Summary Inspired by an excellent article of J. Hewson (1976), this short paper points out some negative consequences of the fact that the Saussurean dichotomy of langue and parole has never received wider acceptance in American linguistics. The negligence of this important distinction has culminated in Chomsky’s astonishing proposition (1986) according to which the notion of ‘language’ is unimportant and dispensable. Such a view would in effect lead to the elimination of the proper object of linguistics. Language (langue) cannot be defined as the totality of utterances, in the same way, as human legs cannot be defined as the totality of the steps, which will be made by them. The understanding of important phenomena (e.g., language learning and linguistic change) is impossible without the notion of a social code (langue) and its individual use (parole). Necessarily, the denial of langue results in an increased proposition of ‘explanations’, that are empirically unverifiable. The notion ‘natural language’ cannot be derived from the speakers’ subjective knowledge of this language; every attempt to this effect must remain incurably circular.

Integrated watershed management (IWM) using KISS (coordination, integration, synchronisation, and synergy) method is believed to be the answer for problems lingering the integrated watershed management in Indonesia. How successful the management is depends on how capable of stakeholders are to performing coordination, integration, synchronisation, and synergy in managing the watershed. This study aimed at measuring the rates of coordination, integration, synchronisation, and synergy performed by each stakeholder by applying an "Index Rate" instrument. Research findings revealed that, simultaneously, the coordination, integration, synchronisation, and synergy obtained by the watershed management stakeholders resulted in a moderate rate (71.4). Partially, the rates obtained were as follows: moderate coordination (72.69); moderate integrity (72.50); moderate synchronisation (70.34); and moderate synergy (70.05).

Interpersonal sensorimotor synchronisation requires individuals to anticipate and adapt to their partner’s movement timing. Research has demonstrated that the intentionality of a co-actor affects joint action planning, however, less is known about whether co-actor intentionality affects sensorimotor synchronisation. Explicit and implicit knowledge of a synchronisation partner’s intentionality may influence coordination by modulating temporal anticipation and adaptation processes. We used a computer-controlled virtual partner (VP) consisting of tempo-changing auditory pacing sequences to simulate either an intentional or unintentional synchronisation partner. The VP was programmed to respond to the participant with low or moderate degrees of error correction, simulating a slightly or moderately adaptive human, respectively. In addition, task instructions were manipulated so that participants were told they were synchronising with either another person or a computer. Results indicated that synchronisation performance improved with the more adaptive VP. In addition, there was an influence of the explicit partner instruction, but this was dependent upon the degree of VP adaptivity and was modulated by subjective preferences for either the human or the computer partner. Beliefs about the intentionality of a synchronisation partner may thus influence interpersonal sensorimotor synchronisation in a manner that is modulated by preferences for interacting with intentional agents.

Abstract Human beings organise socially. Theories have posited that interpersonal neural synchronisation might underlie the creation of affiliative bonds. Previous studies tested this hypothesis mainly during a social interaction, making it difficult to determine whether the identified synchronisation is associated with affiliative bonding or with social interaction. This study addressed this issue by focusing on the teacher–student relationship in the resting state both before and after a teaching period. Brain activity was simultaneously measured in both individuals using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The results showed a significant increase in brain synchronisation at the right sensorimotor cortex between the teacher and student in the resting state after, but not before, the teaching period. Moreover, the synchronisation increased only after a turn-taking mode of teaching but not after a lecturing or video mode of teaching. A chain mediation analysis showed that brain synchronisation during teaching partially mediated the relationship between the brain synchronisation increase in the resting state and strength of the affiliative bond. Finally, both role assignment and social interaction were found to be required for affiliative bonding. Together, these results support the hypothesis that interpersonal synchronisation in brain activity underlies affiliative bonding and that social interaction mechanically mediates the bonding process.

There has been much discussion recently implying that Loran-C chain synchronisation using ‘System Area Monitor’ (SAM) control and using ‘Time of Transmission (or Emission)’ (TOT or TOE) are incompatible mechanisations of Loran-C chain time management because of their differing impact on users. Further, the mechanisation of UTC synchronisation is described as either satellite (GPS/GLONASS) based or Loran Chain measurement based, thereby excluding integrated use of both techniques for reliability. These differences are not mutually exclusive. Well-defined chain synchronisation can logically apply all measurement and control techniques as well as providing improved accuracy. This paper defines synchronisation and describes the history of Loran-C synchronisation control and the current methods employed. The existence of Cesium Standards at Loran stations, and the recent introduction of digital signal processing receivers, have greatly changed the potential for extremely precise timing control, detection of extraordinary timing changes, and the maintenance of very tight UTC synchronisation. This paper describes a number of techniques for defining, observing and applying the various sources of timing information, optimising performance for users and simplifying implementation for service providers.

Estrus synchronisation protocols are used as an essential strategy in the reproductive management of dairy herds, including Ovsynch, Presynch, Selectsynch, Heatsynch, Cosynch, Double-Ovsynch, and some other combinations of these, while the optimal protocol is still uncertain. We performed a network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare the efficacy of the synchronisation protocols in dairy cows and heifers. Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cabi Direct, and The Cochrane Library were searched up to May 13, 2019. The comparison of synchronisation protocols in terms of pregnancy rate was done by combining direct and indirect evidence. Ranking the synchronisation protocols were conducted by using surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). 48 randomized trials involving 9 different protocols were included. Compared with the control group, none of the synchronisation protocols were more effective in pregnancy rate at first insemination. Presynch+Ovsynch was found to be more efficient than Ovsynch (RR=1.21, 95% CI:1.04-1.40), also Presynch+Ovsynch and Presynch+Heatsynch were superior to Presynch+Selectsynch (RR=2.01, 95% CI: 1.03-3.93 and RR=1.91, 95% CI: 1.21-3.01). In conclusion, presynchronisation strategies such as Presynch+Ovsynch increase the effectiveness of pregnancy rate at first insemination related to other synchronisation protocols. Nevertheless, the non-superiority of the synchronisation protocols against not applying any hormonal treatments should be considered in reproductive management in dairy herds.

The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of pre-synchronisation on the occurrence of the oestrus and pregnancy rate after fixed time artificial insemination (FTAI) in synchronised ewes during the anoestrous season. Kivircik ewes (n = 84) were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment groups with (PRE; n = 42) or without (SYN; n = 42) pre-synchronisation. In the SYN group, the ewes were subjected to a 7-d short-term protocol (P4 insertion-6d-PGF2α-1d-P4 removal + eCG). In the PRE group, the same short-term protocol as in the SYN group was applied with 7 days apart for a pre-synchronised synchronisation protocol. A cervical FTAI was performed with fresh semen at 54 h after sponge removal. At the beginning of the synchronisation protocol, the oestrous response (66.7% vs. 0.0%) and cyclicity rates (64.3% vs. 14.3%) based on progesterone (P4) were higher in the PRE group compared to those in the SYN group, respectively (P < 0.01). However, the oestrous response after synchronisation was lower within 96 h (57.1% vs. 95.2%; P < 0.01) in the PRE group compared to that in the SYN group. Although the pregnancy rate after the FTAI was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in the PRE group (14.3%) than the SYN group (35.7%), the overall pregnancy rate after natural mating was not different (95.2%) between the groups. In conclusion, the pre-synchronisation decreased the oestrous response leading to a lower pregnancy rate after the FTAI in the synchronised ewes during the anoestrous season. Thus, attention should be paid to two consecutive administrations of eCG in a pre-synchronisation and synchronisation protocol in ewes.

Speaking all the time and craving for silence all at once: this is the paradoxical situation of the beckettian hero. In this way Beckett defies the "old style" and the literary heritage. He also defies the space of representation as it is founded on the categories of the intelligible and the conventions of common sense. So this is a work in progress where we can distinguish a voice of extreme lucidity concerning the insoluble enigma of mankind.
