Abstract This wide-ranging conversation with Black cultural theorist Saidiya Hartman—occasioned by the twenty-fifth anniversary of her groundbreaking first book, Scenes of Subjection, to be republished this year in an edition by Norton—explores the author's shifting approaches to the visual over time, the limitations and potentialities of the archive for its discontents, and the models she has both turned to and herself invented—most notably the concept of “critical fabulation”—in the ongoing attempt to find ethical modes of engaging African/Diasporic life, thought, and form in an anti-Black world.

For the first time in English, we present many of Hijikata's aesthetic and poetic texts. These texts are put into context by Kurihara Nanako's introductory essay. The section includes an interview with Hijikata and a conversation between Hijikata and Japanese experimental theatre innovator Suzuki Tadashi. Hijikata Tatsumi died in 1986, but his impact on Japanese and world performance remains strong. One of the founders of butoh, Hijikata's dances were “blistering images of emaciation and death”, yet beautiful.

Conversational implicature was proposed by Grice (1989) into four maxims. Those are: 1) quantity maxim, 2) quality maxim, 3) relation maxim, and 4) manner maxim. It is affects in the communication in society. It is also occurred in the communicative impairment. One of the phenomena is on the schizophrenia which affect on the deficit pragmatic and the ability to comprehend the implied meaning. The data of this research is from the representative utterances from John Nash which deals with something the speaker believes. The reason in specify the data is due to the limitation of this research in order to get more details about the pattern of the implicature in the believe of schizophrenic character. The data is classified into the classification by Searle and Vanderveken which is concentrated in the representative speech act before analysing it in implicature. The theory by Grice about the four maxims is used in this research to know about the conversational implicature by the main character who is diagnosed with schizophrenia. The results shows that most dominant flouting maxim is on the relation maxim. 13 chosen data which deals with the floating maxim shows the result as follows: 3 data in quantity maxim; 1 datum in quality maxim; 6 data in relation maxim; and 3 data in manner maxim. In flouted quantity maxim utterances do not deliver well in the conversation due to schizophrenia. It deals with the ability from speaker to have in line in the topic. The flouting maxim in quantity maxim and manner maxim has the same percentage. From flouting quantity maxim, Nash does over utterance in delivering the message so that the hearers do not understand what Nash mean. The flouted manner maxim indicates the inability of the speaker in delivering in a good manner and has a sufficient meaning in the utterance. While the fluted quality maxim does not affect to the conversation.

Most well known for her large-scale silhouette installations, Kara Walker offers a critique of African-American history, as well as current cultural conditions, through a series of images that are a mixture of beautiful and grotesque, tranquil and violent, real and fantasized. Her work has provoked both criticism and commendation. In this paper, I bring Deborah Britzman’s (2009) educational theory into conversation with Mark Reinhardt’s (2007) aesthetic theory to examine the debates around Walker’s work through the questions: How might we read the anxieties brought about by Walker’s work? And, what might her work bring to bear on education?

AbstractFilmAid Kenya (FAK) runs film schools in refugee camps, and each year FAK trains dozens of young filmmakers in the Kakuma and Dadaab camps. Some FAK graduates go on to work as wedding photographers and freelance video journalists—jobs that have surprising demand in the camps. FAK’s most lasting contribution, however, is empowering young people to tell their personal stories. Many of the beautiful, often surprising, films made by FAK students have gone on to win film festival awards and contribute to the global conversation about refugees. When the films do not find audiences outside the camps, there is a cathartic power in the act of communicating. FAK has also built a creative community within the refugee camps. Students and graduates spend time at the FAK compound on their days off, even when the power supply is routinely suspended, disabling the cameras and editing stations.

The reforms of the late nineteenth century did help protect New England’s drinking water. The plague of water-borne diseases that made the region’s cities so infamously dangerous to live in seemed to be in retreat. For a moment, it looked as if the new century would bring a world in which there did not have to be trade-offs between economic development and environmental quality. The ideal articulated by Lyman and Mills—that professional expertise would transcend conflicts of interests between manufacturers and reformers—seemed at hand. Yet there were still problems that these optimists overlooked. And these problems broke into view again in the new century. Despite the health gains, New England’s rivers and streams continued to receive massive influxes of pollution of both industrial wastes and human sewage. The larger cities along the major river systems continued their practice of dumping raw sewage downstream, while manufacturers still saw running water as a natural disposal system for their wastes. Industrial wastes, although less central in the conversation around public health and the environment, were clearly polluting water systems, and reformers never completely gave up the struggle to clean water of industrial pollutants. In its 1896 report, the Massachusetts State Board of Health discussed possible solutions to the problems of “waste liquors or sewage from those manufacturing industries in the State which pollute or threaten to pollute our rivers and ponds.” The Lawrence station experimented with different methods of removing industrial wastes. Yet the “problem of successful and economical disposal of this sewage [remained].” As people began to look at clean water as an aesthetic as well as a health issue, the ability of water to sustain live fish, which had been dismissed twenty years earlier, now became a concern. Commissions on fisheries that had focused attention on fishways and fish cultivation in the nineteenth century began to revisit the issue of water pollution as they noticed their hatchery fish dying in polluted waters; oyster growers complained to the commissions that their oyster beds were being polluted.

Joshua Ralston frankly acknowledges Barth’s dismissive comments about Islam and the possibility of Muslim-Christian dialogue. Despite these comments, Ralston seeks to engage Barth as a conversation partner in comparative theological work by placing his dialectical understanding of revelation as the veiling and unveiling of God in conversation with Ash’arite Sunni thinking about God and revelation, specifically Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’s Al-Maqsad al-Asna (The 99 Beautiful Names of God). Both theologians affirm the particularity of revelation that comes only from God, and both reject the possibilities of any analogy of being (analogia entis). For both, to speak rightly about God is emphatically to speak “after revelation”—so analogy and reason may be used, but only in light of what God has first revealed (in Jesus Christ or in the Qur’an).

Abstract You probably remember growing into certain types of slang when you spent more time in the schoolyard than you do now. Of course, there was the broad range of profanity (fuck and shit), experimentally crude sexual expressions (suck off and carpetmuncher), romantic metaphors (like stone cold fox and hung), not to mention all of the yo, like, and all that focused and punctuated the flow of teenage conversation: “Yo, she was all, like, baked and shit at the concert.” Some of the slang, though, was a lot cleaner and, unexpectedly, rhymed: “Dude, you show up late in her class and you are cruisin’ for a bruisin’,” and “I told her I’d wash the car if I could borrow it, and it was, like, slam, bam, thank you ma’am, I had the keys and was out the door,” and “[Caprice:] ‘Those boots are sick.’ [Haley:] ‘Hey, whatever floats your boat, chica.’ ” Kids who spoke like that were too cool for school, and after they rhymed in conversation they’d say, “Hey, I’m a poet and didn’t know it.” But they did know it, knew it so well that they couldn’t help pointing it out, couldn’t help stretching it just one rhyme more. Slang has various social uses, especially on the schoolyard, even when it rhymes. But its value isn’t limited to social group identity, social perceptions and attitudes, or social interaction. Some of slang’s value is aesthetic, if we interpret the term aesthetic broadly. The first definition of the adjective aesthetic you’ll find in any dictionary will be something like, quoting the New Oxford American Dictionary (2005), “concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty.” Most slang is not “beautiful” in any conventional sense.

In the late 1960s, LIFE magazine was one of the most widely read and influential periodicals in the world. Renowned for its photojournalism, the general-interest magazine covered all aspects of American life. The November 21, 1969, edition was no exception. It included a review of what would be The Beatles’ final studio album, a profile of Ohio State University head football coach Woody Hayes, and an advertisement for a commemorative book on that summer’s moon landing. It also featured an article on a little-known University of Chicago psychiatrist, Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, and her groundbreaking work with terminally ill patients. In an era when public discourse about death and dying was almost non-existent and when many physicians believed that a patient was better off not knowing his or her prognosis, Kübler-Ross was encouraging candid and open conversations with people about their impending deaths. Her innovative approach and courage to challenge the status quo drew the interest of LIFE editor Loudon Wainwright. His captivating story introducing Kübler-Ross and her new book, On Death and Dying, would forever change the national conversation about end-of-life and grief. The article described Kübler-Ross’s seminar teaching clinicians about the experiences of terminally ill patients. Physicians, nurses, chaplains, and medical students watched through a one-way mirror as she interviewed a twenty-two-year-old woman who had been diagnosed just two weeks earlier with leukemia, which at that time was almost always fatal. Large black-and-white pictures of the patient showed a vibrant and beautiful young woman with long hair and a wide smile. She looked nothing like someone close to death, which in some ways was the point. She talked about her diagnosis and understanding that leukemia would almost certainly kill her. Her willingness to openly discuss the prospect of her own death must have been astounding to those observing the interview. Kübler-Ross theorized that people facing their own mortality proceed through five stages prior to their death. In the first stage, the person is unable or unwilling to accept that he or she is going to die (Denial).
