Luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), denned by the criterion LIR ≳ 2 × 1011L⊙ (for H0=75 kms−1 Mpc−1), are the most powerful IR sources in the Universe, with most of their emission (~ 90%) in the far-IR. Most LIRGs are interacting/merging galaxies with large amounts of molecular gas as revealed by CO surveys (Sanders et al. 1991; Solomon et al. 1996). However, whether starbursts or dust-enshrouded AGNs/QSOs dominate the IR luminosity is not resolved.CO may not trace the active star-forming regions where gas density is more than one order of magnitude higher than the average. Dense molecular gas is better traced by high dipole-moment molecules like HCN and CS (e.g., Nguyen-Q-Rieu et al. 1992; Gao & Solomon 1996). Therefore, it is essential to survey HCN emission in a large sample of LIRGs to better reveal the nature of LIRGs. We here study IR and molecular gas properties vs. galaxy-galaxy interactions in LIRGs over various merging phases to trace their evolution and explore some links among interactions, starbursts, and AGN phenomena.

A novel segmentation algorithm for polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images is proposed in this paper. The method is composed of two essential components: a merging order and a merging predicate. The similarity measured by the complex-kind Hotelling–Lawley trace (HLT) statistic is used to decide the merging order. The merging predicate is determined by the scattering characteristics and the revised Wishart distance between adjacent pixels, which can greatly improve the performance in speckle suppression and detail preservation. A postprocessing step is applied to obtain a satisfactory result after the merging operation. The decomposition and merging processes are iteratively executed until the termination criterion is met. The superiority of the proposed method was verified with experiments on two RADARSAT-2 PolSAR images and a Gaofen-3 PolSAR image, which demonstrated that the proposed method can obtain more accurate segmentation results and shows a better performance in speckle suppression and detail preservation than the other algorithms.

Abstract We discuss the central role that dust condensation plays in shaping the observational appearance of outflows from coalescing binary systems. As binaries begin to coalesce, they shock-heat and expel material into their surroundings. Depending on the properties of the merging system, this material can expand to the point where molecules and dust form, dramatically increasing the gas opacity. We use the existing population of luminous red novae to constrain the thermodynamics of these ejecta, then apply our findings to the progressive obscuration of merging systems in the lead up to their coalescence. Compact progenitor stars near the main sequence or in the Hertzsprung gap along with massive progenitor stars have sufficiently hot circumstellar material to remain unobscured by dust. By contrast, more extended, low-mass giants should become completely optically obscured by dust formation in the circumbinary environment. We predict that 30%–50% of stellar-coalescence transients for solar-mass stars will be dusty, infrared-luminous sources. Of these, the optical transients may selectively trace complete merger outcomes while the infrared transients trace common envelope ejection outcomes.

To handle a large-scale object, a two-stage clustering method has been previously proposed. The method generates a large number of clusters during the first stage and merges clusters during the second stage. In this paper, a novel two-stage clustering method is proposed by introducing cluster validity measures as the merging criterion during the second stage. The significant cluster validity measures used to evaluate cluster partitions and determine the suitable number of clusters act as the criteria for merging clusters. The performance of the proposed method based on six typical indices is compared with eight artificial datasets. These experiments show that a trace of the fuzzy covariance matrixWtrand its kernelizationKWtrare quite effective when applying the proposed method, and obtain better results than the other indices.

Top-down feedback does not benefit speech recognition; on the contrary, it can hinder it. No experimental data imply that feedback loops are required for speech recognition. Feedback is accordingly unnecessary and spoken word recognition is modular. To defend this thesis, we analyse lexical involvement in phonemic decision making. TRACE (McClelland & Elman 1986), a model with feedback from the lexicon to prelexical processes, is unable to account for all the available data on phonemic decision making. The modular Race model (Cutler & Norris 1979) is likewise challenged by some recent results, however. We therefore present a new modular model of phonemic decision making, the Merge model. In Merge, information flows from prelexical processes to the lexicon without feedback. Because phonemic decisions are based on the merging of prelexical and lexical information, Merge correctly predicts lexical involvement in phonemic decisions in both words and nonwords. Computer simulations show how Merge is able to account for the data through a process of competition between lexical hypotheses. We discuss the issue of feedback in other areas of language processing and conclude that modular models are particularly well suited to the problems and constraints of speech recognition.

AbstractDirect numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the spatial features of large- and very-large-scale motions (LSMs and VLSMs) in a turbulent channel flow ($\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}\mathit{Re}_{\tau }=930$). A streak detection method based on the streamwise velocity fluctuations was used to individually trace the cores of LSMs and VLSMs. We found that both the LSM and VLSM populations were large. Several of the wall-attached LSMs stretched toward the outer regions of the channel. The VLSMs consisted of inclined outer LSMs and near-wall streaks. The number of outer LSMs increased linearly with the streamwise length of the VLSMs. The temporal features of the low-speed streaks in the outer region revealed that growing and merging events dominated the large-scale (1–$3\delta $) structures. The VLSMs $({>}3\delta )$ were primarily created by merging events, and the statistical analysis of these events supported that the merging of large-scale upstream structures contributed to the formation of VLSMs. Because the local convection velocity is proportional to the streamwise velocity fluctuations, the streamwise-aligned structures of the positive- and negative-$u$ patches suggested a primary mechanism underlying the merging events. The alignment of the positive- and negative-$u$ structures may be an essential prerequisite for the formation of VLSMs.

This paper proposes a new clustering method based on the hierarchical use of the analytical two-class clustering tool introduced by Lin and Tsai.1 The method comprises two phases. In the first phase, called the splitting phase, the data set is hierarchically decomposed into some subsets. In the second phase, called the merging phase, the set-to-set distances between these subsets are checked so that some subsets can be merged back together to obtain better clustering results. We use the idea of the so-called dense cut to determine when to stop the splitting phase. We also use a trace-following technique for the so-called boundary data to reduce significantly the computational load involved in the merging phase. Two algorithms are provided, and many experiments are included to show that the data being processed are not required to be linearly separable, noiseless, or formed of spherical clusters.

Three-dimensional (3D) integration has become a leading approach in chip packaging. The interconnection density and reliability of micro-bumps in chip stacking are often threatened by high bonding temperatures. The method of building chip-to-chip interconnections by electroless deposition of metal has its distinct merit, while the interfacial defect issue, especially that related to voiding during the merging of opposite sides, remains largely unsolved. In this study, to trace the influencing factors in the voiding, the growth characteristics of the electroless all-copper interconnections were examined by carrying out deposition experiments in a microfluidic channel device. The results show that when the gap between the opposite copper bumps to be electrolessly merged is as low as 10 μm, significant voids appear at the inflow side and the top of the copper bumps because the hydrogen cannot be expelled in time. A finite-element flow model of the plating solution between the chips was established, which showed that the flow rate of the plating solution around the copper bumps was much higher than in the merging gap, causing an uneven supply of reactants. Based on these findings, we proposed two potential solutions, one is to improve the flow mode of the plating solution, and the other is to add the reaction inhibitor, 2,2′-bipyridine. Finally, the combination of these two approaches successfully achieved an improved merging quality of the copper joints.

Abstract. Long term, high quality estimates of burned area are needed for improving both prognostic and diagnostic fire emissions models and for assessing feedbacks between fire and the climate system. We developed global, monthly burned area estimates aggregated to 0.5° spatial resolution for the time period July 1996 through mid-2009 using four satellite data sets. From 2001–2009, our primary data source was 500-m burned area maps produced using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance imagery; more than 90% of the global area burned during this time period was mapped in this fashion. During times when the 500-m MODIS data were not available, we used a combination of local regression and regional regression trees to develop relationships between burned area and Terra MODIS active fire data. Cross-calibration with fire observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) allowed the data set to be extended prior to the MODIS era. With our data set we estimated the global annual area burned for the years 1997–2008 varied between 330 and 431 Mha, with the maximum occurring in 1998. We compared our data set to the recent GFED2, L3JRC, GLOBCARBON, and MODIS MCD45A1 global burned area products and found substantial differences in many regions. Lastly, we assessed the interannual variability and long-term trends in global burned area over the past 12 years. This burned area time series serves as the basis for the third version of the Global Fire Emissions Database (GFED3) estimates of trace gas and aerosol emissions.

Understanding wireless traffic is fundamental for improving networks and designing advanced algorithms and protocols. In this context, passive measurements have the edge over active measurements, as there is no requirement for any modification in existing network devices. Passive measurements are often less expensive and easier to deploy than other methods. This approach involves monitoring the wireless medium and collecting data on various network parameters, such as signal strength, channel occupancy, and packet loss. It consists of deploying multiple sniffers throughout the target area (sniffers are devices operating in monitor mode that collect the wireless packets regardless of their nature). However, one of the main challenges with passive measurements is ensuring trace completeness, or the ability to collect a complete and accurate dataset. We know that a single sniffer cannot capture all the traffic due to the inherent characteristics of the wireless medium where the environment can be highly dynamic and unpredictable. Several factors can impact trace completeness in wireless passive measurements. These include environmental factors, such as interference from other wireless devices, changes in the physical environment (such as moving objects), and variations in wireless signal propagation due to changes in atmospheric conditions. Additionally, issues with the measurement equipment itself, such as calibration errors or data processing issues, can also impact trace completeness. The importance of trace completeness in wireless passive measurements cannot be overstated. Inaccurate or incomplete data can lead to incorrect conclusions about network performance, which can have significant implications for network planning, optimization, and troubleshooting. For example, incomplete data can result in missed opportunities to identify and address network issues, and incorrect or incomplete trajectory reconstruction. In this thesis, we study the quality of traces captured by a sniffer and investigate the resulting improvements by introducing redundancy in the number of sniffers. We explore the impact of the following two aspects on the quality of wireless traces: the number of sniffing devices and the type of hardware used. We study the variation in the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and its impact on distance estimation. The analysis is helped by the development of a readily-usable and easily-available tool, called PyPal, for the synchronization and merging of Wi-Fi traces collected simultaneously

The objective of this research is to establish a website concerning Fission Track Network Virtual Reality on “Earth Chemistry Education”, connecting network technology, object-oriented design, PHP and MySQL database system and constructing a cross operational platform “Fission Track” Network Virtual Reality Learning Environment in assisting the implementation of merging information science technology into earth chemistry education, and explore the impact of network virtual reality learning system to the learning performance of natural domain teaching in school. The test samples designed by this research are college student in National Tainan Normal Training College. A total of 66 students participated in this experiment. The research result shows that college student in National Tainan Normal Training College t=-15.393(P=.000 < .01).After receiving Fission Track virtual reality education effective to promote academic results. The interaction between sex, different achievements and different department experiment processing did not reach the significant standard, with receiving “Fission Track network virtual reality” education (P66). It can tell us while coming into virtual reality learning, we can get generalization with sex, different achievements and different department. With this research only from 66 students participated in this experiment, it can not get good external validity, but, I hope this results will be tested by lagging behind. Analyses based on the surveying results of people’s attitude after system using show that though the operating aspect and designing content of Fission Track Virtual Reality did not reach seamless human-machine contact as expected, yet it is close to 81% (P72) of college student in National Tainan Normal Training College who thought this system was interesting and would like to use this system for learning again. Meanwhile, through the operation of Fission Track Network Virtual Reality, students have stronger impression about in the teaching material, indicating the special features of Fission Track Network Virtual Reality in assisting students learning. In addition, the learning activity of Fission Track Network Virtual Reality is considerable attractiveness. Students are much willing to learn more, because this also helps them in their learning. In this research, to clear misconception, some are effective(ex:two, nine and eleven)for cleaning misconception, the other are not(ex:twelve and thirteen), because of our education system need to strengthen. But Fission Track education system has very good grades in learning of experiment steps. The results will be needed for more testing by lagging behind.

The Waldock Report revealed the London Business of OUP as an enormous organization that published a significant list that included bibles, music, children’s books, English Language Teaching, and general trade books, and undertook the advertising, marketing, warehousing, and distribution of all Press books. The London Business, located at Ely House, also administered the large and growing network of international branches. Relations between London and Oxford were strained, however, by a mixture of structural, financial, and personal problems. Attempts were made to rectify these problems, including the introduction of a Joint Management Committee, but in 1973 the Secretary and Delegates decided to restructure the Press entirely by removing the London Business to Oxford and merging the publishing functions into a more coherent organization. The chapter considers the logistics and financial costs of the move as well as the impact on the staff of London and Oxford.

This chapter examines the economics of antitrust, with particular emphasis on how antitrust law affects professional team sports. In the late 1800s, Americans worried about the growing concentration of power in the hands of a few producers such as Standard Oil, American Tobacco, and other large firms that consolidated their holds over industries by merging and acquiring other companies. Other industrial leaders sought to fix prices above those obtained under competition. The Sherman Antitrust Act, enacted in 1890, contains provisions addressing “contract,” “conspiracy,” and “trade and commerce.” This chapter first considers how courts applied the Sherman Act to cases involving professional team sports before discussing the characteristics of professional sports leagues, how owners of professional sports teams reported profits and losses, the issue of player salaries and exploitation, and competitive balance and revenue sharing in professional leagues. It also describes franchise relocation and expansion and how television created demand in sports.

The Walmart/Massmart merger and the ensuing proceedings before the South African competition authorities and court system provide a high-profile example of how international economic law affects the policy space of states to enact domestic regulation supportive of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Whereas the opponents of the takeover invoked the ‘public interest’ provisions in the South African Competition Act which explicitly mandate consideration of SME interests, arguing that the merger would have negative effects on South African SMEs, the merging parties claimed that the imposition of certain performance requirements would violate the country’s obligations under international law. Taking the Walmart/Massmart merger as an example, this contribution analyses the extent to which World Trade Organization (WTO) law and international investment law limit the ability of domestic competition authorities to prohibit takeovers by foreign companies on SME-related grounds or to impose SME-friendly performance requirements as a precondition for merger approval.

AbstractUnlabeled entity deduplication is a relevant task already studied in the recent literature. Most methods can be traced back to the following workflow: entity blocking phase, in-block pairwise comparisons between entities to draw similarity relations, closure of the resulting meshes to create groups of duplicate entities, and merging group entities to remove disambiguation. Such methods are effective but still not good enough whenever a very low false positive rate is required. In this paper, we present an approach for evaluating the correctness of “groups of duplicates”, which can be used to measure the group’s accuracy hence its likelihood of false-positiveness. Our novel approach is based on a Graph Neural Network that exploits and combines the concept of Graph Attention and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM). The accuracy of the proposed approach is verified in the context of Author Name Disambiguation applied to a curated dataset obtained as a subset of the OpenAIRE Graph that includes PubMed publications with at least one ORCID identifier.

We suggest that multimedia environments can benefit from learning as well as offer significant capacity to serve as research purposes. Because motivational processes can support or inhibit complex learning, we first review current hypermedia learning models by specifically focusing on how they integrate motivational elements into their frameworks. Following our observation of a gap in the way motivational constructs (e.g., achievement goal orientation) are operationally defined, we suggest alternative methods, called traces, which make these latent constructs visible and measurable. The goal-tracing methodology we describe draws on achievement goal theory and extensive empirical studies in various settings. Using it, we treat learners’ use of cognitive tools as traces that express their goal orientations. By applying data mining techniques to these data, we show how it is possible to identify goal patterns together with study tactic patterns. We propose that future research can benefit substantially by merging trace methodologies with other methods for gathering data about motivation and learning.

This chapter explores the developing story of union identities through analysis of four key drivers to identity change, namely, union mergers, union rebranding, new unions and union dissolutions. Several unions were found to have rebranded, adopting new identities and frequently new names. Some have adopted ‘aspirational titles’ giving no indication of who might join. Whilst union amalgamations lead to rebranding, transfers of engagements tend to result in dilution of union identity, as minor merging unions are absorbed into major merging unions. New unions are less likely to adopt aspirational titles, although some were found to be ephemeral. New generation unions were observed to adopt particular approaches to organisation, but not considered to project a new form of identity. A number of union dissolutions were observed, with these unions tending have small and declining memberships and to be unsuccessful in negotiating transfers of engagements. Overall, the chapter recognises that the work inevitably presents a snapshot of a moving picture.

Beginning in the 1640s, we know from a few Virginia records, colonists from the north began filtering southward into the Sounds region, with a big increase after 1670 that flooded out the Native people from most of their age-old territories. Now it was they who had to merge into an alien culture, and this chapter traces the land loss and the gradual change of culture in the Indian communities. By 1800, nearly all the land was in English (American, now) hands; even the reservations had gone. Thanks to “spin-off” of individual families into white society, and the increasing resemblance, in the remaining communities’ lifeways to those of their non-Indian neighbours, an easily recognizable Indian presence shrank further, until relatively few individuals even kept a memory of having Native American ancestry. This chapter recounts these changes in detail for Roanokes and Secotas who became Machapungas/Mattamuskeets, Pomeiokes who became Pampticos, Weapemeocs to Yeopims/Paspatanks/Poteskeets, and Chowanokes who managed to retain their traditional name.

The story of fertilization is often told as man’s story, a race ending in capturing and penetrating an egg. Science finds these stories to be false myths. The female reproductive tract is not a raceway, but an active entity that gives sperm the ability to activate the egg; and the merging of sperm and egg is not done by boring or drilling through the egg, but by the melting of cell membranes so that the two cells become one.

Abstract The purpose of Chapter 7 is to compare the national anti-dumping laws of member states of the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) before suggesting how, legally, internal anti-dumping laws might be phased out between NAFTA member states. Indeed, the existing system of review of the Binational Tribunal and the new rules on competition contained in NAFTA seem to favour the eventual merging of internal anti-dumping and anti-trust laws. The extraterritorial application of a comprehensive system of competition laws appears to be the only pragmatic alternative to antidumping enforcement. "Traceability represents a major concern in supply chains of perishable products. Progress enables complex and integrated monitoring systems based on Internet of Things (IoT), continuous monitoring and real-time alerting. However, the adoption rate of these innovations is not fast enough due to the need of expensive equipment and a robust digital infrastructure. The use of inappropriate technology and the lack of standardization between different monitoring systems often causes data leakage during storage and transportation. The lack of a standard in the traceability tools also causes difficulties in merging the output preventing the formation of a seamless cold chain. This paper presents a decision support tool that helps practitioners to track and trace the perishable products at each stage of the supply chain. The tool gathers data from multiple sources with different data structures, merge the files and fill missing data with the aid of a routing tool and weather forecasting databases. The output of this tool is a unique file containing all the traceability data about the product during its life-cycle. The tool also visualizes the traceability data through the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) based on OpenStreetMap."

Abstract The nonlinear nonplanar response of cantilever inextensional metallic beams to a principal parametric excitation of two of its “exural modes, one in each plane, is investigated. The lowest torsional frequencies of the beams considered are much larger than the frequencies of the excited modes so that the torsional inertia can be neglected. Using this condition as well as the inextensionality condition, we develop a Lagrangian whose variation leads to the two integro-partial-differential equations of Crespo da Silva and Glynn. The method of time-averaged Lagrangian is used to derive four first-order nonlinear ordinary-differential equations governing the modulation of the amplitudes and phases of the two interacting modes. The modulation equations exhibit the symmetry property found by Feng and Leal by analytically manipulating the interaction coefficients in the modulation equations obtained by Nayfeh and Pai by applying the method of multiple scales to the governing integro-partial-differential equations. A pseudo arclength scheme is used to trace the branches of the equilibrium solutions and an investigation of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix is used to assess their stability. The equilibrium solutions experience pitchfork, saddle-node, and Hopf bifurcations. A detailed bifurcation of the dynamic solutions of the modulation equations is presented. Five branches of dynamic (periodic and chaotic) solutions were found. Two of these branches emerge from two Hopf bifurcations and the other three are isolated. The limit cycles undergo symmetry-breaking, cyclic-fold, and period-doubling bifurcations, whereas the chaotic attractors undergo attractor-merging and boundary crises.

Customer behavior modeling is important for businesses in order to understand, attract and retain customers. It is critical that the models are able to track the dynamics of customer behavior over time. We propose FC-CSM, a Customer Segmentation Model based on a Fragmentation-Coagulation process, which can track the evolution of customer segmentation, including the splitting and merging of customer groups. We conduct a case study using transaction data from a major Australian supermarket chain, where we: 1) show that our model achieves high fitness of purchase rate, outperforming models using mixture of Poisson processes; 2) compare the impact of promotions on customers for different products; and 3) track how customer groups evolve over time and how individual customers shift across groups. Our model provides valuable information to stakeholders about the different types of customers, how they change purchase behavior, and which customers are more receptive to promotion campaigns.

Firms in global value chains (GVCs) are granular and exert bargaining power over the terms of trade. We show that these features are crucial to understanding the well-established variation in prices and pass-through across importers and exporters. We develop a novel theory of prices in GVCs, which tractably nests a wide range of bilateral concentration and bargaining power configurations. We test and evaluate the models predictions using a novel dataset merging transaction-level U.S. import data with balance sheet data for both U.S. importers and foreign exporters. Our pricing framework enhances traditional frameworks in the literature in accurately predicting price changes following a tariff shock. The results shed light on the role of firms in determining the tariff pass-through onto import prices.

This deliverable focuses on the proling activities developed in the project with the partner's applications. To perform this proling activities, a couple of benchmarks were dened in collaboration with WP5. The rst benchmark is an embarrassingly parallel benchmark that performs a read and then multiple writes of the same object, with the objective of stressing the memory and storage systems and evaluate the overhead when these reads and writes are performed in parallel. A second benchmark is dened based on the Continuation Multi Level Monte Carlo (C-MLMC) algorithm. While this algorithm is normally executed using multiple levels, for the proling and performance analysis objectives, the execution of a single level was enough since the forthcoming levels have similar performance characteristics. Additionally, while the simulation tasks can be executed as parallel (multi-threaded tasks), in the benchmark, single threaded tasks were executed to increase the number of simulations to be scheduled and stress the scheduling engines. A set of experiments based on these two benchmarks have been executed in the MareNostrum 4 supercomputer and using PyCOMPSs as underlying programming model and dynamic scheduler of the tasks involved in the executions. While the rst benchmark was executed several times in a single iteration, the second benchmark was executed in an iterative manner, with cycles of 1) Execution and trace generation; 2) Performance analysis; 3) Improvements. This had enabled to perform several improvements in the benchmark and in the scheduler of PyCOMPSs. The initial iterations focused on the C-MLMC structure itself, performing re-factors of the code to remove ne grain and sequential tasks and merging them in larger granularity tasks. The next iterations focused on improving the PyCOMPSs scheduler, removing existent bottlenecks and increasing its performance by making the scheduler a multithreaded engine. While the results can still be improved, we are satised with the results since the granularity of the simulations run in this evaluation step are much ner than the one that will be used for the real scenarios. The deliverable nishes with some recommendations that should be followed along the project in order to obtain good performance in the execution of the project codes.

Wage insurance provides income support to displaced workers who find reemployment at a lower wage. We analyze wage insurance in the context of the U.S. Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program by merging linked employer-employee Census data to TAA petitions and leveraging a discontinuity in eligibility based on worker age. Wage insurance eligibility increases short-run employment probabilities and leads to higher long-run cumulative earnings. We find shorter non-employment durations largely drive increased long-term earnings among workers eligible for wage insurance. Our results are quantitatively consistent with a standard non-stationary partial equilibrium search model. The program is self-financing even under conservative assumptions.
