We make meaning of disease, suffering, and death through narrative, by telling a story. In a therapeutic narrative approach, this article explores the influence of shamanic intervention in psycho-oncology. This qualitative study seeks to present the narrative effects of detailed shamanic sessions (the use of the drum and telling and interpreting visions according to the shamanic mythology) in the context of psycho-oncological treatment. In particular, the narrative positions of a patient (Mrs. AA) are described (using a software linguistic analysis, T-LAB) as they occurred before and after shamanistic sessions. The authors suggested that the shamanism sessions enabled Mrs. AA to produce a larger and more singular narrative about her end-of-life experience: from the initial narrative position of feeling “the acute consciousness of finiteness” to an emergent narrative position based on “consciousness of an interdependence/interconnection in all human and spiritual relationships.”

Background: In the mammalian system, the hair follicle is known to be the most significant organ that determines appearance, gender distinction, provides intense temperature protection, and plays a role in self-defense. The younger generations have begun to suffer from extreme hair loss problems due to many lifestyle-related changes such as fatigue, anxiety, intake of junk foods, use of different hairstyling/coloring methods, etc. The loss of hair is not temporary in most cases, but it results in alopecia. Many people suffering from hair loss are in search of multiple treatments due to extreme anxiety and tension, from mythology to traditional and therapeutic healing to the use of minoxidil and finasteride. To improve hair growth and to prevent hair loss, hair root activation is required. Objective: The present study was intended to use different herbs to formulate herbal hair serum for general purposes (hair application). Methods: Crude herbs are obtained from nearby regions. In order to obtain the extract, the required part of herbs, such as Citrus sinensis peel, Zingiber officinale roots, and Linum usitatissimum seeds, Nigella sativa, and Trigonella foenum-graecum were specifically weighed and dispensed in water, boiled, allowed to cool, and then filtered. To the filtrate, castor oil and vitamin E were added. The formulated herbal hair serum was tested, and different criteria were determined and recorded in this text, such as physical appearance, viscosity, pH, homogeneity, eye sensitivity (Draize eye test), hair growth activity, hair weight, stability test, etc. Results: Prepared herbal hair serum was found to be pale brown in color with pseudoplastic behavior. The texture of the formulation was smooth and lubricative, and the pH was within the acceptable limit. Herbal hair serum revealed good hair growth as well as hair weight after application with minor sensitivity for the first time. The formulation was found to be stable for seven days. Conclusion: Herbal cosmetics are still commonly used by average citizens because of fewer side effects and greater protection and safety profile. Current research has revealed that herbal formulations are effective in enhancing hair consistency.

The attitudes of educated Christians to the pagan literary culture of Late Antiquity have long attracted scholarly debate. Jerome and Augustine express the unease that many Christian men of letters felt, and Christian apologists repeatedly attacked the absurdity and immorality of pagan mythology. Yet both Jerome and Augustine nevertheless believed that classical culture could contribute to the Christian life, and mythology remained a source of inspiration for certain Christian authors. This is demonstrated vividly by the writings of two important late antique figures, Sidonius Apollinaris in 5th c. Gaul and the 6th c. African poet Corippus. In their works we can trace an evolving acceptance of classical mythology as a cultural rather than religious inheritance, moving towards the later Christian Humanism of the Renaissance.

Decades of overly exuberant antioxidant vitamin claims, regarding disease prevention and antiaging, have not been supported by rigorous scientific testing and negative studies have been largely denied or ignored by the dietary supplement industry. Myths, half truths, and outright lies are commonly used to promote their sales since there is minimal governmental oversight of their effectiveness or of their harmful potential. The free radical theory, which served as the basis of antioxidant vitamin studies to prevent disease, lacks predictability, fails to meet the requirements of the scientific method, and has consequently been invalidated. Antioxidant vitamins have such widespread use that their potential to do harm has become a global public health issue. We must follow the fundamental medical precept of Hippocrates: ‘‘First, do no harm.’’ We must separate fact from factitious and ‘‘myths of marketing’’ from scientific truths.

Grundtvig and the Myths - A Reply to Fl. Lundgreen-NielsenBy Jens Peter ÆgidiusJens Peter Ægidius criticizes Fl. Lundgreen-Nielsen’s interpretation of Grundtvig’s use of the Nordic mythology as imagery, published in Grundtvig Studies 1994. Here Lund-Nielsen proposed the view that Grundtvig’s use of this imagery must be considered a failure. Referring among other things to the use of mythology in the Danish folk high school, Ægidius points out that Lundgreen-Nielsen’s opinion should not remain unchallenged.

Comparative religion is a field of study through which views of various religions about a particular topic or sets of topics can be collated, interpreted, and systematically compared for attaining useful insights and broadening the understanding of religious beliefs, behaviors, and actions [i]. The current research furthers the study of comparative religion by elaborating the conceptions or myths related to eclipses as found in various religions and cultures in the world. Written as a narrative literature review, it aims to collate these conceptions and opinions for comparative analysis. In this paper, we have studied the ‘myths’ and ‘mythology’ of the religions and cultures spread across Australia, Asia, the Americas, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It is found that some common themes exist in the beliefs held by various people and religions. However, if we compare these themes with each other, they are found to be considerably different indicating that they have not come from a common source; people have been creating them at various points in history. However, very different to them is the Islamic perspective on the topic. It profoundly differs from the conceptions held in other religions. It does not say that the eclipses are caused by some giant creature eating up the sun, or because of the sun being imprisoned, or because of a fight between some ‘gods’, and so on. It rather explains them as a phenomenon of nature that invites reflection and pondering. This raises a very important question to ponder upon: Why did Islam not adopt any myths to explain the concept of eclipse unlike any other religion even though it could use them for its benefit? This paper answers it by explaining the nature and objective of the Prophet of Islam and the source of his knowledge which was that very Creator who created the sun and the moon and everything else. Another important point that the current research highlights is that there is an inseparable connection between the fields of history, science, religion, politics, culture, and psychology; none of them can be separated from each other if one wishes to obtain a holistic understanding of this topic as well as many other matters of the past, present, and future.

The article is devoted to the problem of reproduction of the archetypes of the collective unconscious in modern social mythology. The question of primordial images in recent years has been the focus of research attention of many social sciences: anthropology, psychology, philosophy. The article presents the prerequisites for the development of social mythology and a brief overview of its research. In the course of the analysis of archetypal images, four major areas of research in modern social mythology are characterized: structuralist, semiotic, phenomenological and psychoanalytic. Mythological images used in various spheres of life are presented as the subject of research: in mass culture, mass media, art, education, etc. 6 archetypes are characterized: Infant, Virgin, Mother, Rebirth, Spirit, Trickster. Their features and specifics are shown. Examples of the use of archetypes in archaic myths of different peoples and in modern socio-mythological creativity are given as illustrations, which demonstrates the viability of archetypal images. The transformation of the images of the characters of archaic myths in popular culture is demonstrated. The article defines the common features of modern social mythology and archaic myths. It is concluded that archetypal images of social mythology play an important role in social life: through modern social myths, society adapts to the changing conditions of its life; archetypal images of modern social mythology perform the function of maintaining a pattern, reproducing the value-normative system of society.

This is a narrative of the Sugarman Project, a community project in Central Australia concerned with research into ancient Mediterranean and Greek traditions of alcohol use and abuse. The project was initiated as a response to a request from an Aboriginal man for a ‘story about alcohol’ which would fill a missing link in traditional Aboriginal conceptualisation of alcohol. The ‘story’ would have a role in indigenous treatment of alcohol abuse, put in a symbolic form consistent with oral teaching methods of indigenous custom. The project is centred around the development of an original performance script. The thesis describes the origin, context, development, rationale and implications of the project, especially with a view to considering the potential of the mythologem of Dionysos as a therapeutic paradigm in intercultural substance abuse work. Particular attention is given to the relationship between Aboriginal and European therapeutic practitioners and the use of myth, metaphor, symbolic function and specific Aboriginal ‘dreaming stories’ as a source and backup to therapeutic practice. Principal themes include the role of mythopoetic symbol formation in the development of thinking; reflections on the presence of theriomorphic serpentine imagery in the work; the role of stories as mental containers of therapeutic theory; reflections on the ‘milieu’ needed for implementing intercultural therapeutic procedures; examples of positive indigenous responses to alcohol work; preliminary notions on cross cultural transference communications; and reflections on primal states associated with alcohol intoxication. The conclusion is that the experience of developing a Western myth in concert with Aboriginal colleagues confirms the value of the initial, seminal suggestion that ‘dreaming stories’ have an authentic place in the repertoire of alcohol treatment and education

A number of experimental studies have implied a link between diabetes-induced lipid accumulation in the myocardium and the development of cardiomyopathy. Since diabetics excrete large amounts of myo-inositol which is a lipotropic agent, this study was undertaken to investigate the effects of myo-inositol on the elevated myocardial lipid levels and the depressed cardiac performance of diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in female Wistar rats (190-215 g) with streptozotocin (STZ) (55 mg/kg, i.v.). Three days after diabetes induction, myo-inositol was administered in the drinking water (2.5 g/kg/day) for a 8 week period. Untreated diabetics exhibited a loss of body weight, hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia and hypothyroidism. These effects were not altered after myo-inositol treatment. STZ-diabetes also produced a significant elevation of plasma and myocardial triacylglycerol, cholesterol and phospholipid. Myo-inositol treatment decreased these lipid levels. In addition, hearts from diabetic animals had a decreased ability to develop left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP) and both the rate of pressure rise (+dP/dt) and the rate of pressure decline (-dP/dt) were also reduced. Hearts from myo-inositol-treated diabetic animals showed a partial but definite improvement of cardiac function. As diabetes-induced hypothyroidism was not altered after myo-inositol supplementation, a combination treatment of both myo-inositol (2.5 g/kg/day, p.o. daily) and T₃ (30 ug/kg/day, s.c. daily) was then undertaken to determine whether heart function of diabetic rats could be further improved. STZ-diabetic rats were characterized by a loss of body weight, hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia; none of which were altered by either T₃ or myo-inositol plusT₃ treatment. T₃ treatment normalized the thyroid state of diabetic animals as shown by Tahiliani and McNeill (1984). However, plasma and myocardial triacylglycerol, cholesterol and phospholipid levels of diabetic rats either remained elevated or were further increased with T₃ or myo-inositol plus T₃ treatment. In addition, T₃ treatment alone did not prevent cardiac dysfunction in diabetic rats. There was, however, some improvement in heart function in the groups treated with both myo-inositol and T₃, but the improvement was not as pronounced as with myo-inositol treatment alone.

Background: This research was designed to explore the experience and understanding of counsellors' and psychotherapists' engagement with metaphors in the therapeutic process. The aim is to reflect on the experience of therapists involved in therapeutic metaphors from differing perspectives. Methodology: In a heuristic study a group of seven therapists (counsellors and psychotherapists) shared their use of metaphors in their therapy practice. Data were collected through an informal conversational interview that supported the participants to share their experiences in a natural dialogue. Findings: The experience of using metaphor in therapy appears to involve a multi-faceted web of generation, construction and development between the therapist and client. Various levels of depth of metaphor in therapy were identified along with links to transferential and cultural issues. Metaphors of hope also appear to be potentially important. Discussion: The findings suggest that the use of metaphors in therapy is pervasive. Metaphors that reflect an empathic connection and encounter between therapist and client were identified. Dualistic thinking around the origination of metaphors in therapy is challenged and the concept of co-creation and the mutual development of moving metaphors is discussed. Environmental and cultural influences are considered alongside transferential aspects. Conclusion: It appears that the use of metaphor in therapy is pervasive and offers an opportunity for therapeutic change. The consideration of the construction of metaphors and their mutual development may be useful for therapists to consider. This research highlights the need for more investigation with regard to client perspectives, the environmental impacts on metaphors in therapy and who the therapist and client stand for metaphorically for each other.

Dissertation (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis provides the first scientific evidence on the cancer modulating properties of two unique South African herbal teas, rooibos (Aspalathus Iinearis) and honeybush (Cyclopia intermedia) utilizing in vitro as well as in vivo carcinogenesis assays by: • Demonstrating the in vitro antimutagenic activity of aqueous extracts of the herbal teas against the metabolic activated mutagens, 2-acetylaminofluorene (2- AAF) and the mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1 (AFB,) as well as, to a certain extent, against the direct acting mutagen, hydrogen peroxide, utilizing the Salmonella typhimurium mutagenicity assay. • Increasing the activity of hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes, glutathione Stransferase alpha and UPD-glucuronosyl transferase, and reduced the oxidative stress by stabilizing the level of reduced glutathione (GSH) resulting in an increased hepatic reduced to oxidized glutathione ratio (GSG:GSSG). No toxic effects were noticed in rats consuming the herbal teas for 10 weeks as their sole source of drinking fluid. • Demonstrating the ex vivo modulation of 2-AAF- and AFB1-induced mutagenesis by sub- cellular hepatic fractions of rats consuming the herbal teas in the Salmonella mutagenicity assay. Hepatic cytosolic fractions protected against mutagenesis of both mutagens, while the microsomal fractions exhibited a reduced capacity to metabolize AFB1 to its active mutagenic metabolite. • Providing evidence for the in vivo modulation of tumour promotion using the liver as well as the two-stage skin carcinogenesis animal models. The unprocessed herbal teas arrested proliferation of the placental form of glutathione-Stransferase (GSTP+) altered cells as well as reduced the total number of enzyme altered foci in the liver of rats. Topical application of polyphenolic fractions of the various herbal teas prior to 12-0-tetra-decanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) tumour promotion, reduced tumour formation in mouse skin initiated with 7,12-dimethylbenz[ ajanthracene (DMBA). The protective effect was illustrated by a decreased tumour incidence, a reduction in tumour volume as well as a delayed onset of tumour development. The f1avanol/proanthocyanidin content of the fractions could playa major role in the protection against skin tumour promotion. • Proposing possible mechanisms whereby rooibos and honeybush herbal teas could exert their cancer modulating properties with respect to in vitro and ex vivo antimutagenicity, in vivo oxidative status and reduced tumour promotion. • Providing evidence that the herbal teas mimic the cancer modulating properties of green and black teas although differences exist, presumably due to differences in the polyphenolic constituents. • Suggesting that rooibos and honeybush herbal teas may play an important role as chemopreventive agents in the modulation of cancer.

The core premise in this thesis is that each generation rediscovers and reinterprets mythology from its own perspective; and that individual authors within each generation make intertextual use of mythology accordingly. With this premise in mind I will examine the intertextual use, interpretation, and revision of Norse mythology, particularly the material from Snorri's Edda and the Poetic Edda, in Scandinavian literature of the 1980s and early 1990s. Through an analysis of the use of mythology by individual authors, I aim to examine the appeal of myth generally, both to authors and readers, and will discuss how the presence of mythological material in literature can reinforce the underlying ideology in the work as a whole, and may also influence the reader's receptiveness to the work. Alongside this, the works will be analysed individually in their social and literary context. The thesis will be divided into three sections. The first section will introduce the earliest literary accounts of Norse mythology, and the cosmology they depict. The re-use of the mythology in literature generally will be discussed, and the tradition of literary re-use of Norse mythology will be presented. The second section will form the main body of the thesis. The first chapter will provide a brief survey of the works to be covered. These are taken from across Scandinavia - primarily from Denmark and Norway. In all the works, which range from post-modern poetry to picture books for children, the use of Norse mythology is a central element. The works will then be analysed in individual chapters. The first four of these (2-5) examine the use of myth in novels: Ragnarok [The Downfall of the Gods] (1982) by Danish author Villy Sørensen; Kärleksguen Frö [The Love God Freyr] (1988) by Swedish writer Torgny Lindgren; Gunnlaðar saga [The Story about Gunnlod] (1987) by Icelandic writer Svava Jakobsdóttir; and Norwegian Vera Henriksen's Ravn og Due [Raven and Dove] (1991). These will be analysed in turn showing how they utilise similar material with a variety of results.

Resumo:
Introduction: Cannabis sativa has several therapeutic properties and has been used for millennials for healing purposes. Among its benefits are analgesic, antiemetic and tranquilizing effects, acting strongly on the nervous system. Objective: This study aims to emphasize the importance of Cannabidiol as a therapeutic purpose for epilepsy, especially in Brazil, where its use is still controlled. Method: A systematic literature review, using bibliographic searches carried out in the electronic databases LILACS, PubMed and SciELO with the descriptors “cannabidiol” and “epilepsy”. Of 1645 searches found, 06 were used in the study. Results: Epileptic seizures can be generalized or partial and are determined by the affected area. The treatment for epilepsy are drugs that decrease the arousal capacity of neural tissue and a significant percentage of individuals cannot control them with traditional drugs alone. Endocannabinoids work in response to epileptiform activity, to activate CB1 receptors for excitatory neurons, to contain excess neuronal activity, which occurs during seizures. It is proven that patients who use it do not have toxic adverse effects. Conclusions: In Brazil, Cannabis is a controlled drug and the fact that it is imported, interfere in the treatment, who is interrupted while patient waits the new dosage. The importance of cannabidiol as a target for research and studies is verified, as it has ample potential in the treatment of epilepsy and reduces brain damage caused by it. In order that patients with epilepsy, have improvements in their quality of life.
