Thesis (MTech (Chemical Engineering))--Cape Technikon, 2000.
The large quantities of wood chips produced at mines from damaged underground timber contain gold that cannot be completely recovered by cyanidation. A fungus that can degrade a portion of the wood matrix will allow the gold that was previously locked up, to come into contact with the cyanide solution during beneficiation, thereby improving recoveries. The fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium produces enzymes that use the organic compounds found in lignin as substrate. Consequently, the fungus is able to selectively break down lignin, which is one of the major components of wood. Chips sampled from Vaal Reef Mine contained between 2 and 5 mg/kg gold. The main source of gold in the chips was determined to be impregnated gold-bearing ore and discrete gold particles. Direct cyanidation resulted in around 60 per cent recovery prior to biological treatment. Despite relatively high weight losses caused to the chips as a result of treatment with Phanerochaete chrysosporium gold recovery only increased 10 per cent after 4 weeks treatment compared to direct recovery without treatment.

The treatability of six Malaysian timbers namely Red Balau (Shorea guiso), Kapur (Dryobafanops aromatica), Kasai (Pometia pinnata), Kulim (Scorodocarpus borneensis), Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) and Keruing (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus) using the applied pressure processes (oscillating pressure, conventional Bethell and a modified Bethell process) was investigated. Treatments were carried out with a commercial water-borne copper-chromearsenic (CCA) preservative, known as Celcure-AP. The conventional Bethell process was the most effective method of wood treatment followed by the modified Bethell and the oscillating pressure process. While sufficient preservative retention and absorption was achieved in Kempas and Keruing to meet the Malaysian Standard MS 386 : 1986 specifications for exterior timber used in ground contact, the other four timbers - Red Balau, Kapur, Kasai and Kulim did not fulfil this requirement, even when treated at the most extreme treatment conditions. Using the three pressure processes, seasoning period and treatment time were found to have significant effects on preservative retention and penetration in all timber species. Investigations into the effect of three pretreatment procedures - steaming, incising and ponding to improve the treatability of the six timber species were carried out. Incising was the most effective pretreatment procedure in enhancing the treatability of these timbers. However, at the highest incising density employed (4,500 incisions/m2), it was still not possible to treat Red Balau, Kapur, Kasai and Kulim timber to achieve satisfactory target preservative retention and penetration. The less effective incising procedure was due mainly to the low incising density used. The possibility of improving the treatability of these four timber species further using higher incising densities and other methods of inCising pretreatment is discussed. Steaming, incising and ponding pretreatments had a pronounced effect on the strength properties of timbers based on reduction of their modulus of elasticity (M.D. E.), modulus of rupture (M.O.A.), compressive strength and hardness. The highest strength losses were observed in timbers that had been ponded for 6 months. Significant strength losses were also observed in incised and steamed timbers, but the magnitudes were lower than the 6 month ponding regime. This was attributed to low incising density and the short steaming period. The performance of Celcure-AP in the six timber species was evaluated in laboratory and field tests. In addition, a copper-azole formulation (Tanalith-3485) was also evaluated on Kempas timber. Laboratory tests involved exposure of treated wood blocks to five decay fungi - Pycnoporus sanguineus, Trametes versicolor, Coniophora puteana, Gloeophyllum trabeum and Oligoporus placenta. The less durable timbers - Kempas and Keruing needed a higher loading of Celcure-AP in order to give equal performance compared to the more durable timbers - Red Balau, Kapur, Kasai and Kulim. Based on copper retention in treated samples, a higher loading of Tanalith-3485 was required in Kempas to achieve comparable results to Celcure-AP treated samples. However, the concentration levels of Tanalith-3485 used in the present study were sufficient to afford protection to Kempas stakes exposed for 36 months in the field test. A longer exposure period is however, recommended for a full evaluation of timber/preservative combinations against wood deteriorating organisms under Malaysian conditions. In the field test, soft rot fungi were the main causal organisms in the attack of timbers in test site A (fungal test bed), while in test site B stake failure was due mainly to termite attack.

Many buildings and bridges built on timber pile foundations still stand in France. The bridges on rivers “Loire” and “Seine”, the castle of Chambord, the “Grand Palais” in Paris are a few examples of French monuments founded on timber piles. However, despite a large number of buildings and bridges constructed in France, the feedback on the residual bearing capacity and the degradation of timber piles is scarce. The main objectives of this work, which is part of the “Pieux Bois” national research project, are, on the one hand, to define a methodology in order to analyze timber pile foundations degradation, and on the other hand, to propose a design method of timber piles based on the results obtained from pressuremeter tests. The state of the art made in the national project identified about one hundred French bridges built on timber piles between the Middle Ages and the industrial era. They are mainly located in basins of rivers. Pathologies were observed on bridges and reinforcement solutions were implemented in order to avoid any future problems. The methodology for the inspection of timber pile foundations given in the Dutch guide was applied to investigate the degradation of timber piles under an existing railway bridge near Bordeaux. Series of laboratory tests were carried out on soil (silt) and wood with a direct shear box. The mechanical properties of the interface were studied. Shear tests between mortar, steel and silt were also carried out. The influence of material roughness and silt moisture content on the shear strength properties of the interface was examined. In addition, timber piles were driven and loaded on two experimental sites. The timber piles were instrumented with removable extensometers. The results of these load tests were included in a database which contained timber piles loading test results published in literature. The approach adopted to establish the design method of deep foundation based on the results obtained from pressuremeter tests described in the new national standard for application of Eurocode 7 was modified. A new model of calculation of timber piles shaft and base resistance driven in clay silt and sand gravels was determined with statistical studies from this database

Resumo:
Track maintenance represents over 20 percent of Australian railway operating costs. Thus there is considerable incentive for rail corporations to reduce their maintenance costs. There is considerable research directed at improving track structures and maintenance techniques to reduce the track maintenance expenditure. However, there is little work on the planning of track maintenance that can be applied to Australian railway operations. This research reviews maintenance planning and finds that models currently available are empirical models reliant mainly on historical track condition data from specific rail organisations. No such models are yet in use Australian railway operations. Leading models utilise expert systems to decide maintenance activities rather than optimise the net benefits of maintenance. As such, these models are ineffective at assessing what if scenarios of changed track operating conditions. Internationally, current maintenance practice is to plan maintenance on professional judgement without the use of models to aid decisions. Currently, only a minority of larger rail corporations record sufficient track and maintenance data needed for maintenance planning modeling. A new track maintenance model has been formulated based on a mechanistic track degradation approach. This allows the model to operate without historical track maintenance condition data and hence utilise a minimal amount of track maintenance data. The model assesses the net benefit of maintenance by simulating the costs of planned and unplanned maintenance, as well as train operating costs as they are affected by track condition. A prototype computer program has been developed that has shown that the model is capable of assessing a cost efficient intervention level for tamping and resleepering maintenance. The model's independence from historical data means it is applicable to any rail operator and is capable of assessing what if scenarios on the impact of changed track, traffic or cost conditions. The model has been subjected to testing that has identified areas for its further development. These areas are the modeling of defective sleeper clusters and of sleeper ages, also the development and inclusion of a ballast degradation and maintenance sub-model. Further work for the developed prototype computer application include improving the program efficiency, expanding the number of iteration cycles used in the simulation and recording a track asset value during degradation and maintenance of the track

Reliability characteristics of new devices are usually demonstrated by life testing. When lifetime data are sparse, as is often the case with highly reliable devices, expensive devices, and devices for which accelerated life testing is not feasible, reliability models that are based on a combination of degradation and lifetime data represent an important practical approach. This thesis presents reliability models based on the combination of degradation and lifetime data or degradation data alone, with and without the presence of covariates. Statistical inference methods associated with the models are also developed.
The degradation process is assumed to follow a Wiener process. Failure is defined as the first passage of this process to a fixed barrier. The degradation data of a surviving item are described by a truncated Wiener process and lifetimes follow an inverse Gaussian distribution. Models are developed for three types of data structures that are often encountered in reliability studies, terminal point data (a combination of degradation and lifetime data) and mixed data (an extended case of terminal point data); conditional degradation data; and covariate data.
Maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) are derived for the parameters of each model. Inferences about the parameters are based on asymptotic properties of the MLEs and on the likelihood ratio method. An analysis of deviance is presented and approximate pivotal quantities are derived for the drift and variance parameters. Predictive density functions for the lifetime and the future degradation level of either a surviving item or a new item are obtained using empirical Bayes methods. Case examples are given to illustrate the applications of the models.

This thesis deals with the German attempts to take control over timber resources in the Baltic area between 1840 and 1914. Focused on the trade in the Vistula and Warta river basins, it shows how the rising German economy managed to make the local forests into its backyard by securing cheap and stable access to timber resources. German firms progressively achieved trade dominance by developing transport technologies and reinforcing their financial and organizational capacities. They also managed to take advantage of the local economic and political weaknesses. Through ecological and economic explanation of timber extraction and processing, the thesis underlines the role played by foreign timber in the preservation of the German forests. It also describes the impact of this process on the local population and environment. Finally, the thesis advocates for a truly global history of the German forest

Resumo:
The question of post-mortem interval (PMI) or time since death is often the most sought after piece of information associated with a medical death investigation. Based on the observation that DNA degradation disproportionately affects the analysis of larger genetic loci, it was proposed that DNA degradation, as a result of autolysis or putrefaction, could prove suitable as a potential rate-of-change indicator of PMI. Nine randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis primers and three sets of directed amplification primers were evaluated to determine their suitability for use in assessing the degree of DNA fragmentation in tissue samples. They were assessed for amplicon specificity, total DNA target sensitivity, allele monomorphism and the observance of degradation-based profile changes. Markers meeting the requisite criteria were then used to assess a range samples degraded under controlled and uncontrolled conditions. Tissue samples collected from seven domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) were incubated under controlled laboratory or uncontrolled field conditions to produce samples simulating those potentially collected in a forensic case. DNA samples isolated from these specimens were then analyzed at those loci which had been determined to meet the requisite criteria. Collectively, data generated from these analyses indicate that genetic profiles generated by this approach can provide information useful for estimating the post-mortem interval, with the locus and amplicons used being most useful during the first 72 hours after death.

Resumo:
A major concern for geotechnical engineers is the ability to predict how a soil will react to large ground motions produced by earthquakes. Of all the different types of soil, liquefiable soils present some of the greatest challenges. The ability to quantify the degradation of a soil's shear modulus as it undergoes liquefaction would help engineers design more reliably and economically. This thesis uses ground motions recorded by an array of downhole accelerometers on Port Island, Japan, during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, to quantify the shear modulus of sand as it liquefies. It has been shown that the shear modulus of sand decreases significantly as it liquefies, apparently decreasing in proportion to the increasing excess pore water pressure ratio (Ru). When completely liquefied, the shear modulus of sand (Ru = 1.0) for a relative density of 40 to 50% is approximately 15% of the high-strain modulus of the sand in its non-liquefied state, or 1% of its initial low-strain value. Presented in this thesis is an approach to modeling the shear modulus degradation of sand as it liquefies. This approach, called the "degrading shear modulus backbone curve method" reasonably predicts the hysteretic shear stress behavior of the liquefied sand. The shear stresses and ground accelerations computed using this method reasonably matches those recorded at the Port Island Downhole Array (PIDA) site. The degrading shear modulus backbone method is recommended as a possible method for conducting ground response analyses at sites with potentially liquefiable soils.

Resumo:
Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to axonal damage and limits the ability of the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. Several bioengineered approaches have been developed for the recovery of SCI. Among these techniques, degradable guidance tubes have shown promising results. However, design of nerve guide tubes requires several design considerations and has been a significant challenge. To assess the efficacy of a prototypical implanted nerve guide tubes, it is essential to perform continuous monitoring. In this respect, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most reliable imaging techniques as it offers the ability to achieve extraordinary high temporal and spatial resolution in addition to its non-invasive features. In spite of the excellent image quality of non-enhanced MRI various types of contrast agents have been developed to further enhance the contrast and allow improved visualization. The MRI contrast agents principally work by shortening the T1 or T2 relaxation times of protons located nearby. The presented study was intended to evaluate the in vitro degradation of the nerve guide tubes made of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). PLGA tubes incorporated with different concentrations of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) were scanned by MRI 3T on weekly basis during the degradation period. Spin-echo (SE) sequence with various echo times (TEs) ranged from 13.3 to 314.4 msec was applied. T2 mapping was computed using in-house algorithm developed in Matlab. Least square fit was used to find the slope of the decay curve by plotting log intensity on the y-axis and echo time on the x-axis. The average T2 values were calculated. Mass loss and water uptake of the degrading tubes were also measured weekly. Moreover, the micro-structural changes of the tubes were investigated using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The MRI results showed that the concentration of SPIO affects the signal intensity of the T2 weighted images reducing the T2 relaxation time value. Accordingly, a linear correlation between SPIO concentration and T2 relaxation time was found. At the beginning of degradation, the SPIO nanoparticles were trapped within the polymeric network. Therefore, water penetration was the predominant factor affecting the T2 relaxation times. At week 5, a significant mass loss was observed. From this stage onwards, the trapped SPIO were released from the polymeric network increasing T2 relaxation time dramatically. According to SEM images, the size of the pores in PLGA guide tubes was increased with the degradation. Approaching the end of degradation, shrinkage of the tubes was observed and the degraded nerve guide tubes were shown to be collapsed. Similar shape variation was observed in T2 weighted MR images. In summary, this study provided an approach to non-invasive monitoring of degradation behavior of nerve guide tubes using contrast enhancement. The developed technique is of great importance since it opened an insight to non-invasive monitoring of tissue engineered scaffolds for in vivo studies.

Resumo:
Forensic anthropologists rely on forensic evidence to estimate the postmortem interval of a decedent. This may include the study of the degree of deterioration of the human body, the life stage of insects, and the degradation of associated material evidence. Material evidence comes in many forms, and certain taphonomic processes will affect the material and must be considered when making inferences about a PMI. These include variables such as the characteristics of the soil, microorganisms, and the presence of a decaying organic material. Previous research has undertaken studies in how fabric degrades over time; however, there is no standard methodology in use. The purpose of this research project is to establish a comprehensive scoring system and description standard after analyzing the degradation of four different fabric types. This will be useful for future studies in need of a standard methodology. In addition, the methods used in this project can be applied to actual forensic cases. After retrieval, the fabric type with the highest degradation was the cotton with about 1/3 of all cotton fabric swatches demonstrating more than 50% total degradation. For all fabric types, swatches that were positioned flat tended to degrade more than those that were positioned crumpled. Cotton fabric swatches degraded more in Trench 1 and Trench 2 than the Ground Surface, however, all other fabric types demonstrated slightly more degradation on the Ground Surface than the other two Areas. Soil moisture fluctuated the most on the Ground Surface while Trench 1 and Trench 2 were able to retain more water in the soil. Overall, cotton was the only fabric type to degrade significantly enough to show how it degrades over time, while the other fabric types have longer degradation intervals that must be studied further.

Resumo:
The long-term performance of stabilized polyolefins in different environments was studied with focus on antioxidant consumption and migration. Plaques of linear polyethylene (LPE) and branched polyethylene (BPE) were stabilized with Santonox® R (4,4'-Thiobis(6-tert-butyl-3-methylphenol)), Irganox® 1081 (2,2’-Thiobis(4-methyl-6-tertbutylphenol)), or Lowinox® 22M46 (2,2’-Methylenebis(6-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol)). The samples were aged in water and nitrogen at 75, 90 and 95°C. Antioxidant concentration profiles were obtained by oxidation induction time (OIT) measurements using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The very flat antioxidant concentration profiles of the plaques exposed to non-aqueous media indicated that the migration of antioxidant to the surrounding medium was controlled by the low evaporation rate at the sample boundary. The samples of BPE and Santonox R were also exposed to air and water saturated with air. The similarity of the antioxidant concentration profiles of Santonox R obtained after ageing in air and nitrogen suggested that the fraction of antioxidant oxidized is negligible in comparison with the loss of antioxidant by migration to the surrounding media. The loss of Santonox R in samples exposed to water saturated with air was faster than for the samples exposed to oxygen-free water. This was due to increased mass transport of the antioxidant from the polymer phase boundary to the water phase when oxygen was present. An unexpected higher migration rate from LPE than from BPE was proposed to be due to the low boundary loss rate in BPE, caused by the presence of a thin liquid-like (oligomeric) surface layer developed during ageing. A quantitative relationship was found between the boundary loss rate to water and the polarity of antioxidants. The antioxidant diffusivities were approximately equal in LPE and BPE, indicating that the constraining effect of the crystals on the non-crystalline fraction did not affect the antioxidant molecules. Results obtained by liquid chromatography of extracts confirmed that the gradual decrease in OIT with increasing ageing time was due to migration of antioxidant to the surrounding medium. Pipes of high-density polyethylene stabilized with hindered phenols and phosphites were exposed to chlorinated water at elevated temperatures. OIT showed that the stabilizing system was rapidly chemically consumed by the action of chlorinated water. Size exclusion chromatography and DSC showed extensive polymer degradation strictly confined to the immediate surface of the unprotected inner wall material and to the amorphous phase of the semicrystalline polymer. The rate of growth of the layer of highly degraded polymer was constant. Pipes of isotactic polybutene-1 were pressure-tested in chlorinated water at a controlled pH, and the lifetime was assessed as a function of temperature and chlorine content. The lifetime shortening in chlorinated water was significant even at relatively low chlorine contents, 0.5 ppm. A further increase of chlorine content led to only a moderate shortening of the lifetime. The temperature dependence of the lifetime data obeyed the Arrhenius law. The decrease of the antioxidant concentration was independent of the chlorine concentration in the range of 0.5-1.5 ppm. The time to reach depletion of the antioxidant system could be predicted by linear extrapolation.

This thesis is dedicated to describe, predict and prevent system failures. It consists of four issues: i) stochastic degradation modeling, ii) prognosis of system failures, iii) failure level estimation and iv) maintenance optimization. The time-dependent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process is introduced for degradation modeling. The time-dependent OU process is interesting from its statistical properties on controllable mean, variance and correlation. Based on such a process, the first passage time is considered as the system failure time to a pre-set failure level. Different methods are then proposed for the prognosis of system failures, which can be classified into three categories: analytical approximations, numerical algorithms and Monte-Carlo simulation methods. Moreover, the failure level is estimated from the lifetime distribution by solving inverse first passage problems. This is to make up the potential gap between failure and degradation records to reinforce the prognosis process via first passage problems. From the prognosis of system failures, the maintenance optimization for a continuously monitored system is performed. By introducing first passage problems, the arrangement of preventive maintenance is simplified. The maintenance decision rule is based on a virtual failure level, which is solution of an optimization problem for proposed objective functions

Land use / land cover (LULC) change assessment is getting more consideration by global environmental change studies as land use change is exposing dryland environments for transitions and higher rates of resource depletion. The semiarid regions of northwestern Ethiopia are not different as land use transition is the major problem of the region. However, there is no satisfactory study to quantify the change process of the region up to now. Hence, spatiotemporal change analysis is vital for understanding and identification of major threats and solicit solutions for sustainable management of the ecosystem. LULC change studies focus on understanding the patterns, processes and dynamics of land use transitions and driving forces of change. The change processes in dryland ecosystems can be either seasonal, gradual or abrupt changes of random or systematic change processes that result in a pattern or permanent transition in land use. Identification of these processes of change and their type supports adoption of monitoring options and indicate possible measures to be taken to safeguard this dynamic ecosystem. This study examines the spatiotemporal patterns of LULC change, temporal trends in climate variables and the insights of the communities on change patterns of ecosystems. Landsat imagery, MODIS NDVI, CRU temperature, TAMSAT rainfall and socio-ecological field data were used in order to identify change processes. LULC transformation was monitored using support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. A cross-tabulation matrix assessment was implemented in order to assess the total change of land use categories based on net change and swap change. In addition, the pattern of change was identified based on expected gain and loss under a random process of gain and loss, respectively. Breaks For Additive Seasonal and Trend (BFAST) analysis was employed for determining the time, direction and magnitude of seasonal, abrupt and trend changes within the time series datasets. In addition, Man Kendall test statistic and Sen’s slope estimator were used for assessing long term trends on detrended time series data components. Distributed lag (DL) model was also adopted in order to determine the time lag response of vegetation to the current and past rainfall distribution. Over the study period of 1972- 2014, there is a significant change in LULC as evidenced by a significant increase in size of cropland of about 53% and a net loss of over 61% of woodland area. The period 2000-2014 has shown a sharp increase of cropland and a sharp decline of woodland areas. Proximate causes include agricultural expansion and excessive wood harvesting; and underlying causes of demographic factor, economic factors and policy contributed the most to an overuse of existing natural resources. In both the observed and expected proportion of random process of change and of systematic changes, woodland has shown the highest loss compared to other land use types. The observed transition and expected transition under random process of gain of woodland to cropland is 1.7%, implies that cropland systematically gains to replace woodland. The comparison of the difference between observed and expected loss under random process of loss also showed that when woodland loses cropland systematically replaces it. The assessment of magnitude and time of breakpoints on climate data and NDVI showed different results. Accordingly, NDVI analysis demonstrated the existence of breakpoints that are statistically significant on the seasonal and long term trends. There is a positive trend, but no breakpoints on the long term precipitation data during the study period. The maximum temperature also showed a positive trend with two breakpoints which are not statistically significant. On the other hand, there is no seasonal and trend breakpoints in minimum temperature, though there is an overall positive trend along the study period. The Man-Kendall test statistic for long term average Tmin and Tmax showed significant variation where as there is no significant trend within the long term rainfall distribution. The lag regression between NDVI and precipitation indicated a lag of up to forty days. This proves that the vegetation growth in this area is not primarily determined by the current precipitation rather with the previous forty days rainfall. The combined analysis showed declining vegetation productivity and a loss of vegetation cover that contributed for an easy movement of dust clouds during the dry period of the year. This affects the land condition of the region, resulting in long term degradation of the environment

Arctic rivers transport 31-42 Tg organic carbon (OC) each year to the Arctic Ocean, which is equal to 10% of the global riverine OC discharge. Since the Arctic Ocean only holds approximately 1% of the global ocean volume, the influence of terrestrially derived organic carbon (OCter) in the Arctic Ocean is relatively high. Despite the global importance of this region the behavior of the, by far largest fraction of the OCter, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in Arctic and sub-arctic estuaries is still a matter of debate. This thesis describes data originating from field cruises in Arctic and sub-arctic estuaries and coastal areas with the aim to improve the understanding of the fate of OCter in these areas, with specific focus on DOC. All presented studies indicate that DOCter and terrestrially derived particulate organic carbon (POCter) are subjected to substantial degradation in high-latitude estuaries, as shown by the non-conservative behavior of DOC in the East Siberian Arctic Shelf Seas (ESAS) (paper I) and the even more rapid degradation of POC in the same region (paper II). The removals of OCter in Arctic shelf seas were further supported by multiple isotope studies (paper III and IV), which showed that a use of 13C/12C in both OC and DIC, together with 34S/32S is a powerful tool to describe the sources and fate of OCter in estuaries and coastal seas. High-latitude estuaries play a key role in the coupling between terrestrial and marine carbon pools. In contrast to the general perception, this thesis shows that they are not only transportation areas for DOCter from rivers to the ocean, but are also active sites for transformation, degradation and sedimentation of DOCter, as well as for POCter. In a rapidly changing climate, the importance of these areas for the coupling between inorganic and organic carbon pools cannot be underestimated.

Cattle ranching is the main land use activity in Brazil, with about 175 million hectares of cultivated pasture, with at least 50% of these being with some degree of degradation. Degraded pastures present low biomass production of little nutritional value, which leads to low animal weight gain in the rainy season and loss of weight in the dry season. Due to its low productive efficiency, if these areas were identified and recovered, they could be intensified, freeing pasture areas for other uses. In this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the pasture vigor and the potential livestock intensification for Brazil. In order to obtain the vigor and productivity of Brazilian pastures, a Pasture Strength Index (PVI) was generated by integrating the α (intercept) and β (slope) coefficients, derived from the linear regression of the vegetation index (NDVI) over time (2000 to 2017). Pastures with low PVI values were located throughout the Caatinga biome, in the MATOPIBA region of the Cerrado biome, in the eastern portion of Mato Grosso do Sul, southeastern of Mato Grosso and northwestern of Goiás. These areas are associated to regions of higher water deficit, as shown by the relationship between the PVI and the total annual precipitation (R² = 0.40) and evapotranspiration. For the Cerrado biome, the PVI showed high spatial correspondence with the green biomass and percent green cover. Green biomass and percent green cover were generated from extrapolation of field data to the spatial resolution of MODIS images. The areas with lower PVI values in the Cerrado biome also had lower green biomass (< 6000 kg ha-1 ) and percent green cover (< 47%) during the growing season. Considering the accumulated green biomass in the growing season, it was observed that the Cerrado’s cattle stocking rate could increase from 1.11 AU ha-1 (real cattle stocking rate) to 2.56 AU ha-1 (potential cattle stocking rate). The real cattle stocking rate in 2015 was generated through the integration of the 2006 Livestock Census data with the Livestock Production data for the year 2015. The potential cattle stocking rate was obtained from the relationship between the forage production (green biomass and gross primary productivity - GPP) and the forage demand of one animal unit (1 AU = 450 kg). The potential of intensification was determined from the difference between the actual and the potential cattle stocking rates. For all of Brazil, the cattle stocking rate in 2015 was 0.97 AU ha-1 , reaching a potential of 3.60 AU ha-1 , that is, the potential for intensification was 2.63 AU ha-1 . The greatest potential of intensification occurred in the South region (3.62 AU ha-1 ), and the lowest in the North (2.13 AU ha-1 ) and Northeast (2.22 AU ha-1 ) regions of Brazil.

In this work, a solution of peroxide crosslinked styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) has been transformed to a self-degradable gel system by adding hydroperoxide as a degradation agent to the formulation. Dynamic rheometry was employed to calculate the relaxation time with a new method presented along with a full review of methods for calculation of the relaxation time spectrum from oscillatory rheometry. In-situ and ex-situ experiments were performed to evaluate the evolution of crosslinking and degradation reactions. Structural changes in the polymer network were visible within the relaxation time spectra. The degradation kinetics of styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) in solution was studied in anaerobic conditions and the characterization was performed by multiangle light scattering coupled to size exclusion chromatography (SEC-MALS). Using population balance equations, it was possible to calculate the kinetic constants for thermal and thermooxidative degradation. Different formulations of these oil-based self-degradable gels have been evaluated as possible diverting agents during oil wells operations. The time dependent rheological behavior of the gels was measured to verify polymer crosslinking, maximum gel strength and gel degradation, all of which can be adjusted by varying formulation depending on operation needs. Single core tests were performed to evaluate pressure resistance as a function of gel strength and gel degradation. Parallel cores tests were also carried out to validate diversion efficiency and mobility restoration

The forest degradation is a change of the structure and the composition of flora and fauna, which leads to a loss of biodiversity, of production of goods and services and an increased vulnerability to weather hazards and fires. This process concerns large areas in the tropics, particularly in agricultural frontier where primary forest is subject to timber extraction, fire and fragmentation. Remote sensing is used to assess the magnitude and the extent of forest degradation. However, the methodologies available are still insufficient. The scientific challenge is to develop methods adapted to large areas to analyze the effect of different disturbances on the trajectories followed by the forest cover. It is also to identify different intensities of degradation following disturbances events. This is a prerequisite for defining and implementing appropriate management plans. The first axis of this work aims to map annually the extent of the disturbances, to identify the main types of disturbances and to characterize the restoration trajectory of the photosynthetic activity. This work is based on time series of Landsat images processed using CLASlite software. The aggregation of the annual coverages resulting from treatments with CLASlite also made it possible to constitute an indicator of degradation resulting from the accumulation of disturbance processes over several years. The second axis aims to evaluate the evolution of the forest sensitivity to drought as a function of its degradation and to build a degradation indicator. The approach uses MODIS images and TRMM precipitation data. This work is implemented in the municipality of Paragominas (state of Pará, Brazil)

Technical systems are prone to deterioration. This leads to negative consequences like break-downs. Maintenance actions are executed in order to transfer technical systems back into healthy states. If break downs occur suddenly, the consequences can be dramatic. Therefore, it is reasonable to schedule maintenance actions based on health-state predictions. Thereby, health state predictions are impeded by the fact that technical systems often deteriorate variably, depending on certain stress factors. Furthermore, the effects of variable deterioration behavior can be hidden by system specific behavior. Thus, approaches are shown which integrate variable deterioration behavior into healthstate predictions while influences caused by the system specific behavior are considered. Consequently, maintenance actions can be scheduled more efficiently which spares resources and reduces costs

Recent years have seen SiC MOSFET reach the industrial market. This type of device is particularly adapted to the design of power electronics equipment with high efficiency and high reliability capable to operate in high ambient temperature. Nevertheless the question of the SiC MOSFET reliability has to be addressed prior to considering the implementation of such devices in an aeronautic application. The failure mechanisms linked to the gate oxide of the SiC MOSFET have for a long time prevented the introduction of the device. In this manuscript we propose to study the reliability of the first generation of SiC MOSFET. First, the mechanism known as the Time–Dependent Dielectric Breakdown is studied through experimental results extracted from literature. Our study shows the successful application of a Weibull law to model the time-to-failure distribution extracted from the accelerated tests. The results show also a significant improvement of the SiC MOSFET structure with respect to this phenomenon. In a second step, the impact of the threshold voltage instability is quantified through accelerated tests known as High Temperature Gate Bias. The collected degradation data are modeled using a non-homogeneous Gamma process. This approach allows taking into account the variability between devices tested under the same conditions. Acceleration factors have been proposed with respect to temperature and gate voltage. Eventually the study delivers a primary estimation of the remaining useful lifetime of the SiC MOSFET in a typical aeronautic application

Resumo:
The need for energy efficient, clean and quiet, energy conversion devices for mobile and stationary applications has presented proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells as a potential energy source. The use of PEM fuel cells for automotive and other transient applications, where there are rapid changes in load, presents a need for better understanding of transient behavior. In particular at low humidity operations; one of the factors critical to the performance and durability of fuel cell systems is water transport in various fuel cell layers, including water absorption in membrane. An essential aspect to optimization of transient behavior of fuel cells is a fundamental understanding of response of fuel cell system to dynamic changes in load and operating parameters. This forms the first objective of the dissertation. An insight in to the time scales associated with various transport phenomena will be discussed in detail. In the second component on the study, the effects of membrane properties on the dynamic behavior of the fuel cells are analyzed with focus on membrane dry-out for low humidity operations. The mechanical behavior of the membrane is directly related to the changes in humidity levels in membrane and is explored as a part third objective of the dissertation. Numerical studies addressing this objective will be presented. Finally, porous media undergoing physical deposition (or erosion) are common in many applications, including electrochemical systems such as fuel cells (for example, electrodes, catalyst layer s, etc.) and batteries. The transport properties of these porous media are a function of the deposition and the change in the porous structures with time. A dynamic fractal model is introduced to describe such structures undergoing deposition and, in turn, to evaluate the changes in their physical properties as a function of the deposition.

This thesis aims to study the influence of fast charging on the aging of lithium batteries, and its impact on the performances of electric vehicles as part of a postal use. The first part is devoted to the modeling of lithium batteries with an equivalent electric circuit model, whose parameters could be identified using linear characterization tests. The second part is dedicated to the study of aging, and results in an aging estimator using data collected from accelerated aging tests programs. Then the postal usage is studied, and a power profile representative of the actual load on the battery is provided. The latter was used to validate the model of the battery in the field of postal use. Then the postal use is studied, and a current profile representative of the real behavior of the battery is provided. This profile was used to validate the model of the battery in the postal use domain. Then a model of electric vehicles is presented, it integrates the battery model, which can simulates the aging state of the battery using the ageing estimator. Finally, the various possible strategies of recharge are listed and compared, which leads to conclusions about their influences on aging of batteries, and the vehicles performance

In the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) forest of the Landes de Gascogne (south-western France), pine mortality due to the root rot fungus Armillaria ostoyae (Basidiomycete) has been increasing over the last 30 years. The first cases of this disease were reported a few years after a major change in land use which occurred in this region following the replacement of original moors by an intensively managed planted forest. Our aim was to understand the factors driving this disease emergence. For this, we investigated the spatial distribution of pathogen damage related to historical factors, estimated the variation in fungal traits related to parasitism and saprophytism and investigated the demographic history of A. ostoyae. The current distribution of A. ostoyae mortality appeared depending on the pre-existing forests, suggesting that A. ostoyae was commonly distributed in pre-existing forest areas which acted as a reservoir for the colonization of recent planted forests. The rhizomorphs production was significantly correlated with virulence, suggesting that this trait plays an important role in the parasitic stage of A. ostoyae, but no significant relationship between parasitism and saprophytism components was detected, which may suggest that there is no trade-off between these traits. Finally, the best demographic scenario to explain A. ostoyae population structure in the Landes forest is a two step scenario: there was first a decrease and then an expansion in the fungal population, which appeared to follow the dynamics of the host population. The generation time of A. ostoyae was estimated between 10 and 20 years

Resumo:
Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) constitute an important source of livelihood for most poor rural households and communities in Zimbabwe. NTFPs also serve as a vital livelihood safety net in times of hardship. An important feature of this dependence is that almost all NTFPs are deemed to have ‘public good’ characteristics, with no exclusive property rights. Consequently, extraction is often intense and exhaustive because of lack of alternative income sources, unreliable productivity and weak enforcement of institutional arrangements governing NTFPs use. In recent years, with HIV/AIDS rampant in Zimbabwe, there are indications of a rapid increase in the extraction of NTFPs, mostly from common property resources. Appropriate natural resources policies need to be based on comprehensive research, yet to date scant attention has been paid to understanding the role of NTFPs in mitigating the predicaments of HIV/AIDS-affected households in Zimbabwe. The main objective of this study was to determine the types of and need for natural resource management interventions to help ensure the sustainability of local responses to HIV/AIDS. The research focused on five communities of Sengwe Communal in the Chiredzi district, Zimbabwe. Multistage cluster sampling was used to select ten villages and households for the survey. Two villages from each community, representing the most and the least affected by epidemic were selected for each community using stratified random sampling. A cluster analysis was used to improve understanding of the challenges of rural livelihoods and how households diversify their livelihood strategies to cope with the various constraints. Five dominant groups based on their livelihood diversification patterns were identified : (1) smallholders/unskilled workers; (2) subsistence smallholder/non-timber forestry products harvesters; (3) crop production and non-timber forestry products extraction integrators; (4) commercial smallholders with regular off-farm employment; and (5) specialised commercial livestock producers. Multinomial logit model results showed that the level of education of the household head, the value of physical assets, cattle numbers and income, remittances, NTFPs income and economic shocks were the main determinants of these livelihood choices. Empirical evidence also revealed that households that were statistically significantly affected by HIV/AIDS economic shocks practised ‘distress-push’ diversification by extracting NTFPs. These results suggest that policy makers need to advise rural households on how to improve their risk management capacities and move from geographically untargeted investments in livelihood assets to a more integrated approach adapted to the asset base of individual households. Using panel data from 200 households in 2008 and 2009, regression models revealed that NTFPs extraction is an important ex-post coping mechanism for many HIV/AIDS-afflicted households. The results also revealed that the main determinants of livelihood strategy choices were differences in asset endowment, especially education, land and livestock and the impact of the shock. Asset constraints compelled diversification into lower-return activities such as NTFPs extraction. Findings from a comparative analysis of HIV/AIDS-afflicted and non-afflicted households showed that HIV/AIDS-afflicted households were relatively young, with relatively few physical and livestock assets. A fixed-effect Tobit model indicated a positive significant relationship between HIV staging and quantity of NTFPs extracted. The relatively young, poorly educated households with low household coping capacity in terms of livestock value relied more on the natural insurance of forests in buffering HIV/AIDS economic shocks. These results have important policy implications for development planners, conservationists and non-governmental organisations working in the region. There is a need for programmes that reduce pressure on forest resources, and improved access to education and health care, thus helping the poor to cope with the HIV/AIDS economic crisis. This study also examined the extent to which forest degradation is driven by existing common property management regimes, resource and user characteristics, ecological knowledge and marketing structure. A Principal Component Analysis indicated that the existence of agreed-upon rules governing usage (including costs of usage), enforcement of these rules, sanctions for rule violations that are proportional to the severity of rule violation, social homogeneity, and strong beliefs in ancestral spirits were the most important attributes determining effectiveness of local institutions in the management of Common Pool Resources (CPRs). Empirical results from an ordinary least regression analysis showed that resource scarcity, market integration index, and infrastructural development lead to greater forest resource degradation, while livestock income, high ecological knowledge, older households, and effective local institutional management of the commons reduce forest resource degradation. The results suggest that there is a need for adaptive local management systems that enhance ecological knowledge of users and regulates market structure to favour long-term livelihood securities of these forest-fringe communities.

"Defects and Statistical Degradation Analysis of Photovoltaic Power Plants". Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.40311.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
abstract: As the photovoltaic (PV) power plants age in the field, the PV modules degrade and generate visible and invisible defects. A defect and statistical degradation rate analysis of photovoltaic (PV) power plants is presented in two-part thesis. The first part of the thesis deals with the defect analysis and the second part of the thesis deals with the statistical degradation rate analysis. In the first part, a detailed analysis on the performance or financial risk related to each defect found in multiple PV power plants across various climatic regions of the USA is presented by assigning a risk priority number (RPN). The RPN for all the defects in each PV plant is determined based on two databases: degradation rate database; defect rate database. In this analysis it is determined that the RPN for each plant is dictated by the technology type (crystalline silicon or thin-film), climate and age. The PV modules aging between 3 and 19 years in four different climates of hot-dry, hot-humid, cold-dry and temperate are investigated in this study. In the second part, a statistical degradation analysis is performed to determine if the degradation rates are linear or not in the power plants exposed in a hot-dry climate for the crystalline silicon technologies. This linearity degradation analysis is performed using the data obtained through two methods: current-voltage method; metered kWh method. For the current-voltage method, the annual power degradation data of hundreds of individual modules in six crystalline silicon power plants of different ages is used. For the metered kWh method, a residual plot analysis using Winters’ statistical method is performed for two crystalline silicon plants of different ages. The metered kWh data typically consists of the signal and noise components. Smoothers remove the noise component from the data by taking the average of the current and the previous observations. Once this is done, a residual plot analysis of the error component is performed to determine the noise was successfully separated from the data by proving the noise is random.

Various biotic and abiotic agents are changing forests. Prolonged human activities substantially could cause not only different changes in forests but also could accelerate natural hazards in the Anthropocene. Despite several remote sensing-based research in forest changes, there is a need for a holistic study that could visualize different dimensions of anthropogenic-induced forest changes such as forest loss, forest fragmentation, and forest degradation. Besides, the effects of these changes require to be investigated in the natural hazards’ studies in forest regions. This research was accomplished for holistic assessing of long-term forest loss, forest fragmentation, and forest degradation induced by human activities such as sprawling residential areas and expanding road networks in northeast Iran. Moreover, it has investigated the significance of forest dynamics in analyzing of landslide susceptibility in the forest regions. The time series of Landsat data with the contribution of aerial photos were employed to investigate long-term forest changes in three spans from 1966 to 2016. The expansion of forest roads was extracted from a combination of satellite images and topographic maps. Both pixel– and object-based approaches were used for analyzing forest changes. The spatial autocorrelation indicators and spatial regression models were applied for visualizing patterns of forest changes and possible relationships between forest changes and the expansion of residential areas and road networks. Furthermore, the detection of old and new landslide events was accomplished through Sentinel-1 and -2 images and DEM derivatives using object-oriented random forest method. The significance of conditioning and triggering factors that control the susceptibility of protected and non-protected forests to landslides was explored using the object-based random forest approach as well. Key findings revealed that the expansion of residential areas and rural roads have increasingly heightened the rates of forest loss before 2000. However, the spatial patterns of forest dynamics were changed from forest loss to forest fragmentation and forest degradation– along with the expansion of forest and mine roads– since the 1980s. Although the topographic and hydrologic features were the top influential predictors that control the susceptibility of protected forests to landslides, the natural and anthropogenic triggers have obtained significant values in non-protected forests to the landslides as well; forest fragmentation and logging were the top features of anthropogenic triggers. This research verifies that influential variables are different either for detecting landslides or for assessing landslide susceptibility in different forest regions. The spatial-based regression models showed higher efficiency than the traditional regression model for modelling relationships between forest changes and anthropogenic- induced drivers; however, there was no priority between spatial models. Random forest algorithm demonstrated satisfactory accuracy for mapping of both old and new landslides and landslide susceptibility with higher accuracy in the protected forests. This research has investigated human-induced forest changes; however, other abiotic and biotic agents may cause these changes such as climate hazards, forest fires, insect outbreaks, pathogens, and other natural hazards that need to be explored in the future studies.

With sufficient time, a high density polyethylene geomembrane will degrade and lose its engineering properties until ruptures signal the end of its service-life. This thesis examines the longevity of nine different geomembranes; five of them were of different thickness manufactured from the same resin. The degradation of properties and time to failure are investigated for geomembranes: in immersion tests; as a part of a landfill composite liner; and, exposed to the elements. The different thermal and stress histories associated with manufacturing geomembranes of different thickness are shown to affect their morphological structure; consequently, their stress crack resistance. When immersed in synthetic leachate, it was found that: (a) thicker geomembranes have a longer antioxidants depletion time but the effect of thickness decreases with temperature and is less than expected; (b) inferences of geomembrane’s longevity based on its initial properties may be misleading because a geomembrane may chemically degrade (as manifested by the change in melt index) despite the presence of a significant amount of stabilizers (as manifested by the measured high pressure oxidative induction time); and, (c) stress crack resistance may change before antioxidant depletion or chemical degradation takes place, likely, due to changes in geomembrane morphological structure with the maximum decrease being observed at 55oC. Reductions also were measured for geomembrane immersed in air and water at 55oC. The geomembrane aged in a simulated landfill liner at 85oC is shown to have service-life as little as three years with 30,000 to >2.0 million ruptures/hectare at failure. For exposed geomembranes in Alumbrera (Argentina), samples were exhumed from two mine facilities after ~16 years of exposure. The antioxidants in exposed samples depleted to residual and the stress crack resistance had dropped to as low as 70 hours. Samples were exhumed from a different exposed geomembrane in a test site in Godfrey (Canada) after six years of exposure. The antioxidants were partially depleted, with depletion to residual projected to take at least 20 years; however, despite no evidence of chemical ageing, the stress crack resistance had decreased from 330 to 190 hours, likely due to changes in the morphological structure of the geomembrane.

Resumo:
Climate-triggered forest disturbances are increasing either by drought or by other climate extremes. Droughts can change the structure and function of forests in long-term or cause large-scale disturbances such as tree mortality, forest fires and insect outbreaks in short-term. Traditional approaches such as dendroclimatological surveys could retrieve the long-term responses of forest trees to drought conditions; however, they are restricted to individual trees or local forest stands. Therefore, multitemporal satellite-based approaches are progressing for holistic assessment of climate-induced forest responses from regional to global scales. However, little information exists on the efficiency of satellite data for analyzing the effects of droughts in different forest biomes and further studies on the analysis of approaches and large-scale disturbances of droughts are required. This research was accomplished for assessing satellite-derived physiological responses of the Caspian Hyrcanian broadleaves forests to climate-triggered droughts from regional to large scales in northeast Iran. The 16-day physiological anomalies of rangelands and forests were analysed using MODIS-derived indices concerning water content deficit and greenness loss, and their variations were spatially assessed with monthly and inter-seasonal precipitation anomalies from 2000 to 2016. Specifically, dimensions of forest droughts were evaluated in relations with the dimensions of meteorological and hydrological droughts. Large-scale effects of droughts were explored in terms of tree mortality, insect outbreaks, and forest fires using field observations, multitemporal Landsat and TerraClimate data. Various approaches were evaluated to explore forest responses to climate hazards such as traditional regression models, spatial autocorrelations, spatial regression models, and panel data models. Key findings revealed that rangelands’ anomalies did show positive responses to monthly and inter-seasonal precipitation anomalies. However, forests’ droughts were highly associated with increases in temperatures and evapotranspiration and were slightly associated with the decreases in precipitation and surface water level. The hazard intensity of droughts has affected the water content of forests higher than their greenness properties. The stages of moderate to extreme dieback of trees were significantly associated with the hazard intensity of the deficit of forests’ water content. However, the stage of severe defoliation was only associated with the hazard intensity of forests’ greenness loss. Climate hazards significantly triggered insect outbreaks and forest fires. Although maximum temperatures, precipitation deficit, availability of soil moisture and forest fires of the previous year could significantly trigger insect outbreaks, the maximum temperatures were the only significant triggers of forest fires from 2010‒2017. In addition to climate factors, environmental and anthropogenic factors could control fire severity during a dry season. The overall evaluation indicated the evidence of spatial associations between satellite-derived forest disturbances and climate hazards. Future studies are required to apply the approaches that could handle big-data, use the satellite data that have finer wavelengths for large-scale mapping of forest disturbances, and discriminate climate-induced forest disturbances from those that induced by other biotic and abiotic agents.

Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs, F(CF2)nCH2CH2OH) are emerging contaminants in the environment. Biodegradation of 6:2 and 8:2 FTOHs has been intensively studied using soils and activated sludge. However, little is known about the bacteria responsible for biotransformation of FTOHs. This study deciphered factors affecting biodefluorination of FTOHs and their metabolites, and developed three effective FTOH-degrading consortia. Two alkane-degrading Pseudomonas strains (P. oleovorans and P. butanovora) can defluorinate 4:2, 6:2 and 8:2 FTOHs, with a higher degree of defluorination for 4:2 FTOH. According to the identified metabolites, P. oleovorans transformed FTOHs via two pathways I and II. Pathway I led to formation of x:2 ketone (x = n-1), x:2 sFTOH and perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs). Pathway II resulted in the formation of x:3 polyfluorinated acid and relatively minor shorter-chain PFCAs. Conversely, P. butanovora transformed FTOHs by pathway I only. Mycobacterium vaccae JOB5 (a C1-C22alkane-degrading bacterium) and P. fluorescens DSM 8341 (a fluoroacetate-degrading bacterium) can transform 6:2 FTOH via both pathways I and II with the formation of odd-numbered short-chain PFCAs. In the presence of dicyclopropylketone or formate, P. oleovorans transformed 6:2 FTOH six times faster and produced odd-numbered PFCAs. P. butanovora, utilized both pathways I and II in the presence of lactate, and it also produced odd-numbered PFCAs. Unlike P. oleovorans, P. fluorescens DSM 8341 could slightly convert 5:3 polyfluorinated acid (a key metabolite during 6:2 FTOH degradation, [F(CF2)5CH2CH2COOH]) to 4:3 acid and PFPeA via one-carbon removal pathways. Three FTOH-degrading consortia transformed FTOHs, with enhanced removal of FTOHs in the presence of n-octane. A higher copy number of alkB gene was found to correspond to better removal of FTOHs, suggesting that alkane-degrading bacteria might be the key degraders in the enrichments. The three enrichment cultures showed a similar microbial community structure. This is the first study reporting that pure strains of alkane- and fluoroacetate-degrading bacteria can bio-transform FTOHs via different or preferred transformation pathways to remove multiple –CF2– groups from FTOHs to form shorter-chain PFCAs, and to other perfluorinated acids. The results of this study also suggest that enhanced FTOH biodegradation is possible through co-substrate addition and/or using enrichment cultures.

Soil erosion, which is a critical component of land degradation, is one of the serious global environmental problems often threatening food security, water resources, and biodiversity. A comprehensive assessment and analysis of remote sensing applications in the spatial soil erosion mapping and monitoring over time and space is therefore, important for providing effective management and rehabilitation approaches at local, national and regional scales. The overall aim of the study was to assess the use of multispectral remote sensing sensors in mapping and monitoring the spatio-temporal variations in levels of soil erosion in the former homelands of Sekhukhune district, South Africa. Firstly, the effectiveness of the new and freely available moderate-resolution multispectral remote sensing data (Landsat 8 Operation Land Imager: OLI and Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Instrument: MSI) derived spectral bands, vegetation indices, and a combination of spectral bands and vegetation indices in mapping the spatio-temporal variation of soil erosion in the former homelands of Sekhukhune District, South Africa is compared. The study further determines the most optimal individual sensor variables that can accurately map soil erosion. The results showed that the integration of spectral bands and spectral vegetation indices yielded high soil erosion overall classification accuracies for both sensors. Sentinel-2 data produced an OA of 83, 81% whereas Landsat 8 has an OA of 82.86%. The study further established that Sentinel-2 MSI bands located in the NIR (0.785-0.900 μm), red edge (0.698-0.785μm) and SWIR (1.565-2.280 μm) regions were the most optimal for discriminating degraded soils from other land cover types. For Landsat 8 OLI, only the SWIR (1.560-2.300 μm), NIR (0.845-0.885 μm) region were selected as the best regions. Of the eighteen spectral vegetation indices computed, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) and Global Environmental Monitoring Index (GEMI) were selected as the most suitable for detecting and mapping soil erosion. Secondly, the study assessed soil erosion in the former homelands of Sekhukhune, South Africa by applying a time-series analysis (2002 and 2017), to track changes of areas affected by varying degrees of erosion. Specifically, the study assessed and mapped changes of eroded areas (wet and dry season), using multi-date Landsat products 8 OLI and 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+)). Additionally, the study used extracted eroded areas and overlay analysis was performed together with geology, slope and the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) of the area under study to assess whether and to what extent the observed erosional trends can be explained. ii Time series analysis indicated that the dry season of 2002, experienced 16.61 % (224733 ha) of erosion whereas in 2017 19.71% was observed. A similar trend was also observed in the wet season. This work also indicates that the dominant geology type Lebowa granite: and Rustenburg layered its lithology strata experienced more erosional disturbances than other geological types. Slopes between 2-5% (Nearly level) experienced more erosion and vice-versa. On the hand, the relationship between TWI and eroded areas showed that much erosion occurred between 3 and 6 TWI values in all the seasons for the two different years, however, the dry season of 2002 had a slightly higher relationship and vice-versa. We, therefore, recommend use and integration of freely and readily available new and free generation broadband sensors, such as Landsat data and environmental variables if soil erosion has to be well documented for purposes of effective soil rehabilitation and conservation.
Consequently, maintenance actions can be scheduled more efficiently which spares resources and reduces costs.
