After an inquiry from the Microscopy Listserver, I went back to my 1980 copy of Scanning Electron Microscopy, volume I. Several authors had investigated the structure of thin metal films by depositing the films onto carbon-film-covered TEM grids and imaging the films at high magnification. There were several proposals for new devices that have since become standards for high-resolution coaters, but the Listserver inquiry was for a fine conducting film suitabie for high-resolution SEM from an existing sputter coater.There were several factors studied that influenced the fine structure of the films. The first was the materials sputtered: for a given set of conditions of voltage, current and time, platinum gave the finest film, 60% gold-40% palladium (Au/Pd) the next finest and pure gold the least fine.

Chitosan-stabilized gold nanoparticles were synthesized in aqueous formic acid, citric, or acetic acid with and without chitosan as the stabilizer. Refluxing in methanol, addition of hydrazine or sodium borohydride, photo-irradiation were employed as the reducing agents & reduction technique of gold ions. Dispersed particles of chitosan-stabilized gold were obtained in aqueous acetic acid-methanol solution. The chitosan-stabilized gold colloids (chi-Au) were dispersed and the particle size were in range of 9-30 nm, some of which were crystalline with various shapes. Chi-Au prepared with hydrazine as the reducing agent resulted in large and aggregated particles. The finest and dispersed chi-Au particles were obtained if NaBH4 was used as the reducing agent and the diameters could be controlled within 2.2-2.3 nm. Ores of the Vasilkovsky deposit include arsenopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, gold, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, faded ore (tennantite)S, bismuthine, native bismuth, lellingite, molybdenite, cubanite, bornite, antimonite, relict minerals, magnetite, apatite and apatite chromite, sericite, chlorite, potassium feldspar, tourmaline), quartz, carbonates (siderite, ankerite, calcite), fluorite, barite. Arsenopyrite is the main ore mineral. It contains the bulk of gold, as well as impurities - copper, cobalt, nickel, bismuth, zirconium, titanium, lead, zinc, antimony, silver, molybdenum. Bismuth and its minerals are widespread, they are constantly associated with arsenopyrite, forming intergrowths with native gold, less often with chalcopyrite and faded ore. Native gold is distributed very unevenly, forms the finest precipitates ranging in size from tenths of a micron to 0.063 mm, grows together with quartz, arsenopyrite, pyrite and bismuth minerals. Rich ores were formed by combining bismuthcontaining associations with arsenopyrite. The role of gold in arsenopyrite increases with depth. Ores are of the gold-quartz-sulfide type. Quartz in ore up to 90 %, sulfides from 3 to 5 %. The content of harmful impurities (arsenic) reaches 2 % or more. Ores are refractory, require special technology for the beneficiation and extraction of gold.

AbstractThe objects of this study are various local charters (cartas de foral, in Portuguese) granted by Dom Manuel I, King of Portugal (1495–1521), which substituted for medieval ones and were intended to achieve an administrative unification. These are luxuriously illuminated manuscripts, and our study aims at obtaining a better understanding of the gilding and silvering techniques applied to the parchments, in which the forais were written, between 1500 and 1520. The combined use of microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy analyses allowed us to identify the vestigial materials used for making the parchments, including products such as salt (NaCl), lime (CaO), pumice stone (SiO2+Al2O3), and chalk (CaCO3). Chalk was employed as a whitening agent to give the parchment its final color and opacity. Shell-gold and shell-silver mixed in with animal glue or gum binding media were directly applied on type 1 and 3 forais, while very thin gold leaves (<1 µm) were applied over lead-based tempera grounds (50–180 µm thick) in type 2 forais. Silver was always employed in its finest form without a further protective layer (thus its recursive state of corrosion), while gold was used in various alloy grades.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors are of great importance in biomedical applications, for the realization of portable diabetic testing kits and continuous glucose monitoring systems. Nanostructured materials show a number of advantages in the applications of analytical electrochemistry, compared to macroscopic electrodes, such as great sensitivity and little dependence on analyte diffusion close to the electrode–solution interface. Obtaining electrodes based on nanomaterials without using expensive lithographic techniques represents a great added value. In this paper, we modeled the chronoamperometric response towards glucose determination by four electrodes consisting of nanostructured gold onto graphene paper (GP). The nanostructures were obtained by electrochemical etch, thermal and laser processes of thin gold layer. We addressed experiments obtaining different size and shape of gold nanostructures. Electrodes have been characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. We modeled the current-time response at the potential corresponding to two-electrons oxidation process of glucose by the different nanostructured gold systems. The finest nanostructures of 10–200 nm were obtained by laser dewetting of 17 nm thin and 300 °C thermal dewetting of 8 nm thin gold layers, and they show that semi-infinite linear diffusion mechanism predominates over radial diffusion. Electrochemical etching and 17 nm thin gold layer dewetted at 400 °C consist of larger gold islands up to 1 μm. In the latter case, the current-time curves can be fitted by a two-phase exponential decay function that relies on the mixed second-order formation of adsorbed glucose intermediate followed by its first-order decay to gluconolactone.

Modern technologies for recycling electronic waste (e-waste) have high economic efficiency and environmental safety requirements. Among the existing technologies, hydrometallurgy is considered to be the most promising technology for e-waste recycling. Increasing attention paid to the chlorination method is associated with the complex recycling of low-grade ores containing noble metals and the raw materials of secondary polymetallic. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for leaching metals from computer printed circuit boards (PCBs) pre-crushed in a disintegrator: The processes of chlorine production and hydrochlorination are implemented in one reactor under the action of an alternating current (AC) of industrial frequency (50 Hz). Three fine fractions of raw material powders with particle size d < 90 µm, d = 90–180 µm, and d = 180–350 µm were used as research objects and the finest fraction of the raw material (d < 90 µm) was studied in more detail. It was found that complete leaching of gold is achieved from fractions of raw materials with a particle size d = 90–180 µm and d = 180–350 µm, containing 277 ppm and 67 ppm of the gold, respectively, at an experiment duration (tex) of 2 h, a current density (i) of 0.66 A·cm−2, and a solid/liquid (S/L) ratio of 8.6 g·L−1. Under the same conditions of the electrochemical leaching process from the fraction of raw materials with a particle size of d < 90 µm and a gold content of 824 ppm, the degree of metal leaching is 80.5%. At the same time, with an increase in particle size in the raw material fractions from d < 90 µm to d = 180–350 µm and a copper content in the raw material from 1.40% to 6.13%, an increase in the degree of its leaching from 81.6% to 95.2%, respectively, is observed. In the framework of the preliminary study presented in this work, for the finest raw material fraction with d < 90 μm the highest gold leaching degree (86.3%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex= 4 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.88 A·cm–2, S/L ratio—8.6 g·L–1 and the highest copper leaching degree (94.2%) was achieved under the following experimental conditions: tex = 2 h, CHCl = 6 M, i = 0.64 A·cm–2, and S/L ratio—2.9 g·L–1.

The proposed effort is a research analysis of the effect of various macroeconomic determinants such as price of Oil, Gold price and rate of Exchange (USD to INR) over Indian stock exchange market (we took NSE catalog as a reference for Indian share market). In proposed study, we took recurrent data for time period of 14 years i.e. 2008 to 2022. In proposed work, first of all we established a correlation between various macroeconomic determinants (price of Gold, Oil price and US dollar exchange rate) with NSEI (National Stock Exchange of India). Once correlation is found between these entities, we formulated regression equations to forecast opening value of NSEI centered on historical values of macroeconomic determinants. Here we devised seven different models and concluded the best models amongst them. Then we tested the given results from regression analysis by providing a test data and comparing the results of actual value of NSEI with the predicted value. Finally, we proposed finest prototype to forecast the National Stock Exchange index.

The Bedford Hours (British Library MS Additional 18850) has been called one of “the very finest examples of French art of the earlier half of the fifteenth century….” Its lavish use of gold and bright colors, its beautifully conceived calendar pages and large miniatures, its connection with the marriage of John of Lancaster, the duke of Bedford, to Anne of Burgundy, and its fascinating history as a manuscript have received much attention. Scholars, however, have virtually ignored the almost 1,250 marginal illustrations that decorate the manuscript's 289 folios. These tiny pictures are generally woven into the ivy-leaf border, painted within roundels of approximately one inch in diameter. Thematically related, they are usually placed two to a folio side, one within the left or right border, and one within the lower border. The roundels, furthermore, are accompanied by one-line Old French texts. These are always placed together below the lower border and are arranged so that the first text, written in blue, identifies the roundel within the side border, whereas the second text, written in gold, explains the roundel painted within the lower border.

De rättsliga regler som skyddar företagsspecifik information finns i lagen (1990:409) om skydd för företagshemligheter. Lagen innehåller en definition av begreppet företagshemlighet. Definitionen uppställer ett antal rekvisit som samtliga måste vara uppfyllda för att en information ska utgöra en företagshemlighet och därmed skyddas av lagen. En företagshemlighet omfattas av tystnadsplikt. Ett olovligt anskaffande, utnyttjande eller röjande av en företagshemlighet är i lagens mening ett angrepp på företagshemlighet som i vissa fall kan utlösa både straff- och skadeståndsansvar. I de allra flesta fall leder dock angrepp på företagshemligheter endast till skadeståndsansvar. Ansvarssubjekt kan enligt lagen vara affärspartners, arbetstagare, i vissa fall även f.d. arbetstagare samt andra som kommer i kontakt med en näringsidkares företagshemligheter. Den tystnadsplikt som åligger dessa kan vara avtalad eller underförstådd. Arbetstagares tystnadsplikt bygger ofta på den arbetsrättsliga lojalitetsplikten. I ett fåtal fall är tystnadsplikten reglerad i FHL. De gärningar som är kriminaliserade i lagen är företagsspioneri och olovlig befattning med företagshemlighet. I ett fåtal fall kan andra straffrättsliga regler bli aktuella. Straffansvar inträder oavsett om skada har uppkommit. Övrigt missbruk av företagshemligheter är skadeståndsgrundande i den mån skada har uppkommit.

Lagens skadeståndsregler utgör specialbestämmelser som ska tillämpas före bestämmelser i SkL och allmänna kontraktsrättsliga regler som endast har getts en kompletterande funktion. Ett undantag från denna principiella utgångspunkt är MBLs företräde framför FHL. Skadeståndsbestämmelserna i FHL har utformats efter förebild från dels immaterialrätten, dels arbetsrätten, särskilt MBL. Skadestånd enligt FHL kan således utgå både i form av ekonomiskt och allmänt skadestånd. Införandet av allmänt skadestånd har i förarbetena motiverats med de bevissvårigheter som kan uppstå när en näringsidkare ska styrka den ekonomiska skada som denne lidit. Tanken är att skadeståndet ska vara en verkligt effektiv sanktion. Genom att domstolarna utnyttjar möjligheten att utdöma allmänt skadestånd ska enligt förarbetena skadeståndet kunna sättas på en högre nivå än vad som skulle ha blivit fallet om endast ett ekonomiskt skadestånd kunnat dömas ut.

En studie av rättspraxis på området visar att domstolarna inte lever upp till de intentioner som lagstiftaren gett uttryck för i förarbetena. Genom att analysera ett flertal av de rättsfall som finns på området har jag kommit fram till att detta beror på avsaknaden av en uttrycklig minimiregel för bestämmandet av det ekonomiska skadeståndet. Förarbetena kan, enligt min mening, tolkas som att en sådan minimiregel varit lagstiftarens avsikt men att detta inte kommit att uttryckas tydligt. Min uppfattning är att denna brist på tydlig vägledning påverkar domstolarnas praxis på så sätt att utdömda skadestånd i vissa fall blir omotiverat låga. Problematiken är enligt min mening generell men den är särskilt påtaglig i de fall där en angripen näringsidkare misslyckas med att styrka att angrepp lett till ekonomisk skada. I de fallen har domstolarna endast dömt ut allmänt skadestånd. Bristen på klara hållpunkter för vad ett allmänt skadestånd är ersättning för och framför allt vilka belopp som kan utdömas skapar en rättsosäkerhet som borde vara lätt att åtgärda. Att införa en minimiregel efter mönster från immaterialrätten är mitt förslag på lämplig åtgärd inte minst med tanke på att detta rättsområde ligger närmast skyddet för företagshemligheter.

Ao longo do tempo, o uso exagerado de corantes de cabelo, em forma geral, tem apresentado um grande crescimento, e dessa forma os compostos utilizados nessas formulações comerciais tem apresentado interesse, devido a que alguns deles possuem propriedades mutagênicas e carcinogênicas. Entre os corantes que se estudam encontra-se à 2-nitro-p-fenilenodiamina e a 4-nitro-o-fenilenodiamina, que são os utilizados nas formulações comerciais de corantes semipermanentes. O presente trabalho explora metodologias para a construção de sensores que apresentem sensibilidade e seletividade suficientes para a detecção de analitos utilizados na indústria cosmética de tintura para cabelo. O sensor para o corante 2-nitro-p-fenilenodiamina, que apresentou resultados mais promissores, foi construído usando uma superfície de ouro nano-estruturado, modificado com monocamadas de mercaptopropanossulfonato de sódio (MPS), para obter uma superfície com carga negativa, seguido das etapas de formação das multicamadas de quitosana, dodecil sulfonato de sódio (SDS) e ftalocianina de níquel (TsNiPc) obtidos pela técnica layer-by-layer (LBL) em forma alternada. A partir da otimização dos parâmetros, como pH (3,5), número de multicamadas (n = 10) e eletrólito suporte (tampão Britton-Robinson 0,1 mol L-1) foram escolhidas condições para obter o melhor desempenho do sensor. A resposta do sensor foi avaliada em batelada por voltametria de onda quadrada, e em fluxo por amperometria, obtendo limites de detecção de 1,2 ?mol L-1 e 1,3 ?mol L-1, respectivamente. Na aplicação do sensor, o valor de recuperação do corante em água de torneira propositalmente contaminada foi de 97%, e o valor encontrado em uma amostra comercial mostrou um erro de 4,5% em relação ao valor de referência.
Due to the indiscriminate use of hair dyes generally has shown a tremendous growth for a long time. The compounds used in their formulations have shown commercial interest, because some of these hair dyes have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Among these dyes that we studied are the 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine and 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine, which are used in commercial formulations as semi-permanent hair dye. The present work explores methods to build sensors that have sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of analytes used in the cosmetic industry for hair dyes. The sensor for the 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine, shows more promising results, which was constructed using a nanostructured gold surface modified with monolayers of sodium mercaptopropanossulfonato (MPS) to obtain a surface with a negative charge, followed by the steps for the formation of multilayer with chitosan, sodium dodecyl sulphonate (SDS), and nickel phthalocyanine (TsNiPc) obtained by the technical layer-by-layer (LBL) in alternating fashion. Some parameters such as pH (3.5), number of multilayers (n = 10) and supporting electrolyte (Britton-Robinson buffer 0.1 mol L-1), were optimized to obtain the best performance of the sensor. The sensor response was evaluated in batch by Square Wave Voltammetry and flow injection analysis, obtaining a detection limit of 1.2 ?mol L-1 and 1.3 ?mol L -1 respectively. For the application of sensors, the recovery of the analyte in a sample of tap water contaminated on the purpose was 97%, and the value found in a commercial sample showed an error of 4.5% in relation to the reference value.

Resumo: Ao longo do tempo, o uso exagerado de corantes de cabelo, em forma geral, tem apresentado um grande crescimento, e dessa forma os compostos utilizados nessas formulações comerciais tem apresentado interesse, devido a que alguns deles possuem propriedades mutagênicas e carcinogênicas. Entre os corantes que se estudam encontra-se à 2-nitro-p-fenilenodiamina e a 4-nitro-o-fenilenodiamina, que são os utilizados nas formulações comerciais de corantes semipermanentes. O presente trabalho explora metodologias para a construção de sensores que apresentem sensibilidade e seletividade suficientes para a detecção de analitos utilizados na indústria cosmética de tintura para cabelo. O sensor para o corante 2-nitro-p-fenilenodiamina, que apresentou resultados mais promissores, foi construído usando uma superfície de ouro nano-estruturado, modificado com monocamadas de mercaptopropanossulfonato de sódio (MPS), para obter uma superfície com carga negativa, seguido das etapas de formação das multicamadas de quitosana, dodecil sulfonato de sódio (SDS) e ftalocianina de níquel (TsNiPc) obtidos pela técnica layer-by-layer (LBL) em forma alternada. Abstract: Due to the indiscriminate use of hair dyes generally has shown a tremendous growth for a long time. The compounds used in their formulations have shown commercial interest, because some of these hair dyes have mutagenic and carcinogenic properties. Among these dyes that we studied are the 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine and 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine, which are used in commercial formulations as semi-permanent hair dye. The present work explores methods to build sensors that have sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of analytes used in the cosmetic industry for hair dyes. The sensor for the 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine, shows more promising results, which was constructed using a nanostructured gold surface modified with monolayers of sodium mercaptopropanossulfonato (MPS) to obtain a surface with a negative charge, followed by the steps for the formation of multilayer with chitosan, sodium dodecyl sulphonate (SDS), and nickel phthalocyanine (TsNiPc) obtained by the technical layer-by-layer (LBL) in alternating fashion. Some parameters such as pH (3.5), number of multilayers (n = 10) and supporting electrolyte (Britton-Robinson buffer 0.1 mol L-1), were optimized to obtain the best performance of the sensor. The sensor response was evaluated in batch by Square Wave Voltammetry and flow injection analysis, obtaining a detection limit of 1.2 μmol L-1 and 1.3 μmol L -1 respectively. For the application of sensors, the recovery of the analyte in a sample of tap water contaminated on the purpose was 97%, and the value found in a commercial sample showed an error of 4.5% in relation to the reference value.

Bakgrund: Kroniskt obstruktiv lungsjukdom (KOL) är en vanlig sjukdom som drabbar oftast äldre och rökare. Typiska symtom är andnöd, produktiv hosta, trötthet samt återkommande luftvägsinfektioner. Flera olika bidragande orsaker kan leda till att en KOL-patient utvecklar sjukdomen, bland annat rökning, luftföroreningar, socioekonomisk status, astma, genetik, luftvägsinfektioner och dålig kost. KOLpatienter drabbas oftast av försämringsperioder, så kallade KOL-exacerbationer. En KOL-exacerbation kan förekomma i olika grader: som mild, måttlig eller svår. Oavsett svårighetsgraden ges olika läkemedel för att minska frekvensen av exacerbationer och för att förbättra livskvaliteten hos en KOL-patient. Det finns olika tillgängliga läkemedel i dagsläget för att behandla både KOL och KOL-exacerbationer. I detta projektarbete granskades åtta tidigare studier för att undersöka effekten av peroral kortisonkur hos KOL-patienter med mild till måttlig KOL-exacerbation. Även undersöktes om peroral kortisonkur var en effektiv behandling för att minska exacerbationsfrekvens och därmed förbättra livskvaliteten samt hälsostatus hos KOLpatienter. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka vilken evidens som finns för peroral kortisonkur enligt GOLD 2019s rekommendation vid mild-måttlig KOL-exacerbation hos KOL-patienter i GOLD stadium B. Metod: En systematisk litteraturgenomgång gjordes enligt Statens beredning för medicinsk och social utvärdering (SBU) metoden. Databaserna PubMed och Cochrane library användes för att hitta relevanta artiklar för projektarbetet. Både randomiserade studier och systematiska översikter inkluderades i projektarbetet. Bedömning av relevans och kvalitet av artiklarna gjordes med hjälp av mallar från SBU. Resultat: Åtta artiklar inkluderades, av vilka två av hög kvalitet och resterande sex av godtagbar kvalitet. Artiklarnas resultat visade att det fanns evidens för att ge peroral kortisonkur till KOL-patienter med mild till måttlig KOL-exacerbation. Dessutom ger peroral kortisonkur positiv effekt med avseende på excerbationsfrekvens, andfåddhet, hälsostatus och livskvalitet. Risken/biverkningarna av peroral kortisonkur har inte tagit med i detta arbete. Slutsats: Slutsatsen för projektarbetet var att peroralt prednisolon ger effekt vid mild till måttlig KOL-exacerbation i GOLD stadium B och minskar exacerbationsfrekvens, förbättrar lungfunktion samt livskvalitet. En mer nyanserande evidenssammanställning hade kunnat göras om även riskerna med kortisonbehandling hade beaktats.

L'@amélioration des performances pour un sportif de haut niveau et du confort pour l'amateur nécessite des études concernant le matériel, son ergonomie et le geste associé. La démarche de recherche et développement dans le domaine du golf a pour objectif d'obtenir un modèle fiable qui prévoit le comportement du club durant le swing et à l'impact et permet de caractériser les interactions majeures entre le golfeur et son club. Le club est ici étudié dans son contexte d'utilisation, c'est à dire mis en mouvement par le golfeur. Les problèmes d'impact ne sont pas pris en compte. Les sensations du joueur sont associées aux notions d'accélération et d'effort et d'un point de vue scientifique, le problème s'inscrit dans le domaine dynamique non linéaire transitoire de structures flexibles en grands déplacements. La démarche mixte est basée sur une modélisation par la méthode des éléments finis couplée à la mesure des accélérations tridimensionnelles et des efforts internes du club, le swing étant représenté par un double pendule plan. Dans un premier temps, l'analyse des phénomènes et la validation du modèle numérique sont effectuées sur un robot de simulation reproduisant le swing d'un golfeur. Par la suite, le protocole d'essais est mené sur un golfeur professionnel. Une méthode originale d'identification temporelle des paramètres est utilisée. L'ensemble des analyses et des comparaisons des résultats numériques et expérimentaux permet d'obtenir une validation satisfaisante de la modélisation numérique du swing. Les écarts entre mesure et simulation, en termes d'efforts demeurent supérieurs aux écarts sur la cinématique. Les mesures originales effectuées sur golfeur ont permis d'analyser de manière précise un swing réel et de quantifier la notion de sensation. Cette étude a été menée en collaboration avec la société Taylor Made USA et avec le soutien du Groupement de Recherche pluridisciplinaire sur le sport du CNRS (GDR 1094)
Improvement to the performance for professional golfers and to the comfort of amateurs imply studies concerning the equipment, its ergonomy and the associated motion. The aim of the advanced scientific studies in the golf framework is to obtain a model able to predict the club behaviour during the swing and the impact and to characterize the major interactions between the golfer and his club. He re, the club is studied in the context of the game, i. E. Animated by the golfer. Impact problems are not taken into account. Golfer's feelings are associated to forces and accelerations. From a scientific point of view, the problem deals with nonlinear transient dynamics of flexible structures under large motion. The swing is modelled by a planar double pendulum. The mixed approach is based on the finite element method, coupled with the measures of the tridimensional accelerations and of the internal club forces. First, the analysis of the phenomenon and the reliability of the numerical model are performed using a robot which simulates the golfer's swing. Then, the experimental protocol is applied to a professional golfer. A temporal identification method allows the determination of parameters of the golfer's real swing. 8oth analysis and comparison of the experimental and numerical results lead to satisfactory validation of the numerical model of the swing. The discrepancies between measured and calculated forces are greater than for the kinematics. The measurements made with the golfer give a precise analysis of a real swing and a better quantification of the golfer's feelings. The Taylor Made Golf Company, USA, collaborated in this work. Införandet av de nya redovisningsstandarderna IAS/IFRS som tillkommit för harmonisering av Europas redovisningsregler har lett till förändringar i de svenska bolagens redovisning. En av dessa är behandlingen av goodwill samt immateriella tillgångar vid förvärv. Goodwillvärdet ska inte längre skrivas av utan endast skrivas ned vid behov. Företagen ska årligen genomföra ett nedskrivningstest för att undersöka om ett sådant behov föreligger. Vad gäller immateriella tillgångar ska dessa numera i större utsträckning särskiljas från goodwill vid förvärv. I denna uppsats har det undersöks hur dessa förändringar har kommit att påverka redovisningen i 35 svenska bolag. Undersökningen visade att samtliga företag idag lämnar ut mer information i sina årsredovisningar än tidigare, informationsgraden varierade dock väsentligt mellan de olika företagen. Trots att värderingen av immateriella tillgångar och goodwill i huvudsak består av företagens egna subjektiva bedömningar gör denna information att intressenterna lättare kan bilda sig en uppfattning om hur företagen har gått till väga vid dessa bedömningar, vilket sannolikt ökar förståelsen för redovisningen. Trots de förändringar som gjorts kommer ytterligare utveckling av redovisningsreglerna samt praxis för hur dessa skall tillämpas att krävas för att målen med IFRS skall kunna bli verklighet.

The economy depends upon mining, primarily coal, gold, and platinum, tourism to the wildlife parks, and agriculture. Nevertheless poverty is extreme and employment has actually declined in the last decade. The province has the second lowest literacy rate in South Africa.

We tested a new generation of high resolution x-ray zone plates with the scanning x-ray microscope at the National Synchrotron Light Source.1 The zone plates were fabricated by electron beam lithography at IBM.2 They consist of gold rings on a silicon nitride window and have finest rings in the 68–100-nm range. The central region has a thick solid gold plating to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in the foci. Collection efficiencies into first-, second-, and third-order foci were measured, and the nature of the first-order focus was examined in detail. The best zone plates showed negligible astigmatism and a first-order efficiency of ~5 %. One of these was used as the focusing element in scanning x-ray microscopy of biological specimens.

We report tests of a holographic microscope with submicrometer resolution. We used the microscope to record Fourier-transform holograms of gold test patterns (50 nm finest dimension) with 3.4 nm wavelength radiation from the soft-x-ray undulator at the National Synchrotron Light Source. The high-brightness undulator source enabled us to generate holograms of sufficient contrast to be numerically reconstructed from exposures of 10-30 min obtained with a chargecoupled-device (CCD) detector. The coherent x-ray flux through the 100 µ2 test objects was 9 × 105 photons/s and was 2 × 106 photons/s in the reference source. The microscope used a 90 µm diameter zone plate as a beam splitter (50 nm finest zone width) both to illuminate the object and to form a focused reference spot. A low-noise integrating CCD camera recorded the interference between the reference and object wavefields, which had a mean spatial period of ~200 µm. After making background corrections, we performed discrete Fourier-transform reconstructions of 512 × 512 pixel arrays of the hologram data, which yielded images of the test patterns having features resolved to better than 1 µm. This approach to Fourier-transform holography demonstrates high-resolution x-ray microscopy by using a relatively coarse-grained detector; this permits fast turnaround from hologram acquisition to wave-front reconstruction.

This paper studies the proposition that capital inflows tend to take the form of FDI -i.e., the share of FDI in total liabilities tends to be higher- in countries that are safer, more promising and with better institutions and policies. It finds that this view is patently wrong since it stands the historical record on its head. It then uses alternative theories to make sense of the facts. It begins by studying the determinants of the size and composition of the flows of private capital across countries. It finds that while capital flows tend to go to countries that are safer and have better institutions and financial markets, the share of FDI in total flows is not an indication of good health. On the contrary, countries that are riskier, less financially developed and have weaker institutions tend to attract less capital but more of it in the form of FDI. Hence, interpreting the rising share of FDI as a sign of good health is unwarranted. This is even more so, given that FDI's recent rise has taken place while total private capital inflows have fallen.

This paper assesses labor market segmentation across formal and informal salaried jobs and self-employment in three Latin American and three transition countries. It looks separately at the markets for skilled and unskilled labor, inquiring if segmentation is an exclusive feature of the latter. Longitudinal data are used to assess wage differentials and mobility patterns across jobs. To study mobility, the paper compares observed transitions with a new benchmark measure of mobility under the assumption of no segmentation. It finds evidence of a formal wage premium relative to informal salaried jobs in the three Latin American countries, but not in transition economies. It also finds evidence of extensive mobility across these two types of jobs in all countries, particularly from informal salaried to formal jobs. These patterns are suggestive of a preference for formal over informal salaried jobs in all countries. In contrast, there is little mobility between self-employment and formal salaried jobs, suggesting the existence of barriers to this type of mobility or a strong assortative matching according to workers individual preferences. Lastly, for both wage differentials and mobility, there is no statistical difference across skill levels, indicating that the markets for skilled and unskilled labor are similarly affected by segmentation.

The formality status of a job is the most widely used indicator of job quality in developing countries. However, a number of studies argue that, at least for some workers, the informality status may be driven by choice rather than exclusion. This paper uses job satisfaction data from three low-income countries (Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador) to assess whether informal jobs are less valued than formal jobs. The paper finds substantial differences in job satisfaction within different types of informal jobs. More importantly, according to self-reported measures of job satisfaction, informality is not necessarily associated with poor job quality. This correspondence varies across countries, and seems to be lower for less-skilled workers.

This paper demonstrates that good governance in one country can influence governance improvements in neighboring countries and highlights that regional political and economic cooperation can benefit institutional development across borders. Governance has a spatial dimension due to spillovers and resource flows across juridical boundaries. This paper finds that governance in a given country—manifested most clearly through voice and accountability—exhibits a positive relationship with those in neighboring countries. Feedback mechanisms are traced in that any change in the income level of a country can affect its governance performance and also impact the governance scores of neighboring countries. This phenomenon is observed in the “Arab Spring,” “Me Too,” and “Black Lives Matter” cross-border movements

Stratigraphic and lithogeochemical data were collected from selected drill core from the Nugget Pond gold deposit in the Betts Cove area, Newfoundland. The stratigraphy consists of a lower unit of basaltic rocks that are massive to pillowed (Mount Misery Formation). This is overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Scrape Point Formation that consist of lower unit of turbiditic siltstone and hematitic cherts/iron formations (the Nugget Pond member); the unit locally has a volcaniclastic rich-unit at its base and grades upwards into finer grained volcaniclastic/turbiditic rocks. This is capped by basaltic rocks of the Scrape Point Formation that contain pillowed and massive mafic flows that are distinctively plagioclase porphyritic to glomeroporphyritic. The mafic rocks of the Mount Misery Formation have island arc tholeiitic affinities, whereas Scrape Point Formation mafic rocks have normal mid-ocean ridge (N-MORB) to backarc basin basalt (BABB) affinities. One sample of the latter formation has a calc-alkalic affinity. All of these geochemical features are consistent with results and conclusions from previous workers in the area. Clastic sedimentary rocks and Fe-rich sedimentary rocks of the Scrape Point Formation have features consistent with derivation from local, juvenile sources (i.e., intra-basinal mafic rocks). The Scrape Point Formation sedimentary rocks with the highest Fe/Al ratios, inferred to have greatest amount of hydrothermally derived Fe, have positive Ce anomalies on Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized trace element plots. These features are consistent with having formed via hydrothermal venting into an anoxic/ sub-oxic water column. Further work is needed to test whether these redox features are a localized feature (i.e., restricted basin) or a widespread feature of the late Cambrian-early Ordovician Iapetus Ocean, as well as to delineate the role that these Fe-rich sedimentary rocks have played in the localization of gold mineralization within the Nugget Pond deposit.

Now, more than ever, is Nordic collaboration required across all levels of governance to help overcome the devastating socio-economic impacts of the pandemic and to solve the shared challenges posed by climate change and growing urban-rural divides. This policy brief examines six good practice examples of collaborative public service delivery from across the Nordic Region, highlighting the main drivers, challenges and enablers of collaboration and the replication potential of these Nordic collaborative examples. The policy brief finds that new and innovative models of Nordic collaboration are constantly emerging thanks to rapid technological developments that are helping to bring stakeholders together to solve common societal challenges. The high levels of cooperation outlined indicate that collaborative governance is continually evolving within the Nordic context.

The understanding of the economic effect of formal institutional rules has progressed substantially in recent decades. These formal analyses have tended to take for granted that institutional arenas such as Congress are the places where decision-making takes place. That is a good approximation in some cases (such as many developed countries today) but not in others. If countries differ in how institutionalized their policymaking is, it is possible that the impact of formal political rules on policy outcomes might depend on that. This paper explores that hypothesis and finds that some important claims regarding the impact of constitutions on policy outcomes do not hold for countries in which institutionalization is low. The findings suggest the need to develop a broader class of policymaking models in which the degree to which decision-making follows "the rules" is also endogenized.

The recent global financial crisis has put the spotlight on macro-prudential policies to protect firms and households from problems emanating from the financial sector. This paper proposes an analytical framework that combines exogenous and endogenous risks, the latter seen as stemming from frictions in financial markets. Arguing that endogenous risks may be systemic and costly, the paper employs a database of emerging market corporate bond spreads and finds evidence that endogenous risks are present and have amplified the effects of financial crises. Larger financial systems are found to exacerbate the impact of crises, and weaker financial systems are found to exacerbate particularly the impact of banking crises. The results suggest that policymakers should monitor time-varying systemic risks using both price and quantity signals and take actions in good times to mitigate potential amplifying effects at times of stress.

Land use changes that degrade water quality and stream habitat can negatively impact aquatic communities. Monitoring trends in aquatic community composition and habitat conditions is a robust way to assess stream integrity and health. Herbert Hoover National Historic Site (NHS) is in eastern Iowa where dominant land use consists of row-crop and grassland agriculture. A portion of an unnamed tributary of the West Branch of Wapsinonoc Creek, known as Hoover Creek, flows through the park. In 2008, the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (Heartland Network) of the National Park Service (NPS) began monitoring aquatic communities (fish and invertebrates), physical habitat, and water quality at Hoover Creek within the park. This report summarizes four years of data to assess the baseline conditions of Hoover Creek within Herbert Hoover NHS. Aquatic invertebrate taxa richness ranged from 21 to 32 among all years monitored. Three of these taxa are sensitive to poor water quality and habitat conditions. The invertebrate community was dominated by true flies in the Chironomidae family, Oligochaete worms, and mayflies in the Baetidae family. These taxa are all tolerant of poor water quality and habitat conditions. However, in 2011, the sensitive caddisfly Ceratopsyche was also abundant. Mean Hilsenhoff Biotic Index values indicated the invertebrate community fluctuated over time, ranging from fairly poor in 2017 to good condition in 2011. Ten fish species were collected at Hoover Creek across the four years sampled with seven of those species found in all years. All fish species collected were either moderately tolerant or tolerant to poor habitat and water quality conditions; the community was dominated by johnny darter (Etheostoma nigrum), creek chub (Semotilus atromaculatus), and blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus). Based on the Index of Biotic Integrity developed for Iowa streams, the fish community ranged from fair condition in 2008, 2014, and 2017 to good condition in 2011. Hoover Creek was found to have predominately fine to medium gravel substrate with high embeddedness, and banks were steep and tall and consisted of fine silt substrate. With the exception of turbidity after a rain event in 2008, water quality parameters were within state standards. The four years of stream biota data coupled with habitat data should form a good baseline for assessing changes or trends in the aquatic community and overall stream health of Hoover Creek.

Recent policy changes regarding the placement of dredged material have encouraged the USACE to increase its beneficial use (BU) of the sediments dredged from the nation’s navigation channels. A good portion of this material is fine grained (<63 μm), which traditionally has limited use in BU applications, in part due to its dispersive nature. A need exists to evaluate the potential of stabilizing and using fine-grained sediment (FGS) in BU projects. Previous studies have shown the addition of granular sand to FGS reduces the mobility of the bed. The potential of using Granular Activated Carbon (GAC), an amendment commonly used in environmental capping involving FGS, as a similar bed stabilizing material was explored in this study. A series of laboratory erosion tests using Sedflume were performed on FGS-GAC mixtures that ranged from 5% to 20% GAC by mass. Results suggested that GAC content ≤10% had no influence on the stability of the bed while GAC content ≥15% appeared to reduce both critical shear stress (τcr) and erosion rate (n). However, when compared to control cores, those without GAC, clear evidence of bed stabilization of FGS from the addition of GAC was not observed.
