Signals with multiple transients are often encountered with much noise in engineering. The transient feature extraction has always been the key issue for signal analysis. A new signal de-noising method combining sparse representation and Morlet wavelet basis is proposed for signal de-noising and feature extraction. Simulation study concerning multiple transients signal shows the effectiveness of this method in transient feature extraction. The efficiency of this de-noising method is also verified by its application to extract fault signature for gearbox.

Abstract Wavelet Transform (WT) is a powerful technique of signal processing, its applications in power systems have been increasing to evaluate power system conditions, such as faults, switching transients, power quality issues, among others. Electromagnetic transients in power systems are due to changes in the network configuration, producing non-periodic signals, which have to be identified to avoid power outages in normal operation or transient conditions. In this paper a methodology to develop a new adaptive mother wavelet for electromagnetic transient analysis is proposed. Classification is carried out with an innovative technique based on adaptive wavelets, where filter bank coefficients will be adapted until a discriminant criterion is optimized. Then, its corresponding filter coefficients will be used to get the new mother wavelet, named wavelet ET, which allowed to identify and to distinguish the high frequency information produced by different electromagnetic transients.

Switching transient phenomena in Electric Power System develop several disturbances, sometimes very hazardous for the electrical equipment life, for the environment and for the human life. Switching transient phenomena produce over voltage, over current and electrical fields, which haven't to neglect. Several types of wavelet network algorithms have been considered for detection of power system switching transients. But both time and frequency information are accessible by multiresolution analysis (MRA). This paper presents a wavelet transform based multiresolution analysis of power system signal to detect, localize and extract switching transients. Power system switching transients have been simulated using MATLAB-7.01. The key idea underlying the approach is to decompose a distorted signal into other signals which represents a smoothed version and detailed version of the original signal. The decomposition is performed using multiresolution analysis. The proposed method appears to be robust for detection and localization of power quality disturbances produced due to load switching and capacitor switching. The GaAs photoconductive switch is an important device in the measurement of the signal of ultra high-speed. In this paper, the transmission model of transient signals on GaAs photoconductive material is given, and the experimental system of near-field detection is set up. It is gotten that the full width half magnitude of signal is about 2ps. Based on the testing result of delay-time-modulation method, the relationship between signal amplitude and the form of connection mode is analyzed and discussed. It is shown that the coupling of capacity is important to acquire the transient signal.

The paper presents an informal review of some techniques available for signal analysis. In the interpretation of biomedical signals, the individuation of hidden transient phenomena in the spectrum can have a crucial role for diagnostic purposes. Since most biological signals are nonstationary, the Fourier transform is not sufficient to detect possible transient phenomena in the spectrum; therefore, some improvements in the Fourier transform technique have been carried out by means of window functions in the transformation kernel. Some of the most important features of recent developments in signal analysis are discussed here, with special focus on the uncertainty principle governing any time–frequency analysis.

Based on a brief introduction to elementary theory of wavelet analysis, the disadvantages of wavelet method and wavelet packet method are given. A new wavelet analysis procedure is proposed for decomposition and reconstruction of measured transient signals. This method can search by specific frequency paths, then overcomes the shortcomings of uniform frequency intervals in pure wavelet analyses and of large computational costs in common wavelet packet analyses. As examples, a signal-noise separation and a weak signal extraction are given to show the effectiveness of the new procedure.

ABSTRACT We present a systematic search for γ-ray emission from supernovae (SNe) in the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) Pass 8 data. The sample of targets consists of 55,880 candidates from the Open Supernova Catalogue. We searched for γ rays from SNe by means of a variable-size sliding-time-window analysis. Our results confirm the presence of transient γ-ray emission from the sources of non-AGN classes, including transitional pulsars, solar flares, γ-ray bursts, novae, and the Crab Nebula, which are projected near some of these SN’s positions, and also strengthen support to the variable signal in the direction of SN iPTF14hls. The analysis is successful in finding both short (e.g. solar flares) and long (e.g. transitional pulsars) high flux states. Our search reveals two new γ-ray transient signals occurred in 2019 in the directions of optical transients that are SN candidates, AT2019bvr and AT2018iwp, with their flux increases within 6 months after the dates of SN’s discoveries. These signals are bright and their variability is at a higher statistical level than that of iPTF14hls. An exploration of archival multiwavelength observations towards their positions is necessary to establish their association with SNe or other classes of sources. Our analysis, in addition, shows a bright transient γ-ray signal at low Galactic latitudes in the direction of PSR J0205+6449. In addition, we report the results of an all-sky search for γ-ray transient sources. This provided two additional candidates to gamma-ray transient sources.

In this paper, two issues are addressed: (1) the applicability of the delay-coordinate embedding method to transient chaotic time series analysis, and (2) the Hilbert transform methodology for chaotic signal processing.A common practice in chaotic time series analysis has been to reconstruct the phase space by utilizing the delay-coordinate embedding technique, and then to compute dynamical invariant quantities of interest such as unstable periodic orbits, the fractal dimension of the underlying chaotic set, and its Lyapunov spectrum. As a large body of literature exists on applying the technique to time series from chaotic attractors, a relatively unexplored issue is its applicability to dynamical systems that exhibit transient chaos. Our focus will be on the analysis of transient chaotic time series. We will argue and provide numerical support that the current delay-coordinate embedding techniques for extracting unstable periodic orbits, for estimating the fractal dimension, and for computing the Lyapunov exponents can be readily adapted to transient chaotic time series.A technique that is gaining an increasing attention is the Hilbert transform method for signal processing in nonlinear systems. The general goal of the Hilbert method is to assess the spectrum of the instantaneous frequency associated with the underlying dynamical process. To obtain physically meaningful results, it is necessary for the signal to possess a proper rotational structure in the complex plane of the analytic signal constructed by the original signal and its Hilbert transform. We will describe a recent decomposition procedure for this task and apply the technique to chaotic signals. We will also provide an example to demonstrate that the methodology can be useful for addressing some fundamental problems in chaotic dynamics.

Our telemetry department has an application for a data categorization/compression of a high speed transient signal in a short period of time. Categorization of the signal reveals important system performance and compression is required because of the terminal nature of our telemetry testing. Until recently, the hardware for the system of this type did not exist. A new exploratory device from Intel has the capability to meet these extreme requirements. This integrated circuit is an analog neural network capable of performing 2 billion connections per second. The two main advantages of this chip over traditional hardware are the obvious computation speed of the device and the ability to compute a three layer feed-forward neural network classifier. The initial investigative development work using the Intel chip has been completed. The results from this proof of concept will show data categorization/compression performed on the neural network integrated circuit in real time. We will propose a preliminary design for a transient measurement system employing the Intel integrated circuit.

Recent developments in high power rated Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) have resulted in their successful application in Multi-Terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission systems and also have potential in the Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) distribution systems. This work presents the findings of stability studies carried out on a zonal MVDC architecture for the shipboard power distribution system. The stability study is confined to rotor angle stability of the power system, i.e. the transient and small signal stability analysis. The MTDC ring structure similar to MVDC shipboard power system was implemented in MATLAB/Simulink to look at the transient behavior of the MVDC system. Small signal stability analysis has been carried out with the help of Power System Toolbox (PST) for both MVAC as well as MVDC architectures. Later, Participation Analysis has been carried out to address the small signal instability in the case of MVAC architecture and methods for enhancement were also presented.

The research presented in this thesis considers the feasibility of utilising dsPICs (digital signal controllers) in the development of effective monitoring systems which have the capability to adapt to changes in operating conditions and can be quickly calibrated to suit a range of applications, thus helping to reduce the development time constraint. The capability of these monitoring solutions to detect and isolate faults occurring in pneumatic processes is investigated and their effectiveness verified. Three applications are considered gas pipe leakage, linear actuator operations and gripper action. In each case, solutions are developed based upon the dsPIC. The solutions utilise the analysis of pressure transients to overcome the limitation in the dsPIC memory. The deployment of minimal sensors and electronics was essential to optimise the cost of the system. Leak detection techniques are developed with application to gas fitting pipes. The speed at which correct decisions are determined was the essence of this work. The solutions are tested, compared and their capability validated using pipes which had been rejected according to industrial standards. In this application a dsPIC digital signal controller and a pressure sensor were deployed, thus ensuring a low cost monitoring solution. Linear actuator "end of stroke" monitoring has, previously, largely been possible using limit switches. A more challenging method based upon the deployment of a pressure sensor is outlined. Monitoring model surfaces were obtained and their capability to determine the health of the process was proved, at various supply pressures. With regard to the gripper monitoring, a performance surface by which the gripper action can be monitored is generated and embedded within the dsPIC. Various faults are simulated and their effect on the gripper performance investigated. Leakage and blockage are also investigated at various places in the pneumatic circuit to allow for an algorithm to be devised. Faults may be detected and isolated, and their locations identified to allow for timely recovery treatment, thus supporting an enhanced process monitoring strategy.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and classify EMG signals for prosthetic control. For transradial amputees the electrical signal of muscles is acquired, processed and classified with the final scope of moving a prosthetic hand. This signal has a first transient state related to the dynamic part of the movement starting from rest and a subsequent steady state which corresponds to the sustained and voluntary contraction. Up to now the classification has been performed only on the steady state, instead in this thesis we will include also the transient. The classification of the transient, due to its instability, is more difficult than for a stationary signal, however it can help to speed up the time necessary to move the prosthesis. In order to do that we use different instruments of pattern recognition and we show that in many situations the transient already provides a good classification, compatible with the steady state. Nevertheless the results depend on the abilities of the single patient.

This chapter addresses the analysis and quantification of electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) signals. Topics include characteristics of these signals and practical issues such as sampling, filtering, and artifact rejection. Basic concepts of analysis in time and frequency domains are presented, with attention to non-stationary signals focusing on time-frequency signal decomposition, analytic signal and Hilbert transform, wavelet transform, matching pursuit, blind source separation and independent component analysis, canonical correlation analysis, and empirical model decomposition. The behavior of these methods in denoising EEG signals is illustrated. Concepts of functional and effective connectivity are developed with emphasis on methods to estimate causality and phase and time delays using linear and nonlinear methods. Attention is given to Granger causality and methods inspired by this concept. A concrete example is provided to show how information processing methods can be combined in the detection and classification of transient events in EEG/MEG signals.

This chapter examines the poetics of rapid transit that emerged in the early twentieth century, including the verses of William Carlos Williams. Wishful civic boosters of the early twentieth century discerned signs of financial utopia in the “symbiotic relation” between skyscrapers and urban railways. These interdependent social forms were viewed as hallmarks of twentieth-century urban modernity. Rapid-transit poems of the period feature close-up encounters mingling people of different classes, races, and genders with unprecedented frequency, unfathomable swiftness, and sometimes uncontrollable force. This chapter first considers the differences between skyscraper verses and rapid-transit verses in terms of engagement with the modern urban landscape fashion before discussing “rapid-transit verse” in greater detail. It explores American poetry's fascination with rapid transit as a central theme, focusing on poems that dealt with subjects ranging from commuting to subways. It also analyzes William Carlos Williams's rapid-transit poetry to demonstrate the impact of the New Verse movement's passionate engagement with urban-industrial space as the site of modern experience.

AbstractThis study presents the empirical mode decomposition method (EMD) for vehicle vibration and a correlation detection approach for input from road and vehicle body vibration using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT). Although the magnitude squared coherence is commonly used to examine the correlation of vehicle vibration with road input, it is not suitable for non-stationary vibration. On the other hand, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) which consists of EMD and the Hilbert transform is proposed. This method is suitable for transient vibration analysis, while the drawbacks to intermittence signals are suggested. Vehicle vibration signals include intermittence signals in some cases. In this study, the masking EMD which adapts the mask signal to the amplitude of the target signal was applied to vehicle vibration to alleviate the drawbacks. By this method, the correlation analysis by HHT demonstrates higher temporal resolution compared to the continuous wavelet transform. Thus, it becomes possible to identify the components that caused vibrations at the moments when the passengers felt comfortable or uncomfortable, and to analyze the characteristics of the vibrations.

A methodology for the study of the relationship between different reactor signals is presented. The application of the methodology leads to identify dominant frequencies and the contribution from other different signals to the dominant frequencies. The methodology firstly uses a linear model to estimate the response characteristics of the system and the spectra of the noise source. The estimate of the process linear predictor is obtained by the ordinary least squares method. Then, the model performs a multivariate autoregressive analysis, and a relative power contribution index is computed to determine the inter-relationship between the different reactor noise signals. The power contribution index is an indication of how the fluctuation of one variable depends on other variables, at each frequency. In this work we analyze reactor signals acquired during two operational events occurred at Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (LVNPP), the only NPP of MEXICO. These events are: an event where a 12% amplitude power peak occurred and other event where power oscillations occurred in 1995. For the first event, signals from the average power range monitor, driven recirculation flows, position of recirculation flow control valves, and position and recirculation flow controllers, were used for the analysis. For the second transient, signals from the average power range monitor, total flow through the core, pressure drop in the core, jet pump flow and driven recirculation flow driven in both loops are analyzed. The results of the application of the methodology showed the relation between the variables during the transient events. Specifically, for the first transient, a frequency peak of 1.7 Hz was detected on the power spectrum from an APRM signal. In this case the major contribution to this frequency came from the driven recirculation flow at loop B. In the second event, the prominent power oscillation frequency (0.54 Hz) was tracked within the data from different signals. The major contribution to this 0.54 Hz peak came from both jet pump arrays (A and B) flow signals. Each array has 10 jet pumps.

We explore phase conjugation of transient optical signals through the mechanism of degenerate four-wave mixing in photorefractive media. Our model is governed by Maxwell’s equations for the transient optical fields, coupled with Kukhtarev’s1 diffusion equations for the material variables, under the assumptions of slowly varying envelopes and strong undepleted sinusoidal pumps. The resulting linear partial differential equations for the wave envelopes are solved via Laplace transform techniques in time. An explicit expression for the transfer function of the conjugator is obtained, and the related impulse response function is found by performing numerically an inverse Laplace transform. The conjugate signal is then expressed as an integral expression involving the probe signal and impulse response function. The effects of material parameters, an applied steady electric field, the total pump intensity, and the asymmetry of the pumps on the stability and performance of the conjugator are assessed.

Recently, a frequency modulated Ti:sapphire laser was used as a highly sensitive means for detection of transient species (1). In particular it was used to measure spectra of methylene and its halo-derivatives (2,3) and in addition very high signal-to-noise Doppler lineshapes were recorded from which significant dynamical analyses have derived (4). Within the last year we have incorporated the frequency modulation (FM) method into a near-infrared diode laser system which works at wavelengths around 1 μm and this has produced an order of magnitude improvment in signal-to-noise of that system. A further improvement in sensitivity has been achieved by extending the interaction region of the probing laser and the gas sample using a Herriott-type cell. Systems based upon this diode laser spectrometer which is cheap, simple to use and maintain, and relatively compact may provide a sensitive monitor of important gaseous molecules that absorb at similar wavelengths.

This report describes activity conducted in several lines of research associated with field-scale water and solute processes. A major effort was put forth developing a stochastic continuum analysis for an important class of problems involving flow of reactive and non reactive chemicals under steady unsaturated flow. The field-scale velocity covariance tensor has been derived from local soil properties and their variability, producing a large-scale description of the medium that embodies all of the local variability in a statistical sense. Special cases of anisotropic medium properties not aligned along the flow direction of spatially variable solute sorption were analysed in detail, revealing a dependence of solute spreading on subtle features of the variability of the medium, such as cross-correlations between sorption and conductivity. A novel method was developed and tested for measuring hydraulic conductivity at the scale of observation through the interpretation of a solute transport outflow curve as a stochastic-convective process. This undertaking provided a host of new K(q) relationships for existing solute experiments and also laid the foundation for future work developing a self-consistent description of flow and transport under these conditions. Numerical codes were developed for calculating K(q) functions for a variety of solute pulse outflow shapes, including lognormal, Fickian, Mobile-Immobile water, and bimodal. Testing of this new approach against conventional methodology was mixed, and agreed most closely when the assumptions of the new method were met. We conclude that this procedure offers a valuable alternative to conventional methods of measuring K(q), particularly when the application of the method is at a scale (e.g. and agricultural field) that is large compared to the common scale at which conventional K(q) devices operate. The same problem was approached from a numerical perspective, by studying the feasibility of inverting a solute outflow signal to yield the hydraulic parameters of the medium that housed the experiment. We found that the inverse problem was solvable under certain conditions, depending on the amount of noise in the signal and the degree of heterogeneity in the medium. A realistic three dimensional model of transient water and solute movement in a heterogeneous medium that contains plant roots was developed and tested. The approach taken was to generate a single realization of this complex flow event, and examine the results to see whether features were present that might be overlooked in less sophisticated model efforts. One such feature revealed is transverse dispersion, which is a critically important component in the development of macrodispersion in the longitudinal direction. The lateral mixing that was observed greatly exceeded that predicted from simpler approaches, suggesting that at least part of the important physics of the mixing process is embedded in the complexity of three dimensional flow. Another important finding was the observation that variability can produce a pseudo-kinetic behavior for solute adsorption, even when the local models used are equilibrium.
