These are the first two volumes out of the ten planned by the National Museum in Cracow, which together will constitute the publication of the body of work donated to the museum by Feliks “Manggha” Jasieński. One volume presents the collector’s creative biography and the history of his various collections. There are also attempts to interpret the nature of the content of his collections, mainly woodcuts and other Japanese objects, as well as modern Polish art, paintings, engravings (together with a set of European engravings) and decorative arts. The second volume is the first part of a monumental catalogue of the collection which covers drawings, watercolours and pastels by Polish artists. The subsequent eight volumes are envisaged to cover particular parts of this extensive collection (of Polish, European and Eastern paintings, drawings, sculpture, engravings and decorative arts). This enormous undertaking marks the 100th anniversary of Jasieński’s donation (1920–2020), and, as Zofia Gułubiew put it, is intended to visualise and fix the extent and variety of the collection in the public’s awareness. The publishing project by the National Museum in Cracow is extremely valuable, and it should be hoped that it will succeed as intended.

IntroductionParkinsonian motor signs are the most frequent of the genuine motor abnormalities present in drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia, and are also present in patients with a first-episode of psychosis (FEP).ObjectiveTo study whether there are differences in basal ganglia volumes depending on the presence of Parkinsonism in FEP.MethodsForty-six patients with a FEP were included in the study. Twenty-three controls were included to normalise patients’ brain volume data. Parkinsonism was assessed with the UKU scale. Brain volumes were obtained with MRI (1.5 Tesla Siemens Avanto). Reconstruction and volumetric segmentation was made with the Freesurfer© software (http://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/). Patients were divided into two groups, considering the presence/absence of Parkinsonism (UKU total score cutoff point = 4). Patients have been treated with antipsychotics a mean of less than 2 months. There were not significant differences in the total exposure to antipsychotics between both groups. ANCOVAS were performed including gender as covariate.ResultsPatients with Parkinsonism showed a trend towards significance to exhibit reduced volumes in the left caudate and right putamen (Fig. 1).ConclusionsFEP patients who exhibit Parkinsonian signs tend to show reduced left caudate and right putamen volumes in the early phases of psychotic illness, after correcting by gender.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

IntroductionDespite strong evidence that the pathophysiology of tic disorders (TD) involves structural and functional disturbances of the basal ganglia, inconsistent findings from several TD imaging studies have supported contradictory conclusions.ObjectiveTo find brain structural differences between children with of TD and the health children and verify the pathogenesis hypothesis of that basal ganglia play an important role in this disorder.MethodThe right handedness, first-episode TD children were chosen. Yale global tic severity scale (YGTSS) was used to assess the tic severity. MRI scan was performed on TD children and the controls. The volumes of caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus and total intracranial volume were measured on high resolution MR images. We compared the volumes, relative volumes and asymmetry index, AI between groups.ResultsTotally 11 patients finished this study with two excluded for the unclear image caused by tic and 18 subjects (9 TD patients and 9 controls) were finally analyzed. The right globus pallidus is significantly larger in TD patients. The volumes of left caudate increased significantly in both TD patients and controls. There was no significant difference in asymmetry index between two groups, relative volumes did not correlate significantly with the severity of tic and the course of disease.ConclusionThe right globus pallidus may be the primary pathological change of TD. Asymmetry indexes between the two groups are not significantly different. The relative volume of any structure of basal ganglia has no significant correlation with the severity of tic and the course of disease.

The authorized history of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival was originally intended to commemorate its 25th anniversary in 1978, when the festival was enjoying critical and fiscal success under Robin Phillips. When the history finally appeared in 1985 it covered thirty seasons. The five-year expansion changed the nature of the Stratford story because those extra five years included the crisis of 1980 and John Hirsch’s initial seasons with their ballooning deficits and declining attendance. Providing sufficient coverage of these recent events necessitated publishing Stratford in two volumes. Scholar/ critic John Pettigrew wrote most of book one, which covers up to the end of Michael Langham’s artistic directorship in 1968. After Pettigrew’s death, Southam critic Jamie Portman agreed to complete the project and wrote most of volume two in the same careful judicious manner as his predecessor.

The effect of pressure, solids concentration and volume of slurry on total and two-phase filtrate volumes was investigated to establish optimum conditions for routine laboratory filtration. Full factorial design with three levels was utilized to obtain 27 unique experiments. The slurry used was prepared by mixing crushed and sieved bentonite clay of 75 microns with distilled water at different concentrations as obtained from the design of experiment. A filter press was utilized and the results were used to calibrate a two-phase exponential equation for sludge filtration to extract the first and second stage filtrate volumes. The total filtrate volume improved with increasing applied pressure and decreasing solids concentration. A slurry volume of 0.22 litres was found to be ideal. Similar effects were noticed on the first and second stage filtrate volume except that an optimum was discovered at 0.18 litres of slurry. The second stage filtration produced an upward curve with a point of inflection at a range of 0.18 to 0.22 litres of slurry. The second stage filtrate volume is also discovered to be directly proportional to the total filtrate volume. This connection may be considered for use to assess the filterability of other slurries.

The books “Indonesian Gastronomy Volumes 1 and 2,” written by Professor Murdijati-Gardjito and colleagues, are interesting because they are among the first gastronomic books authored by experts in Food Science and Technology. While representing a coherent work, the two volumes focus on different aspects. The first one explains aspects of Indonesian culinary history at the national and global levels, including the changes that have taken place in the contemporary era. The second volume pays attention to the technical aspects of physical changes and chemical reactions in the food-making process. Volume 2 also describes Indonesian cuisine based on geographical location and ethnic affiliation.

The goal of the first project was to evaluate strategies for determining the in vitro intrinsic clearance (CLint) of dextrorphan (DR) as metabolized by the UGT2B7 enzyme to obtain dextrorphan glucuronide (DR-G). A direct injection liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method was used to monitor products using the pseudo-first-order (PFO) model. Standard enzymatic incubations were also quantified using LC-MS. These data were fit utilizing both PFO and Michaelis-Menten (MM) models to determine estimates of kinetic parameters. The CLint was determined to be 0.28 (± 0.08) µL/min/mg protein for a baculovirus insect cell-expressed UGT2B7 enzyme. This is the first confirmation that dextrorphan is specifically metabolized by UGT2B7 and the first report of these kinetic parameters. Simulated chromatographic data were used to determine the precision and accuracy in the estimation of peak volumes in comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC). Volumes were determined both by summing the areas in the second dimension chromatograms via the moments method and by fitting the second dimension areas to a Gaussian peak. When only two second dimension signals are substantially above baseline, the accuracy and precision are poor because the solution to the Gaussian fitting algorithm is indeterminate. The fit of a Gaussian peak to the areas of the second dimension peaks is better at predicting the peak volume when there are at least three second dimension injections above the limit of detection. Based on simulations where the sampling interval and sampling phase were varied, we conclude for well-resolved peaks that the optimum precision in peak volumes in 2D separations will be obtained when the sampling ratio is approximately two. This provides an RSD of approximately 2 % for the signal-to-noise (S/N) used in this work. The precision of peak volume estimation for experimental data was also assessed, and RSD values were in the 4-5 % range. We conclude that the poorer precision found in the 2D-LC experimental data as compared to 1D-LC is due to a combination of factors, including variations in the first dimension peak shape related to undersampling and loss in S/N due to the injection of multiple smaller peaks onto the second dimension column.

As part of a larger study, two low-risk primigravida (first pregnancy) women who intended to breastfeed and their newborns were audio- and videotaped in the first two hours after birth. For this pilot study, recordings were analyzed to investigate early infant crying patterns. One mother-infant pair remained in close contact immediately following delivery with short periods of separation. The other mother-infant pair experienced longer periods of separation during the first two hours. Although data are preliminary, the separation cries of the infants were noticeably different perceptually than the cries produced in contact with mother. The separation cries were shorter in duration, with a higher first peak frequency, and a less distinct harmonic structure than those of non-separation cries. Results suggest that a separation distress cry is biologically plausible, both in terms of tension and stress in the newborn’s vocal physiology and because of the newborn’s dependence on the mother. Confirmation and expansion of these findings could serve as a motivating factor in preventing the separation of mothers and newborns immediately after birth

Resumo:
Events with jets produced in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions can be used to study distributions sensitive to the vector boson fusion (VBF) process at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. This process is interesting to study because of its similarity to the VBF production of a Higgs boson as well as its sensitivity to new physics via the WWZ triple gauge coupling. Evidence for electroweak Zjj production beyond the 5 level is presented using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 8 TeV by the ATLAS experiment in 2012. This constitutes the first observation of a VBF-like process. The detector-corrected cross sections measured in two fi ducial regions are in excellent agreement with the Standard Model expectations and have also been used to constrain anomalous triple gauge couplings. Furthermore, detector-corrected cross sections and diff erential distributions for inclusive Zjj production are presented in di fferent regions of phase space with varying sensitivity to the electroweak Zjj component. In addition, a performance study of the tracking algorithms used in the ATLAS high-level trigger system is presented.

Abstract Laurence sterne published his masterpiece The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in nine slender volumes in the final decade of his life, between 1759 and 1767. The first two volumes appeared in York, Dublin, and London by January 1760. On 25 March the advertisement for the second (London) edition proudly announced a frontispiece designed by William Hogarth. Volumes 3 and 4 (again with a frontispiece by Hogarth) appeared a year later, in January 1761, and in December of that same year volumes 5 and 6 came out, with the unusual announcement that “Every book is signed by the author.” And indeed, to protect his book from being pirated, Sterne signed all copies of the first and second (revised) editions of volume 5, and of the first editions of volumes 7 and 9 on the first text page: 12,750 signatures in a neat (and still perfectly legible) hand.

This Afterword provides an overview of Byrd scholarship in the three decades from the publication of Byrd Studies (Cambridge, 1992), to the appearance of Byrd Studies in the Twenty-First Century (Clemson, SC, 2023). After an account of the origin of the earlier volume, of which the author of this Afterword is the co-editor, attention is drawn to subjects common to articles in both volumes, and the similarities and differences in the approaches to these subjects by their respective authors are noted. There are also articles in the earlier volume on topics which are not discussed in the later one, and vice versa, and these too receive comment. Observations are offered regarding the significance of these presences and absences, and two topics which are not covered in either volume, and which are scarcely mentioned elsewhere in Byrd scholarship, are put forward as possible candidates for further research, though it is noted that predicting trends in the broad field of scholarship which surrounds Byrd can be imponderable. The Afterword concludes with a celebration of Byrd’s musical greatness, and the unique narrative aura which radiates from each of his works.

All metals corrode with exposure to electrolytes. This is a fact of life experienced by owners of marine platforms and structures throughout the world. Computational modeling methodologies have been applied to evaluate and design corrosion prevention systems. All computational work to date makes similar assumptions of a uniform electrolyte. This is a valid assumption for structures in large volumes of constantly refreshing electrolyte in which the constitutive characteristics of the electrolyte can be approximated by a uniform mixture. There is experimental evidence that this assumption is not valid for smaller volumes. The need for a more general solution which is valid in these smaller enclosed spaces is being driven by future designs that place corrosion prevention systems in these areas. The sensitivity of solutions on variations in electrolyte conductivity is unknown. In this work preliminary results are presented that demonstrate the need to take into account the spatial variation in electrolyte characteristics for small enclosed volumes of electrolyte. Two geometries (a gap between plates and a two material concentric cylinder corrosion cell) are used to demonstrate the differences between uniform and spatial varying electrolyte. Future work is outlined which will take into account more physical parameters related to electrochemical corrosion.

As a topic for this conference I chose the first Romanian Encyclopedia, a luxury edition for those times, published in Sibiu in three volumes during “two centuries”: the first volume appeared in 1898, the second – in 1900, and the last – in 1904. This old and rare book is found in Special Collections of the Central Library. The volume was published with the support of the Association for Romanian Literature and the Culture of the Romanian People, edited by Dr. Diaconovich. The first Romanian Encyclopedia is an exceptional edition with an enviable informational volume, a true jewel of cultural and spiritual heritage. Certainly, several hundred scientists, scholars, writers, historians, lawyers, engineers, etc., from all fields of human activity and many countries of the world, have contributed to this titanic work. We will not be wrong if we affirm that all the knowledge of mankind until 1905 was included on these few thousand pages; the work being well located in Romania and in the entire Romanian cultural space.

The interface capturing approach to volume-of-fluid (VOF) simulation relies on high-resolution spatial discretization of the volume fraction equation, without explicit reconstruction of the phase interface within computational control volumes. One advantage of this approach is that it may be applied on general topology meshes in a straightforward manner. This paper investigates the performance of two different high-resolution discretization schemes used for the solution of the volume fraction equation on three-dimensional unstructured meshes. The schemes are used to obtain results for several simple test problems, including convection of a round and a square phase profile in a uniform fluid stream, two-phase oil and water flow in an inclined channel, and convection of a round jet-in-crossflow. The performance of the two schemes is compared in terms of their ability to minimize the effects of numerical dissipation, which tends to “smear” the phase interface over several computational control volumes. It is shown that a recently proposed scheme that relies on maximization of the volume fraction gradient in the region of the interface yields substantially better results than a more commonly used NVD (normalized variable diagram) based scheme, as well as traditional first and second-order upwind schemes.

Abstract In this paper a two step approach for the transformation of design features to manufacturing features is presented. In the first stage of the proposed algorithm, a methodology for handling protrusion features by the decomposition of the surrounding volume into basic, negative, machinable volumes is discussed. In the second stage called the feature refinement stage, relevant manufacturing information is appended to the negative feature model resulting from the first stage. The proposed methodology can be used to support automated process planning. Practical examples and computer implementation in an object oriented feature based design system are also presented.

In this paper, we present a novel double diffusion based neural radiance field, dubbed DD-NeRF, to reconstruct human body geometry and render the human body appearance in novel views from a sparse set of images. We first propose a double diffusion mechanism to achieve expressive representations of input images by fully exploiting human body priors and image appearance details at two levels. At the coarse level, we first model the coarse human body poses and shapes via an unclothed 3D deformable vertex model as guidance. At the fine level, we present a multi-view sampling network to capture subtle geometric deformations and image detailed appearances, such as clothing and hair, from multiple input views. Considering the sparsity of the two level features, we diffuse them into feature volumes in the canonical space to construct neural radiance fields. Then, we present a signed distance function (SDF) regression network to construct body surfaces from the diffused features. Thanks to our double diffused representations, our method can even synthesize novel views of unseen subjects. Experiments on various datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art in both geometric reconstruction and novel view synthesis.

It is requested to develop a small and high performance heat exchanger for small size energy equipments such as fuel cells and CO2 heat pumps, et.al... In author’s previous studies, a high pressure resistant microchannel layers stacked heat exchanger has been developed. The heat exchanger is manufactured by diffusion bond technique. It can be used under high pressure condition larger than 15 MPa. Due to the high pressure resistance, the device can be applied for high flow rate condition with boiling and condensation. The objectives of the present study are to estimate the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger and to investigate the thermal hydraulic behavior in the microchannel. The flow pattern in a glass capillary tube is observed by fabricating visualization system. As the results, it is measured that the present device attained high heat transfer quantity of approximately 7000 W on steam condensation despite the weight is only 230 g. The measurement results clarified that the device achieves very high heat transfer rate of hundreds times larger than that of the existing heat exchanger. Furthermore, visualization experiment with single glass pipe is conducted to clarify the flow condensation behavior in the microchannel. In the experiment, the microchannel of Pyrex glass is surrounded by the subcooling water. The flow patterns can visualized from the side of the microchannel. Flow patterns observations are conducted for various inlet pressure and temperatures of the subcooling water. It is observed that the continuous flow transition from annular and injection flow to slug-bubble flow in the microchannel. The reason of large heat transfer rate per unit volume is discussed as relating to narrow interval of each microchannels and small thermal resistance.

Techniques for accurate measurement of liquid flows involving volumes on the order of nanoliters and picoliters are critical for advancement of microfluidics applications. Although several techniques for measurement of microfluidic flows where a liquid is dispensed on to a target are available today, no proven techniques currently exist for measurement of microfluidic flows where a liquid is injected into a liquid media. Motivated by such a measurement need in a current project, this paper presents a novel experimental technique to measure bulk-flow of a liquid dispensed into another liquid medium with sensitivity down to picoliter range. This technique is based on the principle of titration of two liquids and measurement of hydrogen ions in the resulting solution. The critical components of the system that enable the proposed technique are: A highly sensitive hydrogen ion concentration (pH) sensor and a device to dispense very small, calibrated, volumes of liquid. Since commercially available hydrogen ion sensors are bulky for use in the proposed technique, a hydrogen ion sensor element that provides a sensing tip dimension on the order of a few microns is fabricated from a glass capillary for the current study. Dispensing of calibrated volumes of liquid is accomplished by means of a calibrated syringe for volumes in nanoliter range and a glass capillary for volumes in picoliter range, the latter serving as a dispensing port of a diameter of about 2 μm. The paper includes details of experiments where the proposed technique is first applied to precisely predict injections of 20 and 40 nL volumes and then extended to demonstrate the sensitivity of the sensor element to injections of volumes in the picoliter range. The preliminary experimental results presented generally validate the principle involved in this technique and suggest that the technique is virtually scalable to any volume flows typically encountered in the microfluidics applications.

Resumo:
To maintain measurement accuracy, stationary volume provers must be re-proved periodically. The most direct method of determining a provers volume is through a process known as water drawing where water is circulated through the prover and swept into certified measurement volumes. Since the can volumes can be directly calibrated by national metrology agencies, the traceability chain is short. However, proving with water requires that the prover be first cleaned of any hydrocarbon product that may alter the working volume of the prover and create waste products that must be handled properly. The master meter method uses the flowing product instead of water for the prover calibration and, therefore, eliminates substantial on-site waste handling issues. A master meter system consists of a portable volume prover and a turbine or positive displacement meter that is plumbed in series with the stationary prover to provide the calibration. The increased uncertainty associated with the two-step process of proving with a master meter is specifically mentioned in the API references concerning liquid meter proving; however, there has not been significant published testing to assess the differences in the methods. The objective of this project was to provide a comparison between the volume determined via the water draw method and that determined via the master eter method. A new stationary prover was used as the target device for the prover trials. Two water draw calibrations were performed and compared to the factory-provided water draw volume. The water draw results showed that with consistent measurement techniques, the results from three independent sources were within 0.02%. It is important to note that one data set had to be adjusted (based on tests) to provide this level of agreement.

This report is the second volume in a continuing project designed to explore and articulate the groundwater laws and regulations of all fifty U.S. states. This particular report presents surveys for sixteen states throughout the country. The first volume featured thirteen state surveys and can be found at: http://www.law.tamu.edu/usgroundwaterlaws. The purpose of the project is to compile and present the groundwater laws and regulations of every state in the United States that could then be used in a series of comparisons of groundwater governance principles, strategies, issues, and challenges. Professor Gabriel Eckstein at Texas A&M University School of Law and Professor Amy Hardberger at Texas Tech University School of Law developed a matrix to ascertain chief components and characteristics of the groundwater legal regime of each state. Student researchers then used the matrix to respond to a standardized set of questions about the groundwater laws and regulations of a selection of states. In the near future, additional volumes with surveys of the remaining twenty-one U.S. states will be issued.

For bridges that are experiencing deterioration, action is needed to ensure the structural performance is adequate for the demands imposed. Innovate repair and strengthening techniques can provide a cost-effective means to extend the service lives of bridges efficiently and safely. The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) systems for the repair and strengthening of concrete bridges is increasing in popularity. Recognizing the potential benefits of the widespread use of FRP, a research project was initiated to determine the most appropriate applications of FRP in Indiana and provide recommendations for the use of FRP in the state for the repair and strengthening of bridges. The details of the research are presented in two volumes. Volume 1 provides the details of a study conducted to (1) summarize the state-of-the-art methods for the application of FRP to concrete bridges, (2) identify successful examples of FRP implementation for concrete bridges in the literature and examine past applications of FRP in Indiana through case studies, and (3) better understand FRP usage and installation procedures in the Midwest and Indiana through industry surveys. Volume 2 presents two experimental programs that were conducted to develop and evaluate various repair and strengthening methodologies used to restore the performance of deteriorated concrete bridge beams. The first program investigated FRP flexural strengthening methods, with a focus on adjacent box beam bridges. The second experimental program examined potential techniques for repairing deteriorated end regions of prestressed concrete bridge girders. Externally bonded FRP and near-surface-mounted (NSM) FRP were considered in both programs.

Stockpile volumetric calculation is an important aspect in many industries, including construction, mining, and agriculture. Accurate calculation of stockpile volumes is essential for efficient inventory management, logistics planning, and quality control. Traditionally, stockpile volumetric calculation is done using ground-based survey methods, which can be time-consuming, labour-intensive, and often inaccurate. However, with the recent advancements in drone technology, it has become possible to use drones for stockpile volumetric calculation, providing a faster, safer, and more accurate solution. The duration of this project is one year, from May 1st, 2019, until April 30th, 2020, and is comprised of two primary research components: analyzing the properties and classification of limestone and conducting digital aerial mapping to calculate stockpile volumetrics. The scope of this technical report is specifically limited to the aerial mapping aspect of the project, which was carried out using drones. The project involved two phases, with drone flights taking place during each phase, spaced about six months apart. The first drone flight for data collection occurred on July 12th, 2019, while the second took place on December 15th, 2020. The project aims to utilize drone technology for stockpile volumetric calculation, providing a more efficient and cost-effective solution. The project will involve the use of advanced drone sensors and imaging technology to capture high-resolution data of the stockpile area. The data will then be processed using sophisticated software algorithms to generate accurate 3D models and volumetric calculations of the stockpile.

The overall goal of this project is to improve upon existing engine control strategies of large bore, fuel-lean natural gas engines in order to increase efficiency and maintain emissions compliance during variable fuel composition events. This will be done by simulating the effects of variable fuels in a natural gas engine, and if necessary, develop engine control methods. Phase III builds upon the work of previous phases by implementing detailed cylinder-level geometry, increasing the number of alkane species in the laminar flame speed and ignition delay solutions, and incorporating a prechamber model into the full-scale engine simulation of a Cooper-Bessemer GMWH-10C. The piston motion and port profiles were calculated from known engine geometry as a way to simulate cylinder compression and expansion as well as cylinder scavenging. The species considered were increased from binary mixtures of methane and ethane to quinary mixtures of methane, ethane, propane, butane, and pentane in order to capture the effects of heavier hydrocarbons. The laminar flame speed and ignition delay equations were developed using the same method utilized in the previous phase, but the laminar flame speed was implemented differently. Two predictive combustion simulations were developed in GT-Power. The first simplifies the combustion chambers into just one open chamber. The second includes the actual cylinder volumes: two small prechambers attached to the main chambers. Both of these models were tuned and validated against experimental data.

The US Army Corps of Engineers Regional Sediment Management (RSM) program funded research to assess the longevity and effectiveness of cedar tree revetments for sediment reduction. Between 1988 and 1997, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) constructed multiple cedar tree revetments, plantings, and a grade-control structure at an experimental stream management area on Locust Creek within the Locust Creek Conservation Area (LCCA). For the first few years, MDC also replaced missing trees as needed. MDC monitored these sites with photographs and cross sections until 2004. This study evaluated bank stability on Locust Creek from 1970 to 2019 using aerial imagery, lidar, ground surveys, and a December 2019 site visit to estimate the areal change in streambanks and the volume of sediment eroded over the years. Based on their dates of construction, the project compared preproject, with-project, and postfailure conditions at each site. The project included cedar tree revetments, other hardwood revetments, plantings, and a grade-control structure. This research found a 50% to 64% reduction in erosion for approximately 14 years. As of December 2019, all tree revetments had failed, and banks were bare and steep. The grade-control structure remained intact and continued to stabilize bed and banks immediately upstream.
