After an inquiry from the Microscopy Listserver, I went back to my 1980 copy of Scanning Electron Microscopy, volume I. Several authors had investigated the structure of thin metal films by depositing the films onto carbon-film-covered TEM grids and imaging the films at high magnification. There were several proposals for new devices that have since become standards for high-resolution coaters, but the Listserver inquiry was for a fine conducting film suitabie for high-resolution SEM from an existing sputter coater. There were several factors studied that influenced the fine structure of the films. The first was the materials sputtered: for a given set of conditions of voltage, current and time, platinum gave the finest film, 60% gold-40% palladium (Au/Pd) the next finest and pure gold the least fine.

Chitosan-stabilized gold nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous formic acid, citric, or acetic acid with and without chitosan as the stabilizer. Refluxing in methanol, addition of hydrazine or sodium borohydride, photo-irradiation were employed as the reducing agents & reduction technique of gold ions. Dispersed particles of chitosan-stabilized gold were obtained in aqueous acetic acid-methanol solution. The chitosan-stabilized gold colloids (chi-Au) were dispersed and the particle size were in range of 9-30 nm, some of which were crystalline with various shapes. Chi-Au prepared with hydrazine as the reducing agent resulted in large and aggregated particles. The finest and dispersed chi-Au particles were obtained if NaBH4 was used as the reducing agent and the diameters could be controlled within 2.2-2.3 nm. Keywords: Gold nanoparticles, chitosan, size control

Ores of the Vasilkovsky deposit include arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, gold, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, faded ore (tennantite)S, bismuthine, native bismuth, lellingite, molybdenite, cubanite, bornite, antimonite, relict minerals, magnetite, apatite and apatite chromite, sericite, chlorite, potassium feldspar, tourmaline), quartz, carbonates (siderite, ankerite, calcite), fluorite, barite. Arsenopyrite is the main ore mineral. It contains the bulk of gold, as well as impurities - copper, cobalt, nickel, bismuth, zirconium, titanium, lead, zinc, antimony, silver, molybdenum. Bismuth and its minerals are widespread, they are constantly associated with arsenopyrite, forming intergrowths with native gold, less often with chalcopyrite and faded ore. Native gold is distributed very unevenly, forms the finest precipitates ranging in size from tenths of a micron to 0.063 mm, grows together with quartz, arsenopyrite, pyrite and bismuth minerals. Rich ores were formed by combining bismuthcontaining associations with arsenopyrite. The role of gold in arsenopyrite increases with depth. Ores are of the gold-quartz-sulfide type. Quartz in ore up to 90 %, sulfides from 3 to 5 %. The content of harmful impurities (arsenic) reaches 2 % or more. Ores are refractory, require special technology for the beneficiation and extraction of gold.

AbstractThe objects of this study are various local charters (cartas de foral, in Portuguese) granted by Dom Manuel I, King of Portugal (1495–1521), which substituted for medieval ones and were intended to achieve an administrative unification. These are luxuriously illuminated manuscripts, and our study aims at obtaining a better understanding of the gilding and silvering techniques applied to the parchments, in which the forais were written, between 1500 and 1520. The combined use of microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy analyses allowed us to identify the vestigial materials used for making the parchments, including products such as salt (NaCl), lime (CaO), pumice stone (SiO2+Al2O3), and chalk (CaCO3). Chalk was employed as a whitening agent to give the parchment its final color and opacity. Shell-gold and shell-silver mixed in with animal glue or gum binding media were directly applied on type 1 and 3 forais, while very thin gold leaves (<1 µm) were applied over lead-based tempera grounds (50–180 µm thick) in type 2 forais. Silver was always employed in its finest form without a further protective layer (thus its recursive state of corrosion), while gold was used in various alloy grades.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors are of great importance in biomedical applications, for the realization of portable diabetic testing kits and continuous glucose monitoring systems. Nanostructured materials show a number of advantages in the applications of analytical electrochemistry, compared to macroscopic electrodes, such as great sensitivity and little dependence on analyte diffusion close to the electrode–solution interface. Obtaining electrodes based on nanomaterials without using expensive lithographic techniques represents a great added value. In this paper, we modeled the chronoamperometric response towards glucose determination by four electrodes consisting of nanostructured gold onto graphene paper (GP). The nanostructures were obtained by electrochemical etch, thermal and laser processes of thin gold layer. We addressed experiments obtaining different size and shape of gold nanostructures. Electrodes have been characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. We modeled the current-time response at the potential corresponding to two-electrons oxidation process of glucose by the different nanostructured gold systems. The finest nanostructures of 10–200 nm were obtained by laser dewetting of 17 nm thin and 300 °C thermal dewetting of 8 nm thin gold layers, and they show that semi-infinite linear diffusion mechanism predominates over radial diffusion. Electrochemical etching and 17 nm thin gold layer dewetted at 400 °C consist of larger gold islands up to 1 μm. In the latter case, the current-time curves can be fitted by a two-phase exponential decay function that relies on the mixed second-order formation of adsorbed glucose intermediate followed by its first-order decay to gluconolactone.

Modern technologies for recycling electronic waste (e-waste) have high economic efficiency and environmental safety requirements. Among the existing technologies, hydrometallurgy is considered to be the most promising technology for e-waste recycling. Increasing attention paid to the chlorination method is associated with the complex recycling of low-grade ores containing noble metals and the raw materials of secondary polymetallic. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for leaching metals from computer printed circuit boards (PCBs) pre-crushed in a disintegrator: The processes of chlorine production and hydrochlorination are implemented in one reactor under the action of an alternating current (AC) of industrial frequency (50 Hz). Three fine fractions of raw material powders with particle size d < 90 µm, d = 90–180 µm, and d = 180–350 µm were used as research objects and the finest fraction of the raw material (d < 90 µm) was studied in more detail. It was found that complete leaching of gold is achieved from fractions of raw materials with a particle size d = 90–180 µm and d = 180–350 µm, containing 277 ppm and 67 ppm of the gold, respectively, at an experiment duration (tex) of 2 h, a current density (i) of 0.66 A·cm−2, and a solid/liquid (S/L) ratio of 8.6 g·L−1. Under the same conditions of the electrochemical leaching process from the fraction of raw materials with a particle size of d < 90 µm and a gold content of 824 ppm, the degree of metal leaching is 80.5%. At the same time, with an increase in particle size in the raw material fractions from d < 90 µm to d = 180–350 µm and a copper content in the raw material from 1.40% to 6.13%, an increase in the degree of its leaching from 81.6% to 95.2%, respectively, is observed. In the framework of the preliminary study presented in this work, for the finest raw material fraction with d < 90 μm the highest gold leaching degree (86.3%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex= 4 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.88 A·cm–2, S/L ratio—8.6 g·L–1 and the highest copper leaching degree (94.2%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex = 2 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.64 A·cm–2, and S/L ratio—2.9 g·L–1.

The proposed effort is a research analysis of the effect of various macroeconomic determinants such as price of Oil, Gold price and rate of Exchange (USD to INR) over Indian stock exchange market (we took NSE catalog as a reference for Indian share market). In proposed study, we took recurrent data for time period of 14 years i.e. 2008 to 2022. In proposed work, first of all we established a correlation between various macroeconomic determinants (price of Gold, Oil price and US dollar exchange rate) with NSEI (National Stock Exchange of India). Once correlation is found between these entities, we formulated regression equations to forecast opening value of NSEI centered on historical values of macroeconomic determinants. Here we devised seven different models and concluded the best models amongst them. Then we tested the given results from regression analysis by providing a test data and comparing the results of actual value of NSEI with the predicted value. Finally, we proposed finest prototype to forecast the National Stock Exchange index.

The Bedford Hours (British Library MS Additional 18850) has been called one of “the very finest examples of French art of the earlier half of the fifteenth century….” Its lavish use of gold and bright colors, its beautifully conceived calendar pages and large miniatures, its connection with the marriage of John of Lancaster, the duke of Bedford, to Anne of Burgundy, and its fascinating history as a manuscript have received much attention. Scholars, however, have virtually ignored the almost 1,250 marginal illustrations that decorate the manuscript's 289 folios. These tiny pictures are generally woven into the ivy-leaf border, painted within roundels of approximately one inch in diameter. Thematically related, they are usually placed two to a folio side, one within the left or right border, and one within the lower border. The roundels, furthermore, are accompanied by one-line Old French texts. These are always placed together below the lower border and are arranged so that the first text, written in blue, identifies the roundel within the side border, whereas the second text, written in gold, explains the roundel painted within the lower border.

Background: Antibiotic resistance is a life threating problem and the need for an alternative is increasing worldwide. Objective of this study is: Detecting the combination effect of AuNps with Amoxicillin/clavulanate (AMC) antibiotic against antibiotic resistant clinical bacterial isolates. Materials and methods: Gold nanoparticles were biosynthesized using food origin Citrobacter freundii isolate (C2) which was isolated from chicken meat samples by pour plate method and identified using cultural characteristics, biochemical tests and the identification to the species level was completed by Vitek-2 system and this identification was confirmed by sequencing of the 16 s r RNA. The biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles was optimized in order to achieve the finest AuNps with a diameter range (30-60) nm. and the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles were characterized by visual observation and then characterized using various characterization techniques: Uv-vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis and scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The combination effect of AuNps with AMC antibiotic was detected against clinical bacterial isolates. Results: The results revealed the biosynthesized AuNPs were roughly spherical and poly-dispersed, and they were highly effective with concentration (62.5 µg/ml) that inhibit the bacterial growth, MIC values of AMC antibiotic against clinical isolates were determined as 500 µg/ml, while the combination of gold nanoparticles and AMC had wide spectrum of antibacterial activity against different isolates of the bacteria that used in this study. Conclusion: There was a significant synergistic effect between the biosynthesized gold nanoparticles when used in combination with antibiotic where the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the combination (AuNps/AMC) were less than its concentration when each of them (AuNps) or (AMC) used separately.

Abstract The Hebrew word מִכְתָּם creates a problem because the meaning is controversy. The Hebrew lexicon, BDB (1906) and TWOT lexicon (2003), confirm this difficulty, saying, “the meaning of this word is unknown.” PONS Kompaktwörterbuch Althebräisch (2015) records that this word is untranslated, while the other sources translate as song, prayer, or epigram. Allen P. Ross (2012:48), a Hebrew scholar, indicates that its meaning is disputed. Ibn Ezra (Strickman 2009:112) interprets that this word refers to a very precious Psalm. He compares with ketem paz or the finest gold in Song of Songs 5:11 because both words are derived from the same root. This perplexity also occurs in ancient texts as they differ in their translations. This article, therefore, attempts to study and solve this dilemmatic word in ancient texts with textual criticism of its methodology. This study argues that the word מִכְתָּם is not only different in translation, but also the concept in ancient texts.

In May 1939, the accomplished Palaeolithic archaeologist, Dorothy Garrod, was elected Cambridge's Professor of Archaeology — the first woman to hold a Chair at either Cambridge or Oxford. Garrod was well qualified for the position in several ways. Trained by R.R. Marett at Oxford and the Abbé Henri Breuil in France, she was renowned for her excavations in Gibraltar, Palestine, Southern Kurdistan and Bulgaria. By 1939, Garrod was one of Britain's finest archaeologists. She had discovered the wellpreserved skull fragments of ‘Abel’, a Neanderthal child, in Gibraltar, identified the Natufianculture while excavating Shukbah near Jerusalem, directed the large, long-term excavations at Mt Carmel, established the Palaeolithic succession for that crucial region and then travelled, in 1938, to explore the important Palaeolithic cave of Bacho Kiro in Bulgaria. Published reports of her excavations had appeared promptly and were very favourably reviewed. The prehistorian, Grahame Clark, who was to succeed her to the Disney Chair in 1952, described Garrod's The Stone Age of Mount Carmel (1937) as ‘pure gold’ (Clark 1937: 488).

This research article proposes and numerically investigates a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for the detecting refractive index (RI) of unknown analytes. The plasmonic material (gold) layer is placed outside of the PCF by removing two air holes from the main structure, and a D-shaped PCF-SPR sensor is formed. The purpose of using a plasmonic material (gold) layer in a PCF structure is to introduce an SPR phenomenon. The structure of the PCF is likely enclosed by the analyte to be detected, and an external sensing system is used to measure changes in the SPR signal. Moreover, a perfectly matched layer (PML) is also placed outside of the PCF to absorb unwanted light signals towards the surface. The numerical investigation of all guiding properties of the PCF-SPR sensor is completed using a fully vectorial-based finite element method (FEM) to achieve the finest sensing performance. The design of the PCF-SPR sensor is completed using COMSOL Multiphysics software, version 1.4.50. According to the simulation results, the proposed PCF-SPR sensor has a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 9000 nm/RIU, an amplitude sensitivity of 3746 RIU−1, a sensor resolution of 1 × 10−5 RIU, and a figure of merit (FOM) of 900 RIU−1 in the x-polarized direction light signal. The miniaturized structure and high sensitivity of the proposed PCF-SPR sensor make it a promising candidate for detecting RI of analytes ranging from 1.28 to 1.42.

This paper proposes to further design the sub-optimal two-dimensional (2D) interleavers while taking the best interleaver from the previous work into consideration. The newly proposed interleavers are 2D Golden interleavers (Gold), uniformly distributed interleavers (Uniform) and Block and bit wise interleavers (Block & bit). The performances of these interleavers were compared and evaluated by comparing the average (Mean) and standard deviation (SD) of the bit error rate (BER) under the environments with different amounts of burst errors. Moreover, the average computation time (Time) of the interleaver and average distance between adjacent bits after deinterleaving (Dist) were also utilized as the criteria for performance evaluation. Time could also be used to analyze the computational complexity of the interleavers where Time of the proposed 2D interleaver was compared with Time of original 1D block interleaver to test the suitability for hardware accomplishment. The transmission scheme for 2D system is based on previously proposed 2D linear block code and 2D syndrome decoder. The performances of these 2D interleavers were compared with traditional one-dimensional (1D) interleavers with comparably the same complexity. The buffer sizes for 2D channel that were considered in this paper are 256*256, 128*128, 64*64, 32*32 and 16*16 which is equivalent to 65536, 16384, 4096, 1024 and 256 buffer sizes for 1D respectively as they have the same number of elements. Simulation results suggest that 2D interleavers have relatively lower computation time than their 1D equivalent interleavers and reducing the buffer size can dramatically increase the BER. The optimal buffer sizes for 2D interleavers are 256*256 and 128*128. For low error rate error, the best interleaver would be Uniform and Gold for 256*256 and 128*128 buffer size respectively. For the other environment, the finest ones are Block&bit and Uniform for 256*256 and 128*128 buffer size respectively. Comparison results between the computation time of the proposed 2D interleavers and 1D block interleaver also indicate that 2D interleavers are suitable for hardware implementation since they have less computational complexity.

The great revival and reconquests undertaken by Andronikos III Palaeologus were shattered upon his death. Erstwhile allies and family turned on each other in the wake of the premature death of the emperor, with deadly intrigue undertaken for who should control the regency of young John V, heir of the late Basileus. Campaigns in the previous decade that were successfully restoring northern Greece and the Balkans into Byzantine hands were at once abandoned when private dispute spilled over into civil war. On the one side stood the foreign mother of the young emperor, Anna of Savoy. On the other stood John Cantacuzene, best friend and right-hand man of John V’s father. At stake was a squabbling patchwork of semi-independent statelets with various degrees of allegiance to the empire. During a period when the empire could ill afford it, precious resources were squandered on in-fighting. When John Cantacuzene found himself the brief winner of the civil war before his subsequent deposition, he no longer dined on dishes of silver and gold but pewter. The crown jewels of the empire had been pawned away to Venice and the riches of the Romans wasted away on fighting that only hurt the Romans themselves. Thus, riding out from his palace in the finest bejeweled splendor the heirlooms of late antiquity had to offer, the emperor returned home wearing a glass crown. From an empire on the rebound in 1341, Byzantium was shattered and near fatally weakened in 1353.

Jh. aufbewahrt. Shell silk – golden robes from the sea Abstract: A particularly fine and rare fiber belongs to the animal raw materials that man used to make clothes, before the invention of synthetic fibers. It is byssus- or shell silk. This is the adhesive threads of the noble pen shell Pinna nobilis Linnaeus, 1758 from the Mediterranean Sea, which can grow up to 20 cm long in adult specimens. Even in ancient times, these fibers were used to make precious shiny gold garments with the finest of painstaking craftsmanship. After a heyday during the Roman Empire, it was processed in the following centuries until the 20th century to small items such as gloves, stockings or embroidery. The centers of shell silk processing were in the Gulf of Taranto and in Sardinia. Due to overfishing, the stocks almost became extinct and were placed under protection in 1992. Today, the processing of mussel silk is only carried out to preserve an old craft. Two pairs of gloves made of mussel silk from the 2nd half of the 18th century are kept in the Rostock Zoological Collection.

In the present study, the biosorptive potential of Cyprinus carpio scales for the removal of Fe, Mn, and Zn ions from real acidic mine drainage (AMD) generated at the Rosia Montana gold mine (Romania) was explored for the first time. The collected AMD solution is very acidic, and the concentrations of Fe, Mn, and Zn ions exceed more than 34 to 56 times the disposal standards imposed by legislation. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of the sorbent dosage, sorbent particle size, pH, and contact time on the adsorption performance of the fish scales. Before and after the adsorption process, the biosorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). In the investigated experimental conditions, about 100%, 87.1%, and 100% of Fe, Mn, and Zn ions were removed from the AMD after 240 min of contact with the finest-grained Cyprinus carpio scale samples using a solid:liquid ratio of 20:1 (g:L). The adsorption data were analyzed using the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, intraparticle diffusion rate, and Elovich equations. The adsorption process was found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacities of the fish scales were about 2.46 mg/g for Mn and 0.85 mg/g for Zn ions, respectively. Aside from their significant efficiency in the removal of metals from AMD, Cyprinus carpio scales also have the potential to neutralize the acidic wastewater. Thus, the removal process of metal ions from AMD is ruled by a complex mechanism, including adsorption and iron precipitation. The recycled scales are still able to remove the metal ions from AMD with a better performance during the first regeneration cycle. Based on the obtained results, it might be assessed that the low-cost biowaste of Cyprinus carpio scales have great potential and could be effectively used for the remediation of real acidic mine drainage from a sustainable perspective.

Introduction: In the fall of 1993, I arrived at King Circle station, a young orthopaedic graduate from the strife-ridden town of Jammu. Bombay, as it was known then, offered me the opportunity to work in one of the finest trauma centers in the country, a dream come true for someone displaced by the violent turmoil in Kashmir. Early Years and Professional Marvel (1993-2001): Working alongside esteemed colleagues such as NS Laud, VT Ingalhalikar, Joy Patankar, Ajay Puri, Ram Chaddha, and Arvind Goregaonkar felt like wielding a magic wand that turned everything to gold. Joining Sion Hospital, a professional marvel, was a significant leap for me. It was during this time that my friend, Ajay Puri, introduced me to the Bombay Orthopaedic Society (BOS), marking the beginning of a profound association. Executive Committee Member (2001-2003): Becoming an executive committee member in 2001 opened doors within BOS’s inner circles. The society, free from bias and politics, focused on nurturing the orthopaedic fraternity. Its unique selling point was enhancing orthopaedic surgery and promoting holistic development. Organising WIROC2003: The pinnacle of my involvement came when I organized WIROC2003, despite the personal adversity of losing my father. This flagship conference became a milestone, setting new standards in organization and academic excellence. From revolutionary conference organizing paradigms to creating academic events, BOS provided the freedom to unleash unrestrained creativity. Secretaryship and Refining Programs (2016-2018): Elected as Secretary in 2016, my role was to refine existing programs and introduce fresh academic activities, maintaining BOS’s academic dominance. Initiatives such as PG classes, the launch of the Journal of Clinical Orthopaedics, and more showcased a burning desire to contribute to the society. Presidency and Innovations (2023)): Now, as the President, I’ve introduced new programs like “Rising Star” and “Student of the Year” to recognize and inspire young talents. Tying it all together is WIROC 2023, with the theme “Brevis Longus Magnus,” aiming to solidify its status as the apex of orthopaedic education. Future Aspirations and Legacy: After relinquishing my office, I envision BOS exploring areas like orthopaedic advocacy, motivating the younger generation, and fostering empathy for patients. BOS, with its unbiased education and commitment to excellence, stands as a beacon for orthopaedic education and treatment. Conclusion: This two-decade journey from a reluctant newcomer to the President’s seat reflects the unique ethos of BOS. With a legacy of unwavering guidance from figures like LN Vora and Anand Thakur NS Laud, D D Tanna and many more who always stood up for BOS and it’s ethos. I shall leave with the confidence that BOS will continue to flourish, and maintain its place in exploring new frontiers in orthopaedic education and advocacy.

At the present stage of development of the mineral resource base of precious metals, the wider involvement of refractory ores and technogenic products in the mineral processing is playing a very important role. It is due to these types of mineral resources the main Russian and foreign companies plan to get the increase in the production of gold and other precious metals. Refractory ores are characterized by low content and uneven distribution of valuable components, emulsion dissemination of gold, complex material composition, flotation active silicate and carbonaceous rock components. The main technologies for their processing include combined schemes that provide intensive preliminary preparation of ore, fine and ultrafine grinding. Creation of effective reagents for flotation of fine classes of noble metals, selective depression of gold-free sulfides, like pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, and rock minerals is one of the recognized innovative solutions for intensifying the enrichment process of this type of raw material. The studies performed at IPKON RAS in the framework of the scientific school of Academician V.A. Chanturiya helped to develop and substantiate the novel selective reagents-collectors of dithiocarbamate type (DEDTCm, OPDTC, DBDTC, MDTC) and herbal modifiers that possess complexing properties in relation to noble metals and provide an increase in the recovery of valuable components of gold by 5-7%. A set of analytical methods - scanning electron (LEO 1420VP, Carl Zeiss) and laser microscopy (KEYNCE VK-9700, Shimadzu), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ARL ADVANT’X), ICP –MS (Agilent 725 ICP-OES, Agilent Technologies), X-ray diffractometry (DRON-2.0, XRD 7000, Shimadzu), potentiometry, titrimetric analysis, methods of mathematical statistics helped to study the adsorption layer of the reagents on natural minerals and model sulfides with micro- and nanosized gold. Using an original technique for quantitative assessment of the reagent coating by image analysis (SLM), the surface area of the mineral occupied by the reagent was calculated. A method for selective flotation of gold-containing sulfides using OPDTC and oak bark extract has been developed and tested in the separation of the collective gold-arsenic concentrate of the Olympiada deposit. It showed the possibility of obtaining a gold-pyrite concentrate with an arsenic content of less than 2%. The prospect of using plant modifiers for gold recovery during flotation of complex ores has been substantiated.

Gold mining without a permit is one of the activities that results in a decrease in environmental quality, because gold mining activities use mercury to separate gold ore from rocks until the refining process. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the implementation of law enforcement against gold mining without a permit and controlling the environmental impact of gold mining without a permit in Sintang District, Sintang Regency. The type of research is sociological juridical. Data collection by interview and observation was then analyzed by qualitative methods. Unlicensed gold mining is caused by economic factors, education and the community feels they have the right to manage natural resources. Gold mining law enforcement without a permit applies criminal law with the imposition of fines and is still not optimal due to several constraints on the location of miners moving around, the absence of regional regulations related to PETI and community resistance. The government's efforts to control environmental impacts on water pollution from PETI activities are monitoring water quality conditions on a regular basis.

Coke-based carbon sorbent (CBCS) was produced using special coke fines with the following characteristics: ash, 4.5%; iodine adsorption capacity, 52%; specific surface area, 600 m2 g−1; and total pore volume, 0.4 cm3 g−1. Gold adsorption from real production cyanide solutions in batch and column laboratory experiments was studied. The optimum adsorbent/solution ratio was 0.2 g/20 cm3. Sorption equilibrium occurred after 60 min of phase-time contact. The CBCS maximum adsorption capacity for gold was found to be 1.2 mg g−1. Both the Langmiur and Freundlich isotherm models confirmed that gold adsorption by CBCS proceeds favorably, but the Freundlich isotherm best describes the adsorption equilibrium. The CBCS dynamic exchange capacity (100 g t−1) and full dynamic exchange capacity (4600 g t−1) for gold were determined in column tests. It was revealed using SEM that adsorbate was retained in sorbent pores. The possibility of completely eluting gold from CBCS was demonstrated. A CBCS pilot test to recover gold from 200 dm3 of the cyanide solution containing (mg dm−3) 2.6 Au, 0.42 Ag, and 490 Cu was carried out. The total amount of noble metals (Au + Ag) adsorbed was 99.99% and gold ions was 94%. The CBCS maximum adsorption capacity for gold reached 2900 g t−1.

Failure of the Merriespruit gold tailings dam in 1994 in South Africa was unusual in that never before had a gold tailings dam in South Africa failed in such a catastrophic fashion. Conventional thinking was that gold tailings would always exhibit dilative characteristics upon loading, primarily because of the method of deposition which allows significant consolidation to occur due to sun-drying. This paper demonstrates that the concept of a steady state line, which separates dilative from contractive behaviour upon undrained loading, is applicable to Merriespruit tailings. Four particle-size distributions of Merriespruit tailings were tested to determine the influence of the percent finer than 75 µm on the position of the steady state line. The tailings with the greater percentage of fines gave a steady state line that plotted above all the others, which translated to the requirement that a greater relative density was necessary to produce noncontractive behaviour than for the low-fines tailings samples. The difficulty of defining a unique steady state line for a particular tailings, due to errors in measurement of initial sizes, is illustrated and it is recommended that error bands be assigned to any steady state line. In a companion paper, evidence from the post-failure investigation is combined with the test results in this paper to explore the likelihood of static liquefaction as the cause of the Merriespruit flow failure.Key words: static liquefaction, tailings, steady state, flow failure.

The nature of the distribution of gold by size classes is established, which can significantly reduce the volume of processed rock mass. Theoretical substantiation of acceleration of natural segregation with application of low-frequency sound influence is given. The segregation-diffusion concentration of gold is proposed, which allows in the future to create an energy-efficient technology of recovery from man-made waste and apply it to the processing of gold deposits still in the depths.

AbstractThe seventh-century vernacular laws from the kingdoms of Kent and Wessex specify fines or compensation payments using units of account that have given us familiar terms in the numismatics of this period:scillingas(shillings),sceattasandpæningas(pennies). In light of the use of cognate words in Gothic and Old High German, and the comparative values given in the Old English law-codes themselves and in the fifth-century Theodosian Code, it is suggested that these represent a regular and durable bimetallic system correlating values in gold and silver. This proposition is examined further against the evidence of weighing-sets from sixth- and early seventh-century Anglo-Saxon graves, and it is argued that the results give greater and more precise meaning to the use of gold and silver in Early Anglo-Saxon artefacts, such as the great gold buckle from Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk.

Drainage is important to golf and athletic facilities trying to avoid lost play time. Native soil containing clay is sometimes incorporated into sand profiles with the intent to increase water and nutrient holding capacities. However, mixes high in silt and/or clay often have drainage problems. Research was conducted on soil physical properties from incremental 10% v/v additions of silt and clay (fines) to a U.S. Golf Association (USGA)-specification sand. Soils were evaluated based on volumetric water retention from 0 to 50 cm matric potential, saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat), porosity, and bulk density. The soil water characteristic (SWC) for 100:0 (sand:fines) had lower volumetric water content (θv) throughout the profile than any other mixture. Addition of 10% fines increased θv to more than 0.17 cm3·cm–3 throughout the 0- to 50-cm matric potential range, whereas 20% fines increased θv to more than 0.26 cm3·cm–3. The 70:30 mixture had greater θv throughout the profile than mixtures containing more than 70% sand. Mixtures with less than 70% sand produced similar SWCs. Increasing sand content increased bulk density, which altered saturated volumetric water content. Ksat was reduced from more than 265 cm·h–1 in 100:0 mixtures to 43 cm·h–1 for 90:10 mixtures, and to less than 5 cm·h–1 with ≥20% fines. The addition of ≥20% by volume of fines to a USGA sand increased water content in the soil to the point it was rendered unacceptable for trafficked turf sites. This research illustrates the influence fine particles, even in small amounts, can have on a USGA sand, and why they should not be added without prior evaluation.

Resumo:
Abstract BACKGROUND Early detection of spinal metastases is important to facilitate early management and delay vertebral fracture or metastatic cord compression. The gold standard investigation to detect spinal metastasis is MRI, but it cannot quantify the metastasis and prognosis is poor due to its late presentation. Fine Structural Analysis (FineSA) is a custom software added to MRI using a non-radiating proprietary data acquisition technique. It analyses data at a resolution 10 times higher than MRI to quantify the trabecular microstructure which has the potential to enable early detection and management of vertebral fracture or metastatic cord compression. MATERIAL AND METHODS 18 patients with known, symptomatic spinal metastases from Swansea Bay University Health Board and 11 age and sex-matched control subjects were recruited to have a FineSA MRI Spine. FineSA analysed and produced a structural spectrum of a defined area from the metastatic lesion. Statistical comparisons were made with the control data by extracting several metrics from the spectra, which were represented as an index score relative to a normal range. RESULTS Preliminary results using One Way ANOVA show a highly significant difference in trabecular microstructure between patients with spinal metastases and the age and sex-matched control patients, where p= 3.99e-11. CONCLUSION Preliminary results show that there is a highly significant difference between metastatic and control bone structure. Follow-up of the patients after one year will look at if fracture has occurred and whether there is a difference in the FineSA index score between the two groups. FineSA has the potential to be used to identify which metastatic lesions are most likely to be symptomatic and fracture, so that targeted radiotherapy can be done before symptoms are either present or intrusive.
