The life, scientific and pedagogical activities of Vasil Pavlovich Tepin, one of the organizer of the Belarusian State University, are considered in this article. As a dean of the faculty of pre-university education and later – associate professor at the pedagogical faculty – he published number of scientific and methodical works, made a significant contribution not only to the formation of university education, but also in the development of the Belarusian high school. V. P. Tepin was one of the victims of Stalin repressions of 1930s. After the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he stayed in Minsk and worked in the School Department of local administration. During the German occupation, he wrote his last work, «History of the Belarusian State University», in which he outlined his assessment of the events that preceded the creation of the university, the history of the first years of the BSU activities, his attitude to a number of teachers and political leaders of Belarus during the interwar period. The memoirs of V. P. Tepin, taken in comparison with the memoirs of other BSU staff and students of those two decades, help to reconstruct in more details the little-studied pages of the history of the first Belarusian university.

Grain size parameters and clay mineralogical analyses were used to characterize and compare Okareka Ash and post-Okareka tephric loess sampled at eight sites on a transect in Rotorua district, North Island, New Zealand. Grain size distribution analyses show consistently lower mean size and better sorting of the tephric loess compared with the Okareka Ash. The mean grain size of the loess is strongly influenced by the mean grain size of the tephra. Trends in the distribution of biotite and halloysite support the grain size distribution analyses. Taken with field observations, the analytical evidence allows differentiation between Okareka Ash and overlying associated tephric loess.

The micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are exposed to a several situations external to their main activities, for that reason MSMEs are forced to develop new strategies that allow them to continue in the business, even in the adversity. In addition, the business association has become a relevant issue in the public and private agenda, because this is a way for the MSMEs to increase their competitiveness and achieve specific objectives, which if done individually it would be a slower process and with less impact for the local economic development. With this background, the objective of this research is to determinate if in Tepic City, Nayarit, the inter-business associations serve or can serve as a strategy for boost the economic development of the area. A semi-structured interview was conducted with two established inter-business associations: Association of Automobile Distributors of Nayarit, and Tepic Hotels and Motels Association. The main result is that the currently established business associations have as main motivation to have power of decision in the sector, moreover to have representation in front of government policies, without forgetting the join structure which has allowed them to improve their quality and training.

Despite recent advances in mass spectrometry, proteomic characterization of transport vesicles remains challenging. Here, we describe a multivariate proteomics approach to analyzing clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs) from HeLa cells. siRNA knockdown of coat components and different fractionation protocols were used to obtain modified coated vesicle-enriched fractions, which were compared by stable isotope labeling of amino acids in cell culture (SILAC)-based quantitative mass spectrometry. 10 datasets were combined through principal component analysis into a “profiling” cluster analysis. Overall, 136 CCV-associated proteins were predicted, including 36 new proteins. The method identified >93% of established CCV coat proteins and assigned >91% correctly to intracellular or endocytic CCVs. Furthermore, the profiling analysis extends to less well characterized types of coated vesicles, and we identify and characterize the first AP-4 accessory protein, which we have named tepsin. Finally, our data explain how sequestration of TACC3 in cytosolic clathrin cages causes the severe mitotic defects observed in auxilin-depleted cells. The profiling approach can be adapted to address related cell and systems biological questions.

Herbivores and plants have been engaged in a tight co-evolutionary arms race, and saliva played important roles in this process. Some herbivore-derived small molecules or proteins called herbivore-associated molecular patterns (HAMPs) can be recognized by plants and thus trigger plant immune responses. Another type of salivary proteins, called effectors, utilize various strategies to suppress plant defense responses to establish successful feeding. The tomato red spider mite Tetranychus evansi is a worldwide pest of Solanaceous crops and causes enormous economic damage in many regions of the world. During the feeding process, T. evansi secretes saliva into plant cells through cheliceral stylets. Secreted saliva plays crucial roles in modulating plant-mite interaction, such as effectors Te28 and Te84 (Villarroel et al., 2016). We previously identified 136 salivary proteins from T. evansi by transcriptome and LC-MS/MS analyses (Huang et al., 2018). However, the role of these salivary proteins in mite-plant interaction was unknown. Here, we identified a salivary protein involved in the mite-plant interaction (Cui et al., 2022). This protein encodes a protein disulfide isomerase (TePDI) and acts as a HAMP that triggers plant defenses by inducing ROS burst, callose deposition and plant defense-related genes in Nicotiana benthamiana. TePDI can be recognized by multiple Solanaceae plants such as tomato, pepper, and eggplant. TePDI-mediated cell death in N. benthamiana is dependent on the plant signaling molecules SGT1 (suppressor of the G2 allele of skp1) and HSP90 (heat shock protein 90). To better feed on plants, T. evansi inhibited TePDI-triggered cell death and plant defense responses by secreting effectors Te28 and Te84. Further analysis revealed that PDI from phylogenetically distinct herbivorous and non-herbivorous arthropods all triggered cell death and immune response in N. benthamiana. Moreover, silencing PDI gene in spider mites and whiteflies resulted in the reduced survival rate of both pests. Altogether, our study revealed that PDI is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it is functionally conserved in herbivores and required for their survival; on the other hand, it is recognized by Solanaceae plants and enhances plant resistance against herbivores. Our findings indicate that plants utilize evolutionarily conserved HAMPs to activate plant defense and resist pest damage, providing a potential strategy for pest management.

ABSTRACTThe Tahunaatara sinter, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, is a ∼17–20-kyr-old hot-spring deposit of opal-A mineralogy. It is interbedded with fluvial, lacustrine and volcaniclastic sediments, some silicified by infusing thermal waters. The exposed sinter (∼4 m thick, 90 m long) was truncated at its southern margin by a landslide, which deposited a conglomerate (up to 2 m thick, 56 m long) of sinter blocks and associated strata nearby. Kaolinite-rich cobbles at the base of the conglomerate indicate a change in the thermal regime and its probable trigger: acid steamcondensate produced alteration. Clasts in the landslide are oriented SW, the same direction as flattened plant reeds entombed in sinter, and as intercalated fluvial beds. Thus, thermal waters, stream flow and the landslide all likely followed the same palaeo-valley, which is similar in terrain and stratigraphy to the Devonian Rhynie hydrothermal system. The plant-rich, layered, in situ sinter contains fossilised microbes and rare stromatolites, and was deposited on mid- to distal slopes adjacent to marshes. Ash falls, fluvial activity and ponding occurred during and after the thermal activity. Unsilicified tephric Ohakea loess (∼26–17 kyr BP) and Taupo Tephra (1·86 kyr BP) blanket both sinter and landslide. Today, the deposits form resistant remnants in a topographically inverted landscape.

Heterotetrameric adaptor protein (AP) complexes play key roles in protein sorting and transport vesicle formation in the endomembrane system of eukaryotic cells. One of these complexes, AP-4, was identified over 20 years ago but, up until recently, its function remained unclear. AP-4 associates with the trans-Golgi network (TGN) through interaction with small GTPases of the ARF family and recognizes transmembrane proteins (i.e. cargos) having specific sorting signals in their cytosolic domains. Recent studies identified accessory proteins (tepsin, RUSC2 and the FHF complex) that co-operate with AP-4, and cargos (amyloid precursor protein, ATG9A and SERINC3/5) that are exported from the TGN in an AP-4-dependent manner. Defective export of ATG9A from the TGN in AP-4-deficient cells was shown to reduce ATG9A delivery to pre-autophagosomal structures, impairing autophagosome formation and/or maturation. In addition, mutations in AP-4-subunit genes were found to cause neurological dysfunction in mice and a form of complicated hereditary spastic paraplegia referred to as ‘AP-4-deficiency syndrome’ in humans. These findings demonstrated that mammalian AP-4 is required for the development and function of the central nervous system, possibly through its role in the sorting of ATG9A for the maintenance of autophagic homeostasis. In this article, we review the properties and functions of AP-4, and discuss how they might explain the clinical features of AP-4 deficiency.

AbstractA persistent challenge for minority candidates is mitigating negative effects attributed to their unpopular group identity. This was precisely the case for Mitt Romney, a Mormon, as he sought and captured the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. We draw on existing public opinion data about the tepid reaction to Romney's Mormonism from within Republican ranks. Then, we review our own experimental data to examine a potential mitigation strategy, “God Talk,” and its emotional costs to the GOP. We find that Romney and similar candidates may avoid direct penalty by party rank-and-file for their minority attributes when using God Talk, but the associated affective response supporters direct at their party may carry yet-unknown putative costs for both party and candidate.

Transanal irrigation (TAI) has been receiving increasing attention and acceptance in recent years as a treatment option for bowel dysfunction, including chronic constipation, faecal incontinence, neurogenic bowel disorders and lower anterior resection syndrome. TAI involves the instillation of tepid water into the bowel via a rectal catheter or cone to achieve a controlled bowel cleanout. This article addresses the competencies that health professionals require to use TAI. Prior to instigating TAI, these include how to undertake an adequate bowel assessment; understand the risks and complications associated with TAI; and select the equipment most suitable for an individual's bowel symptoms. The professional must also be able to instruct the user in how to safely perform the procedure; discuss contra-indications and cautions; and collect outcome measures, including reasons for discontinuation.

The Tepsi ultrabasic body is located in the northeastern Fennoscandian Shield close to the junction of the Serpentinite Belt–Tulppio Belt (SB–TB) with suites of the Lapland–Belomorian Belt (LBB) of Paleoproterozoic age. The body is a deformed laccolith that has tectonic contacts with Archean rocks. Its primary textures and magmatic parageneses are widely preserved. Fine-grained olivine varies continuously from Fo90.5 to Fo65.4. The whole-rock variations in MgO, Fe2O3, SiO2, and other geochemical data are also indicative of a significant extent of differentiation. Compositional variations were examined in the grains of calcic and Mg-Fe amphiboles, clinochlore, micas, plagioclase, members of the chromite–magnetite series, ilmenite, apatite, pentlandite, and a number of other minor mineral species. Low-sulfide disseminated Ni-Cu-Co mineralization occurred sporadically, with the presence of species enriched in As or Bi, submicrometric grains rich in Pt and Ir, or diffuse zones in pentlandite enriched in (Pd + Bi). We recognize two series: the pentlandite series (up to 2.5–3 wt.% Co) and the cobaltpentlandite series (~1 to ~8 apfu Co). The latter accompanied serpentinization. The two series display differences in their substitutions: Ni ↔ Fe and Co → (Ni + Fe), respectively. Relative enrichments in H2O, Cl, and F, observed in grains of apatite (plus high contents of Cl in hibbingite or parahibbingite), point to the abundance of volatiles accumulated during differentiation. We provide the first documentation of scheelite grains in ultrabasic rocks, found in evolved olivine-rich rocks (Fo77–72). We also describe unusual occurrences of hypermagnesian clinopyroxene associated with tremolite and serpentine. Abundant clusters of crystallites of diopside display a microspinifex texture. They likely predated serpentinization and formed due to rapid crystallization in a differentiated portion of a supercooled oxidized melt or, less likely, fluid, after bulk crystallization of the olivine. We infer that the laccolithic Tepsi body crystallized rapidly, in a shallow setting, and could thus not form megacycles in a layered series or produce a well-organized structure. Our findings point to the existence of elevated PGE-Au-Ag potential in numerous ultrabasic–basic complexes of the SB–TB–LBB megastructure.

Abstract Recent decades have seen increases in the variability of family income, tepid income growth rates for all but the richest families, and widening income inequality. These trends are concerning for child well-being, given the importance of income to parental investments and parenting practices. Growing evidence suggests that a high level of change is disruptive to family processes and that chronic stress affects physiology as well as psychology. This study used the Panel Study of Income Dynamics Child Development Supplement to estimate associations between three dimensions of childhood income dynamics—level, variability, and trend—and child achievement and behavior. After income level was controlled for, income variability during childhood was not associated with child achievement or behavior, but an increasing five-year trend in income-to-needs was modestly beneficial to behavior measures. Subgroup analysis suggests some adverse effects of income variability and trend on reading and behavior for non-White children but no clear patterns by child's age or family income or wealth levels.

Cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) is associated with fluid overload. We hypothesized that fluid gain during CPB could be reduced by substituting parts of a crystalloid prime with 7.2% hypertonic saline and 6% poly(O-2-hydroxyethyl) starch solution (HyperHaes®). 14 animals were randomized to a control group (Group C) or to Group H. CPB-prime in Group C was Ringer’s solution. In group H, 4 ml/kg of Ringer’s solution was replaced by the hypertonic saline / hydroxyethyl starch solution. After 60 min stabilization, CPB was initiated and continued for 120 min. All animals were allowed drifting of normal temperature (39.0°C) to about 35.0°C. Fluid was added to the CPB circuit as needed to maintain a 300-ml level in the venous reservoir. Blood chemistry, hemodynamic parameters, fluid balance, plasma volume, fluid extravasation rate (FER), tissue water content and acid-base parameters were measured/calculated. Total fluid need during 120 min CPB was reduced by 60% when hypertonic saline/hydroxyethyl starch solution was added to the CPB prime (p<0.01). The reduction was related to a lowered FER. The effect was most pronounced during the first 30 min on CPB, with 0.6 (0.43) (Group H) compared with 1.5 (0.40) ml/kg/min (Group C) (p<0.01). Hemodynamics and laboratory parameters were similar in both groups. Serum concentrations of sodium and chloride increased to maximum levels of 148 (1.5) and 112 (1.6) mmol/l in Group H. To conclude: addition of 7.2% hypertonic saline and 6% poly(O-2-hydroxyethyl) starch solution to crystalloid CPB prime reduces fluid needs and FER during tepid CPB.

Abstract Background: A highly positive intraoperative fluid balance should be prevented as it negatively impacts patient outcome. Analysis of volume-kinetics has identified an increase in interstitial fluid volume after crystalloid fluid loading during isoflurane anesthesia. Isoflurane has also been associated with postoperative hypoxemia and may be associated with an increase in alveolar epithelial permeability, edema formation, and hindered oxygen exchange. In this article, the authors compare fluid extravasation rates before and during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with isoflurane- versus propofol-based anesthesia. Methods: Fourteen pigs underwent 2 h of tepid CPB with propofol (P-group; n = 7) or isoflurane anesthesia (I-group; n = 7). Fluid requirements, plasma volume, colloid osmotic pressures in plasma and interstitial fluid, hematocrit levels, and total tissue water content were recorded, and fluid extravasation rates calculated. Results: Fluid extravasation rates increased in the I-group from the pre-CPB level of 0.27 (0.13) to 0.92 (0.36) ml·kg−1·min−1, but remained essentially unchanged in the P-group with significant between-group differences during CPB (pb = 0.002). The results are supported by corresponding changes in interstitial colloid osmotic pressure and total tissue water content. Conclusions: During CPB, isoflurane, in contrast to propofol, significantly contributes to a general increase in fluid shifts from the intravascular to the interstitial space with edema formation and a possible negative impact on postoperative organ function.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus considered an opportunistic pathogen, usually associated with nosocomial infections in immunocompromised patients. Among the infections caused, the most frequent are urinary tract infections, wound infections, pneumonia, and bacteremia. It has intrinsic and acquired resistance to antibiotics, due to the low permeability of its outer membrane, the overexpression of efflux pumps, and the production of enzymes that degrade the antibiotic. In this study, 61 samples of P. aeruginosa collected from the General Hospital “Dr. Aquiles Calles Ramírez" from the city of Tepic, which were phenotypically identified using the Vitek2 automated system. Subsequently, they were molecularly identified with the polymerase chain reaction technique, targeting the gyrB gene that codes for the B subunit of DNA gyrase. In 60 of the samples, amplification of the gyrB gene was obtained and only one, no amplification was observed. The results showed that infections caused by P. aeruginosa are more frequent in male patients, in age range of 41-60 years. Urine culture being the origin of the sample that most predominated. The sensitivity-resistance analysis to antibiotics showed that most of the strains are resistant to β-lactams, except for meropenem, which presented a high sensitivity in most of the strains, as well as in the case of ciprofloxacin, amikacin, and gentamicin.

The IKZF1 gene is formed by 8 exons and encodes IKAROS, a transcription factor that regulates the expression of genes that control cell cycle progression and cell survival. In general, 15-20% of the patients with preB acute lymphoblastic leukemia (preB ALL) harbor IKZF1 deletions, and the frequency of these deletions increases in BCR-ABL1 or Ph-like subgroups. These deletions have been associated with poor treatment response and the risk of relapse. The aim of this descriptive study was to determine the frequency of IKZF1 deletions and the success of an induction therapy response in Mexican pediatric patients diagnosed with preB ALL in 2 hospitals from 2017 to August 2018. Thirty-six bone marrow samples from patients at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría in Mexico City and the Centro Estatal de Cancerología in Tepic were analyzed. The IKZF1 deletion was identified by MLPA using the SALSA MLPA P335 ALL-IKZF1 probemix. Deletions of at least 1 IKZF1 exon were observed in 7/34 samples (20.6%): 3 with 1 exon deleted; 1 with 2 exons, 1 with 5 exons, 1 with 6 exons, and 1 patient with a complete IKZF1 deletion. This study was descriptive in nature; we calculated the frequency of the IKZF1 gene deletion in a Mexican pediatric population with preB ALL as 20.6%.

Fish are marketed as a food and consumed worldwide. During the production of food, contamination by microorganisms is possible through the air, soil, water, surfaces, food handlers, etc. The air does not have a natural microbial composition, but it is a vehicle for the transmission of microorganisms of economic and health interest because they are associated with food spoilage and human diseases. The objective of this study was the microbiological analysis of the air in an area popular for the processing and marketing of fish products in the city of Tepic Nayarit. Using the passive or sedimentation method to collect microorganisms present in the air, the proportion of aerobic mesophile bacteria, coliform bacteria, fungi and yeast was determined at different locations in the fish processing and marketing area for four weeks. The results indicated that the aerobic mesophiles had the highest counts among all the microbial groups analyzed at the twelve different sampling points during the four weeks of the study; their numbers ranged from 2.44 to 2.95 log CFU/m3/h, followed by molds with counts from 1.44 to 2.75 log CFU/m3/h, yeasts with counts from 0.7 to 2.01 log CFU/m3/h and coliforms with counts that ranged from 0.7 to 1.68 log CFU/m3/h. We determined the proportion of the viable microbiological population present in the air at the different sampling points of the study area; several of these sampling points presented values above those recommended by various agencies around the world. Knowledge of the biological hazards transported through the air is important to establish and reduce the risk to the health of occupants and the contamination pathways of processed and marketed fishery products that may be associated with spoilage and foodborne diseases.

Aim of study: To describe the common behaviour of flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) under rearing conditions. Area of study: Tepic, Mexico. Material and methods: Behaviours exhibited by mullets were videorecorded with submersible cameras installed inside of three tanks. A total of 690 min per day (07:30 - 18:30 h) were recorded per tank during a week. Afterwards, the different behaviours exhibited by juvenile M. cephalus were described, identified and characterized in an ethogram and grouped into two categories: a) locomotion, including three different observed behaviours (resting, swimming and fast swimming) and b) feeding, including three behaviours (surface feeding, bottom feeding and rubbing). Each of the behavioural variables were quantified. Main results: M. cephalus is a species with a constant locomotion associated to feeding, since fish showed continuous movement during most of day light period. On the contrary, fish exhibited reduced movement during dark periods. Mullets were observed to be a non-aggressive fish species under conditions of the present study, since the absence of dominance and aggression towards conspecifics was observed, which suggested a high predisposition for adaptation to captivity. Finally, behavioural frequencies of grey mullet juveniles were similar among the three tanks for most of the behavioural variables analysed (p>0.05) except for the variable bottom feeding (p=0.02). Research highlights: Results from this study could be of interest for the aquaculture industry to optimize rearing techniques and welfare for the production of grey mullet.

Renal fibrosis is a type of chronic kidney disease (CKD) induced by infiltration of inflammatory cells, myofibroblast accumulation, and ECM production in the kidney. From a long time ago, Corni Fructus (CF) is known to supplement the liver and kidney with its tepid properties. In this study, we investigated the renal protective mechanism of CF, which is known to supplement the kidney, in rat model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). After inducing UUO through surgery, the group was separated ( n = 8 ) and the drug was administered for 2 weeks; normal rats (normal), water-treated UUO rats (control), CF 100 mg/kg-treated UUO rats (CF100), and CF 200 mg/kg-treated UUO rats (CF200). As a result of histopathological examination of kidney tissue with H&E, MT, and PAS staining, it was confirmed that the infiltration of inflammatory cells and the erosion of collagen were relatively decreased in the kidneys treated with CF. Also, CF significantly reduced the levels of MDA and BUN in serum. As a result of confirming the expression of the factors through western blotting, CF treatment significantly reduced the expression of NADPH oxidase and significantly regulated the AMPK/LKB1/NF-κB pathway associated with inflammation. In addition, it downregulated the expression of major fibrotic signaling factors, such as α-SMA, collagen I, MMP-2, and TIMP-1, and significantly regulated the TGF-β1/Smad pathway, which is known as a major regulator of renal fibrosis. Taken together, these findings indicate that CF can alleviate renal fibrosis by regulating the TGF-β1/Smad pathway through inhibition of oxidative stress in UUO.

The ability to continuously manufacture products can be of huge benefit to industry as it can reduce waste and capital expenditure. Continuous crystallisation has received tepid interest for many years but has come to the fore recently as it holds the potential for a radical transformation in the way crystalline products are manufactured, leading to the development method being embraced by major industries such as pharmaceuticals. In addition to the financial benefits offered by continuous crystallisation over conventional batch methods, a higher level of control over the crystallisation process can also be achieved – allowing improved, more consistent particle attributes to be obtained in the crystallisation process. This control is in part a consequence of the smaller volumes involved in continuous crystallisation, which also has the advantage of reducing any hazards associated with the materials being processed. By using smaller volumes, the mixing efficacy is inherently increased which reduces any disparity between local environments, thereby allowing kinetics to dictate the nature of the products. The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation (CMAC [1]) in the UK is a collaborative national initiative to further the knowledge base and understanding of all aspects relating to continuous crystallisation and its use in the manufacturing of crystalline particulate products. In this work we present the design and construction of a novel continuous crystalliser and its evaluation using various model systems such as calcium carbonate (polymorph control [2]) and Bourne reactions (mixing efficacy [3]). The crystalliser will then be used in the co-crystallisation of agrichemical and pharmaceutical compounds with co-formers in an effort to optimise the solid-state properties of these materials such as solubility. Various aspects of the evaluation of the design of the new crystalliser will be presented with reference to these trials, and assessed critically with respect to evolution of this design and potential implementation in manufacturing processes.

The case study presented underscores the importance of early identification of metabolic risks, effective management, and lifestyle modifications in preventing clinical complications associated with cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). The individual in the study, a South Asian immigrant, experienced the development of essential hypertension in his mid-50s, leading to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and mild diastolic dysfunction. However, through proactive measures such as early diagnosis of metabolic risks, robust management of cardiovascular disease (CVD), adherence to a heart-healthy diet, and lifestyle changes, he was able to avoid major clinical complications of diabetes and maintain overall well-being until the age of 87. The key takeaways from this case study align with broader public health initiatives aimed at addressing the global epidemic of metabolic diseases. The multifaceted and intricate nature of this problem requires a comprehensive approach that considers various factors contributing to the rising prevalence of these diseases. Primary prevention strategies, which focus on identifying and mitigating risk factors for CMDs before the onset of vascular disease, play a crucial role in curbing the epidemic. The success observed in this case study, highlights the potential impact of proactive management and lifestyle interventions, in preventing and mitigating the progression of cardiometabolic diseases. It emphasizes the need for increased awareness, early screening, and ongoing monitoring of individuals at risk. Additionally, promoting heart-healthy diets and encouraging lifestyle modifications, such as regular physical activity and stress reduction, are essential components of a holistic approach to cardiometabolic health. Despite the positive outcomes demonstrated in this case, the article acknowledges that the global response to preventing both communicable and non-communicable diseases has been tepid, with varying levels of enthusiasm for developing primary prevention strategies across different nations. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated efforts at the individual, community, and policy levels to promote a culture of preventive healthcare. In conclusion, the findings of this case study contribute to the growing body of evidence supporting the efficacy of early diagnosis of metabolic risks, effective management, and lifestyle modifications in preventing clinical complications associated with cardiometabolic diseases. The lessons learned from individual cases can inform broader public health initiatives and underscore the importance of a proactive and comprehensive approach to address the escalating prevalence of metabolic diseases globally

Geothermal springs are natural geological phenomena that occur throughout the world. South Africa is blessed with several springs of this nature. Limpopo province contains 31% of all geothermal springs in the country. The springs are classified according to the residing mountain: Soutpansberg, Waterberg and Drakensberg. This study focused on the geothermal springs within the Soutpansberg region; that is, Mphephu, Siloam, Sagole and Tshipise. The study was aimed at assessing the occurrence and potential health risk associated with drinking water from geothermal springs within Soutpansberg. Geothermal springs and boreholes were sampled for a period of 12 months (May 2017–May 2018) to accommodate two major seasons in the study areas. The physicochemical and trace metal compositions of the geothermal springs and boreholes (tepid and hot) were analyzed using ion chromatography (IC) (Dionex Model DX 500) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Trace metal concentrations of the geothermal springs and boreholes were within permissible drinking water guidelines by the South African National Standards (SANS) and World Health Organisation (WHO), with exception of mercury (Hg), which is high in summer season. The bioaccumulation from regular consumption could, however, result in negative effects. Pearson’s correlation revealed that there is a direct relationship between temperature and pH, and some of the trace metals (V, Zn, Hg, Pb). This implies dissolution of minerals (rock-water interaction) under slightly high temperature. Multivariate statistics further elucidate the relationship and possible sources of the trace metals. Therefore, it can be inferred that the rock-water interaction is the main geochemical process governing the release of trace metals in groundwater. Hazard Index values for both children and adults were higher than 1, and this implies that the communities are at high risk of non-cancer health effects. Further, As, Cr and Cd were found to be the highest contributors to the potential cancer risk in the study areas, with children having a higher risk than adults. Therefore, there is a need for clinical/epidemiological study, and regular monitoring and control measures, to verify actual prevalence of cancer and protect human health, particularly the children, within the study areas.

Purpose: to determine the level of sensorimotor reactions of karateka of 10-13 years old. Material and methods. The following research methods were used in the present research: theoretical analysis and generalization of scientific and methodical literature; pedagogical supervision; psychophysiological measurements; mathematical and statistical methods of the research. The research was attended by karate juniors of the sports club «Centurion», Kharkiv, in the amount of 26 sportsmen who were divided into 2 groups of 13 people according to the age criterion. The first group of karateka is 10-11 years old, the second one is 12-13 years old. To determine the level of manifestation of sensorimotor reactions a complex of special programs for tablet computers under the control of iOS was used. The results of sensorimotor reactions of the athletes studied by the following tests were obtained: TestSTMemory (short-term visual memory); Visuomotor Choice Reaction (choice reactions); Reaction RMO (reactions to a moving object); TappingPro (number and duration of taps during the 1st minute). Results: the duration of a sensorimotor reaction is one of the neurophysiological indicators. It is the simplest, most accessible and at the same time very accurate neurophysiological indicator. It reflects the speed of neural processes and their switching, motor coordination, overall performance, and the dynamics of the central nervous system. The analysis of the study results showed that karateka aged 10-11 have 13 % less perceptual capacity than karateka aged 12-13. Older karateka were better at memorizing and passing tests faster because this cognitive activity is associated with memorizing the opponent's positions and differentiating hidden signals before motor actions. The choice reaction of older athletes is 26 % higher, which indicates that karateka aged 12-13 years have a more perfect control of the mechanism of movement. The reaction to a moving object in older athletes is 52 % more accurate. In the tapping test, older karateka made 11 % more taps due to their higher qualifications and physiological development. Statistically significant results were obtained in the Wilcoxon test – «Choice Reaction», «Short-term Visual Memory» and «Reaction to a Moving Object». The results of older athletes in the «Tepping Test» are better, but not statistically significant (p>0,05). The better results of older sportsmen in other tests are connected with the growth of the volume of special exercises, namely exercises with elements of martial arts. Conclusions. The above tests can be used in the training process of karateka for the definition of psychophysiological features, because according to the analysis and comparison of the received data in tests «Reaction of a choice», «Short-term visual memory» and «Reaction to a moving object» the senior karateka have statistically reliably better indicators than younger sportsmen (p<0,05). It is connected with the growth of the volume of special exercises in sportsmen of the senior group, namely exercises with elements of martial arts.

Abstract Abstract 1164 Introduction: Systemic corticosteroids, a common first-line treatment for chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), are known to be associated with an increased risk of cataracts. Feudjo-Tepie et al (2009) determined that the rate of cataracts was higher in patients treated with oral corticosteroids (14.0/1000 patient years [PYs] vs 6.0/1000 PY). Eltrombopag, an oral, nonpeptide thrombopoietin receptor agonist, is approved for the treatment of chronic ITP, a disease characterized by low platelet counts. Preclinical studies of eltrombopag in young rodents showed the potential for cataract development at doses ≥4 times the human clinical exposure. The potential for an association between treatment with eltrombopag and an increased risk for cataracts was assessed in 5 clinical trials in chronic ITP. Methods: Ocular data from 5 trials were analyzed: 2 placebo-controlled, 6-week studies, TRA100773A (phase 2) and TRA100773B (phase 3); a 6-month, placebo-controlled phase 3 study (RAISE); a phase 2 study with 3 intermittent treatment cycles of up to 6 weeks (REPEAT); and an ongoing extension study (EXTEND, data from June 2006-February 2010). Ocular monitoring included assessment of ocular health history and cataract risk factors such as chronic corticosteroid use, and a complete ophthalmologic exam, including assessment of the lens using the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) lens opacity grading protocol (AREDS Research Group, 2001). Ocular exams were performed at baseline, frequently during treatment, and 6 months following discontinuation of treatment. A Clinical Events Committee (CEC) composed of 3 external ophthalmologists was assembled to provide external medical review of the ocular data across the eltrombopag program. The CEC adjudicated the presence or absence of cataracts from treatment-blinded data and, where possible, made attributions of potential relatedness to study medication. Results: At baseline, 47/392 patients (12%) had pre-existing cataracts or were aphakic/pseudophakic. Across the trials, chronic corticosteroid use was the most commonly reported cataract risk factor, reported in 62% of patients with risk factor assessment. After CEC adjudication, in the two 6-week trials, 2/49 placebo-treated patients (4%) and 6/112 eltrombopag-treated patients (5%) had an incident cataract or progression of cataracts. All 8 patients reported prior use of corticosteroids, and 7/8 reported at least 1 risk factor for cataracts at their first ocular exam. In RAISE, 6/61 placebo-treated patients (10%) and 11/135 eltrombopag-treated patients (8%) had incident cataract or progression of cataracts. All 17 patients reported prior use of corticosteroids, identified as a risk factor at the baseline ocular exam. In REPEAT, the CEC identified 2/66 patients with potential cataract findings; given the additional risk factors in both patients, the CEC concluded there was no evidence of a drug-related increased risk of cataracts in the study. In the ongoing eltrombopag extension study, 25/299 patients (8%) had incident cataract or progression of cataracts. Twenty patients reported at least 1 cataract risk factor, and 24 patients had documented use of corticosteroids. The CEC noted variability in the AREDS lens grading, in which there was apparent progression followed by apparent regression to a lower, less severe grade on the AREDS scale. Conclusion: The CEC adjudication of the ocular data from the placebo-controlled eltrombopag studies in chronic ITP showed that a similar proportion of patients in the placebo- and eltrombopag-treatment groups had incident cataract or progression of cataracts. In the extension study, with patients exposed to eltrombopag for over 3 years, the proportion of patients with cataracts is similar to that observed in the placebo-controlled studies (despite the significant difference in exposure to eltrombopag). The noted variability in the AREDS lens grading reflects the inherent challenges for the clinician in implementing this scale in a consistent manner. Based upon the ocular data reviewed to date by the CEC, there is no evidence of an increased risk of cataract or cataract progression in chronic ITP patients treated with eltrombopag. The possibility of a relationship between eltrombopag and cataracts has not been completely excluded and is still being monitored in clinical trials. Disclosures: Cooper: GlaxoSmithKline: Honoraria. Abstract Herbivore-associated molecular patterns (HAMPs) enable plants to recognize herbivores and may help plants adjust their defense responses. Here, we report on herbivore-induced changes in a protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) widely distributed across arthropods. PDI from the spider mite Tetranychus evansi (TePDI), a mesophyll-feeding agricultural pest worldwide, triggered immunity in multiple Solanaceae plants. TePDI-mediated cell death in Nicotiana benthamiana required the plant signaling proteins SGT1 (suppressor of the G2 allele of skp1) and HSP90 (heat shock protein 90), but was suppressed by spider mite effectors Te28 and Te84. Moreover, PDIs from phylogenetically distinct herbivorous and non-herbivorous arthropods all triggered plant immunity. Finally, although PDI-induced plant defenses impaired the performance of spider mites on plants, RNAi experiments revealed that PDI genes are essential for the survival of mites and whiteflies. Our findings indicate that plants recognize evolutionarily conserved HAMPs to activate plant defense and resist pest damage, pointing to opportunities for broad-spectrum pest management.

At what point in the tepid recovery from the global financial crisis should the Fed take a major step in normalizing U.S. monetary policy by greatly reducing its holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds? Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke faced this question in Spring 2012, even as he was concerned that the U.S. economy was on weaker footing than many believed. Suitable for both core and elective MBA courses in global financial markets and international finance, this case examines the risks associated with a policy some would consider monetizing the budget deficit. Currently, there is a need to establish new territorial planning instruments focused on sustainable development. The simulation of spatial scenarios is an essential tool to evaluate different alternatives for urban planning. The objective of this work was to explore future urban growth through the analysis of landscape patterns and the economic quantification of ecosystem services of three prospective scenarios, simulated towards the horizon year 2045. Each scenario was formulated, based on the application of different socioeconomic, political and environmental development strategies whose actions have a direct impact on land-use changes. The starting point was an urban growth simulation model, based on Cellular Automata with Markov Chains (CA-Markov), developed from previous work for the study area. Three scenarios were constructed with the intention of showing the spatial characteristics of three different alternatives of the evolution of future urban growth and through them, quantify the economic value and the consequences that would occur in the territory due to the effect of the different decisions taken. Landscape metrics were applied to detect the spatial processes and patterns of urban growth for each of the simulated scenarios and, finally, the costs of ecosystem services associated with the loss or gain of territory (that each of the different land covers and land uses would contribute) were quantified. The three simulated scenarios revealed that the Tepic-Xalisco Metropolitan Zone (MZ) will be in a process of urban coalescence in the next 30 years; and that the path designed to move towards an Industrialisation Scenario (ES2-IN) estimates economic losses of more than $31 million dollars per year for the ecosystem services associated particularly with the reduction of forest cover.

Females had a shorter gestation time (2.47 weeks) than males. It was observed that at early ages there is a low prevalence of anemia related to the consumption of exclusive breastfeeding. The prevalence of anemia was 33.33% between 8 and 43 months. The supplement did not show changes in the hemoglobin level, possibly associated with lack of adherence The effective monitoring and characterization of the new social care programs is essential.

This research examines the films Turkey’s director, Emin Alper, created via the lens of the auteur concept and aims to explore common styles and inherent meanings within his creations. Initially, the auteur concept was introduced to distinguish elite directors from ordinary ones. However, it has progressed now to distinguish the directors who display technical competence, unique style, and inner meaning in their films. The role of a screenwriter is often associated with the auteur concept, given the prominence of the screenplay writing process in this theory. Emin Alper, who has directed and written four films in the last ten years, is an exceptional director whose work warrants scrutiny within the domain of auteur theory in Turkish Cinema. Throughout his films “Tepenin Ardı,” “Abluka,” “Kız Kardeşler,” and “Kurak Günler,” Alper incorporates characteristic features and internal meaning beneath the surface of the depicted events. Qualitative content analysis is utilized in this study to examine these features in Alper’s films based on the auteur theory criteria. An essential aspect of auteur theory is the director’s signature, namely their works’ distinctive styles and themes. Distinctive styles and themes were also identified in Alper’s films.

Introduction Low mean arterial pressure (MAP) periods occur frequently during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and their management remains controversial. Our aim was to correlate MAP during CPB with the occurrence of post-operative acute kidney injury (AKI), considering two different parameters: consecutive and cumulative low MAP periods. Methods Single-centre observational retrospective study including 250 patients submitted to non-emergent aortic valve replacement, with tepid to mild hypothermia (not below 32°C). The primary outcome was the occurrence of AKI. A propensity scored matching of 43 patients was used to adjust both populations (AKI and No AKI). MAP measures were automatically and continuously recorded during CPB. Low MAP periods were analysed employing two parameters: consecutive and the cumulative sum of time. Results Patients who experienced at least 5 min with MAP <50 mmHg had an increased risk of post-operative AKI (OR infinity; 95% CI, 1.47 to infinity; P = .026). The risk is also significant with MAP <40 mmHg (OR 2.78; 95% CI 1.1–6.9; = .044) and <30 mmHg (OR 3.36; 95% CI 1.2–9.2; P = .029). Post-operative AKI was associated with cumulative and consecutive periods of low MAP. Patients with periods of low MAP had higher levels of post-operative creatinine and reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Patients with AKI had prolonged endotracheal ventilation time, and ICU and ward lengths of stay. Conclusion Low MAP periods during CPB are associated with an increased occurrence of post-operative AKI, leading to 1) higher creatinine levels; 2) decreased GFR and 3) longer ICU and ward lengths of stay. Both consecutive and cumulative periods of low MAP are associated with an increased risk of AKI. MAP appears to be an important contributor to post-operative AKI and should be carefully managed during CPB. Further studies must address if MAP variations lead to definitive and long-term consequences.

Abstract The AORSA wave equation solver by Jaeger [E.F. Jaeger et al., Phys. Plasmas 8 (2001) 1573] solves the integro-differential wave equation relevant for the radio frequency (RF) domain and for fusion-relevant conditions in tokamaks or stellarators, retaining all finite Larmor radius corrections by substituting the continuous Fourier integrals by a sum over a discrete set of modes. Its strength is also its weakness: the simplicity of the method results in significant computational effort, a full matrix needing to be inverted to solve the associated linear system. Based on the notion that modes are gradually more independent if their eigenvalues differ, the present paper proposes a straightforward numerical method to partly alleviate this need, allowing to substitute the full system matrix by a banded one. The adopted method can be applied to a wide variety of equations. A few 1D examples - of relevance for solving the wave equation in the RF domain of frequencies - are provided: the tunneling equation is used to illustrate the potential of the method, and the all-FLR wave equation (retaining all Finite Larmor Radius corrections in the dielectric response) adopted by Jaeger is solved comparing the solutions found to those based on simpler models (a cold plasma and a "tepid plasma" - i.e. a kinetic model truncated at zero order in Larmor radius - description).

A suitable combination of magnetic field determinations is assembled in the whole area of the Jalisco block in central-western Mexico; it serves as the basis for calculations of the Curie Point Isotherm by means of Spectral Analysis. The Jalisco block contains numerous volcanic manifestations; an attempt is made at correlating the Curie Isotherm (CI) with volcanic manifestations and its implicit risk to nearby populated regions. A preliminary analysis of this isotherm is carried out using areas of 60 × 60 km2, where the volcanic regions at the NW and SE portions of the Tepic-Zacoalco (T-Z) rift coincide with shallow layers of the CI. Results show an unexpected region in the middle of the T-Z rift, where the isotherm deepens to 12 km depth and volcanism appears to be missing. The authors argue that this phenomenon may be associated with a flare up episode occurring at 5-3 Ma along the rift. Varying the area used for the calculation of the CI, from 30 × 30 km2 to 120 × 120 km2, illustrates how the concomitant changes in volume affect the depth of penetration. The authors find exceptional regions in which the CI shows shallow depths at all area sizes used in the calculations; this consistency is interpreted as a magnetic alteration of the crust originating at mid-crustal depths. These regions also correspond to high values of the Bouguer anomaly reported elsewhere. Six magneto-stratigraphic profiles are presented for the results of the 60 × 60 km2 calculations, where geologic, topographic, and magnetic properties are displayed along their length.

The boundary between the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMO) and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) is well exposed along the Santiago River, on the border of the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. This region includes a polydeformed belt produced by the relative motion between the Jalisco Block and the SMO, here defined as the “Rio Santiago Shear Zone” (RSSZ). In this work, we present detailed geological cartography, petrographic descriptions, and new zircon U-Pb ages that allow us to establish the stratigraphy of the region surrounding the RSSZ, providing temporal constraints to its tectonic evolution. In the mapped area, the base of the SMO stratigraphic column consists of a succession of massive andesitic lava flows intruded by felsic dikes and a felsic subvolcanic body of 27.5 and 27.2 Ma, and it is covered by a series of ignimbrites of 26.8 and 25.3 Ma. A red beds succession separates a second package of ignimbrites of ∼20-19 Ma, in turn capped by rhyolitic lava domes of 19.7 and 18.6 Ma and a rhyodacitic lava flows of 15.6 Ma, this Miocene succession is also intruded by a felsic body of 18.3 Ma west of the La Yesca dam. The SMO succession is covered by rocks belonging to the bimodal volcanism of the TMVB, emplaced between the end of the Miocene and the Pleistocene. The RSSZ developed through several deformation phases that occurred since the end of the Oligocene. The Oligocene succession of the SMO is affected by NE-SW and WNW-ESE trending lateral faults, NW-SE open folds and WNW-ESE and E-W trending reverse oblique faults. Some of the reverse oblique faults were later reactivated as normal faults. WNW-ESE trending normal faults associated with the Tepic-Zacoalco Rift affected the area south of the Santiago River during the Pliocene and Pleistocene. Normal faulting produced an accumulated vertical offset up to 700 m between the northern and southern regions of the Santiago River.

Background: Fever of either low or high-grade is a big concern when present in the pediatric age group; it is much more worrisome if children are younger than 5 years of age. Fever can subside on its own or with the help of simple remedies and or medications. However, some children will develop seizures when they have a fever. Febrile seizures are one of the most common presenting complaints seen in pediatric patients in emergency room visits and physician consult. Two different types of seizures are seen in children, simple and complex seizures. Simple febrile seizures are non harming and self-limiting, while, complex seizures are prone to have long-term side effects on children. Febrile seizures can occur with or without a source of an underlying cause. In this study, we aimed to identify physicians’ opinions, knowledge, and suggestions to improve guidelines on current treatment trends for fever and fever’s association with febrile seizures in children less than 5 years of age. Objectives: To determine physicians’ opinion knowledge, and suggestions to improve guidelines on current treatment trends for fever and fever’s association with febrile seizures in children less than 5 years of age. Methods: A cross-sectional study plan was designed and conducted in June - July 2021 involving general physicians and pediatricians (n = 600). The questionnaire form including 15 closed-end questions was distributed to physicians. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Results: 100% of physicians prescribed antipyretics to control fever and or to prevent complications, especially febrile seizures. All participants were aware that axillary temperature of > 37.2 ° C is defined as fever. All most all, general physicians and most pediatricians used antipyretics to treat other associated symptoms and signs, even when the fever was absent. 76.3% believed that high fever might be an indicator of underlying serious occult bacterial infection. Almost all physicians (91.3%) advised parents to switch to the use of alternate medication when the fevers did not subside after initial treatment with paracetamol; everyone recommended that non-medical supportive treatments like tepid sponging along with antipyretics and ibuprofen to reduce the fever soonest possible. 68% of pediatricians and 90% of general practitioners believe that febrile seizures will cause brain damage. 74% of general practitioners preferred to refer children immediately to specialty centers, for further management of seizures. However, Pediatricians at tertiary care centers, as well as those in private practice used diazepam or lorazepam. Conclusion: Differences are negligible between general physicians and pediatricians while managing fever and fever complications including febrile seizures. Irrespective of the knowledge, awareness and the availability of fever guidelines by many national and international organizations, physicians are leaning towards child and parents comfort in treatment fever. The gap is wider in general physicians’ preparedness than pediatricians. A considerable gap exists to improve physicians' approach, diagnosis, and management of fever in the pediatric population.
