.

Foreign children’s literature has been translated in various target languages and the most translated stories are from the Bible. The uniqueness of this study is on the rhyming text translation. It is very challenging in translating rhyming text due to distinct features of orality, sociocultural context, lexical and grammatical issues. This paper aims at 1) exploring rhyme types found both in the source text and in the target text; 2) investigating the use of the translation techniques; 3) examining the translation shift; and 4) assessing the translation quality of the rhyming translated text. This is a descriptive qualitative study that applied the content analysis design. The collection of data is through focus group discussion, note-taking and quality translation (QT) rating instrument. Then data are analyzed using analyses of domain, taxonomy, and componential. The findings present 9 data of rhyme types identified in the source text and 10 data of rhyme types in the target text. Besides, there are 12 translation techniques frequently used. Furthermore, the translation shift exists in the translated text indicated by 34 data. Finally, the assessment of translation quality reveals the rates of three aspects of the parameter namely accuracy (2.22), acceptability (3), and readability (3) in which its overall score is 2.61. The overall score of the translation quality reveals that the translation meaningfully succeeds.

Adaptive machine translation is a technology that combines the advantages of machine translation and human-made translation in order to improve the efficiency of the subtitle creation process. This paper shows how adaptive machine translation helps translators in their work on creating subtitles. The main idea is that adaptive machine translation algorithms offer preliminary translation variants to the translator, which are then edited and refined by a human. At the same time, the algorithms take the specifics of subtitles into account, such as a limit on the number of characters and a limited time to read lines. Adaptive machine translation is an important tool for creating high-quality subtitles. It helps translators in their work by facilitating and speeding up the translation process, improving the quality and preserving the style of the original text.

This essay argues that the paths of translation intersect and form different configurations as one advances in it and in the study of it. It also proposes that translated literature belongs to the literary history of the language in which it appears and, therefore, should be part of the studies in that language and those literatures. It begins by comparing different translations of Horace’s Ars poetica, goes through the argumentation in philosophy of science about the preeminence of practice over theory, and states that translating poetry is writing poetry. It concludes by proposing that literary translation is a craft involving creation, criticism, and theory.

Three of the earliest extant Jewish exegetes, Aristobulus, Aristeas, and Philo, all state that King Ptolemy was responsible for a Greek translation of the Hebrew sacred writings. Scholarly discussion has focused on finding the historical kernel in these stories, or linking their creation to a particular event such as the official promulgation of an original or corrected Greek translation. The Letter of Aristeas is usually considered the most accurate version, in large part because it later was used as an introduction to the Septuagint. These discussions have overlooked the fact that in each case the basic plot is fine-tuned to suit each exegete's own ideas about how the Torah was written, how the text and its translation should be read and interpreted, and by whom. A comparison of the three versions reveals that each writer embellishes this bare-bones plot in a distinct manner. In particular, “historical” details are created by each writer that support the very exegetical endeavor he is undertaking. The story of the translation becomes a vehicle for creating all the components necessary to justify the exegete's role, from the creation of a unitary “Torah” out of the multiplicity of versions and stories to the motivation for the particular interpretative moves “demanded” by the very qualities of this Torah. Comparing the three stories gives us valuable insights into the self-perceptions of the exegetes and the emergence of what will become a standard model of text-author-exegete in Judaism.

Abstract A pipeline is a commonly used architecture in machine translation (MT). Statistical MT can require, for example, many computational steps during training and decoding which are best viewed as a pipeline. These pipelines can be tedious to construct and are error prone since little or no type checking is performed, and no clear interface is defined for a pipeline’s components. At times this can manifest itself as components requiring knowledge of how a preceding component’s output is formed in order to consume it. Moreover, collaboration and sharing of pipelines or components becomes difficult since the components themselves may need to be changed in order to be used by others. In order to alleviate these problems a specialised language has been designed called Pipeline Creation Language (PCL). PCL allows users to construct pipelines that have components with well defined and compatibility checked interfaces. Components can be defined in packages, so individual components or packages of components, including entire pipelines, can be shared and composed with others. PCL supports operators which allow components to be executed sequentially, in parallel, or conditionally.

The study presented in this article analyses the influence that translation has exerted on the work of Basque writer and translator Joseba Sarrionandia. This analysis shows that the interaction between his original works and his translations is bidirectional, and that the distinction between creation and recreation is much more confused that it can seem in the beginning. By means of intertextual references, rewriting of poems, variations or imitations of texts written by his predecessors, or even by composing translations without originals, Sarrionandia throws into question some of the notions of the modern discourse of translation, and suggests a new way of understanding literature and translation. His strategies aim to demonstrate that it is impossible to create from scratch, that each poet writes over the traces left by the poets he has read, and that each of his texts will necessarily be a conversion or a translation of the literary tradition he has inherited. Therefore, there is no original text, and each text is no more than a translation of a translation. However, the links and relations that each writer/translator suggests with regard to this literary tradition will be new and original, and it is in these new relations that the creating power of translation lies.

The article reconstructs three stages of A.F. Voeikov’s translation of Georgics by Virgil, undertaken by him “in competition” with the translations of the ancient epic poetry of A.F. Merzlyakov and N.I. Gnedich. Initially (around 1813), Voeikov translated the Latin poet in iambic 6-foot with cross-rhyming, largely focusing on the French translation of Jacques Delisle (1769), which was considered “exemplary.” But under the influence of S.S. Uvarov’s “polemics about hexameters,” Voeikov joined the winning point of view — about the priority of the transmission of the ancient epic by Russian dactylic hexameter, and reworked his translation, counting on success and imperial favor, similar to those that Gnedich’s Iliad won. But despite the intermediary efforts of V.A. Zhukovsky, Voeikov did not receive any royal favor. At the end of the 1810s for the third time he radically changes the strategy of his translation of Georgics, striving for equilinearity and refusing to look back at Delisle’s experience. This last edition is published from the archival manuscript in the Appendix to this work for the first time.

This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. It aims to determine the translation techniques used to convey the sexist attitudes to the target language and its impact for the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The data of this research are 141 utterances that are obtained from both male and female characters. Those data were collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. They were analyzed by using taxonomy, and componential analysis to see the cultural value. The result shows that there are 14 techniques which are applied in translating, those are; established equivalence, explicitation, modulation, pure borrowing, implicitation, paraphrase, generalitation, transposition, reduction, addition, discursive creation, particularization, compensation, and deletion. Furthermore, it reveals that the translation techniques determine the translation quality. Established equivalence results in the good quality of the translation. Meanwhile, the use of paraphrase produced a low quality translation in the target language. Moreover, the application of discursive creation results in non-sexist translation for two utterances.

This paper aims to describe translation techniques used in translating Indonesian Fables into English. The data is taken from bilingual fable books from five different publishers. The research uses purposive sampling technique and also comparative method to analyze the data. The finding shows that there are nine translation techniques used by translators namely equivalence, literal translation, discursive creation, borrowing, variation, transposition, modulation, reduction, and deletion. Equivalence is the most frequently used technique followed by literal translation. For further study, researcher may pay attention on the accuracy of the translation and readability of the translated text.

In the Middle Ages, interpreter was thought to be a poet, skilled in the art of composition; and an exegete, able to turn the enigmatic mode of the Scriptures into the human language. Medieval translation appertained to a hermeneutical performance, with the ‘modus inveniendi’ as its constituent part. This article aims at revealing the enigmatic mode of medieval translation in Cædmon’s ‘Hymn of Creation’. Cædmon, an unenlightened cowherd, miraculously acquired the gift to recite a Christian Song, which rendered the world ‘as a Dive work of Art’. Cædmon is re–creating the original texts by imposing his ‘enarratio poetarum’ upon the Story of Creation as manifest in the ‘Book of Genesis’, the Latin ‘Vulgate’. The novelty of the research lies in deciphering the ‘enarratio poetarum’ in Cædmon’s ‘Hymn of Creation’ as a transformation from rhetorical poetics to hermeneutics, from the ‘modus inveniendi’ to the ‘modus interpretandi’, so that the Cædmonian ‘artes poetriae’ becomes inseparable from exegesis. Most previous research1 focused on the poetic vocabulary, viz., the fusion of heroic Germanic idiom and Christian lore in the context of Anglo–Latin literature. Cædmon rendered the thirty one line of Genesis, the Act of Creation, into the nine–line ‘Hymn of Creation’, which embraces not only the Act of Creation, but adores the Creator by giving Him a variety of poetic names. By re–creating the text of the Scriptures Cædmon is becoming the ‘fidus interpres’ in the sense of faithful exegete.

The paper analyzed the problem of accessibility of content in other languages, it was found that many content may not be translated into the native language of users who want to access it, but at the same time there are many who want to help other users with this problem. The solution is a special information system that allows you to easily register and create your own translation, in which other users can participate, or join another already created one and help. As a result, the interested user can easily download the translation result and use it at his own discretion. The analysis of business processes for the creation and translation of the text was carried out. Based on this analysis, requirements for a future solution were developed. Business requirements were also identified. Among other things, a system use case model was developed and use case specifications were described. Lists with functional and non-functional requirements have also been developed. The functional model of the system was shown - algorithms: authorization, registration, password recovery, creating a new translation, generating a file with a new translation, generating a list of translations, managing users, viewing a translation, editing a translation text, checking the correctness of a translation, and moderating translations. A class diagram was developed, where you can see the main entities of the system and their relationships. A sequence diagram was also developed. The architecture of the information system was described. The system was implemented using the React.JS library and the Spring framework. The main processes of the system users were also described.

The article studies the translation of the Ancient Greek literature into Ukrainian as an important and historically conditioned process that influenced the translation tradition in Ukraine. The authors trace the history of translation dating from the period of Kyivan Rus to modern times by applying linguistic, chronological and thematic approaches. As a result of the conducted study the authors define main directions and trends of assimilation of the classical Ancient Greek literature by the Ukrainian context through translation in its cultural and historical dimension, as well as characterize the translations of the Ukrainian scientists and outline their contribution into the classical literature corpus formation. It has been revealed that in different historical periods, translated literature performed definite functions (it was used in religious worship, as the material for original literature creation, in intellectual discussions). Since the 19th century, there existed a tendency when translators (M. Zerov, I. Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, V. Svidzinskyi, P. Nishchynskyi, M. Rylskyi, G. Kochur, Borys Ten, M. Lukash, M. Moskalenko, A. Sodomora, etc.), guided by their own preferences, cultural trends, national needs, political attitudes, consciously chose original texts for translation, carried out scientific investigations and added commentaries to their publications, thereby creating a scientific discussion in the Ukrainian society. It was also found out that translations of Homer's works into Ukrainian led to the emergence of a certain translational tradition (the same phenomenon is observed in Western Europe), when Ukrainian translators developed a methodology that allowed them not only to convey the ideological and content component of the original poems, but also to reproduce the rhyming of ancient poetry. The paper concludes that modern translators from the Ancient Greek language continue to popularize ancient literature and the legacy of the holy fathers, thereby supporting the continuity of the Ukrainian school of translation.

Cultural knowledge is a key for successful communication. In translation and subtitle translation, transferring or delivering the meaning and sense of the source culture to the target culture is often deemed a challenge for translators and subtitlers. Despite few studies on Chinese to English translations of Culture Specific Items (CSIs) which mostly have focused on the preference of applying foreignization and domestication strategies, there is still a deficiency in the literature, particularly about the procedures in the Chinese to English translations of CSIs in films. Given the different textual status of cultural items in source and target cultural systems, this study adopted Newmark’s (1988) CSIs classification and Aixela’s (1996) strategies for translating CSIs. The aim was to explore the strategies used in Chinese to English translation of CSIs in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The qualitative findings revealed that orthographic adaptation, linguistic translation, synonymy, limited universalization, absolute universalization, deletion, and autonomous creation were used by the translators to translate the CSIs, while gestures and habits items were not used. There were also six combinations of strategies. The results of this study can be beneficial for translators, subtitlers, and screenwriters in conveying the cultural meaning and sense more effectively.

The article deals with the history of the first translations of Christian religious texts and prayers into the Udmurt language in Glazovsky Uyezd of Vyatka Governorate. Involvement in the study of archival documents from the funds of the Vyatka spiritual Consistory and Glazovsky spiritual Board allowed the author to describe in detail - chronologically accurately and thoroughly - the process of creating translations, to identify the authors of the translation of specific texts. In particular, it was established that at the initial stage there were no volunteers among the clergy of Glazovsky uyezd willing to engage in the compilation of translations. The spiritual Board turned to coercive measures and itself appointed translators from among the clergy who knew the Udmurt language, ordering them to appear for translation in Glazov. The first translation was performed jointly by priests N. Nevostruev, Z. Krotov, S. Anisimov and A. Babaylov ahead of events - even before receiving the list of texts assigned for translation. After receiving the list, the translation of the missing texts was carried out by the same persons individually, but only one of the translators sent his translation to the Glazov Board in time. In early July, translations from Glazov were sent to Vyatka. In the ecclesiastical Consistory the translations were checked and rewritten. As a result, the Synod was presented with a translation composed of two parts, one of which was performed by 4 priests together, and the other-alone by A. Babaylov. The study of the circumstances of the creation of the translation allowed to give answers to questions that remained unexplained for more than a hundred years, and to reveal new, previously unknown facts, including the previously unknown manuscript of the translation by N. Nevostruev and Z. Krotov.

The study aims to find out the reader-centred & author-centred translation of Ashtadhyayi of Panini, an Indian linguist of 5th century BC, who compiled the world oldest, shortest and ever first linguistic book in Sanskrit language focusing on all linguistic aspects, aiming at protecting the sounds of Vedas; the holy book of Hinduism. The linguistic importance of Sanskrit was firstly mentioned by William Jones during his famous address in India, whereas the linguistic phenomena were discussed by Ferdinand de Saussure in nineteenth century. The book is first translated into English in 1891by Sarisa Chandra Vasu with a large number of Sanskrit Words which gained a momentous fame in all the linguistic circles. Due to which Ashtadhyayi was studied widely by English professors and students illuminating their linguistic horizons by coining unique ambiguous precise 4000 rules under the name of ‘Sutra’. Just after this English translational creation of Ashtadhyayi a large number of translations were done by the native Hindu scholars and even by western Sanskritests. Therefore, a huge number of commentaries, studies and articles were written by European and native linguists and at the same time it was translated into other languages. The book and all its translations are available online. The purpose of this paper is to collect all the English translations of Ashtadhyayi throughout the history since 5th BC to the age of globalization and digitalization, then putting them into a translational categorization according to various kinds of translations finding out the most comprehensive and faithful translations among them and the types of translation strategies applied by the translators in translating this unique cryptic linguistic book.

The literary translation still becomes such of debating among several experts and researchers, especially at translation studies. The aim of this study was to find out what kinds of techniques of translation were applied in translating the poems of Maya Angelou, and how the appropriateness of techniques were applied by the students. Mollina & Albir’s classification of translation techniqueswas used as the primary theory in the analysis of the translation texts.This study was descriptive qualitaive and content analysis. The data were taken from text translations of two poems which consist of 550 data from 10 students as translators. The research findings revealed that14 techniques were used by students. The result showed that there were 14 translation techniques which were used, compensation, literal translation, modulation, linguistic amplification, discursive creation, linguistic compression, reduction, amplification, adaptation, transposition, borrowing, established equivalent, particularization, and description. The next finding showed that the appropriate techniques wereapplied at 69.3%. Meanwhile, inappropriate techniques were at 30.7%. The conclusion of this study was that students used the most at compensation and the lowest was description. The students mostly successful in applying appropriate technique at delivering messages, but were flub in recreating thepoetical aspect in Target Language. In some cases, this indicated deficiency in determining the equivalent expression in the target text. The suggestion for further researchers is to explore a similar study by investigating on figurative speech and poetical aspect at poetry translation.

Background:
This study aims to determine the translation techniques used by visually impaired translators in translating popular scientific texts. Visually impaired translators were used as the subjects of this study because when compared to sighted translators, visually impaired translators had a different way of doing translation activities. The difference in this performance is influenced using text-to-speech tools they use. Apparently, this phenomenon has not been discussed by various specialized translation research previously and by involving blind translators as research subjects directly, translation techniques can be expected to be identified naturally.
Methodology:
Using popular scientific texts in the field of psychology, two visually impaired translators were assigned to translate 24 sentences in a translation experiment. To analyze the data that was collected, the researchers used analytical techniques consisting of a domain, taxonomy, and componential analysis.
Findings:
Since they are too dependent on text-to-speech aids, visually impaired translators use a lot of literal and discursive creation translation techniques. The appearance of these two techniques in their translation implies that the resulting translation cannot match the context of the sentence. This happens because text-to-speech applies word-for-word reading.
Conclusion:
It is important for visually impaired translators to understand the weaknesses of their translation. Translators should minimize the use of literal and discursive creation translation techniques when translating popular scientific texts. One way is to improve their translation competence.

Abstract Interest in African literature and translation is relatively new; it mainly emerged in the 1990s with the postcolonial turn in translation studies, under the influence of the cultural turn, the polysystems theory and the “Manipulation School”. Many African writers describe themselves as intercultural translators; they hover over the following questions: Is it a form of selfdenigration not to use one’s mother tongue as a medium of literary creation? How can their literary creations account for their postcolonial experience in the languages of former colonizers? Can these languages render the specificities of their distinct cultural worldviews? The linguistic choice made by African writers is hence highly political because it involves a compromise that rests on power relations. Their writing often involves a sort of translation from Source Language (SL) to Target Language (TL) whether through ethnotextual mental translation or self-translation.

The paper discusses the development of a helper program "TypesetHelper", designed to facilitate the process of creating and translating comics. An analysis of functions of translation in modern society shows that translation, currently, is primarily a means of enabling communication between people who speak different languages. This applies, among other things, to such a specific niche as the translation of graphic novels, comics and manga. In the modern world, comics have become an integral part of popular culture, but in Ukraine, the culture of reading and translating comics is only at the stage of active formation. The purpose of this work is to create software that would facilitate the process of work with the inclusion of translated text in corresponding cleared illustrations. It is demonstrated that the existing software, including both general-purpose graphic editors like Adobe Photoshop and specialized programs for automatic recognition and translation of comics and manga, has disadvantages with respect to the problem being solved and can not be considered as a complete analogue of the software being developed. The functions that the program should perform include opening an image file, placing a text in a selected area, centering a text relative to a cloud, creating text layout, creating correct word division using automatic hyphenation methods, saving the image to a file. An analysis of possible methods of text layout when filling text clouds of various forms is given. The paper consider software design using the Unified Modeling Language (Use Case diagram, State Diagram, User Activity diagram) and its development using the C# programming language. Illustrations of the program operation process are given, which demonstrate its interface and examples of text division and layout using the selected methods. The developed helper program has practical value and can be used in comics and manga publishing houses, or for amateur translation. Keywords: text processing, comics, text layout, UML, C#.

There is an on-going debate as to the real value of translation: is it an art or a science? Is the translator engaged in genuine creation or is she merely transliterating the creation of someone else? In order to attempt to resolve this long-standing and thorny problem, this article examines the poet’s understanding of the “logos", the creative force of the word and the relationship which exists between the “signifiant" and the “signifié”. Extracts from poems by Alan Paton, Victor Hugo and Pablo Neruda serve to illustrate that poetic words not only transmit the poet’s experience but actually create it. If the poet is sensitive to the creative nature of language, as these two extracts suggest he should be, it follows logically that a good translator too must be aware of the degree to which language can create, and this perception must be implemented in the subsequent translation. Because only human beings and not machines possess sensitivity, it stands to reason that a machine is incapable of effectively translating the most emotional of literary genres: poetry. So as to illustrate this fact, this article compares and contrasts a computer-generated translation of Paul Verlaine's poem “Chanson d’automne" with three “human-generated” translations. In my own translation, comments and justifications are made as to the choice of a particular word or phrase proposed as translation. The conclusion is reached that translation implies a high degree of sensitivity towards the poet’s original intention as well as a collaborative process between poet and translator which results in an entirely new poem which involves as much, but different creativity as the original writing of the poem.

: The first translation of Freud published in Portugal appears to have been a version of the 1905 text Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie, which came out in November 1932 named Sexualidade.Published by the Ática Pressin a collection entitled Scientia Vitæ, the translator's name –Osório de Oliveira –was,surprisingly,displayed in a prominent position on the title page. A comparison between this translation, Freud's original and a French version by Blanche Reverchon, that had come out shortly before, shows that it was a case of indirect translation, which reproduced many of the characteristics of the intermediary version. Forexample, while Freud's original enables the reader to follow the thought processes behind his hypotheses and scientific conclusions, both of the translated texts are much less tentative. This paper explores the circumstances surrounding the production of this Portuguese translation at that moment, the translational options made, and the effect of both on the text's reception. Particular attention is given to the domain of lexis –creation of neologisms, terminological consistency and coherence –and modalization, and whether the terminological options caught on and were reproduced in subsequent translations and commentaries.

Abstract Transferring Culture in Translations - Modern and Postmodern Options — The characteristic elements of the modern theories of translation by Charles Baudelaire and Sigmund Freud are outlined and described in the context of the question of how differences in culture and understanding can be recognized and translated. Translations depend on a certain homogeneity (between the different sign systems used) which can be provided by the creation of meaning through language. The understanding, acknowledgement and creation of meaning is vital for translations. Both Baudelaire and Freud are quite aware of the relative value of such meaning. In postmodernist theories, translation becomes 'necessarily impossible.' Paul de Man's and Jacques Derrida's practical use of Walter Benjamin's text on translation indeed shows that they do not translate him. They do, however, adapt him to their own view and their specific meaning. More and different meanings can be detected in Benjamin, though, and the necessity for multiple, ambiguous, but not entirely arbitrary translations must be recognized. Only a meaningful, inventive combination of one's own and the other's positions can make cultural transfer and the acknowledgement and tentative understanding of otherness possible.

Abstract The paper engages the theme “Migration, multilingualism and T&I policies”. It provides a reflection on the concept of translation policy viewed through the lens of migration. This reflection emanates from research carried out on the policy context in the creation of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters in Australia. Current writing on translation policy (Gonzalez Nuñez and Meylaerts 2017, as a recent example) has tended to expand the coverage of this concept to embrace a number of aspects consistent with a socio-political view of the place of translation and translation policy, the latter seen as a precursor or a consequence of the former. The paper explores the dependency of policy on the context in which it is framed and considers the need for a more specific approach to the examination of the nature of translation policy as it not only relates to the rules, agency and practices but more importantly to the values inherent in particular instances or systems of translational communication. The paper utilizes examples derived mainly from the Australian context and will argue that the terminology itself used in the elaboration and implementation of translation policy requires considerable refinement before it can be applied to different temporal and cultural contexts. One example of this phenomenon is the concept of ‘minority’ or ‘minorities’ which is not used in Australia in this context and is, in turn, a reflection of the values ascribed to a consideration of either migrant groups or allophone groups within a society. The paper argues for clearer distinctions between policies about permitting or mandating translation and policies which impinge upon the conduct of translation since the source of authority and therefore policy-making, resides with different actors.
