Urban renewal issues in France are very often discussed with reference to the demolition or renovation of large-scale housing estates. But these issues also concern former industrial areas which have their own distinct architectural, social, and economic difficulties. This article aims to present analysis of these differences using the example of two case studies in the Lyon metropolitan area, the second largest agglomeration in France. First, we outline the background of urban policy in France and Lyon in particular, together with mapping “priority geography” of urban policy in Lyon. Our two case studies, La Saulaie and Carré de Soie, are located in suburbs of the metropolis. Through our analysis of the social and spatial features of these two renewal projects which are currently under way, we demonstrate that urban renewal policies in France are multi-layered, and that the case of Lyon illustrates especially robust engagement on the part of local authorities. Tackling poverty and isolation are the priorities in La Saulaie. In Carré de Soie, the challenges are to create a public transportation hub, a new housing market, and to attract companies to this new secondary centre. We also show that urban renewal operations are not limited to the areas defined by the “priority geography”.

At the last stage of the Italian Wars (1494—1559), the military, political and, most importantly, financial superiority of the Habsburgs over the Valois became quite obvious. The Spanish king could make use of silver which was already coming quite regularly and in large quantities from the mines of the New World. He controlled the old (Augsburg — Ulm) and new (Besançon — Piacenza) centres of banking capital, as well as the commercial and financial heart of the emerging world economic system — Antwerp. But King Henry II of France (1547—1559) launched a series of daring reforms, sometimes far ahead of his time. The king could rely on a more developed bureaucracy than in other countries, on a state system that had reached an advanced level of centralization, and on the economy that was still on the rise, the ‘heart’ of which were the Lyon fairs that acquired international significance. In order to continue an active foreign policy, an unprecedented step was taken — not a royal official, but a Lyon banker of Italian origin, Albizzi Del Bene (Albisse Delbeyne), was appointed to the post of surintendent des finances. Thus, the government was able to use the experience and capability of the banking world for its own purposes. Under the conditions of the war, which was fought at a great distance from the borders of the kingdom, the circulation of money was greatly simplified and became more predictable. The surintendent, closely associated with the most powerful trading and banking house Gadagni (Gadagne) of Lyon, had great weight among Italian bankers who operated not only in Lyon, but also in Venice, Rome, and Tuscany. The reformers’ plans and the progress of reform can be fully appreciated by studying documents from the Lamoignon Collection (Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts, Moscow). Providing fairly clear guarantees based on the income from the Lyon fairs, the king, with the help of his surintendent and people from his entourage who were responsible for financing French policy in Italy (Constable Anne de Montmorency, royal secretary Jean Duthier), managed to attract huge sums (about 12 million Tours livres) which made it possible to resist a powerful enemy. A flexible combination of bills of exchange, clearing and other mechanisms allowed to transfer this amount of money to Italy. The crowning success of Del Bene was the creation of the Grand Parti de Lyon — a consortium of creditors to the French king. Some researchers claimed that its principles were quite comparable to the achievements of the 19th-century banking system. If there had been peace, the Grand Parti de Lyon could well have contributed to the repayment of the principal amount of borrowings and the dissolution of the accumulated interest debt. But politics had once again interfered with the economy. A new war, in which France was drawn against the will of the royal entourage, a chain of military defeats (the capture of Montmorency, the main patron of Del Bene, in 1557) and, finally, the unexpected death of Henry II shortly after the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559) put an end to bold economic reforms.

Within this framework, four university libraries are working towards their merger. Both the larger project and the libraries are facing critical key points and strong opposition in the very near future that could threaten their very existence.

Entre 1806 et 1864, le régime du privilège imposé par Napoléon Ier servit de cadre à la vie théâtrale lyonnaise. Sa mise en place se traduisit par la réunion du Grand-Théâtre et du Théâtre des Célestins sous une direction unique engagée et surveillée par les autorités locales. . En trois actes, cette recherche a pour but de comprendre le poids du privilège théâtral lyonnais, de saisir les rythmes de la vie théâtrale et d’entrevoir la sociabilité des spectateurs des deux théâtres. Tout au long de la période du privilège, les autorités locales tentèrent de faire appliquer le régime du privilège, imposé par l’Etat, à vingt-neuf directions instables qui s’achevaient fréquemment par une faillite. Néanmoins, la première mission des entrepreneurs de spectacles, désormais employés de la municipalité, étaient de veiller à ce que, chaque soir, les théâtres ouvrent leurs portes, afin que les comédiens interprètent les pièces du répertoire devant une salle éparse et hétérogène. Les détenteurs de billets estimaient posséder un droit de regard sur l’engagement des artistes. Les semaines suivant l’ouverture de l’année, le public usait et abusait de ce « droit » sous la surveillance étroite de la police des spectacles. Toutes ces composantes, autorités, directions et spectateurs, participaient à la vie théâtrale lyonnaise de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Comme dans beaucoup de villes de province, l’histoire de la vie théâtrale lyonnaise a été négligée. Mais la capitale des Gaules en possédait bien une, qui mérite, autant que les autres, de retrouver sa place dans l’histoire culturelle nationale
Between 1806 and 1864, the preferential regime for theatre set up by Napoleon I created a framework for theatrical life in Lyons. Its implementation saw the Grand-Théâtre and the Théâtre des Célestins come together under one management, run and supervised by the local authorities. In three acts, this research aims to understand the impact of the preferential regime in Lyons, to appreciate the rhythm of theatrical life and the social exchange between the spectators of the two theatres. Throughout the period of preferential treatment, the local authorities tried to apply the rules of the « preferential regime”, imposed by the State, to 29 unstable theatrical companies which often ended in bankruptcy. Nonetheless, the main goal of theatrical entrepreneurs, now employed by the local authorities, was to make sure that every evening the theatres were open, and that the actors could perform the plays in the repertoire in front of an often scant and mixed audience. The ticket holders felt they had a right of opinion concerning the commitment of the actors. The weeks following the annual opening, the public used and abused this « right » under the strict surveillance of the theatrical police. All these groups, authorities, theatre managers, and spectators made up the theatrical life in Lyons during the first half of the 19th century. As in many provincial towns, the history of Lyons theatre life has been neglected. However, the Capital of Gaul had indeed a theatrical life, which deserves its place, as much as any other, in the cultural history of the nation

Le theatre pour enfants a toujours ete tres actif dans la region lyonnaise de lyon a saint-etienne. Les actions de recherches et de formation ont existe de 1964 a 1993. La mission academique d'action culturelle a debute une action de recherche en 1964, avec le concours de maurice yendt, directeur du t. J. A. Et de gilles chavassieux, responsable du groupe 64, devenu depuis le directeur du theatre des ateliers. En premiere partie de la these, les compagnies theatrales pour enfants, nombreuses a cette epoque en region lyonnaise, sont citees et l'action de la maac examinee jusqu'en 1987. La seconde partie de l'ouvrage est consacree au t. J. A. Et aux rencontres internationales de theatre jeune public qui fonctionnent a lyon depuis 1977. En troisieme partie, le gretej a l'universite lyon ii a fonctionne jusqu'en 1993. Il reunissait des enseignants et des praticiens de theatre, en partenariat, en recherches appliquees et formation des enseignants. Que demeure-t-il actuellement de ces actions de recherches et de formation ? conclusion : ce sont des theatres comme le theatre municipal des celestins qui reprennent le flambeau des rencontres sur le plan local
Theatre for young in people was always very active in lyon and saint-etienne. Research and training for teachers were begining in 1964, with maurice yendt, director of theatre des jeunes annees, and gilles chavassieux, responsible of groupe 64, became new director of theatre des ateliers. In first part of this thesis, the companies of theatre for childen, in great number, in the epoch, in lyon, arc mentionned and maac action examinated until 1987. The second part of the thesis concerns t. J. A. And "rencontres internationales de theatre pour jeune public" which began in lyon in 1977 year. In third part, gretej in university of lyon ii has worhed until 1993. Teachers and actors were working together for research and training. C’est le 8 mars 1929 qu’on voit pour la première fois à Lyon, dans une salle de cinéma, une production américaine sonore, Les Ailes (Wings, William A. Wellman, 1927). Ce film marque les débuts du cinéma sonore et parlant dans la capitale des Gaules. Dès lors, les grands établissements de la ville s’équipent d’une installation. C’est un succès phénoménal. L’arrivée et le triomphe du cinéma parlant inquiètent le monde théâtral qui voit en lui un sérieux et redoutable concurrent. À cette époque, de nombreux articles rapprochant le septième art et l’art dramatique vont paraître, nombre d’entre eux s’interrogent alors sur l’avenir du théâtre. Mais qu’en est-il réellement des répercussions de la généralisation du parlant sur l’évolution de la fréquentation des théâtres de la ville de Lyon ? Comment réagissent-ils face à l’arrivée des films parlants ? Cette nouvelle technologie a-t-elle eu des conséquences sur leur fréquentation et sur leur fonctionnement ? Dans une approche socio-culturelle, économique et historique, cette thèse se propose donc d’étudier et d’analyser l’évolution de la fréquentation des cinémas et des théâtres lyonnais au cours des années trente. L’étude de l’impact de la généralisation du parlant, puis de la crise économique et enfin de la mise en place des nouvelles lois sociales par le Front populaire en juin 1936 est alors déterminante pour comprendre les changements de rapports qui s’établissent entre ces deux arts
The first time that an American sound film was shown in a cinema in Lyon, was on March 8, 1929. The movie was entitled Wings (Les Ailes, William A. Wellman, 1927). This film was a starting point for sound films also known as talking pictures, in the capital of the Gauls. From that point, cinemas started to equip. It was a phenomenal success. The beginnings and the triumph of sound films worried the theatre world, which saw them as a serious and fierce rival. This is the time when a lot of articles comparing cinematographic art and drama were published, many of them wondering about the future of drama. What were the repercussions of the transition to sound films on the evolution of theatres attendance in Lyon? How did theatres react to the rise of talking pictures? Did this new technology have an impact on theatres attendance and functioning? This thesis will pay attention to the evolution of attendance in Lyon’s cinemas and theatres in the 1930s focusing on a sociocultural, economic and historic approach. The study of the impact of the transition to sound films as well as the economic crisis and the implementation of laws by the Front populaire in June 1936 are then determining to understand the evolution of the connection between drama and cinema

L'enjeu du présent travail consiste à saisir les différentes significations que peut prendre, sur la période 1989-2007, l'expression "théâtre politique", aussi omniprésente dans la pratique et dans le discours des différents acteurs du théâtre – artistes, directeurs de théâtre, programmateurs, pouvoirs publics – que polysémique. Refusant une approche normative et téléologique, fondée sur un principe de dépassement chrono-logique d'une définition par une autre, et parce qu'il nous paraissait que coexistait sur cette période une pluralité mais non une infinité de significations à l'expression "théâtre politique", nous avons adapté à la sphère théâtrale un concept emprunté au champ de la sociologie, et plus précisément aux travaux de Luc Boltanski et Laurent Thévenot : le concept de "cité". Nous avons défini chaque "cité du théâtre politique" comme un discours théâtral cohérent, le terme discours recouvrant aussi bien les spectacles que les propos publics tenus par les artistes, par les pouvoirs publics et par la critique. Dans chaque cité, ce discours se fonde sur une vision du monde – induite par une conception spécifique de l'histoire et du politique – qui détermine une légitimation du théâtre et de l'artiste au sein du champ théâtral et au sein de la société. Nous avons distingué quatre cités du théâtre politique qui nous paraissaient actives sur cette période, quoiqu'à des degrés d'existence et de reconnaissance variables : la cité du théâtre postpolitique, la cité du théâtre politique œcuménique, la cité de refondation de la communauté théâtrale et politique et la cité du théâtre de lutte politique
This work, which focuses on the 1989-2007 period, aims at clarifying the various meanings of "political theatre", a highly polysemic notion, which has been used at every turn, both in the practice and in the discourse of the various players on the theatrical stage : artists, theatre managers, programme planners, state and local authorities. Rejecting a normative, teleological approach based on the assumption that in the course of time one definition will invariably be succeeded and superseded by a better one, we started instead from our observation that in the past 20 years, the phrase "political theatre" has been subjected to a fairly large but by no mean unlimited number of simultaneous interpretations. This is why we adapted for the theatrical sphere a concept borrowed from the field of sociology, and more precisely from the works of Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot, the concept of "cité". We then proceeded to define each of the "cités" comprising political theatre as a coherent theatrical discourse, and by this word we mean not just the shows but also the public statements made by artists, critics and officials. This discourse is based on a certain ideology, itself stemming from a specific conception of history and policy, and results in a legitimation of the theatre and of artists, both in the theatrical field and in society at large. We have identified four different "cités" of "political theatre" which have coexisted and achieved recognition over the past two decades, though with varying degrees : the city of postpolitcal theatre, the city of oecumenical political theatre, the city of the radical reform of the theatrical and political community, and the city of political struggle theatre

L'enquête historique et archéologique fait découvrir l'existence d'une grande voie directe de Lyon à Saintes à travers le Massif Central. Cette route stratégique de pénétration, au grand gabarit et à la construction très soignée, est celle d'Agrippa; elle a été achevée dès le règne d'Auguste. Création romaine indépendante des chemins antérieurs, elle révèle les méthodes des ingénieurs antiques. Elle a conditionné la fondation de quatre capitales de peuples, ainsi que le développement du réseau ultérieur et des implantations humaines (bourgs routiers, villas); elle est restée un axe essentiel jusqu'à l'époque carolingienne
Historical and archeological investigation has led to the discovery of the existence, hitherto not known, of a direct main road from Lyons to Saintes across the Massif Central. This strategic military road, of impressive width and meticulous construction, is that of Agrippa; it was completed as long ago as the reign of Augustus. Of a roman construction completely different from that of former roads, it reveals the methods used by the engineers of ancient Rome. It allowed the founding of four capital cities as well as the development of the network of roads that followed and associated settlements (roadside towns, villae); it remained an essential highway up to Carolingian times

A l'epoque de la monarchie de juillet, les manifestations de rue etaient a la fois rares et severement reprimees, car mal distinguees de l'emeute , voire de l'insurrection. Dans les annees qui precederent la grande guerre, au contraire, elles apparaissent comme un moyen d'expression politique et sociale d'utilisation courante, parfaitement tolere par les autorites. Il a donc fallu chercher les origines de cette pratique dans d'autres formes de corteges (corteges festifs, officiels, processions religieuses, et surtout convois funeraires) toujours toleres, et dont l'importance dans la vie publique des villes francaises du dix-neuvieme siecle devrait etre reevaluee. Les liens entre l'ecole et la ville, entre les dynamiques scolaires et les dynamiques urbaines sont analyses dans cette these. Dans le cadre d'une grande ville, lyon, qui connait a l'aube du xxe siecle d'importantes mutations demographiques, economiques, sociales et urbanistiques, l'ecole primaire publique reorganisee par les lois ferry des annees 1880 doit s'affirmer. Les processus de construction et d'integration de l'ecole dans la ville sont tour a tour etudies. L'accent est mis en premier lieu sur la definition et la mise en place d'une offre d'ecole. La politique scolaire de la municipalite republicaine s'oriente vers l'amelioration des conditions d'accueil des enfants dans les ecoles : construction de locaux specifiques (groupes scolaires), multiplication du nombre de classes et de maitres, qualification des maitres, consolidation des filieres primaires (maternelle, primaire et primaire superieur). Cette politique a t-elle repondu de facon adequate aux besoins des populations, besoins qui evoluent au rythme des mutations urbaines? en d'autres termes, il s'agit de mesurer l'adaptation de l'offre d'ecole a la demande. Le second axe de recherche insiste sur le fonctionnement quotidien de l'ecole. A travers ceux qui la font vivre, c'est a dire les eleves, les familles et les instituteurs, il s'agit de comprendre comment l'ecole s'integre dans la ville. L'analyse des perimetres de recrutement des ecoles, de leur composition sociale, des parcours d'ecoliers dans la ville et dans les quartiers ainsi que les itineraires d'instituteurs permet de comprendre comment se construisent les "reputations" d'ecoles
This thesis examines connections between the transformation of schools and the surrounding urban environment from 1870 to 1914. In the context of a large city, such as lyons, which undergoes important demographic, economic, social and urban changes in the late nineteenth century, the public school, reorganized by the ferry's laws in the 1880s, must meet new challenges. This study analyzes the processes of construction and of integration of schools into particular neighborhoods within the city. The study begins by focusing on the types and provisions of schools - the supply side. The educational policies of the republican municipal government concentrated on improving the school system: for example, building specific types of schools ("groupe scholaire"), increasing the number of classrooms and teachers, enhancing teachers' skills, reinforcing early educational networks ("nursery school", "elementary school" and "ecole primaire superieure"). Did these policies meet the changing needs of their constituents ? in other words, did policies regarding schooling respond adequately to transformations in the urban environment, precede them or simply adapt as best they could ? secondly, the day-to-day activities of the school and of those who demand its services are investigated. To understand how the school is integrated in urban life, this study traces the experiences and expectations of those who give life to the institution : pupils, families and teachers. Whether in working class neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city or in more centrally-located middle-class districts, the attitudes and behaviors of families towards schools vary widely. Teachers also confront different challenges when faced with students of particular academis skills and social characteristics. An analysis of the social composition of student populations at several schools, as well as of the itineraries of teachers and students within the school system, provides for an understanding of how "reputations" are built

Resumo:

Entre métropolisation et périurbanisation, le devenir des bourgs et des petites villes pris dans la mouvance des métropoles semble posé. Submergés par la nappe périurbaine, qu'est-il advenu de leur rôle traditionnel d'encadrement du territoire conçu pour et par un monde rural ? A l'heure où fleurissent sur les marges métropolitaines de nouvelles polarités commerciales et productives, quelles fonctions assument-ils encore en matière de production et de reproduction sociale ? Quelle place, si place il y a, les dynamiques en cours leur assignent-elles dans le fonctionnement de ce que F. Ascher appelle les métapoles ? Nul doute que les réponses à ces questions puissent être très différentes d'un endroit à l'autre. Notre propos se bornera donc à présenter une de leurs évolutions possibles dans un tel contexte. Dans le cas lyonnais, nous pourrons constater que les dynamiques en cours n'induisent pas leur dépérissement. Malgré les mutations économiques et la nouvelle division spatiale du travail, ils détiennent toujours des fonctions de production. Ils conservent et renforcent aussi leur rôle en matière de reproduction sociale. La périurbanisation des ménages s'est en effet conjuguée avec un important développement de services de base aux personnes dans l'ensemble de ces centres secondaires. Ils semblent en cela troquer leur antique rôle d'encadrement du monde rural pour un autre similaire, de la societé périurbaine et plus globalement pleinement participer à la structuration et au fonctionnement quotidien de cette métapole. L'étude plus particulière d'un de ces services, les modes de garde, nous montrera enfin la pérennité du principe de proximité spatiale dans le fonctionnement urbain et ce, malgré la montée de la mobilité quotidienne. Elle nous révélera aussi l'irruption d'un nouvel acteur sur un champ très limité de la régulation urbaine : les Caisses d'allocations familiales.

L’ouvrage se propose d'apporter une contribution à la connaissance des identités sociales en milieu urbain. L’analyse se fonde sur l'examen de petites populations localisées dans l'agglomération lyonnaise: familles de la bourgeoisie locale, habitants de quartiers résidentiels du centre-ville, personnel salarie d'une banque régionale. L’examen longitudinal de ces populations permet des analyses diversifiées et complémentaires des rapports entre les appartenances familiales, les parcours professionnels et les mobilités spatiales
The work intends to contribute to the knowledge of social identities within an urban environment. The analysis is based upon the study of various small populations located within the area of Lyons families of the local upper middle class, residents in the inner city middle class neighbourhoods, staff of a regional banking house. The lengthwise scrutiny of these populations allows different and complementary approaches to the relationships between family connections, occupational careers and geographical mobilities.

Resumo:

L’article offre tout d’abord une présentation générale des hypothèses actuelles sur la datation du théâtre de Lyon et montre la nécessité d’une reprise de l’étude, qui a justement commencé par l’examen des aditus. L’aditus nord, le mieux conservé, offre un témoignage soit de l’existence d’une profonde transformation des maçonneries soit de l’intervention de deux équipes de maçons. Il présente par ailleurs des vestiges de deux à trois décors successifs, qui sont rarement conservés dans les théâtres. Des archives photographiques sur l’aditus sud apportent également des informations précieuses sur des décorations disparues et sur les restaurations modernes. Grâce aux vestiges en place, quelques pièces erratiques et des archives, l’étude fournit des renseignements sur l’histoire du théâtre antique de Lyon et sur les caractéristiques des décors qui magnifiaient les entrées. Elle montre ce que l’examen d’une partie réduite de l’édifice peut apporter à des problématiques générales touchant à la chronologie, à l’organisation du chantier et aux remplois, sans pour autant fournir une réponse définitive aux aspects chronologiques.
