Resumo:
This study aimed to investigate the proximate composition, mineral content, functional properties, molecular structure, in vitro starch digestibility, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP) of green banana flour (GBF) cultivars grown in South Africa. With proximate composition, Finger Rose and Pisang Awak had the highest protein (4.33 g/100 g) and fat (0.85 g/100 g) content, respectively. The highest ash content (3.50 g/100 g) occurred with both Grand Naine and FHIA-01 cultivars. Potassium and copper were the most abundant and least minerals, respectively. Pisang Awak cultivar had the highest water absorption capacity (67.11%), while Du Roi had the highest swelling power (0.83 g/g) at 90 °C. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that starch granules from all GBF cultivars were irregular in shape and they had dense surfaces with debris. All the GBF cultivars had similar diffraction patterns with prominent peaks from 15°–24° diffraction angles. The resistant starch (RS) and amylose content of the FHIA-01 cultivar indicates that the GBF has the potential to lower risks of type 2 diabetes and obesity. The highest TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity occurred with the Grande Naine cultivar. Based on their functional characteristics, the Grand Naine and FHIA-01 GBF cultivars could potentially be used as raw materials for bakery products as well as for the fortification of snacks.

Fruit pigments are associated with the presence of antioxidants. This study determined the content of antioxidant components (total phenolic content (TPC), ascorbic acid, beta carotene and lycopene) and colour in selected local fruits (papaya, watermelon, dragon fruit, wax apple, and jackfruit). The TPC, ascorbic acid, beta carotene and lycopene were determined spectrophotometrically. Ascorbic acid content was determined using the 2,6-Dichlorophenolindophenol (DCPIP) titration method. Colour was assessed by tristimulus colorimetry based on the reflection spectrum. Total soluble solids (TSS) were also determined. Papaya has TPC (61.86 mg GAE/100 g), ascorbic acid (31.14 mg/100 mL), lycopene (4.82 mg/100 g), beta carotene (19.98 mg /100 g), TSS (10.17 °Brix) and colour profile L*(41.30), a*(24.07), b*(26.48), chroma value (35.79) and hue angle (47.70°). Wax apple has TPC (94.20 mg GAE/100 g), ascorbic acid (11.13 mg/100 mL), lycopene (1.62 mg/100 g), TSS (10.00 °Brix) and colour profile L*(63.42), a*(0.42), b*(7.64), chroma value (7.66) and hue angle (86.69°). Dragon fruit has TPC (179.985 mg GAE/100 g), ascorbic acid (5.94 mg/100 mL), beta carotene (3.98 mg/100 g), TSS (10.30 °Brix) and colour profile L*(21.45), b*(0.66), chroma value (6.86) and hue angle (5.52°). Jackfruit has TPC (75.16 mg GAE/100 g), lycopene (2.31 mg/100 g), beta carotene (9.25 mg/100 g), TSS (20.43 °Brix) and colour profile L*(71.74), a*(5.79) and hue angle (82.98°). Watermelon has ascorbic acid (19.28 mg/100 mL), lycopene (36.55 mg/100 g), beta carotene (14.37 mg/100 g) and colour profile b* (12.36), chroma value (26.98) and hue angle (27.22°). The a* value has a significant positive correlation (p<0.05) with the content of ascorbic acid, lycopene, and beta carotene while the chroma value shows a negative correlation with the total phenolic content (p<0.05). The b* value showing a negative correlation with the total phenolic content (p<0.05). Local fruits can be a good source of nutrient, phytochemicals, and antioxidants.

<p>Ten lettuce varieties are analyzed for antioxidant activity, total phenolic, nitrate, and nitrite contents, and the effects of harvest maturity and cold storage in selected varieties are determined. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (TPC) are the highest in Red Oak, Red Coral, Red Rapids, and Grand Rapids; intermediate in Green Oak, Green Cos, and Frillice Iceberg; and the lowest in Butterhead, Mini Green Cos, and Head lettuce. Nitrate content is the highest in Red Coral, while the other 9 varieties have comparably lower contents. Nitrite content is inadequate and does not differ with variety. Harvest maturity of 45 days after transplanting (DAT) produced the highest antioxidant activity and TPC, much higher in Red Bowl and Red Butterhead varieties than in Mini Green Cos, Butterhead, Frillice Iceberg, and Green Big Bowl varieties. Storage at 8oC for 21 days has no remarkable effects on antioxidant activity, TPC, nitrate, and nitrite contents. Stored Red Bowl lettuce has higher antioxidant activity and TPC than Butter-head and Green Big Bowl varieties. Nitrate content decreases at the end of storage, while nitrite content is below 1 mg/kg FW during the entire storage period, regardless of variety.</p>

Resumo:
The TNP contour air bearing slider is composed of oversized transverse pressure contour (TPC) outer rails and a central negative pressure (NP) cavity. The NP cavity is separated from the TPC rails by an ambient pressure reservoir which serves two functions. First, it prevents direct hydrodynamic interaction between the various component air bearing surfaces and thus, eliminates pressure distortion and dilution, common causes of problems related to flying height and roll angle control. Second, the ambient reservoir allows the TPC rails and NP cavity to be configured and dimensioned independently so that they will track each other with a nearly constant force difference, resulting in a flying height that has significantly reduced sensitivity to altitude change. The multi-function TPC sections of the outside rails are able to overcome the effects of a changing radius and wide skew angle variation over the disk radius as well as a changing vacuum load and asymmetry of the NP cavity pressure, in order to provide a truly constant low flying height over the entire data surface. The combination of a high air bearing stiffness and a gradually developing cavity vacuum as disk velocity increases produces a rapid slider take-off from the disk surface. Dynamic stability of the TNP slider air bearing is enhanced by the unusual combination of a high air bearing stiffness and high air film damping in each of the three slider excursion modes. Finally, the TNP slider experiences a reduced sensitivity of flying height to manufacturing and operational tolerances as compared to non-NP type sliders. The entire TNP slider air bearing is created by a two-etch process. A shallow etch creates the TPC sections and leading edge step. A deeper etch forms the NP cavity, ambient pressure reservoir, and outermost edge of each side rail.

Preliminary results of the performance of the RANSAC algorithm over data measured with the ACTAR TPC detector are herewith presented. With the aim of improving track reconstruction in highly contaminated events, an initial assessment of the algorithm is given for elastic reactions involving p, d with a beam of 20O. Results show great possibilities for data/noise discrimination, which in the near future will be extended to small angle and more energetic events, which are key for transfer reactions.

This paper proposes a design method for determining the configuration of a TPC slider by using an optimization technique in order to meet the desired flying characteristics over the entire recording band. The desired flying characteristics considered in this study are to minimize the variation in flying height from a target value, to maintain the pitch angle as large as possible, to keep the roll angle as small as possible, and to keep the outside rail to fly lower than the inside rail. The design variables selected are left-side step width, pad width, right-side step width, side step depth, front taper height, and pivot offset in the transverse direction of the slider. The sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method in Automated Design Synthesis (ADS) is used to efficiently find the optimum design variables which simultaneously meet all the desired flying characteristics. To validate the suggested design method, a computer program is developed and applied to the configuration design of two TPC slider models positioned by a rotary actuator. The optimum configurations of each slider model are automatically obtained for three different target flying heights with the same predefined skew angle range without any difficulty. This shows the effectiveness of the proposed design method in comparison with the conventional one based on the parametric study.

A self-correction method for the drift artifacts of laboratory cone-beam nanoscale X-ray computed tomography (nano-CT) based on the trajectory of projection centroid (TPC) is proposed. This method does not require additional correction phantoms, simplifying the correction process. The whole TPC is estimated by the partial TPC in the optimal projection set. The projection drift is calculated by the measured TPC and the estimated TPC. The interval search method is used so that the proposed method can adapt to the case of a truncated projection due to drift. The fixed-angle scanning experiment of the Siemens star and the partial derivative analysis of the projection position show the necessity of correcting drift artifacts. Further, the Shepp–Logan phantoms with different drift levels are simulated. The results show that the proposed method can effectively estimate the horizontal and vertical drifts within the projection drift range of ±2 mm (27 pixels) with high accuracy. Experiments were conducted on tomato seed and bamboo stick to validate the feasibility of the proposed method for samples with different textures. The correction effect on different reconstructed slices indicates that the proposed method provides performance superior to the reference scanning method (RSM) and global fitting. In addition, the proposed method requires no extra scanning, which improves the acquisition efficiency, as well as radiation utilization.

ABSTRACT Different spiral generation mechanisms are expected to produce different morphological and kinematic features. In this first paper in a series, we carefully study the parameters of spiral structure in 155 face-on spiral galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, in the three gri bands. We use a method for deriving a set of parameters of spiral structure, such as the width of the spiral arms, their fraction to the total galaxy luminosity, and their colour, which have not been properly studied before. Our method is based on an analysis of a set of photometric cuts perpendicular to the direction of a spiral arm. Based on the results of our study, we compare the main three classes of spirals: grand design, multi-armed, and flocculent. We conclude that: (i) for the vast majority of galaxies (86 per cent), we observe an increase of their arm width with Galactocentric distance; (ii) more luminous spirals in grand design galaxies exhibit smaller variations of the pitch angle with radius than those in less luminous grand design spirals; (iii) grand design galaxies show less difference between the pitch angles of individual arms than multi-armed galaxies. Apart from these distinctive features, all three spiral classes do not differ significantly by their pitch angle, arm width, width asymmetry, and environment. Wavelength dependence is found only for the arm fraction. Therefore, observationally we find no strong difference (except for the view and number of arms) between grand design, multi-armed, and flocculent spirals in the sample galaxies.

The purpose of this study was twofold: to perform an in-depth three-dimensional kinematic analysis of grand rond de jambe en l'air en dehors and to identify different strategies employed between the skilled and novice dancers in performing grand rond de jambe. Ten female college dance students, ranked as skilled (N = 5) or novice (N = 5), performed grand rond de jambe while videotaped for three-dimensional motion analysis in a six-camera setup (60 Hz). Events and phases for the movement were determined to establish a protocol for biomechanic analysis of this movement. Orientation angles of the trunk and pelvis and horizontal and vertical angles of the gesture leg were computed for inter-group comparison. The results of this investigation show differences between skilled and novice dancers in terms of the vertical angle (height) of the gesture leg, horizontal angle of the leg at the transition of pelvic rotation, and increased pelvic motion in all three planes. No significant difference was observed in the trunk motion and orientation. It was concluded that the skilled group secured the required gesture leg motion via a pelvic strategy.

Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TPC), much debated at both national and international levels, has recently been subject to an amendment aimed at clarifying its meaning and averting more distressing cases related to freedom of expression. It should be noted that the former article 301 was an amended version of article 159 of the former TPC of 1926. As Türkan Sancar rightly states in her comprehensive book on both articles 159 and 301, article 159 is an article which has been revised many times. It was amended seven times after coming into effect in 1926 (in 1936, 1938, 1946, 1961, twice in 2002, and 2003). The new TPC was introduced as a package of penal-law reform prior to the opening of negotiations for Turkish membership of the European Union, and came into effect on 1 June 2005. Article 301 stated the following:1.A person who publicly denigrates Turkishness, the Republic or the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, shall be sentenced a penalty of imprisonment for a term of six months to three years.2.A person who publicly denigrates the Government of the Republic of Turkey, the judicial bodies of the State, the military or security organizations, shall be sentenced to a penalty of imprisonment for a term of six months to two years.3.Where denigrating of Turkishness is committed by a Turkish citizen in another country, the penalty to be imposed shall be increased by one third.4.Expressions of thought intended to criticize shall not constitute a crime.

A coupling-constant definition is given based on the compositeness property of some particle states with respect to the elementary states of other particles. It is applied in the context of the vector-spin-1/2-particle interaction vertices of a field theory, and the standard model. The definition reproduces Weinberg's angle in a grand-unified theory. One obtains coupling values close to the experimental ones for appropriate configurations of the standard-model vector particles, at the unification scale within grand-unified models, and at the electroweak breaking scale.

In most wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, the sensor nodes (SNs) are battery powered and the amount of energy consumed by the nodes in the network determines the network lifespan. For future Internet of Things (IoT) applications, reducing energy consumption of SNs has become mandatory. In this paper, an ultra-low-power nRF24L01 wireless protocol is considered for a bicycle WSN. The power consumption of the mobile node on the cycle track was modified by combining adjustable data rate, sleep/wake, and transmission power control (TPC) based on two algorithms. The first algorithm was a TPC-based distance estimation, which adopted a novel hybrid particle swarm optimization-artificial neural network (PSO-ANN) using the received signal strength indicator (RSSI), while the second algorithm was a novel TPC-based accelerometer using inclination angle of the bicycle on the cycle track. Based on the second algorithm, the power consumption of the mobile and master nodes can be improved compared with the first algorithm and constant transmitted power level. In addition, an analytical model is derived to correlate the power consumption and data rate of the mobile node. The results indicate that the power savings based on the two algorithms outperformed the conventional operation (i.e., without power reduction algorithm) by 78%.

We present studies of proton fluxes in the T10 beamline at CERN. A prototype high pressure gas time projection chamber (TPC) was exposed to the beam of protons and other particles, using the 0.8 GeV/c momentum setting in T10, in order to make cross section measurements of low energy protons in argon. To explore the energy region comparable to hadrons produced by GeV-scale neutrino interactions at oscillation experiments, i.e., near 0.1 GeV of kinetic energy, methods of moderating the T10 beam were employed: the dual technique of moderating the beam with acrylic blocks and measuring scattered protons off the beam axis was used to decrease the kinetic energy of incident protons, as well as change the proton/minimum ionising particle (MIP) composition of the incident flux. Measurements of the beam properties were made using time of flight systems upstream and downstream of the TPC. The kinetic energy of protons reaching the TPC was successfully changed from ∼0.3 GeV without moderator blocks to less than 0.1 GeV with four moderator blocks (40 cm path length). The flux of both protons and MIPs off the beam axis was increased. The ratio of protons to MIPs vary as a function of the off-axis angle allowing for possible optimisation of the detector to select the type of required particles. Simulation informed by the time of flight measurements show that with four moderator blocks placed in the beamline, (5.6 ± 0.1) protons with energies below 0.1 GeV per spill traversed the active TPC region. Measurements of the beam composition and energy are presented.

Given the huge potential of thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes for desalination and micro-pollutant removal, two different sets of six NF membranes were synthesized. The molecular structure of the polyamide active layer was tuned by using two different cross-linkers, terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC), reacted with tetra-amine solution containing β-Cyclodextrin (BCD). To further tune the structure of the active layers, the time duration of interfacial polymerization (IP) was varied from 1 to 3 min. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), water contact angle (WCA), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infra-red (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, elemental mapping and energy dispersive (EDX) analysis. The six fabricated membranes were tested for their ability to reject divalent and monovalent ions followed by rejection of micro-pollutants (pharmaceuticals). Consequently, terephthaloyl chloride turned out to be the most effective crosslinker for the fabrication of membrane active layer with tetra-amine in the presence of β-Cyclodextrin using interfacial polymerization reaction for 1 min. The membrane fabricated using TPC crosslinker (BCD-TA-TPC@PSf) showed higher % rejection for divalent ions (Na2SO4 = 93%; MgSO4 = 92%; MgCl2 = 91%; CaCl2 = 84%) and micro-pollutants (Caffeine = 88%; Sulfamethoxazole = 90%; Amitriptyline HCl = 92%; Loperamide HCl = 94%) compared to the membrane fabricated using TMC crosslinker (BCD-TA-TMC@PSf). For the BCD-TA-TPC@PSf membrane, the flux was increased from 8 LMH (L/m2.h) to 36 LMH as the transmembrane pressure was increased from 5 bar to 25 bar.

The effect of artificial ageing on spruce (Picea abies), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), birch (Betula pendula), and sessile oak (Quercus petraea) wood surfaces were investigated using qualitative (total phenolic and total soluble carbohydrate content) chemical examination methods. During ageing (∑240h), the influence of surface chemistry modifications was monitored by contact angle measurements of polar, dispersive (distilled water), and dispersive (diiodomethane) liquids. The results clearly show the relation between the ratio of main chemical components of the wood surface layer and surface wettability during artificial radiation. The identified surface chemistry modifications cause more significant change in the contact angle of polar and dispersive liquid, relative to the change of dispersive liquid contact angle. Chemical changes of the wood surface layer are due to the degradation of the main wood components (cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin) which can be properly monitored by total phenolic (TPC) and total soluble carbohydrate content (TSCC) measurements.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and functional properties of "dedo-de-moça" 'BRS Mari' pepper fruits at different maturity stages, and determine the ideal harvest stage for fresh consumption. The pepper plants were grown in the experimental field of Embrapa Hortaliças (Brasília, DF, Brazil) in 2012, and their fruits were evaluated at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 days after anthesis (DAA) to determine the soluble solid content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), SS/TA ratio, color (hue angle and lightness), a, b, and total chlorophyll, total phenolic compounds (TPC), total antioxidant activity (TAA), and capsanthin. It was observed that SS content increased until 70 DAA, and TA increased until 50 DAA, with decrease at 80 DAA. The a and total chlorophyll decreased until 60 DAA. Values for chlorophyll b were high until 30 DAA, and then decreased. The values for hue angle and lightness decreased until 60 DAA, indicating a change from green to red in fruits external color, with small changes in color from 60 to 80 DAA. The TPC content increased until 60 DAA, and then small increases occurred until 80 DAA. The AA increased as the fruit ripened, and the capsanthin content increased until 70 DAA. These results indicated that the ideal stage for harvest of the "dedo-de-moça" 'BRS Mari' pepper fruits is at 70 days after anthesis, when they also have a full development of red color in the fruit epidermis.

The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), in which two sheets of monolayer graphene are precisely stacked at a specific angle, has opened up a plethora of grand new opportunities in the field of topology, superconductivity, strange metal, and other strongly correlated effects. This review will focus on the various forms of quantum phases in MATBG revealed through quantum transport measurements. The goal is to highlight the uniqueness and current understanding of the various phases, especially how electronic interaction plays a role in them, as well as open questions in regard to the phase diagram.

Category: Bunion Introduction/Purpose: An arch collapse model has been described for a multitude of foot and ankle problems that is based on a gastrocnemius equinus contracture producing a predictable collapse that has been described in five distinct phases. Previous studies have evaluated the presence of pes planovlagus in hallux valgus patients and concluded that this is a rare occurance. The Grand Rapids arch collapse model reviews adult foot pathology and believes there is a link between bunions and flatfeet. We wanted to evaluate patients with flatfeet and determine if they had an associated bunion deformity. Based upon the arch collapse model, there should be a significant number of flatfeet with an associated bunion deformity and our goal was to see if this proved to be true. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the radiographs of patients diagnosed with a flatfoot based upon their ICD 9 and 10 codes in the senior author’s practice. For each patient, we used standard anteroposterior and lateral foot radiographs obtained on all new patients. Initially, we had 254 feet but had to exclude 93 feet due to inadequate radiographs, normal radiographs (normal meary’s angle and talonavicular coverage angle) or in patients who already had surgical procedures to the foot. This left 161 feet radiographs for review. We then measured the Meary’s angle on the lateral images and the talonavicular coverage angle, hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle and sesamoid position on the anteroposterior radiographs. Results: Of the 161 feet that remained in the study, only 6 feet (3.7%) had no radiographic evidence of a bunion based upon sesamoid position, hallux valgus angle or the intermetatarsal angle. We did find a correlation with the severity of the flatfoot based upon the Meary’s angle and the talonavicular coverage angle with the severity of the bunion deformity defined by the sesamoid position, hallux valgus angle and the intermetatarsal angle. As the flatfoot got worse, the bunion did so as well. Conclusion: Our findings would seem to fit with the Grand Rapids arch collapse model. The hypermobility of the first ray that creates the bunion deformity then allows the arch to ultimately collapse. It also does not seem to contradict what has been found previously. Earlier studies showed a low association between patients with bunions who also had flatfeet. This would make sense as the deformity may not have progressed to the flatfoot yet. However, in our study the deformity has already progressed to a flatfoot and almost all have some radiographic evidence of a bunion.

The aim of this study is to establish the dry aging period of beef loin in an electric field refrigeration system. Beef loins (Korea quality grade 2) were dry aged at 0, −1, and −2 °C temperature in an electric field refrigeration system (air velocity, 5 ± 2 m/s) and aging stopped as the value of TPC reached 7 log CFU/g. Samples were examined by aging yield, trimming yield, pH, color, water holding capacity (WHC), cooking yield, shear force, total plate count (TPC), 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN). The results for aging yield, trimming yield, redness, yellowness, and chroma decreased with increasing the dry aging period. Contrariwise, those for pH, lightness, hue angle, WHC, and cooking yield increased with the dry aging period. In shear force, the lowest value occurred at four weeks at all temperatures. The results for TPC, TBARS, and VBN increased with aging period, and VBN at 6 weeks at 0 °C and 9 weeks at −1 °C exceed the standard value (20 mg/100 g), while dry aging temperature had an effect on physico-chemical and storage properties by lower temperatures showed slower progress. Therefore, dry aging on an electric field refrigerate system can be used until 4 weeks at 0 °C, 8 weeks at −1 °C, and 10 weeks at −2 °C. However, considering physico-chemical properties, 4 weeks at every temperature is suitable for manufacturing soft dry-aged beef loin.

The purpose of this study was to investigate hip net joint moments in the gesture and support legs in grand rond de jambe en l'air en dehors. Two groups of dancers, skilled (N = 8) and novice (N = 6), performed grand rond de jambe en l'air at two different vertical leg angles: 90° and 105°. Three-dimensional motion data and ground reaction force data were collected. Hip net joint moments were computed through standard inverse dynamics procedures and were normalized to each participant's mass. Normalized peak hip joint moments in both the gesture and support leg were used as the dependent variables; the independent variables were the skill level and the demand (vertical angle for the rond de jambe at 90° and 105°). A two-way mixed-design ANOVA (2 groups x 2 conditions) was used (p < .05) with the group and demand as the between and within factors, respectively. The hip joint moments of the support leg were consistently larger than the matching moments of the gesture leg. However, as the demand level increased the peak hip joint moments of the gesture leg hip showed minor changes, the support leg moments decreased. It was concluded that muscular strength is not a limiting factor for the novice dancers and that an increased demand (vertical leg angle) actually puts smaller burden on the support leg hip. Increased pelvis movement (demonstrated by the skilled dancers) facilitated the range of motion of the gesture leg without increasing joint moment cost. The hip abductor moments were identified as im-portant components in performing grand rond de jambe en l'air.
