The goal of the following thesis is to transfer radar basic theory in a practical work using Texas Instrument’s mmWave radar series. The range of practical applications for FMCW radars has increased, for example in automotive sector. Understanding the basics of radar mathematics in a simplified way, as well as the transfer from theory to practical work is important for any engineer working on radar projects. Even if the theory is known, the way from a theory to a running system can be hard, facing several problems, because the reality is limited. In two experiments, data from the radar is collected while cars are crossing the observation area of the radar.The data is then used to count the number of vehicles passing the observation area and to estimate the movement of the objects in the field of view.

The purpose of this study was to identify and compare specific writing assignments provided in the four basal mathematics textbook series, grades six through eight, accepted by the state of Texas in 1990. The student and teachers' editions by each publisher were analyzed (1) for the total number and types of writing assignments provided, (2) to compare how the writing assignments compared with the four purposes of writing mandated in the English Language Arts Framework, Kindergarten through Grade 12 for the state of Texas, (3) to compare how the writing assignments compared with the recommendations for communication opportunities stated in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics for grades five through eight, and (4) to compare the number and types of writing assignments among the four publishers. The total number of writing assignments varied among publishers ranging from 151 to 316 in the student editions and from 147 to 523 in the teacher's editions. The findings of this study indicate that from 80 to 98 percent of the writing assignments in the student editions and from 72 to 96 percent of the writing assignments in the teacher's editions corresponded to the Informative purpose of writing. Very few writing assignments were provided corresponding to the Literary, Expressive, and Persuasive purposes of writing. The writing assignments corresponding to the NCTM recommendations varied among publishers. Writing assignments dealing with modeling mathematical situations ranged from 14 to 66 percent in the student editions and from 24 to 39 percent in the teacher's editions. Writing assignments focusing on understanding and definitions ranged 15 to 61 percent in the student editions and from 31 to 53 percent in the teacher's editions. Writing assignments focusing on interpretation and application ranged from 5 to 29 percent in the student editions and from 10 to 15 percent in the teacher's editions.

Science fiction films may be viewed as existing as threads within a web, and at the same time constituting the web. The metaphor is apt: texts and contexts and their relationship have a difficult accommodation with each other, an interdependent and dynamic relationship. The text is a thread in the web, as are elements of context, yet the threads are in a symbiotic and constantly changing relationship with each other, as the web is constantly in a state of renewal and change. At the same time, the text itself is a web, as are the various contexts. The threads are both ephemeral and fleeting, while incredibly strong. This thesis is about the polysemy of science fiction film: its subject is the films of the fifties that belong to the genre of science fiction. But the area of study began as an investigation of the science in science fiction films; the way in which films construct that science, the end result of that construction and the totality of the discourse of science in relation to other discourses of power and influence. The investigation of those issues involves a multi-layered investigation into science fiction, in a similar way to Tulloch and Alvarado's approach to the Dr Who television series.1 Approaching science fiction films from a perspective of genre, as in chapter one, uncovers a set of arguments about the science in science fiction, as well as establishing the global nature of some science fiction. These concerns lead into the discussion in chapter two of the social and historical context of the fifties, specifically in the US. Science plays a major role in these contexts, in the sense of the importance of science in creating these contexts (from this perspective) as well as the effects of the application of this science. But the historical and cultural contexts tend to suggest that science fiction films are in large part both a response to the social and historical context, and also create that context. This would not be quite accurate: the production of many science fiction films mobilise other arguments, arguments relating to the industry of Hollywood, and the specific industrial context that gave rise to some very financially successful science fiction films, as well as some films where the budget was good for a few days filming. Science and technology are sometimes important elements in this industrial context as well. Part II traces the nature of science in these films, using the contexts in Part I to anchor the science and its implications and effects. Foregrounded is the debate in which science is both key player and, in many cases, antagonist. The debate is traced and the various representations of science and its nature are tracked and highlighted. Science can cause change, by virtue of its nature of uncovering superstition, but the worth or desirability of that change is open to question. The control of science is a related issue. The thesis examines science at a period that saw the efflorescence of science fiction films. The examination of those films tells us a great deal about the concerns of the time, as well as the science that figures so powerfully in the webs of culture of the fifties.

This doctoral thesis examines the literary series [collection litteraire], considered at one and the same time as a form of publication defined and redefined by the publisher since the invention of the printing press and as a paratextual component that has the ability to act on the process of reading the text: An original aspect of this work is that it combines in the same analysis fields of knowledge that are rarely studied together: the history of the book and of publishing, the sociology of literature and in particular the theory of the literary institution, the theory of paratextuality and reader response theory. This thesis examines separately the two dimensions of the topic but follows a logical progression that concludes with a third section. The first section explores the hypothesis that the literary series is the outcome of a long process of definition and specialization which has accompanied the evolution of French publishing and literature. It then goes on to examine cases illustrating the "convergence" of the two, such as the "Bibliotheque Bleue", the "Bibliotheque universelle des romans", the "Bibliotheque Charpentier", the collections of livraisons illustrees published in the 1850's, the "Collection Michel Levy" and a few collections published by Flammarion and Fayard. Following a rereading of the Genettien paratexte (1987) that reviews and further refines the parameters of the concept (its boundaries, its components and their functions) in order to increase its scope of action, the second section explores in depth the essence of the encounter between the series and literature itself and proposes a theory of the series which positions it in relation to a community of readers and recognizes a different functioning, different risks and effects depending on whether it is destined for a specialized public or the general public. Finally, the third section picks up the historical thread that the first section suspended at the beginning of the 20th century

O amor é um dos assuntos mais recorrentes em todas as formas artísticas. Escritores, artistas e diretores se debruçaram sobre ele, como assunto e como musa. Diante de uma sociedade que abandonou antigos padrões, rompendo com casamentos, inaugurando novas aventuras sexuais e questionando que tipos de relação gostariam de viver, este trabalho investigou o panorama das relações amorosas no cinema contemporâneo. Para tanto, utilizou noções de Gilles Deleuze e partiu da crise da imagem-ação e do rompimento com o cinema narrativo clássico para examinar o cinema atual diante das características da imagem-tempo. Tendo imperado um cinema romântico do happy end até os anos 60, questionamos qual o amor que surgiu a partir desse momento. Os caminhos em busca dessa resposta foram traçados pelos estudos teóricos sobre o amor, os afetos e o cinema e por meio de análise fílmica de quatro filmes principais: “Uma mulher é uma mulher” (1961), de Jean-Luc Godard; “A Bela Junie” (2008), de Christophe Honoré; “Um lugar qualquer” (2010), de Sofia Coppola e “Os sonhadores” (2003), de Bernardo Bertolucci. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Love is one of the most recurrent subject in all art forms. Writers, artists and directors have looked upon it as a theme and as a muse. Faced with a society that abandoned old patterns, breaking marriages, opening new sexual adventures and wondering what kind of relationship they would like to live, this study investigated the panorama of love relationships in contemporary cinema. For this purpose, we used concepts of Gilles Deleuze and started with the crisis of the action-image and break with the classical narrative cinema to examine the current cinema on the characteristics of the time-image. Having reigned a romantic cinema with happy ending stories, until the 60s, we questioned the love that emerged from that time on. The paths in search of this response were outlined by theoretical studies about love, affections and film and film analysis through four major films: "A woman is a woman" (1961), by Jean-Luc Godard, "La belle personne" (2008), by Christophe Honoré, "Somewhere"(2010), by Sofia Coppola's and "The dreamers" (2003), by Bernardo Bertolucci.

This thesis investigates conceptual networks —systems of organising, understanding and explaining thought and knowledge— and the ways in which they underlie both text and its mise en page across a range of thirteenth- and fourteenth-century French and Catalan literary texts and their manuscript witnesses. Each of the three chapters explores a separate corpus of texts, using two of four interrelated network theories: Michel Serres’ notion of parasites and hosts as the basic interconnecting units that combine to constitute all relational networks; the ubiquitous organizational tree; Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the fold as the primary factor in producing differentiation and identity; and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s unruly, anti-hierarchical and anti-arborescent rhizomatic systems. The first chapter engages primarily with parasites and trees; the second with trees and folds; and the third with folds and rhizomes. However, resonances with the other network theories are discussed as they occur, in order to demonstrate the fundamentally interconnected and often interchangeable nature of these systems. Each chapter includes close analysis of manuscript witnesses of the texts under discussion. The first chapter, ‘Saints Denis and Fanuel: Parasitism and Arborescence on the Manuscript Page’, examines parasitic and arboreal networks in two hagiographic texts: late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century prose redactions of the Vie de Saint Denis, and the thirteenth‐century hagiographic romance Li Romanz de Saint Fanuel. The second chapter, ‘Ramon Llull’s Folding Forests: The World, the Tree and the Book’, addresses arborescent and folding structures in Llull’s encyclopaedic Arbre de ciència [Tree of Science], composed between 1295 and 1296. The third chapter, ‘Transgender Genealogy: Turning, Folding and Crossing Gender’, considers three characters in medieval French texts who can be read as transgender: Saint Fanuel; the King of Torelore in Aucassin et Nicolette; and Blanchandin/e in Tristan de Nanteuil. The chapter explores the ways in which these characters’ queer trajectories can be understood through conceptions of directionality which relate to the fold and the rhizome.

Even it has been conceived to claim the entertainment, not the education, television is endowed with enormous strength training, as it can unite two great powers: the information and entertainment. Through the approach of the viewer daily life, achieved mainly through the fictional narrative, television can create more identification between the viewer and characters, transmitting the desired information. This research aimed to analyze the fictional narrative addressed to brazilian teens, holding as object the program "Confissões de Adolescente . The problem that we tried discuss was: Through the fiction, can we discuss subjects deemed controversial or dense? How is its approaching? Our hypothesis is that this idea is plausible. Due to the structure of episodes, "Confissões de Adolescente" had the possibility of working each theme in more depth. As such, abortion, drug, policy, among others. The objective of the research was to examine structurally the program, bringing to the highlight the resources used to capture the attention of teenage public and create identification between them and the program itself. It was intended also to identify how the themes were entered and treated in the episodes and how the program was positioned in relation to them. The research had as theoretical basis on authors as Arlindo Machado (analysis television), Ana Maria Balogh (fictional speech), Joan Ferrés (socialization through television), besides Sigmund Freud (Psychoanalysis), Contardo Calligaris e Sérgio Ozella (Psychology Social-historic)
Mesmo que tenha sido concebida com a finalidade de entreter e não de educar, a televisão é dotada de uma enorme força pedagógica, pois consegue unir dois grandes poderes: a informação e o entretenimento. É através de uma aproximação com o cotidiano do telespectador, conseguida principalmente por meio da narrativa ficcional, que ela consegue criar maior identificação do telespectador com as personagens e situações, transmitindo, desse modo, a informação desejada. Esta pesquisa buscou analisar a narrativa ficcional dirigida aos adolescentes brasileiros, tendo como objeto o seriado "Confissões de Adolescente". O problema que se procurou discutir foi: Pode-se, por meio da ficção, abordar assuntos considerados densos ou polêmicos? Nossa hipótese é a de que essa idéia é plausível. Devido à estrutura baseada em episódios, "Confissões de Adolescente" obteve a possibilidade de trabalhar cada tema discutido, como, por exemplo, aborto, drogas, política, entre outros, com maior profundidade. O objetivo da pesquisa consistiu em analisar estruturalmente o programa destacando, assim, os recursos utilizados para capturar a atenção do público adolescente bem como criar a identificação desse público com o programa. S’éloigner de ses semblables et s’épanouir sans la compagnie de ses contemporains a animé de tout temps l’homme aux prises avec son siècle. Un tel désir s’est particulièrement cristallisé dans l’Espagne des XVIe et XVIIe siècle, tandis qu’une crise économique, morale et religieuse mettait à mal les fondements mêmes d’une société espagnole critiquée pour son clientélisme et son iniquité. L’expression de cette désillusion a fécondé un courant de la poésie morale, une poésie philosophique héritée du stoïcisme et fédérée par les lieux communs antithétiques du menosprecio de corte y alabanza de aldea (le mépris de la vie courtisane et les louanges de la vie rurale). La série textuelle engendrée par cette dialectique de la vie retirée du monde, trop souvent réduite au beatus ille horatien (cynique point de vue d’un usurier rêveur), dévoile, à la lumière d’un corpus de soixante-douze textes, ce perpétuel travail de réécriture et ses libertés de traitement poétique aussi bien que philosophique. L’étude des modalités de l’énonciation, des thématiques et des lieux communs, ainsi que de la stylistique et de la prosodie, s’opérant au cœur de chaque composition et dans le rapport diachronique de celle-ci au corpus, tend à mettre en exergue la portée argumentative de la série textuelle et l’ensemble de ses variations
Man struggling with his own century has always been driven by the desire to stay away from his fellow men and to flourish without the company of his contemporaries. In Spain, such a desire specifically crystallized during the 16th and 17th centuries just as an economic, moral and religious crisis was shaking the foundations of a Spanish society criticized for its clientelism and iniquity. The manifestation of this disillusionment gave birth to a stream of moral poetry, a philosophical poetry inherited from stoicism and federated by the antithetical platitudes of menosprecio de corte y alabanza de aldea (« scorn of court life and praise of village life »). The series of texts generated by this dialectic of life in seclusion, which is too often confined to the horatian beatus ille, discloses through a corpus of seventy-two texts the perpetual process of rewriting and the freedoms of poetic and philosophical treatment. The study on the types of formulation, the themes and common assumptions, and also on the stylistic devices and prosody carried out within each composition and in the diachronic relation between the study itself and the corpus tends to emphasize the argumentative depth of the series of texts and the combination of its variations

L’étude présente l’histoire de la classe du participe à travers un corpus de grammaires del’espagnol, du français, de l’italien et du portugais parues entre le XVe et le XVIIIe siècle.La démarche comparative s’appuie sur le principe méthodologique de la mise en série d’une centaine d’ouvrages regroupés et confrontés selon des paramètres variables : la chronologie, le thème ou la tradition grammaticale de la langue-objet.La première partie aborde la question de la catégorisation en linguistique et s’interroge sur la nature des formes non finies du verbe, tout particulièrement du participe et de son emploi dans les formes verbales analytiques. La deuxième partie traite de l’histoire du participe sous un angle général. Ainsi, après avoir donné un aperçu des aspects problématiques qui intéressent les grammairiens grecs et latins, l’analyse se centre sur le traitement de la classe dans les grammaires des langues romanes. La troisième partie s’attache à étudier les approches et les concepts dont se servent les grammairiens de la Renaissance pour traiter les temps composés ainsi que la façon dont ils décrivent et (re)catégorisent les formes participiales de ces temps verbaux
The study investigates the history of the word-class of participle through a close study of a corpus of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian grammars which were published between the 15th and 18th centuries. The comparative approach is based on the methodological principle of “series of texts”, by grouping and collating a hundred works according to several variable parameters: the chronology, the theme or the grammatical tradition of the language in question.The first part of the study deals with the linguistic categorization and questions the nature of the non-finite verbal forms, especially the participle and its use in an analytical verbal form. The second part deals with the history of the participle from a more general point of view. Thus, after an overview of the problematic aspects of Greek and Latin grammarians, the analysis focuses on the treatment of the word-class in the grammars of the Romance languages. The third part focuses on the approaches and concepts used by the Renaissance grammarians to deal with compound tenses and on how they described and (re)-categorized the participle forms of these verbal tenses
El estudio presenta la historia de la clase del participio a través de un corpus de gramáticas de español, francés, italiano y portugués publicadas entre los siglos XV y XVIII. El enfoque comparativo se basa en el principio metodológico de la constitución de series textuales, que nos permite agrupar y cotejar un centenar de textos en función de parámetros variables: la cronología, el tema o la tradición gramatical de la lengua objeto.La primera parte aborda el asunto de la categorización en lingüística e indaga la naturaleza de las formas no finitas del verbo, especialmente la del participio y su utilización en las formas analíticas del verbo. La segunda parte propone una aproximacióna la historia del participio desde una perspectiva más general. Así pues, tras una cala en los aspectos problemáticos relacionados con el participio tratados por los gramáticos griegos y latinos, el análisis se centra en el tratamiento de la clase en las gramáticas de las lenguas romances. La tercera parte investiga sobre los enfoques y los conceptos que emplean los gramáticos del Renacimiento para tratar los tiempos compuestos, y sobre el modo en que describen y (re)categorizan las formas participiales de esos tiempos verbales

The disciplines of informatics and information visualization have developed in response to societal needs to find new insight in complex datasets and have been enabled by technological advancements. Joint application of these fields can demonstrate themes and connections that are otherwise not apparent. Methodological approaches, such as direct network analysis, can be applied to policy documents to determine if action or policy recommendations match the goals or objectives stated in the within the same documents. Informatics and information visualization can also be used to analyze changes of themes found within the documents over time. This paper seeks to leverage informatics and information visualization methodologies as a novel approach to policy analysis. In particular, directed network and time burst techniques are used to analyze water management policy documents for the State of Texas. The congruency between the stated goals or objectives and recommendations sections is evaluated at a topical level within each planning document and possible changes in important water policy concepts over time are highlighted by comparing among multiple planning documents. Although there limitations to the process at the time of publication due to the newness of the software utilized, this paper demonstrates that the products still lead to unique and insightful conclusions.

This paper engages its research object to Pey-Chwen Lin’s work series “Antithesis and Intertext” to probes into the dialectics and intertext of works in female consciousness of subjectivity. The “Antithesis and Intertext” series one of is the most important works in Lin’s period of so called “deconstruct of Patriarchy” which was first exhibited at Taipei Fine Arts Museum in 1995. Although this series that belonging to the early period is very significant in her transformation of creation, which has postmodern features as well as multi-textual expression of “Inter-texts” and “dialectics”, along with a distinct subject of female consciousness that also influences her later period works style. This study has certain aspects as following: firstly, to explores Pey-Chwen Lin's life with her artistic cultivate background at the creation narration, through an interview in-depth with the artist; to understand the evolution and concepts of her creation career in concerning about certain issues and interrelationship with relevant course of her life expansion; moreover, to compare her with Mary Kelly conceptual work of “Post Partum Document”, in addition, to try to explore Pey-Chwen Lin's inspiration for creation from those ideas, also to survey the evolution of style development. Since the custom of women’s “foot-binding” in the oriental tradition is an important symbol in shaping of Lin’s “Antithesis and Intertext” from which the issue was orientated itself into her conception, so I have to explore the creative motives in the exhibition to depict its derivation of sign foot-binding, and with this genealogy we can review their form and content in a post-modern aspect. Furthermore, based on the analytic theory of semiotics and hermeneutics, this paper takes on surveying the multiple textual and dialectics in Lin’s work as well as elucidating the invisibility and implication within the text-interpretation in hermeneutic perspectives. And finally, in the bodily performance of “female Consciousness of subjectivity” and “anti-mythic” into de-embodiment, this paper is required to respond to the social reality and it critique through mutual dialectics. In addition to reflection of the female arts and relevant arts criticism, and following the trace of western feminist art and the development of Taiwan female arts, as well as reviewing of arts evaluation on “Antithesis and Intertext” namely in a historical point of view, we do examine how the influential and development of female consciousness of subjectivity was formed in Pey-Chwen Lin’s works. The conclusion, showing in the internalizing process of explicit awareness of female consciousness, we can see a boundless enthusiasm and dedication to art in Pey-Chwen Lin devoting to the inheritance of art education, her increasing to establish more influence and consequence endowment in Taiwan art, then to end with this paper we try to give some suggestions with future study to a whole review of her outstanding works.

In recent decades, the craze for Chinese language teaching has become more and more prosperous. Therefore, textbooks using Chinese as a second language are constantly being introduced, and learners can choose appropriate textbooks according to their own needs. The types of Chinese-learning textbooks are quite diverse. From basic listening, speaking, reading and writing, daily life, to professional textbooks with specific skills as targets, there are very encouraging developments. In Taiwan, most of the learners who use Chinese as a second language are mainly adults. Therefore, the development of adult Chinese textbooks is richer than the Chinese textbooks for children. However, due to the increasing number of children learners at home and abroad, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council has also developed relevant guidelines and textbooks. There are many more choices on the market today. Nowadays,among many of children's Chinese textbooks on the market, the content of the textbooks is mostly targeted and interesting. However, there is no established standards for how to arrange the content and how to choose the vocabulary. Therefore, this study selects two sets of beginner-level children's Chinese textbooks that are similar in object, regionality, and relevance—Chinese Wonderland Series and MeiZhou Chinese, to explore the differences in content layout and vocabularies between these two sets of textbooks. This paper summarizes the commonalities and characteristics of children's Chinese textbooks, and discusses the texts and situations between the two sets of textbooks, and also give beginner-level children's Chinese textbook editors and teachers some reference and direction.

Об’єкт дослідження: лінгвостилістичні особливості в телесеріалі “Good Omens” Мета роботи: окреслити способи перекладу або відтворення лінгвостилістичних особливостей в аудіовізуальному матеріалі українською мовою. Теоретико-методологічні засади: переклад аудіо-візуальних матеріалів (О. В. Козуляєв, Р. О. Рожков, О. Ю. Мамонова, Ф. Шом, Х. Готліб, І. Милевич), фразеологізмів (М. Мороховський, В. Виноградов) та стилістичних прийомів (І. Р. Гальперін та Т. А. Казакова). Отримані результати: більшість вчених згодні в своїх визначеннях, що кінотекст – це сукупність діалогу з кадрами та додатковими звуковими доріжками, які впливають на визначення цього тексту. Серед знайдених стилістичних прийомів виділяються своєю кількістю каламбур, оксюморон та зевгма. Оскільки саме вони створюють комедійний ефект, який притаманний цьому телесеріалу, варто звернути особливу увагу на їх переклад. Нажаль, відтворити каламбур було складно, а іноді неможливо, тому ми бачимо деяку втрату змісту. Більшість інших стилістичних прийомів вдалося відтворити в українській мові. Ми бачимо наявність великої кількості імен та фразеологізмів з Біблії, які потрібно перекладати еквівалентним способом. Варто зазначити, що в нашому випадку відтворення загальнолінгвістичних компетенцій впливає на реконструктивну компетенцію, тобто здатність відтворити «світ серіалу».
EN : The presented paper is dedicated to the analysis of the translation of linguostylistic devices in the “Good Omens” TV series. The object of the work can be defined as research of linguo-stylistic devices and their possible Ukrainian equivalents in the context of screen translation. The main aim of the paper consists of analyzing the ways and methods of recreating linguo-stylistic devices in Ukrainian screen translation. We used such methods as deduction, observation, and synthesis. It determined the accomplishment of such objectives as: - profound analysis and systematization of the theoretical foundations of the theory of the screen translation; - investigation of examples and reintroducing them in Ukrainian screen translation of “Good Omens” TV series. We investigated the nature and complexity of screen translation (D. Chiaro, Y. Gambier, I. Mylevich, N. Baumgarten). The found results are proving, that multimodality of film translation is the key part of the translation of linguo-stylistic devices. That’s why we need to encounter multiple levels of information. The scientific novelty of the presented research lies in the investigation of ways of translating linguo-stylistic devices in films and TV series.
