ABSTRACTObjective:The loss of a parent to cancer is considered one of the most traumatic events a teenager can experience. Studies have shown that teenagers, from the time of diagnosis, are already extremely worried about the consequences of a parent's cancer but tend to be left to manage these concerns on their own. The present study aimed to explore young adults' advice to healthcare professionals on how to support teenagers who are losing a parent to cancer. Methods:This work derives from a Swedish nationwide survey and employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive/interpretive design to obtain answers to an open-ended question concerning advice to healthcare professionals. Of the 851 eligible young adults who had lost a parent to cancer when they were 13–16 years of age within the previous 6 to 9 years, 622 participated in our survey (response rate = 73%). Of these 622 young adults, 481 responded to the open-ended question about what advice to give healthcare professionals. Results:Four themes emerged: (1) to be seen and acknowledged; (2) to understand and prepare for illness, treatment, and the impending death; (3) to spend time with the ill parent, and (4) to receive support tailored to the individual teenager's needs.Significance of Results:This nationwide study contributes hands-on suggestions to healthcare staff regarding attitudes, communication, and support from the perspective of young adults who, in their teenage years, lost a parent to cancer. Teenagers may feel better supported during a parent's illness if healthcare professionals take this manageable advice forward into practice and see each teenager as individuals; explain the disease, its treatments, and consequences; encourage teenagers to spend time with their ill parent; and recommend sources of support.

This study examined relations among teenagers’ and their mothers’ reports of values and autonomy expectations in relation to school misconduct in 58 Caucasian and 66 Asian high school students attending an international school in Hong Kong. Caucasian students were reported to exhibit more misconduct than did Asian students. Across cultures, teenagers’ endorsements of the values related to Openness to Change, and early autonomy expectations correlated positively whereas values related to Conservation correlated negatively with misconduct measures. Valuing tradition and conformity correlated negatively with disciplinary violations. Differences between teenagers’ and their mothers’ values significantly predicted disciplinary violations, providing evidence for the influence of parent/teenager interaction effects within families. The mediating role of values and autonomy expectations in explaining the link between culture and disciplinary violations is discussed in the light of these findings.

To assess relationships among measures of humor, creativity, and self-concept in early and late adolescents, seventh and eleventh grade students were evaluated on the basis of observational, rating, and psychometric procedures. These included direct observation of humorous events as well as teachers', peers', and raters' judgments of humorousness and creativity. Psychometric measures included the Torrance test and the Piers-Harris Self-concept Scale. For students in both grades, significant correlations were obtained between teachers', observers', and students' ratings of humorousness and humor production. While there were few significant correlations among creativity, humor, and self-concept for seventh graders, for eleventh graders there were many positive correlations. Results were taken to suggest that being humorous is part of a different complex of personal characteristics for seventh and eleventh graders.

Statement of the problem. The authors analyze the problem of forming an arbitrary form of self-consciousness among teenagers in the process of mastering psychology as a school discipline. The purpose of the article is to develop a concept of teaching psychology at school based on the theory of L.S. Vygotsky about the stages of development of mental functions. The research methodology is based on the cultural and historical theory by L.S. Vygotsky, on the analysis and synthesis of research works by international and Russian scientists on the problems of personal development, in particular, self-consciousness, recognized by the scientific community, as well as the experience of teaching psychology at school. Research results. Based on the cultural and historical theory by L.S. Vygotsky about the development of higher mental functions, the authors suggested and theoretically showed that teaching psychology at school can contribute to the formation of an arbitrary form of self-consciousness among adolescents. Self-coaching, as a form of internal self-communication, is a psychological means of developing self-awareness. Based on this, the preparation of psychology teaching programs for grades 5–11 should be based on a system of psychological knowledge, skills and abilities that allow a teenager to achieve a better self-awareness at each age stage. On the basis of this conceptual system, teenagers form their own psychological concept, “psychological theory”, which is the basis for understanding, interpreting and correcting their own thoughts, desires, actions, and behavior of people around them. Conclusion. The authors’ concept of teaching psychology at school, which includes self-coaching as a controlled form of internal dialogue, provides a student with a system of psychological concepts that contribute to the generalization and awareness of the subjective experience of his / her self-feelings, reflections and experiences.

The current review frames an understanding of ‘sexting’ among adolescents within the dual systems model of adolescent risk-taking. Adolescent sexting has been growing in popularity in recent years. When adolescents share sexual images, they face the possibility of serious consequences in the United States, such as being added to the sex offender registry. The dual systems model of adolescent risk-taking suggests teenagers engage in risky behavior due to the under development of impulse control and a peak in reward sensitivity. It is argued that the possible legal consequences of teenage sexting do not fit the developmental level of teenagers.

Scenes in movies where smoking occurs have been empirically shown to influence teenagers to smoke cigarettes. The capacity of a Canadian warning label on cigarette packages to decrease the effects of smoking scenes in popular movies has been investigated. A 2 × 3 factorial design was used to test the effects of the same movie scene with or without electronic manipulation of all elements related to smoking, and cigarette pack warnings, i.e., no warning, text-only warning, and text + picture warning. Smoking-related stereotypes and intent to smoke of teenagers were measured. It was found that, in the absence of warning, and in the presence of smoking scenes, teenagers showed positive smoking-related stereotypes. However, these effects were not observed if the teenagers were first exposed to a picture and text warning. Also, smoking-related stereotypes mediated the relationship of the combined presentation of a text and picture warning and a smoking scene on teenagers' intent to smoke. Effectiveness of Canadian warning labels to prevent or to decrease cigarette smoking among teenagers is discussed, and areas of research are proposed.

The problem of reader’s indifference of troubled teenagers hinders the development of cultural society; therefore, library-information institutions of the Russian Federation organize reading for this social community. However, library practices have low efficiency due to the lack of scientific knowledge about reader’s motives and informational needs of difficult teenagers, as well as special methods for developing their reading. To develop scientific methods for correcting the reading of difficult adolescents, taking into account their psycho-physiological features, the authors conducted the applied study based on the knowledge of the psychology of reading. The purpose of the article is to highlight the results of research aimed at studying the reader characteristics of socially troubled teenager and the method of organizing the reading in libraries. As a result, the authors revealed that the weakness of the emotional-volitional sphere, the involuntary attention, the inability to perceive and retain a large number of printed characters in consciousness is the basis of the reader’s failure of difficult adolescents. From this circumstance arose the question of using stimulating components in the reading process. Understanding the psychological features of the perception of text by troubled teenagers has allowed to assume that characteristics of the interactive document are the most suitable for them as external stimulus of reading. The data obtained in the psychological-pedagogical experiment indicated that interactive document compensates for the inadequate associative determinants of difficult teenager in the perception of printed documents, promotes visualization of literary images, which, in turn, contributes to the formation of motivational attitudes to reading and satisfies the information need. The authors consider the specific feature of interactive documents, which allows presenting the material in a more accessible perception. Reading of interactive documents can serve as a new effective method of the library work to meet the information needs of this social group, and it will expand the organization of reading of troubled teenagers.

Studies on the efficacy of parent training programs have mostly been conducted with preadolescents, with only a few studies investigating family treatment models in adolescents. In this article, a study is described that evaluates Standard Teen Triple P (Positive Parenting Program), a behavioural family intervention for parents of 11- to 16-year-old teenagers. Participants were 46 families with a teenager who was experiencing detectable behavioural and emotional problems. Compared to parents in the waitlist control condition, parents participating in the intervention condition reported decreased levels of teen disruptive behaviours and parent adolescent conflict, as well as a reduction in the use of ineffective parenting strategies and conflict over child-rearing issues. These positive changes were maintained at the 3-month follow-up. Results suggest that Standard Teen Triple P is a promising parenting intervention for tackling adolescent externalising problems.

We consider the current issue of teenagers’ attitude to psychoactive substances. A comprehensive study of the value relationship of teenagers to psychoactive substances and the motivation for their use is necessary. The teenagers development crisis leads to a drop in academic performance, a decrease in working capacity, negativism, alienation, ambivalence of feelings and much more, it is noted that the demonstrative “adulthood” of teenagers, their acute experience of the discrepancy between the external and internal worlds often lead them to behavioral transformations aimed at remaking reality for themselves. Based on the types of deviations characterized in psychology, we analyze the causes of chemical addiction. In the course of the study, we identify the main reasons that encourage teenagers to try drugs and consider the age differentiation of the reasons. The main motives of alcohol consumption by teenagers are determined. The results of the study were analyzed by gender of the respondents, and the peculiarities of the attitude to psychoactive substances and persons who use the above substances were noted. We present an expert assessment of the risk of teenagers’ dependence on psychoactive substances, given by schoolteachers, and identify the main causes that affect the risk of developing addiction. We note the necessity of conducting psychological preventive work with this group of respondents and the environment.

The authors ground the necessity to clarify the terminological and phenomenological specifics of the terms: “self-fulfillment”, “personal development”, “self-development”. The attention is drawn to the formal usage of these terms in the pedagogical science and the ambiguous interpretations by different scientific schools of psychology. The research of the manifestation of self-fulfillment and personal development is performed based on a selection of 126 teenagers, engaging the “Personal growth” scales from the methods of psychological well-being by C. Ryff, the “Personal growth” scales from the methods of “Life aspirations” by E.Deci, R.Ryan, as well as the author’s method of directivity to self-fulfillment and method to reveal the significance by V.Y, Kotlyakov. For the first time the authors’ questionnaire to measure the self-development in different life spheres is employed. The analysis of the empirical results allows to make a grounded statement that the contemporary teenagers have a prevailing egocentric directivity of self-fulfillment and reveals as well the importance of the interest to the moral aspects of being and the interiorized values of personal growth for the harmonious self-fulfillment of the teenager.

The importance of non-academic education for teenagers is considered no less important in order to the development of various potentials within them. Teenagers in Muara Teweh were considered quite enthusiastic for participating in various types of activities. However, there are some that are known to be frequent obstacles, including the unavailability of place and facilities, and environments that tend to be determinative. This situation is feared will reduce the interest of teenagers in exploring their potential interests and talents more freely. This is the background of the need to procure a place in the form of a youth center that has a function for accommodating these development activities but also offers a fun atmosphere, dynamic and flexible, so that teens can comfortably carry out their activities. The method that is used is an architectural psychology approach by observing the characteristics of teenagers as a design reference. This is manifested by the concept of a youth cultural space that is applied to architectural elements in both indoor and outdoor space.

This article describes how smartphones have converged into multifunctional personal devices. Smartphones are equipped with features such as Internet access, cameras (pictures and videos) and MP3 players. While a majority of previous research investigated the use and effects of mobile phones and young people, these studies focused on the Western context. A qualitative research method was used to investigate the research questions. Specifically, focus groups and in-depth interviews were used to collect data. Nevertheless, while a growing number of studies has investigated mobile phone use by teenagers in non-western countries, there is little research on smartphone uses and their implications to teenagers in an Islamic context. This article examines the uses of smartphones by, and their implications to, Bruneian teenagers. The research seeks to map and understand the complex forces that influence and challenge the socio-cultural values and religious beliefs of teenagers in a non-Western, Malay, Islamic society such as Brunei.

A review of the literature dealing with Sykes and Matza's theory of delinquency suggests that there is a need for a measure of their concept of neutralization that is both psychometrically sound and sensitive to the limited verbal skills of many delinquents. A neutralization scale was accordingly developed; evidence is offered to suggest that it is both reliable, in terms of internal consistency, and valid, in terms of (a) its relationship with other measures of a propensity toward delinquency, (b) its ability to differentiate between delinquents and nondelinquents, and (c) its ability to predict subsequent delinquency among incarcerated young offenders (both while institutionalized and during a 1-year postdischarge follow-up).

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the role of culture-specific socialization factors such as antecedents to technology readiness index (TRI) scale to understand the adoption of cutting-edge technologies among teenagers. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual model was empirically tested using survey data from 381 teenagers. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings Parent–child communication, peers, media and self-construal have varying influence on technology readiness of teenagers. The effects of parent–child interactions are mediated by self-construal, which reaffirms the importance of identity during adolescence. Research limitations/implications The culture-specific characteristics are critical antecedents to teenagers’ TRI. Moreover, the TRI 2.0 scale needs minor refinement to address culturally diverse marketplace where people are less familiar with the technical terms used in developed countries and display low levels of technology awareness. Practical implications Marketers need to tailor their communication strategies to have a strong presence on digital media to engage with teenagers. Firms should utilize media for providing information and develop content that should resonate with teens and potentially enhances their online impression to increase the adoption of technology. Originality/value This is the first study to investigate the antecedents of technology readiness of teenagers in an emerging market. The study uses a multidisciplinary approach to examine culture-dependent factors using theories from marketing literature (consumer socialization theory) and developmental psychology (self-construal).
