I denna studie undersöks hur arrangering och komponering av flöjtmusik med interferenstoner kan gå till. Syftet med studien har varit att undersöka skapandeprocessen. I studien beskrivs vad interferenstoner är och hur de fungerar på tvärflöjt. Under studien skapades tre arrangemang och åtta kompositioner som är skrivna antingen för två flöjtister som spelar tillsammans eller för en sjungande flöjtist. Studien identifierar olika resurser som har använts under arrangerings-, och komponeringsprocessen och förklarar även hur de användes. I studien beskrivs också hur arrangemangen och kompositionerna har designats för att interferenstonerna ska uppmärksam- mas.
This study investigates the process of arranging and composing music with difference notes for flute. The purpose of the study was to investigate the creative process. The study also describes what a difference note is and how it works on a flute. During the study three arrangements and eight compositions were created and the pieces are either for two flutists playing together or for one singing flutist. The study identifies different resources that are being used during the arranging and composing process and explains how they are being used. The study further describes how the arrangements and compositions have been designed so that the difference notes will be audible.

Bakalauro darbo tikslas išanalizuoti ketverių metų vaikų gebėjimą tarti kalbos garsus. Tyrimu siekiama išanalizuoti vaikų gebėjimą tarti kalbos garsus skiemenyse, žodžiuose, sakiniuose, sudėtingos skiemeninės struktūros žodžiuose. Analizuojant tyrimo duomenis, fiksuoti garsų tarimo trūkumai, jų gausos ir įvairovės. Tyrimo metodu buvo pasirinkta tarties tikrinimo kortelė. Tyrime dalyvavo 100 ketverių metų amžiaus vaikų. Jie buvo pasirinkti atsitiktinai. Tirti buvo tie, kurie tuo metu lankė darželį. Tyrimu nustatyta, kad dauguma keturmečių tardami įvairius kalbos vienetus susiduria su sunkumais. Tik trečdalis vaikų tardami atskirus garsus, skiemenis, žodžius, sakinius, sudėtingos skiemeninės struktūros žodžius nesusiduria su sunkumais, taria juos taisyklingai. Analizuojant garsų grupių tarimo trūkumus, nustatyta, kad santykis tarp vienos ir kelių garsų grupių tarimo trūkumų yra beveik vienodas. Sunkesnius garsus tiriamieji keičia kitais, praleidžia, papildomai įveda, iškraipo arba neišlaiko skiemeninės žodžio struktūros. Pastebėta, kad dažniausia tarimo trūkumų forma sigmatizmas ir rotacizmas. Rečiau pasitaikė kapacizmo, gamacizmo, jotacizmo atvejų.
The purpose of The Bachelor Thesis was to analyze the four – year – old children‘s ability to pronounce spesch sounds. The research deals with children's ability to pronounce speech sounds in syllables words, sentences and in words with a complex syllabic structure. Defects of the sounds pronunciation, their abundance and diversity were recorded when analyzing the survey data. Method of the research was pronunciation testing card. There were 100 four-year-old children in this research. Children, who attended kindergarten at the time, were selected at random. The results of research showed that most four-year-old children have difficulties with the pronunciation of various speech units. Only a third of the children do not face difficulties in pronunciation of individual speech sounds, syllables, words, sentences, words with a complex syllabic structure. They pronounce them correctly. Analysis of the sound’s groups pronunciation defects revealed that the ratio of the pronunciation between one and several groups of sounds is nearly equal. The respondents replaced more complicated sounds to others, elided, added extra, mangled or failed the syllabic structure of the words. It was noticed that the most common form of pronunciation defects were sigmatism and rhotacism. Cases of kapacism, gamacism, jotacism were rear.

Contrary to popular belief, Tartan Noir is not a synonym for Scottish noir but a mystifying marketing label for a national literature: dark, contemporary Scottish crime fiction. As it comprises an immense diversity of writing done in such mainstream sub-genres as detective, police, and serial killer fiction, as well as actual noir, I will investigate both the contrasts and the crossovers between said sub-genres. I will show that only few of the writers who are most associated with Tartan Noir write much, or any, noir, whereas most of those who do are not commonly associated with the term. With a view to remedying this, I will discuss the novels which have most influenced the reputation of Tartan Noir alongside those which have most influenced its identity. And by showing how this literature integrates the tension between several highly charged counter concepts – such as conformity and individuality, convention and innovation, sensationalism and thoughtful social, cultural, and political commentary – I hope to demystify Tartan Noir, that is, define the term and refine its use.

Les entreprises revendiquent de plus en plus le fait qu'elles adoptent des pratiques responsables. Cela peut être lié au fait qu'il existe des parties prenantes (e.g. consommateurs, investisseurs) qui sont prêtes à récompenser les comportements responsables. Cependant, la véracité des revendications des entreprises est souvent impossible ou au moins difficile à certifier, ce qui peut inciter les entreprises à manipuler leur communication. Cette dissertation a pour objectif d'analyser la façon dont de tierces parties peuvent tempérer cette asymétrie d'information. Des organisations comme des agences de notations, des organisations non-gouvernementales (ONGs) ou des organismes certificateurs, peuvent examiner les actions réelles des entreprises et transmettre cette information aux parties prenantes. Ces tierces parties ont un comportement informationnel hétérogène: certaines fournissent des informations plus particulièrement sur les entreprises qui se comportent de manière irresponsable, alors que d'autres se spécialisent dans la mise en lumière des entreprises responsables. Nous développons un modèle théorique simple qui explore l'offre de qualité dans des environnements informationnels amicaux, où la qualité est révélée plus souvent lorsqu'elle est haute que lorsqu'elle est basse, et dans des environnements hostiles, où c'est l'inverse. Nous appliquons ensuite ce modèle à deux types de tierces parties: les ONGs et les labels. Nous étudions le choix de production de bonnes ou mauvaises nouvelles afin de comprendre quand et pourquoi les ONGs choisissent d'être hostiles ou amicales. Ensuite, nous cherchons à évaluer quel est le niveau de sévérité des labels qui entraîne le plus d'investissement et le bien être social le plus important.

This thesis studies the role of third parties in tempering informational issues at stake with regard to corporate social responsibility (CSR). Firms growingly claim to be adopting responsible practices, and it may be so because some socially conscious stakeholders (e.g. consumers, investors) are ready to reward such behaviors. Nevertheless, truthfulness of firms' virtue claims is often impossible or at least difficult to ascertain, which creates an incentive for firms to manipulate their communication. This dissertation intends to analyse how third parties can temper this asymmetry of information. Organisms such as rating agencies, non-governmental organisations, labeling institutions, can investigate firms' real actions and convey this information to stakeholders. These third parties have heterogeneous informational behaviors: some of them mostly disclose information on firms that do not behave responsibly while others are specialized in revealing firms that are socially or environmentally responsible. We develop a simple theoretical model that explores the provision of quality by a firm under friendly informational environments, in which quality is more often disclosed when it is high than when it is low, and hostile environments, in which the converse holds. We apply this base model to two types of third party: NGOs and labels. We endogenize the production of good and bad news in order to understand when and why NGOs choose between being hostile or friendly. Then, we seek to assess what is the more efficient level of label's strictness to spur social welfare and investment in high quality

The United Kingdom is entering a period of great uncertainty, with the future of Scotland’s membership still in question. Following personal work experience in the Scottish Parliament, it became apparent to me that the Scottish National Party currently finds itself in a unique position. By utilizing constituency maps, this study will trace the evolution of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and explore how its changing nature allowed it to grow from a minute populist group seeking independence to a social justice party hoping to appeal to a more diverse group of voters by increasing credibility at the local level and then into a fully-fledged third party capable of entering into coalition with the political establishment at Westminster and holding a membership referendum. Focus will be placed on the changing political landscape of the United Kingdom and the SNP’s role within that scope. The paper will conclude with predictions of the possibilities for the SNP’s role in Scotland, within the UK and the European Union.

The development of the SNP was aided and impacted by a number of variables. Firstly, devolution from Westminster following the creation of a Scottish parliament, Holyrood, in the 1990s gave the SNP a second arena in which to demonstrate their governing ability. Secondly, the role of certain personalities must be noted, with important figures having an impact in both Westminster and Holyrood. The most well-known of these figures is Alex Salmond, the first SNP First Minister, who was able to guide the SNP from obscurity to a governing party, capable of holding referendums. In addition, Nicola Sturgeon, the current First Minister and Salmond’s deputy First Minister, has been vital to continuing the party’s momentum in the wake of Brexit. Down in Westminster, other personalities will also be important, such as Margaret Thatcher, David Cameron and Theresa May. Thirdly, the British media’s coverage of the SNP had a dramatic impact on the viability of the party to the electorate.

Despite a number of recent studies focused on the issue, patterns of stream insect dispersal in temperate streams of North America remain poorly understood. Movement of benthic invertebrates is notoriously difficult to measure directly using traditional means; however, genetic markers provide an ideal method for estimating stream insect dispersal. In this study, the control region of mitochondrial DNA was used to study gene flow and dispersal among populations of the stonefly Peltoperla tarteri in the Southern Appalachians. The control region of P. tarteri is approximately 1270 base pairs (bp) in length, 81% AT-rich, and contains variable numbers of a 74 bp tandem repeat containing the sequence motif "5'-GGGGGC-3". Many stream insects have long life cycles that result in the simultaneous existence of multiple cohorts throughout the larval development period. If larval development is fixed, genetic isolation among cohorts may confound genetic estimates of dispersal. Although larval head width data indicated that P. tarteri is semivoltine in southwestern Virginia, low levels of genetic differentiation among cohorts suggested that larval development of P. tarteri is not fixed and that some individuals complete development in one or three years rather than two. This 'cohort splitting' would result in individuals from distinct cohorts maturing at the same time and mating with one another. Such developmental plasticity may allow some individuals to avoid adverse environmental conditions. The extent and likely mechanism of dispersal was determined by comparing levels of population genetic differentiation within drainages to that among drainages. While there was no consistent relationship between genetic and geographic distance, genetic differentiation was generally high within and among drainages. Nested clade analysis indicates that historical fragmentation and range expansion coupled with contemporary gene flow explain the present day pattern of genetic variation in P. tarteri. In order for these historical patterns to have such a strong influence on present day genetic structure, both larval and adult dispersal must be restricted. However, the genetic data suggest that larval dispersal is more frequent than adult dispersal.

Thanks to today's digital imaging technology, any ten year old child with basic computer skills can create convincing counterfeit currency. It comes as no surprise that as output quality and costs have improved in ink-jet printers, there has been a corresponding surge in digital counterfeiting of security documents. The design of a system, through which a printer can recognize a security or other protected document though identification of a watermark, presents a challenge for the application of information hiding techniques. The marking should be strong enough to provide certainty that a document was intentionally marked and robust enough to withstand the transformations inherent in the scanning and printing process. Using an extended spread­spectrum technique, a small one-dimensional thread encoded with a known multi-bit signature is generated. If the printer detects a match, printing halts and a warning message is output to the user. By applying several such threads at varying orientations, this can provide an effective first line of defense against the casual digital counterfeiter.

This study explores how influential the kilt and tartan are in the way Americans perceive and express their identity in Scottish terms. Its principal focus is directed on individuals who wear the kilt in America today. The reasons which prompt people to consider qualifying their American identity are considered in the context of a number of different Scottish American organisations and community activities. These are prefaced by an appraisal of contemporary attitudes to wearing the kilt in Scotland today. An ethnological approach has been adopted to ascertain the role played by these material cultural elements, and in particular the informants' own words are used to illustrate the power these symbols posses to influence the construction of Scottish identity. The changing nature of society is considered as one of the factors contributing to such a need. Tartan and the kilt encapsulate many facets of a heritage which people aspire to access; they may also represent a part-mythical family origin for those seeking roots. They are the apparent visual manifestation of ancient kin links. The author's own observations through participation in some of the activities of the Scottish American community provide further evidence of the significant role played by tartan and kilt in the iteration of Scottish identity by Americans. The remarkable growth in the number of Americans who choose to adopt a Scottish element as part of their identity can be attributed in substantial part to the power these symbols possess.

Visual dominance. Our human perception, that with great authority, powerfully influences and controls all of our senses. In turn, our minds try to acquire and maintain meaningful perceptions in what we are experiencing, may that be in a chaotic world, a cacophony in colour or vibrations in patterns. This project explores disturbances in pattern and colour and how these elements can deceive the eye. Playing with elements such as opacity, layers and transparency the nine outfits presented in this project attempt to explore the principles of Gestalt psychology to create disorder and confusion. Significantly, the project discusses our perception of pattern and colour and how with small measures these components can outsmart our senses, highlighting the importance of psychological methods and techniques in design rather than scientific or mathematical.

Questo lavoro propone uno studio sul tempo narrativo nel romanzo Il deserto dei Tartari di Dino Buzzati. Il terzo romanzo dello scrittore italiano pubblicato nel 1940 racconta la vicenda di un ufficiale dellesercito che per tutta la sua vita serve in una fortezza della frontiera nord del suo paese, la quale sta di fronte ad un grandissimo deserto da cui un giorno dovrebbe arrivare uninvasione nemica. Si cerca di studiare in questo romanzo, allegoria dellumana condizione, le diverse relazioni delluomo con il suo più grande nemico: il tempo. Si discutono nel capitolo primo alcune teorie sul tempo e la narrativa di diversi studiosi che hanno sviluppato questo tema. Le loro teorie sono la base per lanalisi proposta. Nel secondo capitolo si studia più accuratamente il problema del tempo allinterno di questa narrativa sviluppando poi l´analisi proposta, nel capitolo terzo, propone una discussione sulle relazioni del tempo sia con lo spazio sia con luomo.
O presente trabalho propõe um estudo sobre questões de tempo em narrativa no romance Il deserto dei Tartari de Dino Buzzati. Terceiro romance do escritor italiano, publicado em 1940, narra a saga de um oficial de exército que presta serviço a vida inteira em um forte localizado na fronteira norte de seu país que guarda um imenso deserto a sua frente, de onde um dia uma invasão inimiga é esperada. Procuramos estudar no texto, alegoria da condição humana, as diversas relações do homem com seu maior inimigo, o tempo. Tratamos no primeiro capítulo dos trabalhos sobre tempo e narrativa, a partir de vários estudiosos que se ocuparam desse tema e que nos auxiliam em todo o trabalho. Prenant pour point de départ l'œuvre de l'écrivain américain, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), notre thèse étudiera les écrits du français Henri Bosco et de l'italien Dino Buzzati. Elle concernera principalement la première moitié du XXe siècle. On étudiera le thème des lieux en montrant comment ces derniers deviennent des paysages fantasmatiques : les lieux de la mort sont des lieux isolés qui influencent l'action et sont, parfois, des personnages à part entière. Puis, on analysera le thème du temps, indissociablement lié au sentiment de la mort. On verra ce dernier se manifester dans l'immobilité - ou l'accélération - du temps, dans la perte du sentiment de la durée ou la mesure obsessionnelle du temps par les personnages. Enfin, le sentiment de la mort apparaîtra à travers le thème des personnages complexes, ambigus, parfois pervers, ou, au contraire, symbolisant le Bien absolu. On ne dissociera pas l'étude de ces thèmes de celle des principaux axes des œuvres. Ainsi, on verra comment les lieux, les personnages et le sentiment de la durée servent l'idée de la quête de l'Idéal. On montrera aussi que cette dernière ne peut exister sans une spiritualisation du monde où l'on voit agir l'âme des lieux et celle des personnages. Et l'analyse des œuvres montrera de quelle façon celles-ci reflètent les préoccupations eschatologiques des auteurs : exploration du seuil de l'au-delà, présence des données, apocalyptiques, infernales. Enfin, on mettra en évidence que le fantastique est le principe d'écriture régissant les œuvres étudiées : onirisme en rapport avec le sentiment de la mort, présences de la Mort maternelle, d'un avant-monde de la naissance, d'une intrusion de la mort dans la vie
From the Edgar Allan Poe's works, our thesis will examine some ones of the French novelist, Henri Bosco, and a few of the Italian writer, Dino Buzzat. It ill concern mainly the first half of the twentieth century. We'll study the themes of the places showing how they serve the imaginary world of the writers : the spots of death are isolated places where the animal and vegetable kingdoms just as the elements influence action. Sometimes they are themselves true characters. The, we'ss analyse the theme of time linked to the feeling of death : motionlessness or too speedy time, the loss of the feeling of length or, on the contrary, the obsession of time by the characters. We won't dissociate the study of these themes of the key-ideas of the works. So, we'll see how the places, the characters and the feeling of lengthh contribute to the idea of the quest of Ideal. We'll show also that the quest doesn't exist without a world metamorphosed by the transcendence in which the soul of the places and that one's of the characters are acting. And the analysis of the works will show how they reflect the preoccupations of the authors : exploration of the the treshold of the beyond, presence of apocalyptic, infernal facts. At last, we'll bring that the fantastic is the principle of the style governing the studied works : obvious connection between imagination and feeling of death, presences of maternal death, of a world before the birth, of an interference of death into life

Darbo tikslas - ištirti LNK televizijos laidos „Valanda su Rūta“ vedėjos Rūtos Mikelkevičiūtės, TV3 laidos „Kodėl“ vedėjos Rūtos Janutienės ir LTV televizijos laidos „Teisė žinoti“ vedėjos Ritos Miliūtės kalbą verbalikos (tarties) ir neverbalikos aspektais. Darbo uždaviniai: nustatyti tarties ir išorinių garsinių stiliaus veiksnių įtaką žiniasklaidai, komunikacijai; Įvertinti televizijos laidų vedėjų kalbą pagal bendrąją šnekamosios kalbos konstantą – kalbėseną; išnagrinėti žurnalisčių verbalikos ir neverbalikos ypatumus; įvertinti televizijos laidų vedėjų žurnalistinius ypatumus atsiskleidžiančius per kalbą; Palyginti laidų vedėjų kalbą tarpusavyje; Nustatyti žurnalisčių kalbos įtaką visuomenei; Atskleisti laidos vedėjų asmenybės individualumą nagrinėjant jų kalbos ypatybes; Atskleisti komunikacijos ir kalbos santykį; Išaiškinti žiniasklaidos ir kalbos įtaką komunikacijos sėkmei. Išanalizavus mokslinę literatūrą, taikant literatūros analizės, empirinio stebėjimo metodus, prieita prie išvados, kad žiniasklaidos ir kalbos santykis yra neatsiejamas ir itin reikšmingas televizijoje dirbančių žurnalistų komunikacijos sėkmei. Taikant apibendrinamosios abstrakcijos metodą, pastebėta žiniasklaidos ir komunikacijos kalbos įtaka formuojantis, individo, kaip savęs suvokimo, evoliucijai. The object of the Master’s thesis is spontaneous public speech on the TV. The goal of the thesis is to explore the speech of Rūta Mikelkevičiūtė, presenter of LNK TV programme “An hour with Rūta”, Rūta Janutienė, presenter of TV3 programme “Why?”, and Rita Miliūtė, presenter of LTV television programme “The Right to Know” in terms of verbalics (pronunciation) and non-verbalics. Objectives of the thesis: to determine the effect of pronunciation and external sonic style factors on the media and communication; to evaluate the speech of TV presenters in terms of the general speech constant – talk; to explore the peculiarities of verbalics and non-verbalics of the journalists; to evaluate journalistic peculiarities of TV programme presenters that are revealed through their language; to compare the speech of programme presenters among themselves; to determine the effect of the individuality of programme presenters while exploring the peculiarities of their speech; to disclose the correlation between communication and speech; to determine the effect of media and speech on communication success. After analysing research literature and applying the methods of literature analysis, as well as empirical observation a conclusion was made that the correlation between media and speech is inseparable and is especially significant for communication success of the journalists working in the TV. The idea of two elements overlapping to create a third element is a very simple idea, yet one imbued with possibility. It can be as simple as two colors combining to create a new color: yellow + blue = green. This new, third element can stand alone, but it always retains traces of the two original elements. This third element is enriched by the two primary elements, and they, in turn, are enriched by this connection. 1 + 1 = 3 The place where two elements come together can become an integral part of both elements. It can become a central space where ideas meet and intermingle. In such a way, a school of architecture and design centers around its studio. The studio is, for the student, the place where living and learning come together. Here, the practicality of materials meets the theoretical concepts of the classroom. It is often, quite literally, "home away from home" for the student, who spends many hours working on studio projects, gathering with students and faculty, trying to bring design theories into practice. With this idea in mind, a Girls' School of Design is postulated.

One of the most striking features of contemporary Scottish fiction has been its shift from the predominantly realist novels of the 1960s and 1970s to an engagement with very different modes of writing, from the mixture of realism and visionary future satire in Alasdair Gray’s Lanark (1981) to the Rabelaisian absurdity and excess of Irvine Welsh’s Filth (1998). This development has received considerable critical attention, energising debates concerning how such writing relates to or challenges familiar tropes of identity and national culture. At the same time, however, there has been a very striking and commercially successful rise in the production of popular genre literature in Scotland, in categories which have included speculative fiction and crime fiction. Although Scottish literary fiction of recent decades has been studied in great depth, Scottish popular genre literature has received considerably less critical scrutiny in comparison. Therefore, the aim of my research is to examine popular Scottish writing of the stated period in order to reflect upon whether a significant relationship can be discerned between genre fiction and the mainstream of Scottish literary fiction, and to consider the characteristics of such a connection between these different modes of writing. To achieve this objective, the dissertation will investigate whether the features of any such shared literary concerns are inclined to vary between the mainstream of literary fiction in Scotland and two different, distinct forms of popular genre writing. My research will take up the challenge of engaging with the popular genres of speculative fiction and crime fiction during the years 1975 to 2006. I intend to discuss the extent to which the national political and cultural climate of the period under discussion informed the narrative form and social commentary of such works, and to investigate the manner in which, and the extent to which, a specific and identifiably Scottish response to these ideological matters can be identified in popular prose fiction during this period. This will be done by discussing and comparing eight novels in total; four for each chosen popular genre. From the field of speculative fiction, I will examine texts by the authors Iain M. Banks, Ken MacLeod, Margaret Elphinstone and Matthew Fitt. The discussion will then turn to crime fiction, with an analysis of novels by Ian Rankin, Christopher Brookmyre, Denise Mina and Louise Welsh. As well as evaluating the work of each author and its relevance to other texts in the field, consideration will be given to the significance of each novel under discussion to wider considerations of ideology, genre and national identity which were ongoing both at the time of their publication and in subsequent years. The dissertation’s conclusion will then consider the nature of the relationship between the popular genres which have been examined and the mainstream of Scottish literary fiction within the period indicated above.

La présente étude analyse les représentations de la ville dans la série policière d'Ian Rankin dont l'inspecteur John Rebus est le protagoniste. La polarité étant l'un des principes organisateurs de l'écriture rankinienne, notre analyse s'articule autour de plusieurs couples de notions antinomiques. Nous remettons d'abord en cause la légitimité de l'antinomie qui oppose la littérature à la " littérature de masse ", dans laquelle est souvent classé le roman policier. Cela nous conduit à redéfinir le roman policier, et mettre en perspective la série dans le contexte du monde littéraire et artistique écossais contemporain. Puis nous étudions l'articulation entre topographie réelle et lieu imaginaire dans l'Edimbourg de Rankin. Toute une géographie urbaine se dessine dans les romans ; l'arpentage incessant de l'espace par le protagoniste fournit l'occasion de références très spécifiques à la topographie et à la toponymie, et la sérialité tisse peu à peu un dense réseau de points nodaux ainsi qu'une multiplicité de trajets potentiels que nous avons représentés par des cartes fournies en annexe. Mais dans d'autres cas, l'espace se fait générique, se réfère plus à des conventions cinématographiques qu'à la carte de la ville. Nous envisageons enfin la ville d'Edimbourg comme un personnage ambivalent dans la lignée des personnages du roman gothique. La filiation gothique est perceptible dans l'esthétique de la ville, et la surface de la carte est compartimentée suivant un ensemble d'axes polarisants. Toutefois, cette carte se déploie elle-même par-dessus un double souterrain et non cartographiable d'Edimbourg, à la fois mémoire et inconscient de la ville.

Giuseppe Tartini is one of the most important personalities in the history of violin playing and literature. His rich heritage has contributed to the development of both, and his influence has crossed afar the Italian borders. This diploma thesis brings a complex view into the life and creation of this 18th century violin virtuoso. His composing activity uprose from his master violin skills, and therefore he composed especially for this instrument. Tartini transmitted his knowledge to the students of paduan School of nations, which he himself had founded. His treatise on ornaments Traité des agréments, compiled of the practical comments on the ornament interpretation, is of great significance. No small attention deserves also his letter to the pupil Maddalena Lombardini. As a matter of fact, it is a violin lesson in a letter form, and the value of the letter is by no means just historical. Another area of Tartini's interest was music theory, in which he invented so called difference tones. His contribution to the development of violin bow is also praiseworthy; he made several adaptations which brought the bow nearer to its current shape.

abstract: This document is comprised of an arrangement and recording of Giuseppe Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill” Sonata for solo violin, and includes historical background, an exploration of Italian ornamentation, and a structural analysis. The original work was written for violin and basso continuo. The author was inspired to create this arrangement for solo violin based on accounts that Tartini liked to perform this work unaccompanied. The first three chapters focus on events from Tartini’s early life that influenced his compositional style. Chapters four and five provide an overview of Italian ornamentation, and explore five documents that were used to support decisions in creating the arrangement: Giovanni Luca Conforto’s The Joy of Ornamentation; Giuseppe Tartini’s Traité des Agréments de la Musique; Letter to Signora Maddalena Lombardini; Regole; and L’Arte dell Arco. Chapter six provides a structural analysis of the Sonata. The appendices illustrate the process of creating the arrangement. The arrangement takes into consideration the composite of the original solo and basso continuo parts. In addition, a set of realized ornaments is provided on an ossia staff. The recording includes both the primary arrangement, presented in each initial section, as well as the realized ornaments, presented in each repeated section.

In the history of 18th century music for the violin, Giuseppe Tartini plays an important role, no matters either in Composing or Teaching. He is known as “Maestro delle Nazioni” because he had created the first violin school in Europe. He followed Arcangelo Corelli, brought the violin-playing to another peak. Italy’s “Bel canto” also affected Giuseppe Tartini’s style and his composition. This treatise is divided into four chapters with a conclusion. Chapter one including motivation, purposes, range and methods about this research. Chapter two provides a biographical sketch of Giuseppe Tartini and discusses about the historic background of his Devil’s Trill .Chapter three gives a musical analysis of the Kreisler edition of the Devil’s Trill Sonata. The main theme of this thesis is the existential anxiety and the motive of death in the early prosaic texts of the Italian author Dino Buzzati. The first chapter is dedicated to the author's biography where mainly the early years of his literary career are emphasized. After this introductory session follows an overview of the main features of existentialism as well as its place in the context of 20th century European literature and philosophy. In the last section of the theoretical part of the thesis we comment on the possible analogies between the literary work of Dino Buzzati and those of Franz Kafka, which were noticed by the contemporary literary criticism. The analytical part of the thesis is dedicated to the literary analysis of the primary texts: the novel The Tartar Steppe and selected short stories of the collection The Seven Messengers. In the last section we draw conclusions on the literary style of Dino Buzzati based on the previous analysis of the literary texts.

Na presente dissertação defende-se que em O Deserto dos Tártaros (1940), romance do autor italiano Dino Buzzati (1906 - 1972), a identificação do(s) motivo(s) que possa(m) ter levado o protagonista a agir como agiu, aparentando ir contra a sua própria vontade, é uma questão que resulta desvalorizada na narrativa. Propõe-se em contrapartida uma linha de leitura segundo a qual o foco do romance incide principalmente no significado da contradição do protagonista. Nessa perspectiva, ensaia-se a possibilidade de acomodar na narrativa dois modos seculares e divergentes de pensar os comportamentos humanos: o aristotélico, que contempla a possibilidade de acrasia (ou seja, falta de autodomínio), e o platónico, que a nega. Pretende-se por fim mostrar que, nesta linha de leitura, o romance de Buzzati suscita sobretudo relevantes questões de ordem moral e de autoconhecimento.
In the present dissertation we argue that in The Tartar Steppe (1940), a novel by the Italian author Dino Buzzati (1906 - 1972), the identification of the motive(s) that might have led the protagonist to act the way he did, apparently going against his own will, is a matter devaluated by the narrative. Instead, we propose a reading according to which the main focus of the novel is on the meaning of the protagonist’s contradiction. In that perspective, it is attempted the possibility to accommodate in the narrative two secular and divergent theories on human behaviours: the Aristotelian, which allows for akrasia (i.e. lack of mastery), and the Platonic, that does not. We would like to show that, if read this way, Buzzati’s novel is above all raising relevant issues on morals and knowledge.
