The monograph presents the author's concept of information modeling of the world based on navigation — orientation and movement. The concept establishes links between the spatial and temporal dynamics of the Earth's nature, human evolution and the formation of geocultural space. It is shown that the construction of ancient labyrinths, petroglyphs, and stone sculptures allows them to perform the functions of a gnomon and a sundial, and the mythopoeic plots reflect elements of the celestial sphere. The theoretical foundations, methods and typical examples of studies of prehistoric objects of navigation purpose are considered. It is intended for specialists and students in the fields of cultural geography and tourism, archeology, anthropology, ethnography, semiotics, philology and philosophy, as well as for a wide range of readers interested in new research results on the prehistoric origins of modern culture.

The Erasmus programme is one of the outstanding Community initiatives, even if it is spoken little of outside the world of the university. This book, one of the first devoted to the subject, analyses the virtuous effects that the programme has had on the university system, the geography of student flows, and the motivations and propositions of those who have taken part in it. The reports of the students indicate the Erasmus as a 'bubble of experience' and the book explores these inner experiences through a sociological approach, illustrating the vast potential in terms of the moulding of a 'homo novus Europaeus'. The data gathered prompt a reflection on the redefinition of the role of the student when he or she directly experiences the comparison with a context different and distant from that of origin, to which he or she is nevertheless destined to return. From this perspective, the Erasmus experience assumes the significance of a sort of temporary upheaval of status open to forms of 'experimentation of identity'.

Greek and Roman stories of origin, or aetia, provide a fascinating window onto ancient conceptions of time. Aetia, which pervade ancient literature at all its stages, are inherently about time: they connect the past with the present by telling us which aspects of the past survive “even now” or “ever since then”. Yet while the standard aetiological formulae remain surprisingly stable over time, the understanding of time that lies behind stories of origin undergoes profound changes. By studying a broad range of texts and by closely examining select stories of origin from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, Augustan Rome, and early Christian literature, this book traces the changing forms of stories of origin and the underlying changing attitudes to time: to the interaction of the time of gods and men, to historical time, to change and continuity, as well as to a time beyond the present one. The book provides a model of how to analyse the temporal construction of aetia, by combining close attention to detail with a view towards the larger temporal agenda of each work. In the process, the book provides new insights both into some of the best-known aetiological works of antiquity (e.g. by Hesiod, Callimachus, Vergil, Ovid) and lesser-known ones (e.g. Ephorus, Prudentius, Orosius). Aetia, it is shown, do not merely convey factual information about the continuity of the past, but they implicate the present in ever new complex messages about time.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most frequent type of epilepsy of focal origin in adults. Electroencephalographic evaluation for surgical treatment requires accurate localization of epileptic foci. The yield of detection with scalp electrodes depends on three variables: source and extent of the epileptogenic area relative to the scalp electrodes’ position; electric field generated by the epileptiform activity and the electric vectors’ orientation; and extent of propagation of the epileptiform activity from mesial to temporal lateral regions. Recordings of epileptiform activity of presumed mesial-temporal origin should include additional electrodes such as anterior temporal or basal temporal electrodes or a subtemporal chain. Nasopharyngeal electrodes appear to yield no advantage over anterior temporal or basal temporal electrodes or a subtemporal chain and are associated with discomfort. Sphenoidal electrodes should be considered in special circumstances; reliability is improved if placed under fluoroscopy. High-density scalp recordings allow for even greater resolution and improved spatial sampling.

This chapter deals with the origin and the development of the functional use of the predicate versprechen ‘promise’ in the history of German. Synchronically, it illustrates that versprechen can be used in two different ways in Present-Day German: either as a lexical verbal head or as a functional verbal head. It also demonstrates to what extent these uses differ and accounts for where these differences come from. Diachronically, it shows that versprechen grammaticalized into a prospective aspect marker in Early New High German (1350–1650), and illustrates that grammaticalization is upward and leftward in the syntactic structure. Accordingly, it is argued that versprechen as a functional verbal head first started embedding DP complements and, as time went on, extended its usage to select infinitives as well, giving rise to a subject-to-subject raising analysis.

This chapter illustrates mythic and ritual productions of time. Ritual produces regularities that are coordinated by clocks and calendars. Two basic ways of producing religious time, ancestral and mythic, represent different constructions of temporal continuity. Ancestral time, relying on memory, establishes continuity between human generations. Mythic time, transmitted in narratives of origin and destiny, establishes continuity through underlying moral, legal, or forensic relations between actions and consequences. While establishing temporal continuity, mythic time can also signal temporal ruptures in a past crisis, a present conflict, or a future apocalypse. Ritual practices and mythic narratives generate religious time, but religious timing is also crucial in other spheres of human activity, such as politics, economics, and aesthetics. Religious time, therefore, is not only or merely religious. With its regularities and regulations, its ancestral and mythic constructions of continuity, religious time is also embedded in the aesthetics, economics, and politics of time.

The problem with the definition of inertia was solved, in the simple case of free point particles, by Tait, who introduced the concept of inertial frame. Tait’s solution would have satisfied Leibniz’ request that inertia be determined dynamically, however it only works in the absence of interactions between the material bodies. Later Mach posed again the question of the origin of inertia, suggesting the idea that it should be dynamical, which was later dubbed ‘Mach’s principle’. Moreover Mach criticized also Newton’s absolute time, and introduced the basic idea of temporal relationalism, i.e. that time should be a concept that is abstracted from change and has no independent existence. This idea is at the basis of SD and many other relational approaches to physics. This chapter concludes with the Barbour–Bertotti formulation of Mach’s principle, which they called ‘Mach–Poincaré Principle’. This formulation removes the vagueness of Mach’s original idea, and puts the principle into a precise mathematical form, which is one of the basic axioms of SD.

The conclusion provides a summary of the central arguments of the book concerning time in the blues and, specifically, the temporal fields explored in the analysis. A defense of the archive covered in the analyses—the inclusive and capacious understanding of the blues as a genre—asserts the interconnection between the historical context of origin and aesthetic production. The book concludes with a consideration of how sympathy enters into music reception, raising the possibility of an ethical dimension to listening to the blues.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has begun to narrow down the neural correlates of self-generated forms of thought, with current evidence pointing toward central roles for the default, frontoparietal, and visual networks. Recent work has linked the arising of thoughts more specifically to default network activity, but the limited temporal resolution of fMRI has precluded more detailed conclusions about where in the brain self-created mental content is generated and how this is achieved. This chapter argues that the unparalleled spatiotemporal resolution of intracranial electrophysiology (iEEG) in human epilepsy patients can begin to provide answers to questions about the specific neural origins of self-generated thought. The chapter reviews the extensive body of literature from iEEG studies over the past few decades and shows that many studies involving passive recording or direct electrical stimulation throughout the brain point to the medial temporal lobe as a key site of thought-generation.

The Oxford Handbook of Historical Institutionalismoffers an authoritative and accessible state-of-the-art analysis of the historical institutionalism research tradition in Political Science. Devoted to the study of how temporal processes and events influence the origin and transformation of institutions that govern political and economic relations, historical institutionalism has grown considerably since the mid-1990s. With its attention to past, present, and potential future contributions to the research tradition, the volume represents an essential reference point for those interested in historical institutionalism. Written in accessible style by leading scholars, 38 chapters detail the contributions of historical institutionalism to an expanding array of topics in the study of comparative, American, European, and international politics .

Scaling appears practically everywhere in science; it basically quantifies how the properties or shapes of an object change with the scale of the object. Scaling laws are always associated with power laws. The scaling object can be a function, a structure, a physical law, or a distribution function that describes the statistics of a system or a temporal process. We focus on scaling laws that appear in the statistical description of stochastic complex systems, where scaling appears in the distribution functions of observable quantities of dynamical systems or processes. The distribution functions exhibit power laws, approximate power laws, or fat-tailed distributions. Understanding their origin and how power law exponents can be related to the particular nature of a system, is one of the aims of the book.We comment on fitting power laws.

This chapter argues that Origen’s purity discourse was innovative on many fronts, as can be seen in his writings on sexuality, baptism, and on dietary issues. Defilement imagery concerning sexuality is especially prominent. Although Origen did not prohibit marriage, he saw sexuality as defiled, the quintessential expression of human corporeality, closely connected with sin though not synonymous with it. I argue that Origen was the first Christian thinker who integrated the notion of temporary sexual defilement found in the Hebrew Bible with the second-century Christian notion of essential sexual defilement, creating a nuanced conception of defilement. As in sexual issues, in baptism too Origen supplies a relatively systematic usage of purity discourse; baptism and sex are linked through his understanding of infant baptism as purification from an inherent defilement linked to the sexual origin of the human body.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Most Geographic Information Systems started as a substitute for loose paper maps. These paper maps did not have a built-in time dimension and could only represent history indirectly as a sequence of physically separate images. This was in fact imitated by these first generation systems. The time dimension could only be represented by means of separate files. A minority of Geographic Information Systems however, started their life as a substitute for ordered lists and tables with a link to paper maps. In these lists, the inclusion of a time com-ponent in the form of a data field was quite usual. This method too was copied by the systems that replaced these paper tables. The current trend in the development of Geographic Information Systems is towards the inte-gration of the classical map-oriented concepts with the table-oriented concepts. This often leads to the explicit embedding of the time component in the GIS environment. The Subcommission Geo-Information Models of the Netherlands Geodetic Commission has organized a workshop to discuss the theory and practice of time and history in GIS on 18 May 2000. This publication contains 6 articles prepared for the workshop. The first paper, written by Donna Peuquet, gives a bird’s-eye view of the current state of the art in spatio-temporal database technology and methodology. She is a well-known expert in the field of spatio-temporal information systems and the author of many articles in this field. The second article is written by Monica Wachowicz. She describes what you can do with a GIS once it contains a historical dimension and how you can detect changes in geographic phenomena. Furthermore, her article suggests how geographic visualisation and knowledge discovery techniques can be integrated in a spatio-temporal database. How to record the time dimension in a database is one thing, how to show this dimension to users is another one. In his contribution, Menno-Jan Kraak first tells about the techniques, which were used in the age of paper maps and the limitations these methods had. He goes on to explain what kind of cartographic techniques have been developed since the mass introduc-tion of the computer. Finally he describes the powerful animation methods which currently exist and can be used on CD-ROM and Internet applications. Peter van Oosterom describes how the time dimension is represented in the information sys-tems of the Cadastre and how this is used to publish updates. The Cadastre has a very long tradition in incorporating the time component, which has always been an inherent component of the cadastral registration. In former times this was translated in very precise procedures about how to update the paper maps and registers. Today it is translated in spatio-temporal database design. The article of Luc Heres tells about the time component in the National Road Database, origi-nally designed for traffic accident registration. This is one of the systems with ''table'' roots and with quite a long tradition in handling the time dimension. He elucidates first the core objects in the conceptual model and how time is added. Next, how this model is translated in a logical design and finally how this is technically implemented. Geologists and geophysicians also have a respectable tradition in handling the time dimension in the data they collect. This is illustrated in the last paper, which is written by Ipo Ritsema. He outlines how time is handled in geological and geophysical databases maintained by TNO. By means of some practical cases he illustrates which problems can be encountered and how these can be solved.

Is, as Hamlet once complained, time out of joint? Have the ways we understand the past and the future—and their relationship to the present—been reordered? The past, it seems, has returned with a vengeance: as aggressive nostalgia, as traumatic memory, or as atavistic origin narratives rooted in nation, race, or tribe. The future, meanwhile, has lost its utopian glamor, with the belief in progress and hope for a better future eroded by fears of ecological collapse. This book argues that the apparently solid moorings of our temporal orientation have collapsed within the span of a generation. To understand this profound cultural crisis, the book reconstructs the rise and fall of what it calls “time regime of modernity” that underpins notions of modernization and progress, a shared understanding that is now under threat. It assesses the deep change in the temporality of modern Western culture as it relates to our historical experience, historical theory, and our life-world of shared experience, explaining what we have both gained and lost during this profound transformation.

Historical institutionalism has steadily expanded its empirical scope and refined its analytical toolbox since it crystallized as a tradition of political analysis during the “new institutionalisms” debate. This chapter details the origins and evolution of historical institutionalism, placing particular emphases on the temporal concepts that inform its analytical toolbox. It begins with a discussion of historical institutionalims’s evolving relationship with other varieties of institutional analysis, before debating temporal concepts such as critical junctures, path dependence, intercurrence, and modes of gradual change. A third section identifies analytical, methodological, and empirical areas of potential growth.

This study interrogates the Boxing Day holiday which is globally celebrated on December 26. Although it is a long standing bank holiday for members of the British Commonwealth of Nations, no monograph exists attesting to its origin, especially as longstanding cultural holiday in the Protestant circum-Caribbean Basin. After historicizing its connection to ancient festivals and Catholicism, Jerrilyn McGregory explores how the Anglicized Caribbean World constitutes a gombe-complex marked by the privileging African-based rhythms and drums. McGregory considers Bermuda’s Gombey dancers, Bahamian Junkanoo, Garifuna Jankunú, Trinidadian style Carnivals in St. Croix and St. Kitts, and even a North Florida Shooting Match with semblances to these Caribbean festival arts. Ultimately, McGregory argues for an interpretive approach to deconstruct the vernacular tropes: “one grand noise”, “Foreday morning”, and “from back-o-town.” Therefore, rather than an island-by-island interrogation, this study will illuminate cultural resonances antithetical to hegemonic rule noise, darkness, and temporal-spatiality. While the cultural producers adhere to variant historical contexts, all function as forms of persistence and resistance. In the final analysis, McGregory documents the move from the simply carnivalesque to the ritualesque with the insinuation of their offspring to ensure continuity without fixity to ward off the threat of cultural tourism.

Accessibility has many facets. This study focuses on accessibility involving people’s travel, or to be more precise, on the ability to cover the distance from point A (origin) to point B (destination). Accessibility thus defined has its: (1) components (i.e. transport, land-use, individual and temporal components), (2) dimensions (i.e. travel origin and destination, distance decay, restrictions, barriers, mode of transport, extent of study area, socioeconomic and territorial cohesion, and dynamics) and (3) attributes (i.e. affordability, availability, nodal accessibility, and acceptability). The components, dimensions and attributes combine to form the world of accessibility. After having been a subject of academic writing for decades, that world has finally received its own comprehensive volume by Polish author. The book covers its topic in seven chapters. It begins with an introduction, which lays down the objectives and structure of the study and is followed by a chapter covering the definition of accessibility. Chapter 3 is devoted to the methodology of accessibility research. The fourth and longest chapter offers a review of the most important areas of the world of accessibility built around the four components and the dimensions of accessibility. Chapter 5 focuses on the attributes of accessibility, transport exclusion and access equality. Chapter 6 presents the basics of the authors’ own new model of four accessibility factors (network, spatial, travel and individual) developed in the form of a NeST box model. The volume ends with a review of the major threads and considerations of accessibility research in the immediate future, namely: (1) Big Data; (2) distance decay; (3) external spatial effects; (4) sensitivity, criticality and exposure; (5) development of new forms of transport; (6) affordability and equality; (7) long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic; (8) comparative analyses and evaluation using accessibility indices.

Historical institutionalism offers original ways of thinking about the origins, evolution, and consequences of political institutions—including, international order. This chapter argues that a “rise and decline” theory of international order based solely on the distribution of power is inadequate. The idea that leading states periodically have found themselves in a position to build or at least shape international order is not in dispute. But the explanation for the variations in the character of orders depends on more than simply the presence of a powerful lead state. Moments of opportunity for order building open up and close. The character of the state that finds itself with the opportunity to build order also matters. Employing insights from historical institutionalism, this chapter directs attention to the temporal dynamics that shape international orders, including the timing and sequence of past events that set the stage for subsequent struggles over political institutions.

This chapter is limited to a brief discussion of a sense of self, based on points that relate to the neural mechanisms discussed in previous chapters, in order to illustrate some important differences between the standard view and the integrative sensorimotor view of the self. I will treat the sense of self as produced by a temporal sequence of related perceptions that lead to ‘unconscious conclusions’ about the self. I shall address two major questions: (1) does our ability to anticipate our own actions contribute to a sense of self? Providing a clear ‘yes’. (2) Is our sense of self limited to the boundaries of our own bodies, and to the neural signals we receive from them? Providing a clear ‘no’. I will briefly address our sense of the self as agent, recognizing that this extends significantly beyond the content of this book.

Gregory is often treated in Western scholarship as a norm of orthodoxy, notwithstanding the reservations of his Eastern co-religionists; in his Commentary on the Song of Songs he certainly gave currency to a form of mysticism. In recent years his admirers have protested that this work is too often read as an echo of Origen’s lucubrations on the same text. Since Origen still has the reputation of being more a Platonist than a Christian, the virtue of Gregory is supposed to lie in his rediscovery of the body as an integral part of the person, in accordance with Pauline teaching and in contrast to the philosophy which disparages it as a temporary vehicle of the soul. A closer examination of both authors suggests, if anything, that Gregory is the Platonist, at least if this term is taken to connote an indifference to history and a lower valuation of the written text as a medium of instruction.

The Oxford Handbook of Slavery in the Americas offers authoritative articles on the history and historiography of the institution of slavery in the New World. With articles on colonial and antebellum America, Brazil, the Caribbean, the Indies, and South America, this book has impressive geographic and temporal coverage. It also includes a generous range of thematic articles on comparative slavery, the economics of slavery, and historical methodology in the field, slavery, and the law, for instance. While obviously indebted to the foundational works of the 1960s and 1970s, current writing on the history of slavery and forms of un-free labour in the Americas has taken decidedly original, new, often ingenious turns. A younger generation of scholars has shown a healthy respect for that tradition while posing new, often interdisciplinary, and theoretically informed questions, considering, for example, the nature and definition of slave resistance in the Americas, evolving meanings of gender and race under slavery, the complicated nature of class formation in un-free societies, the elaboration of proslavery and antislavery ideologies, the origins and subsequent elaboration of race-based slavery, and mechanisms of emancipation.

This chapter examines Marsiglio of Padua's political theory, tracing it to his opposition to the pope's interference in secular political affairs, especially Italy and the Holy Roman Empire. Marsiglio formulates theoretical principles to explain the origins and nature of the political community that depend upon a strict distinction between the temporal and spiritual realms. For Marsiglio, government and law exist in order to support the civil peace. After providing a short biography of Marsiglio, the chapter analyses his views on peace, conciliarism, consent, and ecclesiology. It also considers Marsiglio's claim that all secular governments should oppose the ecclesiastical hierarchy, that political society arises from infirmities of human nature, and that citizenship derives from all vital functions in society.

The myriad theonyms preserved in inscriptions reflect the diversity of Roman Britain’s inhabitants, but only a limited range of rites—mainly vows and curses—contributed to the epigraphic corpus. These practices were drawn from Roman religious tradition, framing concepts of deity and structuring interactions with the divine. Adherents belonged to different segments of provincial society, but the ‘community of soldiers’ is disproportionately represented. The act of naming has long been viewed as the key to unlocking the origins and identities of provincial deities, but consideration of the larger social, temporal, and geographic context of text-bearing ritual objects is essential for understanding how some members of Britannia’s populace recognized and communicated with their gods.

Two recent papers have presented experimental evidence against the hypothesis that there is a semantic connection between OUGHT and CAN, rather than a pragmatic and defeasible one. However, there are two flaws with their designs. One is temporal ambiguity: just asking whether “x ought to A” is underspecified as to when the obligation exists. Another is failing to distinguish between prior obligations and all-things-considered obligations. To test these potential confounds, the chapter author ran two experiments. The first paired some of the original stories with a visual timeline specifying the time of the obligation. The second flipped the wording of the original “obligated but can’t” question into the reversed: “can’t, but still obligated.” In both experiments, there were large and significant differences between the original and modified conditions. These results undermine the conclusions of the previous experiments and remain consistent with the Semantic Hypothesis.

Abstract A central question in the debate on justice in immigration is whether immigrants have a right to stay; this book argues that liberal-democratic receiving states should also grant migrants a right not to stay. This claim runs against the presumption that migrants always desire to move on a permanent basis and intend to forge a completely new life in the country of destination. From this perspective, temporary migration is always a second-best option for migrants, engendered by the closed and often punitive migration policies of receiving countries. This book’s innovative focus on the right not to stay is prompted instead by the realization that increasing numbers of migrants throughout the world conceive and plan their migratory experience as circumscribed in time and instrumental to goals and projects that they will pursue once back in their country of origin. These temporary migration projects are worthy of being accommodated by the receiving states as much as the migratory plans of those who resolve or aim to immigrate on a permanent basis. Accommodating them entails setting up the appropriate welfare measures and programmes in the host country and, through bi-lateral agreements, in the country of return. This is especially important in view of the fact that very often the migrants who engage in temporary migration projects find themselves in a condition of high vulnerability and risk. The ‘right not to stay’ advocated in this book is a positive and substantive right to see one’s project of temporary migration-and-return protected and accommodated by institutions.

How do the views developed in this book connect with traditional work in analytic metaphysics on time? After giving a potted history of the field, the chapter then displays many connections and modifications between that work and the present one. It highlights one major problem with traditional analytic philosophy of time, namely, its focus on bare existence, i.e., what events exist as of when. Almost by definition, existence will play no role in science, so philosophy of time will never be threatened by scientific results. The irony about this maneuver is that creating this safety zone around time leaves philosophers of time unable to do their original job, explaining the temporal phenomena.
