Tick-borne encephalitis virus is the cause of much morbidity and sometimes a fatal infection. A vaccine based on formaldehyde inactivated virus is currently the only available way of preventing disease. This vaccine gives a high rate of seroconversion but there are reports of vaccination breakthrough, even in people who have demonstrated a neutralizing antibody response. The T cell response to inactivated TBE vaccine is largely unknown, but could be of importance for the effect of the vaccine. This study characterizes aspects of the T cell response by investigating the expression of two transcription factors, T-bet and GATA-3 with RT-PCR. T-bet is expressed in CD4+ T cells of the Th1 type, while GATA-3 is expressed in CD4+ T cells of the Th2 type. Our data show that vaccination with inactivated TBE vaccine leads to increase in expression of the T-bet gene when cells of vaccinated subjects are cultured with TBE virus. In contrast, the expression of GATA-3 remains unaffected by vaccination. Thus, this study suggests that the inactivated TBE vaccine leads to a Th1-like immune response in humans.

What follows is an investigation of unusual media behaviour. The 2003 Iraq War precipitated a series of demonstrations of unprecedented scale in a cause that often had majority support and challenged the authority of the government. The media’s well documented tendency to marginalise or ignore protest was at least partly suspended as newspapers cleared their front pages to report on demonstrations and the BBC sent senior journalists to interview marchers. For once, protesters were making the news. My research has revealed a very different pattern of reportage to that anticipated by the widely used ‘protest paradigm’ that predicts the marginalisation and even criminalisation of protest. Although the record shows great unevenness across different media outlets, the coverage of some of the anti-Iraq War protests appears more comprehensive, even-handed and at times sympathetic, than any equivalent example in the literature. The central task was to investigate the nature of the divergence and find ways of explaining it. In the process, this exceptional moment could be used to probe the media’s role in modern democracy and its attitudes to dissent at times of mass mobilisation and social stress. A combined textual and quantitative analysis of my research raised some interesting conclusions. Though important, structural or technological developments cannot explain the changes to the way protest was handled, as some of the literature argues. The evidence suggests that a contingent complex of social, ideological and political factors created a perfect storm that scrambled normal lines of communication. Interviews with participants and research into the context of the protests allowed me to fill out these suggestions and draw out more definite conclusions. At the same time, the analysis provided a test of theoretical models of media function, including versions of the ‘propaganda model’, broadly post-structuralist approaches, and more recent work suggesting a greater openness to dissent. Analysis of various theoretical approaches suggests, however, the importance of a model that can combine emphasis on the hegemonic role of the media, with sensitivity to contradictions that emerge between the moments of ‘maintaining consent’.

After the weakening of Turkish-Armenian relations and intensive American missionary activities, Armenians began to leave their homelands for educational, economic and political reasons. Emigration to the United States intensified in particular in response to the 1915 Techir (Relocation and Resettlement) Law. After achieving political rights in the United States, Armenian immigrants formed groups that began trying to influence U.S. government policy, working to win recognition of the alleged Armenian Genocide, financial assistance for Armenia, and other policies favorable to Armenia. The process that began resolution the alleged Armenia Genocide was removed from the historical dimension and moved to the political dimension and an international policy instrument was created. In the United States, the Armenian Diaspora strives to influence government policy systematically through diaspora organizations that carefully follow the international scene and advocate for United States foreign policies in favor of Armenia. In this study, the ultimate aims of the Armenia Diaspora over American politics and policy-making, and the activities of the Armenian Lobby will be examined.

Sub-endocardial fibres line the inner surface of both ventricles and are responsible for longitudinal oscillations of the mitral annulus, such oscillations may be measured using tissue Doppler echocardiography (IDE). During systole the annulus descends and during early diastole (ETDE) and atrial systole (ATDE) itascends. This thesis examined whether changes in the velocity of the annulus ineach of these phases of oscillation, measured using tissue Dopplerechocardiography (TDE), could determine the nature of increases in left ventricular size (pathological or physiological). Study one examined differences at rest in longitudinal velocities between individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), hypertension (HT), weightlifters, runners and controls, (n = 15 all groups) and all groups were aged between 20 - 36 years. The results demonstrated that both pathological groups had systolic and ETDE velocities significantly lower than groups with physiological hypertrophy (weightlifters or runners) or controls p < 0.05. AIDE however was not significantly different between groups. Additionally runners also demonstrated a significantly higher ETDE than either weightlifters or controls (p < 0.05). Binomial logistic regression identified longitudinal systolic velocity < 9 cm s" 1 and ETDE velocity < 11 cm s" 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological increases in heart size. Study two examined older subjects in order to determine whether the criteria set out in study one were applicable to senior athletes. The subject groups were the same as in study one however all subjects were aged between 36-55. In this case systolic annular velocity was significantly lower in groups with pathological LVH but ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 was a better differentiator. Binomial logistic regression identified ETDE < 9 cm s" 1 and a mitral E / A ratio < 1 as the best combination of variables to predict pathological LVH. Study three examined the age related changes in long axis function using the pooled data from studies one and two. This demonstrated that in the pathological LVH groups only ETDE / ATDE ratio was significantly correlated with age (r = - 0.5 p < 0.05) suggesting that there appears to be no summation of the effects of pathology and age on mitral annular velocities. The control groups demonstrated a significant age related reduction in all long axis variables (systolic velocity r = - 0.7 p < 0.05; ETDE r = - 0.6 p < 0.01; ATDE r = 0.5 p < 0.05; ETD E / ATDE r = - 0.5 p< 0.01). Weightlifters however did not demonstrate an age related decline in either systolic or diastolic annular velocities. Runners had no age related decline in systolic annular velocities, and whilst they had an age dependent fall in ETDE ( r = - 0.62 p < 0.05) the older runners ETDE were still significantly faster (p < 0.05) than that seen in control subjects. Study four investigated relationship between mitral annular velocity and VOiruK in runners, weightlifters and controls. These results demonstrated peak exercise E TDE strongly correlated to VO^PEAK (r = 0.8 p < 0.01). ConclusionsTaken together these data suggest that longitudinal velocities of the mitral annulus may be useful in determining the nature of increases in heart size, in addition the increased performance of endurance - trained athletes is due in part to functional changes of the long axis.

Title: The Physiology of Literature: A.A. Ukhtomskii and The Principle of The Dominant Russian physiologist Aleksei Alekseevich Ukhtomskii played exceptional role in the development of Russian humanities in general and Russian literary studies in particular; of special interest is his significant influence on the early works of Mikhail Bakhtin. He discovered and introduced into the scientific circulation the dominant principle that has become a point of departure in developing different important concepts such as dominant, chronotope, dialogue and others. This thesis, in a way, is a genealogical recounting of early 20th century Russian literary theory in light of its associations with the work of Ukhtomskii and a demonstration how his ideas can be used in further literary studies.

In this thesis William Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of The Shrew is analyzed from a feminist perspective. It is argued that the female characters Katherina and Bianca are mainly constructed through language expressed by male characters as binary oppositions. By an act of deconstruction within the play, these images, or constructed representations, are adjusted and somewhat reversed in the end. In addition, it is shown how the Induction, an introductory part of the play, adds aspects of construction and deconstruction, which supports an ironic reading and a questioning of the constructed gender roles.

This essay focuses on Maggie in The Mill on the Floss, by George Eliot. An examination of her life is presented which is anchored in feminist critical theory and focuses on the ordeal Maggie has to endure in a patriarchal society. Furthermore, the life of the Roma is examined through postcolonial theory and compared to Maggie’s. Many of the stereotypes that emerged about the Roma are also present in Maggie’s life. It is argued that Maggie embodies the stereotypes of the Roma through her encounters with different characters in the novel.

The present study seeks to address the general question of the relation between Levinas's ethics and his account of religion. The specific questions pursued here include the following: Is his ethics secular or religious, and in what sense is it so, either way? Does his ethics depend on religion? How does Levinas himself understand 'religion'? This thesis will show that any interpretation of Levinas's ethics cannot be separated from its religious dimension, namely, the openness to exteriority as Desire for the Infinite. Religion, despite all consolations it may bring, cannot dispense with this ethical demand

With the 2012 releases of The Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers, writer/director Joss Whedon moved beyond his cult status and into the mainstream. His cult television work, however, remains admired in both the popular imagination and in the academic world of popular culture studies. This year’s CSCA13 corresponds with the ten-year anniversary of the cancellation of Whedon’s first successful cult television show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Whedon’s other work, including Firefly, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog, Dollhouse, Angel, etc., are not only cult fan favorites, but favorites in popular culture academia. The participants on this panel will explore various aspects of Whedon and the Whedonverse, including: Whedon’s rhetorical framing regarding his transformation from cult director to mainstream phenom; his genre-bending frameworks across his various projects; his examination of gender roles; exploring and exploding Whedon’s use of mythology; and how Whedon’s characters manage to out-organize formal organizations.

Resumo:
A theology of women’s priesthood can be developed through an examination of the symbol and narrative of Christian religion. Metaphors of the body, the bride and the whore form a leitmotif through Christian scripture and tradition, and these have traditionally been interpreted from a phallocentric viewpoint. A feminist approach to scripture and tradition reveals that the woman priest causes a shift in the interpretation of these metaphors that impacts on many areas of Christian worship and life. The Eucharist, the central Anglican rite and nexus between the narrative of faith and the praxis of discipleship, is laden with symbols that, if effective, are also transformative for the worshipper. The priest, instrumental in the liturgy, has a key symbolic function in offering such potential for the Church community. When celebrating the Eucharist, the priest who is a woman recovers ignored or undervalued meanings within the associated symbolism which give rise to new possibilities theologically, liturgically and morally for Christian teaching and discipleship. The multivalent symbolism of priesthood thus acquires a new breadth and richness that addresses our understanding of the nature of the triune God, and of ourselves as beings created in the image of God and members of the Body of Christ. The woman priest causes a ‘collision’ with the received wisdom of traditional teaching and practice, and invites consideration of the genderisation of symbol and narrative, the exclusion of women from sacred rituals and spaces, and the lack of a female religious imaginary. A feminist reading of Paul Ricoeur, together with an engagement with Luce Irigaray and Grace Jantzen, demonstrates that philosophical and psychoanalytical inquiry offers transformative possibilities for the religious imaginary, for the recognition of sexual difference and for the possibility of woman as subject of culture. The woman priest, representative both of the divine and of humankind, has a key role in this process.

Resumo:
Recent years have witnessed an increase in the phenomenon of highly publicized trial in China. There have been studies exploring the relationship between the media and the political system, especially the judicial system in China. Scholarship on this topic has shown that the Chinese media are playing an increasingly important role in sustaining the regime. Specifically, they are becoming more influential over the outcomes of court cases and have developed to one of the most important actors in China's legal system (Wang & Tan, 2008; Liebman, 2005, 2010; Stockmann &Gallagher, 2011). The media-court relationship provides insights into China's politics, and more importantly, reflects the logics and rationale behind the Communist Party-state's governance. This thesis aims to contribute to existing knowledge on the functioning of the Chinese judicial system using as a case study, the trial of Yao Jiaxin, a young man prosecuted for a particularly heinous murder. This case study explores the dynamic relationship between the media and the courts in China under the framework of the “governmentality” of the Chinese Communist Party. The findings showed that the relationship between the media and the courts is changing, and the public has become an important actor in this relationship. As such, both the media and the courts are now more responsive to public opinion. This new dynamic is attributed to China’s evolution to a governmentality of “soft authoritarianism,” which is enabled by the Internet, mainly online forums and social media platforms in China. However, Yao’s case also suggested some limitations of China’s governmentality. First, social actors including the media and the court are facing challenges in achieving a balance between being responsive to the public and maintaining their professional integrity. Secondly, “soft” authoritarianism is only a means to an end, not an end in itself. Individual interests are expected to be sacrificed for the sake of collective interests under this governmentality.

In a common description, to play a game is to step inside a concrete or metaphorical magic circle where special rules apply. In video game studies, this description has received an inordinate amount of criticism which the paper argues has two primary sources: 1. a misreading of the basic concept of the magic circle and 2. a somewhat rushed application of traditional theoretical concerns onto games. The paper argues that games studies must move beyond conventional criticisms of binary distinctions and rather look at the details of how games are played. Finally, the paper proposes an alternative metaphor for game-playing, the puzzle piece.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
The present research deals with the application of Julia Kristeva s psychoanalytic theories of the mind to a selection of William Shakespeare s plays. Kristeva s key psychoanalytic terms the symbolic, the semiotic and the abject are first elaborated in detail and are then applied to different situations and characters in the plays. The plays discussed in this thesis are A Midsummer Night s Dream, As You Like It and The Taming of the Shrew for the comedy section, Richard II, 1 & 2 Henry IV and Coriolanus for the English and Roman History section, and Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and King Lear for the Tragedy section. The reason for choosing the above plays is that I believe there is a gap of knowledge in this regard and no thorough research on this scale has been conducted up to this time. The intention is to discuss and explicate the moments in which the dramatic heroes undergo some unconscious-driven experiences that can be best explained by Kristeva s post-Freudian psychoanalytic approach. In short, what I am going to show in the present study is the psychoanalytic assumption that Shakespearean characters, forced by internal or external elements, leave the symbolic and take refuge in the semiotic. In such moments, the characters inevitably face the abject which is an archaic memory comprising the elements of enchantment and horror. The abject can be best described as the archaic memories of a distant past when the self had no border and was associated with the semiotic, a subject s harmonious beginning. In its early childhood, to become a subject, an individual breaks its semiotic ties and, by so doing, enters the realm of the symbolic which is associated with grammar and law. The symbolic awards a subject a distinct identity and helps it stay on the route to signification. Kristeva s understanding of the process of individuation is explained by her subject in process , a journey in which a subject always oscillates between the symbolic and the semiotic. The key point in Kristeva s psychoanalytic thought is that the semiotic does not fade away and hovers around a subject s border of identity and remains a constant threat for its symbolic identity. To remain immune from the annihilating forces of the semiotic, a subject has to remain vigilant and protect its borders of identity. My main goal in this thesis is to show that, in some particular situations in the plays, Shakespearean characters fail to remain vigilant and, inevitably, their subjects are exposed to the abject. In other words, in moments of ambition, anger, love or fear, they surrender or take refuge in the semiotic and face the abject. Although Shakespearean plays have previously been approached by Sigmund Freud s (and some other major practitioners ) theories, the application of Kristeva s psychoanalytic theories of the mind gives the opportunity to approach the plays from a new perspective that would otherwise have remained unknown. Thus, the originality of this research lies in its extensive application of Kristeva s theories to the selected Shakespearean plays, theories that, although they derive from those of Freud, have the potential to shed light on those psychoanalytic aspects of the plays that Freud either neglected or left unfinished.

Resumo:
MMORPGs such as WORLD OF WARCRAFT can be understood as interactive representations of war. Within the frame provided by the program the players experience martial conflicts and thus a “virtual war.” The game world however requires a technical and as far as possible invisible infrastructure which has to be protected against attacks: Infrastructure means e.g. the servers on which the data of the player characters and the game’s world are saved, as well as the user accounts, which have to be protected, among other things, from “identity theft.” Besides the war on the virtual surface of the program we will therefore describe the invisible war concerning the infrastructure, the outbreak of which is always feared by the developers and operators of online-worlds, requiring them to take precautions. Furthermore we would like to focus on “virtual game worlds” as places of complete surveillance. Since action in these worlds is always associated with the production of data, total observation is theoretically possible and put into practice by the so-called “game master.” The observation of different communication channels (including user forums) serves to monitor and direct the actions on the virtual battlefield subtly, without the player feeling that his freedom is being limited. Finally, we will compare the fictional theater of war in WORLD OF WARCRAFT to the vision of “Network-Centric Warfare,” since it has often been observed that the analysis of MMORPGs is useful to the real trade of war. However, we point out what an unrealistic theater of war WORLD OF WARCRAFT really is.

Min was one of the earliest known Egyptian deities and his origins remain obscure but, because of his association with fertility and the kingship, he retained his importance from the Predynastic Period into the Roman era. Although his depiction as an ithyphallic, mummified male with a flail balanced above his raised right arm remained unaltered throughout, the overall iconography of Min did exhibit changes, notably with the introduction in the Sixth Dynasty of what is accepted as a lettuce plant resembling the modern Cos or Romaine cultivar of Lactuca sativa L. It is the association of Min with the lettuce plant that is the subject of this thesis. It is the received opinion in the literature that the plant was offered to Min, a fertility god, as an aphrodisiac. Apart from two seminal works that are over fifty years old, little research has been conducted into the association of Min with the lettuce. Much early research is in need of re-examination because of changes in social attitudes and research techniques and this the thesis seeks to redress. The aims of the research are to review the evidence for the lettuce plant in ancient Egypt and to re-examine the previously noted association of the god Min with a plant identified as lettuce. The study is primarily library and museum based and examines the history and nature of lettuce in ancient Egypt. The nature of 'aphrodisiac' is examined and the use of such substances in ancient Egypt is compared with modern usage. Min as a god of fertility is re-analysed and, finally, texts and Ptolemaic temple inscriptions are examined for evidence as to why and by whom lettuce was offered. The research results are applied to a study of Min as a god of fertility. The evidence indicates that lettuce was offered by the king to Min to ensure the fertility and regeneration of agriculture and of the king which would secure the continuation of his line and humanity. There is no evidence to suggest lettuce was offered as an aphrodisiac to increase the sexual desire of the god.

The oral traditions in the Islamic world presented only the moral benefits of Jihad. Yet, the fact is that, though the moral benefits continued to exist before and after the First Crusade, though the interest seemed to have been present and the necessary intellectual theories continued on, Muslims did not advance the practical Jihad. Nonetheless, the disastrous Second Crusade struck a powerful chord among Muslims. It forced Muslims to battle for their very survival, and to do so they would have to adapt, but equally they could only survive by drawing on their imperial inheritance built up over centuries. A number of concerns identified with the “golden age” of the Islamic empire influenced the Jihad movements for Muslims associated the imperial traditions with Islam itself. Given the examples of the First and Second Crusades, this study proposes that the idea of “Islamic Empire” constituted Muslims’ practical response to the crusades.

Wheeler, Ichsani. "The auditability of soil carbon at the farm scale". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/10449.

Resumo:
Abstract — Auditability of soil carbon at the farm scale. There is a strong and growing interest in restoring degraded soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in agricultural lands, both for the purpose of generating carbon offsets and for greater farm resilience through increasing the delivery of associated ecosystem services. In order to achieve attribution of carbon offsets to improved SOC management, an efficient method to measure ∆SOC with sufficient statistical confidence is required. However, there is considerable temporal risk associated with non-permanence in conjunction with the requirement to maintain SOC stocks for 100 years. As such, there is a need for an equitable method to attribute carbon offsets that respects both landholders and the atmosphere. To address these ends, this thesis attends to the question of the auditability of soil carbon stocks on farms and ultimately develops a soil carbon auditing protocol. A direct measurement approach is employed with a stratified simple random sampling (StSRS) aimed at whole farms. This design utilises a predicted SOC distribution field to capture all available relationships with the local covariates to enable univariate stratification. This approach was tested on four farms to determine baseline SOC stocks and their uncertainty — finding two of four farms had suitable surveys for repeat measurement under high sequestration rates (0.5 Mg ha-1 yr-1) without alteration (Chapter 3). This Chapter (and portions of the proceeding Chapters) describes and tests some basic elements outlined in the patent entitled 'A Method of Quantifying Soil Carbon — Patent WO 2011150472 A1'. Once a baseline survey has been collected there is a need to optimise stratification of the new SOC prediction field (incorporating updated local information) for repeat measurement using StSRS (Chapter 4). Further from this optimisation the tradeable portion of ∆SOC was linked to the lower confidence bound (exceedance probability) of the estimation — linking the quality of surveys to the awarded offsets. This enabled optimisation on the basis of diminishing returns for increased sampling investment. Further, by relating background SOC spatial variation to plausible sequestration rates, survey intensities and reasonable revisit times; it was found that trading on a lower confidence bound of between 60-70% of the ∆SOC estimate was optimal. A lower confidence bound of 95% was highly unrealistic given the need for reasonable revisit times and sampling intensities and over-penalised direct measurement without logical basis. Concerns over natural SOC variation could be better addressed through the approach to offset generation used to account for non-permanence. Generic advice for sample size based on expert knowledge of the range of SOC was also developed for simple random sampling. Additionally, generic advice on sample size efficiency that could be gained from stratification — dependant on the nature of SOC spatial variation — is also provided. With an eye to enabling easier future design of initial StSRS surveys for areas without prior information, regional mapping of SOC is examined. From this examination it was determined that when using decision trees, mapping average SOC to the desired depth is a more accurate approach than mapping by incremental depths (Chapter 5). To address the stumbling block of non-permanence, the most generically favourable methods for generating carbon offsets from ∆SOC were examined in Chapter 6. From this examination it is suggested that `incrementally weighting offset value evenly through time' rather than `upfront sale of offsets followed by temporal liability'; was the most straightforward and user friendly approach. Additionally, to ensure validity against what the atmosphere actually 'sees', a simple age-dependant correction for awarded offsets in the event of re-emission of stocks is developed. The incremental weighting of offsets allows aggregation to full credits across space to produce a saleable credit with no attendant liabilities to the purchaser and reasonable liability for the seller. From the synthesis of the preceding chapters a SOC auditing protocol is proposed in Chapter 7. Its applicability to the land sector is defined and the strengths and weakness of its support is discussed. Finally, numerous avenues for future research for both academic interest and to improve the system are suggested.

An analysis of both the placement and the philosophical connections between The Tale of Melibee and The Parson’s Tale suggests that a highly individual spiritual philosophy is being presented within The Canterbury Tales. This philosophy is exemplified via an analysis of both the role of The Tale of Melibee within the work, and the manner in which it is historically developed. The highest form of individual spirituality is revealed within The Tale of Melibee, through the spiritual developments occurring within the character Melibeus and his wife Prudence. This development serves to unify the exemplified extremes of satire and spirituality presented throughout the work, as well as to illustrate the manner in which the individual human being develops his or her own individual spirituality through an active engagement with life, which in turn promotes a unity of the aforementioned extremes.

The paper aims to bring the experience of playing videogames closer to objective knowledge, where the experience can be assessed and falsified via an operational concept. The theory focuses on explaining the basic elements that form the core of the process of the experience. The name of puppetry is introduced after discussing the similarities in the importance of experience for both videogames and theatrical puppetry. Puppetry, then, operationalizes the gaming experience into a concept that can be assessed.

It is an unfortunate and cruel reality that both government and armed groups used child soldiers during armed conflict. Child soldiers have become an integral part of government forces as well as insurgent groups in Africa and elsewhere. Most of them are being exploited as combatants, while others perform functions, such as porters, spies who are able to enter small spaces, cooks, messengers, lookouts, and even suicide bombers. Some of the most disturbing aspects of child soldiering are that some of them are being forced to kill or are themselves killed, sexually abused and are exposed to drugs. The use of child soldiers in conflicts is not a recent phenomenon and has indeed become a common practice that characterises modern conflicts. Recruitment is usually carried out forcefully or voluntarily by both government and rebel forces. The difference between these two types of recruitment is not always clear since their decision to join is always influenced by external factors. Examples of such reasons for voluntary recruitment include the desire to revenge, adventure, peer pressure, and need for belonging and survival. Concerning the reason for survival, some argue that, the children do not actually choose freely to become combatants, but are rather forced by circumstances. There are numerous reasons for the continuous targeting of children by armed forces and armed groups. These include shortage of combatants, the fact that children are easy to train physically and psychologically, and also that children are obedient and are readily available. The recruited children are compelled to take part in brutal induction ceremonies, where they are threatened and forced to kill or witness the killing of someone they know.

From the perspective of the Hebrew Bible the Egyptians represented the quintessential 'other' to the Israelites - lascivious, idolatrous, tyrannical, hostile and murderous. The biblical characterization of the Egyptians may be explained by the historical context in which early Israel emerged, a context in which Egypt represented a political, military and cultural threat to Israel's survival and distinctiveness, and in which the Israelites came to regard themselves as a covenanted people, in a unique and exclusive relationship with their God. This biblical perspective was inherited to some extent by the early Christian community, which according to the apostle Paul has been grafted into Israel's salvation history, and thus continued to associate the Egyptians with idolatry and base morality. The Islamic assessment of the ancient Egyptians, as presented particularly by the Qur'an, extra-canonical works and commentaries, and how it compares to biblical and extra-biblical views, is the subject of this study. Drawing on distinctions of covenanted and missionary identities as described in Anthony Smith's Chosen Peoples (2003), this thesis hypothesizes that the Qur'an and Islamic tradition with their pronounced missionary thrust present a rather different image of the 'other', particularly the Egyptians, given the historical context in which Islam emerged. This study presents a unique examination of the Egyptians in the Qur'an and extra-canonical texts as related through their encounters with the prophets Ibrahim, Yusuf, Musa and 'Isa. It combines a detailed exegetical and intertextual study of revelant Qur'anic verses with an analysis of extra-canonical texts such as the qisas al-anbiya' and traditions such as are found in al-Tabari's al-Ta'rikh al-rusul wa'l-muluk. Moreover, this thesis addresses historical, Egyptological and archaeological issues, and how the Qur'anic portrayals of the Egyptians in particular reflect the concerns and values of the early ummah, a community of believers which not only struggled to survive the hostilities of the Quraysh, but which sought to bring them and others to faith in the God of Ibrahim.
