During the 20th century, most countries had their electricity production, transport and distribution organised as vertically integrated monopoly. Since the 90s more and more countries, especially in Europe, have replaced their state monopoly by an open market to manage their electrical power system. In order to settle a deregulated market of electricity, countries must adopt new methods and rules for trading electricity, planning production and managing the balance between electricity production and consumption of national power systems. In this context new tools are needed, such as software tools and information systems. This master thesis is part of an R&D project, aiming at developing software tools for the implementation of electricity markets, especially the mechanisms of bidding to buy and sell electricity on the Balancing Market. The new software developed by this R&D project is a generic software, based on a flexible model, and it should be adapted to different systems of electricity markets. The present master thesis report explains the principles and processes of electricity markets, focusing on the auction mechanisms for the purchase of electricity in real time: the Balancing Market. The report exposes different methods to regulate the stability of electricity network in different European countries (Regulation Services to maintain the balance between electricity production and consumption), and analyses different systems of Balancing Market in various countries; more specifically, it inludes syntheses of the balancing market systems in Romania, Hungary, Germany, France and the Nordic countries. From the confrontation of those systems, the basis for a new flexible model has been developed. This report aims to be useful for people who have to work on a project related to electricity market (especially this R&D project) and need to acquire the required knowledge about markets of electricity, regulation services and balancing markets (especially the market systems of Romania, Hungary, Germany, France and the Nordic countries).

Various multi-provider, multi-media and multi-technology systems have emerged from the convergence of communications and computing technologies. With such systems, the provision of services over heterogeneous networks with competing service providers becomes a very challenging issue. In the mobile communication environment, this trend is also accompanied by a reorganisation of the business model. For instance, with first generations of mobile systems, the network operator was also the service provider. This is now changing with the recent introduction of organisations that offer mobile services without owning a network infrastructure nor a radio licence to operate a network. It becomes therefore apparent that there will be a separation between the service and network provider roles in emerging mobile communication systems. This research study proposes a framework to allow this separation by allowing heterogeneous networks to support various service creation platforms. The proposal is organised around a set of 'digital marketplaces' where agents acting on behalf of users and organisations are able to trade communication services. These inter-agent interactions are performed according to a pre-defined auction protocol and controlled by a market provider. Dynamics of a marketplace are driven by economics principles so as to reach a market equilibrium where the demand of services equals its associated supply. In this context, scarce resources are preserved for users who value them most. In each marketplace, a reputation mechanism is in place to penalise network operators which are not fulfilling their contract commitments. Smart services can exploit the dynamics of a digital marketplace by exploiting more efficiently the radio resources. The key features of the proposed marketbased framework are a self-organisation in an environment where providers and users can register dynamically, a competition at the service level, the possibility to develop fairer pricing shemes and the integration of various service creation platforms over heterogeneous networks.

The concept of a bin leasing system represents an effort to use bins more extensively. In a leasing system one inventory of bins would be used by two‘or more annual users. System benefits would be lower per-use costs for the user and the opportunity for the lessor to make a profit. In order to establish a working data base of information, a mailed questionnaire was sent to 333 fruit and vegetable processors. The response rate on the survey was 45%. A typical bin is built of hardwood lumber, lasts about seven years, and costs an average of $36.53. Seventy-eight percent of the owners considered bin repair a problem, 85% thought bin transport was expensive, 96.5% agreed that bins were a significant investment. Overall, 66% considered bin leasing a viable option to ownership. Eastern North Carolina was chosen as the most promising leasing system location. The system will cater to cucumber/pepper processors and sweet potato packers. The method chosen to establish the system is to contract with one or more large companies to supply, on a lease basis, the required replacement bins for future years. A sample system was designed based on cost and revenue information received from area bin owners. Calculations yielded a net present value of $31,056.99 for a 15 year run of the system when using a discount rate of 12.5%. The effects of changes in key variables were analyzed. The most dramatic changes in NPV were due to changes in bin life and per-bin revenues.

Mosquera, Méndez Paola Andrea. "Evaluation of a primary health care strategy implemented in a market-oriented health system : the case of Bogota, Colombia". Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Epidemiologi och global hälsa, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-86996.

Resumo:
Introduction: Despite Colombia having adopted a health system based on an insurance market, Bogota in 2004, as part of a left-wing government (elected for first time in the city), decided to implement a Primary Health Care (PHC) strategy to improve quality of life, level of population health and reduce health inequities. The PHC strategy has been implemented through the HomeHealth program by three consecutive governments over the last eight years in the context of continuous political tension stemming from differences between national and district health policies. This thesis is an attempt to provide a better understanding of the overall experience of implementing a PHC strategy in the context of a market-oriented health care system. The research aimed to evaluate results of the PHC strategy through the intervention of the Home Health program and to identify factors that have enabled or limited the on-going PHC implementation process in Bogota. Methods: This study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A descriptive analysis was performed to assess direct results of the PHC strategy in terms of progress in the Home Health program coverage and increases in health personnel ratios reaching out to poor and vulnerable groups in Bogota. A cross sectional analysis was carried out to evaluate qualities of the delivery of PHC services through the attainment of PHC essential dimensions in the network of first-level public health care facilities. An ecological analysis was performed to estimate the contribution of the PHC strategy, through the Home Health program, to improve child health outcomes and to reduce health inequalities. A qualitative multiple case study was conducted to identify contextual factors that have enabled or limited the on-going PHC implementation process in Bogota. Results: The descriptive analysis showed a notable initial increase and rapid expansion in the development of the PHC strategy between 2004 and 2007, followed by a period of slower growth and stagnation between 2007 and 2010. The cross-sectional analysis suggested that the Home Health program could be helping to improve the performance of first-level public health care facilities. Ratings assigned to PHC dimensions by different participants pointed out the need to strengthen family focus, community orientation, financial resources distribution, and accessibility. The ecological analysis showed that localities with high PHC coverage had a lower risk of under-five mortality, infant mortality and acute malnutrition as well as a higher probability of being vaccinated than low PHC coverage localities. The belonging to a high-coverage locality was significantly associated with risk reductions of under-five mortality (13.8%) and infant mortality by pneumonia (37.5%) as well as increases in the probability of being vaccinated for DPT (4.9%). Concentration curves and concentration indices indicated inequality reductions in all child indicators betwen 2003 and 2007. In 2007 (period after implementation), the PHC strategy was associated with a reduction in the effect of the inequality that affected disadvantaged localities in under-five mortality (24%), infant mortality rate (19%), acute malnutrition (7%) and DPT vaccination coverage (20%). The main facilitators of the results achieved so far by the PHC strategy were all related to the commitment and good will of actors at different levels. Longterm political commitment, support by local mayors and hospital managers, organized communities historically active in the process of social participation, as well as extramural work carried out by community health workers and health care teams were highly valued. Barriers to the implementation included the structure of the national health system itself, lack of a stable funding source, unsatisfactory working conditions, lack of competencies among health workers regarding family focus and community orientation, and limited involvement of institutions outside the health sector in generating intersectoral responses and promoting community participation. Conclusion: Despite adverse contextual conditions and limitations imposed by the Colombian health system itself, Bogota’s initiative of a PHC strategy has helped to improve the performance of first-level public health care facilities in the essential dimensions of PHC and has also contributed to improvement of child health outcomes and reduction of health inequalities associated with socioeconomic and living conditions. Significant efforts are required to overcome the market approach of the national health system. Structural changes to social policies at the national and district level are needed if the PHC strategy is expected to achieve its full potential. Specific interventions must be designed to have well-trained and motivated human resources, as well as to establish available and stable financial resources for the PHC strategy.

Kodsi, Sameh. "Accounting for the Effects of Power System Controllers and Stability on Power Dispatch and Electricity Market Prices". Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/930.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Recently, the widespread use of power system controllers, such as PSS and FACTS controllers, has led to the analysis of their effect on the overall stability of power systems. Many studies have been conducted to allocate FACTS controllers so that they achieve optimal power flow conditions in the context of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) analysis. However, these studies usually do not examine the effect of these controllers on the voltage and angle stability of the entire system, considering that the types of these controllers and their control signals, such as reactive power, current, or voltage, have significant effect on the entire system stability.

Due to the recent transition from government controlled to deregulated electricity markets, the relationship between power system controllers and electricity markets has added a new dimension, as the effect of these controllers on the overall power system stability has to be seen from an economic point of view. Studying the effect of adding and tuning these controllers on the pricing of electricity within the context of electricity markets is a significant and novel research area. Specifically, the link among stability, FACTS controllers and electricity pricing should be appropriately studied and modelled.

Consequently, in this thesis, the focus is on proposing and describing of a novel OPF technique which includes a new stability constraint. This technique is compared with respect to existent OPF techniques, demonstrating that it provides an appropriate modelling of system controllers, and thus a better understanding of their effects on system stability and energy pricing. The proposed OPF technique offers a new methodology for pricing the dynamic services provided by the system's controllers. Moreover, the new OPF technique can be used to develop a novel tuning methodology for PSS and FACTS controllers to optimize power dispatch and price levels, as guaranteeing an adequate level of system security. All tests and comparisons are illustrated using 3-bus and 14-bus benchmark systems.

The thesis introduces a framework for analysing market monitoring and surveillance systems in order to provide a common foundation for researchers and practitioners to specify, design, implement, compare and evaluate such systems. The proposed framework serves as a reference map for researchers and practitioners to position their work in the context of market monitoring and surveillance, resulting in a useful instrument for the analysis, testing and management of such systems. More specifically, the thesis examines the new requirements for the operation of financial markets, the role of technologies, the recent consultations on the structure and governance of EU and US markets, as well as, future usage scenarios and emerging technologies. It examines the context in which market monitoring and market surveillance systems are currently been used. It reports on their processes, performance, and on the organisational and regulatory environments in which they exist. Furthermore, it develops a set of taxonomies which cover the majority of the concepts of market manipulation, market monitoring, market surveillance, entities, technologies and actors that are relevant for the work in this thesis. Building on the gaps and limitations of the current systems, it proposes a new framework following the Design Science methodology. The usefulness of the framework is evaluated through four critical case studies, which not only help to understand with practical exercises the way how markets monitoring and surveillance systems work, but also to investigate their weaknesses, potential evolution and ways to improve them. For each case study, the thesis develops a fully working prototype tested using a sample prosecution case and evaluated in terms of the appropriateness and suitability of the proposed framework. Finally, implications relating to policies, procedures and future market structures are discussed followed by suggestions for future research.

This thesis focuses on providing theoretical tools to help in the development and management of intermittent renewable energy in short term electricity markets. In the first part, we develop a tractable equilibrium model for price formation in intraday electricity markets. For this, we propose a non cooperative game between several producers interacting in the market and facing an intermittent renewable production. Using stochastic control and game theory, we derive explicit optimal strategies for these producers as well as a closed form equilibrium price for different information structures and player characteristics. Our model allows to reproduce and explain the main stylized features of the intraday market such as the specific time dependence of volatility and the correlation between the price and the renewable production forecasts. In the second part, we study dynamic probabilistic forecasts in the diffusion framework. We propose several stochastic differential equation models to capture the dynamic evolution of the uncertainty associated to a forecast, derive the associated predictive densities and calibrate the model on real meteorological data. We then apply it to the problem of a wind energy producer receiving sequential updates of the probabilistic forecasts of the wind speed used to predict her production and make trading decisions in the market. We show to what extent this method can outperform the use of point forecasts in decision-making processes. Finally, in the last part, we propose to study the propertiesof aggregated shallow neural networks. We explore thePAC-Bayesian framework as an alternative to the classicalempirical risk minimization approach. We focus on Gaussianpriors and derive non-asymptotic risk bounds for theaggregated neural networks. These bounds yield minimaxrates of estimation over Sobolev smoothness classes. This analysis also provides a theoretical basis for tuning theparameters and offers new perspectives for applicationsof aggregated neural networks to practical high dimensionalproblems increasingly present in energy decision problemsinvolving renewables or storage

The dissertation is devoted to the study of theoretical and methodological principles of the functioning of the market of non-traditional banking services in Ukraine and the development of practical recommendations for its development. The scientific approaches to understanding the essence of the definition "non-traditional banking services" are generalized, which allowed the author to apply a systematic and structural approach to determining the place of such services in the general composition of their species. The universality inherent in these services has been identified and substantiated, which is the impossibility of assigning these services to one of the most well known banking groups of services (active, passive and commission-intermediary). The theoretical positions of the existence of the market of non-traditional banking services, which were realized through identification of its main consumers and producers, principles of functioning and development, basic functions and factors influencing its influence, are deepened. The nature of this market was considered using a set of different scientific approaches to its interpretation (systemic, synergistic, process and institutional), which allowed justifying the feasibility of using each of them to interpret the nature of such a market in the study of its particular principles. The essence, component composition, features of functioning of the indicated market, its principles of functioning, basic functions and properties are revealed. The analysis of functioning of the banking system of Ukraine was conducted, the diagnostics of the development of traditional and non-traditional banking services were carried out and the main problems of activating the market development of non-traditional banking services in Ukraine were determined. The system of measures to develop the market of non-traditional banking services in Ukraine is proposed based on the definition and description of the peculiarities of functioning of the mechanism of activation of the development of this market. The conceptual provisions of such a mechanism with the definition of its principles of creation, the object, subjects, and the main goals of existence, functions and resource provision are substantiated.

Local electricity markets can be defined broadly as 'future electricity market designs involving domestic customers, demand-side response and energy storage'. Like current deregulated electricity markets, these localised derivations present specific stochastic optimisation problems in which the dynamic and random nature of the market is intertwined with the physical needs of its participants. Moreover, the types of contracts and constraints in this setting are such that 'games' naturally emerge between the agents. Advanced modelling techniques beyond classical mathematical finance are therefore key to their analysis. This thesis aims to study contracts in these local electricity markets using the mathematical theories of stochastic optimal control and games. Chapter 1 motivates the research, provides an overview of the electricity market in Great Britain, and summarises the content of this thesis. It introduces three problems which are studied later in the thesis: a simple control problem involving demand-side management for domestic customers, and two examples of games within local electricity markets, one of them involving energy storage. Chapter 2 then reviews the literature most relevant to the topics discussed in this work. Chapter 3 investigates how electric space heating loads can be made responsive to time varying prices in an electricity spot market. The problem is formulated mathematically within the framework of deterministic optimal control, and is analysed using methods such as Pontryagin's Maximum Principle and Dynamic Programming. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate how the control strategies perform on real market data. The problem of Chapter 3 is reformulated in Chapter 4 as one of optimal switching in discrete-time. A martingale approach is used to establish the existence of an optimal strategy in a very general setup, and also provides an algorithm for computing the value function and the optimal strategy. The theory is exemplified by a numerical example for the motivating problem. Chapter 5 then continues the study of finite horizon optimal switching problems, but in continuous time. It also uses martingale methods to prove the existence of an optimal strategy in a fairly general model. Chapter 6 introduces a mathematical model for a game contingent claim between an electricity supplier and generator described in the introduction. A theory for using optimal switching to solve such games is developed and subsequently evidenced by a numerical example. An optimal switching formulation of the aforementioned game contingent claim is provided for an abstract Markovian model of the electricity market. The final chapter studies a balancing services contract between an electricity transmission system operator (SO) and the owner of an electric energy storage device (battery operator or BO). The objectives of the SO and BO are combined in a non-zero sum stochastic differential game where one player (BO) uses a classic control with continuous effects, whereas the other player (SO) uses an impulse control (discontinuous effects). A verification theorem proving the existence of Nash equilibria in this game is obtained by recursion on the solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman variational PDEs associated with non-zero sum controller-stopper games.

We design, implement and evaluate statistical methods for managing uncertainty when consuming and provisioning resources in a federated computational market. To enable efficient allocation of resources in this environment, providers need to know consumers' risk preferences, and the expected future demand. The guarantee levels to offer thus depend on techniques to forecast future usage and to accurately capture and model uncertainties. Our main contribution in this thesis is threefold; first, we evaluate a set of techniques to forecast demand in computational markets; second, we design a scalable method which captures a succinct summary of usage statistics and allows consumers to express risk preferences; and finally we propose a method for providers to set resource prices and determine guarantee levels to offer. The methods employed are based on fundamental concepts in probability theory, and are thus easy to implement, as well as to analyze and evaluate. The key component of our solution is a predictor that dynamically constructs approximations of the price probability density and quantile functions for arbitrary resources in a computational market. Because highly fluctuating and skewed demand is common in these markets, it is difficult to accurately and automatically construct representations of arbitrary demand distributions. We discovered that a technique based on the Chebyshev inequality and empirical prediction bounds, which estimates worst case bounds on deviations from the mean given a variance, provided the most reliable forecasts for a set of representative high performance and shared cluster workload traces. We further show how these forecasts can help the consumers determine how much to spend given a risk preference and how providers can offer admission control services with different guarantee levels given a recent history of resource prices.

Large scale companies have massive information flows in their administrative

departments. This often creates problems when there is a lack of communication both

internally and with internal partners such as sales units.

Sandvik SMT Market Service (SBMS) is no exception in this case. They got big

problems with their communication with the sales units especially when it concerns the

mail traffic and routing of information. Today SBMS have three regional mailboxes

where the SU’s (Sales Unit) send their mails depending on which region they belong to.

This structure does not function as intended and creates an overload which leads to long

response times.

Therefore the market service manager Jonas Hofvenstam wanted us to investigate this

problem area with the possibility of segmenting the mailboxes including a tagging system

and to perform a review of the sales tools portal in order to shorten the response times

and decrease the mail traffic.

The outcome of this paper was suggestions/proposals regarding how to structure the

common mailboxes, illustration of a tagging system for the mails and suggestions of how

to improve the sales tools portal. We also made recommendations on how to take these

suggestions into action including step by step instructions to make it easier when

performing an implementation.

In a time where information is ever present and in large quantities, it becomes of extreme importance to organisations to find a way to store and analyse all this information in order to maintain their position on the market. One way to deal with this, which has been adopted by large company groups as well as smaller organisation, is the use of business intelligence, BI. This feature helps organisations to store and analyse information and provide analytical reports to support decision making. Despite the fact that BI has been around for a couple of decades it is still a rather new phenomena with a couple of problem areas which has been highlighted by several international studies and articles. Sweden as a market has been considered as somewhat of a pioneer when it comes to IT-development in general and early usage of business intelligence as well as the emerging trend in the business intelligence market; self-service BI. This solution aims to make business intelligence more user friendly in order to increase the amount of users and ease the pressure on IT-departments within organisations. The purpose of this study is to identify these problems and investigate whether they can be applied to decision makers on the Swedish market and if self-service BI is affecting these problems. The study was done by using a survey with 46 respondents from different organisations located in Sweden. The result shows that the problem areas were not recognised by the majority of the respondents and there were correlations between user-friendliness and how often the respondents used self-service BI.

We study techniques to enforce and provision differentiated service levels in Computational Grid systems. The Grid offers simplified provisioning of peak-capacity for applications with computational requirements beyond local machines and clusters, by sharing resources across organizational boundaries. Current systems have focussed on access control, i.e., managing who is allowed to run applications on remote sites. Very little work has been done on providing differentiated service levels for those applications that are admitted. This leads to a number of problems when scheduling jobs in a fair and efficient way. For example, users with a large number of long-running jobs could starve out others, both intentionally and non-intentionally. We investigate the requirements of High Performance Computing (HPC) applications that run in academic Grid systems, and propose two models of service-level management. Our first model is based on global real-time quota enforcement, where projects are granted resource quota, such as CPU hours, across the Grid by a centralized allocation authority. We implement the SweGrid Accounting System to enforce quota allocated by the Swedish National Allocations Committee in the SweGrid production Grid, which connects six Swedish HPC centers. A flexible authorization policy framework allows provisioning and enforcement of two different service levels across the SweGrid clusters; high-priority and low-priority jobs. As a solution to more fine-grained control over service levels we propose and implement a Grid Market system, using a market-based resource allocator called Tycoon. The conclusion of our research is that although the Grid accounting solution offers better service level enforcement support than state-of-the-art production Grid systems, it turned out to be complex to set the resource price and other policies manually, while ensuring fairness and efficiency of the system. Our Grid Market on the other hand sets the price according to the dynamic demand, and it is further incentive compatible, in that the overall system state remains healthy even in the presence of strategic users.

We characterize the equilibrium behavior of a class of stochastic particle systems, where particles (representing customers, jobs, animals, molecules, etc.) enter a space randomly through time, interact, and eventually leave. The results are useful for analyzing the dynamics of randomly evolving systems including spatial service systems, species populations, and chemical reactions. Such models with interactions arise in the study of species competitions and systems where customers compete for service (such as wireless networks). The models we develop are space-time measure-valued Markov processes. Specifically, particles enter a space according to a space-time Poisson process and are assigned independent and identically distributed attributes. The attributes may determine their movement in the space, and whenever a new particle arrives, it randomly deletes particles from the system according to their attributes. Our main result establishes that spatial Poisson processes are natural temporal limits for a large class of particle systems. Other results include the probability distributions of the sojourn times of particles in the systems, and probabilities of numbers of customers in spatial polling systems without Poisson limits.

Understanding the financial value resulting from IS security investments is critically important to organizations focused on protecting service confidentiality, integrity, and availability in order to preserve firm revenues and reputations. Quantifying the financial effect from IS security investments is difficult to derive. This study investigated the relationship between e-banking investments in IS security and their market value impacts. Using an event study approach, the author captured e-banking firm specific data and isolated the IS security effect through the measured change in market values. The author hypothesized that announcements of IS security investments would result in statistically significant changes in market values. The author also hypothesized two sub-segments of the selected security investment data, technology and people, would support statistically significant changes in the market values of e-banking service providers. The hypotheses were tested by measuring stock market reactions to the IS security announcements selected from an eight-year period (2003-2010). Study findings indicated statistically significant market reactions for e-banking firms making IS security investment announcements and suggested that investors rewarded IS security technology investments more highly than e-banking firms making IS security people-focused investment announcements. The author concluded that because investors understand that mandatory regulatory compliance represents an e-banking firm's commitment to creating a secure computing environment, e-banking information systems are perceived as secure therefore, disclosing IS security investments results in weak changes to market values. Ultimately effective management of IS security requires acceptance of the idea that it is not technically feasible or financially viable to implement protections for all identified IS security risks therefore IS security investments must be effectively measured and risk levels consciously selected in order to implement the right technical and operational protections to support a firm's selected risk posture. The study contributes to the event study literature as well as the literature examining the economic effects of information systems security.

Why do standardization and innovation go hand in hand and what does the interaction of interests between public and private actors look like in the “profile” of the standardization process? The nature of technical specifications, Lead Market Initiatives in Europe, social innovations, eco-innovations and psychological services for recruitment are the target areas of this study done in the style of Science, Technology and Society. We decrypt the codes of the expected behavior veiled in standards, the strategically selective sectoral integration of the European Internal Market, the emergence of innovation in standardized areas, the nature of the European innovation policy and the mission of each particular innovative sector. This research contains answers on how the European Union will move toward a more state-like organization bypassing the sovereignty of its member states.
In January 2018, the current EU directive PSD will be replaced by the new Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2). The motives behind the implementation of the directive are, inter alia, to help simplify third party providers entering the payment service market and increasing consumer choice. Today, the payment service market is uppermost dominated by banks, something that the directive is designed to counteract. The purpose of this study is to investigate how well some of the motives of the directive are in line with the actors' perception of the impact of the directive, as well as investigate what opportunities and challenges banks and third party providers see that the new directive implies for them and the market. The essay was conducted as a case study, where semistructured interviews with banks and third party players were the primary data collection methodology. The case study showed that the actors' perception of the directive largely complies with the motives for the directive. All actors have a relatively positive view of the directive and see a wide range of possibilities with the directive. Cooperation between banks and third parties is seen as one of the major opportunities. The challenges that the stakeholders face are varied depending on the type of actor they represent. The study showed that there are some challenges that may limit the number of new players in the market. All possibilities and challenges are presented in the sixth section of the case study.

Electric (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEV) continue to gain attention and market share, not only as options for consumers but also for corporate fleets. EVs and PHEVs can contribute to lower operating costs through reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced fuel economy. In addition, a fleet of EVs or PHEVs, when parked and aggregated in a sizeable number, can provide regulation services to the grid through the electricity stored in the vehicle's batteries. This opportunity is known as Vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G). This thesis evaluates the economics for V2G-enabled fleets to participate in the regulation services market. In order to build a business case for fleet managers, we constructed a 10-year cash flow model that compares the operating, infrastructure, and capital costs, as well as the revenue opportunities for EVs, PHEVs, and ICEs. To quantify potential revenues, we adapted a tool that the ISO New England has used to simulate the revenues of participants in the regulation market for an alternative energy pilot. We show that ICEs, while having the lowest retail value, actually have the greatest NPV due to their high operating costs and inability to participate in the regulation services market. EVs have the highest retail value, but due to their large battery size are able to provide the most regulation services. The opportunity for V2G is critical for the attractiveness of the EV. PHEVs offer lower V2G revenue opportunity than the EVs but have greater operational flexibility. We determined that V2G revenue potential is driven by the charger capacity and battery size and there are tradeoffs associated with these components. A larger battery and charger will generate more money from regulation services, but their high investment cost may outweigh these benefits. The correct combination of charger capacity, battery size, and state of charge (SOC) is important. If the charger capacity is too large and SOC too high or low, a small battery can be charged or depleted too quickly, hindering its ability to provide regulation services.

Mobile phone service is increasing among low income populations; however, with over 1 billion mobile service users worldwide, many people still lack banking services. Banks do not reach out to the poor because of the high operational costs involved. Scholars and industry practitioners have indicated that mobile phones could be an alternative channel for delivering financial services to the less advantaged and unbanked, without requiring a traditional bank with a branch network. The purpose of this bounded case study was to explore the strategies bank managers used to implement the new mobile banking service to the Ethiopian community. The new product development theory served as the conceptual framework for this study. Twenty experienced bank managers were interviewed from the leading private bank in Ethiopia. Data were segmented and categorized. After member checking and triangulation, data were sorted into 4 themes: development, testing, commercialization of new products or services, and an organizational commitment to adopt new technologies and innovative processes. The findings may contribute to the body of knowledge regarding strategies bank managers can use for implementing and introducing new products in order to contribute to the prosperity of individuals, businesses, and communities.

The impacts of tropical deforestation and forest degradation are felt at multiple levels, bringing about local ecosystem degradation, regional biome fragmentation and global contributions of 12-15% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. In response to this, markets and payments for ecosystem services have emerged to financially value the services forests provide, most notably in the form of mechanisms to reduce deforestation and enhance forest conservation (REDD+). REDD+ has received much attention at the international level, but the pressing contemporary challenge is its engagement at the local scale. This thesis examines the potential local-level engagement of REDD+ on the Amazon frontier as an approach to altering patterns of anthropogenic encroachment on the world's greatest expanse of tropical forest. Case studies are taken from the buffer zones of protected areas along Peru's Amazonian frontier, Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park (YChNP) in central Peru and Manu National Park (MNP) in the SE of the country. A political ecology approach is taken to examine the influences and implications of existing land use governance structures, local livelihoods and preferences, and smallholder production and land economy, in the context of REDD+. Adopting mixed methods comprising semi-structured interviewing and land user surveys, data were collected between July 2008 and September 2009. I show that the two sites' histories and geographies have shaped distinct challenges for REDD+. The proximity of YChNP to Lima has fuelled agricultural expansion and higher land use incomes, yet institutions – particularly those belonging to the state – are exceedingly weak. The pace of land use change here obliges certain urgency for REDD+ interventions to provide livelihood alternatives, divert the current development path and restore the landscape. MNP’s rurality has protected it to date from expansive deforestation, yet weak institutions, poverty and increasing threats from national development processes highlight the importance of REDD+ interventions. In an analysis of land economy, an innovative conceptual framework is presented, the '3Rs' (rewarding, regulating and reshaping) to tackle local heterogeneity in REDD+ engagement. This thesis contributes knowledge to the practical and theoretical advancement of REDD+, and proposes the mechanism as an important new arena for academic investigation.

Many literatures have shown that needs last longer than any specific solutions, so understanding of customer needs seems a crucial factor in early Product-Service System (PSS) development. Nowadays, many western companies, especially manufacturing focused companies, have realized the difficulty of understanding market needs. In this thesis, a new Value-Driven Needfinding methodology for manufacturing company to apply in certain markets was investigated. To further demonstrate the implementation of the proposed methodology, a case study involving Volvo Construction Equipment exploring value-orient needs in Chinese market is showed. At the end, by providing the scenarios comparison, a PSS conceptual design will be illustrated to show the utilization of the customer needs, then opportunities for company future provision towards sustainability based on early PSS development will be discussed.
Providing added value to standalone products by adding services is at the core of Product-Service Systems (PSS) offered in manufacturing companies. Providing PSS requires a change not only in the way products are sold, but also in the way they are designed and developed. The way of understanding and capturing customer needs often fall outside the early phase of designing integration solution in traditional manufacturing company. The aim of the thesis is to investigate the needfinding for early phase of PSS design, methods and tools proposed to improve the need collection and analysis process. This academic work was performed through the close collaboration with Volvo Construction Equipment which is looking for opportunities to provide Product-Service System in the Chinese market. The thesis group firstly reviewed theory of needfinding, and then the importance of value was brought out. The methodology of Value-Driven Needfinding (VDN) was introduced to facilitate the early PSS development. By deriving needs from an adding value standpoint, this methodology is not only focused only on needs intended as “Voice of the customer” but rather as needs expressed as “Value Adding Activities”. Thus, these value-based needs can reveal some functions for potential system solution development. A case study involved with Chinese customers’ needs is described to demonstrate the application of VDN. Two scenarios comparison were presented to evaluate the sustainable influence between provision of current solutions and new PSS solution. During discussion part, the application of VDN, the Chinese market preferences and the contribution of VDN for early PSS design from sustainable perspectives are discussed. At the end, three conclusions supported the contirbution of VDN applied for manufacturing company to carry out PSS development at early stage are showed.

The digital revolution has led to a drastic transformation of electronics manufacturing industries globally. A growing number of companies are continually investing in digital technologies to remain competitive. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Big data, Robotics, etc. and smart devices have been widely adopted to improve efficiency, connectivity, and productivity of businesses. To cope with increased competition and customer demands, electronics manufacturing companies have broadened their interest in service innovation. However, companies pursuing a servitization strategy often lack an established framework i.e. method and tools to design new services. Besides, research indicates that existing frameworks with the potential to support this development are not contextualized to the electronics manufacturing industry. This design study, therefore, evaluates and proposes how the Integrative PSS approach can be adapted to suit the electronics manufacturing context to support services. The findings suggest that some models used in this approach were found to be unfavorable in the development of services. In such cases, the study contributes by providing suggestions on what models to adapt and how in the integrative PSS approach to support electronic manufacturing companies in their servitization process. The artifact is an exaptation since a known solution is extended to solve a problem in a new context and of the type instantiation.

The main directions and evolution of the transformation of banking systemin Ukraine are investigated in thesis, their influence on the strategic management of the bank is substantiated, the essence of this concept is clarified, approaches to diagnosing the market environment in various segments of Ukrainian banking market, the position of the bank on them, assessing the effectiveness of the bank activities to strengthen this strategic position, in-depth methodological tools for substantiating the impact on the development of banking for strategic bank management and determining the readiness of bank employees for transformational changes in the banking system.

This thesis deals with specialized information systems for internet service providers. The aim of thesis is to compare specific information system of company Dupeto s.r.o. with an-other external systems. The first part of the thesis deals with the theoretical foundations, which is followed by the analysis of a market of this systems. After making choice of which systems are the propriet ones, the thesis gives a detailed description of these sys-tems. In conclusion there is a recommendation for Dupeto s.r.o. which system is the best for this company. This recommendation was achieved by the means of a multi-criteria de-cision making. This thesis is so helpful mainly for this company but it is helpful for other internet service providers too because it contains the analysis of the systems from various point of views.

Political structures and the evolution of late capitalism in liberal Western democracies lend a common frame to the development of national media systems. However, whereas media policy from the post-war period to the mid-1980s was largely driven by socio-political concerns and coextensive with policy for public service television, this model has been vehemently challenged. Key factors were the convergence of erstwhile-separated industries and infrastructures, as well as the ambitions of the corporate sector and governments alike, to benefit from the economic opportunities offered by the communications revolution. By assessing the changing relationship between the role of the state, economic structures and technological innovation, this research investigates these processes in the UK and Germany. Both countries have the two key public service systems but also feature striking differences such as the antithetic political systems and democratic processes (majoritarian vs. consensus democracy). The basic assumption suggests that a genuine understanding of contemporary developments is only possible if political/economic as well as historic/sociological perspectives are incorporated into the holistic approach applied. Thereby this study gives consideration to key processes and events which have determined transitions between communications policy paradigms and regulatory regimes. Given the Anglo-Saxon tradition of regulating, key processes and events in the UK are often indicated by the appointment and report of a committee of enquiry. For the purpose of this study the most crucial of these is the Committee on Financing the BBC (1986), which first applied market-driven politics onto British broadcasting, and whose recommendations still serve as a blueprint for current communications policy-making. In Germany the KtK Report (1974) formed the basis for decisive reforms in broadcasting and communications. Apart from that, however, Germany features the characteristic of administering state interventions in as detailed a manner as possible through legislation. Of central importance are, therefore, the rulings of the Federal Constitutional Court, which continuously set decisive parameters for the development of the broadcasting system. The thesis follows two driving themes which have been identified as crucial in terms of the comparative dimension and are elaborated continuously in more detail. First, the focus is on the interdependencies between public and private sector. Second, implications and responses of the central vis-à-vis federal characteristic of state formation are investigated. In doing so, the thesis draws on vast sources of archival documents as well as exclusive material from a series of elite interviews with a purposively-selected sample of very high-level sources, including Chairmen, Director-Generals, ministers, very senior civil servants and so on. The thesis demonstrates how communications policy-making is carried out in both countries and how these processes are determined by national regulatory frameworks which are rooted within the borders of the nation state. As such the research findings have broader implications for commercial and public sector regulation.

The background to this thesis is found in the growing importance of the marketing concept. The concept has been used frequently in articles in the past few years, in spite of lack of consensus about what it is. To make a contribution to the theoretical field the theories about service marketing and market orientation had to be examined and the relevant factors drawn out to construct a model for describing market orientation in service companies. The theoretical examination resulted in the following three components that together constitutes the foundation of the marketing concept in service companies: market information, the support system and the customer meeting. The main purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the marketing concept in service companies. Within this purpose the study also will identify which driving forces and obstacles affects market orientation. To a certain extent the process towards market orientation also is examined. The first analyses of the two insurance companies showed that the degree of activity in working with the factors that constituted the marketing concept varied. In general they had worked with approximately the same factors almost in the same way. In so doing they had worked more with some of the conceptual and behavioral factors than with the others. The cases differed from the theoretical frame of reference, as expected. However, the differences were impossible to explain with the component model. New analyses of the empirical data showed other factors that had influenced the market orientation process in the companies. The new factors could be divided into four groups depending on whether they were considered as internal or external factors and whether they were driving forces or obstacles for the process. One original component that proved to be of great importance in the market orientation process was market information. Neither of the insurance companies had worked with that component in a systematic way to find out, for example, the customers needs and wants. The study resulted in a more dynamic model of the market orientation process - the cycle model. It visualize the relation between the components and it also adds on a time perspective to market orientation, since it is supposed to continue over time.
